Book review for the Fjord Herald?
This message is from: Alice MacGillivray Hello everyone. Thanks again for the inspiration, facts and stories that contributed to the creation of "Riding Horseback in Purple." Several people on this list are quoted or acknowledged or even behind or in front of the camera. I have a question. Most feedback on the book has been very positive, but has generally been from people with quite a bit of horse experience. As many of you know, the goal of the book is to help adults (adult women in particular) decide whether they are really ready for a horse, and if so, how to prepare well, find the right horse, and develop a solid, lasting relationship. I was chatting with Teressa Kandianis about writing an article for the Herald, and she is interested in getting a review of Riding Horseback in Purple for the Herald by someone who is a relative beginner. Do you know someone who might be willing (or perhaps some of you consider yourselves relative beginners)? The paperback is available through Amazon.com (and many other outlets) or I could arrange for a reviewer to get an e-copy if they've not read it. If you do know someone, please check with them to see if they are keen (rather than volunteering them!) If you are experienced with horses and have found the book interesting or valuable for yourself or clients, there are lots of other venues for reviews such as newsletters or online distributors such as Amazon. Thank you everyone! Fjord Herald Submission Deadline
This message is from: Starfire Farm Quick reminder that the submission deadline for articles and Ads is November 1st. Think about sharing your summer and fall adventures with the rest of the members you know how much you enjoy seeing photos and reading stories about other member's experiences. Articles can be about anything FJORD! From everyday interactions, trail rides, performances and show results, tips on raising or training or just what your Fjord means to you. And, we are always collecting images and short stories (usually just a paragraph) for the "What have you done lately?" series. If you need 'technical' help with your submission, don't be shy -- just ask. Usually you can just email everything to us. Remember -- the Fjord Herald is YOUR publication. Linda, Beth and I just pull it all together and get it out there for everyone to read. Without YOUR submissions, we have no Fjord Herald. And, along those same lines, your advertising support goes a long way toward keeping the publication viable. Consider renewing your "Friend of the Fjord Herald" today! Fjord Herald
This message is from: "Debby" Received my wonderful copy of the Fjord Heralds fall edition. Wonderful wonderful wonderful! Everyone out working those fjords and having fun. Me, I'm still trying to dry out after what seems like weeks of rain, with more scheduled. The ground hasn't dried. As much as I disliked the winters in Missouri, was good when the winters came and the bugs left and the ground froze. As long as there wasn't ice to deal with...that could be treacherous. So, on page 13, Neil Sorum is driving his guy with a 2wheel cart and I'd like to know what brand. Looks easy to get into. What about the shafts, the curve at the front. Advantage, disadvantage. I see he's using the strap from the breast collar through the front legs, to the girth...Is this to keep the breast collar in place so it doesn't choke? thanks for any information. The fjord Herald
This message is from: [EMAIL PROTECTED] I received the Herald today and read through some very nice articles and well written passages and beautiful pictures, however when I came to one article in particular Training a bit less, voice only fjord. I have to say that It gave me very uncomfortable feeling in many comments such as horses not wanting to please humans (which I have found to be just the opposite especially with the Fjords) and if this method were tried by many of the people that I have seen, well I think that I would stay off the road and under safe cover. Using force and discomfort as a primary training method is only saying to me that we as humans have not evolved very far. As stated in this article the author only has experience with negative re-enforcement. Well I must say that a good boy or girl and a lot of good pats a Fjord will do anything for you, even leave their beloved food pile to perform. So I am rather disappointed with this article. I do not feel it is sound and safe as method that should be advocated in a breed magazine..I am interested in how everyone else felt and is this really an appropriate place for this sort of thing? Spring Fjord Herald Submission DEADLINE is Feb 1
This message is from: Starfire Farm <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Just a quick reminder that we're quickly approaching another Fjord Herald submission deadline. Please don't wait until the last minute to send us your article/photos etc. The submission deadline is the LAST date for submission - not the ONLY date, nor necessarily the one you should shot for. As amazing as this might sound, even though there are three months between issues, I'd bet that over 80% of the submissions arrive within a couple days of that deadline (often more AFTER the deadline than before!) As always, we'd love to hear how you've spent the first half or your winter and get photos of you and your Fjords participating in winter activities. The Spring issue has traditionally been the issue where we feature a calendar of events that will take place throughout the year. If you know of an event that you want to share with the membership, send us a description of the event, date, cost and contact information. I heard from one of our Canadian members the other day who JUST got their Fall issue on January 3rd. Hopefully everyone has that issue now! If not send me an email at [EMAIL PROTECTED] and we'll follow up on it. Seems like there has been a couple months between the first issue making it into a member's hands and the last issue to arrive. If you're just getting your Fall issue, you'd better read quickly because the Winter issue is right on its tail. As a matter of fact, the Winter issue is at the printer and should be mailed soon. Thanks to Mike May for getting all the necessary paper work and fees taken care of, the Winter issue will be mailed as a "Periodical" which should even out the mailing times differences and everyone should get their copy in a reasonable time. This is just a reminder that we have moved the submission deadline up one month to try to get these issues to you in a more "season timely" manner. The next (Winter) issue's deadline was yesterday, but because we've changed the deadline, we can be somewhat flexible regarding the Nov. 1st deadline date. Next Fjord Herald Deadline (Stallion Issue!)
This message is from: Starfire Farm <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Hello Everyone, The Fall issue of the Fjord Herald will soon be on it's way to the printer, so hopefully you'll be receiving it in your mail in a few weeks. This is a reminder that, as of the Winter issue, the submission deadline is moving forward by one month, therefore THE SUBMISSION DEADLINE FOR THE WINTER HERALD IS NOVEMBER 1st. It takes Sandy and I about 6 weeks to pull everything together; editing articles, selecting photographs, soliciting photographs, chasing down show results, information about events, information for captions, etc., etc. Then, we send the material off to Linda Yutzy, who, like a good puzzle, puts everything into magazine format (she is REALLY good at it!) Then we have to proof everything (again). That could take a few days. We realize we all have busy lives, but if your submissions are late, it slows things down and makes US late! Sometimes our computers crash. Some of us have experienced production-interrupting weather, etc., etc. So, keep the new deadline in mind. STALLION OWNERS...you should consider the Winter issue of the Herald as your Stallion Issue. Now is the time to place your ads. ***If you would like Sandy and I to create an ad for you, please send us your request and your material in the next couple of weeks. Or, at the very least, BY the deadline. We can create your ad (for a fee of $50.00 per hour, minimum one hour). You've seen our work in a significant number of ads in past issues of the Herald. If you would like to know which ones, just ask (of course, the Starfire ones are ours! ;-) Thanks! This message is from: Starfire Farm <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Just a reminder that we are quickly approaching another Fjord Herald submission deadline (September 1st). Get those articles (with high quality photos!) to us and, remember, that the fall issue is when we welcome all the new foals into the Fjord family. When you send us foal pictures, please include the foal's name, gender, colro, dam & sire, and owner's name. We haven't received many foal photos yet -- but I know there are a bunch of cute photos just waiting to be sent, right? So My Bad, I was late in sending in my membership fees, but hopefully will still get the winter edition. We are getting pretty frustrated here in Fairbanks with this late winter cold snap; The last three weeks have been the coldest since 1904 for this time of year! and it will continue for another week. And they talk about global warming! Just glad it didn't happen in January, otherwise it would have been 50-60 below. As it is , the warmth of the sun during the day warms it up almost to Zero! My water line from my well froze up this morning, as I had neglected to plug in the heat tape. It has been years since THAT happened! Next to go will be the septic system. I did plug in the heat tape to the well tho, and got my water working again. Jean, frustrated in the endless winter in Fairbanks, Alaska Maybe mail is not delivered your way in the winter. Photos/Stories from Winona for next Fjord Herald
This message is from: Starfire Farm <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> I had hoped to take lots and lots of photos at Winona -- and due to our busy schedule and the number of horses we were caring for, I didn't take a sinlge one!! I would have encouraged everyone to send photos for us to consider using for the Winter issue anyway, but now, I'm REALLY needing your help. I spoke with a few people individually while at the show, but I know there are many people I didn't speak with who took photos that might be fun to include. So as not to overload my computer, I'm going to ask that you submit the photos on a CD (or DVD) and mail them to us at: Beth Beymer/Sandy North 2012 Blue Mountain Ave Berthoud, CO 80513 PLEASE -- put your name on the CD, a contact phone number or Email address and please make it clear who gets the photo credit. Please include a note (signed and dated) with the CD that states you are giving the Fjord Herald permission to use your photos. And, don't wait -- do it soon so we have time to look at all the submissions without impacting the publication schedule. Secondly, I know there are some wonderful, touching, heartwarming, humorous stories from the show. (I can think of a few weather-related tidbits too!) If you have a story to share, send that along too. You can write it up as a short article, or just send us an Email. Depending on what we get, we'll figure out how to include them in the Winter issue. We are planning on devoting a significant part of the Winter issue to the 25th Anniversary event -- and the more good photos/stories we can include the better it will be! We'd really like to paint a picture for the NFHR members who didn't make it to the show and recreate it for those of us who were lucky enough to be there. Re: Fjord Herald??? Trailer Safety
This message is from: "jgayle" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> What a horrible story and sight with that horse trailer. I had mine checked every two years and they thought I was too picky. An iron hammer tapped on the boards often tells you if they are firm. I have wished that the cross bars under the boards was about every two feet instead of the distances in most. I also bought extra heavy rubber pads hoping that distributed the weight more evenly. Also I have not received my Herald either and will contact Mike for another one. Mike are you there? Fjord Herald??? Trailer Safety
This message is from: [EMAIL PROTECTED] OK, Fess up somebody. You got 2 Fjord Heralds. Mine somehow got stuck to yours and you thought, "finders keepers". Well, mail it on to me. I am dying of curiosity. Beth and Sandy put together a Fjord Herald that I can't live without. Have you no sympathy for my suffering? Regarding trailer safety: This cooincidence can't happen but it did. Friday I was approaching a 4 way intersection that has a round center. That means that every vehicle goes around with centrifugal force. Well, I watched as a horse trailer came round and a horse's right rear hoof came thru the floor. The jolting and curving thru the intersection caused him to place much of his weight suddenly on that right rear hoof. Actually, I think it was a mule. I can still see his horrible reaction as though it were photographed into my mind. I'll spare you the rest of the story. It was awful. If I had only not been there in that several second moment. Please folks. Check the floors of your trailers. We once bought a "fixer upper" knowing it needed work. It was a learning experience. The outer edges of the floor had rotted first, due to manure and the metal framework slowing the dry out. Do not think that if the center seems firm the horse is safe. Do not think that if it feels safe to your people weight on your shoes it is safe if 3/4 of a horse's weight comes suddenly down on that dangerous outer area. Clean the trailer and check it thouroughly. Sylvia Riddle, Teddy Bear Fjords, Spokane

This message is from: [EMAIL PROTECTED] I'm replying to Sandy North's comments in Digest #202. I really appreciate the time you spent discussing the Herald operations, Sandy. I agree that when Sally was editor, the Herald was predictable with its publication schedule. Then the Herald went into the debacle of "the new editor," the person who was unable to publish it and we went through about half a year of no Herald and all of sudden, two issues within weeks of each other. As an annual advertiser, it is was very disconcerting. I note that none of the advertisers during that time were given any compensation for that annual cycle. I think everyone likes the content of the Herald and its attractiveness. My point is that the advertising pays for magazine and we should be able to get it published and distributed on time, most of the time. I'm not blaming anyone, but hoping that a solution can be found to improve timeliness. Ironically, I did receive my Herald after posting to this list. (Perhaps I should have done so sooner to make it appear.) I advertise in coop with Deep Creek Farm. Alas, our lovely camera ready ad which is published in several local horse magazines without trouble looked like it had gone though the fade machine in the Herald. In fairness to Sandy, we were contacted in advance and offered compensation for our ruined ad. However, it does beg the question as to who proofs the blueline, as our problem happened in the last issue to another breeder and Issue 79 has several overstrikes in the text. It is disappointing that such obvious problems were overlooked in proofing. Given the problems with the printer and the entire distribution system for the magazine, I definitely would prefer to get electronic copy. This message is from: Holly Tuck <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Thanks Sandy, Beth and Linda, I am new to the NFHR as of this year but I do get my issue quite early. I think it may have something to do with living in Canada. I live in Northwestern Ontario, which is just east of central Canada. I enjoy the magazine very much and would hate to see it go strictly online as I too am a saver and like to refer back to the magazines from time to time. I have had my magazine for at least three weeks now. Thanks for all your hard work, without you the magazine wouldn't be what it is. This message is from: Starfire Farm <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Margaret, I am truly sorry that you are frustrated by the Fjord Herald's delivery schedule. The summer issue did run about 3 weeks late, and for that I do apologize -- but all the other issues that Beth and I have been responsible for have been pretty much on schedule. And, although there may be an occassional late issue, we certainly don't plan to make a habit of it. Sometimes there are things out of your control, and sometimes "real life" gets in the way. From your Email, the fact that this one issue is late does not seem to be the real problem. It sounds like you feel the Fjord Herald has been consistently late. So, I'd like to take this opportunity to explain a little bit about our internal workings/schedules in the hopes that the data will allow you to better predict when each issue of the Fjord Herald will land in subscriber's mailboxes. As with any publication, there is some amount of time between the submission date and the arrival of the publication in your mailbox. My guess is that the amount of time varies from publication to publication. For the Fjord Herald, we strive to get the magazine content gathered, editted, formatted and proofed within 6 weeks. All three of us that represent the Fjord Herald production team (Linda Yutzy, Beth Beymer and I) have other, full-time jobs. So this work is done in the evenings and on weekends. To be quite frank, we work our tails off to get it done in 6 weeks! Then it goes to the printer. Printing usually takes 10-14 days. The summer issue had a glich in the printing process and the covers had to be redone (that's an example of things "out of our control"). Then off to the mailing house. I'm not sure how much time the mailing house adds to our production time, but it is probably several days to a week. Once the US Postal service has them it gets a litttle fuzzy. Since the Fjord Herald is currently mailed 3rd class, there is a HUGE variation in delivery times. Beth and I have had our Fjord Herald for a couple of weeks while other folks, like you, haven't seen it yet. Mike May is still working to get the Fjord Herald classified as a periodical which would improve some folks delivery time significantly. But, as you can see, even the best case scenario -- someone who lives a few blocks from the mailing house (which is on the west coast) the shortest time from "Submission deadline" to "Got It!!!" is at least 9 or 9 1/2 weeks. As noted, there is at least 2 weeks difference in mailing time and you still don't have your issue, so the clock is still running. Doesn't take long before we're up to 10-12 weeks from Submission deadline to mailbox. That being said, I think you've raised a good issue and it is important for our advertisers to factor in the production/mailing time when deciding what issue to advertise in, or what marketing focus to use for any issue. When Sally did the Herald, we always assumed that the Ad would be seen one season after we submitted it and that has worked well for us. The Fjord Herald has many advertisers who take out annual contracts (THANK YOU for your support!) and most folks seem to have made the adjustment already. For instance, last year we saw a spike in Stallion/Breeding advertisements in the winter issue. I expect (hope) the same to be true this year. You might get better results from your breeding Ad if you move it up from the summer issue to the winter issue -- which would arrive in most mailboxes in early spring. As far as an on-line version, that is an issue for the BOD to take up. Our team really is interested in producing a top-quality NFHR newletter that everyone can enjoy. We welcome your feeback, (yes, even "rants") and ideas and articles (w/photos, of course). This is YOUR publication, we just pull it all together. The next deadline is Dec 1stto arrive in your mailbox by early March. Weird. I left a phone message re: our ad for the next Herald, but I will include it here, too. My question is - I created the ad using the same 3 photos I used in the last ad. Do you have those on file, and, if so, can I just send the ad indicating where the pictures go [I did this with Sally] and have you insert the pictures? Or do I need to send the full ad? There are still a couple of articles that I haven't had a chance to read and I'm looking forward to some time this evening to sit and thoroughly enjoy it from cover to cover.I get my share of people who think that fjords are just "cute, little, chubby ponies" and it's so nice to have the Herald and the NFHR website to show people pictures of fjords doing so many wonderful things. Fjord Herald - Got Photos/Digital Images?
This message is from: Starfire Farm <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Hi all, Do you have a digital image of you and your Fjord(s) doing some fun stuff? Something that you think other Fjord owners might be interested in seeing? Plearure, around home, family outing, on the trail, working on the farm/ranch, competing etc. etc. We're pulling the summer issue of the Fjord Herald together and I've got an idea rattling around in my head. Several folks have sent us photos/images recently (THANKS!) -- not associated with an article, just an interesting shot of them with their Fjords. I'd like to include these in the Herald -- but there aren't quite enough to do a spread yet, and I'd like to have some more variety in the types of photos. I'm thinking of something along the lines of a spread titled -- "What have you done with your Fjord, lately?". So, if you have a picture you'd like us to consider, send a "thumbnail" size image (a low or medium resolution image) to [EMAIL PROTECTED] As always, we will be looking for beautiful, eye-catching shots that are in focus and have clean backgrounds. Be sure to send along information about the photo (names of people, places and Fjords!) and the activity since the captions WILL be the "article" in this case. We'll look thru them and if we pick yours to be included, we'll get back with you and you can Email us the full image file (high resolution, suitable for printing). If we run out of time before we have to get this issue to press, we'll just keep working on the idea and include it in a future Herald. If you have any questions about what we're looking for, just drop an Email to the same address, [EMAIL PROTECTED] Thanks, Sandy

Fjord Herald Kudos!
This message is from: "Ursula & Brian Jensen" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> From Brian Jensen; Thankyou Sandy and Beth for your latest edition of the Herald! I feel it has again raised the standard of the quality and diversity for the Herald. I have Herald editions going back to the mid-80's and the progress shown has been steady and measured. The latest edition shows an improvement in quality of the Fjords and the overall improvement by owners, and handlers in the disciplines of Riding-Driving-Draft. This tells me that the NFHR is on track and so are its committees. There is a fair amount of Digest flack periodically from limited members who take exception to the direction and progress made by the Association and its committees of volunteers. As Pat Holland had recently mentioned in a Digest, we need ; to not forget those earlier individuals who have contributed their time and expertise in the growth of the NFHR--Committees---Fjord horse in North America. Members I wish to acknowledge are Ron and Kit Davis for their hard work and contributions. In the earlier years as a working team, they contributed much towards the breeding stock and the Evaluation Program we have today . Its these kind of folks who I look up to in the Fjord breed in North America, and hold in high esteem. If you are interested in education or clinics --attend an NFHR Evaluation or sponsor a Pre-Evaluation clinic in your area. If this is not possiblelook for an experienced Fjord person to mentor you in your growth with yourself and your Fjords. Today there are many-many qualified fjord owners and breeders who would be willing to help and assist you in your growth which contributes to the Advocacy and Stewardship of the Fjord in North America . We have the quality Fjords. We have the quality breeders and owners. We have the Professional trainers and teaching clinicians. We have the Judges and Evaluators .We have two Evaluation Record Books printed. We have a solid Fjord Association. Everything is a work in progress, and what I like about this Assoc.; is that members are willing to learn/educate, and progress. We have grown faster than any other breed in North America in education/evaluations and performance in the last 10 years. I look forward to the next 10 years with anticipation and optimism. This message is from: "Philis B. Anderson" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Thank you, Brian, for remembering Ron and Kit Davis. Yes, they did contribute much to the breed. I know because I own four horses that were produced by Davis' Valea's Lee and their various good brood mares. I think the temperaments and conformation that the Davis's bred for are self evident our homes and in the show ring. My horses are very dependable and tractable. So much is due to their good breeding. Ron and Kit did allot to promote the breed in the earlier years of the registry and at the show in Blue Earth. Fjord Herald Fall issue Summision Deadline - Sept 1st
This message is from: "starfirefarm" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Current Fjord Herald Advertisers have already heard this via an Email I sent out this morningbut to other NFHR members and Fjord Herald subscribers -- I've got good news to share. We're back on schedule!!! What does this mean? You won't have to wait another 4-6 months to get your next issue of the Herald and you better hustle to get us those articles and advertisements because the Fall issue's deadline is just a little over three weeks away! == The Fjord Herald's submission deadline for the Fall issue is S E P T E M B E R 1 , 2 0 0 5 === More good news? Starting with the Fall issue, color 1/2 page and full page Advertising space will be offered in every issue. The distribution of the Herald continues to grow and is a good advertising value. The Ad rates are listed in every issue of the Herald. For more information, to upgrade your Ad to color, or to reserve space in the next issue, contact us at [EMAIL PROTECTED] I'd like to encourage all you budding writers to try your hand at writing us about things you do with your Fjords, or events in your area. I'm sure most of you do things that would be of interest to other Fjord enthusiasts. Some of you, no doubt attended the Blue Earth show. I have the "official" class placings -- but it would be great if someone would share their personal Blue Earth experience and impressions. Was anyone there for the first time? What about the special anniversary Norwegian Wedding ceremony? Here's another idea -- an article about the Evaluation that is taking place this weekend ? Or And, if you're like me, the first thing I do when you get your copy is to flip through the entire magazine looking at all the photos. You can never have enough Fjord horse photos! I know that just about everyone has a digital camera these days -- and they take nice high resolution files...so how about sharing some of your favorite Fjord photos? The fall issue is traditionally the Baby Fjord issue. Send us photos of this year's darlings. Please include your name (or your farm name) along with the foal's name and the foal's dam and sire. Don't bother to crop or alter your images-- we can "clean" them up if needed and crop them as part of our layout process. The files do need to be high resolution (at least 300 dpi/ppi at their final print size) or a lab processed photo -- I'm sorry, but we cannot accept print from your desktop inkjet printer. As far as files go, an uncompressed JPEG file is the most common file format. TIFF formats are OK too. We prefer to get the articles (in-line text in your mail message, text file attachment or MS Word doc are all fine) and photos by Email. We have high-speed internet so big files don't bother us, but if you have a slow internet connection you may certainly post them to us on a CD or hard copy (include a S.A.S.E. if you want the photos returned). Our mailing address is: 2012 Blue Mountain Ave Berthoud, CO 80513 If you have ANY questions or ideas for articles that you'd like us to explore, please don't hesitate to contact us. That would assure more timely delivery as well as cheaper postage. I am sure that as a membership publication of the NFHR there would be little problem in qualifying. Sure, there would be a few more hoops to jump through for the Post Office, but if it was cheaper and got better delivery, why not go for it? That is being looked into right now Steve. I have applied for an ISSN for the Fjord Herald & after we get that we will apply for the periodical rate. The new mailing house we are using has a permit for the periodical rate. Not sure how long this will take but we are pursuing the possibility of mailing it 2nd class or periodical rate. This message is from: "Gail Russell" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> And, it would mean equal access to advertisements in the Herald. Years ago I knew about two grey mares in Southern CA, but my contact (who knew the owner, but did not have daily contact with them) said the owner would have to be persuaded to sell them. A few months later, they appeared for sale in the Herald, for a very good price. They were sold weeks before I received my Herald. Do you know why they are being mailed Standard (3rd) Class rather than Periodical (2nd) Class? That would assure more timely delivery as well as cheaper postage.
