Re: Gatekeeper not completing calls [7:52315]
Thanks Hamid, the register e164 command registered the dial-peers and successfully completed calls between the gateways. I will be using tech-prefixes, so the link to the call routing document is much appreciated. Regards. From: Hamid Reply-To: Hamid To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: Gatekeeper not completing calls [7:52315] Date: Thu, 29 Aug 2002 19:34:21 GMT You have to configure the gateways so that they register the required dial-peers with the gatekeeper. For example: Dial-peer voice 101 pots destination-pattern 320T register --- This makes the gateway register this dial-peer with the gatekeeper. Port 0/0 When the gateway is registering with the gatekeeper, it will register all configured dial-peers (with the register command) with the GK. If you are using tech-prefixes, you can do it through tech-prefixes as well. RE: Cisco Netacad for 640-603 [7:52358]
I took this, and the Cisco Press CCNP BSCN Certification Study Guide. I found that doing the 640-603 was probably the best thing I did to prepare (other then practice labs) The interactive labs were great, and if you make note cards of everything you feel is important while going through the course you will pass. It had been a year between my CCNA and when I studied for 640-603 and I had forgotten most everything, and had not touched a router since then. This course was a great refresher and helped me pass the exam my first time. - Brian -Original Message- From: Jason Weden [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Friday, August 30, 2002 7:57 AM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Cisco Netacad for 640-603 [7:52358] Hello, Was wondering if anyone has taken the Cisco Network Academy semester-long course (sem. 5) for 640-603 (Routing)? RE: what to put ???? [7:51574]
Chuck -- Another thought on this -- A section entitled Certifications and Examinations. First list the certifications, then skipping a line -- list the successful examinations. e.g. CVoice (Cisco Voice over IP Examination) CCIE Qualification Examination (Written) This accomplished two objectives. Re: Cisco Netacad for 640-603 [7:52358]
I got my CCNA through the network academy. Cisco has some great stats on their networking academy program. The best part of which is that those who go through and complete the netacad typically score in the top 10% of those who take the respective Cisco tests. In looking into the subject when I first started, I discovered that the netacad is actually geared toward collegiate level education and therefore is very intense study. Just my opinion on it. I have all 8 netacad semesters on CD. :) Message Posted at: http://www.groupstudy.com/form/read.php?f=7i=52372t=52358 -- FAQ, list archives, and subscription info: http://www.groupstudy.com/list/cisco.html Report misconduct and Nondisclosure violations to [EMAIL PROTECTED]

RE: Reloading VIP [7:52380]
This link is for the single slot reload feature, but I have never seen any type of command to actually execute the single slot reload, this may just be a feature that the router can use to reload only a single problem card automatically in the event that it finds it has to reload that card. Anyone have anything to add to this, I have always been curious? Of course you could do an online removal and insertion by removing the VIP, waiting one or two minutes, and then putting it back in. This works for me about 80% of the time, the other 20% the router will start to do things that require it to be reloaded, so I only schedule VIP OIR during a maintenance window, or of course unscheduled in an extreme emergency. I have heard they remedied a lot of the problems with OIR in later IOS releases, can anyone confirm that? http://www.cisco.com/univercd/cc/td/doc/product/software/ios120/120newft/120 limit/120s/120s13/slcr.htm -Original Message- From: Chris Headings [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Friday, August 30, 2002 2:22 PM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Reloading VIP [7:52380] Is there anyway to manually reload a single VIP card without having to reboot the router? Try my approach.. Tell people no and put it in your security policy. They violate the policy they get fired.. Oh wait a minute, I think that goes along with cut-off desktop internet access I guess. Its is a VERY effective deterrent though don't you think Or I guess you could also just route your home subnet ( not just your single home IP ) to Null0. I have found that effective of blocking sites when I don't have the ability to walk around and see what people are doing... Trust me, for every way you can find out, I can find a way to block it. Re: ICQ and blocking the thing-PIX [7:52285]
I may be off my rocker, but I think it's possible that you could set up an IDS system that blocks access to any IP on the outside that sends packets to your network that look like ICQ. At the very least it could record the addresses for future inclusion into ACLs. This won't block the people who set up SSH tunnelling as described in other messages, but you can make it a violation of security policy to use that kind of back door. Re: Reloading VIP [7:52380]
There is no command, this command automatically reloads the line card microcode in the event of a single line card failure where in the past a complete c-bus reset occured. In my previous post I mentioned you can reset the VIP from the if-console and I had SLCR enabled which does make the reload quicker but it still burped, though I am running beat code. It was better than a complete reload of the box though as far as downtime is concerned. Dave Lupi, Guy wrote: This link is for the single slot reload feature, but I have never seen any type of command to actually execute the single slot reload, this may just be a feature that the router can use to reload only a single problem card automatically in the event that it finds it has to reload that card. RE: ICQ and blocking the thing-PIX [7:52285]
ICQ now has a web based version also, just go the web put in your ID and your on. Now being devils advocate I am aware of the trojans and viruses that get spread on ICQ, but if it is not interferring with work progress then why such the hassle. It seems as if your burning more cycles trying to block it when it almost seems to me that this is a loosing battle. The only recourse I think you have is to go to HR with your security plan have them put this in your computer ussage policy for work and then brief everyone of the employees why this is a no no. I have sniffed the web version with sniffer pro and it looks to me it strictly uses port 80. But just by blocking it and I do not know if you are notifying anyone or if this is in your security poilicy it just seems like you're a loose renegade on the network to implement your own security policy which will tick people off. I think if you take my approach above and people understand why your are doing it then it is less likely to turn whirlwinds into a hurricane of upset users especially if it was allowed in the past. NO BASHING please :) you may have took these steps already then if so the only thing to do is report them to HR especially if it is causing problems for you on the network and putting business assets at risk. -Original Message- From: Shawn Heisey [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Friday, August 30, 2002 4:21 PM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: ICQ and blocking the thing-PIX [7:52285] I may be off my rocker, but I think it's possible that you could set up an IDS system that blocks access to any IP on the outside that sends packets to your network that look like ICQ. oddly enough, they all did fall in the 172.26.128.0/24 network as follows: Eisenhower loop0 is 172.26.128.1 255.255.255.0 Nixon loop0 is 172.26.128.2 255.255.255.0 Kennedy loop0 is 172.26.128.3 255.255.255.0 Roosevelt loop0 is 172.26.128.4 255.255.255.0 Instead, I changed them all to 255.255.255.255 addresses so each host was advertised individually as it's own network and it worked fine. I know this would work in OSPF, but it seems that EIGRP handles it differently. Unless you've been doing this a long time you need to be looking at either CCNP or CCIP. CCIE is not a read a book pass a test kind of certification. Bizarre Console Behavior [7:52416]
All, I'm totally stumped here. Here's my situation... I have taken a bunch of roll-over cables, snipped of one end, and punched them onto a patch panel that I had laying around. When I need to switch back and forth between consoles, I just move my patch cable from port to port on the patch panel (yeah, I know, the access-server is the next thing on my list to buy). I'm using minicom on RH 7.0 and it works great...except for one of my 2501's. I have tried multiple cables off of multiple ports on the patch panel, and all cables work on all the other routers. This one 2501 just refuses to accept input from Mincom, though it will give normal output to the console. Now here's the weird thing...If I plug a patch cable from the patch panel into my Win2K box, the router works just fine. What is it about this one router that Minicom won't work with it? Any thoughts? Thanks. RE: Bizarre Console Behavior [7:52416]
Solved it! For some strange reason, this router, unlike ALL of my other equipment (6 other routers and a Cat5k switch) was having a problem with the fact that my terminal was set to for hardware flow control. This was nothing in the config, as there wasn't one on the router, it must just have been the version of the software it's running. (11.2-blah-blah...old). It's a new router to me, so I'm certainly going to upgrade it now! Thanks for reading! FW: RE: CCIE qualification Exam, misconception? Lo [7:52235]
I've spent the last three months updating Cramsession, Boson and Quizware test preparation materials, so I've been buried in this for a while now. I would definitely agree that the new blueprint is much harder then before; and I think Bernard's suggestion about preparing as if for the lab is a great idea. I would, however, like to offer a slightly different perspective on this. Many people who passed the old written exam were nowhere near ready to face a lab attempt. From this point forward, the people enter the lab for the first time will be in a better position to pass; and that might save you time and money in the long run. I feel like what you need to know for the new written is more relevant, not just for the lab, but in the real world at work as well. Perhaps I'm just being overly optimistic, but I don't see this as a pure negative... Just my $.02, let's see if I'm just as well-disposed after I spend the long weekend writing test questions on QoS... :) Thanks all, and good luck with your studying. Re: CCIE OR CCNP [7:52413]
Regardless, it's not as if CCNP study would be a waste of time. Just take the CCNP and consider it part of your CCIE study. Unless you could pass the 4 CCNP tests without studying, then CCNP would be a good place to start. It provides the basic knowledge needed for beginning your CCIE studies. I found that CCNP covered about 50 percent of the basic CCIE topics. After I was done CCNP, I had to learn some basics by myself, such as LAN frame formats, token ring, multicast, voice, dslw+, etc, etc., etc. Anyway, see if you can pass the CCNP tests without studying (maybe buy some practice tests if you don't want to pay the real thing yet). They should be brainless to a CCIE candidate. Re: CCIE Security Lab schedule FYI [7:52281]
The only two places that offer this test is San Jose and Brussels. As you know SJ does not have an opening until April. Brussels has their first opening next week! My company only has a certain amount of money alloted for these test so I can either take it in October or wait until after February. Since I don't feel like waiting I've gone ahead and signed up for Brussels on October 17. That gives me a month and half to get ready. I wasn't prepared to take it so soon so I guess I better catch up! Michael Le, CCIE #6811 --- John Dorffler wrote: I thought I should share some info with the group, especially those interested in pursuing the Security CCIE. I passed the written last week, and the system finally updated last night so that I could register for the lab. By the way, all lab types can be registered for on the web now. According to the online system, the first available date to take the Security lab in San Jose (the only North American site that offers the Security lab) is, ironically, April 1, 2003. That is over 7 months away. Extrapolating, if I have to schedule another date (I'm not so arrogant to assume I will pass the first try, but you never know...) I won't be able to take it again until November 1, 2003. I don't know if Cisco is planning to add more seats in San Jose or other locations anytime soon, so if you are thinking about taking the Security lab you better plan ahead, way ahead.
