[Cooker] Install March 29th DrakX 1.470

2001-03-29 Thread Robin Cook

Hello,

I tried an install again tonight and there were no glitches during the
install. During the install I did an expert install with English-US
and Dutch-Neatherlands selected, and I selected everything I could
except for those dealing the chinese etc fonts.
Bbut there are a lot of file on sunsite.uio.no and either don't
install or are not offered on the "Expert" install as even a choice to
install. I would like to see and option that allows me to install
everything except those packages that are mutually exclusive and then
offer me which of those I want to install. Since I never know what I
am going to need I like to have it all installed so I don't have to go
looking for and installing packages later.

Some that are needed that are not offered but expected...
esound - Gnome needs this, you load libesound why not esound?
aspell - It installed the DE language file but not the English or
 Dutch language files.
Fonts - If you are going to install fonts load both the 75 and 100 dpi
 versions
devel - Since I was going to do development work I made sure I
selected all the development packages but most of the -devel-
 files were not installed.

Below are all the files that are on sunsite.uio.no that were not
installed and/or was not given the option to install.

[Cooker] another clean install - weird results

2001-03-29 Thread Vincent Meyer

Hello

OK, tried again to install clean. Downloaded a new floppy
image for PCMCIA. Fired up the cable modem and did a ftp install
from ftp.ciril.fr. The results aren't pretty.

The install itself looked like it went fine. Rebooting
after into KDE shows a bunch of broken links, absolutely horrible
looking fonts, NO MENUS. (?) (Copies of the logs on their way
to Pixel by separate mail)

Also, when it boots up TONS of errors, most with messages
about touch file - no such file or directory.

ALSO, when it boots, thinks it's mandrake 7.2 flashes
that on the screen for like 1-2 seconds.

  I'll try it again tomorrow.

PLEASE - where did anti-ailiased fonts go? HOW can
I turn them back on? The text file viewer in Konqueror is useless
on this machine without them, and web browsing isn't much better.

Vinny

here I use rieser for everything and no problems. What I whould mention is
that mandrake update would corrupt my rpm database and I would have to issue
an rpm -rebuilddb before I could install anymore rpm's. This however never
occurs when I use kpackage or gnorpm.

I'm also not sure if rpmdrake will do this as I still have not seen it
working. It segfaults consistantly on my system. Even after updateing it to
the current version every few days.

The newest ncurses package is ncurses-5.2-12mdk-src.rpm
unfortunatley no one has built an ncurses-devel package to match, you can
install ncurses-devel-5.1-8mdk-i586.rpm with --nodeps and it appears to work
fine, but it's no fun getting the dependency problem, maybe instead of
ncurses-devel-5.1-8mdk-i586.rpm requiring =5.2-12 we could throw a >= in
there ? unless someone is working on a new devel package, which would be

Yes I'm getting very similar hangs. I've been unable to locate
the problem exactly but I noticed they started happening while
using the nvidia graphics card driver (new video card) so I was
blaming that although the video itself wasn't hanging so it
didn't make sense to blame that (coincidence?). I've had a
serious reiser filesystem corruption during cooker as well
which fortunately I could sort out. These hangs still occur

OK, why not try this ...

As root, in /etc/X11,
cp X X-3
ln -s /usr/X11R6/bin/XFree86
then run /usr/X11R6/bin/xf86config and see how you go. If it doesn't
work, you can always do:
cd /etc/X11

See, the problem is I get the SAME message I got when installing 8.0 beta,
that is, when I run Dispaly config in DrakConf, it says you can use "XFree
3.3.6" or "XFree 3.3.6 with Experimental 3D Hardware acceleration" I don't
get the option to use XFree86 4.0.3 and I should, my SiS 5598 is supported

Good point to make the Eazel theme the default, much better looking than

It reminds me a thread long ago in cooker or expert list. It was something
related with an old rpm config file still lying in /etc (i think), and
not needed by newer rpm's...

Yes, I got it:
check your /etc/rpm/macros

mine is like:
%_install_langs en_US:en

but you can try to delete it completely.

I encountered that problem, apache didn't work anymore even on plain
html with the current (4.0.4pl1-3) php binaries installed. Recompiling
the php SRPM fixed the problem.

I also noticed that the following "BuildRequires" dependencies are
missing in php.spec:
db2-devel
ncurses-devel

It would be great if someone could add these dependencies and regenerate
the php RPMs. thx.

It was me (at least one). If you are short of / or /boot partitions space,
like me, just rpm -e --force grub. You can live without it.

[Cooker] LM 8.0b2 -> 2 thumbs DOWN

2001-03-29 Thread f . v .

Hi all,

sad to say that LM8.0b2 just don't want to install.
Here is the hardware configuration :
k6-2 450mhz
384mb of ram
MSI5189 mother-board
TNT1 ASUS V3300
REALTEK rtl8139
IDE CDROM, HARD-DRIVE

The error message I get in any test I've done :
"Seems like merrory is missing"
And the install stop.
I tried to install as expert, as recommended too.
For "recommended" case : the crash appear while the install was copying rpm.
For "expert" case : the crash appear while I was choosing rpm to be installed.

Hope this help.

I don't think so. I'm using 2.5.2p2 for client, and 3 different server

Well... I want to suppose that not all Mandrake users are System Admin. This
is a pb concerning ONLY the client, for I cannot change nothing on

I disagree. All the Mandrake tools should be named DrakeXY IMHO. This
would make very clear that this is a Mandrake tool, and would also allow
easy finding of the tools on the CLI. Just type Drake and you'll
see a list of all the Drake tools available.

Something I don't like about the way you write - you try to press you're
opinions on others. Sorry to say this, but I don't know - somehow all
you're kewlness makes your texts hard to read. I'm not attacking you
now: For this reason, it seems like you're a 12 year old who doesn't know
how to write (somewhat) correctly. Again: Don't take it personally, it's
not meant that way.

Maybe you're a little, naah, a lot too late. Mandrake 8.0 is already at
Beta 2, and I doubt that the Mandrake guys will do such a drastic move at
such a late stage...

Hmmm maybe you're true. But seems the ONLY conflict comes from this
README file.

Several fixes possible:
1) remove the README from packaging altogether
2) rename README to README-2.4.2-something in packaging
3) rpm -ivh --force ^_^

I get that in any window magager, even wih mandrake 7.2 / 7.1

My fix use the wheel scroll up and down like you do in the setup to
detect the mouse ( if using a wheel mouse ) I dunno if it's a mandrake
issue or what not... but it also happens on some other distro's with me.

No problems here. I've got
/dev/hda9 on / type reiserfs
/dev/md1 on /home type ext2
/dev/md2 on /usr type reiserfs
/dev/hde11 on /mnt/cooker type ext2

My kernel is usually the latest -ac, not the official cooker one. The reiserfs
partitions use 3.6 fs format with r5 hash and I'm doing a nightly
'rsync ... && rpm -Fvh /mnt/cooker/Mandrake/RPMS/*', that has not hung so far.

Hello guys,

I´m new to posting on this list, but I´ve been following it for a while now.
My name is Roland and I have some basic knowledge on linux. I really
do like the Mandrake distribution and would like to conribute as much
as I can.

I´ve had about same problem with reiserfs partitions, which startet to occur
after a kernel update to 20mdk. with 15mdk everything was alright.
the problems with my mashine did not only concern upgrading an libs,
but especially large files froze my mashine. a 700 mb file even froze it to
death.

a warning:
nobody try the reiserfsck --rebuild-tree on this. (well I tried ;-)
the current version is definitely not safe and shredders your partition (was it built
with gcc 296 ??). it did just stop at some point without error message.

maybe those suse patches that were included in kernel ??

Roland

I had a system with only reiserfs partitions and experienced the same kind of
problems. I completly reinstalled it with ext2 partitions.

Actually, I tried reiserfsck before that, but I never could recover the file
system corruptions.

For example, the mtab file would always contain twice the same line.
I remember seing an out of memory kernel message.

I also had these freezes with rpm (installing several packages at a time), so
I am not sure which of rpm or reiserfs is the real responsible.

Good luck,

Well, it seems Mozilla folks have not done a perfect release in 0.8.1..

That's why we'll be releasing Mozilla 0.8 with LM 8.0 (but 0.8.1 will
still be in cooker)..

For people testing frozen 8.0, please, uninstall mozilla and re-install
latest mozilla package from frozen (0.8-4mdk)..

I haven't set a serial on it because it would cause too much headache..

If Mozilla get its bugs corrected fast enough, I'll put back 0.8.1 in LM

[Cooker] Reiser FS causing Console Freeze

2001-03-29 Thread Bill Noyce

This has been confusing me like hell..

I'm putting the cooker on a Dell Inspiron 8000.

I had setup a system:

/ = ext2
/usr = reiserfs
/home = reiserfs

I was getting a weird problem. During random disk activity. e.g. installing
rpm updates. The rpm process would freeze, but not the computer or X desktop.
But I could no longer do anything that needed to talk to the filesystem. I
thought it was disk related. I could call a system shutdown, if there was a
spare console open, and it would display the shutdown broadcast, but nothing
would get killed.

So I reinstalled with just one reiserfs:

/ = ext2
/home = reiserfs

And I've just had the same things happen. But this time I was able to put the
finger on the /home Reiser Partition, as I could do everything, except
operate on the /home partition.

I've now umounted /home and wait to hear if this is just my system that has
problems with ReiserFS or if everyone is avoiding it?

Can I be of any help debugging this problem?

Rgds,

Billus.

[Cooker] Last night - install

2001-03-29 Thread Vincent Meyer

Hello,

Last night ftp install with PCMCIA image. Went well, only
a couple of very minor issues.

Message when loading modules for starting the card services
said that card services did not match kernel. Still worked though.

Bad packages - Drakconfig and Abisuite, which loaded fine
after install, no problem.

Why is Tetex not on the package listing? All of it's
accessories are. Last install was included by default, and it
isn't small! Is this un-selectable now somehow?

It seems that the anti-ailiasing is now off by default?
How can this be turned on? I LIKE the anti-ailiasing. Isn't
obvious how to do this from the KDE menues. Didn't see a way
to do this in Drakconfig. Should the choice of how to do this
be part of the installation?

In no way was I trying to make you feel like an idiot. I just knew that those
files worked as I am using them myself on the latest mdk kernel. Sometimes
you download a bad src.rpm with dependency problems, so I thought I would at
least give you another option.

My two cents...

It's great that Mandrake is pentium optimized. But, for a user point of
wiev:

I need just one window manager and one desktop. Just _one_.
I'd like to set up things with tools that have exactly the same look and
feel.

We have a great environment (libralies, tools etc) that are free, and they
work
wery well. Those tools are KDE libraries and KDE Control Center.

If most people were working for the same goal, maybe we could beat Win in
issues of GUI simplicity etc. There is no use trying to reinvent the wheel.

I'd also like to set up a keyboard shortcut for launching an application in
KDE.
Mandrake should not try to use Menudrake, since it does not work OK.

What about "free" in sense of freedom of speech?
