[Elecraft] K2 warping
I just hate the new Verizon email format. Here I go again! My K2 has developed a warping issue. Recently completed and finally totally assembled the unit does not set flat on the desk or stand. It wobbles. I have loosened the 3d connector screws, set heavy books on the rig on a marble top table and then re-tightened the screws. The rig then sits flat with no wobble. The next morning the warp is back. Has anyone had this issue? Re: [Elecraft] K3 Noise Reduction Improvement
I'd have to agree with you, Roy. In a moment of weakness many months ago, I purchased an IC-7600. While it's a nice radio, it is NOT a K3 nor would I ever use it in a contest or try fighting a pile-up with it (unless it was the only radio available). That said, with all the 7600's lackluster features, the Noise Reduction (NR) on the ICOM far, even greatly exceeds the NR in the K3. The noise reduction itself, the quality of (remaining) signal (QoS), and its ease of use is a marvel and my benchmark NR behavior. While in the K3 you can usually find a decent NR setting, by no means is it easily configurable with it's convoluted algorithm scheme nor is the resultant QoS as clean. My opinion only; YMMV. 73, Dan -- N3ND Date: Sun, 28 Nov 2010 16:27:56 -0500 From: Roy Morris w4...@carolina.rr.com Subject: [Elecraft] K3 Noise Reduction Performance To: elecraft@mailman.qth.net I have two K3s and the NR is the same on both. If I had to identify a feature on the K3 that needs improvement, I would have to say it is the NR. I cannot find a noise reduction setting that is suitable to me. I realize this is a subjective, and you would have to compare the K3s noise reduction with that of another radio. I have owned the Ten-Tec Omni VII which in my opinion has the best NR on SSB without a doubt. I believe it is all in the NR programming and how the algorithms are set up. There has been considerable improvement from the time the K3 was introduced, but I believe there is still room for further improvement. I would like to see noise reduction with a minimum loss of signal fidelity.Roy Morris W4WFB __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
Re: [Elecraft] K3: USB port
I can understand why a lot of old timers want to stay with serial port for the K3. Many people just don't like change. The simple fact is the world has moved on Something like 15 years ago. USB is the standard and a product like the K3 which In many ways is cutting edge should move on also. When was the last time you saw a new computer with serial port or a floppy drive? It can't be that hard to change to USB. There are plenty of $10 items that support it So it must be cheep. I figure it is a lack of will on Elecraft's part. As to the negative comments...Can't and won't never did anything. [Elecraft] K3 Power off (subject change)
Unintentionally powering-off the K3 has happened to me many times and I am just lucky, I guess, that I've seen no problems with a quick response power-on. This almost begs that powering-off the K3 be changed to a long hold as opposed to instantaneous. Indeed, it could be a long hold for both power-on and power-off. Just my opinion. Perhaps the fact that the AGC was disabled at the time might have had something to do with this, though that is just a guess. I accidentally turned off the K3 by pushing the POWER button by mistake, and, cursing my klutziness, immediately pushed the button again to turn it back on, as I was in the middle of a QSO. The radio came back on -- but sans speaker. It has been dead ever since. Configuration settings have been double-checked. It's not a catastrophe for me, because I normally use headphones anyway, but I'd like to get it fixed. Since I'm not reading every post on the list these days, I have probably missed something about this, because I dimly recall seeing some subject headings about the speaker amplifier. I didn't read these. Is this a user-replaceable part? If so, what is involved? And if this part is blowing up regularly, why is it so fragile? Is there something that can be done to better protect it? My K3 was recently (couple months ago) updated at the factory with all applicable mods. Nice idea, but on my front panel (#520), the silk screened TAP=QSY is already partially covered by the oem knob. Adding a larger knob (or cover) may hide it completely. Re: [Elecraft] K3 - Can't seem to make LINE-OUT work properly
Thank you Don for your quick reply. However, I HAVE it set to 'nor' and it still is dependent on AF levels. I have tried to switch it to Phones just to see what difference it makes and I see no difference. I am hooked up to jack on KIO3 which is closest to the side panel with a stereo cable connected to my LINE IN of my computer (Win XP Pro). Still gives widely varying inputs to the computer when AF is rotated. Believe me, I have checked the manual in many places, including the pictures on page 4 and page 57 and page 20 before I emailed. Checking MIC + LIN it says 'not appl'- not sure what this is or why it says this. Is this relevant to the question? Unlike the K3, a $2000 500W amp is not going to be in the best value position in anyone's analysis, although I'm sure they will sell a few to the true believers. Currently, used prices for ALS-600's run $800 to $900 and ALS-1300's are showing up for sale at $1800 to $2000. In my case, there is a finite amount of money available for radio station enhancements. When I can buy a solid state MFJ for ~$1.50/watt or an older no-tune ETO Alpha for ~$1.00/watt, a $4.00/watt Amp that's principal virtue seems to be matching my K3, doesn't have a snow balls chance in Hades of ever gracing my desk. Re: [Elecraft] Handle replacement on K3
Although, properly designed and tightened fasteners should not come apart when you don't want them to, in practice any screw can come loose at any time. Whenever I put together any screw or bolt that I do not expect to take apart routinely, I use Loctite or fingernail polish to 'lock' it in place. When I built the K3 (#4515), I used that on a few screws/nuts, specifically, the handle, the feet, the support bail and the ANT1 and ANT2 hold down screws/nuts. I wouldn't go out of my way to use the stuff, but if you have any problem, just use that. I did not use them on any connector that needed good electrical connections or that I expect to take apart from time to time, e.g. covers, side panels, stand-offs. Best way is to put a drop on the threads INSIDE the nut and then attach it and tighten it, then place a drop on the exposed screw/bolt threads. If you are concerned about electrical connection, then only place it on the exposed screw/bolt threads after tightening it. For the handle, feet and bail, electrical connectivity are not a concern and you will never expect to need to remove these items. IF you DO need to remove them, they can be removed with only a moderate amount of extra effort and it does NOT destroy the threads. To be thorough, there are two different types of Loctite. The usual is designed as described above and is essentially fingernail polish. The other type is a much stronger type for where a near permenant bond is required. This may destroy the nut/bolt if removed, altho some (epoxy) types are designed to be removeable after heating to 400 degrees. Re: [Elecraft] Product Suggestion Big Box K3
Me too, I sold my K3, and my next transceiver purchase will definitely be a big box with a built-in bandscope, better audio, and with more dedicated controls (not as many multi-use buttons). It would be great if Elecraft would offer such a product. With their fantastic customer service, I think Elecraftwould attract many (if not most) Icom and Yaesu customers who would prefer an American alternative, if only they would address the market differently. Having the best performance and specifications from a technical standpoint is obviously a big plus, but for many hams, there is more to enjoying a radio than technical performance alone. Also, I may be wrong, but I don't think portability is a major issue for most hams. I know than many hams think that the K3 is nearly perfect just the way it is. My opinion is that a slightly larger radio with better ergonomics, an updated display, and better audio would not diminish the appeal of this magnificent radio, but would enhance it; and would reward Elecraft with an excellent market share. I discovered with the help of a friend with a scope that the encoder had failed. I replaced the encoder and discovered I have no power out on any band at all. I get HIGH CURRENT every time I hit tune and only .4 watts out on the meter. I ran a ground check on Q19 and the results are G= 96.7 K ohms, S=240.8 ohms, and D=276.2 ohms. I reworked the solder on R20 and RFC14 with no effect. [Elecraft] K3 Field Day
Just my $0.02. On one of the two K3's we had at FD (NR3X), we used an 80M dipole fed with 450 ohm ladder line. Operators could not believe that I terminated the ladder line into a 4:1 balun, then directly into the K3 (KAT3). Using the internal tuner, the antenna became a multi-bander without a glitch. This particular rig was used on all bands except 40M CW, in which another K3 was used. Gotta love it. [Elecraft] Power Poles
I like Paul's idea listed below. Personally, I like APP. If they are assembled correctly, there is more than ample holding power. That said, I AM anal and always support ANY connection with strain relief. Oh, and how the heck can those roll pins fall out? They're in there so tight, you need an awl or other tool to remove them! Again, if they're assembled correctly, . . . . . . Dan -- N3ND BTW, Field Day (NR3X), Class 3A, two K3's, one K2. Is there any other rig? That way, the connector: (1) becomes square in shape, instead of a thin rectangle that's prone to accidental lateral pulls; (2) offers higher current-carrying capabilities; and (3) has significantly increased pull strength, yet can still break away for safety concerns. Just thought of a fourth benefit. A quad APP panel connector can still use the standard ARES 2-pole format in a pinch. So, in an emergency, existing 2-pole APPs could be used with the square-shaped quad-pole being the preferred connector. With the doubling-up on pins on the quad, either side of the quad will mate with the 2-pole APP and there's no possibility of accidental polarity reversal. [Elecraft] K2 VFO problems
Hello all, I have finally gotten my K2 up and running on all bands. What started happening during the final assembly IE speaker installation and top install, is that I cannot change frequencies after a short warmup, and sometimes from a cold startup. Sometimes spinning the VFO knob made it work for a short time. I had no problem like this during my search for low power out on 80 and 15 meters. (I found I had reversed two capacitors on those two bands.) I suspect a cold solder joint somewhere on the front panel board. Any other location suggestions are surely welcomed. [Elecraft] K3 Power Creep
I've seen this posted before, but just noticed it tonight, the first time I've operated the rig on the air since I fixed an intermittent last Saturday. I also just installed version 3.94. The posts I've seen before talked about SSB, but . . . . If I adjust the power control to the power I wish to transmit, when I first transmit the power starts out low but finally creeps up to the correct power output. If I watch the power meter (LP-100A), and even the power meter on the rig, if I have changed the power control going from say 15 watts to 100 watts, the first dits or dahs are at varying but constantly increasing power increments until it reaches its final resting place. It only takes a couple of seconds, if that. Once there, it stays put. Obviously better than a high initial power spike, but nonetheless it shouldn't be. Anyone else see this or am I the unfortunate one with this small issue? 73, Dan -- N3ND __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

[Elecraft] K2 PA replacement kit
Hello all, I just got my PA transistor replacement kit and have a couple of items I want to clarify: 1) the 2n222a transistors I assume are for Q11 and Q13 2) the resistor coded brown-green-gold is for R50 in the Q6 driver circuit. Only one in the entire rig. 3) does both sections of the bottom need to be on for testing or just the front half? 4) when adjusting the transmit power is the maximum power out limited to 2 watts, 5 watts, 10 watts respectively at the 2 watt, 5 watt, 10 watt test level? [Elecraft] [K3] Overvoltage protection?
I recently purchased a 35 amp Astron power supply at a hamfest (in great condition). Upon inspection, I found that the crowbar SCR had failed, and had been removed. Although I've replaced the SCR, I'm wondering if the K3 has overvoltage protection of some kind? As an aside, I would like to test the crowbar circuit in the Astron, but with that big capacitor in there, I'm kind of hesitant. That big capacitor would have to discharge before the primary fuse would blow (maybe blowing the SCR)--right? I'm thinking of putting a 25 amp fuse in series with the capacitor. I just performed an experiment on 40 and 20 meters. I found a CW signal. I turned the AF gain all the way up, and the RF gain all the way down. Then, I turned the RF gain up slowly, with AGC on, and then AGC off. With AGC off, as the RF gain was advanced, I heard the signal well in advance of hearing the noise. With the AGC on, as the RF gain was advance, I heard the noise well in advance of hearing the signal. I repeated this test on many signals, with the same results. [Elecraft] W4ISH comments - Re: [K3] Noisy K3 receiver
Nice summary Bill. Will you please share the AGC setting that you most typically use? Thanks, Dan - W4TQ ... Hello all! I have read the many comments upon the noisy K3 receiver with interest. I, too, have always thought the K3 somewhat noisy, but that is in comparison to the other receivers I have. The best sound from a modern receiver to me has been from the Ten Tec OMNI VII. When I place the RF gain on that radio to about 25-35%, the noise is gone and the signals are still there, for a true treat of listening without fatigue. When I first got the K3, I was disappointed with the fatiguing hiss or artifacts (definitely higher frequencies) which I experienced. Over the two years of having the K3, though, I have seen gradual improvements while I have learned to adjust the AGC parameters. I added all the mods which had to do with audio, and each one brought a little improvement. Now, somedays I am amazed at how quiet the K3 seems to be, with the signals just popping out of the noise, while other days I still wonder what I need to adjust. I also realize that my hearing, which has a peak at approx. 4000-5000 Hz, is somewhat sensitive to higher pitched noise. I do understand that those who find it tiring to listen to the K3 are honestly reporting their experience. Isn't it wonderful that we now have a radio which allows us to become aware of: 1) A spectrum analysis of our hearing loss/gain so we can make adjustments to compensate for damage, age, etc.; 2) Our opportunity to learn the differences in atmospheric and operating conditions, and the specific AGC requirements for each; 3) The wide range of variability among Amateur operators as to their desires and interests 4) A higher level of technological achievement which opens up the possibility of such discussions as these because of the K3's clarity and reproducibility of signals, which in turn allows us to hear what has never been heard before. The K3 is another step in the advancement of Ham Radio technology. It is not the pinnacle (or will not be there forever, anyway) of achievement, but it is among the best we know today. Tomorrow will be a different story. Meanwhile, let us communicate with what we have, while urging Aptos on to even higher goals. Bill, Will you clarify something for me? You mentioned a terminal emulator. If I understand you correctly, with this emulator, you can run two separate applications (a logging program and the K3 utility) at the same time. ...and that both of these applications are accessing and controlling the K3 at the same time via it's serial port. Is this correct? My second question concerns the W2. How is the computer connection made to the W2? Is it not made directly to the W2? What cable goes where? Re: [Elecraft] [MM] W2 connection problem - NZ0T Comment
Thanks for the reply Bill, but I'm still confused. Will you be running more than one application on the W2 through this port? If not, then what is the purpose of using the emulator program as opposed to defining a port via the operating system? (If you are using usb/serial adaptors, you can define as many serial ports via the operating system as you like, right?) Believe me, I'm not being critical. I'm not a computer jock, and I'm trying to understand. I use a logging program that I like very much (DX4WIN), and I would like to be able to use it at the same time as the K3 utility, both addressing the K3. If I understand you correctly, I could make use of the emulator program to run both programs at the same time. Thanks, Dan - W4TQ . Hi Dan, I am using this emulator program: http://eterlogic.com/Products.VSPE.html I use it to run two seperate programs from one port. The program allows me to create a seperate virtual port. I am using actual port 5 and I have created a virtual port 9 which can share applications. The connection to the W2 is a Dynex DX-UBDB9 USB/serial adapter thru the Elecraft supplied serial cable directly to the W2 serial connection. I was WN8DVT-WA8DVT in Dayton in about 1960. See picture of my first stations here: http://s748.photobucket.com/albums/xx121/W4TQ/?action=viewcurrent=StationsLR.jpg The top picture shows my Hallicrafters Sky Champion (was an antique when I got it) and an Ameco AC-1 (AC-1 kit bought mail order from an ad in QST). The next picture, after I got my General, shows on the far right a homebrew single tube 6146 amplifier, and a Heathkit VF1 VFO. On top of the VF1 is a 6AU6 push-pull modulator I built from plans in an old ARRL manual. I used the modulator on the 6146's screen grid. By setting the control grid bias just right, the screen modulation produced a double sideband signal (sort of)--I got good audio reports as such, anyway. I couldn't afford to buy an output transformer to build a plate modulator to run AM. As you can see, my station was in the attic. The antenna was a 40 meter dipole which ran from one end of the attic to the other (just above my head), and then out through a hole to a tree in the front yard. I have K3 s/n 3020 with firmware 3.11. I'm planning to upgrade firmware at the next release--I didn't see 3.14 as important for me. I have in filter locations 1-4 1 - 13 khz, 0 gain, 0 offset 2 - 2.7 khz 5-pole, 0 gain, -.85 offset 3 - 1.8 khz 8-pole, 0 gain, 0 offset 4 - .4 khz 8-pole, 2 gain, 0 offset I did NOT get the AM filter because I did not plan on transmitting AM. I DID get the FM filter because I want to listen to AM (broadcast band and SW), and possibly operate on 10 meter FM. When I try to use the FM filter for AM listening, the results are very poor. Specifically, poor bass and significant ringing, even when adjusted for max bandwidth, which shows as 5 khz on the display. If I turn the FM filter off, and use the 2.7 khz 5-pole filter for AM listening, the results are much better--no ringing and a more open sound with better bass. The FM filter bandwidth is set for 13 khz in the config menu. Did I make an error in judgment when I purchased the FM filter for AM listening, or am I experiencing a technical problem? I have not tried to use the FM filter for 10 meter FM because I haven't heard any detectable signals at my location. Re: [Elecraft] Knobs
Hi Drew, Let's differentiate between an engineering concept and a manufacturing design. The engineering concept of these knobs is certainly reasonable. For example, when nested knobs nest properly, that's just fine.--they look good and work as planned. Great concept! A design that is suitable for manufacturing is quite a different thing, however. Obviously, the goal is for the knobs to work properly not just on your K3, but on ALL other K3's as well. The design dimension tolerances must be specified in view of the manufacturing precision which is available to implement the design concept. Some of us think that a different design concept could be mass produced with more precision so that all of the knobs work properly on all of the K3's. I'm sure there are several who will be glad to hear that this is my last comment on knobs--honest. 73, Dan - W4TQ ps: The superb fit of the K3 chassis/enclosure parts demonstrates that there is someone at Elecraft who thoroughly understands manufacturing design tolerances. Congratulations on a great job in that area of the mechanical design. I have K3 #1029. The nested knobs are perfectly concentric to my eye. The Shift/Width knobs don't fall off and are not too short. None have cracked in one year of almost daily service. Perhaps there have been some incompatible production variations along the way. I don't doubt you are having a problem but have to disagree with your comments about design. The original design seems perfectly adequate if #1029 is any indication. 73, Drew AF2Z __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
[Elecraft] Knobs
I've been reading the posts about knobs for several months, and I was trying to resist the temptation to voice my objection to the knobs on my K3 (#3020). After all, I decided on the K3 because of it's advertised and acclaimed performance, not the cosmetics or knobs. The situation though, reminds me of the line in the original Mash movie (adapted for K3 owners): Just because we're K3 owners, doesn't mean we're barbarians. Translated: we should be able to own one of the best radios ever made AND have knobs that both look good and work properly. No, I wouldn't spend $200, but I would spend enough to make a substantial improvement. Actually, some of the alternatives can also be very expensive. For example, I've considered buying a Pro III just to impress visitors to the shack (beautiful display and nice knobs). Of course when they would leave, I would turn off the Pro III, and turn on the K3. Prior to reading any of the complaints, when I was assembling the K3 and came upon the nested knobs, I couldn't believe that they didn't have brass inserts. I thought, they sure must have come a long way in injection molded plastics to be able to make nested knobs with the necessary dimension controls to assure proper operation. I was also surprised to see that the shift-width-speed-cmp knobs were a push-on design, and they looked like they were too short for the length of the shafts. I tried to keep an open mind, figuring that these guys must know what they are doing--they've produced a radio that some very experienced hams are raving about. Well, after assembly was complete. 1) The nested knobs would not operate unless they were un-nested, due to concentricity problems. Brass inserts would solve the problem, because the brass is drilled after assembly of the knob, assuring concentricity. 2) The shift-width-speed-cmp knobs still don't look right to me. Also, I had a problem with them falling off. Elecraft rushed me a new set of knobs, but the problem continued. I finally but a small dab of contact cement on each knob, to keep them from falling off. I would prefer a knob with a brass insert and a set screw, as opposed to using glue. Group Dynamics at the Radio Factories? If an engineer at one of the major brand radio companies submitted a design with theses knobs, he would be beaten into submission at one of the many stages of design review. While a smaller company like Elecraft can be very agile, and can respond quickly to customer needs there can also be a disadvantage when a key man is invested in a marginal design concept. Junior engineers don't make eye contact, or stare off in a different direction, maybe whistling. You may hear comments like, If you know what's good for you, don't say anything to the old man about those knobs.--just kidding, Wayne. The Missing Link? In a few hundred years when archeologists are examining the remains of old radios, one of the pressing questions will be: Were software defined radios developed because we lost the ability to make knobs, or did we loose the ability to make knobs because of software defined radios? We wouldn't want the K3 to be known as the missing link, would we? Respectfully submitted, Dan - W4TQ (ham for 50 years!) __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

Re: [Elecraft] OT: dummy load antenna
Hi Ron, During the last sunspot cycle, I was playing around with my K2 trying different things with the rig. I think I was on 20 meters, but I can't remember for sure. I heard an F calling CQ (SSB) and I answered him. It turns out that it was a fire fighters club station in France. We had a nice and long QSO, and he gave me a 59+. After the QSO ended, I noticed I had turned the power all the way down while I was playing with the rig, adnd had forgotten to turn it back up! I checked, and I was running less than a watt! If I remember correctly, it indicated around 300 milliwatts! You are right! Milliwatts will cross oceans when the conditions are good! [Elecraft] Attitudes
I was first licensed just three weeks short of my 11th birthday in 1958 (KN4ZZR), and I have been (more or less) actively involved in amateur radio ever since. I have seen a lot of change in that time, but the one constant that has always amazed me is the level of anger among a certain percentage of those involved in this *hobby*. And it is a hobby. After all of these years, I am still amazed at what I don't know. I maintain a list of people whom I am not afraid to ask any question arising from any problem that has stumped me. The knowledge that I have gained, and the friendships that I have made, are priceless. I know from personal experience how off-putting it is to ask someone a question in good faith, and have them blow up, denigrate you, and launch into a rant. I avoid these people at all costs, and I feel badly for them. They are missing much of the joy that this very short life has to offer. I have been passionately involved in aviation since 1965, and I have never experienced this phenomenon in the flying community. People in this community are both eager to help and teach, and to learn. And they have always been uniformly friendly. I don't know what it is about amateur radio that causes (or attracts) this anger, but it is self-defeating. If this hobby is in peril, and if our numbers are shrinking, we need to accept everyone who has an interest, and we need to nurture them and pass on whatever knowledge we have. If they came into the hobby by memorizing the answers to a set of questions, that should be fine. They have shown an interest, and some initiative. It is up to us to make them feel welcome and accepted. It is up to us to bring them from where they are, to where we want them to be. Try it. Some of them might truly surprise you! The first 2 phases I got completed with only a couple of glitches that with your help I got corrected. I completed istalling the parts for phase 3 and started the alignment section as per the manual. I set power to 2 watts and started to tune L1 and L2 to peak the transmitter but to no avail. Further checks per the troubleshooting guides found the diode and resistors in the first few steps were ok. I did not have any signal at r50 using the rf probe. I then went back to checks from phase 1 and was ok until I got to the tone freq and pitch test. I now have NO tone or pitch control and no tone. The display shows the correct values as when I first did them during the construction but no tone is present. I did notice when I hit edit to activate the tone the white noisewent away. Rotating the vfo I can hear faint clicks in the head sets but no tone. I then discovered the birdy tone at 7000 is now very faint and goes away totally when I vary the vfo. I can get it back when I hit edit. Further checks of the transmit section of the rf board finds none of the values listed for the U chips are correct. Mostly where voltage is indicated on the different pins I have either no voltage or double voltage! So far no overheating or smoke is present. Male logic indicate that the problem is in section 3. I have double checked parts placements, filter and transformer windings and can not detect any solder bridges. Thus two questions. 1) suggestions as to where to start from her and 2) where can I obtain a picture of the front and back of the rf board without any components installed. That would make bridge location a little easier for those close pads that are easily bridged. Holding the board up to a strong light helps but a picture is worth a thousand words or light sightings. Most prevalent and especially during contests are key clicks - hard keying - which extend at times several kHz fore and aft of the carrier freq. If AGC PLS is set to OFF the key clicks will surely affect the AGC. In my opinion, the K3 handles this situation better than any other rig I've used - which is many. Again, make sure AGC PLS is nor. Everything calibrates fine, but if I try to use configuration mode, SMTR MD abs as opposed to SMTR MD nor, the S-Meter does not show the calibrated results. It shows the S-Meter reading of the K3 when it is in a no attenuation, no preamp condition. This doesn't sound right to me. [Elecraft] Re: K3: listening to both rcvrs - Reduced receiver noise floor
So the reduction in SNR (assuming equal noise power) is 3.01 dB, not 6 dB. That's the best case if the noise power is equal. If the other receiver has higher noise power (wider bandwidth, more interfering signals, etc.) the S/N reduction is greater. Even 3 dB reduction in S/N is a big hit if the DX Station you're trying to hear is at or just below the noise level. It would be a shame to turn a top performing radio into a mid-pack device by mixing the audio - because of some old wife's tail. Let those who want mixing do it externally so it doesn't impose a S/N penalty otherwise. There seems to be a fundamental mis-understanding on how uncorrelated and correlated noise works. If two receivers are listening to the exact same signal and use the same antenna, then the short answer is that summing the output from these two receivers together will produce the same signal at a level 6 dB higher with no signal to noise change. This assumes the receivers themselves are identical and do not contribute noise (more on this later), so the two receiver outputs will be identical. Band noise from one receiver at any instant in time will look exactly like band noise from the second receiver. The desired stations signal will look the same from both receivers. The point is that magic is not involved, and that neither of these two receivers can tell the difference between band noise and the desired signal and thus will process both the desired station and the band noise the same. Thus, there would be no degradation or improvement in signal to noise ratio as long as we are talking about ideal receivers. However, if the situation is a weak signal situation where the receiver noise floor is at least partially masking the desired signal, we have a different situation. Band noise and stations on the band will both be correlated coming out of both receivers and thus get a 6 dB improvement. On the other hand, the internal noise produced in each receiver is independent and thus uncorrelated. While correlated signals add voltage wise (V + V = 2V or 6 dB gain), uncorrelated noise adds as the square root of the sum of the squares sqrt(V*V + V*V) = 1.4V or 3 dB gain. This means what when adding the output of two identical receivers, the band noise and the desired station signals will increase by 6 dB while the receiver noise contributions will increase by only 3 db. You have in essence created a single composite receiver with a lower noise floor. If you added just enough RF pre-amplification to overcome the signal splitting loss to N receivers, adding more and more receivers in parallel will produce a composite receiver that has a better and better noise floor. This is in essence what the space telescope folks do. They gang many dishes and many receivers together across a very large area to get an enhancement on the signal and space noise and a suppression of the effective receiver noise contribution. Thus, if the noise floor of the receivers are the limit, listening to the same signal with two identical receivers will have the effected of reducing the receiver noise contribution by 3 db. Conversely, that also means that if you are listening on 40m where the band noise is way higher than the receiver sensitivity, reducing the receiver noise contribution will be of no benefit. - Dan Tayloe, N7VE ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. RE: [Elecraft] Re: K3: listening to both rcvrs - Reduced receiver noise floor
This is a nice mental thought experiment. Tune two identical receivers to the same pass band and listen on both. If you sum the outputs together (neglecting the noise generated inside the receivers themselves like we have on a noisy 40m band), the two outputs will be the same. The band noise goes up 2x, the desired signal goes up 2x. Think about what you are proposing: In order for there to be 3 dB SNR degradation, somehow the receiver would have to know what stuff is signal and what stuff is noise and treat them differently. A receiver (other than cases like noise blankers) does not do that. The receiver translates both band noise and desired signal to audio. Thus, as long as the signals external to the two receivers swamp the internal noise of the receivers, summing the two outputs of the two receivers driven from the same antenna will not help or hurt the signal to noise ratio. How can it hurt the SNR? How can the audio output **not add** for the desired signal and **add** for the noise? The desired signal adds the same as the undesired band noise add. I was once fooled by this thinking as well. It helped me a lot to understand that to a receiver everything is a signal. The desired station is signal. The undesired band noise is also a signal. Thus adding the output of two receivers together gets 2x signal and also 2x noise. Both will increase by 6 dB, but the ratio of signal to noise is unchanged. Like I said before, the only potential signal to noise improvement happens when the receiver internal noise starts masking the external desired signals, in which case all external signals double in voltage (both signal and band noise), a 6 dB gain, while the internal noise from the two receivers will not be the same, adding in an uncorrelated manner, seeing only a 3 dB gain. Thus we can see a net signal to noise improvement since the receiver noise component will increase less than the external signal and band noise increases. Receiver noise being a limiting factor happens either under very quite band conditions, or when a very poor antenna is being used. - Dan, N7VE -Original Message- From: Kok Chen [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Monday, November 17, 2008 12:55 PM To: Elecraft Reflector Cc: Tayloe Dan-P26412 Subject: Re: [Elecraft] Re: K3: listening to both rcvrs - Reduced receiver noise floor On Nov 17, 2008, at 10:06 AM, Tayloe Dan-P26412 wrote: Band noise from one receiver at any instant in time will look exactly like band noise from the second receiver. That is true if the two receivers are tuned to the same passband and you are using an identical antenna for the two receivers. In the case of receiving split, you are not looking at the same noise entering the two receivers. In this case, by combining two different passbands, the desired signal would only come from one receiver but the summed noise would come from both receivers, dropping the SNR by 3 dB. An easy test is to subtract two receiver outputs (assuming the receivers are phase coherent). You should get a reasonable null (sky noise and signals are nulled away, leaving just the receiver noise and any gain/phase mismatch in the two passbands) when looking at the same antenna. When you tune one receiver away, the noise level should rise. Come to think of it, it is an easy DSP experiment by looking at the output of two complex mixers using different (numerical) local oscillators. 73 Chen, W7AY ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. [Elecraft] K3 (RX) Handling of Key Clicks
As a die hard CW operator, it's difficult to imagine that after 45 years as a ham, I actually worked my first CWSS. Shame on me. I had a blast just SPing on and off during the weekend. This was the first active CW contest I've had with the K3. While early on after receiving the K3, I had the opportunity to have it side by side with an FT-2000, after a week of A/B comparisons the FT-2000 was relegated to a different location and disconnected from the operating desk. Since CWSS would be a great radio comparative genre, I returned the FT2K back to the operating desk and next to the K3 - again for A/B comparisons. No need to go into real details, save one, as the K3 is the clear winner. On receive what I really noticed far more than anything else is the K3's handling of key-clicks. Yep, there are plenty of stations with key-clicks, but the K3 AGC handles them SO much better than the Yaesu. It almost appeared I could tell by the clicks who was using a K3 and who wasn't. From a transmit side, several stations who I know were using the K3 had no clicks at all - including some whose signal level approached 30 over. Surely in some receivers, a signal that strong may have clicks generated by the RX itself. Both of these observations attest to the effectiveness, quality, and attention to detail realized by Elecraft. Way to go! [Elecraft] K3: No measurable voltage on band data lines?
I'm still trying to debug my problem with the Top Ten band decoders and my K3 (s). When I put a volt meter on the band data output pins of the K3's ACC connector, I don't see any positive voltage (all the pins read zero). When I connect the ACC pins to the Top Ten decoder via an appropriate cable (thus bringing the decoders pull-up resistors into the picture), I see a non-zero voltage on the high pins, but only between 1.6 and 2.2 volts - not 5 volts. Without the connection to the K3 in place, the same pins measure 5 volt (due to the pull-ups). Is this normal - in particular, is it normal not to be able to measure a positive voltage on the high pins of the ACC connector with nothing other than the meter attached? I realize that these are open collector, but I would have expected to read some positive voltage. ***dan, K6IF ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. [Elecraft] Two K3's, Same Band, Same Time?
For Sweepstakes, we are thinking about using a large multi-multi contesting station to house two separate single operator efforts. The station has two yagi antennas on each band, separated by about 500 feet, and element tip to element tip when beaming the US (antennas pointed in parallel). The thought has crossed my mind that two K3's in such a situation might be able to deal with the other signal, even strong and so close, if one station is at the low end of the band (say 14005) and the other is at the high end of the band (say 14075). All four band data lines measure at 5 volts without the K3 connected (thanks to the decoder's pull-up resistors), but only between 1.6 and 2.1 volts with the K3 connected (on lines that should be on - lines that should be off read zero volts). Turns out that isn't a high enough voltage for the decoder chip to read properly, so the band decoder doesn't work. I strongly suspect operator error, but can't figure out what I am doing wrong. Re: [Elecraft] KX1 REMOTE SPEAKER
What I did was sort of homebrew. Several years ago at Dayton, a guy was selling battery-powered PC speakers for $2 a pair (last year, they were $4/pair). I bought a set. Discovered that they ran off 6 D cells, three in one speaker, three in the other. I figured out how to rewire it so that the speaker with the amp board in it ran off a 9V battery. Now, I have a great little amplified speaker to use with not just the KX1, for which I paid two bucks. 73! Only problem was installation of the *$%* battery holders with screws provided. Elecraft sent longer ones but the plastic holders still are too thick for the longer ones too. (Wires are not pinched). This seems to be the weakest link in a great rig. Will build the 80-30 module and ATU next. I have received opposite opinions on which module to install first. I'd welcome any comments. Now the primary question. To stay with the kit concept, I'd welcome suggestions on building, 'not buying', a small amplified speaker with a 2' cord to plug into the phone jack on my KX1. I'm thinking along the lines of using a LM386N chip with a 1 speaker in a small 1 x 1.5 x 4 Rat Shack plastic box. It's just 'gotta' be home brew and small. Any suggestions? 72 Bob, W9EWW ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Subscriber Info (Addr. Re: [Elecraft] (Fwd) Re: My email address
I just sent out thousands of e-mails to the ARRL members in the Great Lakes Division (I'm running for Vice Director). The forwarding service is definitely working. :) 73, Dan KB6NU On Sep 30, 2008, at 4:08 PM, Monty Shultes wrote: I do not think they ever hosted email accounts.
