[slim] Am I likely to screw anything up if......
.I run my SB3 set up again? I just don't want to be without my music this weekend if I do something that will stuff it up. Today, I installed a new hard drive on my music server. I used the same network name etc but now when my SB connects - it takes 3 or 4 tries (me pushing the power button on remote) before it hooks up with Slimserver. I've noticed in the settings that it has connected to Host 2 - so assuming it is looking for the original host that was on my original HDD settings and then connects to Host 2 when it can't find it. Any quick fixes you guys can help me with? Re: [slim] looking for quiet hi-capacity external HD
If you look at off-the-shelf external drives you'll discover that they come with 1 year warranties. It isn't too hard to find 5 year warranties for "internal" drives. What you want to do is buy an "internal" drive and an external drive box and put it together yourself. Make sure the box you get can handle the drive capacity that you intend to install. Seagate makes some quiet, 5 year warranty HDDs. First, thanks to those who replied to my question. Second, sounds like there's a consensus that Spinpoints are the quietest out there. Third, as far as I can tell from websurfing and the replies I've gotten on this forum, the Samsungs only come as internals and that the user must combine it with the proper enclosure, damping gizmos, etc, to use it as an external drive. To be honest, I'm nervous about doing this, since I'm a rank amateur and don't know anything about computer installation etc. Does anyone out there know of a supplier for Spinpoints already enclosed for external use? If you read the specs AGAIN you'll see that they have a S/PDIF input as well as analog XLR on each speaker and 1/4" TRS on each speaker. The XLRs and TRSs serve a dual purpose. When you feed a S/PDIF signal to the RIGHT 2029 its XLR connector sends the converted analog output to the LEFT 2029. Likewise, the TRS jack sends another analog feed that can go to the sub-woofer amp. When the digital input is OFF, both of the XLR inputs do revert to INPUT, as well as the TRS if you wish. I have the coax out of the SB3 feeding the digital input and the XLRs between the two send audio to the left 2029. When the SB3 is off it kills the digital stream and my Sony XBR TV analog outs feed the TRS inputs, controlled by the TV remote. It's not too bad, for a bedroom setup! USPS *should* come via regular RoyalMail but it depends how it's routed I think. Express USPS however will go via Parcelforce and they will charge customs fees and the fee is extortionate compared to non-express (something like £18). Also ParcelFarce will almost certainly loose the package, or return it to the sender after claiming they left a card but didn't and not bothering to wait the mandatory week before returning it. Plus they're a nightmare as their depots are only open in work hours, are miles away from anywhere and have little or no customer parking. Then you have to try and get service as you stand at the desk for ages pressing the bell, then they take half an hour trying to find the package (only to then say they can't find it). Not that I hate ParcelFarce much of course! If the parcel comes via regular RoyalMail there's a higher chance of it avoiding customs. Though note if it does get hit, RoyalMail have now increased their handling fee to £8. That's twice the price it was before and a rise somewhat massively higher than inflation! Oh and they've cut back the opening hours in some of their collection depots. With RM you risk the parcel just being dumped on the doorstep regardless of any need for a signature and the value of the item. RM of course ParcelFarce, so no wonder I hate them also. If you can use DHL, I believe (but I'm not certain) that you can get a reduced fee as a personal importer who only buys the odd item now and again from overseas. -- deadkenny deadkenny's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=6722 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=34637 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

[slim] Mac OS X nightlies for 7.0a1 incomplete since May 8
Just a quick heads up that the nightly builds of SlimServer 7.0a1 have been compiling or uploading improperly. The last working build was from May 8 - since then the files have been approximately 500K, where they should be 23MB. The .dmg mounts and contains the SlimServer Installer, but there are no files in the Install Files folder. The buildlog.mac file shows a BUILD FAILED message early in its process.

Hi, and thanks for the replies, As you both guessed it wasn't really transporter related in the end, I hooked up a laptop to the wifi, and it could connect to the internet, but not to anything on the lan, so something really screwy was going on in the router. After a factory reset of the router, and a reconfiguration one step at a time, everything seems to be back to normal, I still have no idea what can cause wifi to loose connection to the "internal" network whilst keeping the external network, but I'm just hoping it doesn't happen again, if it does, new router for me. Do they make 1 TB drives yet? Last I heard Seagate has 750 GB drives, but no 1 TB drives, and they're not as quiet as the Samsung Spinpoints. I have a 250 GB Spinpoint P and it's extremely quiet. Get an enclosure like this: http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/ProductInfo.asp?WebProductID=433754 - which accepts SATA and IDE, for flexibility. Then get a suitable drive. I use Samsung Spinpoints, which are generally recognised as being the quietest, but they only go up to 500GB AFAIK. Seagates may be the next best call. I'm not sure I'd call an online article from a retailer a "review", exactly :). Re: [slim] Duplicate Albums
hey kdf, thanks for the pointers over to bug database. there's one thing i think i neglected to mention in all the previous posts, however - i am using a readynas600 from infrant technology to run the slimserver program. i download a pre-compiled version of slimserver directly from infrant and upload that image to my readynas. i do not use an intervening PC to run slimserver. i only need the PC to rip and flac-encode cds. for that, i use a linux system and the shell script "abcde". i do not have access to any source code, and cannot really take advantage of slimserver being an open source product. that's why i kept saying that i have no access to the source code. sorry for the oversight! i believe the best choice here is to downrev both the readynas firmware and the version of slimserver. i can go back to raidiator 2.* from the newset version (3.01*), and use slimserver 6.3.1. the raidiator version that i have already has slimserver 6.5.1 built in, and will not allow me to add on a 6.3.1 version. so, downrevving the readynas will have to come first. as someone pointed out earlier, 6.3.1 will allow for correctly-handled multiple GENRE tags, and won't force me to reorganize tens of thousands of files. thanks again for your help! i appreciate it very much. best, -sherm -- shermoid "you are only young once, but you can be immature forever" "life is uncertain; eat dessert first" - anonymous please visit my mcintosh website: http://alumni.cse.ucsc.edu/~sherman shermoid's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=379 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=27746 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

Re: [slim] Transporter. “Boom” at power on/off .
I really think a high end device like the Transporter must control transient behavior on the outputs . And if it can't be fixed in firmware/software than there should be a free hardware fix offered. If I unplug power to my sb3 while directly connected to my DNA125, I will get a very heavy thunk through the speakers. So I always have to make sure the amp is off and I sweat bullets during electrical storms (since I tend to leave it on 24x7). Seems like there should be a better mechanism to electrically isolate the outputs. I really like the sonic improvement running sb3 > amp vs. including a preamp in the chain. Since we're throwing ideas around, you might want to try this: At the EXACT physical location of your SB3, disconnect the SB3 and try connecting a laptop in the _same_ power outlet and connect it to your lan using the _same_ ethernet cable... At least in the old 6.3.1, "Browse Music Folder" doesn't add album art. I added that manually, but that of course requires SQL knowledge. It can't be that difficult to create a routine that just checks/fixes album art, and I don't understand why SlimServer works this way and only updates album art at rescan.
