If you're not interested you may want to just hit the delete key now. I just thought that I would take a few moments to share my study methodology for the CCIE lab. I've been meaning to do this since I passed the lab on November 15th in San Jose, but I always seem to get sidetracked with all of my newfound free time. This was my first attempt at the lab and I found it to be fairly straight forward. It wasn't as convoluted as I expected and I had seen pretty much everything before. Day 1 The first thing that I did was read through the entire lab TWICE. I realized that I knew how to do everything and went to work on my diagram. I found day one to be very easy and was done by 2 o'clock. I checked and re-checked all of my work and felt very confident in everything that I had done. After that I spent time making sure that ALL of my information was recorded correctly and neatly on my diagram. I felt very confident when I left, but I have to admit as I tried to get some sleep the what if's were creeping in my mind. Day 2 I arrived for Day 2 happy to see the Day 2 binder on my desk and went through the same process of reading the entire lab twice. I realized that I knew exactly what to do on 90% of the lab and may have to browse the cd for the other 10%. Again, I found that there was plenty of time and I had completed everything that I knew how to do by 10:30. I spent the next 30 minutes reviewing the cd and configuring the remaining 10%. I then re-read everything and checked over all of my work and made sure that my diagram was complete. Documentation is very important in the lab not only for troubleshooting, but to ensure that the proctor can see what you were doing. The proctor spends all day at the lab and then has to check your work in the evening or at lunch for day 2. The last thing he wants to do is spend 30 minutes trying to read your diagram. Of course, this is just my opinion. After day 2, I felt real good about my work, but nervous none the less. This made for what seemed like a never ending lunch. Once we arrived back at the facility I was called first and on the way back to the lab I was told that I had made it to troubleshooting and that I had three hours. When I returned to my desk I found the paperwork for troubleshooting and for the first time found out how many points I had. I had gained 70 of the 75 points and only needed 10 of the 25 from troubleshooting. At that point, I knew that I had passed and just needed to knock out the troubleshooting. As I looked around I realized that no one else had progressed from Day 2. I spent about an hour and a half on troubleshooting and felt like I fixed everything so I turned in my sheet. About 5 minutes later, the proctor returned with a yellow sticky note with my number on it. He then asked me if I would erase all of my configs and then I left with a huge grin on my face. I just couldn't believe that all of my studying paid off. I met Chuck Larrieu a few hours later for a victory dinner. I knew that it would be nice to have some company one way or the other and I was glad that it turned out to be for good reasons. Passing the test was very rewarding, but the journey was just as rewarding. It's amazing the amount of material that you learn along the way and the many friends that you make. I have become friends with many people that I may of never met if I wasn't studying for the CCIE. Study Materials I stu
Headaches
Is it just me?... or does anyone else get headache when using wireless LAN technology... specifically the aironet 340's (802.11B DS). I tried turning down the signal strength to 1 mW (from the default of 35 mW)... and that helps a bit, but still it's scary to think that there's enough radiation that I can feel it. Also, I get headaches when using my nextel mobile phone too. Some of my co-workers get headaches too... but not everyone is affected. _ FAQ, list archives, and subscription info: http://www.groupstudy.com/list/cisco.html Report misconduct and Nondisclosure violations to [EMAIL PROTECTED]

RE: how to config a frame relay switch?
In general, the frame switch config is correct. I believe you have a typo in your frame route statement under int s 1/1 On your other routers, the interface commands are just your encapsulation frame-relay and then optionally your lmi-type and interface-dlci commands Trick of the trade. Frame-relay interface-type DCE MAY be placed on an interface that does NOT have the DCE end of the cable, and therefore does not necessarily require a clockrate. The router interface to which is connected the DCE end of the cable is the one that requires the clockrate. The two do NOT have to be the same. Have fun! RE: question about loopback interfaces
Yes and no. recall that a DR is elected on a shared broadcast medium, typically ethernet. ( dumb question - how does this play out in a token ring environment? My supposition is that it would work out the same, even though TR is not a broadcast medium ) So if you were to change your scenario to the ethernet port going down, then yes. Hhhh... Suppose you had: - ethernet | | | DRBDR DR/other | | (---frame relay cloud ---) DR ethernet hardware fails. Now then, given that the DR hello is roughly 10 seconds by default, will the BDR be promoted to DR even though there is an alternate route to the existing DR. Recall that the SPF would most definitely be the ethernet port. Would there be a footrace among the various router interfaces? Would the alternate route to the DR be propagated to everyone prior to the BDR promotion? Without doing a Q&D lab, I would venture a guess that the BDR would be promoted because even though there is an alternative route to the DR loopback, hellos go only to adjacent routers, and the DR is no longer adjacent. Any comments? Can't answer number 2. As my real world OSPF experience is limited. Chuck -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] On Behalf Of whitaker Sent: Monday, November 27, 2000 9:43 PM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject:RE: question about loopback interfaces Thanks for the response! I have two more questions: If in an OSPF and BGP environment, I think can see the stability with loopbacks... Correct me if I'm wrong in this theoritical scenario: Two routers in an OSPF share the highest priority. To break the tie and determine the DR, OSPF looks at router id, which is the highest interface address (let's say serial interface) and determines a particular router has the highest id. It becomes DR. Without a loopback address, if the serial interface goes down, then the BDR comes online and a new BDR election takes place. This requires processing power and could slow down the network. With a loopback interface configured with the highest IP address, then if a router is the DR and looses its serial interface, it would remain the DR. Is this correct? My second question involves the configuration of the loopback from real-world experience. What do most of you use - an address from the same subnet one of the interfaces is on or a seperate address? -Original Message- From: Tony van Ree [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Monday, November 27, 2000 9:28 PM To: whitaker; [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: question about loopback interfaces The notes I have here suggest that using a loopback interface provides a more stable interface than a physical interface. As the loopback interface is up as long as the RAM is working the chances of losing this interface are greatly reduced. Both OSPF and BGP use the highest active IP address as the router ID. If a loopback address is configured they will use the loopback address. Therefore the loopback address provides more stability. It can also make network management and troubleshooting tasks easier. yeah ,i got a type mistake in config of int s1/1,i have corrected it. the config on dte is quite simple ,i think. Configuring OSPF: OSPF classifies different media into the following three types of networks by default: + Broadcast networks (Ethernet, Token Ring, FDDI) + Nonbroadcast multiaccess networks (SMDS, Frame Relay, X.25) + Point-to-point networks (HDLC, PPP) Configure Your OSPF Network Type You have the choice of configuring your OSPF network type as either broadcast or nonbroadcast multiaccess, regardless of the default media type. Using this feature, you can configure broadcast networks as nonbroadcast multiaccess networks when, for example, you have routers in your network that do not support multicast addressing. You also can configure nonbroadcast multiaccess networks (such as X.25, Frame Relay, and SMDS) as broadcast networks. This feature saves you from having to configure neighbors, as described in the section "Configure OSPF for Nonbroadcast Networks." Can't answer #2, as it's really early and I'm not awake yet, but it seems that the dead timer should be taken into account. Hi, I haven't had a chance to run this through a sniffer yet to examine the packets, but am wondering if someone could help me understand the rfc1771 reference to BGP update messages. When a BGP update messages is sent describing a route, are several update messages sent, each with a singular path attribute flag, and attribute type code, or does one update message contain all of the path attributes, and codes within one segment? The rfc1771 seams to read plural by stating variable length sequence of path attributes. Re: question about loopback interfaces
We generally have a class C range set aside for loopbacks for most customers with networks of any size. Mark, Don't make me get on a plane and come over there;) You don't have those tanks behind you anymore;) I went to the Mars Music store in KC, and found a SKB case for $199, and purchased a 19-inch powerstrip for $59. This case has a back and front 19inch rack inside, and meets flight standards, so it can fly I look forward to lugging the 6-9 routers I have around the airport. This AGS router, which has IOS 11.x chips, 6 serial ports, 4 token ring ports, and 2 ethernet port ports, is a little "tempermental": if it has been sitting unused for a few days, you may need to reseat the cards to make it come up. It is also LOUD, and I , being the deaf guy, am complaining so that tells you something. Other than that, works great!Email me if interested. Problem with CID 640-025. Read this if you have it scheduled.
I just got off the phone with Cisco and I have some interesting news. Recently I posted a message asking about the current version of CID. I knew the current version to be 3.0, with 100 questions over 2 hours. I took the exam last Wed. (Nov. 22) and received CID 2.0, 158 questions over 2 hours, 80% to pass. To make a long story short, I escalated the case to Cisco because I knew that I had received the wrong test. Cisco looked over things and agreed that I received the wrong test and gave me a voucher for a retest. Further, I was just told that because of this problem, they're going to temporarily pull the test from both VUE (where I took the exam) and Prometric, until they get things sorted out. I don't know when the suspension is going to go into effect, but suspect that it'll be immediately. Since I want to take the test ASAP, I asked if they had an ETA for redeployment and was told that they're guessing two weeks, but that it's just a guess and that it could be sooner or later. Anyone with the test currently scheduled should probably call the testing center and see if your exam has been postponed. help with IP Helper Address
A couple years ago we (actually my predecessor) removed a server from a small remote stub network (172.26.91.X). All the printers were moved to a print server on the main network (172.26.90.X) and kept their assigned ip's in network 172.26.91.X. The two networks are connected via a 4000 series on the 90.X end and a 2500 series on the 91.X end. When a user in network 91.X tries to map a printer, none show up in the box (WinNT). I can't reasonably expect all of them to all remember the UNC names for their printers. I started searching CCO for a solution and it seems to be "IP Helper Address" I have noticed that I don't have any set and always wondered what they were, well, now I know. The question is, on which router do I put the address of the print server?? Re: question about loopback interfaces
For OSPF, if no loopback address is configured OSPF uses the highest IP address on the router being used. This could be a WAN interface. You may be running OSPF only on your Ethernet interface and not this WAN interface OSPF is using for the router ID. If the WAN interface bounces, it effects OSPF and causes OSPF to re-converge. If you have a loopback interface, then OSPF will use the highest IP on a loopback as it's router ID and thus when the WAN interface bounces it's not going to effect the OSPF process. --- suaveguru <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: > if I am not wrong for some routing protocols like > ospf > it needs a always up interface like a loopback > interface . iBGP
Dear Group, Doing BGP stuff in the lab now and I'm having a problem getting iBGP routes into the routing table. After fixing up the problems getting neighbors talking properly, I cannot see BGP routes. All the routes are from loop-backs on 4 routers in a full mesh. The routes being advertised are not being advertised by another igp. I'm also looking at the Hutnick/Satterlee book which takes you by the hand but I'm not getting the same results. It states there are 2 conditions to be met to get routes into the routing table. BGP knows about the routes through the network command - condition #1 The routes do show up on their local router as "directly connected" and therefore are in the local ip routing table. - Condition 2 All routes show up in all routers in the bgp table on every router. I'm now looking at next-hop-self, but so far it didn't seem to help. The book's examples end up with a local pref of 0 whereas mine shows 100, not sure of the significance. A colleague mentioned iBGPs high admin distance (200) was keeping the routes out .. but the routes are not being advertised by any other means except iBGP - so... shouldn't they be there?? Anyway, short of posting configs - any quick ideas? Re: Headaches
I used to get headaches due to the CIA beaming EMP at me. After I wrapped my head in aluminum foil, I eliminated the headaches and prevented them from erasing the configs on my AGS. Are you, by chance, close to Langley? On a more serious note, you may be more senstive to EM and RF than most folks. If it persists, you should see your doctor and get it checked out. You can reduce your exposure to the cell phone by using a headset which will allow you to move the phone away from your head. Of course, if you put the phone in your pocket and use it in this manner, that can cause another slew of problems I won't get into... Title: Access-list Problem with UDP Port 53 I am having a problem with an access-list on a 2600 router. It used for the clients T1 connection. the access-list as follows: access-list 100 deny ip 10.0.0.0 0.255.255.255 any access-list 100 deny ip 172.16.128.0 0.0.15.255 any access-list 100 deny ip 192.168.0.0 0.0.255.255 any access-list 100 permit tcp any any established access-list 100 deny icmp any any timestamp-request access-list 100 permit icmp any any access-list 100 permit tcp any any eq www access-list 100 permit tcp any any eq smtp access-list 100 permit tcp any any eq pop3 access-list 100 permit udp any any eq domain access-list 100 deny udp any any log access-list 100 deny tcp any any log When this acl is applied inbound on the serial interface, all web browsing stops. Looking at the logs and acl counters, it shows that UDP port 53 is being denied via the "access-list 100 deny udp any any log" statement. From my understanding, TCP port 53 is used between DNS servers and UDP port 53 is used for DNS queries between clients and DNS servers. The client is not hosting a DNS server, so they only need DNS queries and replies to pass. Upon changing "access-list 100 deny udp any any log" to "access-list 100 permit udp any any log", all web browsing is enabled. Could someone please shed some light on what I am missing here? Remote user profile
Hello all, I need to set a profile for a specific remote user dialing on AS5300 access server to let him access only specific server and can not telnet or ping on other servers but I don't know how!! Greetings, I've an interesting one for you guys. When I issue a "sh cdp neigh" command on a 25XX router, I get 2 devices (WS-C5505 and 1900) on the same E0 interface. The destination port for the 5505 is 3/8, and the 1900 is B. I don't really have physical access to the equipment for visual inspection. Could there be a dump hub between the switches? since a dump hub doesn't have a MAC address, the cdp protocol is showing both devices instead! Any help on this one guys is appreciated. Switch preference (network topology) question
By next year our office will have over 50 people. This does not include people who will be in our building and working for other companies. That number will be around 15 and it will grow. Basically, our building hosts our company and various other companies and I am part of a two-man IT staff that runs everything for all companies. Currently, we are using three 3548 XL switches and a 2620 for interVLAN routing. In this scenario, would it be feasible (and cost-effective) for me to roll out a 5000 (or a 5505) with a GBIC module and an RSM to take the load off the 2620 (which also does routing for our Frame Relay network)? OSPF host routes
Hi Guys / Gals Does anyone know of a way to make OSPF advertise the loopback network instead of the host route? ie: int lo0 ip add 213.166.24.161 255.255.255.240 comes up in other routers routing tables as: O213.166.24.161/32 [110/154] via 213.166.25.17 Serial0.3 when i would like it to look like: O213.166.24.160/28 [110 etc etc Apparently OSPF just treats loopbacks like this, EIGRP doesn't, therefore the ospf route is always more specific when setting up lab exercises with redistribution, so its hard to get into trouble! Re: CDP protocol
A CDP-enabled interface learns about all other CDP-enabled devices on its LAN, so I'm not sure why you would wonder about it learning about the C5505 and the 1900. CDP messages are sent to a data-link-layer multicast address that traverses switches. Maybe the 1900 is behind the C5505. Without more information on your topology, it's hard to give a more definite answer. Priscilla At 03:11 PM 11/28/00, Nabil Fares wrote: >Greetings, > >I've an interesting one for you guys. Hi, I have found some emulations do not like it. In some cases you just can't seem to get it. This was true of some Windows emulators. NAT
Hi Guys, I have a question for you. In my organitation there is the request to create two NAT pool address in the same router, in specific CISCO 3640, for two serial interface connect two different sites. In particulary, the hosts with IP Class 13.12.1.0 with subnet mask 255.255.255.0 must two other site with IP class 10.12.68.0 and 130.12.13.0 both with subnet mask 255.255.255.0. A statement these IP address Class belong an other Organitazion but they exist in my organitazion for this motive i shaped the NAT. In this moment in my router is configured un NAT Pool address for a site, i must configure a new NAT pool address for the new site. My question is: If i make the two NAT pool address, the configuration for the two interface ( inbound and outbound , etc . etc.) and I add the relative static route for the two Pool address, well , the routing of the different packets for two different sites is it correct ? CONGRATULATIONS WAY TO GO!!! I should add that I have had the pleasure of meeting Aaron twice now - once at Networkers in Florida, and again last Thursday. Aaron is a gentleman in the true sense of the work, very helpful, very informative, and quite an expert in a number of arcane routing issues. He deals in network complexity in depth in his job. It should be no surprise that he found the Lab "easy". The man knows his stuff inside out Hope you and the family are having some fun now, Aaron. Deserve it, man! Dixon Sent: Sunday, November 26, 2000 10:33 AM To: GroupStudy LAB; GroupStudy Subject:CCIE #6460 Hello all, This is a brief synopsis of my ccie lab and the tools I used to study. Study Materials I studied the normal books Caslow, Halabi, and Doyle and found them all to be very helpful. I also used three other books extensively that I don't see mentioned very often. I used the configuring cisco routers for bridging, dlsw+, & desktop protocols and the Cisco Press Lan Switching Book. I found them both to be very helpful as I work extensively with cisco routers and rarely use cisco switches. I also used the CCIEBootcamp labs which I found to be an excellent resource for practice. There are a lot of other labs, but most of them don't throw everything together like the bootcamp labs. I have to admit that I only completed about half of them and never did the dreaded lab 8, but I s

12.1.5(T) fixes
I'm sure it fixes a ton of things, but one thing I've been struggling with is an image that will support both FastEthernet interfaces and WIC 2-T1 DI (drop and insert) modules on a 3640. I could get two different images that would support it, but not a single image that worked for both. Even then, the images I as using for the WIC 2-T1 DI were buggy. Anyway, if you've having problems, give 12.1.5(T) a try. Also seems to work great with 1605R IP FW Plus IPSEC56. -- Jason Roysdon, CCNA, MCSE, CNA, Network+, A+ List email: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Homepage: http://jason.artoo.net/ Cisco resources: http://r2cisco.artoo.net/ _ FAQ, list archives, and subscription info: http://www.groupstudy.com/list/cisco.html Report misconduct and Nondisclosure violations to [EMAIL PROTECTED]

In the real world, there is a temporary "routing table." Also in the real world, this would be too large to keep around, given that it would largely be duplicated in the "main" routing table (i.e., Routing Information Base). Yes, I can see there would be interest in having the information for debugging, but my feeling would be that most implementers think it's too costly. From the Cisco point of view, if you want to play "what if I remove this static" games, Netsys is intended for just that purpose. Not cheap, I recognize. The description of SPF in RFC2328 is conceptual, and the performance of an OSPF implementation depends on how efficiently the real computation is written. Dijkstra's algorithm is 40 years old, and more efficient approaches exist. See, for example, Tony Lauck's modification described in Perlman's _Interconnections_ (1st Ed), page 225. A presentation at the last NANOG reviews current approaches to millisecond-range IGP convergence: http://www.nanog.org/mtg-0010/igp.html While the research here involved IS-IS, it's still applicable. There is enough interest in millisecond convergence that if there were spare resources in the router, I'm afraid supporting this is a higher priority than what-if's. >[snipped] >> _ FAQ, list archives, and subscription info: http://www.groupstudy.com/list/cisco.html Report misconduct and Nondisclosure violations to [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Re: CDP protocol
Actually, that's not 100% true. I don't know all the reasoning behind it, and perhaps a Cisco switch can be told to forward CDP, but in 2 cases just today I saw that CDP info did not make it through Cisco CATs (I could see the CAT, but not the other routers connected to it, even though we were on the same subnet). For non-CDP aware switches, your statement is true of course. -- Jason Roysdon, CCNA, MCSE, CNA, Network+, A+ List email: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Homepage: http://jason.artoo.net/ Cisco resources: http://r2cisco.artoo.net/ "Priscilla Oppenheimer" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote in message [EMAIL PROTECTED]">news:[EMAIL PROTECTED]... > A CDP-enabled interface learns about all other CDP-enabled devices on its > LAN, so I'm not sure why you would wonder about it learning about the C5505 > and the 1900. Re: IP routing tables
ok, then "sh run" is just about it I guess. Since all you can see is the "installed" route and it wouldn't be nice to fail a route on production router for a test. Something like a feasible successor in EIGRP but for statics is probably close to what you want - interesting idea! Re: Multicast - when is it covered
BSCN is strictly routing protocols (RIP, OSPF, EIGRP, BGP), so I can't see why multicast would be covered on it. I don't recall it being on there, but I took the exam two months ago. -- Jason Roysdon, CCNA, MCSE, CNA, Network+, A+ List email: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Homepage: http://jason.artoo.net/ Cisco resources: http://r2cisco.artoo.net/ "Dyland Desmarais" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote in message [EMAIL PROTECTED]">news:[EMAIL PROTECTED]... > > Is multicast ip's covered in the BSCN portion of the CCNP or is it covered > later? > Thanx > > Dyland > > -- -- > --- > Nothing like a de-motivational poster to lighten the spirit . . . > http://www.thinkgeek.com/stuff/posters.html > > _ > FAQ, list archives, and subscription info: http://www.groupstudy.com/list/cisco.html > Report misconduct and Nondisclosure violations to [EMAIL PROTECTED] > _ FAQ, list archives, and subscription info: http://www.groupstudy.com/list/cisco.html Report misconduct and Nondisclosure violations to [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Re: my messages are filtered?
I think that there are some problems with their news servers. Right now I can send to groupstudy.com but not groupstudy.jobs. They've been pretty slow for me the last two days also.
