Re: Gatekeeper not completing calls [7:52315]

2002-08-30 Thread Tunji Suleiman

Thanks Hamid, the register e164 command registered the dial-peers and
successfully completed calls between the gateways. I will be using
tech-prefixes, so the link to the call routing document is much appreciated.

Regards.

You have to configure the gateways so that they register the required
dial-peers with the gatekeeper. For example:

Dial-peer voice 101 pots

  destination-pattern 320T

register --- This makes the gateway register this dial-peer with the
gatekeeper.

  Port 0/0

When the gateway is registering with the gatekeeper, it will register all
configured dial-peers (with the register command) with the GK.

If you are using tech-prefixes, you can do it through tech-prefixes as
well.
Take a look at:

Hope this helps,

Hamid

hi,

he's right. you connect it to a c7500 with dual RSP boards.
one of the boards is master and active and the otherone is the slave and
has not booted.
so if you want console access all the time to your c7500, you use this
y-cable because it always connects you to the active RSP (e.g for a
console server)

Somebody knows how are the questions with multiple answers in new CCIE RS

it does not indicate how many you must choose. Is this true also in the new

You can connect FXS module to key system.
FXS looks like analog phone for the key system.

You need configure the key system port for analog phone operation mode.

I have enabled ip routing on the router, however, nothing has changed.

From work, I Secure Shell (SSH) back to my Linux Firewall. On my work

I am running X-server (X-Win32 or Xceed) and just tunnel the SSH encryption

RE: Cisco Netacad for 640-603 [7:52358]

2002-08-30 Thread Clark, John

I took this, and the Cisco Press CCNP BSCN Certification Study Guide. I
found that doing the 640-603 was probably the best thing I did to prepare
(other then practice labs) The interactive labs were great, and if you make
note cards of everything you feel is important while going through the
course you will pass. It had been a year between my CCNA and when I studied
for 640-603 and I had forgotten most everything, and had not touched a
router since then. This course was a great refresher and helped me pass the
exam my first time.

they'd like to sell. I only need one, as the router has a singe 4 mb

in it now, and an empty slot for a second. I'm trying not to buy an 8mb
upgrade kit, because I'm going to get a single 8mb stick, and then have
the
existing 4mb stick laying around, as Cisco's doc's say that the two slots
must contain the same size sticks. 8mb will allow me to run the IP PLUS /
IPSEC 56 IOS (12.1.14), but anything heavier and I'd have to move to 16
Mb,
which I'm not convinced at this point I need to do.

So, if anyone has a singe 4 Mb flash stick laying around collecting dust,

Well,

I went though the version 1 of Semester 5 and there was so much info dumped
on you, you have to be dedicated to studying the material and put forth the
effort to keep up. This one is definately not a blow off class.

I did pass the 640-503 so I am not sure what the 603 test is like.

I do know I studied harder for that test than any others and got the lowest
score on it than any other cert test I took to get my CCNP (865).

 Hello,

Was wondering if anyone has taken the Cisco Network Academy semester-long
course (sem. 5) for 640-603 (Routing)? If so, did you find it alone was a
 good prep for the exam?

 Regards,

 My problem is:

 From the 10.1.1.0 network i can ping 10.1.1.17 (ethernet0)
 From the 10.1.1.0 network i can ping 10.128.52.1 (ethernet1)
From the 10.1.1.0 network I can NOT ping 10.258.52.101 (pc on subnet)

I have enabled ip routing on the router, however, nothing has changed.

Can anyone please advise of the command(s) for a static route, if indeed
this is the problem. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

 Thanks

Another thought on this --

A section entitled Certifications and Examinations. First list the
certifications, then skipping a line -- list the successful examinations.
e.g.

CVoice (Cisco Voice over IP Examination)
CCIE Qualification Examination (Written)

This accomplished two objectives. First to inform the reader that the
applicant is pursuing additional certifications, and second to clearly
delineate the Examinations from the Certifications so that there is no
question as to the honesty of the applicant.

Just my thoughts -- but remember there are many ways to legally and

how about this for a thought.

In a section separate from experience, and separate from fully achieved
certifications, a section titled something like:

 Certifications in progress:

 CCNP - BCRAN
 CIPT - Cvoice, DQoS
 etc etc

that way it is clear that these have not been achieved, but are actively
 being pursued.

Personally, I'm from the school of thought that says that one

What do you put on your resume when you pass any one test of

  For example:
If you pass the MCNS test you should put the following:
Cisco Certified Network Professional - Security Specialization (MCNS)

If you pass the CVOICE test you should put the following:
Cisco Certified Network Professional - Voice Specialization (CVOICE)

I have seem some people that they have on their resume CSS1 (how do you

I got my CCNA through the network academy. Cisco has some great stats on
their networking academy program. The best part of which is that those who
go through and complete the netacad typically score in the top 10% of those
who take the respective Cisco tests. In looking into the subject when I
first started, I discovered that the netacad is actually geared toward
collegiate level education and therefore is very intense study. Just my
opinion on it. I have all 8 netacad semesters on CD. :)

the

must contain the same size sticks. 8mb will allow me to run the IP PLUS /

which I'm not convinced at this point I need to do.

EIGRP does not recognize 0.0.0.0. Use
ip default-network 192.168.1.0
instead, and then put
network 192.168.1.0
under your router eigrp config. See Doyle vol. I pp. 756-758 for details.

The other option would have forced EIGRP to run on the interface I was

RE: Reloading VIP [7:52380]

2002-08-30 Thread Lupi, Guy

This link is for the single slot reload feature, but I have never seen any
type of command to actually execute the single slot reload, this may just be
a feature that the router can use to reload only a single problem card
automatically in the event that it finds it has to reload that card. Anyone
have anything to add to this, I have always been curious? Of course you
could do an online removal and insertion by removing the VIP, waiting one or
two minutes, and then putting it back in. This works for me about 80% of
the time, the other 20% the router will start to do things that require it
to be reloaded, so I only schedule VIP OIR during a maintenance window, or
of course unscheduled in an extreme emergency. I have heard they remedied a
lot of the problems with OIR in later IOS releases, can anyone confirm that?

You don't have all your loopbak addresses in the 172.26.128.0/24 network, do
you?

If so, create unique subnets for each loopback.

Ah! redistribute static, and removing the default-network worked!

The other option would have forced EIGRP to run on the interface I was
running RIP on, and thus would defeat the purpose of what I was trying to
do.

Only one problem...why cannot I not get to the loopback addresses I have
placed on each router and included in the eigrp 1 process as network
172.26.128.0/24? Any ideas?

Thanks guys!

Yes from the if-console x you can connect to the VIP and reload it.
Since this is not really supported I tried it and though the RSPs never
reloaded nor changed status, (master/slave) there was about a minute
outage and I had lots of tracebacks and other ugly messages in the log.

If a production net you best get a maintanence window as your mileage
may vary!

Its is a VERY effective deterrent though don't you think

Or I guess you could also just route your home subnet ( not just your single

I have found that effective of blocking sites when I don't have the ability

Trust me, for every way you can find out, I can find a way to block it. We

I have consulted with a training center/cisco network academy that has space

I may be off my rocker, but I think it's possible that you could set up

Re: Reloading VIP [7:52380]

2002-08-30 Thread MADMAN

There is no command, this command automatically reloads the line card
microcode in the event of a single line card failure where in the past a
complete c-bus reset occured. In my previous post I mentioned you can
reset the VIP from the if-console and I had SLCR enabled which does make
the reload quicker but it still burped, though I am running beat code.
It was better than a complete reload of the box though as far as
downtime is concerned.

Anyone
have anything to add to this, I have always been curious? Of course you
could do an online removal and insertion by removing the VIP, waiting one
or
two minutes, and then putting it back in. This works for me about 80% of
the time, the other 20% the router will start to do things that require it
to be reloaded, so I only schedule VIP OIR during a maintenance window, or
of course unscheduled in an extreme emergency. I have heard they remedied
a
lot of the problems with OIR in later IOS releases, can anyone confirm
that?

RE: ICQ and blocking the thing-PIX [7:52285]

2002-08-30 Thread Elijah Savage III

ICQ now has a web based version also, just go the web put in your ID and
your on. Now being devils advocate I am aware of the trojans and viruses
that get spread on ICQ, but if it is not interferring with work progress
then why such the hassle. It seems as if your burning more cycles trying
to block it when it almost seems to me that this is a loosing battle.
The only recourse I think you have is to go to HR with your security
plan have them put this in your computer ussage policy for work and then
brief everyone of the employees why this is a no no. I have sniffed the
web version with sniffer pro and it looks to me it strictly uses port
80.

But just by blocking it and I do not know if you are notifying anyone or
if this is in your security poilicy it just seems like you're a loose
renegade on the network to implement your own security policy which will
tick people off. I think if you take my approach above and people
understand why your are doing it then it is less likely to turn
whirlwinds into a hurricane of upset users especially if it was allowed
in the past.

NO BASHING please :) you may have took these steps already then if so
the only thing to do is report them to HR especially if it is causing
problems for you on the network and putting business assets at risk.

Re: ICQ and blocking the thing-PIX [7:52285]

2002-08-30 Thread Chuck's Long Road

In a complex organization ( complex not meaning size or number of
departments, but in the way people need to work ) one might consider third
party applications such as Web Sense.

A couple of comments below:

 Try my approach..

Tell people no and put it in your security policy. They violate the policy
 they get fired..

CL: that assumes that 1) the policy will be acceptable to management 2) the
policy will be enforced by management and 3) you have the luxury of being
able to fire people for whatever reason you deem fit, trivial or otherwise.
Even in today's bad economy, companies may not have this luxury.

Oh wait a minute, I think that goes along with cut-off desktop internet
 access I guess.

CL: like it or not, internet access at the desktop has become one of those
intangible fringe benefits, right up there with using the photocopier for
personal business, using the telephone for personal business, using the fax
machine for personal business. When was the last time someone got fired for
making persoanl phone calls at work? Or photocopying their tax returns at
work?

Its is a VERY effective deterrent though don't you think

CL: sure - IF management enforces it, or even agrees to it

Or I guess you could also just route your home subnet ( not just your
single
 home IP ) to Null0.
I have found that effective of blocking sites when I don't have the
ability
to walk around and see what people are doing...

Trust me, for every way you can find out, I can find a way to block it. We
may play cat and mouse for a while, but I never tire of it...

CL: works really well until the person you block is some Senior vice
President, or one of the top sales people ( read - revenue producers ) in
the company, and makes the claim that the service is absolutely necessary
for success on the job. That's why this stuff has to work at a policy level,
and cannot nor should be considered a matter for firewall administrators to
deal with.

CL You gots to know your organization.

 Thanks

 Larry

RE: EIGRP default route distribution. [7:52377]

2002-08-30 Thread Robert Cluett

oddly enough, they all did fall in the 172.26.128.0/24 network as follows:

Eisenhower loop0 is 172.26.128.1 255.255.255.0
Nixon loop0 is 172.26.128.2 255.255.255.0
Kennedy loop0 is 172.26.128.3 255.255.255.0
Roosevelt loop0 is 172.26.128.4 255.255.255.0

Instead, I changed them all to 255.255.255.255 addresses so each host was
advertised individually as it's own network and it worked fine. I know this
would work in OSPF, but it seems that EIGRP handles it differently.

The 3524 is a traditional LAN switch - layer 2, The 3550 (with EMI) is
essentially an access sized switch with the IOS functionality of a 6500

designed to push intelligence to the network edge.

The upshoot is sell your 5000 cause it is OLD and wont be in the CCIE lab
exam.

A 3500 XL series switch is to the 3550 what a 10baseT hub was to a catalyst

Recommendation on CCNP book [7:52409]

Hi!
I would like some advice... Which is the best book that your recommend for
the NEW CCNP exam?
Does ciscopress have some book that fits all the new requisits of the new
exam?
Is it worth to buy some old (2001) book... for example... Cisco CCNP
Certification Library (ISBN: 1587200376)... or it's better to wait for a new
book that covers everything about the new exam?
Thanks,

Bizarre Console Behavior [7:52416]

2002-08-30 Thread Kelly Cobean

All,
I'm totally stumped here. Here's my situation... I have taken a bunch of
roll-over cables, snipped of one end, and punched them onto a patch panel
that I had laying around. When I need to switch back and forth between
consoles, I just move my patch cable from port to port on the patch panel
(yeah, I know, the access-server is the next thing on my list to buy). I'm
using minicom on RH 7.0 and it works great...except for one of my 2501's. I
have tried multiple cables off of multiple ports on the patch panel, and all
cables work on all the other routers. This one 2501 just refuses to accept
input from Mincom, though it will give normal output to the console. Now
here's the weird thing...If I plug a patch cable from the patch panel into
my Win2K box, the router works just fine. What is it about this one router
that Minicom won't work with it? Any thoughts? Thanks.

Solved it! For some strange reason, this router, unlike ALL of my other
equipment (6 other routers and a Cat5k switch) was having a problem with the
fact that my terminal was set to for hardware flow control. This was
nothing in the config, as there wasn't one on the router, it must just have

a new router to me, so I'm certainly going to upgrade it now! Thanks for

would definitely agree that the new blueprint is much harder then before;
and I think Bernard's suggestion about preparing as if for the lab is a
great idea.

I would, however, like to offer a slightly different perspective on this.
Many people who passed the old written exam were nowhere near ready to face
a lab attempt. From this point forward, the people enter the lab for the
first time will be in a better position to pass; and that might save you
time and money in the long run. I feel like what you need to know for the
new written is more relevant, not just for the lab, but in the real world at
work as well.

Perhaps I'm just being overly optimistic, but I don't see this as a pure
negative... Just my $.02, let's see if I'm just as well-disposed after I
spend the long weekend writing test questions on QoS... :)

Thanks all, and good luck with your studying. Please let me know if I can
do anything to help...

Yes I talked to Dennis for Boson #3 and he is updating his version weekly.
It's nice to know that I don't have to purchase it again down the road.

Does Boson 4.0 provide good help on the new ccie written.
Or do we have to wait for a newer version of Boson ?

Re: CCIE OR CCNP [7:52413]

2002-08-30 Thread Jay Greenberg

Regardless, it's not as if CCNP study would be a waste of time. Just
take the CCNP and consider it part of your CCIE study. Unless you could
pass the 4 CCNP tests without studying, then CCNP would be a good place
to start. It provides the basic knowledge needed for beginning your
CCIE studies.

I found that CCNP covered about 50 percent of the basic CCIE topics.
After I was done CCNP, I had to learn some basics by myself, such as LAN
frame formats, token ring, multicast, voice, dslw+, etc, etc., etc.

Anyway, see if you can pass the CCNP tests without studying (maybe buy
some practice tests if you don't want to pay the real thing yet). They
should be brainless to a CCIE candidate.

either CCNP or CCIP. CCIE is not a read a book pass a test kind of

Okay, well if I were you I'd take a look at the CCIE outline and decide
where you want to go from there. Depending on your personal experience
you may be able to study for a few months and pass the CCIE written and
pass the lab on the first try...you never know.

Hey Jim,
If this is for real, why don't you post your friends Business Phone
#, email address, and a company name and URL. If this is legit, he'll have
no problem with you doing so, as you are in the right place to find CCIE's
and candidates who are interested in work of this order. If this isn't
legit, shame on you. Anyone else think this sounds a little too good, or am
I the only one who thinks this looks like a headhunter doing some Database
building???

Re: CCIE Security Lab schedule FYI [7:52281]

2002-08-30 Thread Yonkerbonk

The only two places that offer this test is San Jose
and Brussels. As you know SJ does not have an opening
until April. Brussels has their first opening next
week! My company only has a certain amount of money
alloted for these test so I can either take it in
October or wait until after February. Since I don't
feel like waiting I've gone ahead and signed up for
Brussels on October 17. That gives me a month and half
to get ready. I wasn't prepared to take it so soon so
I guess I better catch up!

According to the online system, the first available
 date to take the
Security lab in San Jose (the only North American
 site that offers the
Security lab) is, ironically, April 1, 2003. That is
 over 7 months away.
Extrapolating, if I have to schedule another date
 (I'm not so arrogant to
assume I will pass the first try, but you never
know...) I won't be able to
take it again until November 1, 2003. I don't know
 if Cisco is planning to

anytime soon, so if you are
thinking about taking the Security lab you better
 plan ahead, way ahead.

No I'm not a CCIE, but I'm progressing towards it slowly but surely.
I'm currently CCNP/DP. Well that's a choice you have to make, but keep
in mind that depending on where you plan on taking the lab you may be
waiting a LONG time until you can even get a date.
