[Elecraft] OT Powerline Wifi extenders

2019-10-20 Thread a45wg
Fellow Elecrafters,
I am trying to extend the wifi
based internet coverage in my property. Alas it has very thick concrete walls
with lots of re-bar in them, which is good for the odd earthquake - but not so
much for wifi.

I am trying to avoid at all costs of drilling holes in the walls and
using ethernet/Fibre/coax etc... With the effect that I havebeen looking at
wifi range extending.

I am familiar (and not that impressed with Wifi extenders) but I have
been looking at Powerline Extenders - which looks like a clever solution - but
one which sound like it should have a QRM-Health warning to all Hams written
all over it.

So does anyone use Powerline Wifi extenders ?
If so - any issues ...
Any models you would recommend (or suggest to avoid)

If you would like to read more on this technology the following link should get
you started ...

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HomePlug

With this example from TP as to how they can be used

https://www.tp-link.com/us/home-networking/powerline/tl-pa9020-kit/

Many thanks

Tim

Re: [Elecraft] K-Line Climate Control

2018-07-04 Thread a45wg
Gary,
I am also considering moving the K-Line (K3S KPA500) to a “shed” (yet
to be bought) at the base of my antenna.

But my location is in the Philippines where it is hot, humid and it
rains an awful lot (Think Florida without the Oranges)

Are there off-the-shelf containers for such things, or do people run
A/C or De-Humidifiers etc ??

Re: [Elecraft] [KX3] QSO of the week (and a re-learned QRP SSB tip

2018-07-02 Thread a45wg
This is something that the Oman Radio Society asks all members to do for a
month starting on "National Day" (Read 4th July)

What a pain in the a**e !!! for example "a45wg/ND48" (National-Day 48th
Year). It is totally meaningless for 99% of all hams.

I like the /qrp if they truly are qrp

I now get down from my soap-box

Re: [Elecraft] KX3 Utility Linux version

2018-06-12 Thread a45wg
KX3 Utils

I am running a totally basic Ubuntu Environment (64 bit).

I will get the KX3 Utils, extract and check the file type

mkdir /elecraft
chdir /elecraft
wget http://www.elecraft.com/software/KX3/KX3UtilityLINUX_1_16_6_25.tgz
tar -zxvf KX3UtilityLINUX_1_16_6_25.tgz
cd kx3util_1_16_6_25

Now to see what this file is

file file kx3util

I get the following output….

kx3util: ELF 32-bit LSB executable, Intel 80386, version 1 (SYSV), dynamically
linked, interpreter /lib/ld-linux.so.2, for GNU/Linux 2.6.0, stripped

Ok - it is a 32bit Image… So it will not run.

Here’s how to fix it, by adding the i386 Package ability, and then adding some
needed libs

dpkg --add-architecture i386
apt-get update
apt-get install libc6:i386 libncurses5:i386 libstdc++6:i386

Now if I check the file kx3util I can see it has resolved the i386 links
(because I added the the i386 libs)

ldd kx3util
linux-gate.so.1 =>  (0xf77d)
libdl.so.2 => /lib/i386-linux-gnu/libdl.so.2 (0xf77c4000)
libpthread.so.0 => /lib/i386-linux-gnu/libpthread.so.0 (0xf77a7000)
libstdc++.so.6 => /usr/lib/i386-linux-gnu/libstdc++.so.6 (0xf763)
libm.so.6 => /lib/i386-linux-gnu/libm.so.6 (0xf75db000)
libgcc_s.so.1 => /lib/i386-linux-gnu/libgcc_s.so.1 (0xf75be000)
libc.so.6 => /lib/i386-linux-gnu/libc.so.6 (0xf7407000)
/lib/ld-linux.so.2 (0xf77d1000)

Hope that is a slightly clearer instruction.

Should you want to automate this using Docker, this is the docker script for
this.

FROM ubuntu:16.04

#by adding i386 lib references
#It will pull the elecraft kx3 utility into /elecraft

#
#Suggested Run:
#docker run -it test/kx3:1.0
run apt-get update && \
apt-get install wget -y

run dpkg --add-architecture i386 && \
apt-get update && \
mkdir /elecraft && \
chdir /elecraft && \
wget http://www.elecraft.com/software/KX3/KX3UtilityLINUX_1_16_6_25.tgz && \

Re: [Elecraft] KX3 Utility Linux version

2018-06-11 Thread a45wg
George,

First check the app is 32 bit

  * ldd - will probably fail
  * ./exec - probably says No File
  * File info exec show it is i386 file

Add Arch support

   sudo dpkg --add-architecture i386

Followed by

sudo apt-get update
   sudo apt-get install libc6:i386 libncurses5:i386 libstdc++6Li386

You may need the odd extrac package but you should be on your way (I hope with
this)

Re: [Elecraft] Make this email list more manageable - a forum instead?

2017-08-19 Thread a45wg
I personally like seeing the cool stuff people do with their Elecraft products.
I fear this will be lost using vBulletin or similar forum approaches.

I do not have a KX2 and I do not think I will I ever buy one (Got the KX3!!)-
but I like reading about people going to Walk the Camino Trail, the same goes
for the remote Ops, the same for the info regarding filters and Macro
programming.

Re: [Elecraft] RX antenna protection

2017-08-15 Thread a45wg
John,
Very sound advice.

I am using a Alpha Delta T33g50 that I picked up at HRO Denver, Co; The
Red Pittaya antenna (Cobwebb) is 15 feet below the TH-7 which is emitting aprox
500W.

It has survived for 12 months so far, which has amazed me.

[Elecraft] Fwd: Can KPA500 Operate Remotely?

2017-06-07 Thread a45wg
Jacl,
I have just knocked up a web based KPA Control program.

I need about another 5-7 days to document and to test, and then I can
post how too.

You would need

a) Remote Shack
b) KPA 500 in remote shack
c) Network connection with a public IP Address to remote shack
d) Small PC/Raspberry/Laptop etc
e) Python 3 Ecosystem

I already do this for my rotator, so using an iPad standing on the roof I can
control my antenna, which has saved countless trips up and down the stairs.
Same principle for the KPA.

I have the full Elecraft command set for the KPA 500 available as a web page.

If you are interested please drop me a PM… and I will link you to my web-page
which details how this can be accomplished.

Regards

Re: [Elecraft] (no subject)

2017-05-12 Thread a45wg
Mike,
Most SDR “hacking” unless those very hardcore people with good RF
building skills takes place on the I/Q (SDR Output) data.

I would point you in the path of GNU-Radio which offers IMHO the
easiest path to SDR processing for learning DSP processing and implementation.
Depending on the SDR Radio you can also generate your Signal here and send it
back out via your SDR Device.

There are plenty of Open-Source SDR Projects out there - some more
understandable than others

I would highly recommend the Red Pitaya project as a good neutral SDR
test bed, for this you can mess with EVERYTHING !!

On the same vane,

My 2005, Range Rover would lock and unlock (repeat….) when I transmitted on
20M - other bands it was fine.

I was running 50W - totally separate 12V Truck battery , not connected to the
Range Rover. Antenna 1:1

 Enjoy the ride !

Re: [Elecraft] Random wire lengths for antennas

2017-01-29 Thread a45wg
You can download some code I wrote for this at
https://github.com/timseed/rnd_Wire.git
<https://github.com/timseed/rnd_Wire.git>

For those people who just would like “some data” this is the output of the
program listed above. I have not tried this data in EzNEC etc. The Spectrum I
was checking against from 160m to 10m including full 80m/40m as well as 30m and
60m bands.

Possible good length at 6.0M 19.69Ft
Possible good length at 6.99M 22.94Ft
Possible good length at 8.26M 27.09Ft
Possible good length at 10.1M 33.14Ft
Possible good length at 12.01M 39.39Ft
Possible good length at 13.99M 45.89Ft
Possible good length at 18.01M 59.08Ft
Possible good length at 20.2M 66.28Ft
Possible good length at 24.01M 78.77Ft
Possible good length at 24.77M 81.27Ft
Possible good length at 27.75M 91.06Ft
Possible good length at 29.56M 96.98Ft
Possible good length at 33.03M 108.36Ft
Possible good length at 34.97M 114.72Ft
Possible good length at 40.41M 132.56Ft
Possible good length at 44.34M 145.47Ft
Possible good length at 45.46M 149.13Ft
Possible good length at 48.95M 160.61Ft

Hope this helps,

Re: [Elecraft] Fldigi Mac no TX Audio

2016-11-13 Thread a45wg
The Solution has been found.

Firstly, I checked that Fldigi was not misbehaving on my Mac.

Installed on a spare development Mac, and with no radio connected at all -
pressed CQ, I audibly verified that I could hear the audio comping out of the
Mac’s speakers… It was very nice sounding. (I double checked this with the USB
Codec using the excellent Audio Jack from
Rogue Ameoba - excellent - and again I could hear sound card generated output).

So Mac Ok (IMHO) lets check the K3-S….

1 Usb Cable plugged in - no audio in or out leads (there were this morning !!
thanks Don). Plus I have my Bencher plugged in - which seems to be rather
laughing at me.

K3-S settings
Data Mode-A
MIC SEL Line-In
LIN OUT - Nor 10(I can see this effects the Decode signal
strength on the Mac so this must be correct also)
PTT-KEY OFF-OFF

Scanning the Elecraft archives for the umpteenth time - I found a similar issue
(Thank you Brian — K1LI)

I seemed to need to adjust something called the mic button - Huh … I almost
never use Voice - so I had to read the manual (again) and after a suitable
tweak - it all worked.

Apologies - Apple, Fldigi software developers - nice work Elecraft - Digital
with 1 cable … awesome

regards

[Elecraft] Fldigi Mac no TX Audio

2016-11-12 Thread a45wg
Fellow Elecrafters,
I am trying to do some Digital modes but using the
computer/Software

I am running a MacMini, with K3-S. Software is a Fldigi (3.23-13 latest as of
today).

Wiring - 1 USB cable from K3-S to MacMini.
I am using the RIGCat interface.
Configure->Sound Card -> Audio is set to USB Audio Codec (See below for device
confirmation)
K3-A is in DATA-A mode.

PTT-KEY is set to OFF-OFF (mentioned in the k3.xml right file)

QSY Works
Mode Works
RX Works - nice decoding on the Computer screen

But no TX Output. The K3-S red TX light is on - but nothing ….

As I have decoding on the Screen I am presuming that the USB cable is receiving
Audio from the K3 correctly.

The output from system_profiler SPAudioDataType yields sensible data….
specifically

Devices:

Built-in Output:

  Default System Output Device: Yes
  Manufacturer: Apple Inc.
  Output Channels: 2
  Current SampleRate: 48000
  Transport: Built-in

USB Audio CODEC :

  Default Output Device: Yes
  Manufacturer: Burr-Brown from TI
  Output Channels: 2
  Current SampleRate: 48000
  Transport: USB

USB Audio CODEC :

  Default Input Device: Yes
  Input Channels: 2
  Manufacturer: Burr-Brown from TI
  Current SampleRate: 48000
  Transport: USB

So what am I missing ?

Answers on an electronic postcard please .

Regards

Re: [Elecraft] Windows Emulator

2016-10-12 Thread a45wg
Ted,
Firstly as others have said “do not give up”

I too use professionally (for testing) Oracles excellent VirtualBox -
it is decent VM which for home use will allow you to try almost any OS you wish
to dabble in.
VMWares’s products are also excellent - but are generally tailored for
commercial/large scale VM applications.
There are others KVM, MVS, Hyper-V etc

Do not stress about hypervisor 1 or 2 - You will use a level 2
hypervisor - just accept that and carry on forwards.

The only caveat with home VM’s are these
a) You are always running 2 machines - you have the
physical machine which requires resources such as CPU, memory and disk - plus
you have the VM which also needs the same. So you need to make sure you balance
the load between the two.
b) If you “host” i.e. the machine where the VM software is
installed can not see the device on a USB etc because there is no driver etc -
then you will not be able to utilize this device inside the VM software.
c) You often get what is termed ‘VM-bloat’ as you create a
machine to run a skimmer, then another for Product-X - oh and another for
product-Y - so keep an eye on your disk utilization - I used a separate 1Tb
drive just to handle the 30+ VM’s I use !!

So what have you got to loose - except a little disk space and time

Best regards

Re: [Elecraft] K3: Using Linux - OT

2016-07-31 Thread a45wg
Mike,
What you are possibly getting a little confused is

WINE - which sort of allows Windows executables to run in a Linux
environment. How well this solution works depends upon the Application, and the
DLL’s. This was initially intended for XP/Win NT. Since lots of Windows apps
are now .NET Assemblies this is more tricky to use, as Mono has not been fully
embraced by the Open-Source community.

Virtualisation - Oracle-Virtual Box (KVM and VMware) allows you to run
a different OS (Operating System) machine in another environment (in this case
in a Linux Environment). This solution is the most stable - but at the costs of
further enriching a large US Multi-National. A very good technique and one used
in Data Centres around the world.

Welcome on-board - there may be a few bumps on the way - but you are at
least on the right path.

Re: [Elecraft] Can a KX3 be configured to work like a K0 or K0 mini?

2016-07-24 Thread a45wg

No need to great expense here - look at a set of the new Raspberry Pi. With a
case <$40 each.

Plenty of CPU power in them - plus Cat 5 & Wifi as and 4 usb ports. If you have
a microUSB power supply then a decent SDcard (level 10) and you are all set.

No !!! Bad sales pitch - How about spend $3k now - or spend $2k now and $3k
(when you realised you made a mistake) later….. see spending $3k now much much
cheaper…..

Re: [Elecraft] Help sell me on the K3S

2016-07-04 Thread a45wg
Reuben,
If you do not need Tx - why not just go for a high end SDR Rx. Lots of
really good products out there at the moment - and being SDR easy to upgrade
with software etc. You will need to budget for a decent computer and maybe an
external sound card - but also an option to consider IMHO.

You are not really going to get an un-biased opinion asking a question
like that here… nor would you on the Icom forums

Morgan,
Very interesting report regarding your FD activities.

I have - although I do not use any more a Moxton Rectangle called a
“Cobweb” after Steve Cobb who designed and built it.

My experiences over the past 10 years with it has been

Positive points

a) It Works
b) Tunes well
c) Simple - to Install and Repair
d) Low Weight yielding great survivability
e) Relatively Omni directional

[Elecraft] SDR Processing from IF Output

2016-06-24 Thread a45wg
Fellow Elecrafters,
I have been experimenting with using the IF out from my K3-S to
feed an SDR Radio which will in turn allow me to perform some real time signals
analysis (including but not only cw-skimmer). I have got the setup working
using some cheap RTL-SDR’s which are not designed for HF bands (but with
slightly different firmware can be make to sort of work - down to 20 Mhz they
are bearable).

Is anyone else doing this - I would appreciate some feedback
(preferably positive) regarding more suitable SDR receivers ??

Please feel free to PM me - I shall post back the boiled down wisdom….

73s and thanks

Re: [Elecraft] KXPA100- How impactful to making contacts?

2016-06-21 Thread a45wg
Using 15 W out from my K3-S (Max power for your KX3 as you indicated) my KPA500
pushes out 330 Watts … Why bother with 100W when you can have 330 ?? There is
however a difference in purchase price $2k vs $800 (aprox) - and if you need a
tuner that will be another $700.

Sorry to say I kept the KX3 for mobile/QRP and just got a K3S, KAT500 and
KPA500.

Enjoy your dilemma

Re: [Elecraft] KX3 Utility

2016-06-06 Thread a45wg
In case anyone else is trying to do this - this general procedure should work.
I am starting off with a fairly basic Ubuntu 14 - 64 bit machine

General install for Ubuntu 14 - 64 bit

cd
mkdir kx3
cd kx3
wget http://www.elecraft.com/software/KX3/KX3UtilityLINUX_1_14_4_11.tgz
tar -zxvf KX3UtilityLINUX_1_14_4_11.tgz
cd kx3util_1_14_4_11

Add some 32 bit packages

sudo apt-get install  lib32z1, lib32stdc++6, install libgtk:386

And now it should work

./kx3util

Re: [Elecraft] New products

2016-06-05 Thread a45wg
Interesting set of topics -

I decided to go for the Elecraft route for the simple reason I hoped their
superior RX capabilities would help me make more QSO’s. I have not been
disappointed.

I did not care about touch this or button that. A radio should primarily be for
sending and receiving - what else is added is extra;

Re: [Elecraft] K2 and Linux contest logging

2016-06-04 Thread a45wg
Neil -
2 Great choices here. Elecraft and Linux.

If you want a full contest CW system then you can configure TRLinux.

I would go easy on running things under Wine - as depending upon what DLL’s
have been used - effects how the emulation will work. If you really really need
to use a Windows application and are having in Wine - then consider using a
Virtual Machine (Oracle VirtualBox is free and VERY reliable).

I did recompile get running TLF (Try Left Foot).

If you can program .. Just a little bit…. Then getting a CW capability using
Python is about 2 hours work (Less if I send you the source code).

Re: [Elecraft] P3 vs SDRPlay on Raspberry Pi

2016-04-18 Thread a45wg
Jerry,

This is my SDR Linux view setup. I am running on Ubuntu 14 - 64 bit.

I use QUISK (Version 3.6.11) - to interface my KX3 to a rather old Dell
Inspiron i7. To do this you need the USB Control cable (KXUSB) and a decent
sound card. The sound card on the laptop was mono input only - so I use an ASUS
Xonar U7 as the external Soundcard and this is connected also by USB.

The software is easy and simple to use/setup.

Hope this helps

Re: [Elecraft] OT: HF weather fax

2016-04-11 Thread a45wg
Clint,
Your brother will find it easier to revise the 518 Khz NavText messages
- which are transmitted every 6 hours (if memory serves me correct). They are a
simply RTTY format. I tried for long time to get HF WeFAX to work - but the
number of stations transmitting it are extremely few and far between. They are
more local +/- 1500 kms (more than enough for coastal use). There are some
small black boxes available which do this - for < $200 - which may be worth
looking at.

Should you want a more high-tech solution then I would recommend a Pactor 3
Modem (alas not cheap), an HF Radio and a small laptop (or Raspberry Pi) - and
connect to a mail server using SailMail - and receive a GRIB file - which
allows you to do much better weather modelling than some nasty Fax every did.
It takes less than 90 seconds to receive the GRIB files (assuming you are not
taking masses of data like wave height etc).

Re: [Elecraft] K3 Utility questions

2016-04-01 Thread a45wg
Gary,
I also had a look around for control software - but could find nothing
I really liked (There re some great programs out there) - but either too
complex or not focused on what I want. So….

Write your own ! I know it sounds daunting - but the K3 has an
excellent programming document - and the K3 Utility gives you a test bed to try
out your commands (I would suggest a degree of caution) - once you have that
done - it is simply a matter of an interface - which can be as complex or as
simple as you want.

Assuming you do not want to write your own - but wish to use multiple programs
at the same time - then….

Depending upon the port connection mechanism you are using - will
depend if the port is available for other devices to use. Most software opens a
device similar to a file - i.e. in exclusive mode. Thus blocking other programs
from using that port.

However - there are options….

Mac: the Mac seems quite happy with the /dev/CU-x to allow multiple ports
Windows: I think on Windows you could look for a virtual port driver - and gain
access to the “real” port using virtual ports. I did this years ago for sharing
GPS Receivers amongst programs.
Linux: you should use a Daemon (a Central process that listens to many clients
who wish to talk to the Device). The Linux mechanism is far superior (Opps
maybe I am a little biased, for it could be implemented as a service in Windows
also - its just almost no Windows programmer ever does this) - but it does add
another layer of complexity to the whole control process.

The Daemon/detached process mechanism is best/easiest used using ricgtld
(Linux) - I do see people using it for Windows also - but I have no experience
on that.

Re: [Elecraft] Delayed Options

2016-03-24 Thread a45wg
I bought my KX3 - as a Kit

Battery Charger - I am still 50-50 about if this was a good option
Roofing filters - Worth every penny (or $ or OMR)
CW Key - Quite nice once you get used to it

I did not bother with
ATU - why ? You only have max 15 Watts - Tune your antenna !!!
Mic - I prefer CW

Re: [Elecraft] Contest Settings

2016-03-21 Thread a45wg
Fellow Hams,
Many thanks for the guidelines and suggestions…. I will try and
experiment with some/all of those suggestions.

I had been running with AGC Off - but after having being deafened by
the POPs of several RU using Kw - I went back to AGC Slow - I never knew about
the limit setting for the AF Output !! (Time to read the manual again).

Likewise great info on the various Settings & Operating Modes.

Being a slightly ‘exotic call’, does mean in Contests your rarity
increases (I am sure that also works for US stations in different ITU Zones -
and a lesser extent CQ Zones) - so I 95% of the time have to “Run” a frequency.
Because I almost never do S, I do not use the cluster or any other spotting
utilities (skimmer, Reverse Beacon Network) - so I can enter the un-assisted
section (if there is one) - However should you operate in “Run” mode - then
you cal really tell when you have been spotted on the cluster systems - as the
increase in traffic is exponential. Often too much to cope with. I would
normally work a split - something laughable in contest mode.

Recently I think that the “smart contesters” are increasingly using the
Reverse Beacon Network (or their own skimmers) - with at least 3 stations
always calling me within 2 CQ's after QSY-ing. Interestingly a well known
German Dx contester - would always wait 10 minutes after I QSY-ed…. and the
general melee had calmed down. I do use the RBN network the day prior to the
contest - to try and get a feeling of how well my signals are getting out to
various parts of the world. Alas Asian/Africa seems to be a little lacking in
spotting stations - so it is rather a US/EU centric propogation exercise - but
interesting nevertheless.

Despite sending at 25 WPM - and I can happily receive at that, it often
seems that stations with 1.5KW of power, into some monstrous 4x4x4 12 Element
Array “farm” can only QRS to 32.5 wpm instead of their normal 33 wpm….
Fortunately I do not have to log some of my rather choice comments.

Many thanks for the most excellent suggestions - this list, as well as
the radios it supports continues to amaze and enthral me.

Regards

Tim - A45WG, Muscat. Sultanate of Oman.

[Elecraft] Contest Settings

2016-03-20 Thread a45wg
Fellow Hams,
Having not Contested for over 5 years - I just had spent the
past 24 hours participating in the Russian DX Contest (CW), now I realise that
Contests are not everyone’s cup of tea so please no “Contests should be banned”.

But I would be interested in how other contesters set up their rigs

This is what I have been doing -

0) Narrow Filter enable (500 Hz)
1) Very narrow Bandwidth at times even 10-20 (hz?) is too wide.
2) Vary where I am listening up and down a little
3) Disable PreAmp

What other steps can I do to make my life (and the other stations I am working
easier - I forgot how many times I sent R7?? or NR ??)

Attentate (Just thought of this)
NR Settings ?
Notch filter ?

Appreciate any input - if you wan to PM me - I will put together the common
suggestions.

Many thanks,

[Elecraft] P3 - Control from Python Gui

2016-03-04 Thread a45wg
Fellow Hams,
I have found time to update the P3 Controls - it is now fully GUI - and
you can have any type of split (not negative !!) with a p3 bandwidth of up to
10Khz, with the carrier at any offset you want from (0-5khz)

The code is in my github page at
https://github.com/timseed/Elecraft-K3-Pan-Pile-Up-Settings
<https://github.com/timseed/Elecraft-K3-Pan-Pile-Up-Settings>

It now however requires QT5 (which can be troublesome on certain days
of the week to install) - but once installed - a few more packages (numpy,
pyserial, guidata) and you are done.

If anyone requires any assistance with this - please PM me off-list.

Regards

[Elecraft] P3 Span settings

2016-02-17 Thread a45wg
Fellow Hams,
Having spent the last 2 days playing with the P3 (very
impressed) - and eventually figuring out how to get the Function keys to do
something (Not well explained in the Manual IMHO), I’ve got some Macro’s
working - So next job - in the P3 Display is there any way only to get the P3
Read The “Positive side” of the Span.

Say we have a DX transmitting on 28.030 Mhz …. If I set a Span of 2.5 Khz - I
see in the P3 28.0275 to 28.0325 - a SPAN of 5Khz, +/- 2.5 Khz …. I get that.
Very useful for looking for DX in a wideband mode.

Is there anyway I can only limit the span to be 28.030 - 28.0325 i.e. just the
positive side of the span.

Despite some rather strange DX expedition splits recently (not mentioning a CW
split of +7.5 Khz) I do not think any DX expeditions are using negative splits
(Please, please do not start)

Any advice/guidance would be greatly appreciated. I am sure I can do this in a
Software I/Q SDR process - but I am really only trying to do this from the P3.

Re: [Elecraft] setting up a kx3, when I get one.

2016-02-14 Thread a45wg
The RasberryPI - will work to the KX3. I have used mine on and off for some
development stuff.

Portable will be an issue - unless you have a very small screen for logging (I
personally use a school notebook - and just retype when I get home). What ever
your choice - Raspberry/Phablet/Notebook/Laptop/Road-Warrior battery life will
be your governing issue. It seems pointless to me to drag a 14V power source
just to power a laptop (school notebook requires even less wattage the the KX3)
- use those stored Watts to radiate a signal.

The KX3 - will do digital modes very well - so even /P you do not need a
computer (I would not suggest you try and do contests without one mind you) -
you just need to be able to send Morse (it is amazing to hear the PSK/RTTY
being generated).

You could do some large Macro’s (using the KX3 Utility) and not bother with
most of the CW - but you will always need to say the other parties call-sign
etc. And soon you will want to join the fun of CW operating (which the KX3 does
amazingly well also)

Whatever you choose the KX3 - is a great rig…. and so similar to the K3-S it
makes switching between them almost seamless.

Good

Re: [Elecraft] KX3 with KPA500

I run my K3-S with 10w of drive power and usually get 200W out of the KPA500….

[Elecraft] K3-S - CW Keying for Contests

2016-01-27 Thread a45wg
Fellow Hams,
I received my K3-S a few weeks ago - and I have been
marvelling at it’s features. I still am awaiting the arrival of a rotator - and
them I will hoist some Yagi’s up… but in the meantime - I am enjoying the
awesome RX/TX on this radio….

I used to be quite an active contest station (alas no 4x4x4 here) - on
CW/SSB and Occasionally RTTY - so please may I ask for some steerage/advice
regarding the best way to connect a K3-S to a PC so I can automate some of the
repetition of contest work …. I fully understand and accept "DE TEST” is not
everyone’s cup of tea… But I enjoy it at times.

It appears that WinKeyer is popular - will that suffice just for CW ?
How about Data Modes ??

I would prefer not to have 3 or 4 options - but too keep things simple.
In the “old days” I used to use a SignaLink - which I found flexible and
worthwhile.

OS for PC:
Linux or Mac - NOT Windows

Many thanks for taking the time to read this

[Elecraft] USB Soundcard

2016-01-18 Thread a45wg
Please could anyone shed some light as to what type of USB Sound card I can use
as my entire range of Laptops - are only fitted with Mic-In and not a Stereo
Line-In.

I have managed to procure a stereo 2.5 to 3.5mm male-male audio lead.

I am hoping to be able to see the I/Q output from my recently built KX3 - using
some software tools.

Looking forward to hearing what works/does not work well.

Many thanks

Re: [Elecraft] SDR Processing from KX3 in Python

Terry,

I have been following the Tiny Pan article - but there seems to be little
actual code - more of a set of good Modules/Libraries to use.

I can use Linux/Max as far as OS goes…. I am a Software Engineer by trade - but
SDR is not my bread and butter.

David,
Octave is very good - however some of the functions are not fully
implemented under Ubuntu - especially those trying to resolve FFT at scale
