[Elecraft] K3: Anyone need help with the switch-customization (macro) feature?

2009-10-28 Thread Wayne Burdick
Some of us get a little woozy thinking about creating macros on
products that offer this capability. And yet: this feature is perfect
for automating multiple switch presses on your K3.

If you're hesitant to try it and need a little help with the details,
feel free to email me privately, or to post your question on the web,
or of course you can email k3support. No question is too simple.

Our goal is to make this so easy that everyone can take advantage of
it. We'll keep improving the instructions and samples based on your
feedback.

This is a great idea for two macros that are related. Thanks for the

[Elecraft] K3 macro M4 tap/hold

2009-10-28 Thread Paul Kirley
Wayne sed:
When you assign an Mx switch to a macro (or as a menu shortcut), the
firmware checks to see if that Mx switch now has *both* tap and hold
functions assigned. If not, it sets both of them to the same
assignment (the macro or the menu shortcut). This avoids some
potential side effects. You can always assign both tap and hold
functions to a single Mx switch at any time.

An Mx switch that is assigned to a macro or a menu shortcut is
temporarily unavailable for message play. To restore it to message
play, select CW mode, then tap Mx, tap REC, then tap Mx again. It will
now function for message play in both CW/DATA and voice modes (if you
have the DVR).

***

Thank you for that explanation. After a bit of thought, I have realized
that it implies that a pair of toggle macros, such as I created to
switch to and from QRP, ought to be both assigned to the same Mx switch
(one to tap, one to hold), rather than to two different Mx switches.

So I have now assigned my two macros to M4T and M4H and am happy with the
result.

I've never heard such a rumor. I DO KNOW FOR SURE that several very serious
multi-op contest stations have converted to 100% K3's.

[Elecraft] CQWW SSB observations

2009-10-28 Thread Gary and Kathleen Pearse
I was offered a chair at the recent KL7RA M/M CQWW effort, so I drove
550 miles
as quickly as possible to get set up with my K3. The other four rigs
were all
IC-781's. I had opped locally with them during the last Solar Cycle.
Since then,
Rich relocated and built a new station on the Kenai Peninsula to the
south.
There's much better propagation from KL7 from that location, and his
scores will
improve.

We put my K3 on the 80M spot feeding an Alpha 87 into a 4-square
dipole array,
and ran it the full 48 hrs when propagation allowed without
malfunction. Most
of the ops (7) had no major problems interfacing with the rig. Some were
skeptical at first but learned the important controls, and a minority
just
passed it off as a one-owner radio not suitable for M/M Contesting
due to it's
initial complexity.

The NB, and occasionally the NR, were required on a westerly heading
due noise
re-radiation from the nearby 160M vertical. They both worked very
well. I
adjusted the AGC slope and threshold, and we all set the filter
offset and width
to our own needs to provide best audio. Both of my 2.7 and 2.1
filters were used
as required. We never used the second receiver with duplicate
filters. The
recently installed optional voice keyer worked perfectly, as did the
VOX,
providing the adjacent station noise was compensated for by setting
the VOX
floor in the CONFIG menu. The Manual was available for everyone to
refer to, as
was I.

The biggest complaints and temporary problems arose from the Tap vs.
Hold
functions (how much is each, etc.), and inadvertently touching the wrong
button(s). Nobody really got too lost, but there were some anxious
moments as
they figured out what had happened. Most were used to bigger simpler
radios, so
the somewhat cramped controls gave some the fits. I wished to try it
on the more
crowed bands and in the huge pileups (especially JA's on 15), but
that was not
to be.

What might be helpful for new ops would be a way to selectively
enable certain
functions, and lock/disable the unneeded. Also, an "OP preference"
control list
would be nice so one could quickly return to their favorite settings
after
following others in the chair.

Rumor has it (second hand) that some Contesters are now shying away
from the K3
due to it's complexity, but not necessarily it's performance. As a
relatively
experienced owner I had no problem running what I consider to be
excellent
radio. I've owned or operated most of the modern rigs sold in the
last 15 years,
and find the K3 (and my IC-765) to be the best of the group.

[Elecraft] K1 for Sale

2009-10-28 Thread jimimaxi2

I have a  K1 for sale. Less than one year old. Almost a 10 of 10 - one very
slight paint ding on top of right side.

80m and 15m two band board. KBT1 Internal battery option.

Works nicely.

I am looking to sell in order to buy a K2. I love building kits.

I am asking $400 + S/H (Or good offer.) to USA only.

Re: [Elecraft] Digital Output Line in ACC

2009-10-28 Thread Craig D. Smith
<> DIGOUT1 is an open-drain output that can be used to turn on loads by
<> pulling them to ground. The DIGOUT1 line is controlled from the menu
(CONFIG:DIGOUT1).
<> DIGOUT1 is "per-band" (and also "per-antenna" if you have a KAT3 ATU
installed).

Thanks for the idea, Wayne! I'm starting to get the station ready for CW
SS. I run two XMIT antennas for SS, a horizontal G5RV and an all-band
vertical, switching frequently between them. It's always been somewhat of a
nuisance to see which one is selected by looking at the ant 1, ant 2 legend
on the K3. My K3 is off to the side of the monitor and keyboard and
requires turning my head and refocusing. The legends are monochromatic and
very small and I'm old and wear reading glasses. This gets tiresome,
especially at 3 AM. When I read your post earlier today, it occurred to me
that DIGOUT1 could solve this problem. Here's what I did:

I built a custom LED display on a small piece of PCB which is mounted
directly under my computer monitor. I used two green rectangular LEDs and
two red rectangular LEDs. The green ones are glued end-to-end making a long
slender horizontal bar. The red ones are also glued-end-to end making a
slender vertical bar. They are configured in a capital T configuration,
with the green on top. The green represents the horizontal antenna and the
red the vertical. A twisted shielded pair cable takes DIGOUT1 and return
from the ACC connector and +12V from the K3 12V out to the PCB. Two 2N3904s
and 4 resistors on the PCB accomplish the switching logic and LED drive.
Took only a couple of minutes to configure the DIGOUT1 signal to "ON" on
each band when ant 1 is selected.

Have it installed now, and it is a welcome addition! Not only is the
display now in my field of vision, I have both a color clue and an
orientation clue (horizontal and vertical lines) as to which antenna is
selected. Bring on the SS ;>) Thanks again, Wayne, for the idea and
especially for all the flexibility you've built into the K3!

Re: [Elecraft] Central Tendency of K2 PCB Solder Pad Widths?

2009-10-28 Thread Don Wilhelm
Jeff,

You may be splitting hairs, but I prefer a 1.60 mm ( 1/16 inch) chisel
tip for most of my soldering.
The flat on the tip allows sufficient area to conduct heat onto most
solder pads, and work well for me.

More important than the size of the tip is to heat both the solder pad
and the component lead so you can see the solder flow out to an almost
invisible edge on both the pad and the lead. If that happens in less
than 2 seconds, the iron is too hot, but if it takes longer than 3
seconds, the iron temperature is too low. The temperature required will
vary depending on the surface area of the solder pad and the 'weight' of
the component lead - the larger areas will conduct heat away from the
point to be soldered more quickly and require a tip with more mass or a
higher temperature.

Experiment a bit until you are comfortable with the task.

Re: [Elecraft] Central Tendency of K2 PCB Solder Pad Widths?

2009-10-28 Thread Ron D'Eau Claire
I use a 1.6 mm chisel tip on my Hakko 936 soldering station for 99.9% of my
circuit board work including building and modifying the Elecraft K2, KX1, XV
transverters, and a variety of mini-modules, homebrewing lots of stuff and
repairing commercial gear.

The challenge is to transfer heat efficiently. Whoever wrote the Elecraft
doc on soldering was trying to give readers some way to judge whether a
given tip is "about right", but don't take 85%-95% of the trace width too
seriously.

Normally I place the flat side of the 1.6 mm chisel tip right against the
joint to be soldered and then add solder. If the pad is extremely tiny, I
just use the side of the chisel tip.

Solder should flow around the joint in about three seconds if the heat
transfer is correct. The danger to the pc board trace is in letting the iron
sit on the trace too long. Eventually the heat will debond the trace from
the board. That has very little to do with the temperature of the iron (as
long as it's hot enough to melt solder) and almost everything to do with the
length of time the iron is on the trace. Many folks make the mistake of
using too low of an iron temperature, requiring a long "dwell" time on the
trace, and are disappointed to see it debond even though the iron
temperature was at 700F or below. I normally solder at 750F or 800F.

I switch tips (or irons) when soldering to a large surface area of copper,
such as the ground plane covering one side of some boards or a coaxial
connector. A whole side of a pc board plated with copper or the big fittings
on coax connectors will immediately absorb and dissipate the heat. A large
tip helps transfer heat quickly, but you should still have an iron capable
of delivering the calories of heat needed. For example, my favorite coaxial
cable connector soldering iron, especially for soldering the braid to a
SO-239 connector, is a Weller 275 watt D-550 soldering gun I've had since
about 1955.

(All I have to do is wave that big gun near most circuit boards and I'm sure
I can see them cringe!)

Yes, LP-Bridge works very well.
Only issus I met is when I set K3's RS232 port for PTT/CW,and use
SpectraVue(SDR-IQ),
because SpectraVue always set RTS/DTR to high. so K3 will enter the transmit
mode.
Several months ago, I wrote an email to Larry N8LP, ask if it is
possible to provide a function to set given virtual port's DTR/RTS to low.
Larry told me he will put this into requirement list.

Message bank 1 and bank 2 selection (REC hold) is an independent
operation. It just determines which of the two banks are available for
use with M1-M4. But as I mentioned above, once you've assigned a given
Mx switch to macros or menu shortcuts, it is not available for
messages. The others will be.

M4 tap and hold would both produce the macro. To get repeating
messages with M4 you'd have to recover its message function as
explained above.

[Elecraft] New Macro for Audio

2009-10-28 Thread van fair
Many of us old-timers do not hear the same with both ears. Is there any way
with this new system to make the audio from VFO A (both speakers) be louder or
softer in the right ear than it is in the left and vice versa. This could be a
1 time adjustment that adds Xdb to the left or the right The volume control
could then take care of the level with 1 speaker slightly louder than the other
when heard by a person with normal hearing, When using two receivers, each
already has its own volume control. Anybody else have this problem??? It is
mostly needed when using dual speakers. Van W4GIW

Re: [Elecraft] [K3] dual RX anomaly?

2009-10-28 Thread David Gilbert

The subreceiver is much better shielded than the main. When I first got
my K3 (#2623) last winter I had loud spurs all over the place in the
main receiver (even after carefully optimizing cable placement) but the
very few that I could hear in the subreceiver were weak.

SIG RMV took care of everything, of course.

[Elecraft] Re: Elecraft moving this week to la rger quarters

2009-10-28 Thread Johnny Siu
Hello Eric,

Congratulation!!

Again, classic business school successful case.  A company with stable income
and innovative products now takes the opportunity in the downturn to negotiate
a good commercial due.

As a facilities manager / chartered surveyor by profession, as a matter of
curiosity,  could you please advise me what % of rent / price reduction has
been for the past 18 months in your locality.  From your message about the
relocation, it seems that the rent / price drops substantially.

主題: [Elecraft] Elecraft moving this week to larger quarters

Thank to the huge response by our customers this year (on the K3 and all
of our other products) we are moving the company to a larger facility.
2x the space for about the same cost as where we are now. (This is a
great time to negotiate for commercial office / R&D / mfg. space..)

We will be moving Thursday and Friday this week (and through the weekend.)

Please give us a little extra time to respond to emails and tech
support/parts requests for the next several days. Our sales department
will be 100% available for email and phones both Thursday and Friday.
Our tech support group will be on-line for email the whole time and
available on the phone for some of Thursday, but not Friday. Of course
the web page and order form will be 100% available.  Any calls or emails
we don't immediately respond to will be handled first thing next week.

We hope to be up and running full steam this Monday, Nov 2. :-)

Here's a picture of the new building:

[Elecraft] K3 macro M4 tap/hold

2009-10-28 Thread Paul Kirley
I have just updated my K3 Utility and Firmware to 1.2.10.27 and 3.52,
respectively.

I wrote two simple macros, which I put into the Utility's
Macro1 and Macro2 spots. They are:
Pwr=4   pc004;
and
Pwr=100 pc100;
These are intended to save wear and tear on the encoder when switching
to and from QRP.

In the K3's MACRO CONFIG menu item, I assigned
Macro1 to M3H (M3 hold)
and
Macro2 to M4H (M4 hold)

But I now find that either tapping or holding M3 or M4 executes a macro.
Should this be?

BTW, I had previously filled in both banks of CW memories M1 - M4 with short
messages, and didn't bother to erase them. I now find that either in Bank 1
or in Bank 2, pressing M3 or M4 results in macro execution. M1 and M2 continue
to produce the assigned CW, differently in Bank 1 and Bank 2, as intended.

In general, I find the procedure for accessing messages and macros with
M1 - M4 to be confusing. As I understand it, holding a message M4 should
(and did, before macroing) repeat the message on CW, while it is necessary
to hold REC before being able to access the other message M4. On the other
hand, accessing the second group of 4 macros should proceed merely by holding
M buttons.

Which result should holding M4 produce, if a macro is assigned to M4H while a
Bank 1 message is assigned to M4T? Repeated message, or macro execution?

2009-10-28 Thread Larry - K2GN
Sure.
I have several macros in the Commander module of DXLab that control the K3.
As a fact of fact, the are 2 sliders built into Commander for the filters.
There 16 buttons and 4 sliders that can be programmed for use from the
Commander.
Great tool.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 Programming & macros

If you assign, for example, the PF1 function to a macro, then you can send
the string "SWH45;" command from your program (or my program!) to simulate
HOLDing the PF1 key. I just tried it. The macro executed, and its label
appeared in VFO B.

Subject: [Elecraft] Elecraft moving this week to larger quarters

Super. Well deserved. Thanks for the excellent and rapid service your company
provides.
But how did I get so lucky to order the accessories for my K2 last week without
knowing you would be moving? Stuff should be here tomorrow.

Regards and best of luck in your new facility,
Chuck, KE9UW

Re: [Elecraft] k3 MACRO

2009-10-28 Thread Dick Dievendorff
Diversity On is DV1; not DV2;

I don't think you want to also link VFOs with diversity on. As I understand
diversity, both main and sub receivers are controlled by VFO A.

Therefore you shouldn't need to equalize or link the VFOs.

If in a subsequent macro you want to turn on VFO linking, it's LN1; not LN2;

So to turn on diversity you need this macro: DV1;

There's an example that includes turning on diversity in the "Sample Macros"
section of K3 Utility Help. It is in the help text for the command tester/K3
Macros tab page. I put all the programmer's reference samples in Help and
you can copy and paste them in to your Macro Editor.

This sounds like he is not talking about the concentric knobs on the

It sounds like the push on knobs used for the four mechanical encoders
just to the left of the VFO knob. Those push on knobs fit very snugly
and he may not be pushing them on all the way.

That cable is for inserting the mojo.

The Allen wrench is needed to remove the VFO knob to reveal the secret
mojo input connector.

After a week or so he sent me two little envelopes, one with a TMP cable, one

[Elecraft] (no subject)

2009-10-28 Thread Jim Harris

Rich,

Thank you for your thoughtful response. I've copied and pasted your comments
into a new
email as I get the digest and cannot answer directly.

To make a long story short your suggestion #3 below led me to turn
CONFIG:PTT-KEY to OFF-OFF
and that seems to have corrected the situations. I would have never guessed
that since I
had not checked to send PTT through DTR/RTS on COM1 that the K3 would need to
be told to
not look for something that wasn't there. And also, why would that affect
something in the
radio that was totally unrelated. But, alas, greater minds than mine have
stumbled over
smaller things.

My thanks to everyone, including Wayne, who expressed an interest in this.

Have a good day and 73.

Jim,

This is a bit of a stab in the dark, and may or may not have anything to
do with what is happening to you, but exactly how many methods are you
using to do PTT? It sounds as if you may have two or perhaps even three
methods enabled simultaneously, which is not a good idea and might be
contributing to the problem by confusing the firmware somehow if the
hardware and software commands are getting crossed due to slight timing
differences.

1) MMTTY is controlling PTT on DTR/RTS on COM4, which you have connected
to the PTT pin on the ACC connector via a keying circuit.

2) You are using MMTTY's Radio command, which means MMTTY will be
sending TX; and RX; commands over COM1 unless you have deliberately
blanked out the RX and TX boxes in the Commands pane of the MMTTY Radio
command dialog box.

3) If you happen to have the PTT box checked for DTR/RTS in the MMTTY
Radio command dialog (top right), MMTTY is also controlling DTR/RTS on
COM1, and if you have the K3's CONFIG:PTT-KEY set to anything other than
OFF-xxx, this would also be commanding the K3's PTT on and off.

Since you have method 1 implemented via the ACC connector, you don't
really need MMTTY's Radio command at all, at least not for purposes of
PTT. If you are using Radio command in order to get radio frequency
information into MMTTY for logging purposes, you might consider:

(a) unchecking the PTT box for DTR/RTS in the MMTTY Radio command dialog
box; and if this doesn't work or it is already unchecked
(b) clearing out the contents of the Rx and Tx commands in the MMTTY
Radio command dialog box in order to stop MMTTY from trying to control
PTT via software.

Hope this helps.

73,
Rich VE3KI

[Elecraft] 1 button that issues two command strings

2009-10-28 Thread van fair
TRX manager has added 4 more macro buttons for a total of 8 to the K3 version
and each has the ability to have one button send two different command strings.
One when pushed the first time and a different command string the second time.
The set up is done in TRX manager and not in the K3 system. You right click on
the TRX macro button you want to program and a window comes up with two command
lines. In the first you type the commands for what you want to accomplish with
the first push and on the second command line you enter the string that you
want to accomplish on the second push. There is a box you check that is labeled
OFF.

I use this for a tune sequence. I want the K3 to transmit 5 watts when I hit
the macro button. It will continue to transmit until I hit it again. With the
second push it will stop transmitting at 5 watts and return my power level to
40 watts. This allows me to use low power to tune the antenna tuner and the
linear with very low power and then tune the linear at full power using the
tune control on the K3. 40 watts of drive is 1500 watts from the linear. The
two command strings I use are:
PC005;SWH16;
SWH16;PC040;

I dont think this will work with a single macro button straight into the K3 but
Wayne may be able to discern what Laurent has done in TRX manager and set up
this same dual command capability in the K3 macro system

Maybe just tighten them a bit more? Best way to get them really deep
on the shaft is to hit 'em with a hammer :-) (Please don't do that.
Sometimes I feel like you can't make any comment on a reflector
without an appropriate disclaimer)

Shoot, I haven't any trouble with my original concentric knobs
(shipped on ser 2091). I didn't pull a hamstring tightening them
down, and they don't fall off either :-)

Re: [Elecraft] K3 potentiometer dead spots?; Concentric Knob replacements

2009-10-28 Thread Eric Swartz - WA6HHQ, Elecraft
Four encoder knobs are warranted for life. A couple of months ago,
probably after you received your replacements, we changed the knob
formulation to include a 10% glass fiber fill, which makes them almost
impossible to break. In testing them we actually ended up stripping the
hex head without breaking them on the set screw when trying to -way-
over tighten them.

All new K3s shipped for several months have these knobs. Contact
pa...@elecraft.com and they will send you a new set of the 4 AF/RF
concentric knobs at no charge. (Two ea. small inner and two ea. outer
knobs.)

[Elecraft] [K3] quick diversity set up question

2009-10-28 Thread David F. Reed
Sometimes I manage to confuse myself with simple things; this seems to
be such a case...

I am practicing setting up for the 160 M. Contest (and of course doing
some DXing meanwhile).

I want to be using diversity reception, with a dipole on one antenna,
and a vertical on the other. I want to be able to (single button push)
select which antenna I am transmitting on, either split or not, all the
while keeping diversity reception going on those two antennas.

I would prefer using ANT1 and ANT2 as opposed to other (AUX) RX antenna
inputs, solely for convenience of the UHF connectors.

My confusion?

I cannot figure out how to do it, or if I have succeeded in doing it
correctly (like, which antenna is on the sub). I think after that, it
is just a question of engaging diversity reception mode, and split, with
the additional button press while tuning VFO B for the transmit
frequency and press again?

[Elecraft] k2 vco alignment problem

2009-10-28 Thread af4lb
I finally got my k2 #05233 completed and started the alignment process. I ran
into some issues and decided to go back and re-check the tests for phases I and
II. The tests during their construction were all ok and on the money. This time
when I got to the VCO alignment stage the following occurs. Checking the
voltage at r30 at 4000 hz was adjustable to 6.0 vdc with no problem. The tone
heard on my headset warbles slowly then faster until the tone gets solid. Any
movement of the VFO kills the tone but the voltages stay solid on 80 meters.
When checking the other bands I get 8.3 vdc and it does not change with L30, or
the VFO. The tone SOMETIMES starts the slow warble thru to solid and the
voltages are back to the readings during the construction! Using the schematic
have traced the problem, maybe, to T5. When I touch the transformer the tone
goes away if it is there and does not come back until I cycle the power to the
rig. I can hear changes in my headset when probing around
the T5 areas. This is the only location I hear any changes. I have removed the
T5, reworked the leads and reinstalled it with no change. I have verified the
proper windings per the manual. Thanks in advance for your input. Typical
readings on 40 m. 1.9 @ 7000 and 3.89 @7300.

[Elecraft] [K3] dual RX anomaly?

2009-10-28 Thread David F. Reed
I note an apparent anomaly with my K3 using dual RX...

say I tune to 24.953.43 with both main and sub; in the main RX I hear a
tone (apparently a spurious signal, as no antenna is connected). I do
not hear it on the sub receiver; if I swap A/B it stays with the main.
If I tune main or sub off slightly for a different pitch, it tracks main
only.

Is it possible I have a slight spur that only affects the main RX?

Any thoughts?

FWIW, its not a big problem; when I connect an antenna, it is barely
detectable through the noise.

Thoughts?

[Elecraft] MMARC (all K3) Special FunXpedition to Frankenstein MO for Halloween

2009-10-28 Thread Tom Hammond

As in a number of years past, members of the Mid-MO ARC (MMARC), Jefferson
City MO, will sponsor a Special FunXpedition to Frankenstein MO for
Halloween. We will operate Special Event Station W0O.

I had a really kewl image of the special QSL card to insert here, but I
can't attach it because the reflector won't accept file attachments or
embedded images, sorry!

We will begin operation (with luck) about 3 p.m. (2000Z) this Saturday
(October 31st) and run until about 8 a.m. (1300Z) on Sunday (November 1st)
morning. We will have two (2) stations, both Elecraft K3's, on the air as
long as there are QSOs to be made. One station will be CW and the other
will be SSB.

I don't have exact times/frequencies, but I'm kinda guessing we'll
(probably) TRY(!) to hang out around the following frequencies:

  CWSSB
80M 3545 3963
40M 7045 7245
30M 10125 10110
20M 14045 14330
15M 21045 21345
10M 28045 28345

Please try to work us while we're at Frankenstein... we have a GREAT
new QSL card made to confirm QSOs from this event. IF you work us,

___BE CERTAIN WE HAVE YOUR CALL, NAME AND QTH 'IN THE LOG'___...

We will QSL 100% for all contacts made, and YOU DO NOT have to send
anything(!) to us... no s.a.s.e., no 'green 'stamp', and (please) NO
QSL (we have no place to archive QSLs received and they will just get
in the way, sorry).

NOTE: QSLs will be mailed to your address AS SHOWN IN QRZ.COM!!! If
that address is NOT correct, now's a great time to fix that with the
FCC. And if you don't have time to fix it, BUT if you do work us,
___BE SURE to give the operator YOUR CURRENT MAILING ADDRESS___.

There will be yet another FunXpedition to Frankenstein MO as well...
the Warrensburg (MO) Area Amateur Radio Club Inc (WAARCI), will
operate Special Event station N0F from another site in Frankenstein MO
over the same approximate time period. I believe this group WILL
require, at least, an s.a.s.e. to obtain a confirmation QSL from N0F.
QSL contacts with N0F to WE0G at the address shown in QRZ.COM

Re: [Elecraft] Trying out the SPLIT macro...

2009-10-28 Thread Guy Olinger K2AV
'ends in "30"' is not particularly descriptive, nor did you list your
firmware version. New Macro material in programmer's guide material is going
to require utility 1.2.10.27 and at least beta firmware 3.52 in place.

I wouldn't spend anytime on anything trouble-shooting unless you are at
1.2.10.27 and 3.52. Field testers and pre-beta testers have been very busy
finding things and Wayne et al have been very busy with fixes on stuff
reported back from the 3.30's and new features.

IMHO everyone not specifically hanging on to the most recent production
firmware should go to utility 1.2.10.27 and public beta firmware 3.52. From
where I sit, there's a huge amount of work under the dam. After the
upgrade, a retest on any prior problem would be useful.

Just upgraded my last pre-beta to public 3.52. All seems well.

[Elecraft] K2 and split operation

2009-10-28 Thread John Warburton G4IRN
Hello group

With the K2, is there a way to have different Rx filter widths on VFOa and VFOb
when operating in split mode and switching between the two VFO's?

In a DX split pileup, it would be useful to be able to listen to DX on narrow
filter but listen to the pileup on a wide filter (in REV mode). It appears
that the filter bandwidth (XFIL) selection applies to both VFO's , unless
someone can confirm otherwise?

Thanks,

John G4IRN.

No... I'm fairly sure that no red LED means no transmit. Are you
making RF? Do you hear any side-tone? What sort of keying interface
are you using? Is VOX on?

Re: [Elecraft] [K3] K3 switch macro update

2009-10-28 Thread Richard Squire

My latest suggestion for a "toggleable" split macro (including SUB on/off):

SWT13;SWT13;SWH13;UPB5;RT0;XT0;SWT48;

I assigned it to PF1 - works flawlessly.
But you'll need the latest Utility.
Just loaded Utility 1.2.10.27 and FW MCU 3.52 - no problem!
This was my third download in 24 hours - looks like Wayne, Lyle etc. are
busy!

I used to stick to "regular" releases - but changing my mind has made my ham
life much more interesting.
Thanks again, Elecraft!

Richard - HB9ANM

I suppose it might be feasible to define pairs of "on" and "off"
macros and combine them into "toggleable" (?) switches (to save
buttons). I'm not sure how the current status could be represented on
the display, though.

I think that a complete macro "undo" is probably not feasible - there
are just too many variables.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 potentiometer dead spots?

2009-10-28 Thread Gary Hinson
I have James. The Width encoder [not a pot as such] on K3#2887
doesn't always respond while turning. Elecraft sent me a replacement
part though I haven't actually soldered it in yet - too busy using the
radio!

FWIW I've just had another failure of the little AF knob. All four
nested knobs were replaced already about 3 months ago due to the
originals cracking, but one of the new ones has also now cracked and
lost a chunk off the end. I think I saw a rumor here that new
stronger knobs (with metal collets?) were being ordered - does anyone
know if they are available yet, please?

Re: [Elecraft] K3 potentiometer dead spots?

2009-10-28 Thread Don Butler
James I had exactly the same problem, in my case with the cmp/pwr/mon
encoder only. In my case, the encoder shaft was "wobbly" ... lot's of
lateral play, and as I'd rotate it was intermittently nonresponsive. I
first thought it might be the knob, but found that that wasn't the case
after pulling the knob. I found that if I put downward leftward pressure on
the shaft as I rotated it the intermittents stopped, so continued to use the
rig.

I called support to ask for a replacement, thinking I could change the
encoder myself, but Dale, K6ZP, pointed out that desoldering the encoders
can be a tricky maneuver and suggested I return the rig for repair (they're
presoldered to the board in K3 kits). I sent it to Aptos, and he swapped
out all four encoders. It was a 3 week turnaround in my case.

Your comment about the better accuracy on the newer SNs if interesting. I
have two K3s ... SN2625 and SN3579 (brand new). the encoders on 3579 are
much tighter than 2635, which had encoders replaced just a few weeks ago
but they're both equally responsive as far as I can tell.

This is incorrect. Use #3 below. It's a menu item, and brings up a separate

3. Click on the Edit Macros button at the top of the screen. This brings

It's Edit, then choose Command Tester/K3 Macros..

[Elecraft] [Elecraft_K3] K3 switch macro ideas?

2009-10-28 Thread Paul Kirley
K9VUJ sed:
*
I'd like to be able to turn on the monitor without having to adjust
the monitor level up then down when I'm finished. When I forget and
leave the monitor level at say 27 and push hold the monitor control I
get feedback from the speaker when I transmit in SSB mode, requiring
me to go back and set level to zero.
*

I haven't run into this problem. I suspect that it has an easier
solution than a switch macro.

Try adjusting the AntiVOX setting to prevent feedback from the
speaker from getting into the transmit audio. It may do the job
even if you don't use VOX.

[Elecraft] K3 Beta Firmware Rev. 3.52: Switch Customization (e.g. SPLIT+2); Main/Sub AF Mixing

2009-10-28 Thread Wayne Burdick
K3 beta-test firmware revision 3.52 (with DSP rev. 2.43) is now
available. See full release notes below.

This revision allows you to automate often-used switch sequences using
"switch macros." For example, you could create a "SPLIT+2" function
that, with a single switch press, does A>B twice, enters SPLIT, and
moves VFO B up 2 kHz. Many other custom functions can be created. For
more examples and complete instructions, see K3 Utility's Help
information, or pages 4 & 5 of the latest K3 Programmer's Reference:

  http://www.elecraft.com/manual/K3_Pgmr%27s_Ref_Rev_C6.pdf

Please send any questions to k3supp...@elecraft.com. For instructions
on how to load beta firmware, see:

  http://www.elecraft.com/K3/k3_software.htm

 IMPORTANT

You must use the latest revision of K3 Utility to use switch macros.
Revision 1.2.10.27 can be found on the K3 Software page. The PC and
Mac versions are ready now; we expect to have the Linux version ready
shortly.

If you previously created macros using K3 field-test firmware, you'll
need to re-save your macros from the new version of K3 Utility, after
loading new firmware.

73,
Wayne
N6KR

* * *

MCU 3.52 / DSP 2.43 / K3 Utility 1.2.10.27, 10-28-2009

Misc. Improvements:

* Eliminated some audio artifacts noted during control changes.

* Eliminated interruption of transmitted CW signal when certain switches
were tapped, including RIT, during external keying.

* VFO LOCK PREVENTS COARSE STEPS VIA OFFSET CONTROL:
Normally, you can use the RIT/XIT offset control to move VFO A in coarse
steps if (1) RIT and XIT are both turned off, and (2) CONFIG:VFO OFS
is set to ON. Now, these conditions are overridden if the VFO is locked.

* AUTO-NOTCH IN SSB MODE EASIER TO TURN ON/OFF: The NTCH
switch now behaves differently in SSB mode. Tapping it turns auto notch
on-off, rather than cycling through off-auto-manual notch. (To turn on
manual notch in SSB mode, hold the NTCH/MANUAL switch.)

New Feature: Main/Sub AF Mixing Menu Entry

* AUDIO MIXING CONTROL ADDED: Normally, main receiver audio is
heard in the left audio channel, and sub in the right. Using the
CONFIG:L-MIX-R
menu entry, you can now put main in both channels while leaving sub in
only
one (or vice-versa, or even put both receivers in both channels).
Another
benefit of this change is that AFX (audio effects) can be used even
while the
sub receiver is turned on. (AFX, if turned on, will apply to any
receiver whose
audio is mapped both left and right.)

Notes: Applies only to non-diversity mode use of the sub receiver. (In
diversity mode, left/right differentiation is maximized for best
results.)
You’ll need stereo headphones or speakers to listen to stereo
separation and audio effects. Set CONFIG:SPKRS to 2 if using stereo
speakers. (Headphones will always work with stereo material unless
SPKRS is set to 1 *and* CONFIG:SPKR+PH is set to ON.)

New Feature: User-Defined Switch Functions (e.g., “SPLIT+2”)

* SWITCH MACROS: You can now program the K3’s PF1-2 and M1-M4
switches to execute K3 remote control sequences, or “macros.” They
are created and tested using K3 Utility (rev. 1.2.10.26 or later). Once
macros are finished, you can send them to the K3, where they
can be assigned to any programmable function switch. The K3
Programmer’s Reference, revision C6, has a number of sample macros
and further details.

Example: A>B, A>B, SPLIT, VFO B up 2 kHz, RIT/XIT off, assigned to PF1

To create a macro and assign it to a K3 front panel switch, you’ll
need to complete steps 1-8 below. Once you’ve been through the
process one time, you’ll find creating or modifying macros very easy.

1. Run K3 Utility.
2. Click on the Command Tester/K3 Macros tab.
3. Click on the Edit Macros button. This pops up the macro edit window.
4. In MACRO 1’s Macro Label field, enter the label “SPLIT+2”.
5. In the Macro Commands field, enter:

 SWT13;SWT13;FT1;UPB5;RT0;XT0;

(The number 5 in the “UPB5” command is not a value in kHz;
it is an index into a table of step sizes. UPB5 moves VFO B up 2 kHz,
DNB5 moves it down 2 kHz, etc. There are similar commands for
VFO A. For the full list, see the “DN” (down) command in the
Programmer’s Reference.)

6. Click on Send Macros 1-8 To K3.
7. At the K3, locate CONFIG:MACRO x menu entry, and tap ‘1’ if
the menu entry label is not already “MACRO 1”.
8. Hold PF1 to assign PF1 to MACRO 1. Exit the menu.

From then on, PF1 will flash “SPLIT+2” and execute the above sequence.

Note: M1-M4 cannot be used simultaneously for both message play
and macros. To revert an Mx switch back to message play, first
switch to CW mode, then tap Mx, tap REC, and tap Mx again. This
will also restore message play for DVR purposes (voice modes).

Remote Control Command Changes:

* MP COMMAND ACCESS ADDED TO: LCD ADJ, LCD BRT, LED BRT.
This allows creation of a switch macro that does LCD DIM/BRT, for

You can also use MP to control the new Main/Sub Mix menu entry.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 switch macro update

2009-10-28 Thread Ed Muns
Many people also have the SUB on while SPLIT, so would be a second button
tap if they want to turn the SUB off as well. Others turn off RIT during
SPLIT and would want that enabled again. So, there is reason to "undo" or
"reverse" some macros. Having a toggle function saves a Programmable
Function button.

That said, as you point out, not every command is a simple two-state
function and thus the toggle action may be ambiguous. However, for macros
that contain only toggle commands, then a Programmable Function button can
be a single button toggle for that macro. For example, this macro toggles
SPLIT/SUB/RIT on and off:

SWT13;SWT13;SWH13;SWT48;SWT45;RC

Of course, for those who want to move VFO-B to an offset frequency or
explicitly turn RIT/XIT on or off (rather than toggling it), a macro
"toggle" feature is needed.

Re: [Elecraft] KX-1: Broadcast breakthrough on 20m

2009-10-28 Thread Guy Olinger K2AV
I have to confirm that.

It would not surprise me if the voltage on the front end of a radio device
went higher than a volt given conditions and antenna, particularly so in
Europe.

One time quite a while ago at W4BVV in northern Virginia, we measured 5
volts RF on an oscilloscope attached to the feedline coming in from a 3
element 40m yagi up 70m pointed at Europe. Was back in the day of megawatt
transmitters into 20 plus dB curtain arrays from Radio Moscow and VOA and
such.

On that band we put a series trap in front of the RX tuned to 7125 to quiet
things 7050 and below. That made a difference even for Collins 75S gear.

I still see very high miscellaneous signal voltage on antennas for other
frequencies at locations well distanced from metropolitan areas.

But it doesn't cost another button - the action to turn SPLIT off is
already there!

Unless you had your VFOs linked, they would probably not have been on
the same frequency before you invoked the macro anyway, so setting
them back to the same frequency may not put things back to the way
they were before.

Macros, by definition, are special instructions that expand into a
sequence of discrete instructions, and so are not stateful - you don't
"turn a macro on", you "execute" it.

Can you more clearly articulate what action you might take, after
turning the split off, that would require the VFO B frequency to be
something specific?

Re: [Elecraft] K3 MTBF

2009-10-28 Thread Matt Zilmer
Please also note that SW is a component in MTBF, for embedded systems
(SDRs) like the K3. This is also true in consumer electronics (where
I'm stuck for the moment). We figure in SW failures as a statistical
value, but don't really count them as a full failure unless a unit is
"bricked" and becomes unusable. When you make millions of anything,
this does happen and needs to be counted. The case is quite different
for a unique and lower-volume product like the K3.

For consumer products that need an unanticipated power cycle or reset
to start working again, we assign a fractional failure. Usually 0.2
or 0.3 depending on the Annoyance Quotient to the end-user.

Many consumer products have SW MTBF in the hundreds of hours because
release intervals prevent thorough debugging and bug fixing. That's
one factor, but so is software complexity. From anecdotal evidence
(I'm not an Elecraft insider, so it's mostly from this list), it looks
like the collective MTBF of the K3 due only to software has a much
better record than any consumer appliance has. At least that I've
heard about.

It goes without saying that the hardware platform is bulletproof. But
when something fails, it would probably occur first in switches and
controls, followed by connectors, and last place would likely be the
electronics itself.

Be glad Wayne, Lyle, Eric, the Aptos crew, and a large assemblage of
Field Testers all try to break the K3 firmware in advance of most
releases.

Now - I wonder if Wayne or Eric have any data collected on MTBF I
bet that's one of those trade secret thingies :)

[Elecraft] K3 Screen

2009-10-28 Thread Robert Beard
Hi Joe,

Each of these apps requires its own serial port - a dilemma, since the K3
has only one

One solution is to install LP_Bridge. (See the LP-PAN site.)
This app connects SDR to the K3 and provides three additional virtual ports.
We are using it here at the ranch to run SDR, Skimmer, and N1MM simultaneously.

[Elecraft] Using the K3 From ZF2UL

2009-10-28 Thread Bob Garrett
Greetings,

I had the opportunity to operate once again from Grand Cayman from October 18 -
22. In the past, I carried my FT-1000MP, IC-746 PRO and this year my K3.
Previously, I used Pelican cases to transport the tranceivers. This year, I
used one of Rose Copp's bags and carried the K3, keyer and mic as a carry on.

The trip to and from were 100% uneventful which is a good thing. TSA was a
breeze and customes asked no questions. While operating, the K3 was an
absolute joy. Just sat there and operated flawlessly. I operated both SSB and
CW mostly on the 15, 17, 20 and 30 meter bands.

A big thanks to Elecraft for a great lightweight rig that has superb filtering
and makes traveling with a rig so easy. I hope I worked a few of you while
operating as ZF2UL. See you again next February/March.

73, Bob K3UL

[Elecraft] K3 TX Light

2009-10-28 Thread Frank MacDonell
I just loaded up the latest version of the K3 Utility (3.44). Using a
K3 with HRD the monitor (within HRD) shows a CW signal being
transmitted but the red light does not come on during TX. Is something
wrong or is this normal protocol? Thank you in advance.

2009-10-28 Thread dalej
I'd like to be able to turn on the monitor without having to adjust
the monitor level up then down when I'm finished. When I forget and
leave the monitor level at say 27 and push hold the monitor control I
get feedback from the speaker when I transmit in SSB mode, requiring
me to go back and set level to zero.

Re: [Elecraft] [K3] New K3 feature -- need testers: Main/Sub Audio, Mixing Control (MIX menu entry)

2009-10-28 Thread DM4iM
Elecrafters,

I subscribed as a tester for the Macro Switch Customization, only to
find , after recovering from the CQ-WW, that other testers were very
busy creating and testing macros. Even the Manual has been updated
already. Wow!
So the macros i created are already there , slightly different, but
there's no need to invent the wheel again.

I now was thinking of testing the Main/Sub Audio etc, but
i feel that the other testers will outrun me again. :-)

Go Elecrafters!

P.S. I asked Ben, DL7UCX, author of UCX-LOG (Freeware), to implement
buttons in his software to send custom-macros to the transceiver. Let's
see...

Re: [Elecraft] KX-1: Broadcast breakthrough on 20m

2009-10-28 Thread Peter, DL2FI
Good morning all,
I assume there is nothing defect nor misalignment in the KX1 but a special
situation as we find it in some European Areas during winter conditions. At
different places in Europe we have different levels of Broadcast signals. It
depends on the distance between your actual location and the BC stn
location. Especially BC stn located somewhere in Russia can produce extreme
high field strength in the evening because if it is the right distance and
if it is darkness between them and you. For example I measured more the
350mV sum RF at 50 Ohm using a 2x 20m dipole here in Berlin.

The KX1 is an excellent little transceiver but for such situations it´s
preselect ion sometimes is not good enough to handle such strong off band
signals without producing some intermodulations. Remember, even for the much
bigger K2 we published a "European 40m Band Modification" because in seldom
cases even the fantastic K2 suffered by Intermodulations.

The KX1 is as it is, it would be a hard job to give it some extra front end
selectivity, but an easy way to avoid this intermodulations is to use a
selective ATU. Normal T or L ATU designs do add only poor extra selectivity,
but if you use a parallel design like the ZM2 or ZM4
(http://www.qrpproject.biz/UK/ZM4.html) or the "Fuchs ATU"
(http://www.qrpproject.biz/UK/multifuchs.htm) you will have the same amount
of selectivity as with a complete preselector.

I suspect the sort of things being referencedplgu here are:

- many pieces of modern electronics fail through old age in less hours
than their MTBF (e.g. computer disk drives), which means they are only
useful if you have many instances of the product and replace them before
they reach old age;

- MTBF doesn't account for things like lightning strikes and shorted
antenna cables;

- for a semi-kit, many failure modes will depend on the quality of the
assembly process and anti-static measures;

- failure rates are very temperature dependent and somewhat dependent on
other environmental factors, like humidity.
