The Catalyst 4000 series has the ability to perform
L3 switching/routing! See the link below for details!

I know that you can create VLAN or enable a port from CWI software inside
the CAT4000. Is it possible to configure layer3 routing (if you have the
module SUP3) from the CWI of the CAT4000? Because my customer doesnt want
to
buy CiscoWorks2000 for only one switch.

I am looking for a sample config using 2 2500 routers back to back e0/e0
tunneling,
so that the 4 serial interfaces can be configured as one (4 port)frame relay
switch.

any one know where i can find it.

But I am not sure about the PIN configuration of the connector. Is that
middle two pins , pin 4 and pin 5 like normal phone wire.

RE: OT : Tacacs+ / Linux [7:32661]

Here's a couple of links I used to get Tacacs+ up and running
on a Redhat v7.2 box.

http://stiwww.epfl.ch/tacacs/u_g_F404.html

Link on CCO

http://www.cisco.com/warp/public/480/tacplus.shtml

Also be advised that since it appears you installed using the .rpm
file, it probably installed a copy of the User's Guide on your system,
although that file might be an older version. On Redhat 7.2 it's in the
usr/share/doc/tac_plus-F4.0.3.alpha directory!

A newbie question regarding Tacacs+ on Linux box for home lab.

I download the Tacacs+ v.9 from http://www.gazi.ed.tr/tacacs.

Installed it successfully (I believe) as per instruction from the site,
since I got a output of :
tac_plus-F4.0.3.alpha-9
when I issue a query : rpm -q tac_plus

How can I tell if Tacacs+ is up and running even before I configure a router
to test it ? Is Tacacs+ running as a service (daemon) whenever the Linux box
boots up ? I cannot get answer after reading the docs from the same site.

Can any group member point me to some resources concerning running Tacacs+
on Linux ?

I hope I'm not confusing the issue here.

I plugged your config into my pod, with a few minor changes
(interface types used). I used serials thorughout the net, where
you used some ethernet interfaces, with the exception of RouterD
where I used a loopback interface instead of the ethernet you used!

Here's my config and RouterA's routing table.

Hi Andrew,

Thank you for you willingness to assist.

Someone in the group suggested that a routing loop may exists (i.e,
the path Router A uses to get to network 3 is via B via C via D to
network 3). Although this may explain the extra cost factor of 64,
this
is not what happens as can be seen from the following two traceroute
outputs:

RouterAtraceroute 192.168.3.1
Tracing the route to 192.168.3.1
  1 192.168.1.1 4 msec 4 msec 4 msec
  2 192.168.2.2 8 msec 8 msec *

RouterAtraceroute 192.168.3.2
Tracing the route to 192.168.3.2
  1 192.168.1.1 4 msec 4 msec 4 msec
  2 192.168.2.2 8 msec 4 msec 4 msec
  3 192.168.3.2 8 msec 8 msec *

As you can see the optimal path is used everytime (i.e. Router A to B
to C to network 3).

When examining the Link-State Databases of the routers in Area 0,
network 3 has a metric of 128 (and not 64 as would have been
expected).
Similarly network 1 has a cost of 2 (and not 1). Why is the costs of
these two summary routes doubled?.

Kind Regards

Hi Andrew,

Thank you for you willingness to assist.

Someone in the group suggested that a routing loop may exists (i.e,
the path Router A uses to get to network 3 is via B via C via D to
network 3). Although this may explain the extra cost factor of 64, this
is not what happens as can be seen from the following two traceroute
outputs:

RouterAtraceroute 192.168.3.1
Tracing the route to 192.168.3.1
  1 192.168.1.1 4 msec 4 msec 4 msec
  2 192.168.2.2 8 msec 8 msec *

RouterAtraceroute 192.168.3.2
Tracing the route to 192.168.3.2
  1 192.168.1.1 4 msec 4 msec 4 msec
  2 192.168.2.2 8 msec 4 msec 4 msec
  3 192.168.3.2 8 msec 8 msec *

As you can see the optimal path is used everytime (i.e. Router A to B
to C to network 3).

When examining the Link-State Databases of the routers in Area 0,
network 3 has a metric of 128 (and not 64 as would have been expected).
Similarly network 1 has a cost of 2 (and not 1). Why is the costs of
these two summary routes doubled?.

Kind Regards

Hi Everybody

This is the third time that I am posting this message to this

I have a problem understanding how costs are calculated for OSPF

This is the internetwork diagram (with 4 routers A,B,C D):

  netw 1 netw 2 netw 3netw 4
[ A ][ B ][ C ]-[ D ]-|
  cost 1 cost 4 cost 64 cost 16

Actually the WIC-1T can be used in asynchronous mode on the
1600 and 1700 series platforms!

The command you're looking for is physical-layer async

In all other platforms, it operates in sychronous mode only.

Ditto, Chuck!

I'll have to agree with your observations! 19 days total from
order submission to receipt of book! Ouch

But I guess I should feel fortunate since the projected shipping
arrival dates could have netted me the book anywhere from 12 to 34
from my actual order submission! 34 daysamazing!

But the price was rightAnd I could afford to wait! God knows I'm
not lacking around here for a book to read.

But still, if I want it fast, Bookpool has always worked for me!

Based on my first experience with this means of purchasing books, I have the
following observations:

1) price is great

2) service / delivery sucks

Don't be in a hurry when you use this subsidiary of e-bay. from the postmark
to my hands was about a week, but the postmark is two weeks after I placed
the order and the order was accepted.

you have no choice for shipping. media mail ( media is apparently Eskimo
for dog sled via the north pole ) is the only option.

reading the site, I see that comments from other customers are all over the
board. about equal good and bad. the bad all revolve around turnaround time.

I chose half.com because they claimed to have the book in stock at the time
I was ordering. Other places stated no availability. I suspect a part of the
problem with the particular book I ordered is that is it is newly released,
and the seller ( some small shop in New Jersey ) accepted my bid thinking
they could get the book through distribution and found they had to wait for
the release.

for my money, bookpool is still the way to go.

RE: RE: OSPF and The Disappearing Neighbor Statement [7:31656]

2002-01-13 Thread Stefan Dozier

John, I've been following your thread and think I found a possible answer
to your question on why the neighbor statement gets ignored when entered
on spoke routers!

In the OSPF Desig Guide Section 1 under Adjacencies on Non-Broadcast
Multi-Access (NBMA) Networks the next to last statement in the paragraph
gives us a clue.

The neighbor command applies to routers with a potential of being DRs or
BDRs
(interface priority not equal to 0).

So to test that theory, I changed the priority on one of my spokes to 1
from 0 and viola, it takes the neighbor statement just fine. Prior to
changing the interface priority I could enter the neighbor statement under
the OSPF process, but it didn't show up in the config.

Spoke Router:

interface Serial0
 ip address 192.1.1.1 255.255.255.0
 no ip directed-broadcast
 encapsulation frame-relay IETF
 logging event subif-link-status
 logging event dlci-status-change
 frame-relay map ip 192.1.1.2 100 broadcast
 frame-relay map ip 192.1.1.3 100 broadcast
 frame-relay lmi-type ansi
!
router ospf 64
 network 192.1.1.0 0.0.0.255 area 0
 neighbor 192.1.1.2

Hub Router:

interface Serial0
 ip address 192.1.1.2 255.255.255.0
 encapsulation frame-relay IETF
 frame-relay map ip 192.1.1.1 100 broadcast
 frame-relay map ip 192.1.1.3 200 broadcast
 frame-relay lmi-type ansi
!
router ospf 64
 log-adjacency-changes
 network 2.2.2.2 0.0.0.0 area 0
 network 192.1.1.0 0.0.0.255 area 0
 neighbor 192.1.1.3
neighbor 192.1.1.1 priority 1 I thought you only need the neighbor
statement on one side of
the
 connection?

Once a router accepts the hello, adjacencies are formed with
information
from the hello via unicast communication from that point
forward.

Sort of like if I shout over a hill, Hey Routerman are you
there, this
 is
Jim. Then you would respond back to me by name.

I was able to reproduce your exact scenario. I had a hub
with two
 spokes
and the neighbor statements only appeared on the hub. This is
very
interesting and I'm not sure what the reason behind it is. I
am glad
 that
this was brought up, because I would love to get to the
bottom of this
situation. I'll keep you posted John Neiberger wrote in

The network statement definitely was there, but the
neighbor
statements would only appear on the hub router.
Interestingly, I just

saw a sample configuration similar to this on CCO and they
only had
the neighbor statement on one router, not both. I think as
long as
one router has a neighbor statement configured, the
adjacency will
form assuming all other things being equal (network type,
etc.)

The adjacencies formed but I had to cycle the interfaces to
get things
started. Even if the neighbor statement is only required
on one
 side,
I still don't understand why the router wouldn't let me add
it. The
adjacencies would eventually form, however, and routing
occurred
  exactly as I expected it.

I did notice a minor issue with the neighbor statements on
the hub. I

had three of them, and one of them inserted 'priority 1' at
the end,
yet the other two remained as I entered them.

   Router Man 1/11/02 3:08:03 PM
The only time that the neighbor statement will not show
up in the
running-config, is if you do not have a network statement
under the
router ospf process. I am doubting that the neighbors
formed an
adjacency without the neigbor or network statements showing
up under
  the ospf config.
If the adjacency was actually formed, then it must be a bug.

Another thing that I have noticed is than when trying to
use the
neighbor statement to set the priority, neighbor 1.1.1.1
priority
  255 the priority
will change to something other than what I set it too. It
took me a
  while
to figure this one out. The problem is that I have to
have matching
  ip
ospf priority 255 statements under the interfaces running
ospf .

He knew that to do this he must explicitly add neighbor

  or
   adjacencies would not form.

He logs into the hub router and types in his three

All seems well. It's still too hot, but it's a dry heat.

He now logs into one of the spoke routers and types in
his neighbor

What would be the least expensive router I could get used on e-bay that

Thanks for the responses so far. I still don't understand the
purpose of the ppp chap hostname command under the interface
config.

Using this command, I am now able to get a PPP link up. But I must
do the following:

rtr-a config:

username rtr-b

int serial 0
encap ppp
ppp chap hostname rtr-a

rtr-b config:

username rtr-a

int serial 0
encap ppp
ppp chap hostname rtr-b

That is, I must define the hostnames to be *different* on each
side, and then define the corresponding global username to match the
remote hostname on each side of the link. Thus, the interface
ppp chap hostname command doesn't appaear to simplify the CHAP
config. This seems to defeat the purpose of this command as suposedly
it's used to simplify the CHAP config so that the same hostname can be
used on multiple routers. Or so its stated in the ICRC book (page 373).

So, I'm not really sure what benefit there is for this command,
as it doesn't seem to simplify the config.

But I'm sure I'm missing something... :-)

Thanks for any more info/comments.

Framesaver CSU Cable Question ? [7:31427]

2002-01-09 Thread Stefan Dozier

I just picked up a Paradyne 9120 Framsaver CSU and while researching
the cable I need to connect to a router I came across a possible
alternate cable I wasn't aware of.

The CSU came with a v.35 adapter (I was actually expecting a
pigtail) but the adapter will work just fine, so I know that
the CAB-V35MT MALE DTE V35 10 FT cable is the one I would
normally use with the adapter.

What I wasn't aware of is the CAB-530MT MALE DTE RS-530 10 FT cable
which appears to allow me to connect directly to the CSU's 25 pin
Port#1 or Port#2 connection and forego the v.35 adapter!

Can anyone confirm my suspicions that the CAB-530MT will work for
this application? The way I figure, the more pieces I can eliminate,
the easier it becomes to troubleshoot if problems arise!

RE: Framesaver CSU Cable Question ? [7:31427]

2002-01-09 Thread Stefan Dozier

Ole

I have the pdf Technical reference document from Paradyne's website
available and it indicates that the interface is a EIA-530a.

From the tech reference:

EIA-530A Port 1 or 2 Interface Cable
The following table shows the EIA-530A circuit and pin assignments that are
supported for a port connector/interface ( Port 1 or Port 2).

I'm making the assumption that EIA-530 and RS-530 are one in the
same...but you know what happens when one assumes :-)

Anyway I'm relatively sure that the CAB-530MT cable will work, but
I was hoping for solid confirmation from someone out there actually
using the CAB-530MT in lieu of the CAB-V35MT/Adapter or pigtail
cable, either in a lab environment or in production.

BTW: RS-323 ??? Is that a RS-232 mistype!

RE: PPP negotiaiton problem [7:30767]

2002-01-04 Thread Stefan Dozier

Well, those were my symptons..exactly!

A couple of months ago I was doing ddr configs using modems connected
via the aux ports and everything thing worked fine at 38400. I still
had the configs saved, so I know they worked!

When I revisited ddr during the thanksgiving holidays, using the same
configs I had working before, the connection(s) would establish, but I
couldn't any data (read: icmp packets or pings)to pass at 38400. Debugs
indicated that the dialer was connecting but the PPP Authentication
process was having problems! Actually, the exact same debug symptons you
posted!

What made me think to drop the modem speed down to 9600, remains a
mystery, but I did and it worked! I finished my tasks and I didn't
really think about it any more. The reason: I don't have usr modems,
I have some old Supras with no documentation, and with all the AT
commands I punched in the modems from memory, (knowledge or forgotten
knowledge from my bbs days) I felt fortunate to have them working at 9600.
Besides packet speed doesn't matter hear at home anyway as long as I
can get them across the link, when needed! So I moved on to other
scenarios!

So when your message came across, and you didn't find a solution I
figured it was worth a shot to drop the line speed and see if it
was the same problem I experienced. So it surprised me when you replied
that it worked and it piqued my interest!

The only thing I know for a fact that I changed, (besides me changing
the modem settings) was between the time I had them working at 38400
and not being able to get them working at 38400 was.
I upgraded IOS from 12.0 to 12.1. I noticed you're running 12.1.

So today I downgraded the IOS to 12.0(20) and viola...
They work fine at 38400 using 12.0. Went back to 12.1 with the same
configs I just had working at 38400 and with IOS 12.1 I have to drop
the aux line speed to 9600 to get them to work! A buglet...possibly!

So try downgrading the IOS and see if they start to work at 38400, again!

2002-01-03 Thread Stefan Dozier

Please post replies to the list! That way you can benefit from
the wide ranging knowledge and wisdom of the groupstudy collective!

As to your observation: Not really sure what's going on!

You could double check just to make sure that only the ports
you're looking to monitor are enabled!

Also I'll throw this out there and maybe someone else can
comment or correct me if I'm way out in left field.

I seem to remember in one the switch models (maybe the 2900XL's)
where the port monitor command actually monitors all ports
belonging to the same vlan as the monitor port. Not sure if the
1900's are doing something similar or not!

Hello Group Members,

I've been reading posts on GroupStudy for about a year and wanted to
introduce myself.

I just passed the CIT and completed my CCNP!!!

I will now start the long learning process for the CCIE. I'm located in
Pittsburgh, PA if anyone wants to start a study group.

What I find the most ironic is that the more I learn, the more I realize I
don't know know that much.

Anyway, with the CCNP, I feel that I may be able to add to some discussions,
but will definitely be able to learn from others.

Thanks,

KC

Excellent advice. He sent the same question to my private unicast address
and I ignored it. ;-) But I will answer questions to the collective.

I have also run into surprising results with port monitoring on a 1900. I
don't always see all the traffic I expect to see. I think we discussed this
before and it might be in the archives.

I discovered that some Cisco switches disable the forwarding of unknown
(flooded) unicast traffic and unregistered multicast traffic to the monitor
port. The goal is to protect the network from problems associated with this
traffic exiting an additional port. Check to see if the 1900 switch
automatically added the port block unicast and port block multicast
commands to the monitor port. This can make troubleshooting difficult.

I don't think you can get it not to do this. The workaround is to use a
higher-end switch.

Priscilla

RE: to set the interval in ' show interface' [7:29981]

2001-12-23 Thread Stefan Dozier

Here's the command:

R5-2511(config-if)#load-interval ?
Load interval delay in seconds

If you're applying this in a lab environment and are just curious
about how the numbers will look with different intervals, go for
it. If you're actually trying to accomplish something meaningful
by changing the intervals, I would definitely consider Howard's
questions and comments below!

Hi ,
I remember someone from here saying we can set the interval from the load
to a
shorter time instead of the 5 minutes.

#show interface ...

Tks

I vaguely remember that there is a setting to do this, put in after
customer demands and against the recommendations of pretty much
everyone in routing engineering.

What problem are you trying to solve with a shorter interval? How
would the results of the statistics change anything you are doing?

Hypothetically, if you used the shortest possible interval, that of
one instruction time, the utilization would either be 0% (the CPU is
idle) or 100% (the CPU is doing something). The five-minute weighted
moving average represents experience for spotting trends beyond
instantaneous peaks.

RE: Redistribution Question [7:28374]

2001-12-07 Thread Stefan Dozier

Well since I need the redistribution practice, figured
I'd plug your config into my pod and see if I could figure
out what gives!

First thing I noticed...and it may just be a typo or dyslexia
(it's an affliction I experience often (smile))if you didn't
cut and paste your configs.
From your post...

A is connected to B with 10.1.1.100 / 24 - Serial 0

B is connected to A with 10.1.1.1 / 24 - Serial 0
B is connected to C with 192.168.1.17 /28 - Serial 1

doesn't coincide with your posted configs

hostname RouterA
!

Subject: Redistribution Question [7:28374]

I need some help on a Redistribution question:

I have setup 4 routers:

Router A - Router B - Router C - Router D

A, B C are running OSPF, and C D are running IGRP - I'm trying to
redistribute between OSPF IGRP routes:

A is connected to B with 10.1.1.100 / 24 - Serial 0

B is connected to A with 10.1.1.1 / 24 - Serial 0
B is connected to C with 192.168.1.17 /28 - Serial 1

C is connected to B with 192.168.1.18 / 28 - Serial 0
C is connected to D with 192.168.2.49 / 28 - Serial 1

D is connected to C with 192.168.2.50 / 28 - Serial 0

However, I could only ping from D to A ( vice versa), but I couldn't ping
from B to D, or D to B
N.B: D to C (and vice versa) is fine as they are directly connected

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance,

Hunt Lee

Sorry for the off-topic post, but...

If I have the MAC address of a device and I want to know which port on a Cat
5505 it's plugged into, how I can I find that out? I assume it's a command
on the switch, but what is it?

Thanks,

RE: Can someone tell me what this spoofing below means? [7:28101]

2001-12-04 Thread Stefan Dozier

Think of the definition of spoof - deception, lying, hoaxing, etc...etc...

Now to quote from the CiscoPress CIT book, pgs 495-496.

What spooofing does is lie to Layer 3 DDR so that a routing entry
will be maintained in the router. Having this routing entry enables
DDR to wake and trigger a call to the ISDN network when user traffic
requires the connection.

Notes of interest:

Line protocol is up (spoofing) is D channel information that the
interface alleges to be up.

Spoofing does not necessarily mean the the D channel is up. In fact,
there may be no line on the interface.

That means changing the escape character of the device being controlled by
the termserv. What if you have several devices on the termserv.

Nothing a little foresight and a couple of cut paste keystrokes or
mouse clicks couldn't cure...

It is better to change the escape character of the termserv itself and
leave
everything else as default.

I won't argue that point, as I'm sure you could do it several different
ways!

And obviously you can't have line protocol in an up state

A cable-less serial interface? It's called a loopback interface. ;-)
Which makes me wonder why the original poster was attempting this in the
first place.

Is there some functionality that he/she desires to get from a serial
interface that is up/up without a cable that he/she couldn't get from a
loopback interface?

 MADMAN 11/29/01 12:39:00 PM
To be honest I have never tried such a thing but I thought it made
sense that if I enabled loopback the interface should come up. I now
tried reenabling keepalives and the interface is still up but it shows
itself to be in the looped state:

C7507MIX#sh int ser 4/1/3
Serial4/1/3 is up, line protocol is up (looped)

Which makes sense as it's seeing it's own keepalive packets come back
via the loop.

I can't do this on a 2500 either but I can't tell you why, any Cisco
hardware engineers out there??

oh well it's pretty much acedemic anyway, cableless serial
interfaces
are about as useful as a three legged horse.

Try this

On line console 0 add escape 27; when you have a ping or traceroute or
something you want to break out of, press the [ESCAPE] key.

BTW: I found this while perusing through the archives!

Does anyone know an escape sequence other than Ctl-Shift-6(x) to use while

Say I need to stop an unsuccessful traceroute... but when I do
Ctl-Shift-6(x) it takes me back to my Term server.

As a correction to my last post, Ali is absolutely correct!

What was I thinking.

Even if the DCD (carrier detect) is up, by virtue of a cable
inserted in one side, if there's no connectivity on the other
end of the cable, the interface is still going to show down/down!

It is correct, but according to my knowledge, it will still show down/down
even the cable is attached. The only way to bring it to up/up if other side
is also connected along with the encapuslation and other parameters. It is
different then Ethernet where the physical port will go up as soon as the
cable is detected.

Tom,
I don't think you can!!
HDLC is the default, and requires cable attached in order for the router to
show up. There is no way to simulate as far as I am aware.

Having said that, someone will prove me wrong no doubt.

Latest Doc CD ??? [7:27520]

2001-11-27 Thread Stefan Dozier

Are the latest shipping Doc CD's using the same format as the website
(dropdown menus) or are they still shipping the old website format?
My CD resources ran dry so I haven't seen an updated CD in quite
some time, but since CCD Online is always available, it's all good!

But I realize at some point I have to ween myself off the online site
and get used to the Doc CD, and the sooner I get started learning how
to get around the CD, the better off I'll be. Especially if it's still
using the old format.

I must share your superstition. I always filled out the survey as if I was
doing a career change and didn't know squat about networking even though
I've got numerous certs and have hands-on experience. I've heard that the
grading of an exam is somewhat based on your answers to this survey. So, I
don't think that the questions would be more difficult, just possibly the
grading. Whether it's true or why they would do this, I don't know. It's
just an interesting bit of information I heard about and decided that it's
better to be safe than sorry!

Is it just me and my superstitions, or does any one else feel that the

For all those people who are starting CCNP, I have some advice for
 you.
Dont
be discouraged by all the people telling you they got a 990 on every
exam. That was then, and this is now. I new price of 125 (Nov 11th)
for test indicates that things have changed very much. I say this
because Cisco states the 125 is for the cost of changing the exams. I
 have just heard
from
friends that took it and that alot of their friends are failing. I
have failed CCNP Routing as well just recently.

The number of CCNPs has increased this year, by 100% since the
following year, I think that trend is coming to a screaching halt.

How to study, it should be common sense, which i dont have much of :)
Print
out the study guideline from Cisco, and know everything they mention
forwards and backwards. Obviously OSPF, BGP. If you have any study
guides, dont really put much stock in them there not worth 2c anymore.
I suggest exam cram for a basic idea of what its about, and cisco
 press to look up
the
things that are hard to understand. And maybe sybex if you want to
 read
the
entire book :) I think some of the questions on Boson go overboard,
 but
that
might be what you need. I guess it cant hurt to know too much. Boson
 is
now
only good for learning what type of questions are on the exam, not THE
actual questions on the exam anymore.

RE: Clockrate vs Bandwidth [7:26640]

2001-11-18 Thread Stefan Dozier

Hi All,

As I know that when you connect two routers with back-to-back cable and one
of
the routers has to set the clockrate to be the DCE end.

Basically, the clockrate is limit the speed of the serial link. And the
bandwidth is only for the routing.

But someone told me that the bandwidth can also limit the speed of the
serial
link. Is it true? And under what situation?

Thanks.

Francis

That someone was misinformed! This is straight from CCO, and I'll
post the actual link, so you can see for yourself.

The bandwidth command sets an informational parameter only; you cannot
adjust the actual bandwidth of an interface with this command.

Here's the linkwatch the word wrap!

RE: Physical-layer async command available in 2501? [7:26594]

AFAIK, the physical-layer async command is only available on the
2500 series routers that have low speed synchronous/asynchronous
capable serial interfaces, i.e. 2520 - 2523. The 2501 only has
high speed synchronous serial capable interfaces, and as such wouldn't

Ummm.. the 1600s also will let you set the physical-layer. I work with over
200 1600s with modems hanging on the serial port with SMDS on the 56K WIC.
This is the standard config plus using IP unnumbered, async default routing
and ppp authentication.

changing the VTP domain does NOT change the revision number

adding a vlan does .. change the rev

i then RESET my system and low and behold...

my rev number is 1

Was this a warm boot or cold boot ?

If it was a warm boot, the documentation seems to support that in
some cases, i.e switch/OS versions, warm boot or clear config all
will not reset the vtp config rev number.

If it was a cold boot (power down/power up) and the config rev number
didn't reset, I'll at a lost, but that wouldn't the first time I've been
dumbfounded by the way something actually works vice the way I believe
or have learned(read) it works. That's what so great about learning
the interworkings of internetworking!

anyone want to give me the command to set vtp rev to 0 ...apart from
deleting all the vlan`s .and i`ll do it and post the responce

steve

I'm not aware of a specific command that will reset the vtp config rev
number, but if there is one, I'm sure someone here will correct me and
educate us all!

I certainly hope so, since I just did the same for a 2620.

Here's a line from sh ver of a 2620 in production.

BTW: what kind of pricing did you find for the 64megs ?

cautious.
No matter whether the switch is client or server, the switch with the
highest revision will override the others. You can't change the VLAN
configuration, but if the revision is already higher it will override any
other switches VLAN config.

Agreed

Another thing which seems a little strange - The CP BCMSN book suggests the
following steps before inserting a new switch into an existing domain(cut
down a little):

1. Issue a Clear Config All
2. Power Cycle the switch to clear the VTP NVRAM
3. Determine the mode of operation and if Server mode is to be used, verify
that the revision is set to zero.

Step one and two seem to be a bit of overkill.

From memory, the revision was set to zero after each change of VTP mode, VTP
domain, and a few other things.

Whoa.I haven't read anywhere that the configuration revision number
gets reset
to zero when changing the switch's VTP mode, VTP Domain name, etc.

In testing that theory, unfortunately I'll have to rely for now on my
trusty 1924 with
the latest enterprise software installed as a testbed, but with continued
discussions
and education afforded by the list, perserverance in the pursuit of the
knowledge
required to obtain the ultimate certification, and my ability to keep a job
that
right now affords me the opportunity reach a higher level of understanding
each and
everyday.one day I'll be in a environment where 55xx and 65xx are
available as
testbeds for scenarios just like this..[can't you just see the envy, Rich].

Anyway, I'm back from la la land now, and my test doesn't indicate that the
config rev
number resets when changing the vtp mode or the vtp doamin name, atleast
not on the
1900 series switches, which I'm well aware are miles apart from the big
boys, 55xx and 65xx
series.

After reading how non-volatile it was, I was
quite surprised how easy it was to reset it, although this could be an image
related thing. Anybody any other experiences? Rich?
Step 3 seems to go against my previous comment that it doesn't matter what
mode the switch is in. Why take more care for Server Mode if Client will
have the same disastrous effect?

Agreed, client mode is just as dangerous as server mode if the config rev
number
is higher and maybe even moreso for the casual implementer who could possibly
surmize that in client mode the switch couldn't perform changes in the VTP
domain.

If we carry on like this we may actually get a topical thread to the same
length as a troll thread or a thread discussing whether piracy is a good or
bad thing. :-]

no, say it ain't so!

I believe the last IOS version that's officially supported the AccessPro's

120-8 Enterprise and haven't experienced any problems. I have loaded

when initially booting, once it booted up, everything ran fine.
To clarify this, I've experienced the same slowness while booting

I have not successfully gotten any 12.1 images to load on my AccessPro.

I also noticed the "ip ospf interface-retry 0" on several interfaces

but I suspect that it appears in the config because the opposite side

After I deleted all the "ip ospf interface-retry 0" entries off the

that network 192.168.104.0 (your 152.1.0.0) is in the routing

I have all the router configs and sh commands as well as the

I'll post it incase it helps although you don't specifically mention you

***

VTP Troubleshooting and Caveats

Below are some common troubleshooting situations for VTP.

How a Recently-Inserted Switch Can Cause Network Problems

In situation, you have a large switched domain, which is all in the same
VTP domain. You want to add one switch in the network.

This switch was previously used in the lab and you enter the "good" VTP
domain name. You configure it as a VTP client, and you connect it to the
rest of the network. Then, you bring up the ISL link to the rest of the
network. In just a few seconds, the whole network is down. What could
have happened?

The configuration revision of the switch you insert was higher than the
configuration revision of the VTP domain. Therefore, your
recently-introduced switch, with almost no configured VLANs, has erased
all VLANs through the VTP domain.

This will happen whether the switch is a VTP client or a VTP server. A
VTP client can erase VLAN information on a VTP server. boldbiggerYou
will know that this has happened when many of the ports in your network
go into inactive state, but continue to be assigned to a non-existing
VLAN.

/bigger/bold

Solution:

Quickly reconfigure all of the VLANs on one of the VTP servers.

I have a catalyst switch and a number of its ports are showing up as
inactive.

The cisco web page does not list inactive as one of the possible values
in

the status field of a show port command, yet there it is

Anyone know what this means?

They were not connected until I assigned them to a VLAN, then they
showed

up as inactive

While doing Lab #13 using a 2521 and three other 2500 series router, I
managed to get the same output, but at the hub router (Router A).

RouterA#sh frame map
Serial0 (up): ip 0.0.0.0 dlci 210(0xD2,0x3420)
  broadcast,
  CISCO, status defined, active
Serial0 (up): ip 0.0.0.0 dlci 200(0xC8,0x3080)
  broadcast,
  CISCO, status defined, active

I believe this happened to me because,

I already had the FrameSwitch and the 2 spoke routers configured, up and
running, and then I powered up the Hub Router and configured it.

***
Explanation: Unfortunately the router I'm using as a hub router is an
AccessPro card stuck in a PC, so it's a bit more difficult to get to and
configure, so I saved it for last. In other words, it's just pure
happenstance that the powerup sequence dictated that I powerup and
configure the Hub router, last. When performing labs from the CCIE Lab
Study guide, I always boot to a clean router, "erase start; reload", skip
the initial setup configuration, paste my basic router configs and then
paste the lab scenerio from the book.

Anyway, once the hub router was powered up, I configured the S0 interface
and the results posted above is what I get when I issue the "sh frame map"
command.

I solved the problem by rebooting the router with S0 configured and saved
to NVRAM and viola, I have a properly working HUB router.

RouterA#sh frame map
Serial0 (up): ip 192.1.1.3 dlci 200(0xC8,0x3080), dynamic,
  broadcast,, status defined, active
Serial0 (up): ip 192.1.1.4 dlci 210(0xD2,0x3420), dynamic,
  broadcast,, status defined, active

But I'm not satisfied that reloading the router is the only way to solve
the problem.

I did some research, and found the "clear frame-relay-inarp" command,

clear frame-relay-inarp Clear inverse ARP entries from the map table

but it doesn't seem to clear the table as advertised, atleast not in the
configuration and IOS version I'm currently running (120-6 IP only). I
haven't gotten around to trying a different version of IOS yet.

Maybe some here can shed some light on why the command doesn't work as
advertised.

Look under the Access Products section for 2500 series routers.

I haven't done Token Ring in years, but I'm putting my home lab together.
Does anybody have any suggestions for a low-cost MAU and some NICS. I don't
mind buying new, I just don't want to spend a lot on old technology. Let me
know your thoughts.
