Did you know that if you use .LOG as the first line in your notepad
document it inserts the date and time? It creates a great little
journal and automatically inserts the date/time field every time you
open it up.

Subject: Moving Mailboxes between 5.5 servers

We are upgrading the hardware on our Exchange server, and will probably go
the route of two Exchange servers online in the same site, move mailboxes
one workgroup at a time and then take the old server offline. In my
testing, however, I have run across something puzzling, which I cannot seem
to run down in Technet or on the MS website. (Perhaps I'm just not asking
the right question).

When I move a mailbox from one server to another, and then compare the
resources, I get some pretty startling differences in numbers (although not
in mailbox size) - yet, I cannot seem to find anything actually missing...

For example:

OLD SERVER:
Total K: 36,380
Total No. of Items: 3,254
Total No. of Associated Items: 73

NEW SERVER:
Total K: 36,280
Total No. of Items: 571
Total No. of Associated Items: 21

What am I losing? I can't seem to find anything obvious? Does anyone know,
or can you point me in the right direction to figure it out?

Thanks,
Mary Elizabeth

We added the following lines to our logon scripts (it is a reg value that
needs to be changed):

%0\..\REG ADD HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Office\9.0\Outlook\Preferences /v
FBPublishRange /t REG_DWORD /d 0x000c /f
%0\..\REG ADD HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Office\9.0\Outlook\Preferences /v
FBUpdateSecs /t REG_DWORD /d 0x0384 /f

(wrappage, etc value may need to be tweaked for Outlook versions other
than 2K)
PublishRange is the number of months in hexadecimal (c=12 months) and
UpdateSecs is the number of seconds between updates (hexadecimal).

For accounts where no one logs in (like a conference room), you will need to
log into NT under that account, and manually set those options via the
Outlook GUI.

RE: Exchange access through a firewall

2001-11-09 Thread Toni, Randy

The exec's won't put up with it. So when your Exchange server and all the
exec stuff within suddenly belongs to someone else, you can console them
with the fact that they did once-upon-a-time get their e-mails 2 or 3
seconds (or whatever) faster over their much-preferred configuration.

My apologies to Aaron and all for another no-real-tech-help-but-more-rant
posting. Just wanted to drop this note since I'm in the process of reading
the book Hackers Beware (Eric Cole, SANS Institute) and IMHO the intro and
initial chapters of this book would probably be some good ammo for those
fighting the good fight within a management or organizational thought
process that places security concerns at or near the bottom of the priority
list. The entire book is top notch, but the intro in particular is closer
to exec-speak(1).

Get this book (if you can or if you have not already - and there are several
other great sources of info as you know), gather up all the comments like
those from Bruce and the other very knowledgeable admins on this and any
other related lists that you may subscribe to (all the credible answers to
their inevitable why should we bother line of questioning), and let your
boss know what a really, really, really bad idea it is to open up your
server like this. If you have to do it ther way, go down screaming. I piss
off someone here almost daily by doing the right thing or complaining about
the wrong choices (OK, so I only got a C in Organizational Behavior 101
but my conscience is clear and ultimately the users as a whole do benefit).
Strap on the ice-packs and save them from themselves.

I know, easier said than done. What the hell, a career change now and then
isn't so bad. BTW, anybody out there hiring? (just kidding - but my ice
packs are melting...)

walkin' the tightrope...
randy.

(1) Further apologies to those very well-informed execs who do hold
security in a higher regard (some of whom frequent this list and other
security-realted lists and have helped me out a great deal).

I would suggest finding out about the VPN performance problems. VPN should
not be so much slower than native.
Watchguard offers both an IPSEC and a PPTP VPN option.

Doing it this way is asking for the client's Exchange server to be hacked.

Subject: Exchange access through a firewall

The executives at one of our clients do a fair number of road-trips and
have become accustomed to being able to use Outlook to access their
Exchange server directly over the internet. This is not my preferred
solution (it was set up on their old Exchange 5.5 server by one of their
previous support companies), but the execs say that VPN is so much slower
that they won't put up with it.

We recently upgraded their 5.5 server to 2000 and I set up the 2000 server
to allow access through the firewall according to the MS documentation
(Q270836). I have opened the necessary ports (port 135, 3 ports manually
configured in the registry, and port 1026 for authentication), but I have
found that when attempting to connect directly from any internet
connection that numerous time-outs occur (Retry/Work Offline dialog pops
up). Usually, if you press Retry about 3 times (sometimes as many as 15),
it does finally connect and everything seems ok after that. Sometimes it
 connects first try.

Watching the logs on the firewall, it seems that the connection starts to
initialize (traffic on the RFR Interface port, sometimes the IS Interface
port), but then dies. Usually, after trying two or three times, we
finally see traffic on all 5 ports (1026 seems to be the key, obviously)
and suddenly everything connects and works. I don't believe this is a
firewall issue as the logging on the firewall seems to indicate the
traffic isn't even reaching it and we are having no other internet
 connectivity issues there.

The client has a single Exchange 2000 server (SP1) on Win2k Server (SP2).
They have a Watchguard Firebox II firewall. The clients are running Win98
or Win2k and Outlook 2000 with various SR/hotfixes applied. All PCs
exhibit the same problem. I have tried this over cable modem, DSL, and
dial-up connections. The dial-up connections seem a little worse, but
they all have the same problem.

 Any hints would be appreciated...

PublishRange is the number of months in hexadecimal (c=12 months) and
UpdateSecs is the number of seconds between updates (hexadecimal).

For accounts where no one logs in (like a conference room), you will need to
log into NT under that account, and manually set those options via the
Outlook GUI.

Bingo! Thanks Steve, it was defaulted at 2 months. Which
brings me neatly to question 2: Is there any way of changing
that setting for all users, either by SMS'ing a new config
settings out, or through Ex Admin? With 2500 users I'd rather
not have to change them individually...

Check the client's free/busy - normally it is only published
for 6 months. Not sure if that would generate an error but
something that might be interesting to research.

Weird OWA happenings?

2001-11-09 Thread Nelson

OWA is working as it should as far as mail flow should go. However, it
won't let you add appointments to your calendar. When you try to do this
it will return the error: Unable to perform the operation. There are no
problems creating appointments from Outlook. Also, the address book is
unable to find some of the people in the GAL. As an example, lets say I
am
having problems finding Jane Doe. Searching only the last name and first
name fields one at a time return no results. But if I search by her first
name in the Display Name field the correct results are returned. Some
people it will find no matter the search criteria, others you have to play
around with like what was described above. No problems adding contacts,
etc. Any thoughts out there?

We are running exchange 2000, sp1. Thanks!

Backup Exchange using W2K backup

2001-11-09 Thread Kerry Smith

I want to backup
Exchange using the Windows 2000 backup utility but it reports access denied to
all mailboxes except the Administrators. It will only backup the mailboxes that
belong to the logged in account. I also need to backup the store but of course
it reports "file open". How do I "close the store" so that I can back it
up? We will eventually be getting Veritas BackupExec, but until then I
need to get the store and mailboxes backed up.

Exchange 2000, SMTPVS, SMTPC

2001-11-09 Thread Chris Bodnar

Sorry for the beginner question, but this is my first Exchange 2000
install. I am a little confused on Exchange 2K and the SMTPVS and the
SMTPC.

I have set up Exchange 2K and ISA on the same box. Everything is working
fine so far except Inbound Internet e-mail. They can send out, but so far
no incoming e-mail.

I am very familiar with Exchange 5.5 and Proxy 2.0. But Exchange 2K is
very different. I have read the configuration info on www.isaserver.org
concerning this configuration and the Mail Sever Security has been run
successfully and the Packet Filters were created. That all makes sense to
me. Where I get confused is the SMTPVS and the SMTPC. Do you need the
SMTPC? Specifically I know you had to have the Address Space configured in
5.5 on the IMS. But this is now a separate component on Exchange 2K.

Also my internal domain name is different from my external e-mail
addresses. Internal is corp.local.com external is widgets.com. The MX
record has been setup correctly by the ISP, and I have successfully tested
that the external interface of the ISA server is listening on ports 25 and
110 by telneting to them.

The clients e-mail addresses have been changed in AD (Default Policy) in
Exchange System Manager to reflect their Internet e-mail addresses.

What should I be looking for now? I can send out from [EMAIL PROTECTED] but
when I reply, it never makes it back. E-mail address of reply is correct.
I have a feeling it is something misconfigured in the SMTPC, but I just
don’t know.

I have searched TechNet but so far nothing useful.

TIA

Chris Bodnar

Strange IMS problem

2001-11-09 Thread Scott Burgin

I'm baffled!
All NT 4.0 network, Exchange 5.5 with sp4, server NT 4 with sp6.
Our email comes through our parent company so the email address is
[EMAIL PROTECTED] We have a partial T1 connection our site with our
parent.
Here is what's happening. External Incoming SMTP comes in fine. External
Outgoing goes out, but extremely slow. Our IMS Queue has a lot of emails
in it. Yesterday, when I would click on details of a message in the
queue, it would say host unreachable. It was weird because I could
email out to a colleges domain and a yahoo account, but not a hotmail or
aol account. This morning, I noticed the hotmail emails finally went out
after hours of sitting in the queue. Apparently, all the emails willgo
out, but it takes 1 - 3 hours. Looking in event viewer, the only error
that appears to be applicable is an IMC error under application. The
error message is event ID 4132, Technet shows that exact event and error
message and suggests incorrect information in the Routing Address tab of
the Connected Sites property page of the Interent Mail Connector. I
checked and all the information is correct. DNS is working properly. Any
suggestion of theories would be helpful and appreciated.
Thanks,

RE: send as power

2001-11-09 Thread Larry Greenblatt

If you are using an Exchange 5.5 with Outlook, you can set it up through
Outlook instead of at the server.

Highlight the highest part of your mailbox (ex. Outlook Today %username%)
Right-click on it and select properties of Outlook Today Mailbox...
Click on the permissions tab and select the user that you would like to
supply the information with...
You can give them any rights you would like including full ownership if
necessary.
When that person opens your mailbox up, they should be able to do what you
give them access to.

Obviously, they will need to add the From field to their header and put
your name into it.

Hope this helps.

RE: Forwarding Links to Messages in public folders

Please correct me if I am wrong, but I thought the default settings of
Exchange 5.5 and up is set up to just simply put one instance of an email,
posting, calendar, etc,... on the server and anyone that has access to it
just has a pointer to that item.

This is something that Microsoft learned to do when they received complaints
about earlier version databases were filling up extremely fast.

Tracking relayed messages

2001-11-09 Thread Bruce Raymond

Hi guy's. Sorry this email appears long-winded but most of it is the
header information from the email I'm having problems with.

My V.P. has been receiving weird email that is not addressed to him and he
is asking for an explanation. I don't even know how this mail gets to my
server considering the domain is not ours. It's sent to [EMAIL PROTECTED]
which is his username but is not our domain, so I don't know why my server
receives it. I did a whois on 4.21.122.5 which gives the following info:

[No name] (NSB7429-HST)

   Hostname: NS1.STOREYOURWEBPAGES.COM
   Address: 4.21.122.5
   System: ? running ?

   Coordinator:

  1049 Gayley Ave
  Los Angeles, CA 90024
  US
  310-123-1234

Is someone relaying mail through that domain? If so, I still can't
explain how it gets to our Exchange server (5.5 SP4). I guess I should
call or email this guy and tell him someone is relaying through him if in
fact that is the case. Below is the header info from the message:

Mailbox thinks it is a custom recipient

2001-11-09 Thread Bendall, Paul
Title: Mailbox thinks it is a custom recipient

I have an Exchange server that has been restored, long story but the DS and IS both went belly up. Couldn't restore DS initially so reinstalled Exchange into same Org, Site and server had the same name then used the ADC to populate the Exchange DS. Worked a treat, almost, unfortunately a few recipients are listed in the DS as custom recipients even though they were mailboxes. If you look under the IS and the properties on the mailbox you can see it has both items and data. But you can get at it because the DS thinks it is a custom recipient. The client has already run the consistency checker. Has anyone seen this behaviour before, would it be possible to change the recipient from custom recipient to mailbox via raw mode?.

Any advice would be appreciated

TIA

You
still need to be logged in as the service account permissions on the box. What
account did you install e2k with? administrator? or did you use a service

also correct you need to select the exchange server. Not the exchsrvr dir or M

something similar.

Exchange using the Windows 2000 backup utility but it reports access denied to

Hmm,
you could just make an exchange connector to the database (sql, access, act
maybe??) that houses the initial list :).

If you
wanted to put these right into the GAL you could make a 'contact' in e2k, and a
custom recipent, smtp address in the recipent container on
5.5

Absolutely! Create a new public folder that is "Contacts" and
make it read only to everyone that only needs to read it give write

   System: ? running ?

   Coordinator:
  summers, sam (ZHSFRZOHHI) [EMAIL PROTECTED]
  1049 Gayley Ave
  Los Angeles, CA 90024
  US
  310-123-1234

Is someone relaying mail through that domain? If so, I still can't
explain how it gets to our Exchange server (5.5 SP4). I guess I should
call or email this guy and tell him someone is relaying through him if in
fact that is the case. Below is the header info from the message:

If you do not have a backup system, in the event of a
disaster you cannot recover anything. Only restore from CD. I do not believe
any company values its data so little.

Your PRIME job as a sys adm is to insist on a backup
strategy. It's obviously a small company, so for god's sake, we're not talking
megabucks. A cheap DAT drive is only £350. A jaz drive is less than £200. If
they refuse to pay for it, tell them that it's fine. Then re-install exchange
from scratch, re-setting up all the users. If the business makes a decision not
to invest in this area, that is their job. Yours is to make sure they are fully
aware of the consequences of that decision. Direct anyone who complains at the
idiot who refused you the money.

The problem is that the company is too cheap to buy a
backup system. Not
knowing that it will cost them more in the long run for the system
to be
down and to bring someone in to restore or recover it. they are so
cheap
that the servers don't even have CD drives, so i have to copy CD
over
the network to the server. Go Figure.

Anyway, i am going to uninstall Exchange then re-install with the
new
service account. My plan is to then stop the services and either
replace
the whole exchsvr folder or just the priv pub .edb files.
What would
be easier, it has been years since I have had to restore an
Exchange
server and I don't remember the procedure. If possible I would
like to
restore both the accounts the data but i would happy with
just the
data. I know the Org site names so the re-install shouldn't
be the
problem. After I copy the folder or files back over all I should
have to
do is run the consistency checker, correct? Am I missing anything?
What
is the best resource to follow for a restore procedure such as
this?

It could be something to do with the client or mail server that is being
used. Come to think of it I HAVE seen it before. My ex-wife used to
send mails with everyone BCC'd. Checking the header only showed who and
where it had come from, not to whom it was bound. And that was from
Microsoft so I imagine they were using Exchange and Outlook :) So yes,
it can be hidden and the TO address is just a false one probably to a
black hole.

RE: Exchange SMTP Routing

2001-11-09 Thread Rick . Contier

We are running Exch 5.5 sp4 on a mix of 2k sp1 and nt4 sp6.

We have a couple of dual processor nt4 sp6 boxes in the DMZ with port 25
from outside open to them only. These servers have Trend InterScan Virus
Wall and Trend InterScan E-Manager for Virus protection and
content/attachment filtering. They relay all inbound email to our Exchange
Org only after it has been scanned and content has been checked. We find it
works very well for us. The virus walls is configurable to process only
email destined for domains that we specify as well as to allow outbound
email originating internally only from clients that we specify. We find it
a very workable and highly configurable solution.

Currently we run;

Exchange 5.5 SP4
WinNT4.0 Sp 6A

We also currently have our mail routed to us and scanned\filtered by an
outside company which costs $$. We are looking at building a server that
just does SMTP relay\filtering\scanning and put it in our DMZ. We are also
looking at putting Trend virus scanning on the box so that our mail is
scanned by two different AntiVirus companies before delivered to the users
desktops. Our logic behind this is sometimes Trend comes out with a pattern
a little quicker than Symantec, so we do both. We also do attachment
filtering with Norton For Exchange.

I guess I have a couple of questions about this;

1. What is everyone else using for SMTP relay. What software, location of
server, etc.

2. What is the best SMTP relay software\hardware? Should I just use another
install of Exchange on a regular server`?

Any suggestions or relevant web sites will be greatly appreciated.

Shawn

5.6.1 Body type not supported by Remote Host

2001-11-09 Thread Doug Eubank

Hi all, I have a problem that I was wondering if you could help with. I'm
running a single NT/2000 domain behind an ISA firewall on 2000 and Exchange
5.5 on NT. Through ISA I have email forwarded to a separate box running 2000
SMTP with IIS 5.0 for email screening. It is a feature with ISA that allows
you to screen email to block certain attachments, or keywords, or from
certain domains, etc. The 2000 box then forwards on the email to my Exchange
box and from there to my users running Outlook 2000. The problem I'm having
is that several emails a day to several different users are not getting
through form the outside, and come back with this error 'Diagnostic-Code:
smtp;554 5.6.1 Body type not supported by Remote Host'. Also in the Badmail
queue on the 2000 box I get the following error 'This is a MIME-formatted
message. Portions of this message may be unreadable without a MIME-capable
mail program.' The problem stops if I don't relay through the 2000 SMTP
server, so I don't think the problem is with Exchange or my Outlook clients.

I can't find anything in the Knowledge Base, but in my research I did
find from another list where someone was receiving the same error messages
though a similar set-up in which he had a 2000 SMTP (IIS 5.0) server set up
to relay email from a DMZ into a NT box running Exchange 5.5 (IIS 4.0). I
didn't see where he ever found a resolution though. This would lead me to
believe that my problem is not directly caused by the ISA server.
Does anyone have any ideas? Does anyone have a similar setup that runs
successfully, or is there just compatibility issues with 2000 SMTP on IIS
5.0 to NT Exchange 5.5 on IIS 4.0?

Note vs Exch thingy again

2001-11-09 Thread Matt Moore

This is for Michael,
adding extra users in notes 4.x or 5.x is called
"adding a data base" What it does is put another DB Icon on the "work
space". The DBs are added via the users .id files. You can have up
95 DBs on any one "work space". The user then just selects the DB they
want and it asks for their password. I always just named the DBs with the
users name. It is kind of a pain in the ass I spent the better part of a

Help please! Here's the scoop. New CEO who was working with
offline
folders from the exchange server from his previous company. We
needed to
get the data onto our Exchange server. First, copied .ost file
into
another directory to keep a copy. Second, set up personal folders,
third
copied data from offline folders to personal folders. Got errors
on some
of the subfolders for tasks. Fourth, big mistake. Instead of
creating
another profile, I changed his current profile to point to our
exchange
server. We got all his calendar, contacts, notes, and synched some
of
his
tasks from his palm to laptop. But subfolder tasks don't synch to
palm.
So
now he needs to get some of those subfolder tasks that are part of
the
.ost file. His mailbox on his old company is gone, so we can't
reconnect
with that. Of course, since the new server wasn't the original
mailbox,
I
can't see those offline folders. Does anyone have any idea
how I can
get
to the data in that offline file? Not a good impression to
make to the
new CEO!!!

Thanks so much!

Re: Note vs Exch thingy again

2001-11-09 Thread Matt Moore

Almost forgot. You must have the .id file in
the notes folder with the one you used on the original install. As you go
to add a DB (user) you will be able to browse the domino server to find the DB
you want. The domino server then uses the local .id file to authenticate
the user to use the DB on the domino server after this takes place you can add
what ever password you want on the note side. Once they are set up it not hard
for the users to switch between DBs, just click on the icon enter your password
and away they go.

I always just named the DBs with
the users name. It is kind of a pain in the ass I spent the better part
of a week making the changes with pc anywhore to about 200 note clients.
Sorry I can't be more detailed but I'm not running notes anymore. You
must be connected to the domino server to make changes to notes.

Sorry man, I've been lucky for a while
haven't been anywhere near domino or notes. Both just %$@%#*^%$*%(%(^% if
you know what I mean. It's the whole virtual domain on top of a real
domain thing. The names are very similar but oh so different. Like I
said before I've finished my therapy and I'm not looking back.

Help please! Here's the scoop. New CEO
who was working with offline folders from the exchange server from
his previous company. We needed to get the data onto our Exchange server.
First, copied .ost file into another directory to keep a copy.
Second, set up personal folders, third copied data from offline folders to
personal folders. Got errors on some of the subfolders for tasks. Fourth, big
mistake. Instead of creating another profile, I changed his current
profile to point to our exchange server. We got all his calendar,
contacts, notes, and synched some of his tasks from his palm to laptop. But
subfolder tasks don't synch to palm. So now he needs to get some of those
subfolder tasks that are part of the .ost file. His mailbox on his old
company is gone, so we can't reconnect with that. Of course, since the new
server wasn't the original mailbox, I can't see those offline folders.
Does anyone have any idea how I can get to the data in that offline file?
Not a good impression to make to the new CEO!!!
  Thanks so much!

This is something that Microsoft learned to do when they received complaints

We also currently have our mail routed to us and
scanned\filtered by an outside company which costs $$. We
are looking at building a server that just does SMTP
relay\filtering\scanning and put it in our DMZ. We are also
looking at putting Trend virus scanning on the box so that
our mail is scanned by two different AntiVirus companies

this is sometimes Trend comes out with a pattern a little

 I guess I have a couple of questions about this;

 1. What is everyone else using for SMTP relay. What
 software, location of server, etc.

I don't agree with that without exception. NT Servers. Then with IIS. Or
perhaps Exchange. And some gateway antivirus application. Then some backup

RE: Exchange SMTP Routing

2001-11-09 Thread Lefkovics, William

If by administering you mean re-engineering vital components and
eliminating silly potential buffer overflow possibilities etc then I'm right
there with you buddy!

NT is not written well enough from the ground up. You can administer it til
the cows come home. Don't get me wrong, it's decent. But there are
flavours of Unix written and audited line by line from the ground up with
the intention of not being open to any security vulnerability. NT can't
compare to that. It was written to be mass sold and user friendly. It's
not just the OS, but the way applications must work atop it can also expose
NT. You can make it pretty secure, no doubt. But OpenBSD for example is
secure out of the box.

Just my thoughts.

William

Subject:Exchange SMTP Routing

Currently we run;

Exchange 5.5 SP4
WinNT4.0 Sp 6A

We also currently have our mail routed to us and scanned\filtered by an
outside company which costs $$. We are looking at building a server
that just does SMTP relay\filtering\scanning and put it in our DMZ. We
are also looking at putting Trend virus scanning on the box so that our
mail is scanned by two different AntiVirus companies before delivered to
the users desktops. Our logic behind this is sometimes Trend comes out
with a pattern a little quicker than Symantec, so we do both. We also
do attachment filtering with Norton For Exchange.

I guess I have a couple of questions about this;

1. What is everyone else using for SMTP relay. What software, location
of server, etc.

2. What is the best SMTP relay software\hardware? Should I just use
another install of Exchange on a regular server`?

Any suggestions or relevant web sites will be greatly appreciated.

Regards,
Shawn
