Is this just good mental health, or are parents abdicating responsibility and, as one critic complains, 'outsourcing the management' of their children's personalities? LEAH McLAREN The Globe and Mail Saturday, May 27, 2000 The first time I sat in a therapist's office, I was 7. My parents were getting divorced, and they wanted to make sure this wouldn't turn my little sister and I into pregnant, speedfreak teens. The therapist had a bad perm and a goopy-lipstick smile. She ushered us in, instructed us to sit on a love seat surrounded by potted fronds, and reassured us (unnecessarily) that our parents loved us and that nothing -- absolutely nothing -- was our fault. Today, in my 20s, I've noticed that most of my friends my age have been in therapy at one point or another. Some of us were coerced; others went willingly, even eagerly. One thing is certain: Spending a few sessions on the proverbial couch has become as common an experience among middle-class urban and suburban kids as summer camp or tap-dance lessons. Middle-aged writer Joan Acocella recently said in The New Yorker that for her generation, "Psychotherapy is not so much an issue as a history. A language in which they learned to speak of themselves and of life." If therapy is a language for the baby boomers, it has become a way of life for many of their children, millions of whom were passed from child psychologists to adolescent specialists to university mental health clinics throughout the 1980s and 1990s. Whenever I consider my generation, I think of a T.S. Eliot line: "The whole earth is our hospital." Emily Fox Gordon agrees. "It's as if therapy has become the new institution that structures family," the author of the new, acclaimed memoir Mocking Bird Years: A Life in and Out of Therapy suggested to me. And she takes a harsh view of it. "It takes away authority from the parent and ends up infantalizing everybody." The numbers are startling. A recent Statistics Canada survey found that in the past five years, children and young adults aged 12 to 24 have been more likely to be treated for depression than any other age group. From 1994 to 1995, for instance, Canadians aged 15 were twice as likely as their 45-year-old counterparts to report having experienced a depressive episode in the previous 12 months. StatsCan also found that those identified with depression in the youngest age group are much more likely to have future depressive episodes. Strangely, this pattern is the reverse of decades past, when depression was prevalent mostly among older adults. The study goes on to suggest that the statistical shift occurred in the late 1970s -- around the time the my generation was entering kindergarten. And the field of psychology expanded to accommodate our growing melancholia. (The number of licensed psychologists jumped 52 per cent in Canada between 1982 and 1997.) During my teens, I watched dozens of my peers drift in and out of therapy. Eating disorders were rampant at my Toronto high school. We used to joke that Anorexia/Bulimia 101 was a compulsory course. It was not this way everywhere. Clare Bergman, a 27-year-old Internet consultant living in New York City, tells the story of seeing a therapist about her bulimia during a year she spent in France as a high-school student. "It was ridiculous," she remembered. "This therapist thought I had indigestion. I had to explain to her five times, in French, that I was sticking my fingers down my throat and making myself throw up. France and eating disorders do not go hand in hand." But in North America, by the time I hit university, Prozac had become a ubiquitous presence on campus. The mental-health clinics at both schools I attended had waiting lists weeks long. The therapist I saw in first year was so overworked she forgot my name after six months of weekly appointments. Once I accidentally went on a date with a guy who had the same shrink as me. Friends in their late teens signed up for couples therapy with their steady boyfriends or girlfriends when things got rocky. A small handful of the seriously depressed checked into clinics. Old friends from my year in high school bumped into each other in the hall of a mental hospital. For the most part, I am describing a group of young people suffering not serious chemical imbalances, but the normal pangs of being human. Our teen angst, childhood shyness and academic anxieties have been pathologized by a therapy-obsessed culture. It's made us an overly neurotic and inward-looking generation. The solution? More therapy of course. Gordon's memoir is a cautionary tale of the potential dangers of growing up under the lens of psychoanalysis. And let us try and understand, that one of the lessons of life is to have to deal with our frustrations. Remember a good man, paraphrasing many who came before, said "Do unto others, as you would do unto them." NOT Expect from others what you would do to them. And besides that there is the frustrations of an email list and when a person is gone for awhile they can stack up and I am sure that we all have our own troubs with keeping up with the volumes of info here and from others sources. Ya know, ya start reading emails and you may read something and go off the handle and send out some %^*( and then read down farther where there was a typo of something like a not or something being in. There are countless ways for misunderstandings to be arrived at. Part of the "blame" for the latest squabbles are mine for not announcing Mike's new role as an editor. With Goats work taken much of his time and others being gone CTRL does need "fodder" for its mill. I am getting busier and busier with things, I had asked a couple of times and Mike had answered. He has been on the list for many years and we may not agree on all things - but then that is not a prerequisite. Well, enough already, I must go Happy Holidays. Lee Thursday, May 25, 2000 Comments: 88 posts In March of this year, on the 62nd anniversary of Nazi Germany's annexation of Austria, several hundred neo-Nazis paraded through a Turkish neighborhood in Berlin, shouting anti-foreigner, anti-European and anti-Semitic slogans. They also sang the banned ultra-nationalist verses of the German national anthem at a rally organized by the National Democratic Party (NPD), the most radical of several German far-right political parties. The NPD called for the demonstration to show its support for Joerg Haider, the charismatic fuehrer of the Austrian Freedom party, a party that had recently entered that country's national governing coalition. Compared to Haider's suit-and-tie fascism, the German NPD represents a much rougher brand of extremism. Several NPD leaders have served -- or are currently doing -- jail time for denying the Holocaust. The NPD's closest U.S. ally is Dr. William Pierce, author of the notorious hate novel, The Turner Diaries, which the FBI has called "the blueprint for the Oklahoma City bombing." Last year, Pierce traveled to Germany to attend the NPD's national convention. While NPD candidates have won a few local council seats in Brandenburg and Saxony, the party's involvement in electoral politics primarily functions as a legal cover for grass-roots neo-Nazi cadre-building -- with an emphasis on direct action, street confrontations and physical attacks against immigrants and anti- fascists. NPD campaign rallies typically resemble skinhead rock concerts crammed with rowdy youth. German neo-Nazis marched through central Berlin photo The CIA's former friend On May Day, the NPD tried to take its game onto the turf of the Left by staging "pro-worker" demonstrations in several German cities, including Berlin, where the star speaker was veteran neo-Nazi agitator Friedhelm Busse. Formerly one of the youngest members of the Hitler Youth, Busse, 71, roused the crowd with anti- foreigner and anti-American vitriol that elicited loud cheers from shaven-head teenagers and 20-somethings who waved illegal imperial German black-and-white flags. Violence erupted after Busse ended his pep talk with a line from an old Nazi song: "We're marching for Hitler day and night because of the need for freedom and bread." Busse's status as an elder statesman among hard-core neo-Nazis in Germany is all the more troubling given that his checkered past includes a controversial stint with the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency.Back in the early 1950s, Busse joined the Bund Deutscher Jugend (BDJ), an elite, CIA-trained paramilitary organization composed largely of ex-Hitler Youth, Wehrmacht and SS personnel in West Germany. Busse and his fellow Bundists were primed to go underground and engage in acts of sabotage and resistance in the event of a Soviet invasion. But instead of focusing on foreign enemies, Busse's "stay behind" unit proceeded to draw up a death list that included future Chancellor Willi Brandt and other leading Social Democrats (West Germany's main opposition party), who were marked for liquidation in case of an ill-defined national security emergency. The Bund's cover was blown in October 1952, when the West German press got wind that U.S. intelligence was backing a neo-Nazi death squad. Embarrassed State Department officials, who tried to cover up the full extent of American involvement with the youth group, admitted privately that the scandal had resulted in "a serious loss of U.S. prestige." An abhorrent legacy West German "stay behind" forces quickly regrouped with a helping hand of the CIA, which recruited thousands of ex-Nazis and fascists to serve as Cold War espionage assets. "It was a visceral business of using any bastard as long as he was anti-Communist," explained Harry Rostizke, ex-head of the CIA's Soviet desk. "The eagerness to enlist collaborators meant that you didn't look at their credentials too closely." The key player on the German side of this unholy espionage alliance was Gen. Reinhard Gehlen, who served as Adolf Hitler's top anti-Soviet spy. During World War II, Gehlen was in charge of German military-intelligence operations on the eastern front. As the war drew to a close, Gehlen sensed that the United States and USSR would soon be at loggerheads. He surrendered to the Americans and touted himself as someone who could make a decisive contribution to the impending struggle against the Communists. Gehlen offered to share the vast information archive he had accumulated on the USSR. U.S. spymasters took the bait. With a mandate to continue spying on the East just as he had been doing before, Gehlen re-established his espionage network at the behest of American intelligence. 'Simultaneous' means that they all saw it at the same time, during the same event. Tell us more about this ONE event where 'thousands' at that one time saw the same thing... A few months ago, I found a really good website on satanic ritual abuse, created by Karen Jones. She says the reasons were bogus. I know that Karen had similar trouble with Michael Aquino in the past. What struck me when she told me about it was that her info on Aquino wasn't much different from other site's info on him, so I was mystified why he'd go after her so tenaciously. She's looking for anyone who would mirror any one of her pages once she has them back up again. Whitley Strieber's site put a link to her pages under "Recommended Websites." Monday, May 29 1:22 AM SGT US faces 'quite real' threat of terrorist attack: Cohen WASHINGTON, May 28 (AFP) - The United States faces a "quite real" threat of a terrorist attack on its soil with nuclear, chemical or biological arms within the next 10 years, US Secretary of Defense William Cohen warned Sunday. "The likelihood is quite real," Cohen told NBC television's "Meet the Press" program. "There is a chance it is going to happen." "The likelihood of an attack on American soil, using either a chemical or biological or, indeed, a nuclear weapon, is quite, not only possible, but probable," added the defense secretary. The warning followed a reassessment of external threats facing the United States in the post-Cold-War world conducted by the administration of President Bill Clinton. Military analysts believe that even though the collapse of the Soviet Union has left the United States the sole military superpower, it is likely to be confronted with unconventional security threats for which it may be ill-prepared. "No country is going to take us on head-on," said Cohen. "They'll look for asymmetric types of threats and attacks, for example, through the use of chemical or biological agents, through the use of cyberattacks," he explained. He said the Clinton administration was aware that about two dozen nations were developing chemical and biological weapons but did not name them. He also refused to rule out the possibility that a portable nuclear weapon could be smuggled and exploded on US territory by terrorists or hostile intelligence agents. "We know that there are many nuclear weapons, small nuclear weapons that can be transported," noted the secretary of defense, arguing that the country should prepare itself for an attack, which would involve weapons of mass destruction. Cohen said the government had already organized 27 "weapons of mass destruction civil support teams" deployed with the US National Guard around the country. This week, the US government is wrapping up a major exercise designed to ready the country for a chemical or biological attack. The 10-day drill code-named "TOPOFF" scheduled to conclude on Tuesday is being conducted in the US states of Colorado and New Hampshire and involves 27 federal agencies in addition to local emergency services, according to the Federal Emergency Management Agency. In New Hampshire, emergency teams are practicing a response to a simulated chemical weapons attack during a mass sporting event, while Colorado authorities are coping with a make-believe epidemic of "pneumonic plague" triggered by the use of biological agents. To underscore to importance the US government attaches to raising the level of preparedness, US Attorney General Janet Reno and Health and Human Services Secretary Donna Shalala are taking part in the drill along with the governors of both states. But the US government, including the Pentagon, had egg on its face last week, when the US Congress' investigative arm released a report showing that its investigators, brandishing fake law-enforcement badges and claiming they were armed had no trouble walking into 19 sensitive federal agencies. The General Accounting Office reported that its agents penetrated the Defense, State and Justice Departments and Central Intelligence Agency, as well as secured areas at two major airports using fake badges like those that can be purchased on the Internet. Cohen accepted the blame for the security breaches. "That's a deficiency on our part," he said. "It certainly is, and it takes these kinds of tests to expose those deficiencies." For Italy's elite mountain infantry regiment, this proved too much. The 116 soldiers from the Alpini unit were due to arrive at Kristiansand in Norway on Saturday for a Nato exercise. Nobody had consulted a map, however. Puzzled immigration officers at the airport of Kristianstad in Sweden watched as the troops, in their distinctive Alpine caps decorated with feathers, disembarked some 300 miles from where they should have been. "It does not seem to have occurred to anyone in the unit that Sweden is not part of Nato," the Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera commented. "Kristiansand and Kristianstad may sound remarkably similar, but that is no excuse for Italy invading Sweden in error." Kristiansand is on the southern Norwegian coast, facing Denmark, while Kristianstad is in southern Sweden, not far from Malmo. The incident comes at a particularly embarrassing time for the authorities, who are trying to counteract an "unfair and outdated" image of the Italian military as comically inept. Defence Ministry officials said that the plane had been chartered from a civil airline. The flight had "not followed the usual military procedures". A spokesman for the airline said that as there was also a Kristiansund near Trondheim in central Norway, it was not surprising that the pilot had lost his bearings. General Anselmo Donnari, the Italian military attaché in Oslo, said that the troops had eventually reached Norway "in good order", and the exercise had started as planned. 'Rogue' States: Is It Reality or Rhetoric? By Steven Mufson Washington Post Staff Writer Monday, May 29, 2000; Page A01 In North Korea, a dozen U.S. arms experts began their second annual inspection of a mysterious tunnel complex. In Moscow, Deputy Secretary of State Strobe Talbott haggled with Russian officials over amending a 28-year-old arms agreement. In Washington, Republican presidential hopeful George W. Bush made a strong pitch for a still unproven global missile defense system. And addressing graduates at the U.S. Military Academy, Vice President Gore called for a more limited missile defense. The common goal of these disparate events last week? Stopping a "rogue" state â irrational, reckless and armed with nuclear missiles capable of striking American shores. The existence of such a threat has become an article of faith, widely accepted by the Clinton administration and some of its Republican critics, but questioned by some policy experts here and by many abroad. Many U.S. policymakers warn that a rogue state â whether an isolated and paranoid North Korea, a religiously motivated Iran or a vengeful Iraq â might attack the United States even if the inevitable result would be retaliation so massive that the attacking state would be obliterated. "There are new threats in the world," said Samuel R. "Sandy" Berger, President Clinton's national security adviser. "One of those is the growing capability of North Korea and Iran, who may not be as susceptible to deterrence as the Soviet Union was." When President Clinton visits Moscow next week for his first summit meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin, rogue states will be the ghosts at the negotiating table. Fear of their still-theoretical capabilities has made winning Russia's agreement for a limited American missile defense the Clinton administration's top priority in Russia policy, overshadowing the war in Chechnya, economic reform and future NATO expansion. Yet some policy experts question the assumption that there are such irrational rogues. "The unexamined assumptions about this are extraordinary, and the biggest is the presumption that a variety of misbegotten states are not subject to the same constraints of nuclear deterrence that everybody else has been subject to," said Jonathan Pollack, an Asia specialist at the Rand Corp., a consulting firm. Robert S. Litwak, a former director for nonproliferation policy at the National Security Council, argues in a recent book that the rogue epithet "demonizes a disparate group of states" and "significantly distorts policymaking." There is ample evidence that North Korea, Iran and Iraq have sought, and may still be seeking, weapons of mass destruction and long-range missile technology. North Korea unexpectedly fired a missile over Japan in 1998, and U.N. inspectors discovered massive stockpiles of chemical and biological weapons in Iraq after the Persian Gulf War. But critics of the theory of rogue states say the allegation that these countries are irrational or suicidal is more questionable. Their leaders appear to be very concerned about self-preservation, and the United States has successfully employed diplomatic as well as military initiatives to engage or contain them. Nearly a decade after the end of the Gulf War, Iraq remains bottled up by sanctions and a steady U.S.-British bombing campaign. In the wake of electoral victories by moderates in Iran, the Clinton administration has made some conciliatory gestures to Tehran while still seeking to block technology transfers. North Korea, meanwhile, has largely complied with a 1994 agreement aimed at making sure its nuclear program is peaceful. Within the past two months, workers under the supervision of an Atlanta-based company finished putting spent fuel from a North Korean nuclear reactor into sealed canisters, bringing to roughly 8,000 the number of radioactive rods sitting under lock, key and camera in a murky pool. Only about a dozen fuel rods are missing, a U.S. official said, far short of the amount needed to build a nuclear bomb. Last week, North Korea also fulfilled a commitment to let U.S. inspectors return to the mysterious tunnel complex once suspected of concealing a nuclear weapons or missile program. And it is preparing to hold its first summit with South Korea, its longtime foe. "You speak about North Korea as an irrational country when you have been negotiating with North Korea for six years," said a European diplomat. "The 1994 agreement was a rational agreement." I saw this guy both times he was put live on MSNBC just after the raid, and he gave the same story both times -- a story that never had the INS beating him or his soundman up, never mentioned waking up outside, just saying that the front door flying open had knocked him out, so that he couldn't comment on what happened inside the house from the time the INS entered until he supposedly regained conscousness shortly after the INS. Tell us more about this ONE event where 'thousands' at that one time saw the same thing... There are many, many such events. I'm looking to have just ONE such event named, where 'thousands' of people saw something at the same time. The closest I can come up with are the Mexican and Phoenix sightings a few years ago, but in reality only a few hundred at most actually saw anything AT THE SAME TIME as others reported seeing something. There's a big difference in saying 'thousands in the Phoenix area saw strange lights on the night of...', and when investigating, find that maybe a few dozen saw something around 8pm, maybe a few hundred sighted something around 10pm, and perhaps a few hundred more saw something in the wee hours of the morning...perhaps in total a thousand or more people saw something strange that night, but never 'simultaneously'... It could be said that 'thousands' witnessed the 'Westchester Wing' which was seen in my area back in the early to mid 1980s...but in fact, at most it could only be a thousand or so IN TOTAL...and never at the same time... They do not, however, prove an ET origin for what these people saw. There are a number of equally plausible alternative explanations. Or equally implausible. All we know is that relatively reliable people report seeing -- and in some cases, experiencing -- strange things. But we have no way of knowing the true nature of these events, and one should take what the supposed instigators of such events (e.g., 'aliens') claim to be 'the truth' with a grain of salt. Although not categorically proven, "strong presumptions exist in its favor and if it is correct, it is loaded with significant consequences." ' "Could be the work of...", is hardly a statement of uncategorical belief. Even "...and that, in fact, the best expalantion..." does not mean that it is the ONLY explanation. "Although not categorically proven, 'strong presumptions exist'..." again is hardly a statement of uncategorical belief. Quite frankly, I see little difference between this article, and what one can find any week in The Star, The Weekly World News, The Globe, or any other supermarket tabloid. The reporter never mentions his or her source for this, and since I doubt the reporter is fluent in French, the reporter would need to have someone else's translation of this report. We aren't shown that Reporter Kean even tried to do the modicum of work a reporter worth the name should have done. Did Kean try to reach any of these French officials for a direct quote? Or did Reporter Kean unthinkingly accept something off of the wire service, a report that could be a deliberate planting of disinformation? We don't know, because Reporter Kean obviously did nothing more that put his or her name on a 'canned' report off of a wire service, else there would be a mention of Kean's actually conversing with anyone who is quoted in the article. The research, which is the result of a three-year study at the University of Jena in Germany, supports environmentalists' warnings and raises the possibility that people who eat GM foods may also be affected. Beatrix Tappesser from the Ecology Institute in Freiburg said: "This is very alarming because it shows that the cross-over of genes takes place on a greater scale than we had previously assumed. "The results indicate that we must assume that changes take place in the intestinal tubes of people and animals. The crossover of microorganisms takes place and people's make up in terms of micro-organisms in their intestinal tract is changed. This can therefore have health consequences." The research - which has found that bees take up engineered genes from oilseed rape - will dramatically increase pressure on farmers and ministers to destroy the crop accidentally sown over thousands of acres of Britain. Yesterday, Nick Brown, the Agriculture Minister, in an emergency announcement, advised farmers to plough in the crop at a cost estimated by the National Farmers' Union at 3m. While this represented a sharp U-turn from his previous denials that such action would be necessary, he admitted he had no legal authority to order them to do so. Mr Brown said they had the alternative option of harvesting the crop and trying to sell it outside Europe, although it was unclear whether the law allows them to do that. He ruled out any government compensation for the farmers, although the food industry has now made it clear that they will not buy any of the crop. He said that farmers should instead seek redress from Advanta, the company who sold them the GM contaminated seed. The new research about GM genes infecting other forms of life seriously undermines assertions by the biotech industry and GM supporters that the genes cannot spread and is being taken "very seriously" by the German health ministry. Professor Hans-Heinrich Kaatz of Jena's authoritative Bee Institute released the insects onto a crop of genetically modified rape and removed the pollen they gathered when they returned to the hive. He fed the pollen to young bees, and when he analysed the bacteria in their guts found that they had taken up the same modified genes. He told the German television station ZDF: "They had obviously taken up these genes. They were in the bacteria in the intestinal tract of the bees and seemed to have come from the genes of the original plant and to have been taken up into their own genetic make-up." Ulrike Riedel of the German Health Ministry said that the experiment should be taken "very seriously". She added: "This kind of study is a good reason why we should not assume that everything is OK." It can be learned, though, and what better place to learn than the internet. On the internet those who don't consense can simply leave and go start their own list. More importantly, the consensus building process can take place including people who hate each other and would very quickly commence whacking each other upside the head with bar stools pool cues were they meeting in person. This is way cool. It's a quantum leap in human political relationships. Hurrah for technology. The input by certain people here regarding the issue of posting limits is wholly appropriate. Bealle, a former city editor of the old Washington Times and Herald, was running a county seat newspaper, in which the local power company bought a large advertisment every week. But according to Bealle' s own story, one day the paper took up the cudgels for some of its readers that were being given poor service from the power company, and Morris Bealle received the dressing down of his life from the advertising agency which handled the power company' s account. They told him that any more such 'stepping out of line' would result in the immediate cancellation not only of the advertising contract, but also of the gas company and the telephone company. That' s when Bealle' s eyes were opened to the meaning of a 'free press', and he decided to get out of the newspaper business. He could afford to do that because he belonged to the landed gentry of Maryland, but not all newspaper editors are that lucky. Bealle used his professional experience to do some deep digging into the freedom-of-the-press situation and came up with two shattering exposes - 'The Drug Story', and 'The House of Rockefeller.' The fact that in spite of his familiarity with the editorial world and many important personal contacts he couldn't get his revelations into print until he founded his own company, The Columbia Publishing House, Washington D.C., in 1949, was just a prime example of the silent but adamant censorship in force in 'the Land of the Free and the Home of the Brave'. Although The Drug Story is one of the most important books on health and politics ever to appear in the USA, it has never been admitted to a major bookstore nor reviewed by any establishment paper, and was sold exclusively by mail. On the other hand, the Libyians almost certainly didn't do it. FWIW, I interviewed Bobbie Riconosciuto a few years ago and she talked a little about Lockerbie. Bobbie is the wife of Inslaw case figure Michael Riconosciuto, a man whose name should be familiar to any serious concpiracy buff. Opinions vary as to who and what Michael Riconosciuto is. He's been called an intelligence operative, a computer wiz, a drug dealer and a pathological liar. He was one of the last people to ever speak with Danny Casolaro. He claims to have warned him. Here's what his wife said about Pan Am 103: (snip) Bobbie: Well, I didn't know all of what they were doing. You know, Michael would tell me things off the cuff, you know. I think when it finally hit home was when Pan Am 103 went down. I listened to the news . . . Michael had come home; he'd been home maybe three hours. And he hadn't been home in a couple of weeks. And he was just being . . . he had just gone to bed. I was listening to the news and they were talking about this plane going down over Lockerbie and the fact that the CIA station boss from Beirut was on the plane and you know, I'm uh, sitting there thinking, "Wake him up or not? This affluent, wealthy, and influential member of the "liberal" elite says that people should not be allowed to own handguns, but, when she was threatened many years ago, she bought a pistol and got a permit to carry it in California. What she obviously means is that the little people- people who are not wealthy and influential Senators like herself- should not have the right to protect themselves from violent crime. This individual does not think that ordinary citizens can be trusted with guns, but she set a very bad example at a press conference. According to columnist Jill Labbe's column, "Guns nowhere as dangerous as liberals who can't handle them": "There stood Dianne Feinstein, the anti-gun senator from California, posing for all the nation's media to capture on Kodachrome, holding an AK-47 with her finger firmly planted on the trigger." "Here's a woman so concerned about the supposed recklessness of gun manufacturers that she's calling for a ban on high-capacity ammunition magazines- the justification being little more than anecdotal evidence- who wouldn't know firearm safety if it bit her on the end of her upturned San Franciscan nose."Labbe rightly points out Ms. Feinstein's violation of the rules of safe firearm handling. Any military person or police officer (along with millions of responsible civilian firearm owners), will tell you, "Never put your finger inside the trigger guard unless you want to fire the weapon." Labbe also points out that the AK-47's muzzle was probably pointed at one or more of the people in the crowd around Senator Feinstein. The gun was, of course, unloaded, and it may even have been rendered incapable of firing under any circumstances- but again, those responsible firearm owners will tell you, "Always treat a gun as if it's loaded. Always. Never point a gun at anyone or anything you wouldn't want to shoot. Never." While high-tech breakthroughs make business more productive and life more pleasant, progress also has a dark side. Technology designed for benign purposes can be used for ill ones too. The Clinton administration has led the way, acting as if every new computer and telephone should have a welcome mat for federal wiretappers. A 1998 American Civil Liberties Union report noted, "The Administration is using scare tactics to acquire vast new powers to spy on all Americans." On April 16, 1993, the White House revealed that the National Security Agency had secretly developed a new microchip known as the Clipper Chip. The press release called it "a new initiative that will bring the Federal Government together with industry in a voluntary program to improve the security and privacy of telephone communications while meeting the legitimate needs of law enforcement." This was practically the last time that the word "voluntary" was mentioned. The Clipper Chip's developers presumed it should be a crime for anyone to use technology--such as encryption--that frustrates government agents. Encryption software allows individuals to send messages between computers that cannot be read by third parties. It is vital to prevent fraud or abuse of financial transactions and is widely used both here and abroad. Encryption has a long history--Thomas Jefferson used secret codes in his correspondence to avoid detection by the British. "The Clipper Chip proposal would have required every encryption user (that is, every individual or business using a digital telephone system, fax machine, the Internet, etc.) to hand over their decryption keys to the government, giving it access to both stored data and real-time communications," the ACLU noted. Marc Rotenberg, director of the Electronic Privacy Information Center, observed: "You don't want to buy a set of car keys from a guy who specializes in stealing cars." When the federal National Institute of Standards and Technology formally published the proposal for the new surveillance chip, fewer than one percent of the comments received from the public supported the Clipper Chip plan. Although it eventually abandoned its effort to impose the Clipper Chip, the administration did not give up on trying to tap the nation's telephones. In 1994 it railroaded through Congress a law to dumb down phone technology in order to facilitate government wiretapping. On October 16, 1995, the telecommunications industry was stunned when a Federal Register notice appeared announcing that the FBI was demanding that phone companies provide the capability for simultaneous wiretaps of one out of every hundred phone calls in urban areas. The FBI notice represented "a 1,000-fold increase over previous levels of surveillance." FBI Director Louis Freeh denied that any expansion of wiretapping was planned. The 1994 Communications Assistance for Law Enforcement law led to five years of clashes between the FBI and the communications industry over the new standards. The Federal Communications Commission was the bill's designated arbiter; in August 1999, the FCC caved and gave the FBI almost everything it wanted. The FCC ordered that all new cellular telephones become de facto homing devices for law enforcement by including components which enable law enforcement to determine the precise location from which a person is calling. As Electronic Design magazine noted, "Unlike the location feature being created for 911 emergency services, this capability will apply to all calls and users won't be able to turn it off." With the onset of the McCarthy era 50 years ago, any perceived threat to
U.S. sovereignty from the British Round Table and its American branch
shifted to an obsession with the Soviet Union. Roy Cohn, who was legal
counsel to Sen. Joseph McCarthy during the anti-Communist Senate
investigations of the 1950s, would later become a member of the John Birch
Society and a principle figure in the JBS intelligence gathering operation,
the Western Goals Foundation. Out of the latter emerged the core group
which, in 1981, formed the present Council for National Policy -- a
consortium of high level political, corporate and evangelical leaders which
is the primary coordinating body and funding conduit for Christian Right
projects.
Sara Diamond's book, Roads to Dominion: Right-Wing Movements and Political
Power in the United States, notes:"Before and after the formation of the
John Birch Society, corporations played a major role in rallying the public
to the anticommunist cause." 1. In 1947, the Taft-Hartley Act granted
corporations the right to distribute literature to counter labor union
organizing -- a movement they blamed on the communists. To reduce the cost
of producing and distributing anti-Communist materials, corporations turned
to non-profit organizations such as the JBS.
By 1963, corporations were spending an estimated $25 million per year on
anticommunist literature... Some corporations circulated print and

Anti-Masons seem to be willing speakers when there's a "free-will donation"
and their 'pitch' is often the same time after time.
For several years, U.S. anti-Masons have made much of their "Missions to
Masons" conferences. Seemingly strong on hype prior to the event, these
activities have been the subject of interest amongst Masons who wonder why
someone would need/want to 'minister' to them. Here's a report from a Mason
about his attendance at such a meeting in 1998.

A Visit to a "Ministry to Masons" Conference

"On Saturday, 8 August 1998, I went to a "Ministry to Masons" Conference in
Indianapolis to experience firsthand their assaults on Freemasonry. It
wasn't a pretty sight. These folks are serious.
My Arrival
Upon arriving I noted there were no conference signs anywhere. Only the
motel's directory board indicated that the conference was there.
I was warmly greeted at the sign-in desk in the motel ballroom (the main
room for the conference). Around the rear of the ballroom were several
tables where anti-Masonic books, pamphlets, audio tapes, and video tapes
were being sold by anti-Masonic ministries. There were also many free
handouts and some donation containers. Leo Taxil's hoax about Freemasonry
and Baphomet (the alleged satanic god of Freemasonry) was very present and
being treated as fact. The speaker at that time was expounding on the
growing evil influence of Freemasonry within the Anglican church.
Attendees
There were 53 attendees by my count (the conference was set up to
accommodate 200 persons). They were a varied lot, mostly middle-aged and
older. Most of the ones I talked with seemed to be pleasant, likable people.
Some had come quite a distance. One lady came from Maryland (she said she
was attending because of bad experiences with her husband being a Mason).
One attendee had at least 16 Masonic and anti-Masonic books stacked in front
of him on his table.
Many Bibles in various sizes were present, some with fancy covers, some with
yellow highlighting of passages, all of them showing signs of much use.
Dave Carrico
Dave Carrico (of the Followers of Christ ministry) gave a presentation
titled "Freemasonry: Satan's Wellspring of Paganism." He began by saying
that the conference was foretold in Solomon 6:11 ("I went down into the
garden of nuts..."). He then expounded on how Freemasonry had developed from
ancient Egypt to the first Masonic grand lodge in 1717 and how the Kaballah
and Rosicrucianism were involved. His primary slide (the one he kept going
back to) had "Freemasonry 1717" at the top in big red letters, "Antichrist"
at the bottom (in big red letters), and five philosophical/historical links
between them. These alleged "links" had things such as the Nazi party
(Hitler gained power supposedly because of certain Masonic connections),
O.T.O., The Order of the Golden Dawn, Rosicrucianism, the Theospohical
Society with Blavatsky and Leadbetter, Anton Levay and the Church of Satan,
and so on.
Playing on Taxil's lie that Albert Pike had said Lucifer was the god of
Freemasonry, Carrico expounded on scripture regarding the fall of Lucifer
and on the basic teachings of Satan. He also spent some time on Eliphas
Levi, Leadbetter, Manley P. Hall (supposedly he was the "greatest
philosopher of Freemasonry"), and three "infamous" Humanist Masons: Jacques
Casanova, Voltaire, and Freidrich Nietzche.
Carrico then went into Masonic symbols, saying they are on Mormon underwear,
and the slanted multi-armed cross symbol of the 33° Mason was the sign of
Baphomet (he showed a picture of R.W. Bro. Kleinknecht, S.G.C. of A.A.S.R.,
S.J., as an illustration). Carrico went on to say that because the hand at
the end of a sword that is in the 33° emblem was just like the right hand of
Baphomet in a picture (taken from the illustration on the cover of Leo
Taxil's false exposé of Freemasonry), the 33° was satanic. He was serious
when he said these things! What worries me is that probably all the
attendees believed him, accepting without question what he said.
Something that told me a lot about Carrico and others present came at the
end of his presentation: he ridiculed an interfaith rally recently held in
Indianapolis in memory of the 22 people murdered in Indianapolis during the
past year. Why? Because it was an interfaith rally - it was not exclusively
Christians.
Greg Lambert
I next attended a presentation by Greg Lambert (of Advantage Ministries) on
"Masonic Symbolism." Lambert began with a

Meland With an oil glut worldwide, and resulting low gas prices here in the US, major oil companies are merging and laying off thousands of employees to remain financially healthy (in other words, to maintain high executive salaries and stock options). As a result, it is very difficult to get the American public interested in alternate fuel automobiles, specifically, cleaner, quieter and more energy efficient electric, hybrid electric, or fuel cell vehicles. Last year Ford Motor Company sold about 800,000 sport utility vehicles and canceled some of the more energy efficient lines. The primary American automotive concern, at the present, seems to be congestion, or gridlock. Fast-growing big cities like Seattle and Atlanta with little alternate transportation experience stop and go freeways. Commuters are late to work and valuable company time is wasted. And if an accident occurs on the freeway, traffic backs up for miles, adding hours instead of minutes of delay time. Frustration! Road Rage! Motorists shooting motorists! There must be a better way. The Germans seem to have one. I visited Berlin this summer where they just completed their third station, for new 150 mph ICE trains, where you can catch commuter rail or the underground to almost any spot in the city. Very few US cities offer alternatives such as light rail, commuter rail (trains using existing tracks), an effective bus system, or even enough parking space for the glut of private autos. Very few US commuters are aware of the physical, mental, and economic dangers due to auto congestion and tailpipe emissions. Only if air pollution alerts are issued during air stagnation conditions (extreme cases: Mexico City and recently Tehran), do most city dwellers realize their health is at risk. An air pollution threat occurs almost every time traffic is in a gridlock situation and the vehicles ahead gas the occupants behind. Feel blessed if the car in front of you is electric! Cars at idle emit two to three times as many health-damaging pollutants as at normal operating speeds. The link between diesel exhaust and cancer has already been established, and a distinct correlation exists between hospital visits due to respiratory problems and air pollution alerts. With increasing intercity pollution, US metropolitan areas will soon follow their European counterparts and create emission free zones where fossil fuel cars will be prohibited. Only electric cars, or ZEV's (zero emission vehicles), bicycles and mass transit will be allowed. Another net effect of millions of cars on the road worldwide is the constantly increasing emission of greenhouse gasses and the resulting major contribution to global warming. Such mass tailpipe emissions are threatening the planet and are a likely culprit for extreme weather patterns (severe weather) worldwide. 1998 experienced the warmest average temperatures in history. And let us not forget other harms to the environment from such as the Exxon Valdez, Scottish North Sea and Russian Arctic oil spills, and the resultant destruction of animal life and human property. A related catastrophe, the Honduras flooding, apparently resulted from severe weather and the clear cutting of rainforests. When no extensive root systems or tree structures were available to absorb the excess rain and wind, the consequence was mass destruction of public bridges, buildings, private property and human lives. Another result of the excessive self-indulgent use of oil in the US is the aggravation of trade deficits with countries like Nigeria, Mexico, Indonesia and in the Middle East. The result is a money drain from the US, meaning less commerce and less jobs. Moreover the money paid for the oil goes mostly to privileged leaders or dictators and does not trickle down to the masses. Consequently there is, in these countries, no emerging middle class to buy our goods and services-no cars, (of course they wouldn't want most of our cars because they are too big and use too much gas), computers, appliances, wheat, lumber or apples. So the US economy slows and American jobs are eliminated. Meanwhile a silent revolution has been emerging since the 70s. Hands-on engineers, electrical wizards, high school and university students have used standard power electronics to revive the electric car, that lost out to Henry Ford and Standard Oil in the early 1900s. Spurred on by the Oil Crisis of the mid 70s, electric cars, mainly conversions, started reappearing. Most EV converters wanted better range. The followers of Nikola Tesla started researching his work to discover how he managed to power his own electric car to great distances on a single charge. Of the 40,000 Serbs who used to live in Pristina before KFOR and UNMIK came to Kosovo and Metohija, 25,000 were school and university students. Today, only 35 Serbian schoolchildren live in Pristina and attend classes in the local school in the village of Laplje; -Prizren (only 100 Serbian families remain); - Gnjilane, the situation in this town was alarming in March and April (in this period alone 350 houses of Serbs were sold). The number of remaining Serbs has been halved and today only about 1,500 Serbs remain. Once all the cargo in containers was poured into the Kosovo swamps, all of a sudden the US troops stopped further construction of their "Bondstill" (sp?) military base. [Recall that] NATO [also] used the ammunition containing depleted uranium against the Bosnian Serbs [back in 1995]. Some 30 tons of 30-millimeter projectiles were fired back then. After that, over 4,500 residents of [Sarajevo suburb] Hadzici were resettled in the town of Bratunac [in eastern Bosnia; Hadzici were given to the Croat-Muslim Federation at Dayton]. The (former) residents of Hadzici were particularly exposed to DU. Consequences: some 250 of the natives of Hadzici have already died and are buried at the Bratunac cemetery. Most of these people were young people, who died 'suddenly' and from an 'unknown disease'. Author: Dragoljub Gajevic The submarines of the US Navy brought dozens of containers to the Albanian port of Semani (sp?). The operation was carried out quickly and quietly, and the secret was the actual content of these containers. The "special cargo" was then delivered to Tirana with the US cargo helicopters, and was then kept until September 3, according to the "SVEDOK" source. The final destination was [allegedly] Kosovo. So, the containers were subsequently transported from Tirana to Kosovo, to an undisclosed location about 35 kilometers (22 miles) south of Pristina. The convoy of containers was accompanied by a sizable security personnel. At about the same time, the US troops presumably started building a major military base in vicinity of Urosevac. This powerful military base, named "Bondstill", was considered to be an American response to the prior Russian challenge in Kosovo, namely the sudden and unexpected takeover of the Slatina [military] airport. Thus the US military camp near Urosevac soon became a major construction site. It turned out, however, that what the Americans were building near Urosevac was not any old military base. The source of the "SVEDOK" newspaper testifies that the US troops have drilled big craters, and then "special cargo" was poured into the craters. The cargo arrived from Tirana [the Albanian capital], and, once filled, the craters were cemented on the top. As if they "forgot" that Bondstill was originally meant to be the largest US military base in the Balkans. The official Washington kept the whole nuclear waste affair secret, and did not even notify its European allies of it. For that reason, nobody other than the Americans was allowed anywhere near Bondstill - not even the KFOR troops that are from other NATO nations. However, the [alleged] true purpose of the Bondstill base was soon uncovered. Ant this true purpose certainly was not simply to build a fancy (and costly) military base relatively close to [the Kosovo capital] Pristina. Instead, Kosovo turned out to be a convenient location for (meant to be secretful) deposit of the US nuclear waste. "Svedok" has learned that at least 150 tons of (US-produced) nuclear waste. The Pentagon's expenses for this operation were estimated around US$ 70 million. Thus an already dire ecological situation in Kosovo has been made even worse. Namely, NATO already admitted to have fired some 10,000 30-millimeter projectiles containing depleted uranium. These DU projectiles were fired by the A-10A "Thunderbold" combat aircraft. This corresponds to about 30 tons of depleted uranium throughout Kosovo. The radioactive waste [in the form of DU] is causing cancer and very harmful for the civilian population as well as the soldiers exposed to it. It is believed that it is DU that is behind the so-called "Gulf Syndrome". Unfortunately, Kosovo is not the first " testing ground" for DU, and where [in addition to the local civilian population] the American soldiers were used as the "experimental rabbits" by their own government and the US military-industrial complex. Abstract:
It is frequently assumed that safe storage gun laws reduce accidental gun
deaths and total suicides, while the possible impact on crime rates are
ignored. However, given existing work on the adverse impact of other safety
laws, such as safety caps for storing medicine, even the very plausible
assumption of reduced accidental gun deaths cannot be taken for granted. Our
paper analyzes both state and county data spanning nearly twenty years, and we
find no support that safe storage laws reduce either juvenile accidental gun
deaths or suicides. Instead, these storage requirements appear to impair
peoples ability to use guns defensively. Because accidental shooters also tend
to be the ones most likely to violate the new law, safe storage laws increase
violent and property crimes against low risk citizens with no observable
offsetting benefit in terms of reduced accidents or suicides. During the first
five full years after the passage of the safe storage laws, the group of
fifteen states that adopted these laws faced an annual average increase of over
300 more murders, 3,860 more rapes, 24,650 more robberies, and over 25,000 more
aggravated assaults. On average, the annual costs borne by victims averaged
over $2.6 billion as a result of lost productivity, out-of-pocket expenses,
medical bills, and property losses.

From http://www.lewrockwell.com/sobran/sobran66.html }}Begin Imperfect Contrition by Joseph Sobran The Popes recent "apology" for the sins of Catholics seems to be having the direct opposite of the effect he intended. There must be a way to oppose anti- Semitism without fostering anti-Catholicism. Catholics should, and do, regret many things their ancestors have done over the centuries. But our forebears including Popes have to do their own repenting, just as we do. Their sins are not necessarily ours, and their offenses against non-Catholics, however deplorable by todays standards, werent necessarily sins in their own minds. In the Middle Ages and long afterward, just about everyone regarded atheism, heresy, and apostasy as criminal; rulers were expected, as a matter of course, to protect the religion of the community. The "great religions," as we now call them, regarded each other as enemies Gods enemies not as brothers under the skin or valid alternative lifestyles. The New Testament condemns "those of the synagogue of Satan, who say they are Jews and are not"; these words and others like them are ascribed to Christ, who apparently said nothing about "pluralism," "tolerance," "dialogue," or "the Judaeo-Christian tradition." The Jews are bluntly accused of crucifying Christ and persecuting Christians, and are warned that they must repent and convert. The Talmud is no more ecumenical, condemning all gentiles and Christians in particular, with obscene curses against Christ and the Blessed Virgin. Islam merely brought another fighting faith into the world, which sought to impose itself wherever it could: that, everyone agreed in principle, was what the True Religion was supposed to do. Immortal souls were at stake. Of course persuasion was the ideal, but, since human nature was obstinate, force was sometimes necessary. The early Protestants saw it the same way and acted accordingly. Is the Pope "repenting" because twelfth-century men werent twentieth-century men? (As if we can safely assume that that would have been an improvement.) And his penitence seems to extend only to those putative sins that the twentieth century condemns, ignoring all manner of other things that are sinful by traditional Catholic standards. This is very much in the spirit of modern man, who condemns earlier generations for not having been modern men. So the papal statement, far from correcting the sins of the modern world, had the effect of seeming to justify every modern prejudice against Catholicism. Of course the Pope distinguished carefully between the Church as the Mystical Body of Christ, which can never sin, and the Church as a human institution. But since only Catholics accept this distinction anyone who does accept it is almost by definition a believing Catholic the qualification seemed Pickwickian to non-Catholics, who generally took the view that the Catholic Church had finally, belatedly, though imperfectly, admitted that it is, after all, the source of most of the great evils of history. In short, the Pope seemed to be validating every familiar anti-Catholic canard. Even ordinary Catholics of this generation, who are woefully weak in theological and historical understanding (a fact for which the hierarchy of todays Church really should repent), took the impression that the modern calumnies must be true after all. Since John Paul II is a man of considerable intellect and diplomatic skill, its amazing that he didnt foresee this natural and predictable interpretation of his gesture. His successors will have a lot of explaining to do. The reaction was fascinating. To a purely rational unbeliever, it might be as if the current mayor of Athens had apologized for the execution of Socrates, or as if the House of Windsor had apologized for the depredations of Henry VIII (without, however, offering to return Englands great cathedrals to the Church of Rome). How can people who reject the concept of apostolic succession the principle that the Church inherits the authority of Christ believe that todays Church can inherit guilt from the medieval Church? And if guilt is hereditary, why not also blame todays Jews for the Crucifixion? Can we now expect rabbis to apologize for the role of Jews in Communism and for their own "silence" during Soviet mass murders of Christians? There are interesting possibilities here. And does todays Church get credit for creating Western civilization? Or is her uniquely continuous moral identity over two millennia recognized only for the purpose of heaping accusations on her? For whatever reason, everyone seemed to assume that the present Pope could somehow take responsibility for all the sins of Catholics throughout history, should take responsibility for them, and yet had failed to do so adequately. My name is Alan Stang. I am the author of ten books, three of which the Society published via Western Islands. One of them was It's Very Simple: The True Story of Civil Rights, a best-seller Bob Welch asked me to write. Another was The Highest Virtue, a novel that won rave reviews in the Los Angeles Times, the Orange County Register and five stars--top rating--from the West Coast Review of Books. Here's a letter about it, from Ned Dunn, a member of the Council of JBS. I was one of Mike Wallace's original writers. I have been a network radio talk show host. I went head to head with Larry King in Los Angeles, and, according to Arbitron, had almost twice as many listeners. I wrote my first article for American Opinion in April, 1963. That magazine was of course the predecessor of The New American, and that article began my long association with the John Birch Society. For many years, my wife and I were Life Members. An article by me appeared in every issue of American Opinion for the last 15 years of its life, with a single exception--when Managing Editor Scott Stanley asked for a piece on the sex lives of the Kennedys. Editor Stanley apparently didn't fully realize what the sex lives of the Kennedys were. When he found out, he pulled the piece, but the information therein later showed up in other pieces in the magazine. Here is a fan letter I received from Elizabeth Linington, the best-selling novelist who wrote as Dell Shannon, Lesley Egan, and so on, and who was a member of the Society. I wrote for The Review of the News, also a predecessor of The New American. For a while, the Society syndicated my daily, national, radio news commentary, which aired in hundreds of markets. While I wrote all those articles and did the daily news commentary, I traveled regularly on speaking tours for the American Opinion Speakers Bureau, doing about three tours a year, on subjects ranging from education, to China to the treasonous surrender of our Panama Canal. Some of those trips were four, five, even six weeks long. Every summer, for many years, I spoke at the youth camps the Society conducts, either as the final, Friday-night speaker, or throughout the week. Here is a camp newspaper story about my arrival. There was also considerable travel for the magazines and to the Council meetings and dinners. To refresh your memory, I was the third penguin from the end in the back row. It is probably fair to say that I traveled nationwide for the Society on those speaking tours longer than anyone else--twenty years--which no doubt is the reason I have only five kids. Because of all that travel, I was apparently one of the few outside Birchers some people in out of the way hamlets ever saw; some of them mistakenly believed I was an important Society official. They were surprised to learn I had never even been on the staff. In one amusing contretemps, KTRH, the 50,000 watt clear-channel monster in Houston, retained me to do election night commentary. When my wife and I arrived in town, Hal Kemp, then station manager, proudly showed us the promotion he had done. It included substantial display ads in both the Houston Post and Chronicle--the biggest papers in the state--identifying me as "National Chairman" of the John Birch Society. Hal was so proud of his work, I didn't bother to explain; the damage was done. The papers were long since in the streets. Later, in his office, I told Bob Welch that, since I now was "National Chairman," I wanted higher fees. He smiled archly and replied, "Well, Alan, you're 'National Chairman.' You arrange it." Headquarters of the JBS then were located in Belmont, Massachusetts, a suburb of Boston. Bob Welch had been a student at Harvard Law School--had left when he found it overrun with Felix Frankfurter's "Happy Hot Dogs," such as Alger Hiss--and had stayed to enter the candy business and marry Marian Probert. Bob insisted that my wife and I live in the Belmont area and office at headquarters. We wanted to live there only a little more than we wanted to live in Moscow, which is also a suburb of Boston. Indeed, Texas Congressman Ron Paul, M.D., my friend for many years, once asked me in exasperation, "Alan, can you explain why the John Birch Society--which is fighting Communism--is located in Boston, of all places?" I didn't tell Ron the answers were candy and romance. But Bob insisted so strenuously, we came. For many years, his office had been on the first floor at 395 Concord Ave. When I arrived, he had moved to the second floor, for greater security, and the first floor office he had vacated was divided into two smaller offices. This sources contains historical information we have verified. These are sources that expressly speak of the matter but other sources also imply the same. We agree with British Israel in its original form. We agree with much of the historical anayses of British Israel though we have added to them and refined them. At some stage in the 1930s some British Israel writers became anti-semitic. Some also became pseudo-scientific and began accepting aspects of Biblical Criticism which is actually an anti-semitic hoax heavily influenced by a branch of German ideaology. This sickness never affected all of British-Israel's membership but some were influenced by it. 3.Ideaology. We emphasize the truth of the Bible. We utilize Jewish sources and believe in them. We consider ourselves religious Orthodox Jews and look at the subject from such a perspective. British Israel does not. We also believe we have proof that the Khazars were part of the Lost Ten Tribes. We identity certain historical peoples with the Tribes of Israel and these identifications of ours are not in about half the cases those usually accepted by British Israel. In the past some valuable research was done by British Israel writers and we still on occasion refer to their findings. British Israel today appears to emphasize political and Christian causes and is not greatly concerned with "Identity" issues. 4. Anti-semitism: We are against anti-semitism and believe that a true Israelite cannot be an antisemite though there may be exceptions in some generations. In America exist "Identity" movements which are Nazi like and probably unredeemable from our point of view. They must be considered as enemy agents which in effect they are. This Void is not surprising to those of us who have watched a quarter-century of conspiracy, assassination, character-assassination and official cover-up around the UFO question. The secret conspiracy has succeeded! Conspiracy buffs may beleive multiple theories about the Clinton impeachment, but they will not open the gates of their minds to the UFO phenomena. Hey, I'll go for it - the conspiracy to hide the ET presence is pervasive, global, and most deeply affects the human welfare. Therefore it is a proper subject for CTRL. Understand that this is a breakthrough in itself. That ET-skeptical conspiracy buffs feel they have the right to call others "kooks" "nuts" "whiners" on Internet lists because they espouse the ET hypothesis. NO MORE. (Scott Kremer) -- WHOEVER WAS TRYING TO REACH ME hung up after only two rings. But I managed to catch the 301 area code on my caller-ID screen and thought, "Carlos." Carlos was a source I'd known for almost four years. His specialty was analyzing videotapes made during the infamous 1993 Waco siege. For months he'd been calling me every week, but I hadn't heard from him lately. I dialed his office number. A strange voice answered. That had never happened before. "Is Carlos there?" I asked. "Uh, he's not . . . umm . . . available right now," the guy on the other end mumbled. "Who is this?" I said. The voice identified himself as a police sergeant. I said I was a reporter and he signed off abruptly: "I can't discuss anything with you right now." Had I had dialed into a crime scene? It figured. Things were always weird with Waco. After all these years, the surprises--and the mysteries--never seemed to end. "Give Carlos the message that I called," I told the sergeant. Carlos Ghigliotti would never get that message. He was, at that moment, deceased. The police had just discovered his corpse in an advanced state of decomposition at the office where he worked alone--Infrared Technologies Corp., on the third floor of a former bank building in downtown Laurel. It was the afternoon of April 28. A seemingly healthy man was dead at 42. Nobody had seen him in weeks; nobody had reported him missing. Police found no sign of suicide or a break-in. Citing the unusual circumstances of his death, they were investigating it as a possible homicide. Soon my phone was burning up with calls from people who knew of Ghigliotti's work on Waco and had heard he was dead. Maybe he was poisoned, some suggested, just as he was preparing to expose the whole sordid coverup. The Internet boiled over with conspiracy theories. "Carlos Ghigliotti," stated one typical message, "was a man who knew too much." On Web sites like www.freerepublic.com, his name was put on lists with others who had allegedly perished from "Arkancide"--that's what the paranoiacs called other untimely deaths they'd somehow linked to the Clinton administration. Ghigliotti, an expert in thermal imaging, was retained by the House Government Reform Committee last year to probe allegations that FBI agents--despite their vehement assertions to the contrary--had fired their weapons at members of the Branch Davidian sect, trapping helpless women and children inside the burning compound on April 19, 1993. Last fall I had quoted him in The Post as saying that infrared surveillance tapes--as well as regular videos made by the media--contained proof that the FBI fired: "The gunfire . . . is there, without a doubt." In March he was finalizing his report to Congress, and he also had been advising attorneys waging a $100 million wrongful death suit against the government on behalf of the Davidians and their heirs. "I still have a lot of shocking evidence to show you," he wrote in a March 28 letter to Michael Caddell, the lead attorney in that case. When his body was discovered, Ghigliotti's office got the scrutiny that Vince Foster's warranted after his suicide. Police sealed the premises and carted off computers and files. Rep. Dan Burton (R-Ind.), whose committee had retained Ghigliotti, called for "a full and thorough investigation." The Justice Department's special counsel on Waco, John C. Danforth, asked a federal court to take control of all evidence from Ghigliotti's firm. I'd spent hours in that workshop, reviewing tapes on his eight-monitor JVC video console, looking for evidence of government perfidy in grainy images, debating theories while his beloved cats, Simone and Sipowicz, lolled at our feet. Carlos could be exasperating--brusque, inflexible and short-tempered, a fireplug of a guy who carried himself like a street fighter--but he had a soft side. More than once he admitted to breaking down in tears while examining Waco evidence. Someone had to speak for the dead, he told me. He believed with all his heart that he had finally uncovered the Truth. "I've solved the case," he announced during one of his calls in March, urging me to come once again to his lab to review videotapes. "I know exactly what happened." But I was busy on other stories and never made it back. Now there was one more mystery to unravel: Was Carlos the final victim of Waco? Theorists and Theories In the summer of 1996, a private investigator named Gordon Novel--a thin, bearded, tightly wound character who'd been enmeshed in conspiracy investigations since the JFK assassination--brought a piece of surveillance tape to Ghigliotti's office for examination. This was back in 1990. It was a typical UFO conference â the usual mix of researchers and sheep-herders at a San Diego resort. That yearâs Alien Agenda Conference (one of Tim Beckleyâs finest) was teeming with a fresh buzz of excitement. Erik Beckjord had just cold-cocked Bill Cooper. Christa Tilton had revealed her pregnancy with an alien. And Vladimir just revealed that the Nazis had built UFOs. Conferences donât get any better. At the time, I was used to hearing foreign accents. Brits and Frenchmen in rock and roll, Germans and Chinese â even Italians with a Southern drawl â at my company, Village Labs. But there was something very strange about the way Vladimir said "meel-yunayre un vay-kashun" that made me stop and ponder. He reminded me of the TV comedian Yakov Smirnoff. Vladimir spoke with authority. He was very precise. He selected words carefully. Why was he addressing me, though? It was then when I realized that he didnât really know me from UFO-TV, or my lab work. I thought he might have wanted simply to talk to my exotic blonde friend. "So, did you hear my lecture?" he asked. "Sorry, we missed it," I replied. "Please allow us to introduce ourselves. I am Jim Dilettoso and this is Susan Gordon. And you are . . . ?" "I am so pleazeded too meat you," Vladimir replied with a conviction and warmth that belied the intellectual rigor that had been bred into the core of the Hungarianâs being. "I am scientist from Russian Academy of Sciences. Do you have UFO video we can trade?" I let him know that I wasnât there actually speaking this time, that my band, UFAUX, was performing at the banquet party. (I had long since discovered that you can stay out of the line of fire if you perform at these things, instead of speak!) Problem was, my UFO video collection was back in Arizona. "Great. Iâll come to Arizona," Vladimir confirmed. And after a full weekend of more deliberate intellectual intoxication than a man should be allowed, we headed back to Arizona. So did Vladimir, who drove a Volvo station wagon pumped full of videotapes and paperwork, with only a slight amount of room for the cooler. I never did hear him lecture, but once he was at my ranch, I got the full monty. We actually became great friends. He told me that he was the Hungarian who was calling me in 1985. And that it was our many phone discussions that motivated him to defect to the U.S. Legend had it, though, that he was still a KGB double agent. That wasnât possible, I thought: Heâs too short to be a secret agent! Besides, he has the best UFO video collection Iâve ever seen. My home, the Flying Heart Ranch in Paradise Valley Arizona, was a great place to bring foreign dignitaries. A sprawling horse ranch built in 1947, with multiple guest houses and great oriental landscaping, my home made the perfect setting for getting someone to "loosen up." And loosen up Vladimir did. I heard all about it. Not only did I get to see all the videos he had been collecting, but I got to hear about his day job â his spooky business. Vladimir was a "scientific investigator," as he put it. His interest became his passion, and his passion became his assignment. He investigated the paranormal and scientific secrets of the Third Reich. He harbored no sympathies for the Nazis. He wasnât even interested in the regimeâs philosophy. But he was immersed in their secrets. In the '70s and '80s, the KGB controlled East Germany and East Berlin. This provided the basis for the unraveling of the bizarre tale of Hitler's UFOs. Not only had the Third Reich built them, but the people who built them are still alive today â and building UFOs in South America. Vladimir had pictures to prove it all. The big question in Vladimir's mind was not whether or not they had built UFOs, but whether or not aliens had helped. Having read Morning of the Magicians, I was well-versed in the concepts that the Third Reich had used â magic, astrology, sacred geometry, llamas, and priests from Tibet who barked at the moon to get more power. I didnât know if any of it was true, but I appreciated Vladimirâs quick wit and tenacity. To me, the issues were much more fundamental. If Werner Von Braun et. al., the key Nazi space scientists, had worked on flying disks and levitation machines â with or without aliens â why did they build rockets and tin cans for NASA? Had the aliens abandoned them? Were the Germans holding back this secret knowledge? Was the Third â or Fourth â Reich alive and well in Brazil, building UFOs, commanding the New World Order from the Bilderberg-Hapsburg empire and keeping the traitor Nazis under their thumb at NASA? His name is Brian Miller and he presents himself as chairman (or some other exaltitive title) of a relatively obscure group named "Ceasefire NJ." Mr. Miller will be happy to know that his obscene presentation has moved me to finally join Jews for the Preservation of Firearms Ownership (www.jpfo.org). I will discuss Miller's presentation in due course, but first I want to say something about the Torah reading. This week's portion comes from the end of the book of Leviticus. Sometimes the beginning of the portion (from 26:3) is referred to as "Blessings and Curses." It starts: If you walk in my statutes, and keep my commandments, and do them; Then I will give you rain in due season, and the land shall yield her produce, and the trees of the field shall yield their fruit. And your threshing shall last to the time of vintage, and the vintage shall last to the sowing time; and you shall eat your bread to the full, and dwell in your land safely. And I will give peace in the land, ... Nice. All sweetness and light. These are the "blessings." But they are followed by and escalating series of curses: But if you will not listen to me, and will not do all these commandments; And if you shall despise my statutes, or if your soul loathes my judgments, so that you will not do all my commandments, but that you break my covenant; I also will do this to you; I will appoint over you terror, consumption, and fever, that shall consume the eyes, and cause sorrow of heart; and you shall sow your seed in vain, for your enemies shall eat it. And I will set my face against you, and you shall be slain before your enemies; they who hate you shall reign over you; and you shall flee when none pursues you. That's just from the first set of curses. There are three more sets to be applied if the people do not harken to G-d's Law. All together, there are 30 curses and only 13 blessings. Most of the people in my "Reform" congregation are oblivious to all this. They don't know whether the portion of the week is about Adam and Eve, or about Blessings and Curses; or even that there are Blessings and Curses in the Torah. (twice, in fact - There is another set in Deuteronomy.) Because we had a guest speaker, my Rabbi did not offer a sermon but he did find time to read all 13 blessings aloud to the congregation. He read none of the curses. Mr. Ceasefire-NJ was introduced as someone whose brother was an FBI agent killed by a gunman who shot three agents in a Washington office in the mid-90's. This changed his life. He gave up his previous work, and started Ceasefire-NJ, and mirable dictu was nominated by the "board of directors" to be its chairman. Mr. Ceasefire-NJ started out with a homey anecdote about his gun-owning, NRA member, friend from Brooklyn. Mr. Ceasefire didn't quite sneer when he mentioned the NRA, but his disrespect for the organization was clear. Back in the 70's his friend saw an ad in a gun magazine for some "rings" that would enable only the ring-wearer to fire his gun. So the friend ordered the rings, which "weren't perfect," but they worked. Child-proofing technology was more than 20 years old. Back then a computer took a whole room, and now just a small spot on a desk; and similarly child-proofing has advanced to where the gun can know its owner from the owner's finger prints. The only problem is that the vicious Gun Manufacturers don't want to put this "proven" technology in their products because miserable NRA members don't want them. There was a sneer this time, and there were lots more sneers to follow. Selfish gun owners don't want locks. (Funny then that someone would advertise the magic "rings" in a gun magazine; and who buys all those gun-safes anyway?) What is this ? =I= am the NRA. This guy is a guest in my congregation insulting =me=. Along the way we heard how many little children had died from gun "accidents" and how they would have been saved by fingerprint-sensing-child-proof guns. (about ten a year after one did the necessary division) Of course fingerprint- sensing-child-proofing would have done nothing to save Ceasefire's brother. His poorly veiled message was that we need to confiscate everyones guns. They did it in Australia. People like David Koresh should never have access to guns. Children's lives will be saved. Thursday's Stamford (Connecticut) Advocate reports that O'Donnell's bodyguard not only carries a gun, but has applied for a permit to carry a concealed weapon--the purpose of which would be to allow him to carry a gun on school grounds, while accompanying O'Donnell's adopted son, Parker, to public school in Connecticut's tony, exclusive Greenwich. Is this the same Rosie O'Donnell who said that, in the wake of the Columbine shootings, there should be no guns near schools and castigated the NRA and Tom Selleck for disagreeing with her rabid gun-control position? Is this the same Rosie O'Donnell who told ABC's Cokie Roberts, just over a week ago, "My son and daughter should be able to go to school without the threat of . . . a gun . . . ."? The same Rosie who told Cokie she opposes the right to carry concealed weapons because "this is not the wild west. I do not want to man all of the people in America. . . . So many people are going to be hurt doing that. . . . that would do more harm than good"? Could it be the same woman? Yup. One and the same. The same hypocrite, who apparently feels that we common folk should be unable to have those rights that her bodyguard will now enjoy. The same woman who led the "Million Mom March," but apparently feels that one-in-a-million privileged mom-herself-is immune from the government usurpation of rights she wants to prescribe for the rest of us. You've got a lot of chutzpah, Rosie. O'Donnell told The Advocate that she and her family "need protection because of threats made against her." Welcome to reality, Rosie. Guess what? We may not be celebrities, but many of us feel the need to protect our families, too. Rosie actually had the gall to express concern that publicity about her son's attendance at school, coupled with information that the guard would be unarmed, would make her son vulnerable to harm. Gee, Rosie, thanks for the tip--unarmed means vulnerable. Glad you finally figured it out. O'Donnell and Greenwich school officials are denying that the guard will be armed, but Greenwich Police Chief Peter Robbins confirmed that O'Donnell's bodyguard applied for a permit that would allow him to carry a concealed weapon. Wow, I haven't seen more hypocrisy by a pro-gun control celebrity since that woman who earned $20 million from K-Mart--one of America's most voluminous gun-sellers--spoke out against guns on her TV show but continued to do those K-Mart commercials. Oh yeah-that was Rosie O'Donnell, too. Then there's Al Gore, who doesn't like Moses-neither the real one, nor the one embodied by actor and NRA President Heston. Heston, on Saturday, reiterated his support for George W. Bush and told Gore and the NRA convention that Gore would take his freedom and his gun away "Mr. Gore, from my cold, dead hands." Nothing wrong with that. After all, this is Civil Rights--the Second Amendment--he's talking about. But there's a lot wrong with Al Gore's response to Heston. Like an immature, overgrown kid in a sandbox, Gore whined at Wednesday Night's $26 million Democratic "Hoedown" fundraiser: "The last time Moses listened to a bush, the people wandered in the desert for 40 years." As a Jewish American, I'm offended and outraged. But Gore's sacrilegious attack on G-d's image in the Burning Bush, is not just an attack on my religion and my ancestors who spent those long years in the Sinai Desert. It's an attack on all G-d fearing people, all people of faith everywhere. Gore owes G-d and all of us an apology, and we all owe him a vote for Bush. And Gore shares the same degree of hypocrisy as O'Donnell. This mere mortal man, who just attacked G-d, is the same guy who's been donning satin, fake yarmulkes at synagogues and preaching the rhythmic gospel at Black churches. But he showed us all, Wednesday Night, what he really thinks about G-d and religion. Nice touch, Al. Maybe the triggerlock you're endorsing should be on your mouth. NewsMax.com Friday, May 12, 2000 If a report in a prestigious publication dealing with defense issues is correct, Taiwan has joined the nuclear weapons club, and the strategic situation in the Taiwan Straits has changed drastically. According to a report in the authoritative Defence and Foreign Affairs journal the Taiwanese military have gotten their hands on two nuclear warheads and put them on a pair of medium-range ballistic missiles aimed at the mainland. The journal, published by the International Strategic Studies Association in Washington reports that the nukes, originally owned by South Africa, were obtained in an under-the-counter deal brokered by a so-called "intermediary Middle Eastern country." Taiwanese officials strongly denied the report and said they didnt have any "medium-range surface-to-surface missiles" that could carry nuclear warheads and, thanks to restictions on exports of missile technology, couldnt develop their own arsenal of ballistic missiles if they wanted to. Nevertheless, if the report is true, the entire strategic situation, vis-a-vis the Taiwan-Mainland China standoff, has changed drastically. China has made no secret about their plans to invade Taiwan should the islands government declare independence. Published reports from official Peoples Liberation Army have outlined a blitzkrieg-like attack on Taiwan, with hundred of thousands of PLA troops landing on the island and overwhelming Taiwanese defenses. The lightning like invasion would effectively preclude U.S. participation in the early stages of the war, and China bluntly warned the United States that they would not hesitate to use their own nuclear arsenal against the United States, should the United States attempt to use nuclear weapons in retalliation against China. But, if Taiwan does have even as few as two nuclear missiles aimed at the mainland, they could stop a Chinese invasion dead in its tracks. They however, have conveniently left out essential details and facts which if reported, would have changed markedly the essence of their article. 1. There was no mention about any radioactivity in the smoke. 2. What about the fire damage to the Ef and Phermex sites at the Los Alamos labs where the areas are littered with pieces of chemical high explosives, toxic metals and radioactive elements which when the rains arrive will wash down into already contaminated canyons behind the lab. Because of the fire and some incomplete burning, additional contaminates, PAHs, among which are some very carcinogenic substances, have been added to the toxic element runoff. 3. There was no mention of the enormous damage to the 50,000 acres of land decimated by the fire which also, when the rains arrive, will offer no resistance to the flood waters picking up the toxic contaminates mixed in the soils no longer anchored by the once live plant life, which will then rush virtually unimpeded into the Rio Grande and Cochiti Reservoirs. A LANL cleanup manager is quoted as saying,"We're really looking at some catastrophic problems for the lab and the county coming off the national forest lands. Efforts will be made to cleanup and to stabilize as much as possible the contaminted run offs from the lab sites, but the LANL budget cleanup funds are quite limited and the Monsoons are here. There are many unknowns concerning the potential threat to life, due to scanty knowledge of just what synergistic effect the multiple contaminates will have, but one thing is for sure, this fire and it's derivatives has been and will continue to be a significant disastrous event for all life in Los ALamos and surrounding Countys and poses an imminent and future danger for all sentient life forms within those countys. For the Santa Fe New Mexican to publish their article which so incompletey describes the event and the existing dangers and to entitle it in a way which is thoroughly misleading, shows either their lack of concern for the truth and/or their overt incompetence. Congressman Fears Police State, Says Waco Expert May Have Murdered NewsMax.com Tuesday, May 30, 2000 Democratic Rep. James A. Traficant says America is a virtual police state, and he worries that a leading forensic expert hired by Congress to investigate Waco may have been murdered.Late in April of this year NewsMax.com first broke nationally the story about the suspicious death of Carl Ghigliotti. Ghigliotti was an expert FLIR (Forward-Looking InfraRed) videotape analyst hired by the House Government Reform Committee to analyze the flashes on infrared film taken by the FBI during its March 1993 Waco raid. Ghigliotti baldly said the FBI had lied when it claimed it had not fired into the compound. He confirmed that the infrared film showed gunfire coming from the assault weapons of FBI agents. Maryland police officials say Ghigliotti officially died of a heart attack last April. His badly decomposed body was discovered in his office on April 28, after his building manager called the police telling them he hadnt seen Ghigliotti for weeks. Traficant believes too many coincidences, including Ghigliottis death, have occurred during the Waco investigation and is now calling upon Congress to take action. The Ohio congressman is not buying official claims that Ghigliotti, age 42, died of a heart attack in his sleep. "Something stinks," he said. "Ghigliotti said the FBI lied, that they did fire automatic weapons into the burning [Branch Davidian] building, said the congressman. "But Vector Data Systems of England said the FBI did not lie. Two scientific groups totally disagree. "Vector gets hundreds of millions of dollars in contracts from the FBI, continued Traficant. "To boot, FBI audio tapes of the burning building are now lost. To boot, FBI autopsy reports confiscated of victims are now missing. Traficant also pointed out the FBI lodged an alleged or false child abuse charge against the Davidians. The FBI had also initially denied using combustible incendiary tear gas canisters, only to admit doing so later. Although Traficant is pushing for a congressional investigation, the Laurel City Police Department told NewsMax.com it was no longer investigating the case. "The investigations been closed on the basis of the report from the medical examiners office which showed that he died of a heart attack brought on by arteriosclerosis, said Mary Bulla, the administrative specialist at Laurel City Police Department. "They found no indication of foul play, and they put that it was a natural death, so that concludes our investigation. Police State Fears "We have developed a stone cold police state in America, believe me, from Waco, Ruby Ridge, to Miami, Florida, Traficant said. In an effort to move forward an investigation of the Justice Departments handling of the Waco tragedy, Traficant has sponsored H.R. 4105, a bill that would enact the Fair Justice Act of 2000. The act, if passed, would establish the Fair Justice Agency, a new federal agency that would independently have the power to investigate and prosecute alleged misconduct, criminal activity, corruption or fraud by an officer or employee of the Justice Department. The bill states that the president would appoint the director of the proposed FJA for a 10-year term subject to a Senate confirmation. Only inefficiency, neglect of duty or malfeasance in office would be a cause for the directors dismissal by the president. Under the bill, the FJA would have the same prosecutorial and investigative authority as the Justice Department. I found areas where the magnetic background sometimes became so unstable and changed so radically that I could feel it change moment by moment. I recorded transient magnetic anomalies that were measured in tens of thousands of gammas, which is far beyond anything normal or cultural. And I witnessed and recorded my compass pointing towards the south during the photographing of a UFO performance, indicating a synchronous aerial magnetic anomaly. I have photographically recorded with time exposures (sometimes with accompanying dynamic camcorder records) over 100 night sightings and close encounters, including low fly-overs and spectacular maneuvers of plasma lights in the sky. The shapes of these craft were anything but conventional, and they certainly were not figments of my imagination (there were sometimes multiple witnesses). Their stealth technology is awesome, and beyond anything our military has admitted to having. For example, I was in a helicopter over the hot spot in daylight when a craft buzzed us at Mach 8 less than 500 feet away. We saw a flash of light and felt a very muffled shock wave that bounced the helicopter. We captured three such passes on film and videotape, which allowed me to determine speed and plasma light characteristics. To make it happen, you not only have to vote for Mr. Buchanan, but you have to vote for candidates for Congress who are Constitutional Conservatives. This means you have to educate yourself as to who will be on your local ballot in the District races. Except for the few constitutional conservatives already in the Congress. all the others must be 'dumped'. [Contract for America! up my you know what; the NWO pimps have had their chance at the expense of our stroking their ego] Yes, We have an alarming crisis on our hands; make no mistake about it.
