Re: [Elecraft] new firmware release

Hmmm, not sure why you need to switch off twice, once IS required as noted
in the K3 Manual and that has been the case with mine from day one.

Never had a FW download failure...yep, I got'em crossed now folks...:-)

Re: [Elecraft] [K3] Yamaha CM500 and ANTIVOX setting

2010-12-11 Thread Igor Kosvin
I also recently replaced the Heil Proset for CM500, not because of hearing
issues but better comfort in the long contests. I am not a big fan of vox, I
use a foot pedal to PTT the rig. I turned on the vox just to see if I have
same problem as you with CM500. I currently use front panel microphone
connector with homebrew adaptor and I also currently don't use the K3 bias
for the microphone, I still use the AAA battery pack that came with the
headset for the bias. I played with the vox settings so the levels will be
right and sensitivity of vox is correct. It is not difficult to do because
the CM500 microphone is highly directional. Here are my settings at this
point:
MIC is 30
CMP is 20
In the Main menu:
VOX GN is 010
ANTIVOX is 025

With these settings the vox works as it should. Knocking on the desk,
dropping pen on the desk or normal breathing do not trip the vox. I don't
know how loud are the signals you are hearing, my AF gain is at about 9
o'clock position to hear normal signals on 10m. The headset is closing the
ears pretty tight, hard to believe that audio from the headphones is able to
trip the vox.

Subject: [Elecraft] Yamaha CM500 and ANTIVOX setting

I decided to try the CM500 headset in place of the Elecraft Heil Proset
headset. I'm always on a quest for increased volume due to age related
decreased hearing. To that end I can emphatically say that the CM500 solves
my low audio level problem. The CM500 in the rear headphone jack provides
greater audio output then the Proset in the rear speaker jack. So far, so
good.

I tried the CM500 on SSB today in the 10 meter contest and had occasional
VOX tripping when listening to loud signals or loud noise. I'm using the
headphones and there is no speaker output. (I even held my breath to be sure
my breathing wasn't tripping the VOX). I reduced the VOX GAIN to 17. Any
lower and I couldn't always trip it reliably. My ANTIVOX was set at 20 for
the Proset so I began to crank it up. It's up to 80 now for the CM500 and
appears to have solved the problem.

My other settings are:
RP.L BIAS
MIC GAIN = 10 for 5 to 7 ALC bars
Comp = 20 for 10db CMP

Has anyone else experienced this problem?

Mike K2MK

Re: [Elecraft] K3 PA IO TST Problem

2010-12-11 Thread David Christ
That was it. I had tried it a second time per installation
instructions. Tried a third time and there it went. Now I can
continue the installation. There is another small mystery which can
be solved later. When I go to fan 1 the fans jerk once but don't
spin. Going to 2 3 and 4 they spin fine. If I go to e and then to 1
they continue to spin. Also if I start at 1 and flick the blades
with my finger they run fine. Ill have to get out my VOM and check
the supply voltage.

Makes me think of that cell phone ad. With Elecraft you are getting
thousands of support people.

Re: [Elecraft] XG2 Frequency Accuracy

2010-12-11 Thread David Gilbert

Yeah, I understand that. I was just wondering how close they might be
since I don't have a clue what the tolerance is of the crystals used by
Elecraft. Specifically, I was wondering if they would be close enough
(typically) to use for in-band IMD tests as a function of AGC settings.
Or at least close enough that whichever one was higher in frequency
could be easily padded down to within a few tens of Hz or so of the other.

[Elecraft] [Net] Elecraft CW Net Announcement

2010-12-11 Thread Kevin Rock

Good Evening,
It is raining. It has been raining. It will be raining. I feel like
I am conjugating a verb :) The weather has gone from cold to medium.
Soon it will be 50 degrees or better; but with rain. Looks like my spate
of winter has passed. But the calendar has yet to say winter so I await
more snow.
Propagation on twenty meters has been rather good while forty meters
has been less than satisfactory. I am unsure why forty meters has been so
abysmal but maybe it is due for a change.

Please join us tomorrow afternoon and evening.

[Elecraft] An AGC Story

2010-12-11 Thread Bob Henderson
Bottom posted for context.

Geoff GM4ESD wrote

"If I had a K3, before I changed the HAGC threshold my *first*
measurement would be to look at the output of the SA612 mixer (with a
spectrum analyser) while introducing two or more very close spaced
signals into the antenna port, so that these signals do get through
the roofer - as in a pileup. The objective, of course, would be to
obtain an acceptably clean output from the mixer with non intrusive
products over a wide range of input levels. IMHO the higher the
HAGC's threshold can be the better, provided its control is tight
enough when activated to protect all what follows."

I made within DSP b/w IMD measurements on my K3 and comparable
measurements on my K2. These were included in a post dated 5 December
but you may have missed it.

The following measurements relate to K3 S/N 4904 on 7MHz with 2.7kHz
roofing filter and 2.7kHz DSP b/w. Default slow AGC was selected.
The table shows input level at the K3 antenna connector for
each of two carriers spaced 500Hz. At each input level, the level of
the strongest IMD product observed at the AF output using an HP8568B is recorded
alongside.

-73dBm Better than -55dBc (Input S9)
-63dBm -55dBc
-53dBm -50dBc
-42dBm -45dBc
-33dBm -42dBc
-23dBm -37dBc (Input S9+50)

These figures are good and IMHO entirely acceptable. Some older
transceivers would struggle to provide -35dBc at S9.

I made a similar set of measurements with my old K2 S/N 997

-73dBm -50dBc
-63dBm -48dBc
-53dBm -45dBc
-43dBm -48dBc
-33dBm -45dBc
-23dBm -15dBc

Broadly speaking the K3 is as good or better than the K2, which is
itself good. It is possible later mods to the K2 may have made it even
better. The most recent mods to my K2 were carried out over 5 years ago.

I would be interested in knowing if the KPA-500 will work QRQ / QSK (to at
least 70 wpm) with the K3 in CW+ mode, where the KEY OUT to RF out timing is
fixed at approximately 4 to 5 msecs? Also, does the KPA-500 QSK use all
solid state switching (no relays)? Anyone have any information on these
details?

Re: [Elecraft] XG2 Frequency Accuracy

2010-12-11 Thread Don Wilhelm
  Dave,

The frequency accuracy of the XG2 will vary with the individual
crystals. It is not specifically for frequency accuracy, but for level
accuracy.

In other words, I would not depend on the XG2 for any sort of frequency
calibration unless you measured the output of a particular one with a
calibrated frequency meter.

[Elecraft] [K2] Microphonic 18.157.9 (+/-) ?

2010-12-11 Thread Eugene Balinski
Hi All,

I ran across an interesting thing with my K2. I have a
very pronounced microphonic at 18.157.9. There is a
carrier (birdie?) on that frequency and when I tap on the
top of the radio, the tapping is clearly audible in the
speaker.

Has anyone else noticed this ?

Thanks in advance,

The mic in the CM500 is a VERY hot mic -- that is, a lot of level. You
may need to reduce both mic gain and level.

This is during upgrading a K3/10 to a K3/100.
The PAIO test is done before the PA3 is
installed. And yes I made sure the red wire was
on the pin with the silk screened word red behind
it.

I haven't taken time to study the schematics yet or take voltage readings.

[Elecraft] Yamaha CM500 and ANTIVOX setting

2010-12-11 Thread Mike K2MK

Comp = 20 for 10db CMP

Has anyone else experienced this problem?

Mike K2MK

Re: [Elecraft] K3 PA IO TST Problem

2010-12-11 Thread Johnny Siu
Hello David,

Could you take out the KPA3 module and just leave the PAIO board? Do the test
again so that we can determine whether the problem is solely coming from the
PAIO board.

The PAIO board can work without the power module and the K3 can function in QRP
mode?

BTW, do you install the fans connector in the correct way (beware of the
position of the red wires)?

cheers,

主題: [Elecraft] Raves about the K3

This is my first post to this reflector and would like to share some of my
observations.

First. I have a 4xxx series K3, built by Elecraft that is fully outfitted and
filtered running LP-Pan, an EMU-0202 and a MicroHam Station Master.

Second, I have been operating an IC-7700 for the past 2 yrs.

That being said I have run both rigs side-by-side into a IC-PW1 and Palstar
AT-Auto.

I must say that each radio has its own benefits and is outstanding to operate,
but here is where the K3 shines:

1. True dual VFO/dual receive;
2. Easy MARS modification (yes, I am a licensed AF MARS Operator);
3. IF out. LP-Pan and PowerSDR are outstanding;
4. ESSB - of course with the proper filtering being installed;
5. Tx Eq and Noise Gate - No out-board W2IHY EQ is needed (sorry Julius);
6. Light weight;
7. Unbelievable receive audio with the appropriate filtering;
8. Menu flexibility;and
9. Easy updating of firmware.

Candidly, I still love and use the IC-7700, but more and more I am utilizing
the
K3.  The K3 is an outstanding value and robust transceiver.

As a separate matter (a bit of a rant here), and for example having seen the
ARRL and Sherwood engineering reports regarding the FTDX-5000.  We as hams are
always in search of "nirvana".  While I have heard the issues regarding the
FTDX-5000 design that have not made the mainstream press, the issue here is not
to bash Yaesu, but to congratulate and thank Wayne and Eric for the OUTSTANDING
job, not only with the design and operation of the K3, but their support of the
user group to identify issues and improvements  and their outstanding customer
support when you call them for assistance. Kudos to Elecraft.

Best, 73, Ed, N2EAC

[Elecraft] Audio mixer request: A - A and B - B

2010-12-11 Thread Frank R. Oppedijk
Hello,

I have noticed that the CONFIG:L-MIX-R configuration setting
currently has six options:

A - B
A - AB
AB - B
AB - AB
A - B
A - AB

The keen reader will notice that option 5 equals option 1, and
option 6 equals option 2. This is probably a (cosmetic) bug.

love to have the following settings for options 5 and 6:

This would enable me to implement an elegant AutoHotHey mono/stereo
toggle for my SO2V K3 (people doing SO2R with N1MM may know the
mono/stereo toggle as that what happens when you push the back-quote (`) key).

(Currently, I must use an ugly workaround in my AutoHotKey script in
order to achieve the mono/stereo toggle: in mono mode, I set
CONFIG:L-MIX-R= AB - AB and then set the RF gain of the receiver that
must be muted to 0 and the other RF gain to max. While this does
work, using the script I cannot use the RF gain front panel controls
in their intended manner, thus reducing the number of options that I
have to combat strong signals at the upper range of the K3's dynamic range...)

Re: [Elecraft] An AGC story

2010-12-11 Thread Geoffrey Mackenzie-Kennedy
Hi John,

The NPR test is, I agree, certainly a very useful method to expose IMD
problems, but I think that when used as a *diagnostic* tool the requirements
placed on the notch filter's bandwidth limits this method's versatility -
unless one is prepared to build a set of band reject filters (probably
crystal) that may be required, whose IMD contribution is much less that that
of the receiver, device or sub-system being tested.

To obtain low phase noise from my IMD test arrangement I have been using low
noise crystal oscillators followed by +40dbm output amplifiers, which is I
admit a cumbersome approach, but it did provide useful results until I
damaged the equipment while measuring the IMD generated by some types of RF
transformer - a sad story!

If Santa gave me a K3 I could stop speculating about its multi signal
performance :-)

Not here Geoff, but I can't really tell. I assume there will be distortion
any time one goes "whacking great holes" in the spectrum of a signal to

IIRC the exact nature of the process based on the settings for the NB in the

Re: [Elecraft] An AGC story

2010-12-11 Thread juergen
Hi Geoff

The noise power ratio test(NPR) might show more clearly any mixer IMD problems.
The NPR test might also better characterize any roofing filter IMD as well.

The noise power ratio test better characterizes dynamic receiver performance.
The NPR test also does not require expensive low phase noise signal generators.

Re: [Elecraft] W2 Bug

2010-12-11 Thread K5WA
Jacques,

Is it possible that you have accidentally put the W2 into the auto-sensor
mode that monitors BOTH S1 and S2? That is one reason the S1/S2 lights
blink alternately. I use my W2 in an SO2R station and I prefer it this way
but if you are using a single sensor, it will not give you the result you
want. Also, I had a lightning strike at my station and saw VERY sporadic
readings from the W2 before I replaced the sensors. Once I replaced the
sensors and the W2, everything worked as expected. Is it possible you had a
lightning surge?

Good luck figuring it out. Mine is working very well and I am happy with
it.

A+

My W2 wattmeter refuses to display power and swr values...only the S1 and S2

lit up !
Nothing can change this abnormal set up.
So far, it had been working normally, as well as the PC extension.
Has anyone any idea ?

Re: [Elecraft] K144XV Manual (corrected)

2010-12-11 Thread Ron D'Eau Claire
TRN0 identifies the transverter as being the internal unit that switches
crystals. From the K144XV manual:

"2) Setting ADR to Int. Trn0 tells the K3 the internal 2 meter module is
being used rather than an external
transceiver. This sets up the KXV3A correctly and enables automatic K144XV
crystal switching at the146
MHz boundary. Any value from Int. Trn0 through Int. Trn9 may be used, but
Int. Trn0 is the default for 144
MHz operation. Int. Trn1 through Int. Trn9 provide unique band data signals
at the KRX3 output that may
be used to control external higher-frequency transverters connected to the
K144XV. See Band Data in the
K3 Owner's manual for details about the data signals."

At one time, TRN1 was used for this, but it the firmware was changed last
September and the manual was updated accordingly.

-Original Message-

  John,

It seems that any of the "Int Trn x" can be used - the difference is in
the band decoder output. See page 19 of the K3 manual.

[Elecraft] K3: Voice Fast Monitor

2010-12-11 Thread Tom Boucher
As the person, or one of them, who asked for the Voice Tx Fast Monitor facility
which has been included in V.4.22, can I say 'thanks' to Wayne & Lyle for this
new feature? It allows sidetone monitoring of transmitted audio without the
somewhat disconcerting delay, albeit without hearing any compression. If you
want to hear the level of compression, a touch of one of the mic controls while
you are transmitting changes the sidetone over to monitoring the true
transmitted audio.

Also the APF is going to be great for pulling out those weak topband signals.
All I need now is a fix so the K3 will operate at temperatures below 15C, then
I can get rid of the 100 watt tubular heater which burns continually underneath
it!

Your VFOs may be linked. Try holding the SUB button (to the right of the
VFO A knob and down) until the VFO B display area shows "unlined".

[Elecraft] XG1

2010-12-11 Thread Mike Harris
G'day,

A cautionary tale.

I decided to check the total receive signal loss through my system
from the coax termination in the wall to the K3, via the amp and
antenna switching having had a hot switching event.

I first plugged the XG1 directly into the K3 and with the agc off
set the dBV reading to 0.0 with 50uV. Next moved the XG1 right to
the end of the last internal coax cable. -1.7dBV!

Whilst moving the XG1 I noticed that the reading returned to the set
point 0.0 dBV when I picked it up.

I turned out that placing the XG1 on its rubber feet on a metallic
surface (the case of the linear) resulted in this signal loss.
Holding the XG1 in the air by the cable that connected it to the K3
removed this loss. I didn't check the effect of placing it on the
wooden desk surface.

When connected to the K3 I simply use a BNC to PL259 adapter and it
sticks out the back self supported.

Just an observation.

Regards,

Mike VP8NO

Re: [Elecraft] An AGC story

2010-12-11 Thread Geoffrey Mackenzie-Kennedy
Chen,

It is not really my place to comment on this subject not having a K3 to
measure, but I would like to offer the following thoughts related to the
"naughty things" you mention.

Whereas measuring the receiver's audio output level vs.the level of a single
signal injected into the antenna input port will obviously provide some good
information about the AGC's control characteristics, unfortunately this
measurement does not provide any hard data as to whether or not
intermodulation generated in the IF stages will become or is an issue when
two or more strong signals get through the roofer in use.

Given that the 1db compression point of a typical SA612 mixer is reached
when the *composite* power of all signals reaching its input is
approximately minus 25dbm, and given that positive gain exists between the
antenna port and the SA612's input when both the Preamp and Attenuator are
OFF, in the region of 6db I believe when a 400 Hz roofer is in place, then
in the *absence* of any HAGC action the SA612 would enter compression when
the *composite* power of all signals at the antenna port that eventually get
through the roofer is only minus 31dbm. At this level *without* HAGC applied
there would be, of course, a large number of of strong odd order intermod
products appearing at the SA612's output should multiple signals get through
the roofer.

Now bring in the HAGC.

Because part of the method used to control IF gain by the HAGC involves
current starvation of the J309 IF amplifier, it is *possible* that with HAGC
applied the Output Intercept (OIP3) of this amplifier might decrease,
thereby increasing the level of IMD products generated by this amplifier.

So, even though the HAGC might prevent the SA612 from approaching
compression, much of the HAGC's protective work in terms of reducing
unwanted IMD products *might* be undone by the J309 when it is starved of
current. Please understand that this is pure speculation on my part.

If I had a K3, before I changed the HAGC threshold my *first* measurement
would be to look at the output of the SA612 mixer (with a spectrum analyser)
while introducing two or more very close spaced signals into the antenna
port, so that these signals do get through the roofer - as in a pileup. The
objective, of course, would be to obtain an acceptably clean output from the
mixer with non intrusive products over a wide range of antenna input levels.
IMHO the higher the HAGC's threshold can be the better, provided that its
control is tight enough when activated to protect all what follows.

73,

Re: [Elecraft] K144XV Manual (corrected)

2010-12-11 Thread Don Wilhelm
  John,

It seems that any of the "Int Trn x" can be used - the difference is in
the band decoder output. See page 19 of the K3 manual.

Re: [Elecraft] unusual problem

2010-12-11 Thread Lou Kolb
Sam,

Not sure which accessory is the KXV3a. I do have the internal tuner and a
G5RV and a tribander hooked to the A and B antenna jacks. I have no amp
and use the G5RV most of the time. I should also mention that everytime
this has happened, it's been right after turning the rig on after it has
been sitting overnight in a chilly shack. It'll arc for a few seconds, only
while transmitting, and then settle down. So far, I haven't noticed any
other anomales in the operation of the rig. Lou WA3MIX

[Elecraft] unusual problem

2010-12-11 Thread Lou Kolb
Recently, I started noticing a strange sound from my K3-4290. When keying
the rig on CW I'll hear a crackling or almost a gurgling sound coming from
the radio itself. It's only happened 2 or at most 3 times but this morning
I smelled something for the first time. It started happening right after I
upgraded the firmware although I doubt there's a connection. I'm guessing a
coil could be arcing, although as a person who is blind, I'm afraid I can't
offer any visual data. Any thoughts? Lou WA3MIX

I presume that the statement in the K144XV manual on P. 19, Step 2
should read*Int Trn 0* not*Int Trn 1*?

[Elecraft] UK Elecraft Net

2010-12-11 Thread Ian Maude
Hi all,
I will be running the Elecraft net as usual on 3658 +/- QRM at 09:00z
tomorrow (12/12/10). I have had various questions regarding frequency and
time changes. We have tried 40m in an attempt to see if we could cover more
of Europe but unfortunately at that time, it is almost impossible to hear
inter-G activity. As for time, 09:00 is the time I have available to run
the net. Signals are also quite good at that time now. If anyone wants to
run a 40m net at another time, feel free :)

That said, if you have a K2 or K3 and you have some time tomorrow morning
between 09:00 and 10:00z, I would be very happy to hear you!
