Stus-List Re: Accurate Fuel Tank Measurements

2023-06-27 Thread Tom Buscaglia via CnC-List
I use my Hobbes meter.  I take a picture at each fill-up and try to keep
the tank at least 1/2 full. I have a pretty accurate picture of my per
hour consumption. Seems close enough for me.

On 6/27/2023 11:08 AM, Peter W. via CnC-List wrote:

Can anyone share their procedure to determine (with reasonable accuracy) how
much fuel their tank holds, at any given time?
While I have a fuel gauge, it isn’t very accurate as it under-estimates how
much fuel is in tank (by several gallons).
I’m thinking of trying to use a wood or plastic dowel, but that would require a
“straight shot” to the tank bottom (I.e., no bends or obstructions).
Any thoughts?

2023-06-01 Thread Tom Buscaglia via CnC-List
In spite of what they say the new masthead unit is not compatible with the i60
instruments. The direction it's fine, but the wind speed adjustment available
is not sufficient to compensate To get the old head to like the new data
protocols. I would think it is the same, or worse, for the i50 series.

I ended up getting a new head and having to also install the various "talk"
conversions.

Our club has a group discount at Fisheries that I am happy to share.
The more it is used the deeper the discounts go.  The actual discount
amount varies from item to item.  But, in some areas it can be
significant.  They also give a 10% discount for the first 90 day you own
your boat.

Call in a mention Quartermaster Yacht Club and have them set up an
account for you that is tied to the club discount.

The only other chandlery I can recommend is Hodges Marine.
https://www.hodgesmarine.com/   They beat Fisheries and pretty much
anywhere else on marine electronics including Raymarine.

Stus-List Re: Boats to avoid; formerly- Boatless again

My feeling about boat shopping is that you will know her when you see her.

On 2/23/2023 4:48 AM, Danny Haughey via CnC-List wrote:
I'm not sure there is much research that went into this comment.  Most
of the boats you listed have been around for decades and some are
amazingly designed and of high quality construction.  I think Andy was
talking more about the triangular shaped, (in plan) modern boats that
are almost catamaran-like.  These boats are, lightweight, flat
bottomed boats, with a hard chine on each side,  In essence, creating
2 hulls, one for each tack.  However, the interior vary, Moody's
interior are very traditional, with plenty of wood, curved corners and
plenty of hand holds.  The older Hylas, oyster, Holland boats, I'm
looking at are pretty traditional.  One is even designed by Sparkman
and Stevens.
This will be our 4th sail boat, hence, our 4th shopping experience,
and one thing I can say with certainty, is there are plenty of
surprises in boat shopping.  You simply can't make these sweeping
generalizations with any degree of certainty. There are some
beautifully fitted out Bavaria's from the late 90s early 2000s.  The
boat shows simply can't be a real gauge of the used boat market.
Hell, Catalina actually produced an amazingly well build 38 footer
that was designed by Sparkman and Stevens with plywood cored decks and
solid fiberglass hull.
Making an argument as to why you're hanging onto your boat is great.
But to dismiss quality brans, wholesale like that, is just not helpful
banter.  Thanks for the input, though.

I was pleased to read Andrew Burton's comments about the modern trendy
boats (hylas, oyster, moody, Holland, Bavaria, Dufour etc., ); when
someasked him what to avoid, he said..."... I’m just not a fan of that
ilk. Plus the interiors tend to be a bit ikea-ish with lots of sharp
corners and few handholds."

Andy, thank you, thank you; I have long felt that way, and it is nice
to hear a person with your experience (and credentials) finally say it!
That is a major reason I have held on to my C 37;  boats that can
provide what it provides are going to cost 10 times what I have in my
boat and don't handle as well..!

I use Watco Teak oil available at Home Depot and Lowes if that's what
your referring to.   I usually wipe the wood down with a cleaner like
diluted Pinesol in a spray bottle.  Then I clean the wood with
Denatured Alcohol and let dry.  Then use a soft terry cloth rag to
wipe on some teak oil.  Let soak in and wipe off any excess.  It
seals the wood and hides any dings and makes look very nice.

The problems are very sporadic and are not consistent by any means. I

I am still using Windows Live Mail from Windows Essentials (no longer

I don't know what to suggest at this time except for you to experiment

I keep trying to find the problem and the solution but right now things

We have an Iverson dodger. Love it. We are cruisers and it helps here in the
rainy PNW.

We also have a detachable rain fly from the aft edge to the aft rigging and my
wife made both wing shades and clear rain shrouds that make it nice and cozy.

I had the wheel pilot on Alera, my 37+/40. It may fine for for your intended
use. But as far as I know, it is still a belt drive unit. The primary point
of failure is the reduction gear.

I went with below deck and regret not doing is years ago.

Stus-List Re: Prepping for overland transport

2021-09-28 Thread Tom Buscaglia via CnC-List
With such a short haul, I don't know if this
would be worth the effort. But when we brought
Alera from Niagara on the Lake to Seattle, Rob
MacLachlan, of South Shore Yachts who
de-commissioned her for transport, suggested we
cover the hull with a layer ofJoy dish soap. We
did and when she got here we washed it off and it
took the road grit and salt with it.

Hi all,

The excellent advise a couple weeks ago on
replacing standing rigging led us down a rabbit
hole. Long story short, we are now getting ready
to have our 25, Sweet Chariot, moved from
Washington DC to Solomons MD on the Chesapeake.
A much longer drive, but better sailing and boat yard options.

We've never had her moved by trailer, and I'm
curious what we should expect of the hauler. One
says we should have the boat fully prepped with
mast secured to deck. Another said they prefer
to do it all themselves (which I also prefer).Â

Any tips for getting her ready for a road trip
or dealing with boat haulers? We've checked with
a few people in the area, but any recommendations would be appreciated as well!

Thanks!
Stephen

Stus-List 1980 40 Cheetah needs TLC

2021-09-17 Thread Tom Buscaglia via CnC-List
I senior member of our Yacht club has pretty much
abandoned his 1980 C 40. He is very motivated
to sell her but not willing to do much to get her
sold. She is not listed anywhere yet...

Cheetah was raced for years and has a decent
complement of both racing and cruising
sails. The westbrook diesel was disassembled to
clean some salt crystals out of the exit area
from the exchanger and not reassembled. So, she
has not been run in 2-3 years along with
everything else that goes with letting a boat sit
for that long. But she is a C and he may be
willing to sell her to the right buyer for cheap!

If you are interested his name is Pete Clarke and
he can be reached at pgr...@comcast.net.

Stus-List Intermittent stalling

2021-08-03 Thread Tom Buscaglia via CnC-List
We are off on a two week cruise. Second day running the engine starts to
falter, then stall. I check the Racor, no water. I did replace the fuel pump
last year after we ran out of fuel w the fuel tank half full. But it seemed to
be fine.

She started and we stopped in a Edmonds to top off the tank, but it only took 7
g.

She then ran pretty solid for the next 2 hours with only a few issues.

I have not changed the fuel filters for about 150 hours over two years.

I am thinking that either the filters need replacing or the fuel pump just does
not lift the fuel enough.

Any help is appreciated.

Stus-List 3HM35F oil capacity puzzle

2021-05-16 Thread Tom Buscaglia via CnC-List
Every time I change oil on Alera I check the engine spec for the Yanmar 3HM35F
that calls for 5.7 quarts. I have never been able to get more than 4 quarts
out or in.

I use an electric pump extractor via the dip stick hole. I understand that the
angle of the engine on my 37+ results in the oil laying at the aft end of the
pan and try to make sure the tube gats all the way back there.

Anyone else been able to replace over 4 quarts!

Well, almost five years later, I finally did
this clutch adjustment, following the procedure
in the Moyer manual. The actual adjustment was
pretty straightforward; no problems there except
the contortions required to access the gearbox
from the lazarets of a 30 MK I. I turned the
adjustment collar only one notch. However it
was a bit of a struggle to get everything
reassembled. I had to re-tap one of the bolt
holes to make its bolt thread. And I had to
disconnect the shift cable to get the starboard
two bolts aligned through its angle iron and
gearbox access plate, then re-connect the shift
cable ensuring correct adjustment. But, good
news, last night I pushed her throttle wide open
with five guys on board, and drove her at 6+
knots under power. I haven’t been able to do
that since buying the boat - before, her clutch
would slip beyond half-throttle.

Randy,
Probably a pretty straight forward adjustment
in the gear box. Mine did this when I bought it
and a knowledgable A4 mechanic fixed it in
about an hour after unknowledgeable mechanics
dorked around for many hours on cables, props,
etc. and many hundreds of dollars. There is
definitely help to be had on the Moyer forums
for this exact issue. It is also covered in
detail on the Moyer A4 overhaul manual.

If you are handy you can fix it yourself in
about 30 minutes. You take off the gearbox
cover plate, remove a set screw that holds a
clutch ring/collar thing in place, rotate ring
one way or the other one notch, put screw back
in, do not drop screw down inside gearbox, test
it out. It may make getting the engine in or
out of gear a bit harder, there is a trade off.
There is also an after market collar with
notches closer together to avoid the too much too little issue.
There are times when you need to know that you
have maximum thrust - like when you are about
to ram another boat or dock. To my mind this is
a serious safety issue. A young, strong crewman
fended my stern off when this happened to me
while backing out of my slip in high wind. I
parked the boat immediately and called a yard with A4 experience.
If you cannot find the adjustment instructions
on the Moyer site, contact me off list and I will send you a PDF.

mount is broken or failing it may be causing
the problem. Get a partner to create the
problem while you are watching the engine.

It could also be as simple as adjusting the cable.

Stus-List Re: Atomic 4 trouble shootings

2021-04-12 Thread Tom Buscaglia via CnC-List
I shredded several knuckles on my 35 MK1 working
on the A4. Moyer is indeed the best source for info and support.

For electronics, in addition to the distributor,
check your plug wires too. Make sure the plugs
and points are properly gapped.

I agree that sticking valves are often the
issue. The nice thing about the flathead A4 is
that you can see the valves through the spark
plug hole. Put some Marvel Mystery Oil into each
cylinder. Then hand crank the engine while
looking at the valves in each cylinder. If one
or more are stuck you should be able to get it to move with a screw driver.

I ended up pulling the head off and working on
the valves, head and block. The water passages
in the block were my biggest issue. Crud and a
few chunks of impeller were the causes. I used
the Moyer flush kit and replaced the heat
exchanger. Never had issues after that.

Could also be a gunked up carb. If non marine
fuel was used there could be a bunch of gunk in
the float reservoir or jets. I just replaced
mine new for old. Rebuilding it also works.

The A4 it a simple machine. I'm sure you will
get it up and running just fine, in time.

Can I suggest the Moyer forum for A4 questions?
There is a lot of expertise there on A4s not restricted to A4s in C

Also I think from the sounds of it you may have
a stuck valve or 2 or 3. They will collectively
get you running again. Probably the first
question will be compression numbers for all 4 cylinders.

Hello

You may remember a few months ago I asked some
questions about rewiring the panel. I appreciate
the advice at that time. After approx 50 hours
I am mostly done, it's not perfect but vastly
improved. I built a harness from the panel
switches to my converted cutting board (it was
almost the right size and cost $7.00 as I didn't
want to use plywood) distribution system. All
connectors were replaced, properly crimped and
insulated heat shrink to seal the connectors.

I still have some heat shrink on the main
cables (the elec tape is temp while testing
circuits tonight )and a bit of tidying/labeling to do.

Here are some before and almost complete pictures.

This should be a little easier if I need to trace circuits.

Stus-List Re: C 40

2021-03-22 Thread Tom Buscaglia via CnC-List
Speaking of C 40's, I was down at our club
today hanging out on Alera, under the winter
cover that still has to come off. As I walked
the docks I saw that there is a 40 there that has
been neglected. I checked and according to the
registration sticker on it, it looks like has not
been used since 2017. I called the club
dock-master and apparently the owner is on notice
to vacate the slip by the end of this month as
the club requires boats to be both properly
maintained and used. This is neither.

I reached out to the owner but have not heard
back yet. Not sure of the year but from the cut
of the ports I suspect it is from the late
80s. If anyone in the PNW or anywhere else with
the will to relocate the boat is interested, I'll
see what the deal is the let everyone know. I
think it would be an awesome deal for
someone. Maybe even a freebee! (Yes Dave, I'm thinking of you and Dave).

only cruise together; never with a crew except for day sails.

The idea of getting around to our favorite spots
in hours instead of days is quite
attractive. But the related costs and noise have
been serious issues. The 37+ is just the perfect
boat for us in so many ways it is hard to
consider moving to the dark side. Though it may
be inevitable as we slowly deteriorate into
useless blobs of rotting flesh...Gosh.. that got a little dark.

Anyway...best of luck and I hope you don;t get booted by Stu!

Stus-List Re: Bilge monitor

2021-03-02 Thread Tom Buscaglia via CnC-List
I keep my last gen iPad on the boat with only a
few apps, other than Navionics and all my sailing
related stuff. It shows up on the network as
"Alera's iPad" That way we have several charts
running at the same time. One at the helm and then other anywhere else we want.

I can add it to my plan for an extras $10 a month.

The key to a reliable bilge pump system is the
float switch. Install a Ultra Safety Systems
bilge switch and sleep with confidence.

IMHO, they're superior to any others. I've
replaced a number of Rule float switches over
the last 3 decades. I've not observed one
single USS bilge switch failure. The SR model
has a lifetime warranty. The others a 5 year warranty.

I mounted one of these between the locker and the
roller. I bungie it up when dropping and let it
ride on the chain on the way up. I also use it
to take the tension off the windlass any time the anchor is set or up.

Hello all,

I was reading through one of the sailing
magazines, and there was commentary about the
value of a windlass or "at least an anchor
chain hook" you can use to take a break when hoisting anchor.

While I don't feel the need for a windlass yet,
I have had situations when raising the anchor
where I've needed to wrap chain around one of
the forward cleats because a wind gust is
blowing me off. This usually results in some
chain finding its way through my hands, and
much more concerning is the chance for hands to
be caught between the chain and the cleat with
crushingly obvious consequences. If I had the
ability to easily hook the chain to hold it
while the bow swings off the wind or for the
purposes of pulling the hook out of the mud would be helpful.

Is there such a hook that can be permanently
mounted on the bow/anchor roller where I could
simply put the chain under moderate tension for
a minute or two while things get sorted out?

Thanks in advance for your insights,

On my ‘85 37, I’m thinking of mounting heavy

the bottom legs a double glassed shelf (3/4”
m.grade ply) to span the locker opening p-s. The

more structure in the bow but your thoughts are
welcome on possible issues from this
arrangement. It does reduce access to the locker
somewhat, but a 10” shelf out of 28” opening allows some room yet.

Thoughts?

Stus-List Re: New sails?????

2020-12-15 Thread Tom Buscaglia
I got an Asymmetrical for my prior boat, Jubilee,
a 71 36 MK 1, from Dirk Sharland at National Sail
Supply, LLC (Rolly Tasker Sails, Florida), 26092
Withrow Rd, Brooksville, FL 34601, 1-800-611-3823. fax 813-200-1385

Rolly Tasker makes a lot of sails for other
"sailmakers" around the world. Dirk used to work
at the loft in and has a very close relationship
to Rolly Taskler in Thailand. His price and
service were spot on and I have no problem recommending them.

I am getting a new set of cruising sails for our

Quantum. I have had Doyle sail before and their
service and quality were great. Made in St.Pete
Fl. right up the road. 100 miles.
Quantum sails with almost identical specs comes
in about 400 bucks lower but are made in
Sri Lanka. Service is relatively close on on
the east coast of Fl. Given between the two, what might you buy.
Has anybody had experience with the SriLanka

and a lot of sails come from there.

Stus-List Re: New sails

2020-11-02 Thread Tom Buscaglia
I'll second for UK. We got a new main and 145
genny from, Stewart at UK Sails NW in Sidney
BC. He gave us a Boat show discount in August
and that, along with the exchange rate. Made it a great deal.

We don't race, but I love the sails. They were
made in the Chicago loft as well. He even
brought them down the us in Vashon Island,
outside of Seattle, and set them up. This was
especially good due to my prior nightmare with
our main due to a bad build for the Schaefer In Boom furling set up.

They are shown here -
https://flic.kr/p/Qu3S9G You can see my
preventer set up here for a second as well.

At the end of last season we decided to replace
our unknown age sails (came with the boat) and
got quotes from North, Precision, Rolly Tasker
and UK Sails. Our previous boat had a North
Main and UK Genoa (now with Joe D.). We liked
both but the UK Genoa was a real favorite. The
UK Sails were manufactured in the Chicago
loft. They came out and measured the boat to
make the sails. We weren't sure we would get
the sails since Illinois was shut down tighter
than Michigan but they worked on sails orders
while "making PPE". The only thing that they
missed was putting on Sail Numbers and the logo
on the main. They are taking the sails back now
that the season is over to add the numbers and
logo. They are even adding draft stripes to make up for the miss.

The sails have met all of our expectations and
it is nice having a "local" loft to deal with.

Stus-List Re: A4 Running Rough

2020-11-01 Thread Tom Buscaglia

Randy

My 35 MK1 had an A4. I ended up pulling the head
and refacing the carb before it got smooth. I
also had to flush out the cooling jacked in the engine.

AS far as rough running, yes to Marvel. IN
addition to the carb, you may also want to pull
the spark plug and pour a little into each
cylinder. And while you have the spark plug out
you can try to see the valves and release a stuck
valve (if that's your issue) by putting a
screwdriver into the cylinder through the spark
plug whole and seeing if you can push the stuck
valve down. Just manually rotate the crank a few
times to make sure you can check them all. It is
a standard flathead configuration, if that
helps. That actually worked for me on one valve.

The oth4 trouble po9nt as the carb. My 35 had
been sitting for a few year and the float in the
carb was filled with a growth that resembled the
inside of a malted milk ball.

Finally, you can get a tome of support and parts
for your A4 at https://moyermarine.com/. I could
not have done my engine tear down without their support.

When you do this trick, how much Marvel Mystery

This will usually free up a stuck valve and

I know ghetto do point to point and pre COVID they had trucks going all over

For Alera the admiral made a set of cloth covers for our vertical fenders.
Very similar to the ones Taylor makes.

No scratches on the awlgrip.

Repairs and new bottom paint should be complete
by the end of next week, weather permitting.  Touche' will be a new boat!

The sad part is Touche's pier in Pensacola was
severely damaged during the storm and must be
rebuilt.  I will have to bring Touche' back to
my other slip in Louisiana for a few
months.  It also means there is no place to
dock Touche' after splashing in order to
provision it for the trip.  Since the now
condemned pier was at the same shipyard, they
have been very accommodating since Touche' was a
long term tenant.  I scheduled the last slot
for their work week for splash next
Friday.  Since the haul out bay will not be
needed until Monday morning, the shipyard is
allowing me to keep the boat in the haul out bay
for the weekend.  We'll provision it and depart Saturday.

Keeping moisture out of the oil is another key

In 2005 we lived in Miami when Katrina crossed

I'm pretty sure you have a 30-2...if so, Tim
Seppala at the Burton Boatyard, adjacent to the
Quartermaster Marina, might be the most
economical and convenient option for you. He did
all of the work on my old 35 MK 1 and does good
work at a good price. His phone numbers are

decide to go there, let me know. I live near the

Aside from the PITA in getting there and back by

protected from the weather and against
mechanical damage i.e. your tank and (I assume
regulator, gauge and solenoid) are unprotected.
2. installed in a ventilated location on the

flow directly overboard i.e. just as much chance to flow into the cockpit.
3. A relief valve’s point of discharge shall
be at least 20 inches (508mm) distant from any
opening to a cabin or the hull interior. i.e.
your tank is right next to the blower intake (or exhaust, I'm not sure which).

Don't get me wrong, I've wrestled with the same
issues and it is near impossible to meet all
requirements in a retrofit. My propane system
isn't connected right now, until I have a better
plan in place (and my composite tank is expired anyway).
