[Cooker] Install March 29th DrakX 1.470
Hello, I tried an install again tonight and there were no glitches during the install. During the install I did an expert install with English-US and Dutch-Neatherlands selected, and I selected everything I could except for those dealing the chinese etc fonts. Bbut there are a lot of file on sunsite.uio.no and either don't install or are not offered on the "Expert" install as even a choice to install. I would like to see and option that allows me to install everything except those packages that are mutually exclusive and then offer me which of those I want to install. Since I never know what I am going to need I like to have it all installed so I don't have to go looking for and installing packages later. Some that are needed that are not offered but expected... esound - Gnome needs this, you load libesound why not esound? aspell - It installed the DE language file but not the English or Dutch language files. Fonts - If you are going to install fonts load both the 75 and 100 dpi versions devel - Since I was going to do development work I made sure I selected all the development packages but most of the -devel- files were not installed. Below are all the files that are on sunsite.uio.no that were not installed and/or was not given the option to install. [Cooker] another clean install - weird results
Hello OK, tried again to install clean. Downloaded a new floppy image for PCMCIA. Fired up the cable modem and did a ftp install from ftp.ciril.fr. The results aren't pretty. The install itself looked like it went fine. Rebooting after into KDE shows a bunch of broken links, absolutely horrible looking fonts, NO MENUS. (?) (Copies of the logs on their way to Pixel by separate mail) Also, when it boots up TONS of errors, most with messages about touch file - no such file or directory. ALSO, when it boots, thinks it's mandrake 7.2 flashes that on the screen for like 1-2 seconds. I'll try it again tomorrow. PLEASE - where did anti-ailiased fonts go? HOW can I turn them back on? The text file viewer in Konqueror is useless on this machine without them, and web browsing isn't much better. Vinny

The newest ncurses package is ncurses-5.2-12mdk-src.rpm unfortunatley no one has built an ncurses-devel package to match, you can install ncurses-devel-5.1-8mdk-i586.rpm with --nodeps and it appears to work fine, but it's no fun getting the dependency problem, maybe instead of ncurses-devel-5.1-8mdk-i586.rpm requiring =5.2-12 we could throw a >= in there ? unless someone is working on a new devel package, which would be even better :) Ryan

Yes I'm getting very similar hangs. I've been unable to locate the problem exactly but I noticed they started happening while using the nvidia graphics card driver (new video card) so I was blaming that although the video itself wasn't hanging so it didn't make sense to blame that (coincidence?). These hangs still occur though and almost always seem to be related to upgrading RPMS on my machine, whether it's from kpackage, rpmdrake or at a real console. >I was getting a weird problem. The servers work perfectly for other Linux versions, for Windows, for Mc, for Solaris and every other OS, so don't ask me to modify server's side! It's just an "8.0" pb I suppose. Claudio

This issue has been brought up before, and somebody (I forgot the name) suggested that basesystem requires a virtual package called "bootloader" or something like that instead of requiring both lilo and grub. Hello guys, I´m new to posting on this list, but I´ve been following it for a while now. My name is Roland and I have some basic knowledge on linux. I really do like the Mandrake distribution and would like to conribute as much as I can. I´ve had about same problem with reiserfs partitions, which startet to occur after a kernel update to 20mdk. with 15mdk everything was alright. the problems with my mashine did not only concern upgrading an libs, but especially large files froze my mashine. a 700 mb file even froze it to death. a warning: nobody try the reiserfsck --rebuild-tree on this. (well I tried ;-) the current version is definitely not safe and shredders your partition (was it built with gcc 296 ??). it did just stop at some point without error message. maybe those suse patches that were included in kernel ?? regards Roland *** REPLY SEPARATOR *** On 29.03.2001 at 16:56 Simon Peter Nicholls wrote: >I've had exactly the same problem with urpmi updates on my reiserfs >partition. >The problem only started within the last few days though - updates were >fine before. >I tried restarting each time but my lib files became corrupted somewhere >along the line - I've just reverted to beta2. > >Is there any chance of having the 'install from hdisk' instal option >recognize reiserfs? I had a system with only reiserfs partitions and experienced the same kind of problems. I completly reinstalled it with ext2 partitions. Actually, I tried reiserfsck before that, but I never could recover the file system corruptions. For example, the mtab file would always contain twice the same line. I remember seing an out of memory kernel message. I also had these freezes with rpm (installing several packages at a time), so I am not sure which of rpm or reiserfs is the real responsible. I cannot make a working launcher Icon in gnome. Both for the desktop and the panel. If I select the menu item run, I can start the programs by typing the same command and it works. But it doen't from the launcher icons.

That's why we'll be releasing Mozilla 0.8 with LM 8.0 (but 0.8.1 will still be in cooker).. For people testing frozen 8.0, please, uninstall mozilla and re-install latest mozilla package from frozen (0.8-4mdk).. I haven't set a serial on it because it would cause too much headache.. If Mozilla get its bugs corrected fast enough, I'll put back 0.8.1 in LM 8.0 but I don't think it will be possible :(( -- Frédéric Crozat MandrakeSoft

All programs which uses gtkhtml I know (evolution, pan) check if gtkhtml has been compiled with gconf and initializes gconf before gtkhtml. Lupus, Mandrake folks compile GtkHTML with gconf support, and when Pronto uses GtkHTML and tries to init it, GtkHTML complains that Gconf is uninizlied and therefor craps out, the Mandrake guys say its a bug in Pronto, I say GtkHTML should initlize Gconf? or something lke that, what do you say? Re: [Cooker] Reiser FS causing Console Freeze
I've had exactly the same problem with urpmi updates on my reiserfs partition. The problem only started within the last few days though - updates were fine before. I tried restarting each time but my lib files became corrupted somewhere along the line - I've just reverted to beta2. Is there any chance of having the 'install from hdisk' instal option recognize reiserfs? It would help lots! [Cooker] Konqueror and flash5 plugin
Hi I'm using KDE 2.1.0 and I tried to make the Macromedia Flash 5 plugin to work. And well, it doesen't. Below is the output from nspluginscan. [Cooker] GNOME splash screen
Is anyone planning to replace the current GNOME splash screen image? The foot has many artifacts around it which leave it quite unpleasant to the eye. Why not use the Ximian images or something similar? I hope it's not a "not invented here" type thinking ;0) -- Steve Fox http://k-lug.com
[Cooker] postgresql and setup
Hi, upgrading the setup package results in deleting the postgres user, because the uid is 40 and the user is not mentioned in base-passwd/passwd.master. It's no fun to add the user everytime setup is upgraded ;) Can you fix this ? (Info : cooker, postgresql-7.0.3-8mdk, setup-2.1.9-39mdk) Thomas

[Cooker] Reiser FS causing Console Freeze
This has been confusing me like hell.. I'm putting the cooker on a Dell Inspiron 8000. I had setup a system: / = ext2 /usr = reiserfs /home = reiserfs I was getting a weird problem. During random disk activity. e.g. installing rpm updates. The rpm process would freeze, but not the computer or X desktop. But I could no longer do anything that needed to talk to the filesystem. I thought it was disk related. I could call a system shutdown, if there was a spare console open, and it would display the shutdown broadcast, but nothing would get killed. So I reinstalled with just one reiserfs: / = ext2 /home = reiserfs And I've just had the same things happen. But this time I was able to put the finger on the /home Reiser Partition, as I could do everything, except operate on the /home partition. I've now umounted /home and wait to hear if this is just my system that has problems with ReiserFS or if everyone is avoiding it? Can I be of any help debugging this problem? Rgds, Billus.
[Cooker] Last night - install
Hello, Last night ftp install with PCMCIA image. Went well, only a couple of very minor issues. Message when loading modules for starting the card services said that card services did not match kernel. Still worked though. Bad packages - Drakconfig and Abisuite, which loaded fine after install, no problem. Why is Tetex not on the package listing? All of it's accessories are. Last install was included by default, and it isn't small! Is this un-selectable now somehow? It seems that the anti-ailiasing is now off by default? How can this be turned on? I LIKE the anti-ailiasing. Isn't obvious how to do this from the KDE menues. Didn't see a way to do this in Drakconfig. Should the choice of how to do this be part of the installation? Vinny

In no way was I trying to make you feel like an idiot. I just knew that those files worked as I am using them myself on the latest mdk kernel. Sometimes you download a bad src.rpm with dependency problems, so I thought I would at least give you another option.

But, for a user point of wiev: I need just one window manager and one desktop. Just _one_. I'd like to set up things with tools that have exactly the same look and feel. We have a great environment (libralies, tools etc) that are free, and they work wery well. Those tools are KDE libraries and KDE Control Center. If most people were working for the same goal, maybe we could beat Win in issues of GUI simplicity etc. There is no use trying to reinvent the wheel. I'd also like to set up a keyboard shortcut for launching an application in KDE. Mandrake should not try to use Menudrake, since it does not work OK. > > so now hackers have a new library to hack! > > And people with big mouths have to learn to shut them up. > What about "free" in sense of freedom of speech?
