Create a folder to receive list traffic. Then use Settings Configure Filters to send all mail there. Right click on the new folder, select Properties, and you can associate the folder with the mailing list, and also set it to use the profile you have created whenever you send while in that foler. [expert] Thinking of switching to Mandrake
I'm thinking of switching to Mandrake from RedHat 9 since RedHat is effectively discontinuing the full-fledged hobbyist version of RedHat and splitting the userbase between Fedora for those of us who don't have several hundred dollars for enterprise linux and those who have the money and need for Enterprise linux. My question is, how well would the switch go? I typically keep my home directory on it's own partition and another partition with some MP3s and other miscellaneous data. I typically blow everything else away and reformat. One thing I liked about RedHat was that when I did this, it would recognize how my system was partitioned and offer to re-use the old partitions. Will Mandrake do this for me? I'm on RedHat 9.0 right now with ext3 file systems throughout. I have used Mandrake before, but the last time I think I used it was back around Mandrake 5 or 6, before they made it so difficult to get ISOs of the distro. I basically liked it then, but there were a few advanced features I wasn't so thrilled with, but I'm looking at giving it another shot. Thanks... Please keep in mind that Mandrake is optimized for Pentium or better (maybe even PII by now!)

You don't give us a lot to go on. I mean, are we talking a 486, a P100, what? I'm guessing a high-end Pentium or better since you said something about a multi-gig hard drive and those wouldn't work in a 486. If you don't already have a good video card, get a really good video card with lots of RAM on it too (Riva TNT based card or Voodoo 3 of some sort are good cards, both available in PCI or AGP!) John

John I suppose I should clarify -- My Omniveiw SE can handle up to 4 ports and the computer selection is PREFERABLY handled by using the scroll lock to scroll through the machines (unfortunately, there's no menu, so you have to cycle through all the machines on the KVM switch) but you can also manually cycle through by using the button on the switch itself to cycle through the machines. It's definitely much easier to use the scroll lock button on the keyboard... :-) John

When you're partitioning your drive to install linux on create a partition named /boot and define it's size as 15MB. That will take care of that problem for you. The other partitions can be what ever size you need them to be. Or just install anyway, and make a boot disk. Then, go get the updated LILO from the COOKER archive and install it. You'll have to boot off the rescue floppy a time or two, but that'll get around the 1024 cylinder problem as well. :-) John

Boy that makes for confidence in this toy. This could be the problem -- ISTR reading that Mandrake "tweaked" ext2 for the 7.1 release. Further, you still haven't said who the hard drive manufacturers are. There are known issues with Western Digital's implementation of Ultra/66 IDE, which according to this list are failures by the MANUFACTURER to follow the standard. They are still, from what I read, complying with the 386-architecture standard instead of the Pentium/Pentium2/Pentium3 architecture requirements. If the hardware manufacturers only pay lip service to the standards, why are you blaming linux? Mandrake has tightened up their code such that "modern" hardware which doesn't follow the standards is broken. Why is that Mandrake's fault? Just because it worked in Mandrake 7.0 (which didn't have as tight timing standards / requirements) doesn't mean that Mandrake 7.1 is broken. Just because it works fine in Windows 2000 (which, AFAIK, still doesn't require the same HIGH standards for hardware as "cutting edge" distributions of linux) doesn't mean it's going to work in Mandrake 7.1 or any other version of linux which compiles for the latest hardware. Your misunderstanding is that since it's broken, that Mandrake has "slipped" when in fact, they've tightened up their code even more. It's not Mandrake's fault that your hard drive manufacturers were too cheap or lazy to fully implement the UDMA/66 standard as it's written. This standard, as I understand it, requires TIGHTER timing standards and even tighter code, despite the fact that Microsoft still insists on 8086-compatible code and the hard drive manufacturers count on that. Quit blaming linux and start challenging your hard drive manufacturers to comply with the standards! John

As far as "its ok to test it on home machines," a journalling filesystem is convenient for them, but they are generally not equipped to "test" it. How many home users have the kind of filesystem load you see on a real file server? Don't know if any of you are aware of who / what SpamCop is / does. However, recently their host suffered a power outage and the server was shut down uncleanly. Julian, the owner/operator of the SpamCop server was grateful. He said that his machine was back up and running VERY quickly, much faster than an ext2fs would have been. :-) John

When I installed Linux on this drive, I forget where I installed Lilo. From what I've read on the Newbie list, if Lilo is on the MBR, I can kiss it good bye by running PM. Can I tell where Lilo is by looking in fstab? Nope, but if you look at your /etc/lilo.conf you should be able to tell. If it says "boot=/dev/hda" it's in the MBR. 3. I should back up my files before messing around with the hard drive geometry. Definitely. :-) 4. The backup method I'm used to, isn't supported in Linux, unless parallel port tape drives have recently been supported? Not AFAIK. Just because Mandrake has gone a step further and made it more difficult to break things as root doesn't mean you've lost any freedom. You CAN by-pass those precautions. John

Now, installing RPMs requires me to SU, but just running RPM queries does not. I'm glad RH fixed that in 6.2 In RH 6.0, I was not able to run RPM queries as a non-root user. John

This kind of "I know better than you" unwelcomed paternalistic coercion is awfully Microsoft-ish. Is this the direction Mandrake is heading? Yuck! Ok. So Mandrake "cripples" some stuff as root to discourage you from running as "root." They have also done so in the security levels, and I don' t hear anyone bitching about MS-like behavior with regards to functionality of some programs under the "high" and "paranoid" security levels. As is pointed out, there is good reason NOT to run as "root." Pretty much every distro out there will prevent you from telnetting into the box as "root" for security reasons (at least Mandrake and RedHat will. I *think* most other distros do as well!) I think it's a Bad Idea (tm) to cry "microsoft" anytime a linux distribution "cripples" something for security reasons. I don't hear anyone bitching about not being able to install RPMs as a user, yet that's *definitely* an "I know better than you" situation of a program being crippled. My $0.02: Shut up and stop running as "root" unless you're actively configuring stuff which requires "root" permissions. If you just want to be able to install an RPM or something, open a console window, su to root and run the rpm installer. Stop trying to defeat the security that's inherent in linux and run as a "user!" John

I was happy with Mandrake 6.0, except I wanted KDE 1.1.2 and the highest I'd been able to upgrade it to was 1.1.1. When I tried to upgrade to 1.1.2, I screwed the pooch and lost my X completely. What was I to do? Reinstall. At that time, the latest release was 7.02. I didn't want to upgrade to that because of all the "bugs" that I'd read about on this list. So, I upgraded to RH 6.2. When KDE2 comes out, I'll likely reformat and reinstall, salvaging my /home directory and some other "storage" type directories. :-) I'm expecting that KDE2 will likely come out around the end of this year, and since Mandrake appears to offer a new version about twice a year, a new version of Mandrake will (hopefully) be available around the first of 2001! :-) Of course, I'll probably wait until 2nd quarter of 2001 to make sure that all the bugs are worked out, but... :-) John
