Re: [Elecraft] Posting serial numbers

2016-12-18 Thread Don Wilhelm

All,

The serial number of a transceiver offered for sale is an important
parameter, and because the upgrade kits are offered by Elecraft, the
state of those upgrades that have been installed is also important to
the potential buyer.

The rig's serial number for For Sale listings is important to those
considering the purchase of a used K2. There was a change in the board
layout to include the prior upgrades at serial number 3000.
If a K2 less than SN 3000 is being offered for sale, the status of the A
to B upgrades and associated mods is a point of great interest.
The cost of the upgrade mod kits is about $160 (includes firmware), so
that needs to be considered when contemplating the purchase of a used K2.

With all that being said, I need to say that a fully upgraded K2 will
perform just as well as a newly built K2. That goes for a used K3 as
well, but the upgrades that have been done needs to be known.

The mailman software being used archives the list for posterity and that
archive is made available online at

index the archive on a regular basis.

It's always possible to use your ARRL email address instead so you can hide

[Elecraft] Posting new Thread on Reglector

2016-01-23 Thread jkiracofe51

RE: [Elecraft] KX3; Procedure for Setting TX CMP & TX EQ + DVR

I desire to utilize both CMP and TX EQ in SSB transmissions on a KX3.

In the KX3 Owners Manual, there are well defined procedures for
setting Mic Gain, CMP and TX EQ, but it leaves doubt as to which to
set first as Mic Gain and CMP are grouped together with TX EQ
described several pages later. This would imply TX EQ would be set
last.

As TX EQ could effect overall audio amplitude peaks, it would seem
that TX EQ should be set first then adjust Mic Gain for proper levels,
then set CMP.

What is the Elecraft recommended procedure / order for setting these
three adjustments ?

My next questions involves storing and playing messages on the DVR
where CMP and TX EQ are desired.

With Mic Gain, CMP and TX EQ set as desired for a CQ message for
example, would the DVR store the message as processed with CMP and TX
EQ active ?

Assume I leave the Mic Gain, CMP and TX EQ at the same setting when
the DVR CQ message was stored … When playing the message back on
the air, would the message be processed twice (CMP & TX EQ), once
during recording and once during playback or just once ?

Feedback will be greatly appreciated.

[Elecraft] Posting an ad for equipment for sale

2014-04-05 Thread Gregory Weber
Sir, I am trying to sell some amateur radio gear for my father who is moving
and due to health reasons will be unable to keep his gear. Here is the ad that
I want to post. Are you able to post this for me? I'm not sure if this is the
right way to post ads in this forum so please advise if I am in error. I joined
the forum recently so I could post this ad. Thank you.
Greg Weber. webhea...@earthlink.net

Experienced MARS and Ham radio operator needs to sell all gear. Included in
this package is a recently purchased ( about 2 years ago for $3400 in Nov 2011
) Elecraft K3-100 high performance 160 - 6 meter transceiver, MFJ Versa Tuner
III model MFJ-962, MFJ Deluxe Versa Tuner II model MFJ-949E, Elecraft P3
Panadapter, Kenwood TS-440S transceiver, Kenwood R-2000 receiver, Astron RS-35M
power supply, and a 30 foot Antenna with tower assembly that separates into
sections for transport. Owner is a retired Navy Senior Chief Radioman and a 20
plus year manager for Motorola who knows his stuff. Their son is selling this
for them and acting as their agent. Health reasons and moving to a smaller
place require this sale. We are requesting $3000 for the Elecraft K3 plus
Panadapter. Everything else is negotiable but would sell the rest for about
$750.

Re: [Elecraft] posting of kx3 shacks and antennas.

2013-08-05 Thread Jim Sheldon
All Elecraft station also - K3/P3/KPA500/KAT500 normally on the desk - KX3 for
portable use and during power outages or (heaven forbid) if the K3 develops a
problem (only once in 3 years and it was MY fault). Antennas at the home QTH
are a Cushcraft A3S tri-bander at 35 feet, nondescript homebrew fan dipole at
35 feet for 40, 30 and 17 meters, ground mounted Butternut HF2V with loading
coil for 160/80/40 (KAT500 tunes it on everything including 6 meters) and a
quarter wave inverted L sloping upward from 30 to 50 feet on 160 meters.

Portable antennas consist of a PAR EndFedZ 40-20-10 wire, a homebrew take-apart
vertical that breaks down to mostly 1 foot sections (MFJ 6' telescopic whip is
a bit longer) and uses a buddi-pole coil and a 21 foot non-resonant vertical
that's collapsible but still too long for convenient portable carry. I use it
mostly at hamfests when demonstrating the K3 and KX3.

Station pix at www.qrz.com - (look up W0EB) and scroll down the page for the
latest shack pix.

Jim - W0EB

I would like to see some of the kx3 shacks and antennas used.

[Elecraft] posting directions

2012-12-22 Thread Mike Goldstein

Hello, Mailman:

Last time I wanted to post a message on the reflector (and I do it
very seldom), I couldn't figure out how to do it!

I guess you have to go to this options link, but the descriptor
for the link doesn't mention posting, it just says
...http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraftTo subscribe to
the list, or to change your subscription options (like set mail
delivery to 'off'), click here for the Options page.

No mention of going here to post a message!

Is there another way to do it? Is the posting option a secret,
like the specials on my favorite restaurant's repertoire, never
shown on the menu, but always available for the asking?

It really should be quite obvious how to do it ... we are in the
communications biz, aren't we?

However, if mail is not getting through because it contains full URLs I
would suspect the real problem is a spam filter somewhere down the line,
as URLs in email are a spam indicator.

Having seen a problem URL, it starts with an IP address, not a domain
name; that is very typical of spammed URLs, so I would say it is almost
certain that the mail is being spam filtered.

(Spammers are either hijacking a machine for which they don't know the
domain name or are using a hosting service outside its terms of service,
so want to make it difficult to trace the hoster and get the site closed
down.)

Doing this with a dynamic IP address is probably even more likely to
result in the mail being filtered.

The correct format for enclosing URLs in email is with no URL: and with
no spaces within the angle brackets. If you find you need the spaces it
is probably to stop the sending email client from recognizing it as a
URL (I think some strip the angle brackets in rich text and may forget
to put them back in plain text).

However, if mail is not getting through because it contains full URLs I

Emails are not formal business letters, whatever businesses may want.
RFC1855 says there should be an address here, but, in a world of spam,
that is no longer good advice, as archive address hiding may not work.

[Elecraft] posting links

2008-03-13 Thread John
The other day I tried to post a link to a picture I had taken of a
problem in my K3. I tried several times to post the link in a mail,
and each time it bounced. I found that if I left the http:/ off the
front of the link, it wouldn't bounce. So, I posted the link without
a http, and asked those interested to just copy the link into their
browser. I received emails saying that it would have been better if
I'd posted the entire link, duh!

I must be doing something wrong because I see other complete links
posted to the list. I ask for your help if anyone has any idea of
what I may be doing wrong.

Enclose it in angle brackets with a prefix URL: and a space separating
the brackets from the URL, like this:

 URL:http://www.elecraft.com

This also prevents most email clients from breaking up the line as if it
were text for long URLs.

 OK,

I've had this problem since joining the reflector.

I just sent a test message to:

The message was promptly returned to my inbox with the following notation:

The following addresses had delivery problems:

elecraft@mailman.qth.net
Permanent Failure: Other address status
Delivery last attempted at Fri, 29 Jun 2007 15:11:03 -

I have tried EVERYTHING I can think of to get a message to the list WITHOUT
using the reply button on someone else's post (as I did with this message).
I know that creates a nesting problem, but don't know how to fix it.

Please tell me the single, correct address to send messages to the

Tom,

Not sure if this is the same problem I had or not, but make sure your email
editor is set for text only for submitting to the list. I had mine defaulted
to HTML and any time I composed a new message and submitted it to the list,
it was rejected. Although, I think I got a message stating so.

If you reply to the list, the email editor defaults to whatever the
originating post was composed with, which is why replies worked for me and
not new submittals.

Your message to me has the headers:

From: Ian Stirling [EMAIL PROTECTED]
To: elecraft@mailman.qth.net

The only way I can get a reply to go to the list is to select Reply
All, which is hidden in a menu. Then a reply goes to the sender and a
separate Cc to the list. You'll probably get two copies of this. :) If
anyone knows how to make Reply All the default option in GMail I'd be
extremely grateful.

GMail does display messages in threads, which is one reason why it is
a very good way to read this list. I can see the In-Reply-To:, but
GMail is obviously clever enough to know that despite that, if the
subject header changes it is probably a new topic.

That's gmail's fault for not providing a reply to list option. You
could send them a feature request (I believe there is an online form for
doing this), but I haven't found them very responsive in the past. Maybe
they just don't like my feature requests! ;-)

GMail does display messages in threads, which is one reason why it is

Well, it groups them together into what gmail calls conversations.
This is not quite the same as a threading email reader which displays
them in a hierarchical tree - and not as useful either.

Incorrect (and non-standard) behaviour for a mail client. Threads often
drift slowly over time, and eventually someone changes the subject line;
or often people will change the subject line to be more specific to
their own post which is still about the same topic. I would not want my
mail reader displaying these as new threads.

Also, any AOL users who don't already know, the default reply mode is HTML.
To defeat this and reply in plain text, right click the mouse cursor in the

Compose in Plain Text. Works for v9.x, haven't tried older versions.

I wish people would understand that hitting reply on a message

a new thread.
Charles, your intended top level, new thread, is nested two deep
in the KAT100 thread started by Scott.

Hitting reply and changing the subject does not start a new thread.
Threads, (references in the usually invisible headers), are a way to
allow changing subjects as topics change and still link to the origins.

Hitting reply within a thread with an unrelated topic is not only
bad netiquette, the sender risks those bored with the thread won't
even see it because they don't open the possibly uninteresting thread
below which it was posted.

A few minutes after I posted, via your email address, a reply to a
news group topic I received the following email. Note that my post
hasn't yet appeared in the newsgroup list - so I'm guessing this came
directly from something between me and you. I translated the Dutch
but it doesn't make sense - unless some kind of spam is attached to
your incoming email.

Relax! There's no need to be paranoid about a simple mistake made by a
fellow on vacation. It's not spam.

If you had indeed translated the Dutch (which does make sense), then you
know that what you got was an automated out of office for vacation type
reply that some configure their office e-mail system to send whenever an
e-mail arrives while they are away, as apparently Andre Koopman has done.

Sometimes people forget that e-mails from any lists to which they subscribed
will trigger this response. Sometimes a list will even repeat it as a new
posting. Fortunately, because only the original poster's email address
shows up in the From line in Elecraft list postings, only the poster gets
the automated reply.

A very minor inconvenience, IMHO.

[Elecraft] Posting rejection and other facts of life

2005-04-01 Thread john . brewer
From: Julian, G4ILO [EMAIL PROTECTED]

I have no idea why my reply to another posting looked like spam, but
there is no excuse for some brain-dead piece of software rejecting posts
to a members-only ...

Wow!

With all due respect, it sounds like it's a good time to take a walk around the
block.

I don't think Elecraft ever said anything about guaranteeing the performance of
the mailing
list, or that there's any obligation for them to even READ the mailing list. I
think pounding
ones shoe on the table because one posting didn't show up, is a completely
unreasonable
justification for starting another mailing list (which assureadly will have the
exact same
chance of rejecting a posting) and certainly not something Elecraft is
responsible for.

I dare say my comment is no great loss to the group, but perhaps there
is some merit in the idea of setting up an alternative list, after all.

Because of a missing posting? You've got to be kidding.

Respectfully,

John K5MO

I must sound my 2 cents on this.
The mailing list is hosted on a sever that Elecraft does not control.
Therefore they do not have the final say so on spam filtering of said
server.
I have had several mailing list post binned by my pop host because of
spam filtering, but got it
Worked out and everything is fine now.
So raising an uproar and talking about setting up an alternate list
is a bit much.
But if you feel so spited that you must continue ranting about the
quality of missing one post
Then you could try http://groups.yahoo.com/group/elecraft/
Probably will not have the same quality and quantity of people there
(much larger base already on this list)
But this is a free choice list and NET so do as you will.

As for me, a post goes elsewhere, doesn't get posted, sorted to SPAM,
or even gets lost completely, well that
Can happen on this wonderful collection of hardware we call the
Internet.

Subject: [Elecraft] Posting rejection and other facts of life

From: Julian, G4ILO [EMAIL PROTECTED]

I have no idea why my reply to another posting looked like spam, but
there is no excuse for some brain-dead piece of software rejecting
posts to a members-only ...

Wow!

With all due respect, it sounds like it's a good time to take a walk
around the block.

I don't think Elecraft ever said anything about guaranteeing the
performance of the mailing list, or that there's any obligation for
them to even READ the mailing list. I think pounding ones shoe on the
table because one posting didn't show up, is a completely
unreasonable justification for starting another mailing list (which
assureadly will have the exact same chance of rejecting a posting)
and certainly not something Elecraft is responsible for.

I dare say my comment is no great loss to the group, but perhaps
there is some merit in the idea of setting up an alternative list,
after all.

Because of a missing posting? You've got to be kidding.

Respectfully,

John K5MO

2005-04-01 Thread Kevin Rock
A few of my net reports have been kicked out of the system. There are
certain words which one should not use since they appear Spam like. The
one both Julian and I used which is on the list is buy. I asked Eric
about the list so I could avoid using the proscribed words but he told me
he did not have access to it. The list is further up the chain than him.
Once I reworded my sentence to avoid the word buy the net report went
through just fine.

  Kevin. KD5ONS

P.S. Buy needs to be in association with some other word (which I have
forgotten).

It's the place where prices for Ham gear have risen through the roof.

There, they don't beg for funds and offer door prizes...it's very, very
commercial.

As the gentleman said. Netiquette (Internet etiquette) specifies that
you quote the minimum necessary for your reply to be understood. Not
everyone has unlimited 'Net access for a fixed price. When I'm in YS,
I have to pay the ISP both for the bytes downloaded and the time
connected. Add to that the phone company charges me by the minute. It
gets expensive fast.

Another hint: Make the first line of your signature -- (two dashes
and a space). This is the standard for indicating the start of a
signature and some email clients can handle them differently than the
rest of the message.

Let me suggest that when responding to a specific
email that you take a minute to edit YOUR reply.

Re: [Elecraft] Posting

2004-11-27 Thread W3FPR - Don Wilhelm

Brian,

Netiquette or not, I prefer to read responses that have the new text on
top - the subject and my memory (I do read most all the posts on this
reflector) are usually sufficient to tell me what I need to know about the
prior information. Scrolling down to find the latest response is a waste of
time IMHO. In a few cases, such as when the original poster asks several
questions, the most expediant thing to do is put the answer to each part in
line with the question - but that is not the normal case. For my part,
please put your response at the beginning. (and yes, do strip out as much of
the extra stuff as is reasonable - the person you are responding to knows
what he asked).

Netiquette also says you shouldn't top post - which is posting your
reply above the quoted text. It can get confusing when there are replies
nessted several layers deep.

A: Because we read from top to bottom.
Q: Why not top post?

Of course, one advantage of bottom posting (not my preference, BTW) is
that the trailing sponsor msgs get seen and deleted.

Etiquette or not, I prefer to pick my nose in expensive restaurants -
but I don't, because that's how society works, and like it or not, I'm a
part of that society. It's the same reason I don't say 10-4 good
buddy! on ham radio.

the subject and my memory are usually sufficient to tell me what I need
to know about the prior information.

I receive anywhere from 500 to 1000 emails a day. The subject and my
memory are often not sufficient. A *short, trimmed* quote above the new
comments does a very good job of putting things in context.

This is especially true in an active discussion, where there are lots of
replies, and replies to replies, etc. It can quickly become very
confusing to know exactly who and what someone is replying to if they
top post.

Scrolling down to find the latest response is a waste of time IMHO.

Scrolling down (having to search for the right spot), then reading
downwards, then scrolling back up a bit (having to search for the right
spot again), and reading downwards again, then scrolling back up a bit
(having to search for the right spot), and reading downwards, etc... is
a bigger waste of time, not to mention being a pain.

For my part, please put your response at the beginning.

Sorry, I will continue to bottom post - as I should.
