Re: [Elecraft] SS Amp

2019-01-16 Thread Peter Hall
Folks,

This is an interesting discussion because it's clearly a comparison that
potential buyers will do - as I did. In the end, I opted for the Elecraft
KPA1500 because I wanted the cleanest solid state base station amplifier I
could reasonably buy. I wasn't impressed with the SPE IMD results (at least at
the time I was looking) but, that said, I was (and am) at a loss to actually
find any published KPA1500 distortion specs. In fact, I find it a curious
omission in the Elecraft brochure or manual. If I'm missing a reference
somewhere, I'd appreciate a pointer to the specs.

As Darrell mentioned, the more flexible switching of the SPE amplifiers is a
definite plus and quite seductive.

Since obtaining my KPA1500 I've been pleased with it and have done my own IMD
measurements using the best exciter I can round up, namely my 50-year old
Collins 32S-3. I'm generally pleased with my choice of amplifier but look
forward to using it with a predistortion system (e.g. PureSignal) once that
spreads beyond the ANAN camp. With any luck, I might even end up with a system
that improves on the 50-year old 32S-3/30L-1 combination 😊

Greetings all,
Depends on your use, if you plan to travel and operate on an island etc, then
hands down the SPE 1.5K or 1.3k.
Looks like most on the list are more concerned for a home amp, and kpa1500 is
obviously a great choice too. I just received my SPE 1.5K a couple weeks ago,
and prior to that had the 1.3 for 3 yrs. For travel the spe means several less
boxes to take...virtually self-contained with the 4 autoselect antenna ports,
legal limit ATU, and 2 rig inputs, and autoselect power supply ( will detect
120v or 240v like a laptop does).
I have an Acom 2000a also in service at home.
All of these amps work great with my k3, like someone else mentioned dont
forget to go to each band and lower power if you have low drive 1.3spe (the
1.5k takes regular drive (25 to 30w on mine).

Re: [Elecraft] SS Amp

2019-01-16 Thread Barry Simpson
Hi Dave

I had an SPE 1.5KFA for a few months.

I have also owned a KPA500 for around 4 or 5 years.

Despite the publicity blurb that says the SPE QSK is silent, it isn't. The
relay is quite noisy - at least if you are used to the totally silent
KPA500.

It is also difficult to control power wise. I wanted to run it at around
400 watts and for that you only need about 8 or 9 watts of drive so it is
difficult to control accurately.

I also found an unexpected quirk whereby using the amplifier affected my
transformer (not switch mode) in my Alinco 30A 12V power supply. In
sympathy with the keying, the transformer in the PSU kept making a groaning
noise that I have never had before. I have surmised that as the SPE has
power factor correction circuitry, that is somehow interacting with the
transformer. I didn't get the same effect with various switch mode power
supplies.

At the end of the day, I decided that the SPE was not for me and I sold it.
I much prefer the KPA500.

If you don't want the KPA1500 there is a very nice looking solid state amp
made in the UK by Linear Amp, the Gemini HF 1K. It has some really good
reviews on eHam and it appears to have silent QSK.

The SPE 1.5 uses a single LDMOS device. While it can produce 1500W
with sufficient drive, it starts to compress well before the 1000 W
level. SPE's own test data supplied to the FCC showed very poor IMD
characteristics - what one would call a distortion generator - at
"full" power.

I have the 1.5K-FA. I like it. I am not heavily into contesting and I'm not
a competitive DXer.

Yes, it's less expensive than the KPA1500. It also doesn't integrate as
well with the K3. It doesn't control the K3's output power when switching
between standby and operate. One needs to remember to do that, especially
when switching into operate mode on the amp - massive overdrive isn't
pretty and could damage the amplifier.

It doesn't remote as well as the KPA1500, either. It comes with a software
control panel that runs on Windows. I use VNC to control the amp when
operating remote.

James,

As  a long time KPA500 and KAT500 user, I've never seen the need for any
such connection between the rig and the amp. All it takes is a dit or a
tap on the mic, and the both are ready to go. The only connections that
ARE required is the pull to ground to put the amp in TX mode that loops
through the RCA connectors on the KAT500. That is, Key Out from the rig
to one RCA on the tuner, and RCA-RCA jumper from the other RCA to the amp.

Re: [Elecraft] KX2 Filter Bandwidth issue - Resolved

2019-01-16 Thread Bob McGraw K4TAX
I have experienced issues where a computer and the application software
left fragments of data in the radio.  Not specific to the KX2 but could
be.   From your description it seems the radio was in FSK mode.  That
performs as you described which is a function of APF.

I have found in most cases it is best to close the software application
before turning off the radio.  Then turn off the radio and then shut
down the power supply, then shut down the computer. Power up in the
reverse sequence; computer completely booted, power supply on, turn on
the radio, then load / open the application software.

One other issue which has been shown to leave corrupt data in the radio
is when the power supply is shut down before the radio is turned off.
The radio has no chance to save any recent data or configuration.
Always turn off the radio first and then the power supply.

Perhaps someone will come up with  petite or very tiny jumper cables.
That might solve the Low Battery issue.   Maybe a "jumper cable kit".

Re: [Elecraft] Battery Low K3

2019-01-16 Thread Bert via Elecraft

Just a suggestion for a battery source: Harbor Freight. I've been using
CR2032's on my dog's illuminated collar (uses two batteries at a time), and
they've been outlasting the "name brands" that I'd buy at Home Depot. If you're
shy about using batteries made out of the country, just check the origins of
the ones you buy a a local store! The wrapping's from one place (it says
"distributed by") and the battery from somewhere else.Plus, for a pack of four,
I paid less than I would for a pack of two of the "name brand"! After replacing
one in the K3, I now have three more to use on the dog collar! Can't beat that
with a stick...even better, don't forget to use a coupon if you have one...73,

[Elecraft] KX2 Bandwidth Issue

2019-01-16 Thread K9MA
The KX2 (and maybe KX3) has long had an issue that when the filter
bandwidth is set to x00 Hz, some artifacts appear. Over a year ago, a
"temporary" fix was introduced, automatically adding 50 Hz to the x00,
so it can only be set to 350, 450, etc. I know it's a minor thing, but
I'm rather attached to using 400 Hz. Has anyone heard anything about a fix?

Re: [Elecraft] K3s Line Out (stereo)

2019-01-16 Thread KENT TRIMBLE

Hi Dick . . .

Good to see you on the reflector again.

One "earthly reason" for having four people wear headphones during FD is
when you are wanting to train new operators.  By monitoring both sides
of the contact they can better grasp what's going on and practice
copying the exchanges (especially so for CW students).

We have used both the Behringer AMP800
(http://www.musictribe.com/Categories/Behringer/Signal-Processors/Headphone-Amplifiers/AMP800/p/P0331)
and the Rolls HA-43 (http://www.rolls.com/product.php?pid=HA43), and
both amps work fine at 100 watts with no RFI.

They have also been useful for summertime QRP sprints (e.g., Bumble Bee
and Skeeter Hunt) where signals, weak to begin with, are further drowned
out by outdoor noises.  Some QRP rigs don't have speakers and those that
do are often not usable outdoors.

Eric,

If you'll pardon a little self-promotion, you might consider using FANticipator
to control the fans in your KAP1500. It's free, runs local or remote, and will
perform those speed-changing tasks automatically for you... including shutting
the fans off completely when the amp returns to ambient temperatures.

[Elecraft] KX2 Filter Bandwidth issue

2019-01-16 Thread Corky
I have been using my KX2 for digital (Fldigi and SignaLink) and am seeing a
very strange behavior when I attempt to adjust the signal bandwidth. As long as
the bandwidth is above 2.0 everything works fine. When I reduce it to cut out
nearby signals the signal on the fldigi waterfall has s gap in the middle and
two bands, one above and the other below where I am listening. This cleverly
filters out the exact signal I am trying to monitor and leaves the signals
above and below my 1500 Hz operating point still coming through. I have not
found any way to fix this, and the same settings on either the KX3 or the K2
produce the expected results of a single narrowed band around my monitoring
point.

Anyone else experienced this or have any suggestions as to how to get the
desired/expected results when adjusting the receive bandwidth?

Re: [Elecraft] K3s Line Out (stereo)

2019-01-16 Thread K9MA
There's no mystery at all. The headphone outputs of two radios go to a
switching system with a common ground. There inevitably is a small AC
voltage difference between the chassis of the two radios, and from the
radios to the rest of the system ground, which results in some current
flowing in the headphone cable ground wires. Bonding everything together
with braid might have helped, but it might have been hard to get the
impedance low enough. The common ground was an oversight on my part, but
avoiding it would have required third relay pole and isolated headphone
jacks. Rather than rebuild the switching system, I inserted the
transformers. They serve exactly the same purpose as the K3 internal
ones in the line outputs.

I'm not sure how other SO2R systems deal with the problem, but it has to
be either isolation transformers of switched headphone grounds. Or, as
does one of my friends, completely isolated left and right headphones.

What happens if you cable to LINE OUT signals to a computer soundcard
(with both left and right channels - some only are one channel if the
input is set for MIC)?  You should hear the main RX in the left
channel and the SubRX in the right.

Your external transformers/cabling raises the question of "is it the
K3S or is it your external devices that are causing the problem".

Time to strip everything down to the essentials and begin to determine
where the "failure" is occurring.  Test one thing at a time.

Re: [Elecraft] K3s Line Out (stereo)

2019-01-16 Thread Bob McGraw K4TAX
I agree but in the case of using two radios, two pair of headphones, a
switching system and getting hum indicates a serious deficiency in the
station interconnection and ground scheme. Everything should be at the
same potential, thus no current would flow.   As they say "sum-tin not
right".

Haven’t noticed any. It is a simple device, a quad op-amp and four pots in a

John,

If the voltage displayed on the KPA500 is within range, nothing has to
be done.

See page 9 of the KPA500 manual for instructions on checking the voltage.
If the voltage is not in range, change the transformer tap. See page 8

Re: [Elecraft] K3s Line Out (stereo)

2019-01-16 Thread K9MA
The headphone outputs from my radios are switched with some relays. The
switching system has a common ground, which creates a ground loop,
resulting in 60 Hz hum in the headphones. (Call it common impedance
coupling, if you prefer.) I should have isolated the headphone grounds,
but a path of less resistance was to insert the isolation transformers.
They are just common 600 Ohm transformers, like the ones in the K3 line
outputs, but they're a bit lossy driving headphones.

[Elecraft] KX3 Dual Watch

2019-01-16 Thread Hans J Rasmusen via Elecraft
Good morning,

The KX3 has a nice Dual Watch feature. It is however, of limited use when the
DX is weak and the callers are strong (a common case here).
To overcome this problem I have build a simple two channels audio amplifier
with 2 LM380N (Manhattan style) with independent volumn controls.
I can Independently boost the VFO A signal in one channel and reduce the VFO B
in the other Channel.
But some VFO A signal seems to leak into the VFO B channel and visa versa.
I can not observe any signal leakage when using an audio generator as test
input.

Has anyone observed something similar?
Does the KX3 Dual Watch feature only offer a limited channel separation or have
I wired my amplifier wrongly?

Thank you in advance.

Re: [Elecraft] K3s Line Out (stereo)

2019-01-16 Thread K9MA
My station has a relay system for switching the headphones between two
different radios, among other things. I had to add isolation
transformers for the same reason the K3 has them on the line outputs.
The loss in the transformers reduces the audio level too much for the
rear panel headphone jack to drive two sets of the low sensitivity
headphones I use. And I don't want a cable in the way to the front panel.

That's why it's "complicated".

1) If you are feeding the antenna at the precise end of the wire, move
the feedpoint out a few feet. That's because you need "the other half of
the antenna." Because of the high impedance at this point, only a few
feet are needed.

2) Don't connect one side of the ladder line to a ground rod. It doesn't
help and will probably hurt. If you want to ground something, ground the
shield of the coax at the tuner.

3) Use a good 1:1 balun designed for antenna tuner use between the tuner
and the ladder line. Yes, people say you should use a 4:1 balun. Don't
listen to them. The impedance at the end of the ladder line will be low
on 40m (it's transformed by the near 1/4 wave ladder line). If you use
the antenna on other bands it will vary all over the map.

I haven't read all the comments on this thread and thus may requesting
redundant info. My antenna, for 40 mtr's, is a 67' wire up about 25'. I
have 30' of 450 ohm ladder line connected to the end of the antenna and
bringing the antenna into my basement. So I guess you could say that I have
a non-resonant end fed Zepp.

I can check the impedance at the end of the ladder line, where one side is
the antenna and the other side is connected to a ground rod at the point of
entering the house. I can measure the impedance of the antenna in the
basement, using Mini60 without an antenna tuner . The ladder line is then
connected to a MFJ 926B remote antenna tuner The tuner is fed by about 30'
of RG58 coax from my transmitter. When I see a reactive component to the
impedance of the ladder line, without the tuner connected, should I have
some choke inserted in one side of the ladder line or not? Should the tuner
be able to handle the reactive component?
