CAT6500 Flash Memory [7:65746]

2003-03-19 Thread Jeffrey Reed
Im looking for flash memory to upgrade my 6509s from their current 16M
flash cards. I was looking at Viking and Cisco and all they offer is 16M
20M flash cards. Is there something in CATOS that would prevent something
larger like 40M or 64M? I only want to do this once and 20M doesnt seem
large enough to hold router and CATOS firmware at the same time for the next
5 years. Any recommendations on a vendor who makes larger flash cards?

Thanks!

Jeff

the standard for the Cat 6509 that we use is the 24M flash from
Viking or Intel..the larger ATA cards wont work in the 6500.

pcmcia flash memory card for 2501 [7:63741]

2003-02-25 Thread Vic Dmon
Hi, I was told that there is a flash memory pcmcia card for the 2501's which
can be used to upgrade the flash. I wasn't aware that there the 2501's
supported these cards. A search on cisco's website indicates that indeed
there are flash memory cards but what I do not understand is why would it be
needed. Isn't it possible to go into rommon and than copy the image from a
tftp server. Can someone shed some light on the pcmcia cards and what can
they be used for and how much would one cost and what kind of slot is it.
Appreciate the help. Thank you

2003-02-25 Thread Black Jack
Certain models of 2501 have a PCMCIA slot inside the case. I have never
tried to use it, though, and I do not know what it's for. I have always
assumed that it was just a holdover from some older implementation and Cisco
just kept using those boards until the supplies ran out. But I don't know
that for sure.

Don

You may want to take the cover off of the 2500s and have a look at the
front right hand side of the motherboard. There is definitely something
there that looks like a pcmcia slot. I dont know anything more than that,
if it works, how it is used, but it is definitely there :-)

 router. Since this
happened previously, we tried another 2 separate 3640

flash memory worked great. Now this leads me to believe there
 is something
wrong with the motherboard on the router. Strangely enough
 another reboot of
the router and everything comes up with the exception of the

 ring number.
Nothing has changed at all here. Another reload and the flash
 vanishes.
Reinstall the old flash memory and router is operational again.

I know this memory works - used other routers. The ring
 number error has me
totally confused. Upgrades to all other exactly configure sites worked
 perfectly

1720 flash memory issue [7:53919]

2002-09-23 Thread dj

Just installed a 16MByte Viking Flash memory card (Viking p/n CS16MC5V)
in a Cisco 1720 router with the following Boot ROM:
ROM: System Bootstrap, Version 12.0(3)T, RELEASE SOFTWARE (fc1)

The Flash appears to work (I can flash IOS images on them), but the
router only sees the flash as 4 MBytes total, not 16M. I re-seated the
flash card (with power off of course), with no change. The label on the
flash card clearly has the p/n and 16MB on it.

Is the flash bad or does the version of boot ROM in the router not
recognize the larger flash? Where can I check max flash size supported
for specific boot rom versions?? Any input appreciated.

regards,
dj

Hello all,

I have 2 megs of flash on a first generation 4000 with a daughter

memory. From what I understand to upgrade flash memory on this
router I would have to either add Eproms to the current daughter
board or replace the daughter board. Does anyone have any
recommendations on where I can find memory for this router ?

How should I configure the router to see both the memory modules as a single

PIX - Flash Memory Upgrade [7:22209]

2001-10-05 Thread Simionato, Joao

This question is for you PIX Firewall experts.
I have a Cisco PIX Firewall (probably it's a PIX Classic, I'm not sure) and
I would like to upgrade its hardware. I have 8MB of RAM and 2MB of Flash
Memory. I think I won't have problems to upgrade the RAM memory, but in the
case of the Flash Memory I don't know if I can upgrade it because my 2MB of
Flash is composed by 4 chips (EPROMs) each one containing 512KB of Flash
memory, summarizing 2MB. I have no available sockets to insert more chips.
Is it possible to find EPROMS in the market containing at least 2MB for each
chip so that I can upgrade my Flash Memory to 8MB ? My new hardware
configuration will provide me the possibility of upgrading my software from
4.1(5) to new software version 6.0 ?

Thanks in advance,

Joco Paulo

2001-10-05 Thread Ole Drews Jensen

I might be totally off here, because I am NOT a PIX firewall expert (yet).

However, I would like to give it a try anyway.

1) Does your PIX firewall have a model number on the box - 5xx ?

2) Does a show ver show anything about what model it is ?

The thing is, once you know what model it is, you can look it up on the CCO,
and see exactly what memory expansion options you have.

You can look up the product by serial # on SCC (if you have a CCO account).

SCC - Service Contract Center (I think that's what it stand for)
http://www.cisco.com/public/scc/

That might give you an insight as to which PIX you have. As far as
upgrading the flash, you'll need a 16MB flash upgrade card.

Your problem is a older bootrom issue:

1. Call Cisco Customer Support (Not TAC) and tell them that the
bootstrap (ROM: System Bootstrap, Version 5.2(8a)) doesn't meet Y2K
compatability. Pay shipping costs for the new bootroms.

Or

2. Go to Ebay and buy a set of boot roms for $10 plus shipping.
I think the current revision is OM: System Bootstrap, Version
11.0(10c)XB1

I had a friend who had a spare set laying around. I have a 2503 that
had exactly the same problem and the bootstrap upgrade fixed it.

Re: Flash memory issues [7:17561]

2001-09-03 Thread Circusnuts

Theoretically it could be the ROM's, being that the 11.0 (10c)'s upped the
ability to other FLASH manufacturers, as opposed to Intel Panasonic.
Generally- if you have boot ROM's of a lower code (say 10.0), no usable
interfaces appears when trying to run 12.x in the 2500 series. The issue
could very well be a bad FLASH stick...

Flash memory issues [7:17561]

2001-08-28 Thread Robert McIntire

However, it boots to the image stored on the flash. ( 12.04T)

My goal is to upgrade the flash to 16MB so I can run some of the larger
Enterprise images on the router. I know that one method is to install 2 8MB
flash simms. But, when I try to erase the 8MB flash that is currently
installed I get an error that it is read-only. I've also attempted to erase
flash from rommon mode, but the command is not available. I've worked in
Rommon before on other Cisco devices, but am not familiar with the prompt.
I've attempted to set the Boot var to ROM with no luck. Currently I'm net
booting to a 12.2 IOS version, but I really need to configure it to boot to
flash for Enterprise IOS images.

Following is the output of the Show Version command:

Configuration register is 0x2102

At this point I'm just looking for a quick fix to get to 16MB of flash. How
can I tell if the 8MB flash I've got is useable? I see a PCMCIA slot on hte
system board - can this be used to upgrade the flash? I've checked for a
write-protect jumper on the system board, but there isn't one. Is my current
flash going to be reusable in upgrading? Do I need to upgrade boot roms?
These are the questions. If anybody can shed some light on this process, I'd
appreciate the help.

Thanks in advance, Bob McIntire, CCNA

RE: Flash memory issues [7:17561]

2001-08-28 Thread mbaker2507

Robert,

You can set the config register to not boot the IOS. Then you should be
able to erase the flash. From what you show, it may be a bad simm, bad
motherboard (I've seen that a lot with this type of error), or possibly
older bootroms that don't support the simm in there (though it looks like
you have a recent bootrom). Has this been running ok, then started flaking
out, or has it always been this way? I believe netbooting should also allow
you to erase flash, as you won't be locking it during boot/run-from-flash.

Try to follow the instructions on my RouterChief site (see link below). It
should be the same, except that I went from 4MB to 8MB with two 4MB modules.

RE: Flash memory issues [7:17561]

2001-08-28 Thread Mark Monica Baker

Very odd. I suspect bad simms or m/b. Could also be non-cisco approved mem.
Some had a middle chip on them that seemed to do some sort of key/ID
function. Do you have any other known good (preferably Cisco) simms to try?
I don't believe the pc card slot works for reg IOS. I believe it is part of
their diagnostics system. Anyone else know for sure? Have you considered a
Smartnet for it? List is $315, but you should be able to get it for 15% or
more off. Have you tried doing a standard tftp upgrade?

Has this been running ok, then started
flaking
out, or has it always been this way? I believe netbooting should also
allow
you to erase flash, as you won't be locking it during
boot/run-from-flash.

RE: Flash memory issues [7:17561]

2001-08-28 Thread Daniel Cotts

Try playing from router(boot)# mode rather than rommon mode. Change your
config register to 0x2141 to not use the config stored in NVRAM and to not
use the image stored in Flash. Then you can erase the flash.
I can't comment on the startup message. Older bootROMs did not recognize
many manufacturers of Flash.
I did buy flash on eBay that was stated to be Cisco 2500 compatible. In fact
it was pulls from Cisco 5200s. Worked like a charm. I removed the original
Flash and used two sticks of the new. I then used the original in groups of
two on other routers.
New bootROMs are good. I'm not sure how old they have to be to cause
troubles with newer IOS images.

Are you sure it's 2500 compatible flash? No where on the auction do I see

a great price for flash for the 2500 series, it seems about right for

I need to upgrade some of my lab routers to handle 12.0 and 12.1. These
IOS's are resource hogs, so apparently I need to pump up the DRAM and
flash.
So, has anybody tried out some of those non-Cisco approved DRAM and flash
units? Don't worry, none of my routers are going to be used in a
production
environment. But I won't do it if these units completely blow some circuit
 on the router.

Recently did the same - was apprehensive about using non-recommended
Cisco parts, in lab equipment - used Kingston and has not missed a beat
so far.

Yes I have and no there have been no blatant problems. I buy from

In a production environment, al that happens is that your Smartnet is

Re: Reset Flash Memory [7:535]

2001-04-13 Thread John Neiberger

On a 3640 you can upgrade the IOS using tftp but not xmodem. So, you'll
need IP connectivity to a tftp server. Here are the instructions I give
to the people I work with. Make whatever changes are necessary to make
this work for you. These instructions were originally for upgrading the
flash and then loading a new IOS.

Before you even start, make sure the IOS you want to install on the
router exists on the laptop!

1. Open router, remove existing FLASH, insert new FLASH
2. Turn router power on. Send a break signal to get to Rommon mode.
3. Connect laptop to switch/hub and take note of its IP address
4. Set the IP address, subnet mask, and default gateway for the
router:

rommon IP_ADDRESS=xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx(Same subnet as laptop)
rommon IP_SUBNET_MASK=255.255.255.0
rommon DEFAULT_GATEWAY=
rommon TFTP_SERVER=
rommon TFTP_FILE=

5. Begin the TFTP download:

rommon tftpdnld (must be lower case)

Depending on the situation, it may be necessary to set the speed/duplex
setting of the Ethernet port. For this, do the following:

   rommon FE_SPEED_MODE = x

0 = 10 Mbps, half duplex
1 = 10 Mbps, full duplex
2 = 100 Mbps, half duplex
3 = 100 Mbps, full duplex

6. Type 'i' or 'reset' to restart the router with the new image.

Re: Flash memory question

2001-03-15 Thread The.Rock

You will be able to overwrite the flash file with a newer one(or whatever),
it will ask you first if you want to erase flash before coming the IOS over.
If not just take the memory out and reverse the slots and then do "erase
flash" .

Re: Flash Memory

2001-01-06 Thread EH

If you want 16MB of flash, you have to erase the second flash partition and
merge the two 8MB flash modules. First, set up your tftp server and make a
back up copy (it's always nice to be able to go back if you need to).

copy flash tftp (follow the prompts - enter the info requested)

Commands to merge flash partitions:

enable
config terminal
no partition flash (It will ask you if you want to erase the second
partition. Confirm this.)
sh ver (you'll see 16,384 --or close-- system flash)

That's it - Your flash partitions will merge into one and you will have 16
MB flash. And Life Is Good!

2511 Flash Memory Question

2000-10-24 Thread Tom Pruneau

Greetings All

I have a 2511 with 4 MB of flash in it. I need to upgrade the IOS needs
7MB. I tried canabalizing another 2511 I had and adding it's 4MB to the 1st
routers 4MB making what I believed to be 8MB. But when I tried to tftp the
new image over I still got an error saying not enough memory, and yes I had
opted to erase the flash first. When I went and looked at the flash the
router saw it as two 4MB cards instead of 1 8MB.

What do I need to do to get the flash blended together to act as 1 8MB?

Thanks

 Greetings All

I have a 2511 with 4 MB of flash in it. I need to upgrade the IOS needs
 7MB. I tried canabalizing another 2511 I had and adding it's 4MB to the
1st
routers 4MB making what I believed to be 8MB. But when I tried to tftp the
new image over I still got an error saying not enough memory, and yes I
had
opted to erase the flash first. When I went and looked at the flash the
router saw it as two 4MB cards instead of 1 8MB.

What do I need to do to get the flash blended together to act as 1 8MB?

 Thanks

There is an IOS compression utility you can try to compress the image.
It's called Mzmaker.

RE: 2511 Flash Memory Question

2000-10-24 Thread Jason Baker

Hi Tom,

In your config you will see a line io mem 2 4 4 or something similar (awhile
since i have done this )
simply re-enter this line with a no in front of it.
Which means you have 2 4 meg patitions of flash memory.

To create one partition of 8 enter.
no io mem 2 4 4

RE: 2511 Flash Memory Question

2000-10-24 Thread Miller, Nathan (AZ15)

Tom,
Try these steps, I think

Boot the router in boot mode.
Enable and enter configuration mode
Issue "no partition flash" (or "no flash partition" - I think that it was
the first one).
Write the config change to memory.
Reload the router (still in boot mode).

Once this has been done I think that you will see a single flash partition.
Regards,

Nathan

RE: Flash Memory

2000-06-28 Thread Chris Larson

I had this problem before too. I am not exectlly sure about the following
but I believe this is what I did.
I loaded 1 the 8 meg in the slot I took it out of (because the bootstrap
will look in the same location) and loaded the 16 meg in the other slot. I
copied the ios to TFTP. I then did a partition on the 16 meg of flash. I
tftp'ed the IOS to the 16 meg flash. I took out the 8 meg and moved the 16
meg to the 8 meg slot and put in the second 16 meg. The bootstrap found the
IOS on the just part'ed flash. I then erased flash, partitioned into 1
large part and reload the the IOS again from TFTP.

Hi ,

Recently I had to upgrade a cisco3640 from 8 M flash to 32 M flash , I was
provided with 2 x 16 M flash .

I took out the 8M flash and plugged in the 2 16M flash ram .
I did a xmodem transfer of the ios to the flash . When I booted
the router is gave me an error .

I took out the new flash and plugged in the original flash with one 16M
Flash and I was able to boot from the original flash memory , but I still
got the error

I was using ios 12.08 ip/ipx/at/dec plus, I could not find any command to
format the flash . I have tried partitioning the flash and erasing the flash
but still get the
same error .

Can any noe tell me how I can format the new flash memory ?

thanks

Yes, you can use standard PCMCIA flash memory for the C1600. I am using
it.
