Looped

2001-02-18 Thread Thomas

Hi All - I am bringing up a frame circuit from a remote site. However, I
couldn't get the line up since it is looped. When I do the "show int s0/0",
I got "Protocol is up, line is down (looped). I checked all the setting and
didn't see any wrong. Can this be a mistake on the ISP side, or something
wrong with my configuration? I am running 12.1 on the Cisco 2600 router.
Any hint woule be appreciated!!!

I had been trying to run eigrp with IOS 11.3 on 2501 but couldn't. I could

I wonder if RouterSim Simulation for Routing and Switching are good? I know

pretty good in compare to the E-trainer lab one. Do "RoutingSim v1.0" and

support instructed labs as described? Thanks for all the info Dave, and the

You can have both of these routers running in HSRP. However, you have to
enable "HSRP Interface Tracking" so that the line will fail-over to the
second router. The command is in this format:

Router(config-if)# standby group-number track type number interface-priority

Old bootstrap verison does not compatible with new IOS

upgrade bootstrap

Hi Group - I just upgraded the bootstrap for my 2501. Whenever I bootup or
reload the router, I got a warnning message:

I wonder if this is OK or there's something wrong? BTW I am running IOS
version 12.0(15). Thanks All.

reload the router, there's a message:

%Sys-4-New-config: IOS 12.0 or later may not be correctly understood

I wonder if this warning message is normal or there's something wrong? I am
running IOS 12.0(15) anyway. Thanks All!

How to check the real rate of the frame relay circuit?

2001-03-14 Thread Thomas

Hi All - I know that we can set the bandwidth on an interface; However, is
there a way to check what the real rate of a frame circuit a router
interface (CIR). Which command should I type? Thanks!

3Com VBridge versus Cisco VLAN

Hi All - I am implementing "routing on a stick" with the Cisco router.
However, we have couple 3com switches on the network. I wonder if the
Vbridge on 3Com is compatiable with the VLAN setting/encapsulations on the
Cisco routers??? Thanks!

I tried it. But it only show the bandwidth statement, which is based on my
setting... I think the bandwidth can be different than the CIR.

Re: Upgrade bootstrap

2001-03-14 Thread Thomas

My 2501 was having a 4.14 bootstrap. When I upgrade this IOS to 12.0, I got
"Illegal keyword - 'classless'". However, my other 2500 router with
bootstrap version 5.2 ran fine with the same IOS version.

Bootstrap upgrade is a hardware upgrade. You can obtain thes ROM chips from
Cisco...

Monitoring Multilink Interfaces

2000-12-01 Thread Thomas

Is there a way to automatically detect when and interface is down when using
multilink to bundle two or more T1 interfaces into one logical group? Is
there a SNMP MIB, that would report a link being down in this situation?

Example if I use the following config and serial 0/1 dropped.

   interface multilink 8
   ip address 192.x.x.x 255.255.0.0

   serial 0/0
   encapsulation ppp
   ppp multilink
   multilink-group 8

   serial 0/1
   encapsulation ppp
   ppp multilink
   multilink-group 8

Thanks

If I have a Cisco 3620 with 1 fast ethernet port, can I implement "routing

use "do1q" enscapsulation. If possible, how should I do it? Thanks in

RIP does not advertise in IGRP - what's wrong?

2001-03-24 Thread Thomas

Hi All - In my network enviroment, I have LANs with 10.x.0.0/16 networks and
WAN with 192.168.10.0/24. I use RIP for LAN and IGRP for WAN. On RIP, I
redistribute IGRP, and vice versa, on IGRP I redistribute RIP. However, I
cannot ping from one LAN to the other LAN. If I put a static route to
specify the next hop, then I can ping the other LAN. Is there a way to have
the network learn all the LAN dynamically, instead of static route? I am
running IOS ver 11.3 on both routers. Here is my configuration:

"Routing on a stick" with Ethernet, not FastEthernet???

2001-03-25 Thread Thomas

Hi All - Is it possible to run "routing on a stick" on an regular ethernet
interface, not fastethernet??? I loaded IOS version 12.1.7 onto the 2611
and I could create subinterface on its ethernet ports. I could also
encapsulate these subinterfaces to 802.1q and assign IP addresses for them.
It seems I am able to do the routing on a stick here. However, when I tried
it on a 2500 router with the same IOS version, I could only create the
subinterface, but the encapsulation. There's no encapsulation command on
the subinterface mode this time. Does this new IOS version not support this
feature on 2500 series? or it allows me to successfully create and
encapsuate subinterface on 2611, but the routing will never work if I plug
in a CAT3500 switch? I am just experiencing if this method is working with
Ethernet interface, because they said version 12.0T supports 802.1q
encapsulation on Ethernet media Thanks All in advance!

Thanks Chad! Is RIPv2 compatiable with RIP? In order words, If I have one
router running RIP and the other running RIPv2, can they still work
together? My concern is convering RIP to RIPv2 so that I can turn off the
"auto-summary" feature.

Make sure you have a up-to-date bootstrap. I got the same problem when I
have bootstrap version 4.14. Upgrade the bootstrap ROM should fix the
problem.

Re: Router problem at remote node

2001-03-26 Thread Thomas

- Make sure you have the correct LMI type at both end (might want to check
with ISP what they lmi type they use on their frame switch).
- Check for the Keepalive
- Check the channel setting on the csu/dsu and verify to configure it
right...

Protocols on frame relay switch

2001-03-30 Thread Thomas

Hi All - I am setting my 2501 as a frame-relay switch. Its 2 serial ports
will be set as DCE for providing clock. Since I am trying to test the
compatiability of between IGRP and EIGRP, does it matter if I don't run any
protocol (such as RIP, IGRP, EIGRP...) on this 2501? Thanks All!

3620 router with the NM-2FE2W card

2001-04-03 Thread Thomas

Hi All - I have a 3620 router and a NM-2FE2W module. What version of IOS
supports this NM-2FE2W on 3620? The router is currently has the standard IP
IOS version installed. If a different IOS version is needed, is it possible
if I place the flash of this 3620 router into a 2600 router and do the IOS
upgrade from there, then put it back to the 3620 once done??? Thanks All!

Re: Password recovery [7:415]

You should press "CTRL" and "Break" key right after the first 2 or 3 line of
text appear on your Hyper Terminal. You should get get a > prompt. At the

o/r 0x2141

Them type "i" at the prompt to initialize the router. This will allow you
to enter the router enable mode to reset the password. Once reset the
password, reload and doing the same thing, but set register to:

0x2102

to boot to the flash.

Frame Relay switching [7:435]

2001-04-12 Thread Thomas

Hi All - I am setting up my 2501 router as a frame-relay switch. I succeed
when setting both of its serial as DCE interfaces. However, I failed to
have one serial acts as a DCE and one acts as a DTE. Is it possible to
specify a switch as a "frame-relay" switch and have one of its serial acting
as a DTE interface (and assign IP address...) ??? Thanks All

Re: Frame Relay switching [7:435]

2001-04-13 Thread Thomas

Thanks All for all the support! I went over all the setting: clockrate on
the DCE interface, cable, keepalive, lmi-type, frame-relay map... and
everything seems to be OK. However, I still got the "INACTIVE" status for
the PVC. Just the make sure you are clear with my senario, here is the
topology:

(DTE)RouterA(DTE)DCE-RouterB-DTE-DCE-RouterC-DCEDTE-
RouterE-DTE

- RouterB is the Frame-Relay switch with clockrate on DCE interface. DLCI #
and bandwitdh is assigned on its DTE interface.
- Router C is also a Frame-Relay switch that map DTEs of RouterB and routerE
(which I had it worked).
- I am trying to map DTE of routerA to DTE of routerB.

You might be questioning why I am setting up it this way... It's because
each of my routers only has 2 serial ports, and that I have a limit number
of crossover cables with different types... Again, Thanks All!

With 8MB of Flash, I would recommend you to ran IOS version 12.0(15),
IP/IPX/AT/DEC. This is the latest version of v12.0. It's only require 8MB
of flash and is a clean version (have the TCP security flaw bug fixed).

Re: Cisco 2621 Aux port [7:1304]

Try this configuration:

line aux 0
 login local
 modem InOut
 modem autoconfigure type usr_courier
 transport input all
 escape-character BREAK
 autoselect ppp
 stopbits 1
 speed 115200
 flowcontrol hardware

I tried the "modem autoconfiguration discoverty" with the U.S. Robotics, but
it didn't work. Also, the "modem" adapter shipped with the 2600 router is
not the correct one. I don't have the part number here. Please go to Cisco

Re: Flash Upgrade Q's [7:1400]

Try these steps:

- Hit "Ctrl + Break" keys while the IOS is booting, you will get a > prompt
and follow as below:
>o/r 0x2141
>i
R2502(boot)>en
R2501(boot)#

Go to the configuration mode and assign the ethernet interface an ip address
that is in the same network with the tftp server. Ping and see if you get
reply from the tftp server, then

R2501(boot)#copy tftp flash

Will ask you for the IP address of the tftp server and the name of the
source file. Also make sure the tftp server application is running. Once
finish ugrading, reload the router and follow the same steps, change the
register configuration to

Re: Etherchannel between 2621 router and 3548 switch [7:2049]

I succeeded configuring the trunking using dot1q encapsulation. However, I
wonder if I can apply "EtherChannel" to the trunk for variable speed and
redundancy. If I have 2 FastEthernet ports configured to be the
EtherChannel, will the subinterfaces I created on one FastEthernet port will
replicate on the other one of the 2621? Because I know I cannot have the
same IP address on diferent interfaces of a router.

Also, try differnt baud rates for your Hyber Terminal. The console port of

Re: Flash Upgrde problem on Cisco 2600 [7:5001]

I tried a blank flash with the 3620 router and got the same problem. I
could not even assign an IP address to the ethernet port so I can download
from tftp the new ios image. I had to use the xmodem using the console
port. It took me like 30 minutes with the 115kbps speed

Re: why can't I change tx and rx speed on 2600 AUX? [7:5171]

2001-05-20 Thread Thomas

Instead of using the "tx" or "rx" commands, try "speed" one. This will set
both the "tx" and "rx" to the speed you choose. Also, the 2600 series AUX
supports up to 115200 bps.

Re: Ram in 2500 series [7:6187]

2001-05-29 Thread Thomas

I just plugged in the Fast Page Mode, 72-pin with true parity and 60ns 16Mb
of memory module. The router could not load the IOS at all. So I think the
speed of the memory is different. I checked Crucial.com and found out that
the memory for 2500 series is using 72-pin Fast page mode with parity.

So according to my memory, the speed of the memory does matter. I just
don't know what is the correct speed? Mine are 60ns and it doesn't work.
Someone knows the specs for this? Thanks!

Control traffic of NetMeeting on routers? [7:6727]

Where to get cheap memory for routers? [7:7168]

2001-06-04 Thread Thomas

Hi All,

I am looking for upgrading our Cisco 3660 router. However, the cost for the
128MB of Cisco memory susprised me. It costs like ... $5000.00 for a piece
of 128MB memory module for Cisco 3660. I wonder if it is OK to plug in a
third party memory module? Has anyone out there do this? Is it safe to do?
Which vendors do you recommend with good quality and cheap (or reasonable)
price? Thanks All!

Wow, it seems that the memory here are so cheap (in compare to Cisco). I'll
probably get memory from here. However, it seems they don't have flash

Re: frame relay DLCIs [7:8611]

2001-06-14 Thread Thomas

It should be OK for a serial interface (encap with frame-relay of course) to
have more than one DLCI. I used to setup a frame-relay switch for my lab
such as a hub-and-poke and had it working. Basically, on the serial
interface of the hub router, you assign multiple DLCIs and map each of them
to that of the poke router. In short, yes, it is normal to have multiple
DLCIs on a single interface. See this link below for more reference:

http://www.cisco.com/warp/public/125/15.html

Good luck!

Routing exam [7:8873]

2001-06-16 Thread Thomas

Hi All,

I just took the Cisco Routing exam 640-503 this morning. I prepared alot
for it and expected to meet lots of senarioes. However, the questions in
the exam confused the hell out of me. Some questions were so vagued and
less infomation that I didn't even know if they were regarding the OSPF or
EIGRP Other than that, all the topics of the exam are covered on the
Cisco Press I used to prepare for this exam, "Building Scalable Cisco
Networks" by Catherine Paquet and Diane Teare. I could say the exam covered
30% on both OSPF and BGP, 20% on EIGRP. The rest was for extended IP scheme
(VLSM, address summarization, redistribution...). I got 75 minutes to
complete 61 questions. The passing score is 690 out of 1000.

Well, thank you all for all the supports you gave me in the past, and good
luck to all who are working on this exam. I now start working my Switching
exam.

Thomas

routing update on IGRP [7:9889]

2001-06-25 Thread Thomas

Hi All,

I wonder how IGRP updating its routing table? Is it using broadcast or
multicast? I am trying to compare the difference between IGRP and EIGRP...
Thanks all in advance!

Administrative Distance [7:9921]

2001-06-25 Thread Thomas

Hi All,

Is it possible to assign the "Administrative Distance" to a static route
(default = 1)? In my network, the default route on a router is learned
through EIGRP (D*EX 0.0.0.0/24) with Administrative Distance of 170. I
would like to add a static route on this router for backup; however, this
static route will be chosen over the default route learned through EIGRP,
since the Administrative Distance for static route is 1. I wonder if it is
possible to raise the Administrative Distance of the static route to be
greater than 170 so that It will only be chosen as a secondary route, in
case the default route is down Thanks All!!!

Re: Administrative Distance [7:9921]

2001-06-25 Thread Thomas

Thank you very much Kevin!!! Let's say I assign a administrative distance
of 180 to a static route (backup route). It should not show up and be used
in "show ip route", given that the default route is active. If I
redistribute this static route (assigned with admin distance of 180) to the
EIGRP, will it still be in passive mode and won't overide the default route
on the EIGRP Autonomous System??? Again, Thanks alot!!!

External MLS-RP for 6500 [7:35472]

2002-02-14 Thread Thomas

Hi All - I have a Catalyst 6500 switch and would like to the MSFC of a
different 6500 as the external MLS-RP for the first 6500. How should I
include it on the first 6500? There's a command for the 5000, but I
couldn't find one on 6500 series. Thanks.
