 Thanks all!

Hi!

First, don't be put off by the volume controls being 1-11 on the web
and 1-40 on the remote UI - the control covers the same range, you just
have more resolution using the remote.

Second, the reason it sounds too loud will be to do with the
sensitivity of the amp you are driving it with- other people have
complained its too quiet!

But the good news is that there is a feature just for you. In the web
interface, go to Player Settings - Audio and look for Preamp Volume
Control. This is the value of attenuation in dB which will be applied
to this player regardless of the volume setting. Default 0. Try som
other values like 10 or 20 - look for the value which , when used with
max on the normal volume control, gives you the loudest volume you
can imagine wanting.

This feature was added relatively recently, so if you don't find it you
should download a more recent version of slimserver.

I recently upgraded my system and am trying to install 6.2.1 on Mandriva

it starts OK but it's never actually running. I'm getting an error

there is a quite perceptible background hiss on the squeezeslave-side.
this was not the case with earlier versions. not as noticable when

I also installed sqeezeslave on a faster XP machine, and here lag

to ~.1 sec in about 1 minute. start of next song eliminates lag, and
then it starts growing again.

It seems my old laptop is too slow, doesn't it?

 Thanks all!

I'm going to assume you're not an 'audiophile' because of where you
posted this, but depending on what kind of amp you're using you may
want to 'attenuate' the signal outside the Squeezebox for other
reasons.

If your amp is that 'loud', you may be vulnerable to a burst of noise
coming out of the Squeezebox in one form or another, and potentially
damaging your speakers.

Limiting the maximum volume with the volume knob of a receiver or
integrated amp, or using a passive attenuator on a power amp, will keep
the digital attenuation applied by the Squeezebox to a minimum. Not only
does this reduce the risk of a noise burst, it may have sonic benefits
as well by keeping total digital attenuation above the -35db gain point
[see link for clarification].

Great work Richard!

I've been using squeezeslave since I first ported it to linux after the
first release. The ability to sync multiple squeezeslaves is my
favourite feature. I've been running my SB3 wired v29 sync'd with two
squeezeslave clients almost every day for the last two weeks and it's
been flawless. Both slaves run ArchLinux. For one I'm using an old
Toshiba Satellite Pro 440cdt 133Mhz Pentium MMX with 48MB of memory,
the other on my P4 2.4GHz Dell machine. The laptop never misses a
beat. I've used FLAC and mp3 files served with slimserver 6.2.1
without a hitch. While playing either of these file formats the laptop
CPU utilization never peaks above 62% and all the clients stay close
enough in sync that as I move from one room to another there is no
noticeable diffence in playback position of the song.

Ben - thanks so much for all your continuing hard work. I don't even

want and have been hoping for for a long time!

Anyway, quick n00b question to the group - as someone with 6.2 running

simply uninstall it completely and download a daily .exe windows

preloaded and what I'll need to do to make it work on the 770 itself...
Is there a FAQ or any setup tips? Sorry, I searched the forum and
didn't find a good answer specific to the Nokia device...

Thanks!

I think that should work. The one quirk that I saw switching from 6.2 to
6.5 (mind you, this was on a linux machine) was that the database
schemas are not compatible with one another, and I had to make sure
that my 6.2 db cache file was removed. I'm pretty sure doing an
uninstall on windows will remove that file.

Once you install 6.5, you just need to point your browser to
http://localhost:9000/Nokia770 (or, if you are on a different machine
than your slimserver, replace localhost with the IP address of the
server). The Nokia770 skin is part of the 6.5 distribution.

If there's Nokia770 skin users out there that use a Windows-based
slimserver, feel free to pipe in your experiences with changing to
6.5.

cheers,

Hmm. The article ID didn't end up in your URL. Try this one:

http://www.hothardware.com/viewarticle.aspx?articleid=779

They do note the fixed upward angle as a potential problem for users
that want to install the SB on a high shelf. I recall that being
discussed on this forum earlier, but people that actually installed in
this way had no problems.

They also mention the issue of the power supply introducing noise on
the second page of the article, as noticed by many audiophiles, but
then say they used the stock supply for their tests. Then, on page
six, they talk about how good the sound quality is. If at all, I think
it would have been better to mention the power supply issue nearer to
where they raved about the sound quality.

But overall, a very good review.

From a used or new retailer, buy an amp and 2 speakers. The speakers
should be 2-way or more. You don't have to spend a lot. You may want
to avoid computer speaker systems, due to their cheapness, distorted
bass, and lack of frequency response. No cheap computer audio system
can compete with a basic amp/receiver and two decent speakers. Running
the signal from your computer will most likely require a simple 1/8 to
RCA cable that you can run right into the amp. The Squeezebox comes with
the appropriate cable to hook into a stereo.

[slim] Syncronising -- track restarts

2006-02-06 Thread Cams

I'm just curious to know whether this behaviour can be changed. I'm
listening to one SB3 and move to another room and wish to sync, so I go
through Settings Synchronise and it makes the track restart. This is
particularly annoying when listening to podcasts, which I do regularly.

Can this be prevented from happening?

Thanks
Cams

not at this time. The syncronisation feature works by matching the
buffer fills and starting playback for each player at the same instant
for each track. It would be a better idea to sync before you start.
There are a few enhancements requested for more advanced sync
handling, but I'm not sure that skipping to a midpoint in a podcast is
covered by any of them at this point. That would see mto require the
ability for a player to connect to the existing stream going to
another player. Right now, the server delivers a single stream to
each player, even if they are copies of one another.

To install the plugin, just copy it into the Plugins folder.

To enable the plugin, go to Server Settings / Plugins on the web

hrrm... the GrabPlaylist plugin does this... usually very close to the
same spot the other player was at.

It doesn't Sync... it steals the playlist, even mid-track, and moves
it.

(I use it every morning as part of my Migrate To The Living Room
process, and every night in reverse...)

I haven't looked at how it syncs though, it should be possible to use
the same logic and have it not stop the other player.

now that is odd. If you have only one source, there should be no

I'd highly recommend it. I strongly suspect that these problems can

Re: [slim] Syncronising -- track restarts

2006-02-06 Thread Kevin Weller
IME one of the biggest disappointments of the Squeezebox is
synchronisation.

There's the track restart you mention (and even then my SB2 and 3 are
often unsynchronised for the first track), no crossfade on synchronised
units and my set-up keeps displaying tracks it's not playing when units
have been synchronised for a while. On occasion the track that is
playing is not even in the playlist. The AudioScrobbler plug-in always
logs the correct track so it's something to do with the server.

My intent on buying an SB3 for the kitchen (having decided SoftSqueeze
just wasn't going to be able to synchronise with the existing SB2) was
that if anyone was sitting in kitchen and wanted to hear more clearly
the track currently being played they could just synchronise it - that
causes the restart and first-track-not-synchronised issue.

I then thought I'd leave them 'permanently' synchronised and anyone
wanting to listen could just turn the speakers on but that causes the
track display problem.

I also thought when we have a party these would be really good for
playing music round the house - they're not for the reasons already
mentioned.

The result of this is the kitchen SB3 sits there as an expensive
ornament most of the time which is both a shame and a waste of money.

Don't get me wrong, I think this is a great device and the SB2 in the
study is on most of the time, but it would be much better and more
functional if only I could get the damn things to synchronise properly
and display the correct track names when it does so.

I assume it's something to do with my system (although I've no idea
what) as otherwise I assume I'd see other people here complaining that
synchronisation - one of the advertised benefits of the units - just
doesn't work but when I see

Synchronize music to more rooms—Broadcast the same music or independent
streams to 2, 10 or even 20 rooms by adding Squeezebox players to
stereos in each location.

..on the SlimDevices page I wonder how accurate that claim actually
is.

I don't sync often, but when I have it works. Admittedly, not always
first time, but a quick stop and play solves it. What ends up killing
it for me, is that I can't seem to get my network to stay fully
connected, so it never lasts long. In any given evening, something
will get kicked off, whether its one of the squeezeboxen, or the
laptop with the older pc card. That will kill sync every time, of
course, and also plays havoc with the internal dns.

that Sync.pm can't have the Slim::Player::Source::gototime($client,

Yes, things may be a bit out of sync to start with, but they'll resync

[slim] Re: iTunes and DRM

2006-02-06 Thread Michaelwagner

I think there's a misunderstanding here.

Support for DRM and iTunes DRM has nothing to do with open source. In
fact, quite the contrary.

Apple won't release the license to anyone, Slim or others (well, there
was one other, but it was some kind of an exception).

Many people here don't much like Apple for what they've done with
iTunes.

But the people who have contributed here on this form and in this
thread (including myself and Skunk) are not Slim employees. They don't
speak for Slim (unless it says Slim Devices in their header).

If you somehow acquired the license to the iTunes decrypting library,
you'd be welcome to leverage the open source and modify it. But I
think you'd find that Apple, not Slim, would be the stumbling block
there.

It would be really nice if SlimServer/hardware players could communicate to
interrogate where they are currently up to in a song so that synchronisation
can be started at any time.

If Player A is currently playing and Player B is told to Sync to A, could
SlimServer send a pause to A, find where it is in the track, and then fill the
buffer on B at the same point, and then unpause both players? Does SlimServer
do anything else special to overcome different delays in network transport?

Sync is done via the track start event, and I wouldn't want to mess
with that hardware trip using a software jump. Gototime could be way
off by the time the buffer fills (buffer can hold upwards of 30
seconds of mp3). The format for playback is set to the best SHARED
format. If you sync SB2 with SliMP3 then all playback is converted to
mp3 and gototime will have no effect for transcoded files. Starting
over is consistent behaviour for all of these cases.

In all honesty, there are much better causes to lobby for at this point.

I'll have to look into why they don't override, but you can make this
work right away by specifying the player type in your custom lines.
Instead of using

mov flc * *

use:
mov flc squeezebox2 *

not that from the server perspective, squeezebox2 is the same as squeezebox 3.

other valid player types:
slimp3
softsqueeze
squeezebox

Then you should have all of the options listed in file types, and the
ones from the default convert, for which your setup does not have

I did find that a SB2 and SB3 struggled to stay in sync for more than a

There is a dilemma here, to be more successful for those people who
want to install and leave alone, then it has to be a lot more solid out
of the box. No matter how many times you can point to inferior products,
that doesn't make this one better. At the same time it still has to
appeal to the community that contribute and therefore be fast moving.

I personally think the answer is to have much more solid and
well-tested releases for more general users, rather than enthusiasts.
These would be updated a lot less often and be more rigorously QA'd.
The nuts like me who like to live on the bleeding edge can carry our

What do you mean by stress? The CPU runs all the time.
If it is doing more useful work, say uncompressing a FLAC stream,
do you consider that stress? the cycles were going to happen
anyway, electrons would move, etc.

FLAC was designed to be easy to uncompress by very low
capabilities systems. Feeding a stream of bytes
to a D-to-A convertor makes the DA do something, but
that is what it was designed to do.

The SlimServer is much more likely to get stressed,
and only when driving lots of SBs in parallel.
I'm not sure what stress is to a dumb box like
a SqueezeBox. Its a slim device, after all.

guess you should qualify: load on the system in
terms of bandwidth required or load on the
Squeezebox CPU?

For bandwidth, it would be WAV: completely
uncompressed, full bitrate, 1440 kbps.

Note that FLAC was designed to be very easy to
decode, placing most of the processing power
requirement on the encoding step. It's assumed
that a track will be encoded on a typical PC, so
the encoding emphasis was on compression rather
than efficiency. Once compressed, the format is
designed to be extremely easy to decompress. Even
though no hardware FLAC players existed at the
time of its creation, the FLAC developers realized
that the efficiency would have to be concentrated
on the decoding first and foremost.

Thanks to that forward thinking, the Squeezebox
can play FLAC with only modest demands on its 250
MHz RISC processor.

joek wrote:
I want to be able to stress test and am curious as
to which of the audio
formats would provide a heavy load on the SB3?

Would it be FLAC, since the SB3 would have to
uncompress a large audio
 stream before playing?

 Thanks!

2006-02-06 Thread funkstar

To place demand on the server you could set it up to transode from
something like OGG (takes slightly more CPU to decode than MP3) and
then send it out as MP3 with some insane quality presets. That should
stretch your server.

What is your server hardware?
Are you using all this wired or wire less?
How many SBs are we talking here?

a completely wired network with hardware less than three years old and
a single SB is going to cope with anything you can throw at it.
Increase the number of SBs significantly, use old hardware and switch
to wireless and you will very easily start to come across problems.
Some of with will be easy enough to get round, others not so (wireless
especially when you have a noisy signal area)

Re: [slim] Re: Which format puts heaviest demand on SB?

2006-02-06 Thread Mark Lanctot
If you can play WAV without issues, you can
definitely play FLAC.

WAV = 1440 kbps (off a CD), with overhead you'd
need 2000 kbps of bandwidth at least.

FLAC = 1000 kbps, 1500 kbps of bandwidth will do.

There's no reason to stream WAV though. You won't
gain any quality, it doesn't support tags and it
uses more hard drive space and bandwidth.

There's a good network test plugin here:
http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=18149.
If you can manage 2000 kbps at 100%, you will
have no problems with WAVs, but you'll only need
1500 kbps for FLAC.

Custom.map. I tried to just do the same as what I did with song
scanner but it didn't work. Basically I added the line

0.hold  = menu_PLUGIN.Bookmark

but that did not seem to do anything. And I did disable the Favorites
plugin also.

it should work. It does for me. Did you restart the server after
making the change?
if you put this in a custom map, have you selected that map in the
player settings?
