RE: Need a helper to answer four questions [7:6974]
Actually, deleted aren't reported down by signalling, if you mean that the FR switch sends LMI info about them. Deleted means that they aren't being reported by LMI at all, but the router knows about them. If the PVC is down but the FR switch knows about it, it will be reported as inactive. It can be configured on the router and still be inactive, if the circuit's broken (e.g. a problem at the other end of the PVC). If you do a 'debug frame lmi', every minute the status of each PVC is reported by the switch. There will be a message for each active and inactive PVC (with status 0x2 and 0x0 respectively), but no message for deleted PVCs, because the switch doesn't know about them. Caveat - info above regarding switch messages applies to LMI type ANSI. I don't know if it applies to all LMI types. Also, partial mesh doesn't necessarily mean hub and spoke, although it's a common configuration. It just means full mesh with some of the links removed, which may turn it into hub and spoke or may just turn it into a collection of random links (hopefully bearing some resemblance to optimum traffic patterns :-) JMcL -- Forwarded by Jenny Mcleod/NSO/CSDA on 04/06/2001 02:36 pm --- Doug Lockwood @groupstudy.com on 04/06/2001 06:26:20 am Please respond to Doug Lockwood Sent by: [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] cc: Subject: RE: Need a helper to answer four questions [7:6974] 1. What is the two status on PVC mode ? In SVC, which have three status (call setup , transfer and call terminate). I have seen 3 on both ATM and Frame Relay: Active, inactive and deleted. Active were circuits that are up Inactive were VC's that were not configured on that router that are discovered by signaling Deleted are VC's that are reported down by signaling. 4. What is benefit of partial mesh compare with fully mesh? It will use less routers or use less virtual circuits ? A partial mesh costs less, compared to a full mesh. It will use the same number of routers, but less PVC's. Each pvc costs money and adds complexity. However, if most of the traffic is not destined for the hub, the hub and spoke adds latency and uses bandwidth on both links. Both designs are appropriate, depending on the nature of the traffic. Hope this helps. Re: BRI0 Backup Interface for Ethernet Primary Interface [7:7041]
My config: interface Ethernet1 backup delay 0 3 backup interface BRI0 router eigrp 10 network 172.26.0.0 ip route 172.20.20.0 255.255.255.0 10.10.9.5 200 That's too skimpy for a reliable diagnostic. Can you post your whole configuration to the list? (Sanitize as necessary.) A few things you may want to try or check: - I don't think you need the backup statements in that case. What triggers dialing using the BRI isn't e1 going down, but traffic to 172.20.20.0/24 after EIGRP removes the route to that through e1. - Is 10.10.9.5 reachable with e1 down? Does pinging it bring up bri0? - When you say bri0 doesn't come up, do you mean when e1 goes down, when the EIGRP route goes away, or when there's traffic for 172.20.20.0/24 and the route's down? On Mon, 4 Jun 2001, KM Reynolds wrote: Hi Everyone, I need to configure a ISDN link as backup for the primary interface. The primary interface is Ethernet1. I researched a numbers of books and they all are talk about serial or frame relay interface as the primary. I was able to search the archives and I found the identical problem that I am encountering. The post stated that yes the BRI0 interface can work as a backup for an ethernet interface. The following is a paste of the post(by Howard Berkowitz): Yes. The key to the solution is to use a low-overhead routing protocol such as OSPF or EIGRP as a layer 3 keepalive mechanism. Set up OSPF or EIGRP to define a path to the destination using the Ethernet. Set up a static route with administrative distance greater than that of the routing protocol (at least 200 is a good idea), with this static route going to the next hop address of the remote ISDN interface. If OSPF or EIGRP stop seeing hellos across the Ethernet, they will drop the route. The static route will now float up into the routing table, and you will get dial-on-demand routing across the ISDN. When OSPF sees its route again, after the Ethernet is back up, the Ethernet route will replace the ISDN in the active routing table, and the inactivity timer on the ISDN will disconnect it. I have followed the instructions, but no luck. When I shutdown the ethernet interface the BRI0 backup interface will not come up. The question I have are: 1. If I administratively shutdown the ethernet interface is that the same as if I disconnected the cable so that the e1 interface will not see a keepalive. 2. I did not see any other treads as to if solution worked. Has anyone run into this situation and has an answer or suggest anything. My config: interface Ethernet1 backup delay 0 3 backup interface BRI0 router eigrp 10 network 172.26.0.0 ip route 172.20.20.0 255.255.255.0 10.10.9.5 200 Lastly, one of the books (Internetworking Troubleshooting by C. Long) stated something about layer 2 and the no keepalive option. It didn't go further on this issue and don't know if I understood it. If someone can explain, it would be much appreciated. If yes, can you show me how is the command look like? Hi, I guess you can config a static nat mapping and reverse the inside and outside interface. Mike, Try this instead, ip nat inside source static tcp 192.168.0.100 25 25 extendable This statement will allow mail to your rfc1918 addressed mail bridgehead server. With Cisco's implementation you can actually redirect ports to different output ports unlike most Linksys and Netgear cable/modem routers, have fun and secure your mail realy! The only difference from what you are asking is this is on a port by port basis, I am not familiar of a way to do full 1to1 NAT to virtual IP. Also I have not found any documentation supporting the ability to add Conduit(Pix, similar to ACL)statements or access-list's to these statics so use them at your own risk. HTH You can use a secondary address if you need Virtual addresses I beleive, I have tested with secondary's on the internal site but not the external. backup plan for a campus [7:7052]
hiya folks :) happy monday I'm thinking of backup solutions for a network I'm consulting for. This network consists of 7 Vlans of which 5 are used for production. The core switch is a Cat 6509 with gig uplinks to 9 closets with about 1500 nodes total. Incase the Cat catches on fire I would like to have a borg like spanning tree festival that will make the network at least usable till smartnet kicks in and replaces things. To each closet we have multiple fibers running that are unused that I can use. To the best of my little knowledge of design of networks. What Im thinking is a smaller cat3508 as a redundant link to the closets. Spanning tree will do it's job on the trunks. But this is just a bunch of 35xx switches and intervlan routing is not taken care of. Now, here I have a 2620 with a Fast Ethernet capable of ethernet trunks. if need be I can install another Fast Ethernet card in it. This would do the inter-vlan routing. questions: Is this a good idea? Any better ideas for it? Where the heck would I put the router to do the intervlan stuff and what would tell the switches to use it as such. Can I just plug it into a peripheral trunked 3524 and let er rip or does it have to be on the temp backbone switch? your design expertise would be GREATLY___ appreciated. This company is in the middle of layoffs like mad. Soon it will be back to paper like the '60s :| But anyways this is what keeps me paid. Links, replies, money, free cheeze, coupons appreciated! with regards to the contents of the exam, I am reminded of the time I told my son that when I was his age I could name all the presidents of the IUnited States, to which he answered there were only 5 or six of them back then :- with regards to the value of the CCIE, whatever that may be, like it or not, there are tens of thousands of us wannabes in the queue. Assuming normal progress, that tells me that in 5 more years, there will be tens of thousands of CCIE's. Ain't nothing anyone can do about that. Louie, let me ask - if you were to walk into the lab tomorrow, do you think you could pass? if not, of what value is your CCIE? I have a sneaking suspoicion that most CCIE's, unless they passed the lab very recently, would not get through it again without some devoted study. kinda like passing the bar, or the CPA exam? Chuck tride hard to keep out of this one, but. Louie Belt wrote in message [EMAIL PROTECTED]">news:[EMAIL PROTECTED]... (Voice was already on the lab prior to these items being removed.) My concern is with the material that is not focused on teaching you networking (I have no problem with that), but on the material the simply teaches you how to pass the test (kind of like all of the Microsoft braindump material available - desinged only to help you pass the test). I agree there's more information available, but after having sat through a 2 week CCIE lab prep class... I think the information just gets you in the ballpark. It's awful easy for someone who's already gotten their CCIE (which when they passed the lab probably could be quoted as saying something like that was the most difficult thing I've ever seen) to now say Sure.. make it as difficult as possible I don't know many CCIEs personally. Only a couple, and both of them said that given the time constraints of the lab (2 days), it is extremely difficult. So I don't think jamming it into 1 day just because Cisco is too cheap to spring for more testing centers to keep up with demand is a resonable solution. Isn't this why Cisco is contemplating making it 1 day? Not to raise the bar of the level of the exam, but simply because they're testing centers can't handle the demand. Mashing into 1 day, IMHO, would be a very poor decision. Agreeing with Brad, do all of the CCIEs that are out there have a problem with leaving the bar where it was when you passed it? It only seems fair. Mike W. Bradley J. Wilson wrote in message [EMAIL PROTECTED]">news:[EMAIL PROTECTED]... If I weren't up to the challenge, I wouldn't be on this newsgroup. Do we need to dump some dirt on the top of Everest now that it's been conquered by someone else ahead of me? If Cisco wants to make the test tougher, they're well within their rights to do so.
Re: Cisco moving to a one day lab? [7:6735]
Hi, Great. Nowadays you have IPSec, MPLS, Voice, Optical and you still need CLNS/CLNP for IS-IS. You can also argue whether Appletalk or IPX should be removed or not. These are important protocols that should be placed in an add-on certification for Desktop or Client/server issues. Me thinks people are right claiming that in IOS 9.xx or 10.xx times the exam was easier. It's the sheer amount of topics and their synergies that are killing us now. I'd happily trade X.25 or DecNet versus MPLS or IPsec ;-). Just kidding, these topics are far too interesting. Besides, hopefully we all learned from the failure of the Design CCIE. It is not possible to measure one's ability in design and architecture objectively. Hence, me thinks the CCND is pointless and waste of time too. One can also argue whether a CCIE lab based on time-pressure and protocol memorization is the best way of measuring a candidate's ability in network engineering. Re: BRI0 Backup Interface for Ethernet Primary Int [7:7048]
Is your ISDN interface on the same network as 10.10.9.5? Maybe try ip route 172.20.20.0 255.255.255.0 BRI0 200 instead. THis will force the BRI interface up if the route is used. Can you do an isdn call command to bring up the isdn manually? Try debug ppp auth and various debug isdn commands, you should be able to find out what is happening. Also, your eigrp network statement is a different network to your static route. Is the static route syntax correct? If I have something incorrect here, pls let me know, as I am trying to learn from your problem too! Symon --- My config: interface Ethernet1 backup delay 0 3 backup interface BRI0 router eigrp 10 network 172.26.0.0 ip route 172.20.20.0 255.255.255.0 10.10.9.5 200 That's too skimpy for a reliable diagnostic. I try to replace another Supervisor module and upgarde it's CatOS to 5.5.7 too. the problem occurs again. Does any cisco doc. mention this problem? Does anyone have experience on it? Please help me very very urgent. Thank you very much. Re: Problem with home network [7:6922]
Ok, I changed the HUP with a 10/100 MB switch. That fixed the problem. Why? I have no idea. It is quite puzzling how a hub would affect the connection one hop away. I am wondering if it is a combination of the hub/ethernet card/ and software problem (as described in another response). This started when I upgraded the kernel to the latest version. Anyway changing the hub fixed the problem. I just bugs the heck out of me. Take care, Paul Borghese W. When you cable the two machine together directly, they can communicate in full-duplex, which is most likely the reason the problem goes away when not using the hub. They have a pretty poor history as a defence contractor though. They managed to squander millions/billions on a British Version of AWACS which bellyflopped. We ended up buying American again. They could not get the Radar to work properly. RE: MS exhcnage Security over PIX [7:7046]
There's a way to prevent relaying on Exchange 5.5 and it's posted on MS Technet. The link is http://www.microsoft.com/TechNet/exchange/relay.asp and it has nothing to do with the Pix. If you're allowing traffic from the Internet to your Exchg server, then you should only permit access to the ports required for mail traffic. I think the fixup protocol smtp could help in preventing certain attacks by only allowing specific commands to be sent to your mail server but you still need to limit access to the server. Re: BRI0 Backup Interface for Ethernet Primary Interface [7:7069]
Thanks for the reply, You are correct on your first point. The post in the archive, by Howard, I realize it does NOT make mention of dial backup. I think this is my error, I need to delete the backup interface command. I think the dial backup is meant for a serial interface (frame relay, X-25,etc.), this is because layer 2 can be detected when it goes down. So I think in the case of ethernet, the alternate is a floating static route. I am not going to show the whole config, cause I think the backup command is the issue. However if you would like to anyway, let me know. I will give this a try tonight(if some maintenance downtime is available) and let you and everyone know how it works out. Thanks again. KM From: ElephantChild To: KM Reynolds CC: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: BRI0 Backup Interface for Ethernet Primary Interface [7:7027] Date: Mon, 4 Jun 2001 11:18:00 +0200 (CEST) My config: interface Ethernet1 backup delay 0 3 backup interface BRI0 router eigrp 10 network 172.26.0.0 ip route 172.20.20.0 255.255.255.0 10.10.9.5 200 That's too skimpy for a reliable diagnostic. Sorry for the long post. TIA -- Someone approached me and asked me to teach a javascript course. RE: backup plan for a campus [7:7052]
Ahh, don't we all get those wonderfully exorbitant design requirements with multiple tiers of redundancy and so very often a budget to barely implement the base network with no redundancy? Management always expect the network and design guys to come up with some hoodoo design for a kickass network that will never fail. I'm in a similar situation right now. I see all the fanciful notions of 5 nines reliability slowly getting thrown out one by one because of budget constraints. Re: Problem with home network [7:6922]
paul, you may just have been looking at a faulty hub.i`ve seen some strange things with hubs.like being able to ping your gateawy but not bieng able to ping yourself(not loopback).here`s a good test.plug the hub back in with everything live...5 `ll get ya 10 it works fine...(don`t switch anything off..just plug the hub into the mains and then move the network cables)i recon it will work fine there is really no technical (DONT SHOOT,list) answer for this..it`s not a bug in the hub/ethernet protocol or anything it just happens... Windows crahses.hubs don`t like changes (bieng switched on or off) steve From: Paul Borghese Reply-To: Paul Borghese To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: Problem with home network [7:6922] Date: Mon, 4 Jun 2001 09:17:16 -0400 Ok, I changed the HUP with a 10/100 MB switch. Alan Robertson wrote: Paul, If the ethernet driver was setting the card up for 100Mbps, and you were using a 10Mbps Hub, then you'd likely get no connectivity at all, rather than partial connectivity with a high percentage of packet loss. I'd be inclined to look into the duplex settings, as Daniel mentioned. A hub, even a so-called dual-speed hub, doesn't have the capability of providing for full duplex operation. When you cable the two machine together directly, they can communicate in full-duplex, which is most likely the reason the problem goes away when not using the hub. Manually configure both the Linux box, and the PC, for half-duplex operation, and your problem should go away. Alan _ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com. RE: backup plan for a campus [7:7052]
Stephen, Your situation is very common. Especially with military contracts. The Colonel is never wrong, but YOU are, even if you were ordered to implement his solution. Average and mid-level personnel are usually not blamed by insecure/immature management because They were just doing their job and the implication is left unsaid that they were simply average employees - next time an expert will be required, and management begins immediately to hire an expert. No one gets hurt here. However, once the expert is brought in, and the same situation reoccurs, they have to howl point fingers. It's the exceptional and talented who receive a level of professional and personal abuse that doesn't belong in the work place, the military, or any where else. Somehow they see you as strong enough to take it, and assume that your expert opinion if heard would damage them severely. So they have to take you out first. Clients always seem to take advantage of companies who fail at client management/relationships. So leave these guys who wouldn't stand up for you when the situation required it. Remember they still look bad no matter how much is blamed on you. The client will go looking elsewhere, and may even refuse to pay. You should find another job. It's a big wide world out there. - Susan -Original Message- From: Stephen Skinner [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Monday, June 04, 2001 9:58 AM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: backup plan for a campus [7:7052] yes they did cut my budget.yes i told them it was a bad idea and yes they made me do it . all it took was a UPS brownout to show them i was right.for my troubles .. i was blamed by the customer and shunned by my employer... all in all a good days work.. steve (once buggered twice shy) From: Carroll Kong Reply-To: Carroll Kong To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: backup plan for a campus [7:7052] Date: Mon, 4 Jun 2001 09:56:28 -0400 At 09:33 AM 6/4/01 -0400, Stephen Skinner wrote: once apon a time there was a man who was given a spec to build a network with full redundency...the spec he put togother cost WAY to much and need severly cutting down...he told them not to do it but they ordered him to .so he did it the network fell over and the company sued for designing a crap network ...who got the blame..the man with his NAME on the design doc. have fun steve 1) I am confused. no ip classless [7:7100]
In what situation would you use the command no ip classless? Cisco's site says ip classless --- This command allows the software to forward packets that are destined for unrecognized subnets of directly connected networks. The packets are forwarded to the best supernet route. no ip classless --- When this feature is disabled, the software discards the packets when a router receives packets for a subnet that numerically falls within its subnetwork addressing scheme, if there is no such subnet number in the routing table and there is no network default route. When would you use this in the real world? RE: Comments on my Home Lab! [7:7108]
I presume that the 8/16 is flash and memory. If it is then I would say that you need a good few more routers. Although you do configure a token ring switch in the lab I have heard that it is a very minimal config on this. The other switch in use is the cat 5000, so there is no need to have any more switches but plenty need to have at least another 4 routers. My lab has 9 routers and on some of the Bootcamp labs that is just enough. For lab scenarios buy the bootcamp labs there is quite simply no better! -Original Message- From: JC [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: 04 June 2001 18:41 To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Comments on my Home Lab! IP Multicast Configuration [7:7114]
Hi Friends I have 2 checkpoint Firewalls configured for high availability and load balancing mode. I need to configure the IP Multicast on both the Internal and external interfaces of both firewall. I have configured the common virtual IP on both the external and internal I/Fs. I am using 2900 XL series switch with 12.0(5)XU for connecting both the internal and external I/Fs of the firewall. I need to configure all these 4 interface for multicast grouping. So if there is traffic flow across the FW then the traffic should be forwarded to both the I/Fs. What I need to do to configure IP multicast on the Switch. I think CGMP is by default enabled. Please give me some guidance. regards imran _ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com. Think about another two serial interfaces on the 4000M. A router that can be used as a terminal server is good. 2509/2511 are most common. I don't see any ISDN BRI interfaces. You'll want some. 2503 Depending on budget you might want to stay with the 2500 series or spring for the newer 2600s. To do trunking on the Cat5K you'll need a router with a 100 Mbs port. 2620/2621 would do it. To run the newer Enterprise code on the 2500s you will need 16 Flash or use MZMaker. Transparent Bridging ? [7:7126]
Hi Group, I vill say ziss only vonce. Okay, its my second attempt at trying to work out how I can bridge IP across to 2500's. I have 2 2500's configured with no ip routing. 2 PC's are connected at either end, i.e one to bridge 1 and one to bridge 2. I have a sniffer on both PC's. I am attempting to ping from one PC to the other. IEEE spanning tree is applied on both bridges. The bridges are connected via a serial cable and the serial ports of the bridges as well as the Ethernet ports are in bridge group 1. I have verified spanning tree operation and one of the serial ports has been elected root port on bridge 1, the other bridge is the designated bridge. Ref : Radia Perlman, Interconnections p.83. So far so good. I have configured the PC's with a default gateway to the IP address of each of the bridges. When I attempt to ping from one PC to the other, I can see from my Sniffer trace that the PC ARP's for the MAC Address of the bridge, this ARP is successful and the PC then sends out an ICMP echo request. This echo request appears to be my problem since the destination MAC address of this packet contains the Ethernet Mac address of the local bridge and the local bridge consequently disregards the packet. Should the PC have an ARP entry installed for the destination IP address that I am pinging ? Has anyone achieved this scenario ? or am I way off mark with my thinking here. The reason I set this LAB up was because so many questions appear to be being asked at CCIE written level akin to this setup i.e can PC 1 ping PC 2 in similar arrangement using (RSRB/DLSW+/SRB etc) Any comments welcome. Tell us Louie what did you use. Don - Original Message - From: Bradley J. Wilson To: Sent: Saturday, June 02, 2001 7:13 PM Subject: Re: Cisco moving to a one day lab? [7:6735] Well, again, Sir Edmund, just because the newcomers can be better-informed before their attempts doesn't mean that the challenge needs to be altered or is less of a challenge for the individual. Again, I'm not against making certs tougher to achieve. But it sounds like there's a touch of bitterness that these study guides weren't around way back when...well, that's just the way life is. Making the CCIE tougher and still calling it the CCIE is like asking runners to run a 400m race, but then making them run 500m without telling them. ;-) Besides, the argument about the study materials is subjective. Was CCO around when you took the CCIE? Were other engineers around who were studying for it? Were used routers around for you to purchase, and perhaps set up for others to telnet into? I'm sure there were - if you (and/or others) didn't make use of them, then that's water under the source-route bridge. If you want someone to be angry at, be angry at the people who took the CCIE, passed or not, and then went out and wrote books on how to study for the CCIE. But I personally don't think these people are doing a disservice to the CCIE, nor are they devaluing it - and with a consistent 80% failure rate, they're certainly not making it less challenging. The study guides, etc. make it more of a group effort, and there's nothing wrong with that - not against the rules, not against the NDA, and our society wins because we're able to learn from (and teach to) one another, thereby filling the desperate need we have today for knowledgeable network engineers. Louie if you walk into a totally dark room and fall into a three foot hole, how many feet have you fallen. If you walk into an amply lit room and fall into a three foot hole, how many feet have you fallen. The bar hasn't been lowered the situation just got brighter. You didn't obtain the needed skills by birth, you had to obtain them somewhere. Obviously they are easier to find now. I would venture to say that anything that is on the Lab exam is freely available on the CCO site.and was when you prepared for your exam, condensening that info and repackaging it just makes it easier to prepare. How many feet do you have to climb to get out of that hole lights on or off? 3 When I decided to obtain my CCIE in 98 there was probably only a hand full of books. I am glad I waited, got my DP/NP a deluxe lab and plenty of resources. Instead of trying it with a handful of Cisco press books and maybe Giles. Re: Transparent Bridging ? [7:7126]

RE: no ip classless [7:7100]
If you were running RIP V1 on your network, correct design would dictate that all the local networks must appear in the routing table of your routers. If one of your users accesses a network not in the table, the router would send an icmp network unreachable with no IP classless and an icmp timeout error (after a long wait) with ip classless. This behavior prevents some routing loops, prevents traffic to nonexistant devices and is good design. Frame Relay Traffic Shaping [7:7137]
Got a question on traffic shaping. Have a couple high speed frame pipes going into data center/server farm locations. Speeds are 9.264MBPS at datacenter, 6.176MBPS going into primary server farm, and 4.632MBPS going into a less-used server location. Remote sites are running from 128K to 1.544Meg. I have been playing with traffic shaping a bit, and need to make 2 settings. One is for times with no congestion, the second entry is for times with congestion. All sites are running zeroK CIR (okay, not my call, but need to support it). I was thinking for the first stab at it, to make peak speed equal to the port speed of the remote location, and average speed equal to average prime shift utilization of the PVC group (look at all 1544 ports, average out utilization - then set average to this rate). * enable traffic shaping, use BECN (Carrier does not use ForeSight) int hssi8/0/0 frame-relay adaptive-shaping becn * * make the map classes *set PEAK at port speed of remote site *set AVERAGE at prime shift average utilization at remote site? map-class frame-relay 1544K_Port frame-relay traffic-rate average 1544000 * ^ * | *average out prime shift usage for 1.544 ports * map-class frame-relay 768K_Port frame-relay traffic-rate average 768000 * ^ * | *average out prime shift usage for 768KB ports * map-class frame-relay 512K_Port frame-relay traffic-rate average 512000 * ^ * | *average out prime shift usage for 512KB ports * map-class frame-relay 256K_Port frame-relay traffic-rate average 256000 * map-class frame-relay 128K_Port frame-relay traffic-rate average 128000 * * Apply Traffic-shaping map classes to subinterfaces int hssi8/0/0.101 class 1544K_Port * int hssi8/0/0.173 class 512K_Port * int hssi8/0/0.202 class 256K_Port * end Any thoughts (other than buy CIR) - maybe set average to a percentage of peak? I don't want to get into custom queue lists and priority queuing just yet. Would need to maybe break out a sniffer and get a look at traffic then work with customer on defining priorities. Re: no ip classless [7:7100]
Cisco routers by default are still classfull, even though the internet has long since gone classless. For a router to effective understand CIDR routes that don't fall on classfull boundrys it is necessary to turn off the default by executing the command ip classless If for some reason you live in a time warp, and your network is fully classfull, and you just got a used router from someone who was using it on a classless network, and you wanted to convert it back to being classfull you would execute the command no ip classless. Why Classless? Lets say you have a large network, and you happen to own a class A network. Lets say the 5.0.0.0 network. Lets say that one of the interfaces on your router connects to another router which connects to your larger network. Let say that on your end the interface address is 5.0.0.1 /30 and on the other end the address is 5.0.0.2 /30. Lets say you have a default route pointing out the serial interface that has the 5.0.0.1 interface. If you then tried to reach something else in the 5.0.0.0 network, say 5.1.2.3, the packet would go to your router. (remember our router is configured for classfull, the default). .PICTURE THE SCENE... it`s 8.30am your palms are sweating so much you try and pull open the door of the cisco building your hands slips of the rail and you land smack on your rump.a man walks past trying not to laugh with the words Cisco Proctor emblazoned on a badge pinned to his jacket... BAD START you at last walk through the door and attempt to speak your name to the receptionist ...who replies.. i don`t have a cuuuccc laarieee on my listso you write it down ..she smiles back oh !chuck ... she says the smile becomes a frown ,becomes a look of horror as she see`s CCIE LAB ...written next to you name .and points you in the direction of the coffeethere you run into me..Barking at the moon shaped light ( WAY too much caffeine)..and cast your eyes on the other sleep deprived (half mad) students all talking in ios commands .. a man runs up to you and says THERE CAN`T BE ANY IPX ON THE LAB CAN THERE..CAN THERE and promptly passes out ,mumblings something about how stupid the tic is suddenly you cheer-up.heyif everyone else is this bad i should be fine..and proceed to guzzle 2 pints of Red-bull ...just then the proctor strolls out..(GIT ...you think he`s already passed the exam..) GENTLEMENjust a quick note ...the lab is now scheduled for one daythe plus side to this is that you`ll know by tonight if you have passed ...the bad news is that you now have 3 hours to build and configure the network...( impossible you think, and you would be right)...1 hour for lunch and 4 hours to fix what i did to your network ...as he turns he says... yesterday i ended a long-term relationship and i`m in a VERY bad mood.to which news i stop howling and start crying ...everyone else simply picks up there bags and says Rollocks! ...and leaves...what you do now is up to you But i hardly think that something as simple as a one day lab is worth worrying about ...Hey its only the rest of your life. howling mad steve From: Chuck Larrieu Reply-To: Chuck Larrieu To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: Cisco moving to a one day lab? Rumour of new lab test centre in London. Anyone confirm or deny. Gaz Gernot W. Schmied wrote in message [EMAIL PROTECTED]">news:[EMAIL PROTECTED]... Man Chuck, I didn't know you were that old? Chuck's response actually brought up something interesting. How many current CCIE's could just walk in and pass the lab again? I know several CCIE's that could walk in off the street and pass the CCIE lab without a problem, but I also know a couple of CCIE's that would take another 3 or 4 attempt and months of study to pass again. What if cisco upped the ante and made a mandatory recert every 3 years by re-taking the lab exam? That would keep the CCIE certification respectable wouldn't it? just my $0.02 tim Tim Medley Network Architect VoIP Group iReadyWorld -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]]On Behalf Of Chuck Larrieu Sent: Monday, June 04, 2001 9:00 AM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: Cisco moving to a one day lab? It's awful easy for someone who's already gotten their CCIE (which when they passed the lab probably could be quoted as saying something like that was the most difficult thing I've ever seen) to now say Sure.. make it as difficult as possible I don't know many CCIEs personally. Only a couple, and both of them said that given the time constraints of the lab (2 days), it is extremely difficult. So I don't think jamming it into 1 day just because Cisco is too cheap to spring for more testing centers to keep up with demand is a resonable solution. Isn't this why Cisco is contemplating making it 1 day? Not to raise the bar of the level of the exam, but simply because they're
