Seems like a shame to waste a month like that... or do you think that you
actually learned something?

Re: Passed CCNA&CCNP in a month [7:27142]

2001-11-23 Thread Henk Wolf

I find most people here are confusing certification with being knowledgeable.

If you are knowledgeable enough to do your job well, why go for the
certification anyway? Status?

On the other hand, employers ask for certifications more and more,
and mostly won't give you a job with a content or salary which is compatible
with the knowledge-level required for certifications,
at least when acquiring it the hard way.

The reason some certifications are easily obtained like MCSE, CNE and the
likes are that M$ and Novell are using the revenues for the certifications
as an extra source of income, without bordering to make good exams with a
database of 1 or more questions, which
not only depends on learning some facts.
Here lies the answer, just let M$, Cisco and so make the examquestion
database so extensive that learning the answers to all the question in fact
would be the same as learning all the relevant material without having
access to the exam qeustions.

Personally, I'm using a combined approach. I want to understand fully what I
learn and will learn more than strictly is necessary for the exam, but I
will use any good prep-exam/braindump in the days for my exam just to ensure
my efforts will yield the desired result.

Jeff

I couldn't agree with you more,
I have spent 8 months doing my CCNP and am very proud to attain this cert, I
studied every moment that I got and working 10 to 12 hours a day.
I still read up whenever I get a chance, and work really hard to gain as
much experience as I possibly can.

I personally would not like to see the status of cert to be watered down, so
please lets try and keep the value of this cert high.

Question
Is there a page that displays How many CCNA's NP's DA's DP's??

One thing I've learned in the past few years of networking, and hell, even
in life in general. If you have to CHEAT to get it, then you damn well
don't know it well enough to do normally.

Look at the MCSE, How many MCSE's out there went and bought cheat sheets
(no offense to the MCSE's on the list, but MCSE is like the A+, its so
utterly dilluted, it really does just look more like a paper cert then
anything else) and can't even change the desktop on a NT box? I know
plenty.

Do we want to see the CCNA/NP/DA/DP/IE become like this?

Cisco certs are susposed to carry respect with them (as should any cert,
but over time, people who just end up as paper certs remove alot of that
respect) and when crap like this comes up, it really does take away some
of the respect.

Sure, I understand that an IP address is a bunch of numbers seperated by
dots, does that mean I should be a CCIE? I think not.

I totally agree with you!

I have worked in a number of places with people who are certified and their
productivity was zilch. You need to have a lot of experience to back up the
certification in order to be productive.

I would like to see how long many of these paper certs would last in a

Man,

Watch it, you are on a dangerous terrain, nothing good come easy. Youhave
more hard Networking days ahead of you. Success easily achieved last but for
a while. Firget all those short cuts, roll up your sleeves and work hard.

It is just an advice. If you have the dream of making your Lab in this life
time, by the time you start preparing for your lab, you will understand
better that you were the enemy of your own self.

Ask from people that have attempted the labs or even the written and they
would advice you more better.

As far as Cisco certifications are concern, there is a limite to which all
these short cuts can take you.

The goal of Cisco and the Internetwork community is to get CCNPs (Cisco
Certified Network Professionals) and not people that can pass the CCNP exam
and so it is for all Cisco exams.

Regards.
Oletu Godswill CCNP, CCDP.

Depends on what you want to do? Be a "wrench turn'er" or a boss, ( i.e..

for a high paying job might be management. I am more of a "wrench turn'er"

Passed CCNA Exam [7:2586]

2001-04-30 Thread Sid Neou

I passed the CCNA exam with an 881/1000.

Thank you to everyone for contributing insight on the CCNA exam. I've
learned a great deal reading everyone posting. Jess thank so much for
helping me studying to pass this exam. It's help to have a study
pal.

What I used was the CCNA book from Todd Lammle, CCNA from Wendell Odom,
Cisco TCP/IP from Chris Lewis and flashcard from exam cram and
routersim. Also a study pal

Goodluck to everyone taking the exam.

RE: PASSED CCNA [7:1878]

2001-04-25 Thread Buri, Heather H

You can pass the test using the Cisco Press book ICND as Brett states below.
I also used Lammle's study guide. I felt between these two resources, I was
very well prepared for the test. I also had the benefit of having some
light router access although not a lot of heavy configuration experience.
If you are able to get any hands on, it will make taking the test easier.
But my thoughts are that the CCNA is mainly a rote memorization test so it
is possible to pass without any hands on at all.

Just my thoughts on it! Good luck on your exam.

Passed CCNA With score of 1000

2000-11-27 Thread Pieter Jordaan

I just passed the CCNA Exam with a score of 1000

I used the following resources

Cisco CCNA Certification Guide Companion with book from Wendell Odom
Sybex CCNA Second edition study Guide Bu Todd Lamle

The Sybex book is probably enough to pass the exam. Use the CCNA Companion
book to get more details about topics.

The Cisco CCNA book has a lot of good content but is not that good to read.
You can get easily confused and I got tired of reading "It is required of a
CCNA to know" Other than that it is a good book.

I suggest you start with the sybex book.

I Also used Boson CCNA Test no2 and the drill at techmindworks.com

If you use all these resources you should pass easily.

passed CCNA

2000-09-20 Thread tayta

Just did the exam, passed with 849
mainly thanks to this group, specially the Chuck guy thanks

Was a very very tough test, due to 1)issues coming up that I had not heard
of before, 2) very vague wording which you could only figure out by
physically breaking down the question into seperate parts, and study for 5
mins, if i had not took it slow I would have failed without doubt, also you
cannot go back to a question, so take it slow!

here are the bits that threw me which is most all,

-Result of hierarchial addressing framework?

-Wan Protocols was very tough, know Frame relay sub interfaces

-also tough, Purposes for using switches, bridges> collision reduction etc.
-VLANS, know this
-Show spantree 1 , what will you see?
-what device do you use to seperate two depts that wanna share some servers
but not others?
-know what devices do what to collision and broadcast domains?

-Frame tagging,

-Cryptic OSI questions, only way here is learn OSI inside out.

-Signalling System 7 , ?

-Backoff

-pick out valid mac address from line-up

keep a cool head

Wish you the best

Tayta

Passed CCNA

2000-08-28 Thread JL

OK, as much as I always previously loathed all the people who would post
regarding passing the CCxx test, I now find myself in the position to do so
(I think now that I was probably just jealous). I took and passed the CCNA
2.0 test today with a 903. My only complaint was that I had to answer
several questions after the test (NDA & are you over 18..etc..)before I
could see my results. My thanks to all the list members who post here and
share their valuable time to help us all get thru these tests and on with
our careers. Anyway, time to take a night off from studying and then start
finishing off my mcse (2 tests left!), then maybe a little Linux or Win2k or
CCDA? Who knows...education is a life long process and when I quit learning
I'll be dead.

Thanks to Everyone for all your posts,

JL

Unfortunately there is none. . . The best way to go
has to be the cisco press books combined with boson

Unfortunately there is none. . . The best way to go
has to be the cisco press books combined with boson

Wow Susan, you really let Cisco know who's boss with that score!!! Great
job and I wish you luck with your mission. By the way, I was going to do the
BSCN next also but the CiscoPress book doesn't come out until October. You
may want to get the BCMSN out of the way, then when the BSCN comes out you
can hit that. Just a suggestion. Good luck Sue,

Go to https://www.galton.com/~cisco_s/setpin.html and enter all the
information from your Sylvan Test Result - it asks for your Sylvan Prometric
ID, Registration Number, Exam (640-407, I suppose), Date, Site Number &
Grade (PASS).

That will create your account and then you can go in and sign the agreement
(do that ASAP if you wanna get your certificate fast - I got mine today!!)

They will say "Select 2 answers".
You can't go back, there is no unanswered question summary
like in Microsoft tests. The only Cisco tests that let you go
backwards are design tests.

There are a couple of poorly worded questions but I didn't
see any deliberate attempts to decieve or confuse.

Know the OSI model!
Know your show commands.
Understand precisely how to subnet a class 3 IP address.
Understand access lists.
Know split horizon, poison reverse and hold down timers.
Know Frame-Relay and BRI ISDN.

Take your time, you have 90 minutes, I took my time
and finished in 45. After the test, you will be given your results
and another paper with a URL that you must go to and
sign and agreement, you must do this before
you get the CCNA.

The CCNA certificate is surprisingly good looking and comes
in a nice, embossed presentation folder.

Be prepared, if you can answer *all* the objectives
you will pass the test.

Good luck and tell us how you do!

Hi I recently passed CCNA v1.0 .. and was wondering if anyone could help me
interms of what I should be doing next? I gather CCNP v2.0 is the most
logical step I should be taking. Which exam should I take first? .. and what
text books can anyone recommend to me?

For my CCNA i used:

1. CCNA by Sybex (i didnt like this book very much)
2. Interconnecting Cisco Network Devices by Cisco Press - I loved this
book!.. yes I know this is geared towards CCNA v2.0.. but I found it
excellent in my studies for v1.0 (which i scored 925/1000 on).

I really prefer to invest my money in cisco press books from now on..

Any advice?

Many thanks

passed CCNA 1.0 !!!!

2000-07-24 Thread Luther

Well im glad i got through that one. i scored 925/100 .. my section analysis
was:

OSI Reference: 85
WAN Protocols: 76
Cisco IOS: 100
Network Protocols: 86
Routing: 100
Network Security: 80
LAN Switching: 100

There were some funny questions and i thought i actually was actually going
to fail the exam hehe..

Does anyone know how long my ccna v1.0 status will last?
Any recommendations on what i should do now? v2.0 possible.. ccda ?

Maybe take a rest hehe

Many thanks

Re: Passed CCNA 640-407

2000-07-23 Thread Avran

I took the CCNA 640-407 and passed it. Cisco meant it when they said it is
random set of questions. I suggest that you read the following at east
once.

* WAN (especially Frame Relay & ISDN)
* Routing Protocols
* CLI commands (Make sure you know what context you are in when entering any
commands. E.g.. testrouterA> or testrouterA# or or testrouterA(config) etc.

You will do fine. Odom's book is excellent! Lamelle has done a fair job
too..

Re: Passed CCNA 640-407

2000-07-21 Thread Timothy Harkin

The questions were mostly multiple choice. For questions where I had to
pick more than one option, I was told how many answers to select ('pick the
three best answers'). There were also sveveral (5 maybe) drag and drop type
questions. No fill-in-the-blanks.

Good Luck!!

2000-07-18 Thread Timothy Harkin

I am in a similar situation, having recently passed CCNA 1.0. My personal
feeling regarding what test to study for next is that it depends:) If you
have a situation where you can mix the study with actual experience, then
that should tell which tests towork for next.

For example, I work in a company that has several projects to undertake in
the next few months. We are upgrading our RAS implementation with a 3640,
and we are also upgrading our switching backbone to Gigabit with 5500's and
6500's. So I will be studying for BCRAN and BCMSN, because I will be

Friends,

Just passed CCNA 640-407 with a 953!

First hand feelings : very ambiguous and confusing wordings, practice tests
hlep but not much, Lammle book was great but that shouldn't be your only
resource. Cisco Press book (CCNA Exam Certification Guide - Wendell Odom)
helped out where the Lammle book lacked - particularly in understanding
Switching.

My problem was I was inundated by reading material - amassed too many books
/ notes, etc. and was trying to do it all at the same time... :-)

Done in 35 minutes, but you can't go back and mark/review any questions so
be very sure before clicking the NEXT button.

Thanks to all knowledgable and helpful people on this newsgroup who helped
out immensely. This is really a great resource!!

On to CCDA & CCNP track.

And now to a often repeated question :-) - Any hints on which test I
should tackle next for CCNP 2.0 ? What books/resources will I need for that
? What kind of a lab would I require for CCNP ? (I have 2 x 2501s with

The few people I know personally that got their CCNA, start on the CCDA
immediately. Then again, they (and I) are also looking to pursue CCDP after
CCNP.

So the passing mark is 820/1000 is it? Does it mean that we got to get at
least 82% of the correct answer? Previously, what is the passing mark for
CCNA 1.0?

The the exam had to be completed within 75 minutes. When I finished I had
almost 20 minutes to
spare. There is one important difference between 1.0 and 2.0. On the CCNA
2.0, you can not mark
the question and come back to it.

Re: Passed CCNA 2.0

2000-06-08 Thread Paco Rivera

The CCNA was my first test. I was not able to register for the beta on time,
but I did have the added benefit of going through the Cisco Systems
Networking Academy. I have to say that the Networking Academy did prepare me
for the CCNA. I spent 3 weeks of reviewing after the fourth semester class
was over. I was also familiar with how Cisco 'words' their tests. It's
something you pick up on while taking all the quizzes and the semester
exams.

Much of my Cisco hardware experience is limited to the Academy. The hardware
included Cisco 25xx, Cisco 26xx, and Catalyst 19xx, and various cloud
emulators. I personally have Cisco 2502 and a Catalyst 2924xl en, and I have
other experience on 3com equipment. (Hint: Catalyst switches are part of the
curriculum, and we were quizzed on it. I can't say anymore than that...) It
seems to me that the v2.0 exam follows the Networking Academy's curriculum.
This maybe true for CCNP 2.0 since Cisco is starting to offer classes on it.
Their starting to offer the CCNP classes locally. I've seen the 55xx and
50xx.

Congratulation Philip,

I will be taking CCNA 2.0 this Saturday, would you mind share your
experience while attempting the questions?
I couldn't find any CCNA 2.0 exam outline, and I was a bit worried of the
topics covered. FYI, I've failed the CCNA
beta (620/1000), so your information will be really helpful to me.

Thanks!

Best wishes,

Chee Tong,

What I could tell about the differences (after the CCNA 2.0 beta exam) are
the material covers
such as VLAN, trunking and some other switching technique which is not
cover in CCNA 1.0.
I'll be attempting this exam again this coming Saturday, hope I could get
through this time. :)

Best wishes,

hey guys and gals,

Well, passed my CCNA this morning. Showed up at the testing center and
my
internet registration hadn't gone through, and I was all pumped for the
exam, so I had to do some running around to get re-registered, but
that's
another story. The exam itself I found surprisingly easy, compared with
the
depth with which I studied a lot of the material. I think I was making
the
test out to be worse than it was. I had 78 questions, and they were a
pretty good spread. I had almost no questions on routing protocols.
The
test was probably strongest on OSI layers, bridging and switching, with
subnetting ranking up there too. But no one area was extremely
difficult.
Anyway, I'm fairly new to this study group and haven't posted much, but
I
definitely appreciate the help and encouragement I've gotten. Guess I'm
on
to the ACRC exam.

Speaking of which, can anyone suggest some good reading/study material
for
that exam?

Thanks again, looking forward to all the exams to follow.
