I just greatly prefer everything else. Receivers on wifi drove me nuts, but the one I am using wired is fine. Like I said, I really like the controllers, but have a couple dim ones, and one of them has the sticky nav wheel. One thing that Paul (OP) might consider is a Radio. They are abundant on ebay (here in the US) and cheap (~$50USD). You can wire the headphone out to RCA inputs. While I would not do it for an expensive/critical listening system, I did it for a friend with a modest system and it doesn't sound to bad. Ergo wise it's like a touch with a smaller screen and physical controls (knobs and buttons). Then when you find your touch or pi, it's a great second player, especially with a battery adding portability. Also, the radio can be used as a controller - that is, get just a receiver, or one of Philippe's squeezeamps, and you have a pseudo-duet. The radio can just be set to control the receiver/s-amp. Re: [slim] Does Anyone Have a Slimdevice for Sale?
Not the response you are looking for, but you don't want a duet. I own a few, and the touch is far superior. The duet was my first sb, and I bought extra receivers, and other used duets, but most of the receivers are in a box I like, and use the controller half of the Duet, but at their age they are prone to dim screens, and sticky nav wheels. The receivers, I only use them on ethernet, IMO, the wifi performance (antenna?) is the worst of all the players. The touch is a real nice kit IMO. Jim Disclaimer - this is my own experience, I know others like the receivers, but they have been my only sb device that has cause struggles. IMO there are much better options (like a touch or @w3w's suggestion) Redrum's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=33806 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=117234 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Re: [slim] In love with SqueezeLite and LMS. Frustrated at the same time.
I read the OP yesterday and decided to keep quiet as to not be a distraction. Something I should do more often. I use a pi3b+ with pcp as a server, but I have no squeeze lite devices. But I had one thought, so I returned here today. Why not just start with a fresh install of pcp on your 3b+, follow the "how to's" exactly, and see if you can get good behavior out of the headphone jack? You can use phones/buds, or just use a jack->rca cable and plug it into an amp/speakers. >From what I remember, to get that far takes just a few minutes. Get that working, then take the next step. Identify the step that breaks it...or, cheer if it just works in the end :) If you decide to try this, make sure you check everything at each step (i.e. your spotify connect issue too) Jim Redrum's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=33806 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=117179 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

I am not trying to squash @jimzak's innovation, but. I posted about something similar using refurbished Amazon Fire tablets (as low as $20USD for an 8") https://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?116398-Cheap-Fire-HD-Tablets The devil in the details seems to me the constant application of line power to the tablet/chrome book and it's long term affect on the battery. @RobbH has a great idea to try to setup the android app "tasker" to turn on and off a smart plug. I had planned on checking into this this winter, but winter has only started :) But, I also think it has great possibilities. It's a very "thin" (hang on the wall?) solution. I bought and converted a number of these tablet just to have a material/squeeze cntrl as a control/now playing screen hanging laying around, and found I also use them for ear bud listening as well, especially when the house is sleeping... I should have never posted based on what friends told me ("I didn't do anything") and some old foggy memories, perhaps from a very early version of LMS, or perhaps fabricated in my mind. I played a touch with a pcp LMS server, stopped LMS, and indeed, from the touch UI, it prompts if you want to switch to mysb.com. Even better, when in favorites, it says "mysb.com favorites". Thanks Robb, I know very little about using CLI, but have found the documentation, and will look into it. Still it does seem weird that something so legacy, out of date, development stopped years ago, would remain so integrated into LMS. The account authorization I completely understand, it's already in place for Pandora, etc, why not use it for Tidal, etc. But to not be able to disable fleeing LMS when you can't find it, seems strange. But, maybe it never comes up, except for some new users :) Still maybe an easier solution is to display always, or at a tap, the attached server. [slim] unknowingly switching to mysb.com
I suppose I should be able to dig around and experiment, but I'd rather just ask :) go to -italics- for the question if the back story is boring We all know sb device, LMS, and mysb.com, and their roles pretty well. But then we deploy them to technically challenged and inexperienced friend and family, then "things happen" I have seen this, or similar at least 5+ times. I'd like to find a way out to avoid it: I deployed a touch, rpi3b+ (pcp server only) to a non technical and not very willing to learn friend and he thinks the world of it. I went over the other day and he was listening to pandora (sure, why not). He said "I cannot get radio paradise anymore" so I investigated with him watching. I backed out, then into favorites, which identified mysb.com is the server. I went to my music, and it could not connect to the LMS server. I went over to the little pi box and the power supply was switched off (tidying up?). I turned it on and viola, was able to use my music to switch to LMS, then favorites to the RP links I set up. I told him what happened. Blank stare. He had lived with it for months. So, I knew it was bound to repeat. Had it just not worked (no mysb.com) I would have gotten a call. -So, my question(s) - is there a way to turn off the auto switch to mysb.com if LMS is not available? The "integration" setting in LMS seems to be only for player settings. Further, if I can prevent the switch, can mysb.com still be used to account validate his Pandora?- My comment - it seems to me that the auto switch, with no real display of what server you are using, can trip our less experienced people up. What are the ways we can prevent that? Is there a way on the touch screen to always list the server name, even if it's invisible until you tap? Also, I know to use MyMusic to switch to LMS and settings->advanced->forgot what this is->switch to mysb.com to switch to mysb.com, but it's not intuitive to others. I do know that I can add the settings->~ to the main menu, but, do less experienced? Jim PS - as a side note, I have been thinking about starting a thread on "accessibility". We all know this from computers/devices as the attempt to equalize the experience with the hearing, sight, and physically impaired. But what about daft and unwilling to learn? My thought would be to share our experiences and "tricks and tips" to make this flexible and powerful system as close to push and play as possible. Think a thread on this would be useful? Re: [slim] Tracks stop after 30 sec
have you tried a factory reset? I would also suggest trying another player, so you can have confidence it's not your touch, or, you narrow it down to your touch. I doubt the touch wifi is contributing to your issues, but if you would like, why not test it on ethernet. I have two touches on wifi, no issues. The SB radios however have been problematic with the new wifi6 routers. There is also a community firmware available for the touch. I have zero experience with it, so I can't help you with it. You could give it a try https://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?113479-Announce-Community-Firmware-for-Squeezebox-Radio-Touch-Controller-and-LMS-8&highlight=firmware I again encourage you to try to isolate your issue to files/player/server/hard drive/etc... by swapping. It's so much easier to try to solve the issue. It would be different if this was a common problem. To my knowledge it hasn't been reported before (?) Re: [slim] Tracks stop after 30 sec
If you want to test the "it's the touch" theory, and you don't have another player, you can download squeezelite-X from the windows store, or, pay a couple $ for sb player (if you have an android phone/tablet) or ??? if you have an iphone (??? = help me ipeople :)) I can't remember if you ever said you used your picore player pi as a player, but if you haven't, you could easily do that and use the headphone output for testing. You could also download some public domain music files and try those. Again, I am fond of swapping things out to isolate the issue, figure that out yet? :) Jim Redrum's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=33806 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=116756 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

I say that because, in my experience, that is exactly what happens (often) with my receivers on wifi with a network exception. They "lock up" (white light, controller still sees them but non responsive). I would reset the receiver and controller and bring them back up together. I can't say I have seen this with touch, radios, boom where a power down/up wouldn't fix it. I don't think the receivers handle the exception the way the other players do. [slim] Cosmetic Facelift for SB Devices - Scratch Removal.
Not sure if this has been mentioned, so I thought I would post about a success. I have bought quite a few (maybe too many) SB devices second hand and try to inspect the listing pictures to see if the device is in fairly nice shape cosmetically (including the dreaded stick) especially the clear bezels of the touch and radio I have bought a few that I was disappointed in, but just lived with the marks. I recently got a red radio (yes, you need to own all 3 colors). There was only onepicture in the listing and I didn't see the mark across the bezel (below). So I bought the Novus 1,2,3 kit, 8oz here in the US about $20, $14 for 2 oz. Check out the results below. I also treated the red case, and while some scratches remain, it's much much better. I suppose I could use, say 1000, then 2000 wet sanding, then the 1,2,3. before 37663 after 37664 Novus 37665 Jim +---+ |Filename: stuff 2.jpg | |Download: http://forums.slimdevices.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=37665| +---+ Redrum's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=33806 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=116240 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

The other thing to keep in mind, while many are discovering LMS, most of "us" are experienced users. (To me) it seems like "Radio" was targeted to the "I bought a sb radio, plugged it in, lets listen to the internet". If you are to change "radio" I would think it makes sense to target power over convenience for functionality. Remember, allot of the wonderful powerful plugin and functions of LMS are not "plug and play" for those new to LMS (example DSTM, You Tube plugin, etc). Re: [slim] Remote key not working
If you have cleaned the landing area of the keys with a pencil eraser, maybe a bit of deoxit, and it still doesn't work, but looks ok, perhaps the carbon on the key itself has deteriorated. If you wanted to, since you have more than one, swap the keypad to see if the problem is the pcb or the keypad. If it is a certain key(s) on the keypad, and you wish to spend a little $ to descend further into the rabbit hole, carbon conductive paint is available to "restore" the conductive properties of the pad. Here's a link to Amazon (US). Jaca wrote: > > > This is too tiny with my soldering skills to properly fix so had to > improvise and weird things turned out to be working :) > > cool! Wire wrap wire works real well for those jumpers if you have any #26-#30 laying around. Just mentioning wire wrap might date me :). Since it's single strand it allows you to shape the jumper, and being small it's not likely to get in the way of anything. Also if you wanted to attempt a repair with just solder and a small tip, the solder will only stick to the exposed copper, so if you used an exacto knife to scrape away the coating exposing the trace that you expect to be broken, you don't have to be real precise with the iron, the solder will only adhere to the exposed copper. It might look like it blobs over other traces, but as long as they aren't exposed copper you are ok. You also mentioned the "holes" corresponding to problem areas. The holes are "vias" and they are basically a copper plated hole that allows a trace on one side of the board to the other (assuming 2 layer board for simplicity). So if you suspected a via is bad, scrape a bit on each side, maybe scrape the hole with a drill bit, and blob the solder through it. Nice fix! I digress :) Jim Redrum's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=33806 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=115905 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

It is very common for one button, or an area to fail, possibly because of a spill. a pcb trace failure is possible, but it should be visible under a magnifier. Also when using a multimeter for checking traces, realize there may be a conformal coating over them (but not the button landing pads). You need to use sharp meter probes to pierce the coating to test. You could try hunk of something conductive (like copper solder wick) and press onto the button in question spot to see if the ir functions trigger. This might indicate a problem with the carbon on the bottom of the silicone. Again, I could rummage around and fine one, maybe two...who knows, I have all sorts of parts :) Jim Redrum's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=33806 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=115905 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] Remote key not working
if you mean the little hand held remote similar to all of the other ones (tv, etc) laying around... often you can open the case and clean it. The buttons consist of interlaced copper traces on the pcb board, and the silicone pad (the button) has a carbon deposit on it (usually carbon, I think?). When pressed, the carbon shorts the interlaced traces, giving you a press. all sort of stuff can be happening when they don't work, dirt, spills, age (the copper can oxidize)try to use a pencil eraser on the copper pad locations to buff them up a bit, then basically wash the silicone pad (carefully where the carbon is). Also, take a look at the case that the buttons protrude through and make sure they aren't gunked up which might cause a button to stick. I have had other remotes that "don't work" where I discovered a button was stuck, preventing everything from working If all of that fails, I might have one somewhere I can send to you, not sure, I'd have to look. Are they the same as the Radios? I really don't use them. Seriously, I guess what is being asked is that podcast series be brought in by the LMS plugin similar to a music album - first song at the top. I can see the logic in that. Personally, I haven't been using the reorder method, and I haven't been using bookmarks (maybe I should). I have just been going into "recently played", noting which episode I last listened to, then going into the series and navigating to the next one. But, that doesn't address "the play the next one after current one finishes" desire, which was in one of the previous threads, so maybe I should take the time to reorder and bookmark. Agree, but the order of the episodes is a LMS thing, and we are just using Material's select and drag and drop capabilities to reorder. So, it's probably more of a LMS thing to address. I thought the same thing at first, but then when I came to my senses and realized, say a season of 10, 1hour episodes (10 hours of listening) could be reordered in under a minute, rather than asking a developer to spend his time on a sort, I decided not to ask :) Jim Redrum's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=33806 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=115702 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

When you go to the LMS UI, do you see both touches as players you can select? A few things to try: 1) Make sure you are doing a factory reset of the badly behaving Touch. Press the little button on the back until you get a reset message, or go to settings->advanced->factory reset->continue 2) If the non connecting touch is on wifi, try on ethernet 3) If both touches are ethernet, try swapping them, see if the problem follows the player. Re: [slim] Can't connect
I think I have to apologize for the over simplification in my previous post. I tried not to. I tend to think of thing in terms of the physics of the carrier, and maybe the affect on an amplitude modulated signal (exposing my age). While maybe relevant, it's way too simplified to consider it a way to solve things with regard to the complex wide band multichannel digital modulation that is occurring. Way too many bits and bytes flying around :) I think I started out as a "try this and maybe it will indicate..." approach. I tend to try to narrow things down to try to solve them. It does make me curious to what exactly is wifi6 doing that is detrimental to our sb radios, and does it affect other older wifi devices? Sure, I would consider anything "undesirable" as the 'I' (interference) part of RFI. I worked in an industry where we developed analog RF products (infant monitors) but I was by no means the RF expert, I was more the analog/digital electronic guy that just tried to understand the voodoo that the real RF engineers were involved with. So I really only have a cursory knowledge, although I did have to solve EMI problems in my non RF designs (usually with their help :)) I truly don't have a detailed understanding of wifi6 or most aspects of networking and how or why it messes with our radios, but fundamentally I would think that any time you and increase the signal of the desirable and decrease the signal of the undesirable, you would eventually reach a threshold where the undesirable has no impact (unless of course the undesirable was so strong that this point could not be reached). Think of the analogy of sound. You are a big room and someone you are standing right next to you is yelling at you, and you can barely hear your beloved sb playing your favorite song in the far corner of the room. Walking toward the sb increases your ability to enjoy your song and eventually you are no longer aware you are being yelled at :) I do agree that perhaps a transient RFI event caused his outage (as he had said it had been working all along), and when it finally went away he was able to connect. That's why I mentioned using the wifi analyzer tool, to see if his network was being stepped on. Regardless, lets hope his connection problem is solved! If only spectrum analyzers were affordable :) If RFI was suspected, I would imagine that moving the radio to the "opposite side" of the router should tell you if this is the case. Example, if the radio is on the east side of the router, move it to the west, same with above/below. RF energy decreases as the square of the distance (double the distance > 1/4 the power), so with the wifi range of the router, I would think moving away from any (unknown) point source (or even just closer to the router) would cause the RFI to be insignificant and the radio work as expected. Unless of course the unknown source is very powerful. I'll stop there :) Robb, you caused me to reread the op's posts, and I am thinking that he somehow resolved his issues and is up and running. It's been 2 days and he hasn't been back where his messages were pretty frequent before. Re: [slim] Can't connect
In addition to the above thoughts, if you are curious to see what "may" be happening regarding a neighbor's network and possible interference. I use a free android app called "wifi analyzer" (maybe available on apple, or similar?) The image below shows my 2.4 Ghz network (redrumnet) - signal strength and channels occupied, along with my neighbor's "Tate" (lower in signal strength, and different channels). My neighbor to the other side is not detected. So, mine is obviously very clean and I would not expect any issue with interference, but if you had allot of other networks at close to the same signal strength, occupying some/all of the channels your network does, then what Robb and Paul mention might be a factor. Obviously, use the app where the radio is stationed. Not saying this is any kind of solution, but it helps determine if interference could be a contributor. 36368 Jim +---+ |Filename: Screenshot_20211207-151054.png | |Download: http://forums.slimdevices.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=36368| +---+ Redrum's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=33806 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=115533 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] Preferred hardware?
Alot of people are building their own with pi's, and others are buying other devices (polyvection, etc), but I still have a soft spot for the sb devices, and as you say, they have been affordable. I think feel they were just superbly designed and engineered (with the exception of a couple achillies heels). I have been buying them up when I see a nice one cheap. I started with duets/receivers, then on to touch, boom, radios. I agree with Paul, the radio was last to own and most loved (for casual listening). The battery is a game changer. Didn't know I needed one until I had one. Heck, when you can get a radio around $50 USD why not. Often you can find some that have been barely used (dug out of closet) I also agree @waldo, the receivers I have, most are in a box, but a couple still in use. Since you run ethernet, a receiver would be fine, especially coupled with an outboard dac. The touch sounds good with it's dac, but better with a good outboard. I have found receivers to be sketchy on wifi (with non ideal signal). There is also alot of talk of the wifi failing on radios, although mine are all fine. And like Paul said, your power supplies may need replacing. I added a Schitt BiFrost (about $500USD at the time) to a modest system in my cabin that is a touch->arcam 60wpc integrated->Klipsch KG1.5 bookshelves. I ran the analog from the touch to one set of inputs, and digital from the touch to the Schitt via coax, then analog to another input on the amp, thereby being able to A/B real time. The touch DAC isn't bad but the difference is significant. Best way for me to describe it is the music "came to life". I then compared the schitt to audio through an Oppo BDP-105D on my home system (excellent D/A, in it's time the 105 D/A upgrade was about $600 over the 103.) and I could not tell a significant difference The advice to audition one if you can is good, and A/B to the transporter. Ive been listening to the FLAC stream through radio now playing on a competent system (touch, decent schitt dac, 60wpc Arcam integrated, older Klipsch bookshelf speakers with a small goldenear sub) and it sounds quite good. The "gain" has definitely increased, although it might still be a bit below a few others I listen to- RP FLAC, Planet Radio US, etc. But quite livable. Switching stations should not cause a huge volume increase/decrease. 3) I just turned it up when Supertramp "school" played. A good audition song. Sounded real good loud (louder than I would normally listen). I quickly queued up my ripped copy without touching the volume, and found the volume levels to be similar (no replay gain used) and the sound quality was very similaras well (to my aging ears) For what it's worth.no complaints, nice work Jim! Flac Stream - using Paul's radio now playing plugin - new order played, then talk talk "it's my life" artwork in sync (talk talk) - stream stopped, say 10 seconds, new order played again, but artwork remained for talk talk (frozen), then talk talk again, then the next song (dylan?) still with talk talk artwork. powered radio on and off - stream played but still talk talk artwork. restarted lms - jimi hendrix with correct artwork. Re: [slim] Testers wanted
Hi Jim; Listening and enjoying extensively since you recruited us. I am wondering how you got a hold of my collection though :) I am wondering if you are interested on observations regarding content and your song selection algorithms If no, please ignore...I noticed a couple of things: 1) Same artists occur multiple times within a few hours. Yesterday it was McCartney and Dylan, and . McCartney was 3 times in, say 3 hours. Maybe it was because of solo vs Wings. 2) I like the genre segments, but seems to dwell in one for a quite a while. There was a jazz/fusion segment a couple days ago (Miles Davis, Weather Report, etc) that lasted a long time. The day after it was Disco/Funk/Soul. I wonder if someone might tune in, listen for a while, and not realize how diverse your station is and think "oh, this is a Jazz station" Don't get me wrong I LOVE hearting all of it. I was part of the "Disco Sucks" group when I was younger, but have grown to appreciate it I think my previous comment about you liking clapton :) was a combo of the above. It was in a blue segment, and selected Clapton solo, Derek and the Dominos (a fav), Clapton and BB King, Blind Faith. Finally, I heard Arzachel...wow! I don't think I have ever heard that on internet radio. Hawkwind maybe :D I really enjoyed hearing that again. I have it on vinylsomewhere Thanks again for some great listening Jim Redrum's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=33806 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=115087 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

You don't need a "computer" (as in mac or PC) you can install LMS on a raspberry pi single board computer (less than $50 USD), plug it into your router, connect your touch. Think of it as an "accessory" to turbo charge your touch :) LMS provides a significant amount of features, function, and services over mysb.com Trust me/us, you will enjoy the touch even more running off LMS. mysb.com has not had new development in years, it exists as a legacy service, and therefore can be limited in functionality. Re: [slim] Testers wanted
I spent the day yesterday non critical listening on a sb radio. Loved the widely varied content. Spooky Tooth's version of "I am the Walrus"? Where else you going to hear that? Great cover. My listening time (10am - 5pm EST) seemed slightly Clapton weighted at first, not that that was a problem. He was/is in so many bands and collaborations. :) The one thing I noticed (on the Radio, not critical listening) is the gain seemed quite low compared to many other internet radio streams. Take Radio Paradise for example. The only "problem" is causes is the volume shock switching back to the higher gain stations after listening to a lower one. I have always been curious how different stations determine what to set their signal "gain" at. Thank you for the station by the way. I'll happily be listening again! I was just offering my observations of a 3b+ (1GB) and 4 (2GB). I don't notice the difference, but because I don't pay attention, probably because a 3b+ has worked fine for me. I just checked and I have about 16,000 tracks, 1,300 albums in my library. The last rescan (update, not wipe and rescan) took about 7 minutes. My server is a pi 3b+ with a 2TB USB HDD (not solid state). I have it setup with the LMS data and cache on a third partition on the SD card (helps in recovery from power failures). Explaining a bit more (since you are new to picore). I have my library "master" on my PC's. I use SAMBA on picore (allows access to the pi HDD) and freefilesync (free PC software) to sync my library on the PC to the Pi HDD. So, I rip an new album to the PC, fix the tags, run ffs, then rescan. One nice benefit is I also use Samba/ffs to backup my critical PC files (photos, documents, etc) to the pi HDD. I also have a cabin with an identical setup, so I have "off site" backup/redundancy. All of that for $100 (pi and HDD) per location - thank you pcp team and this community!! :D Back to your post. I don't know the mechanisms of a scan (maybe someone in the know can explain), but i image that scan data is paged back and forth between the RAM and SD (cache). Could this be a dynamic page size (based on available RAM) and occur faster with more RAM? I don't know. Like I said, it doesn't matter how long a scan takes for me. I'm not 100% clear on what you are trying to do, what you are building, perhaps you could clarify. Post your goal here and we will help you get there Finally, $50 CAD is about $40 USD, sounds like a nice deal! I'd buy it :) Jim Redrum's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=33806 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=114874 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss
