Standing amidst horse(s) blindfolded would make me very nervous indeed!
Perhaps the horses recognized that sightless humans can't possibly be much
of a threat to their wellbeing! Granted it would be a stretch to conclude
that horses would know the impact of a blindfold (as we do)however,
prey animals are characterized by their keen sight with two eyes (at the
front of the head) establishing depth perception. Whatever mirror neurons
or other neurological sense the horses employ to assess another being's
intent or level of threat, my guess is that the blindfold skews the data
because it adds another variable.

Tonja,

I had a bad fall cantering in an all purpose English saddle that sounds
something like yours, off the right shoulder. My friends tell me the deep
seat of the dressage saddle, which is what I most want to learn, is quite
secure esp with the thigh blocks. I hope they are right and when I am
riding regularly I plan to graduate to a dressage saddle. For now, with
my intermittent riding schedule, I do feel much more secure in a western
saddle. It may be partly due to my mindset, and certainly a strong seat is
the most important thing.but it sure helps to have that horn to grab
onto.

Some on this list have also recommend Australian saddles as a sort of
cross-over between western and english.

Curiously I have found my fjords to be the most trim when they are out on
not-so-lush pasture 12 hours per day (but I limit their time on spring
grass). They move a LOT in a big pasture. I imagine horses, like people,
have different metabolisms even within the same breed. I find it curious
too, that my new vet who was into Arabian horses in his past, thought my
fjords could stand to lose a little weight (cut back on their Strategy and
skip the oats), when the following week my experienced horse friend who
rides Hanoverians met my mare (the chubbier one) and offered her unsolicited
appraisal that Mirakel looks like a good weight.

I have given my mare a nibble, because other horses on my farm get Alfalfa.
I have noticed that she can get loose manure with just a very very small
amount so she gets Timothy. I brought Alfalfa in to the barn for two
boarders and wow, my horses knew it, and instantly began begging. I know
it is highly palatable to horses, and wish I could feed alfalfa because it
is lower in sugars than timothy hay.

On another note. I bought a set of Horseware Ireland shipping boots at a
consignment shop, but did not notice they were pony size. The length fits
my girl, but uh, wow I can't get the Velcro closed around her legs.

If anyone out there has ponies, these boots look brand new. They have a
black background with purple and green plaid, with purple colored 1 seams
around the outside, fully lined with fleece. They are well made boots, and
are really cute. I can sell for $45.00 which is what I paid for them,
 which
 includes shipping.

garden homes that are beautifully landscaped and someone else takes care of
all the mowing, pruning, show removal, etc. We could watch our horses from
our individual paddocks or small pastures behind the house, and go trail
riding or driving along the cart paths or up into the adjacent
national/state parkland. Etc. That's the kind of development I want to
live in.

This message is from: Cherrie Nolden prairieparad...@yahoo.com

 Hi Cheryl,

We feed our Fjords native prairie grass (they harvest it for themselves
year-round), of which a large component is little bluestem. Also mixed in
there is big bluestem, indiangrass, switchgrass, downy brome, sideoats
grama, buffalo grass, blue grama and lots of forbs. Both little and big
bluestem are decreasers in a grazed native prairie, which means that
livestock seek them out like kids seek candy, thus the percent of those
species in the stand decreases as grazing pressure increases (overgrazing).

Big bluestem is preferred by livestock, but would be harder to grow in
Colorado where native short-grass prairie is predominant. The Flint Hills
region of Kansas is essentially bluestem-dominated range. This region of the
country is where the majority of the beef produced in the US is grazed as
stockers. The range is intensively grazed and burned every year for
maximizing productivity of the range and gains on the stockers.

Some producers will put up hay on this ground. If you are buying bluestem
hay, get the bales that have been put up between late June and early July.
This is when the plant is 10-12 inches high and is at the peak for quality
and palatability. Just be sure that the seller certifies it blister beetle
 free.

Our Fjords eat it at every stage but will tend to select other plants once
the bluestem heads out. The desire of livestock for eating those fuzzy seed
heads has been likened to our enjoyment of eating styrofoam peanuts by a
presenter at the Kansas Grazing Lands Coalition Native Rangeland School that
I attended in 2007. Very low palatability.

Bluestem is a warm season grass, with a different carbohydrate structure
than cool season grasses (brome, orchard, fescue, bluegrass, quackgrass,
timothy). According to an October 2000 publication by UW-Extension entitled
Native Grasses for Warm Season Pastures, warm season grasses contain
higher fiber levels and lower relative feed values than cool season
pastures. There is some evidence that these compounds are digested
differently than the fiber in cool season grasses and that our current
quality analyses do not adequately reflect the digestibility of warm season
grasses. I haven't personally had the time to see if more recent research
has been done in this area for warm season grasses.

The Iowa State University book, Pasture Management Guide for Livestock
Producers, shows big bluestem as being fair for hay production, good for
rotational grazing, has good palatability, and doesn't contain any
anti-quality components (alkaloids, coumarin, cyanogenic glycosides,
endophytes, glycosides, tannins, photosensitization compounds). The scale
for this ranking is: Excellent, Good, Fair, Poor.

Cynthia installed a Bar-Bar-A waterer for the horses last year. It works
quite well. The idea is that there is never standing water in the bowl. The
water turns on and fills the bowl when the horses drink, then after a very
short delay it drains to below the frost line. No electricity at all, and
never any ice with which to deal. You can see them on the company's Web
site: http://www.horsedrinker.com/ . These things are really slick, and
though they aren't cheap they should save quite a bit on your electric bill.

Given that I am relatively new to horse keeping, and everything my horses do
seems interesting and remarkable, I still think it is really amazing how my
two fjords navigate a short but steep and muddy hill that separates the
lower paddock by the house (where grain, water and hay are served) from the
upper large pasture. Norrman, a 16 yr old gelding, very experienced at
driving from his former life, always lets 10 year old mare Mirakel go
first. He watches and waits till she is completely down the hill and fully
out of the way before he starts down. With the rain and mud of late, they
both ski the steepest portion part way down from the top, all four hooves
firmly planted. They are so adept! I follow behind last, plodding along
very slowly, hanging onto a non-hot strand of the fencemuch less
gracefully. :)

Some of them can get quite hot! - Never mind, what I wanted to say is
that this classification does not apply to the Fjord Horse. The origin of
the so called warmbloods is a long (= 1000 years) history of mixing lighter
breeds (= desert horses like Sorayas, Arab, Achal-Tekke) into the heavier
populations of multi-purpose working horses of central Europe to produce
horses suited for a light = fast but not armored cavalry. In contrast the
heavy horse breeds in the same period were selected for carrying the heavily
armored knight into a more static person to person battle and later for
pulling the plow in the intensified agriculture on the richer and heavier
soils. Both groups have connections to the original wild horse types as
defined in Speed's theory of the different original types or subspecies of
the horse, but have been created largely by a long and intensive selection
 process for their specified purpose.

The Fjord Horse did not participate in much of those earlier selection
processes as its (multi-)purpose never changed until the 20th century and,
even though there has been some influence of the heavy Dole horse and the
certainly the lighter riding horses, the core of the Fjord breed is very
close to the original archaic pony type, the versatile, intelligent survivor
on poor forage and in adverse climate and rough terrain. Whereas todays
warmbloods and coldbloods are created by human selection for very specific
purposes, the Fjord has been selected largely by the natural conditions of
the Vestland and the more complex needs of the small farmer who had one
 horse to do it all.

For this reason we have such a good multi-purpose horse which is best at
versatility rather than racing or pulling or jumping.

To me it is important not to classify the Fjord as warm or cold or heavy or
light, as this would not do our true multi-purpose horses and their origin
justice. If any association to a certain group is desired they are closest
to the group of pony breeds, with the Welsh, the Exmoor, the Dartmoor, the
Icelandic, the Shetland, the Highland, the Fell, the Dales, the Merens, the
Huzule, the Konik Not bad company to be in. Intentionally I did not
mention the Haflinger, as this is a very recently (in comparison) developed
synthetic breed with the starting point being a cross of a coldblood and an
Arab. That is a different story alltogether.

re: Old Farmer Trick

2008-06-12 Thread Melinda Schumacher
This message is from: Melinda Schumacher [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Hi,

Sorta funny update about my new (pasture) electric fence and the
fence-checker.

My Nigerian dwarf goat wether, Gunner, jumped the paddock fence earlier this
week. This caused me to wonder if the electric fence, now including the new
pasture fence, was charged or not, given that Gunner has never jumped the
paddock fence since it was electrified last fall. I hadn't gotten a
fence-checker yet, so I decided to give the Old Farmer Trick a try. I
wetted a wide blade of grass and tentatively approached the wire, waiting
for those pulses of electricity to flow up my arm. I never felt a thing. I
was still not going to touch the wire with my bare hand, so off I went to
TSC for my fence-checker. It has multiple lights to gradate the voltage, up
to 5500 volts plus. All of them lit up when I tested the wire at a couple
of locations. Guess I have enough juice.

The old phrase your mileage may vary really applies to fencing!

If we would use fiberglass or plastic posts for our main boundary fences,
the whitetail deer would knock them out of commission in very short order.

electric fence newbie

2008-06-04 Thread Melinda Schumacher
This message is from: Melinda Schumacher [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Hi,

Now that it has quit raining, I ventured outside and heard this snapping
sound in the vicinity of my new electric fence. I heard something similar a
couple of days ago, thought this meant the current was arcing, and when I
dislodged the plastic handle of the bungee-cord gate from the bolts of the
associated wooden gate doors, the snapping stopped. Problem solved. But
now I hear the snapping sound again and the bungee cords are appropriately
placed. I am not sure what the snapping means, why the current is arcing if
it is, or how serious of a problem this might be. Can you help?

Of course with all the rain the vegetation is extremely wet and heavy. It
may be that some tree leaves are now touching the wire somewherebut
would that cause the snapping sound/arcing?

thanks,

Melinda,
When you hear that snapping sound look around for a place where the hot wire
is touching something else. Like a weed that has grown too high and is
hitting the hot wire, or the wire is touching another wire or pipe fence
somewhere. Usually if you can hear it, it is not too far from you. Hope
this helps.

over 2 years. The grass/weeds are about 2 to 2.5 feet high. I think I
probably should have it mowed before turning the horses out...correct? What
length should I mow it down to? Can I leave the clippings from this first
mowing lying on the field? any other advice about initial pasture
preparation/management?

I've been acutely aware of the easy-keeper nature of fjords since I got my
Mirakel 2 years ago, and their tendency to gain weight. Mirakel has been
very happy since early last fall with extensive turnout and good
quarterhorse pasture buddies. I was worried about what being on grass so
much would do for her, especially since she wasn't being actively worked and
had had her feed switched from plain oats to Strategy. Then I noticed the
free-choice hay (50-50 alfalfa and orchard grass) in the pasture this
winter! I was a little worried, but I am happy to say that she looks great
and as good, if not better than ever. She has done very well with her
quarterhorse regimen. The farrier commented this weekend that even her
hooves were looking better, that some small separation of the wall had
tightened up (my interpretation of what he saidher hooves were always
basically in great shape).

Interesting to see how experiences can vary with the same breed.

 if we

Alfalfa is coarser than the hay you are feeding. Transition slowly to
 avoid
 possibility of impaction.

The Strategy and Equine Senior amounts are pretty high. Especially since
they both have significant amounts of sugar (in the form of molasses). I
would cut them out entirely and go to a lite feed fed mostly as a vitamin
and mineral supplement. You are unlikely to need extra calories because
 the
alfalfa is likely higher calorie than the orchardgrass mix. If you do
 need
calories, I would try something like wetted beet pulp, or something else.

All of our vets recommend against feeds with molasses.

My vet was suggesting we try pelleted feeds from Elk Grove Milling.
 http://www.elkgrovemilling.com/productline.html His Fort Dodge vaccine
 rep
retired, and then discovered the company. Apparently the owner is
absolutely passionate about quality (does things like drag you out to see
the excellent hay he has found to make into pelletsand only buys hay
that he has seen, sometimes flying hundreds of miles to view hay before
buying). The rep was so impressed that she said she would help him with
 marketing.

They have a barrel exchange program that saves the waste of the feedbags.

Unfortunately, it looks like it may only be available in CA, AZ and NV.
Seems to me you are in Washington?

switching hay

2008-01-16 Thread Melinda Schumacher
This message is from: Melinda Schumacher [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Hi,

I am getting a new batch of hay this week. Previously I had been feeding
orchard grass/mixed grasses, 2nd3rd cutting (if I remember correctly). The
new hay coming is 75% alfalfa and 25% orchard grass. I won't be feeding
fjords with this hay, but a mustang filly, a mini, and 2 dwarf goats.
Besides mixing hays during the transition, are there any other concerns
about switching to alfalfa? Will I need to decrease my grain (4 cups
Strategy/day for the filly and 2 cups Equine Senior/day for the minithis
is what their previous owners fed them). I appreciate your experienced
advice,

I was so excited to see that others had issues with their fjords and
fencing, since my husband does not seem to see the need for my elaborate
setup as he calls it. With his first glance at my new fencing he
proclaimed, What are you getting to put back here now-elephants? Looks
like fr** Fort Knox! I calmly reminded him about the number of prior
posts he had had to replace in the past, and then talked about the bowed and
bent gates, and the time where All that money was running down the
highway. He just scowled and reminded himself why he didn't get down to
 the barn much.
I have seen my fjords push until the post breaks, try to pull off wood
boards, try to time electric tape, and watched 2 of my mares play limbo in
order to get into a miniature donkey paddock, back and forth, back and
forth-just scrunching down enough to run their manes on the tape. All my
fjords are perfect ladies and gentleman when I am handling them, but when I
leave their sight-the party starts. And the funny thing is the 2 non-fjords
stand around and watch, it's fjordvision. What are they going to do next?
Live is never boring with fjords. :)

Hi Melinda, I am sure that one can find Kimberwicke bits for much
less--like $35 or so. But those are made in Pakistan and some are

The specific Kimberwicke I am refering to is a Myler bit, and Myler
bits are expensive! The custom made Mylers are made in America and
cost aproximately $140 or so. The pre-made Mylers are made in China,
which I am not thrilled about, but the Myler brothers themselves
inspect the Chinese made bits and have strict quality control, so they
are probably the best Chinese made bits you could get. They too are
 expensive--like I said $110.00.
Myler bits are supposedly worth the price! I'll let you know if I end
up buying one, what I think of it, if you are interested.

Re: Lauren and Maarta pictured in Practical Horseman

2007-11-06 Thread Melinda Schumacher
This message is from: Melinda Schumacher [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Yes, congratulations to Lauren and Maarta! My mare, Mirakel, is Maarta's
cousin, and since I will never be able to ride like Lauren, I have to rely
on the pedigree for my (tiny) claim to fame. :)

In addition, I am in the process of creating a (life/executive) coaching
business utilizing equine guided education (equine assisted learning) and
creative expression. This was supposed to be my retirement career which
would allow me to retire extra early, in about 5 years, but the time frame
has been unexpectedly speeded up due to circumstances beyond my control
(ie: fickle large corporation and the decline of the American health
system).

Equine Guided Education (EGE) differs from Equine Assisted Psychotherapy
(EAP) by the client base. In EGE, we are working with healthy individuals
or small groups of people (businesses, students, church groups, etc) who are
interested in a fun and effective/efficient
apporach to personal growth and developmentesp focusing on relationship
building with self and others.

This is to be a home-based business initially, and setting up my facilities
and gathering my herd has been occupying much of my preparation efforts for
the last 2 years. I am getting close! To that end, I am looking for an
assistant to provide animal care in exchange for free board (for self and
horse). The position is flexible in terms of duties, possible small
remuneration, and other opportunities for addtl income. If you or someone
you know might be interested in this start-up position (and who knows what
the future might hold?), please email me your contact information or call me
at 614-570-4119.

I am also considering the feasibility of having a small riding school,
utilizing healthy older fjord horses. I am a little hesitant to commit to
another 5 or 6 fjords since my pasture land is limited to about 4 acres.
However, knowing that fjords are such easy keepers, it might be sufficient
for lots of turnout without too much overeating. I was wondering if any of
you would have an opinion as to how realistic my dream is! Also, I am
interested in recommendations of appropriate horses for a beginner to
intermediate riding school, as well as available instructor/s (which could
be the same person as the assistant mentioned above).

thank you for your consideration,
sincerely,

2007-11-04 Thread Melinda Schumacher
This message is from: Melinda Schumacher [EMAIL PROTECTED]

My fjord mare, also 9 yrs old, drinks rather little, and keeps a tidy stall,
the managers at her previous boarding stable pointed out. In fact, they
wondered if she shouldn't be drinking more water (1/2 to 1 bucket/day when
stalled, plus more when turned out). My 2 yr old gypsy gelding on the other
hand, drinks a lot plus plays with the water, and makes a messy stall. They
are otherwise both healthy and reasonably energetic for their breeds. They
both are extremely happy with the extended turnout they are getting at their
new farm, so their water intake is less readily monitored.

I am inclined to agree with you. I have seen these same ads in years past,
as well, and yes, the mares have all been exposed to a stallion once again
this spring/summer. Gee. All rescue cats and dogs are spayed/neutered, no
doubt about it.

I was also noting that their prices are higher than a lot of horses on
equine.com that are purebred and selectively bred and come from family homes
where they have apparently been well loved and cared fornot used as a
machine. Did you notice the hooves on some of these mares?!!!

Not picking on the original poster, but I have done some homework here.

These Fjord foals are for sale. Yesthey are being marketed by a rescue
group. They have been marketed by this and other rescue groups
( pmurescue.org ) ect. comming from the same BREEDER, who, even after
detailing on their own ranch's webpage as being out of the Equine
 Industryfor
going on 4 years now, are still breeding and breeding and breeding and
breeding many Fjord, Fjord cross's, Drafts, Canadians * bred to Fjord
 stallions ect.
ect. ect. Check out the BREEDERS web page
www.ourbluemoonranch.com and you can see their mares, stallions
 including
registered Canadian Fjord studs Marvin and 40 along with the same
 bred
Fjord foals, now $2,000. ( Canadian Fjord registry currently allows
 cross
breeding Fjords, just FYI, nothing fishy there )

In my always not so humble opinion, the RESCUE INDUSTRY is going strong. A
few years ago when Wyeth had contracts with all now but a few Manitoba PMU
ranchs, and allowed their breeders to place rescue foals with rescue
 groups to
avoid the babies resulting from the breeding of mares for the Premerin
 lines
going to the canners, there were legit rescues. Now ???

Dealing with BREEDERS who insist on re-breeding their Premerin line mares
over and over, than selling foals through rescue groups is just
 HELPING
CREATE THE MARKET FOR UNWANTED, GLUT FOALS of every type.

Here are a few brain teaser's for you.

Why are these foals being advertised as PMU rescues, when the breeders
 have
not had contracts going on 4 years now ?

Why, if the ranch's are in such DIRE straights, are they breeding the same
Fjord stallions, Marvin and 40, to both Fjord mares, also being advertised
 as
rescues, as well as cross breeding these Fjord stallions to Belgians,
 Canadians
ect. year after year ? * check out their webpage carefully. On the Animali
site, they have listed to go to CA. on upcoming shippments
 BM Stacy07
 BM Jannie07
 BM Ace07
 BM Gwen07
 BM April07
and BM Joanie07all Fjord foals.BM, meaning Blue Moon
 Ranch.
you will see these ad's next year I predict. Their mares are all
 advertised
as being bred back. Rescues ???

I predict that if the US rescues continue to do business and accept Fjord
foals and others from these same breeders, you will see the same pleas for
RESCUE foals next year...and the next year...and the next.

Hey Im all for breeding and selling quality Fjords. Sold 4 and have one
other out on a try out in the last 6 months, BUT, do your homework and as
 always,
buyer beware of encouraging another horse industry thats directly related
 to

I do a very simple version of training to the mounting block. I walk the
horse around the block, into position and click and reward. Extend your
 arm
out in front of them to give the reward, you don't want them to swing
 their
head toward you or they'll get out of position. I have worked on coming
forward a step at a time prior to mounting block training so if they stop
just short of where I need then to be I give them a little come forward
 signal and click each step.

Don't climb up on the mounting block until you can have the horse stand
still next to the block for as long as it usually takes you to get on. At
first, I click and reward as soon as they stop at the block and are in
position and keep clicking and rewarding as long as they are standing
 still.
If they move away, usually they swing their butt out of position, I walk
them all the way around the mounting block again and back into position.
They quickly learn that if they move they have to walk around and if they
 stand still they get rewarded.

I slowly go up the stairs still clicking for standing and click and reward
them for standing while I wiggle the saddle and then while I flap the
stirrups. If you have a lot of trouble with them swinging around to get
 the
reward. you can have someone stand at their head (not holding them) to
 give
the reward when you click and then gradually fade that person out. If
 they
stay in place for all that, I get on and click. Once you're on, the horse
can turn it's head to get the reward. (They quickly learn to
 differentiate
where to put their heads for the reward depending on whether you're on the
 ground or sitting on them).

Click and reward them as you get you feet in the stirrups and wiggle
 around
a bit clicking them for continuing to stand still. If at any time they
 start
to walk off, I dismount and walk them around the block again. starting
 over.
After a few of these sessions, I only click for getting into position at
 the
block and then again as soon as I get on and one more for standing still
while I get organized. Once they have this down I only click after I've
gotten on, put my feet in the stirrups, and fiddled around a bit. Once
 they
have mounting down from one side, do the whole thing again from the other
 side.

With clicker training, I almost always fade out the click for things they
know well (there's always something new to click), but I always give a
reward for standing while I mount, for girthing, and for an excellent
 verbal
 whoa.

I've trained my now three year old Fjord filly with clicker training since
 I
got her at eight months old. I use a combo of natural horsemanship and
 clicking.

Her favorite game is touch the monster. We hiked all over with her
getting clicked for touching anything I asked her to. We touched garbage
cans, mail boxes, big rocks, plastic, cars, etc. Now if any inanimate
objects slightly startles her I say touch and she goes right over there.

I also click for climbing through brush, over logs, stepping through
 rocks,
up ledges, etc. Standing still for mounting.

I have also taught her to stand straight with her neck slightly arched for
mane trimming which makes things so much easier.

Yes Melinda, I would add electric to boards as well. In fact, especially
board fencing. If a horse was to lean hard enough to break the boards
you could be looking at a pretty dangerous situation. Also, even if the
Fjords aren't leaning for food, if they are scratching or rubbing, the
fence boards could break and pop off. Often too, nails become loose and
 exposed.

 Just my humble opinion.

arch support. I do not know if they come in wide width.

However, I just tried to find them online where I usually buy my Dansko's

hard to come by, and my beloved style isn't even available it seems! I will
have to email the company.

Another late entry into the other life question: I am a retail store

SHOP You would not even BELIEVE the discount I get - the owners are very
generous that way. And I need it, as I have 5 dogs ( 1 retired racing
greyhound, 1 whippet, 3 Italian greyhounds), 3 cats, 2 parrots, and one
fjord. I also do italian greyhound rescue, so the # of dogs can goes up
 sometimes.
I have the honor of working with someone who has been in the tack industry
her whole life, and is an award winning saddle designer. She is teaching me
many things about horses, the horse industry, and exactly how all this tack
fits and works together. She is very good with fjords, and if any one wants
proof that you can indeed get a custom Billy Cook saddle that fits a fjord
like a glove, you can see a good picture of Britta being ridden by my
trainer at the bottom of this page: www.midwestigrescue.com/brittahoof Ignore
the stuff about her hooves - it is a page I am doing for my young nieces who
are all taking riding lessons and I am trying to do a little long distance
education. Britt was a bit hoof-challenged when I got her a year ago, and I
am trying to show them the importance of correct trimming. And yes, I know
she is a bit chubby. Unfortunately, she has become one of the top two mares
in her drylot and now she is getting a little too much time at the round
 bale as a!

Hi Lauren,

I began getting very interested in working with horses when I read Linda
Kohanov's The Tao of Equus. That book really excited and ignited me! And
that is why I chose to get a fjord as my first horse. I figured their
steadiness and intelligence would be good for me with clients.

I am currently doing an apprenticeship with Wisdom Horse Coaching out of
Minneapolis, and I love it. If you are interested you could learn more at
their website wisdomhorsecoaching.com. Epona has an apprenticeship. I
imagine that would be quite good too. What suits me better about Wisdom
Horse is that the program is totally customizable to the apprentices'
needs. Much easier to do that at a distance, for me (I'm in Ohio).

I think there is a lot to be said, and learned, about horses as healers or
helpers of humans. Symbolically the horse represents the deep feminine
(intuition, etc) and facilitates the connection between earth and heaven
(hence, to fly without wings) or the mundane and the spiritual. I am
learning much from my varied experiences with horses, and look forward to
teaching others along with the horses' assistance. I am excited to hear
about others on this list with similar interest and relationship with horse.

lost their confidence. I, as an advanced beginner, lost a lot of ground
when I fell (twice). Both times there weren't serious injuries and
everything has healed fine (although slowly because I'm middle-age), but I
had to learn to ride from scratch with my dressage trainer walking Mirakel
in hand. My trainer fostered a rapid return to comfortable riding for me by
being completely understanding and not pushing me to do anything I wasn't
ready to tryno ridicule and no pressure.

Mirakel has been great: talk about an honest horse! I have had trouble
riding at the trot because ever since I fell off of her, when Mirakel senses
I am getting unbalanced she just stops. I am eaily unbalanced so there has
been more stopping than trotting for a while! The time I fell off (loose
girth) I could tell she was really concerned. She immediately stopped,
stood right by me, and didn't move a muscle until I was up and led her
away. I felt she understood what had happened and really cared about me.

good luck to us all!

 Is
anyone out there willing to share about a big loss of confidence with
horses, and their path back to comfortable horse using? It's the path
back that I'm most hoping to hear about...

 Dear Kate,

With my schedule right now, I an TOTALLY swamped, BUT I HAD to write you
regarding the confidence issue, because I think it is a very very very
 important subject.

I've been training horses since I was old enough to have an owner think I
had something to offer his horse.

 Going back 30+ years.

Fjords alone I've trained over 70 some, and a good percentage stallions.

In my youthful years I did some amazing things with horses that, well
.weren't so amazing. I filled owners walls with trophies and ribbons,
I catch rode at the big AHSA (now USEF) h/j shows, and played with the
 Big
Boys in the QH world, and at all the big time shows... and stood in
line and in front of some pretty highly touted trainers in the nation, on
horses bought with enough money to feed a small nation.

A few years back I lost ALL confidence. Every ounce. It took a couple of
ill mannered horses, too many times on the ground and a few comments from
people who thought I was damaged property, to do it - but it happened.
After spending most of my life with a horse under me, I really thought I
 was
 done.

The first horse and person to open the door for me - to allow me back -
 to
my old self was Patti Jo Walter and her stallion Fair Acre's Ole. BOTH
were/are honest as the day is long and gave me back my confidence. Patti
Jo believed in me and Ole took care of me. Two factors with major
 impact
on regaining confidence. Since then, I've had other good/honest horses and
great owners that have reaffirmed my abilities.

A few years ago I wrote on this list about Denny Emerson..and how he wrote
an article about him loosing HIS confidence on a horse. (he was on the US
Olympic Team). I wrote him and he wrote me back with what I am going to
 tell
 you.

He said to find a GOOD, solid...HONEST horse, a horse that will not take
advantage of your uncertainties. (That kind of horse is out there, Kate -
but they are worth their weight in GOLD).

 And trust him.

Take all the time you need, walk until you are so bored of walking, you
 want
to trot. surround yourself with people who believe in you (true
 friends)
 and it will come back.

DO NOT listen to people who say,...:just do it because
 -
I know it doesn't work that way.it comes back slowly, ... very
slowly.and suddenly one day youhave a horse under you and your
 breathing
, or driving and the old feeling just does come back to you - and it feels
 so good.

I have been truly blessed by a supportive family and extended family of
great friends and owners who trust and believe in me. With that in my
 pocket
I was able to move on...and so will you.

 With respect for your concerns,
 Pat Holland

PS: What does anyone think about the name Mirakelindra for my home?
Mirakel is my horse. From a web translator I found the Norwegian word
indra meaning both heart and home. My sons think the name is too long and
difficult to remember. I love the lyrical quality and the (purported)
meaning (I don't know the Norwegian language). I also like the way it
sneaks my name in there too. Any opinions or other suggestions? [I want
the name to reflect my site in some way, of course, and have some a
poetic/artistic quality. I'm in central Ohio on 10 acres approx 1/3
pasture, 1/3 woods, and 1/3 pond and creek. Other (non-nuisance) animals
living here are hummingbirds, great blue heron, various songbirds, dogs Lucy
and Nanook, and TopKat (cat!). ---thanks]

As I promised last month, I am resending the List rules out at the
beginning of every month. So, since this is the beginning of a new
month, below you will find a copy of the Welcome Message for the
List. It contains the rules which govern the conduct I expect from
the subscribers of the List, as well as some other information you
   may wish to review.

I also mentioned when I sent this out last month, that I had set up
a mechanism by which those of you who enjoy the List could show your
appreciation by helping me with the expenses involved in keeping it
running. As I explained, it costs me 20¢ per year to make sure there
is room for each of you on the server. Since the total number of
subscribers is now within a hair's breadth of 800, and since I have
to pay for increments of 100, those of you who are quick at math
will be able to see I paid $180 for the privilege of hosting this
forum for another year. So, I set up an arrangement with PayPal to
give each of you good folks a way to help me recoup some of this
money. If I could clear only 20¢ from every subscriber, I'd be close
to breaking even. (Remember, PayPal's service charges make it a
donation of 52¢ necessary for me to clear 20¢.) Last month, 9 good
folks kicked in using PayPal and one handed me her donation in cash.
Now I'll have to admit I was at first a little dismayed that only 10
people cared enough about the List to help out, but then I realized
since most of them contributed more than 52¢, a similar response
every month would pretty much cover the costs by the time I have to
   pay for the next year.

Hi,

I also like the saddle I got from Montana Mountain Horse. I thought the
price was very reasonable. My only complaint was that it took much longer
to finish my saddle than originally stated. Unexpected problems happen, but
they were not willing to do anything for me to make up for the extended
delay (eg: free shipping upgrade for quicker delivery). Overall, however,
the customer service was very good. They even kept my photos of Mirakel
modeling their draft tree in order to demonstrate a perfect fit!

I have had great luck with a recent purchase from Montana Mountain Horse,
Inc (out of Buffalo WY, go figure...) They have many western style saddle
to chose from and they will modify their flex draft tree (shorten the bars)
to fit a Fjord or a Haflinger. Their customer service was wonderful! They
sent me just the tree to make sure that it fits and than build the saddle
you chose on that tree. Sounds expensive but it wasn't, by the time it was
said and done, I had a brand new 'custom-like' saddle for under $700. Did I
mention it is really comfortable for the rider as well?
To be fair, I should mention that I am also saving up for the Sensation
treeless dressage saddle that I demoed a while ago. What a comfortable
 saddle!

   Good luck!

The way it is supposed to work is the previous owner sends in the
Transfer Report to me I update the records here then print you a
new Certificate with your name on it mail it to you. That is what
was done in your case by Neil Ruth Sorum. Some breeders just give
the Certificate to the new owner let them deal with the
paperwork. This is NOT a good way to do it. Sometimes the papers
never get sent in we lose track of who owns the horse. Another
problem with not doing the Transfer when the horse is sold is that
the horse is still registered to the previous owner and it could be a
problem with liability if something were to happen.

You can become an NFHR member if you want to. That would keep you up
to date on all of the events etc we have going on. You receive the
Fjord Herald as a part of the membership.

To become an NFHR member all you need to do is fill out the form at
the following link send it to the address on the form. I will get
 you all set up.

Hi everyone, the NFHR registration amnesty period ends on May 31. This is
an excellent opportunity to register all your Fjords at a reduced rate,
especially Fjords older than 3 years. As a registry, we want to encourage
all owners to register their Fjords. Detailed information on the rates
 and
access to the forms can be found at:
 http://www.nfhr.com/2007RegAmnesty.htm.
You can also get information from the registrar, Mike May, at
[EMAIL PROTECTED] or 585-872-4114. There has been a lot of registration
applications submitted recently, so Mike may take a little longer to get
back to you than normal. If you know someone with an unregistered Fjord
Horse, but qualified to be registered, please pass this information to
 them.
 Take care!
