2511as-rj software

2001-01-05 Thread Olden Pieterse

Hi there gang

Does anyone ou there have a as2511-rj ?
I need to get some images for this beast that sees all of the inetrfaces
and do x25 to tcp translation .
What does the P at the end of the image stand again for ?

Strange but true
The software for the ordinary 2511 loads onto the as-2511-rj but then you
get the added benefit of not seeing ANY interface at all , zero , zilch and
nothing !!

Waiting in anticipation .

Cheers
Olden

That's very strange. Are you sure that image in the flash
is named exactly as 'system boot' command specifies ? Have
you tried to remove 'system boot' command to see will it
boot from flash ?

Hi there

I had that a while back .
Check if the 3Com puts the right route(leased line) back into the routing
table after the backup dial gets terminated .
We had such a problem so you might want to do some floating static routes to
get all back to normal .

Good luck !

RE: a bcran question

2000-10-06 Thread Olden Pieterse

Hi there

I would reckon its B
A = unique network address = IP address
C= unique physical layer = MAC address
B= The LAPD Flag and Control fields are identical to those of HDLC. The LAPD
Address field can be either 1 or 2 bytes long. If the extended address bit
of the first byte is set, the address is 1 byte; if it is not set, the
address is 2 bytes. The first address field byte contains the service access
point identifier (SAPI), which identifies the portal at which LAPD services
are provided to Layer 3. The C/R bit indicates whether the frame contains a
command or a response. The terminal endpoint identifier (TEI) field
identifies either a single terminal or multiple terminals. A TEI of all ones
indicates a broadcast.

Hope it helps

Cheers

My voice/bri Experience

2000-10-06 Thread Olden Pieterse

Hi there gang

Here is what I have learnt the last couple of days .
Compand-type X-law signalling between the pabx and bri ports (THIS IS
VERY IMPORTANT)
See that the pabx send ALL of the digits across the line !! --->debug voip
ccapi inout ( the top of the output will show you what number has been
sent) You might have to echo your first digit because the PABX has dropped a
digit .

The configs (peers & pots & voice is pretty straightforward) .
The right code is also very important ! We used
c3640-is-mz.120-7.XK1.bin Seems like Cisco had to take a few tries before
getting it right .

Hope it helps a bit

I watched a little video on Layer3 switching from Cisco and I guess
I never thought about this before, but you can have different subnets on
each switch port (layer3 of course)? I also have a network design and I
would really appreciate comments on it. Anyone with Visio and an extra 10
minutes, please let me know and review and make sure I'm on the right track.

RE: Fiber type for 2924M XL switches

2000-10-02 Thread Olden Pieterse

Depending on what module you slap in there .
The 1000baseLX/LH can do single or multimode

How far is your boxes apart ?
Don't go single mode if you don't have to .

How many VLANS are running thru this fabric? The easiest way to set
a
switch as the spanning tree root is the command:

set spanning tree root vlan#

I believe that's the command anyway; I need to consult my switch to
be sure,
and I'm not around it at the moment.

Why are there a lot of recalculations anyway?

Hi there gang
A question plse
We are busy installing a sizable switch network .
Loads of 35XX and one 6509 . Gig fibres running in a star topology
from the
6509 to the 35XX's .
On some of the floors there are redundant UTP between the switches .
Spanning tree is on and igmp is enabled on the 6509 .

Why is there still loops & broadcast storms ? There is a load of IPX
& IP .
Topology changes seems to bog the 6509 down .
It even froze at stages .

Some advice or pointers would be very helpful .

RE: assign dhcp address on ethernet interface?

2000-07-29 Thread Olden Pieterse

Yep you can !
Do a ip helper address x.x.x.x on that interface and check which udp ports
you want to forward . There is eight and by default they are all on .

so its
int ethernet 0
ip adress x.x.x.x y.y.y.y
ip helper-address x.x.x.x
you can add this line ... ip forward-protocol udp

Port numbers are as follow :
tftp69
dns553
time37
netbios name service137
netbios datagram service 138
bootp server67
bootp client68
tacacs49

A good idea would be to add only the ones you need .

Hope it helps

Then I typed term mon . Usually thats only when you telnet hey ? And the

RE: what i just saw...

2000-07-29 Thread Olden Pieterse

Excellent explanation Chuck !!
I've never thought of it that way .
I forgot (using the frame relay example) that the total of all the lines'
CIR's together should be equal to the line speed at your primary interface .
for example 16k---}
16k---}serial0(64k)(((Router))
---16k---}
---16k---}

But now I have a serial line (hdlc) with a isdn as backup . Now if the
serial goes down then the isdn should kick in . Why would that bandwidth 8
then still be in there ? If the serial comes up again then the isdn goes
down .
I mean you can either use the dial backup command or floating static or
something like that . In essence , the cost (routerwise to determine the
path) factor is sorted out .
I agree that if there is money involved and you pay for the amount of data
that flows , its another story .
But under perfectly normal circumstances why would one do that ?
If you configure an isdn line and you do the bandwidth 8 statement , do you
only use 8k of that whole 64k line ? Or do you use streams of 8k on that 64k
line ?

I'm asking because I am not sure . Thanx for the patience !

Cheers

Let's look at what is happening

With frame relay, you have a port speed and a committed information rate. If
the port speed is 128K, and the CIR is 16K, the following will happen when
you transmit data.

1) data will pass into the frame relay network at the full port speed.
2) The frame relay cloud ingress router marks all frames in excess of the
CIR as discard eligible.
3) If bandwidth is available, frames travel through the frame relay network
at whatever speed that link is provisioned for. If not, the frames are
dropped.

Several routing protocols - i.e. OSPF, EIGRP, IGRP - use "cost" as part of
the means of path determination. From a design standpoint one might have a
reason or two for preferring some paths over others. Let's say that I have
some servers in a co-location facility, and the co-lo charges for data
passed into and out of that facility, based upon fee plus charge for data
over a certain threshold on the line. I have my primary path in. I want all
traffic to use that path. But I want a backup path in case the primary
fails. My primary is frame relay with a port speed of 1.54 and a CIR of
500K. My backup is a frame relay with a port speed of 1.54 but a CIR of 0.
If the router sees two paths, both costing the same (using default settings,
it's 64 for OSPF, isn't it?) Depending upon the routing protocol, I could
end up sending traffic over the circuit with the 0 CIR and incur substantial
fees. So I use the bandwidth command to influence the router to prefer the
primary path over the secondary.

I'm sure there are many other situations in which one might want to do
similar things.

HTH

Chuck

2000-07-29 Thread Olden Pieterse

Hi there

Ive seen some of my fellow engineers put : bandwidth 8 : statement in a
config on a 64k isdn line we used for dial on demand .
As far as I know you put the bandwidth equal to the size of your line (56 or
64 etc) .
What does this imply ? Is the datastreams smaller (8k) but still utilizing
the whole 64k or is it wasted space (which I cannot think why you would want
to waste bandwidth ?

waiting in anticipation

RE: Switch Limitations?

2000-07-20 Thread Olden Pieterse

Hi there Felice
On the late collisions... make sure your switch port that is connected to
the hub is on half duplex and that they are the same speed .
What is on the network (devicewise ) that create your crazy protocols ? Some
IBM , AS400's that use SNA & so on .
As long as unnecessary protocols dont bog your network down you're fine ,
but the more unneccessary stuff you remove the better (it helps when you
have to put on your troubleshooting hat )

Hope some of it helps !

Hey all,

I have two routers in OSPF Area 0 that have ISDN backup connections from one
to the other.

The ISDN config is working great. When the primary FR link goes down, the
ISDN kicks in instantly and it dies when the primary link goes back up. My
dilemma is that even though the primary FR link is up, the ISDN link goes up
every few minutes.

I've configured EIGRP DDR scenarios and had to use Access-list to control
EIGRP traffic over the BRI interface. Is it the same with OSPF? What can be
causing the ISDN BRI to go up every few minutes?

The routers are currently running:
OSPF
IP
Frame Relay
And nothing else!

Olden,

A couple of things to try before opening a TAC case:

1. show modules, is the module recognized
2. show test , what are the results, any failures
3. reseat the module, what are the console messages during this reseat
4. if all are still failures, verfiry a different slot in the chasis

Hi there

I dont see any routing statements i.e router rip , network 10.0.0.0 ,network
10.0.10.0 etc

Your router needs a 'map' to show it how it can pass network info from one
segment to another .
Dont worry about asking so called stupid questions because your 'stupid'
questions teaches a lot of people out there whom you dont know .

Hope it helps

I feel pretty stupid - I've just passed the CCNA this past Friday
and am trying to get a simple 4000M 10baseT router to pass
traffic from one segment to another. I just got this router to play
with - yes, I passed the CCNA with out any real hands-on...(I know,
I know - let the paper-cert debates begin...*grin*)anyway, here
is a copy of an extended ping:

Internal1#ping
Protocol [ip]:
Target IP address: 10.0.0.115
Repeat count [5]:
Datagram size [100]:
Timeout in seconds [2]:
Extended commands [n]: y
Source address or interface: 10.0.10.1
Type of service [0]:
Set DF bit in IP header? [no]:
Validate reply data? [no]:

Sweep range of sizes [n]:
Type escape sequence to abort.
Sending 5, 100-byte ICMP Echos to 10.0.0.115, timeout is 2 seconds:

Success rate is 0 percent (0/5)

I don't understand why I can't ping an address on my 10.0.0.0 segment
from the 10.0.10.1 interface of my router I'm embarrassed to
be asking this because I fear the answer is so simple, but then again
I was taught to never be afraid to ask even stupid questions ;-)

So, here's my config and I would appreciate any words of wisdom.

T1 (not E1). For some reason, controller is up, but
when I dial the number, it gives busy signal. My
question is: If a switch is Europe type, can it
support T1?

Thanks in advance.

Olden,

You might want to be more specific with your questions in the future,
otherwise you will get answers like this. Once you read the autoinstall
procedures, you should understand why I can't give you a more specific
answer.

18 on serial 1
Basically the aim is to get from one Motorola side through the Cisco to the
other Motorola side .It'll be nice if you can have 16 & 18 on the one
Motorola to go through to ultimately end up on the other Motorola side .

Hope it helps !

Yes you can have multiple frame-relay route statements on the same
interface.

Can you tell me which DLCIs you want to announce and on which interface. As
far as i can understand you want to announce DLCI 16 on serial0 and DLCI 18
on serial1. Correct me if i am wrong .

Subject: Cisco 3640 router freezing up
Importance: High

Good day all,

I have another issue here. I have a 3640 router at a client site which is
running IOS 12.09 desktop plus. The routing process is EIGRP - for IP and
IPX. The problem I have is that this router is occassionally freezing up. It
becomes totally unmanageable, but a reboot will fix this. Our monitoring
station (HP Openview) goes totally red. I heard from someone a while back
that this may be because of the IPX EIGRP process, but find this hard to
believe as a similar router has no problems. I am not able to get any
information from the router at the time of crash.

I think the hardware may be suspect. Any idea's??

Solution - Encapsulation problems Cisco/Motorola - Frame Relay

2000-07-03 Thread Olden Pieterse

Hi there

My colleague has solved the problem and I though to let you guys & gals
know.
Cisco-(FR Cloud)-Motorola
Every minute or so you'll see an error message on the Motorola ( cdp
discovery going out from the Cisco)
If everything works ok on both sides (ping both & the works ) , but you get
encapsulation error messages on the Motorola , then disable cdp on the Cisco
side . ( no cdp enable)

Thx for everybody's input !

RE: Serial0 is up, line protocol is down!

2000-06-28 Thread Olden Pieterse

The line protocol down means that the other end are not sending keepalives .
So yes its datalink (correct me if I am wrong ).
If you are using back to back is there clocking on your dce side ( do a show
control serial 0 )
look for dce .
If not check that your NTU (clocking device is plugged in)
See that your addressing is correct on both sides .

So in short you should have a dce---dte scene
and there should be clocking on the dce side.
and make sure your addressing is ok !

Hope it helps !

RE: Review of Cisco Aironet

2000-06-27 Thread Olden Pieterse

Hi there

I have worked with these beasts before Cisco decided to buy up the whole
kaboodle (Aironet)
They work well as long as you dont have interference concerning line of
sight .
Sometimes they can really get full of sh.. nonsense in a bridge type
environment .
They have to be line of sight and being outdoors & all they can be bastards
to work with .
Metal interferences & so on is not good !!
They work in fog & mist as far as I know , but not when a metal object
ccross/obscure the view/line of sight .
Sitting on top of a Silo's roof in a harbour with a 10 inch kerb with a wind
blowing there really want to make you get of there a.s.a.p

I believe we used 2Meg throughput there . They can work quite a distance .
Ours is in the vicinity of about 4 to 5 kms I think ( thats 3miles = 4.8
kms)

Hope it helps a bit
Cheers

Is anyone using/deployed Cisco's WLAN solution (Aironet)? Good Points and
bad ones. Any other WLAN solution advice appreciated (Lucent, Breezecom). Do
you get a true 11Mbs? What's the range of that 11Mbs? Ect, ect. Thanks in
advance.

RE: Cisco Internetworking with Microsoft

2000-06-25 Thread Olden Pieterse

I think you have hammered the nail on the head with your assumption.
Trust relatioships !
You have a domain A---> domain B scenario on the one hand and a
single domA >domB
<--
on the other hand .
Check it out .
You can ping all across the show cant you ?
Your DHCP & wins work ok ?
Check whats different between your two domain PDC's

Good luck

This is a little network problem, but I can not make it work.
There are two different subnets, each one with a cisco router running
only
IP. Between them, there is a point to point serial connection. The IP
connectivity between the two networks is OK.
In each network, there is a NT server (each one with a different domain
name), some NT workstations, and Win95/98 wkts..
In each network, the NT server is configured with WINS service and
local
DHCP service.
In one network, the users are working in a Domain, and in the other
network, users are working only in a Workgroup (without login in the
Domain).
>From the first network (users in Domain), I can not browse the workstation
of
the other side. From the second network (users in a Workgroup), I can browse
the
workstations of the other site using the Network Neighborhood..
I want to enable all the PCs (from both networks) to browse all the PCs
from both networks (using the Network Neighborhood) without changing too
much my
topology (ie. estabilishing domain trust relationships).. Does anyone have
an
ideia about this problem?

Tks and best rgds.

It would help if you were to post a config.

Do you have NTP set on your router? Or at least is the router clock set so
that it's time matches local time more or less?

Are you trying to block certain activities / certain ports? Or do you just
have a blanket deny in your access list?

There are plenty of examples on CCO. I'm sure they work.

RE: Need Immediate Help with fLASH

2000-05-31 Thread Olden Pieterse

Check your bootproms
Swop them out with ones you know is working 100%
These upgrades can be a real headache (to say the very very least)

If you swop out the bootproms and and its still stubborn , you might have to
send the motherboard for repairs .
Alternatively build the flash on another machine (if you can) and transplant
everything back to your router in question .
