Many of you know or know of Bob Mischka, a horseman turned profession

http://www.pbase.com/finnskeeper/fjord_christmas&page=1   Frodo just said no
to the red bow but Galianna was just like bring it on I love the bling :)
Seeing them in pictures for the first time in a while brought home to me that
maybe they are getting a bit rotund and it is time to put them on a bit of a
diet :)  That is not all winter hair and camera weight!   They are both doing
well otherwise and Galianna has recovered well with just some scarring on her
nose.

Merry Christmas!

The main thing you want to bear in mind in this search the the guide
number of the flash unit. You most often see the guide number
expressed in terms such as "Guide Number (GN) 120 at ISO 100". This
then relates to the distance you can get a well exposed picture at a
 given f/stop through the formula "Guide Number/distance = f/stop".
So with the flash unit above, if you were to shoot with an f/stop of
2 and ISO 100 you could get a well exposed picture at a distance of
 60 feet (120/60 = 2). Most built-in flashes have a guide number in
the range of 20 to 30 which explains why you can't count on them for
 use at any distance.

Another thing with which you need be concerned when looking for an
external flash is the trigger voltage your particular camera camera
can handle. You will probably need to check with the manufacturer's
tech support to get this number, but it is very important because if
you use a flash with too high a trigger voltage it can fry the flash
switch inside you camera making further use with flash impossible.
Most modern flashes are compatible with most modern cameras, but
since the consequences are so grave it pays to be sure.

The built-in flashes on cameras are a joke once your subject is much
more than ten feet away; not much good in a arena. Boosting the ISO
is one solution, but it comes with the drawback of additional noise
(grain) with both digital and film. When I reviewed the pictures I
shot at Winona, I was pleased with the exposure but disappointed
with the blurring from the relatively low shutter speed even with a
higher ISO. So I searched ebay until I found a good price on a
Sunpak 544, a separate hammer-head flash unit that will pump
sufficient light out up to 100 feet and more. Although I haven't yet
had a chance to try it in a situation like a large indoor arena, I
know that I used a similar flash to shoot basketball games, when I
was in the Army, with great success.

your best bet is to buy a lens with the fastest f/stop you can get. of
course that is mega bucks!!

ISO SPEED
FASTER SHUTTER
BIGGER FLASH (like Steve suggested in a later post)
Faster Lens

closer to the person being photographed
all lights on

that is really about all you can do!

Reena

Increase the film speed. Choose a faster ISO (ASA) setting in your digital
camera or buy faster film if you are using a film camera. You may need to
go to ISO 800 or even 1600. ISO 200 or 400 will be way too slow for
low-light action pictures.

Get more light into your camera by opening up the lens aperture. Do this
by setting the f-stop to a smaller number. For example, if you are using
f-11, try a setting of f-5 or lower.

Increase the lighting in the environment. Turn on all of the arena lights.
Add extra lights for a planned photo shoot. Choose a time of day when
natural sunlight is coming into the arena as much as possible. Use a
separate handheld flash.

I bet Laurie With has some even better ideas.

handsome husband:)

Lots of "banter" about my daughter marrying a married man..haha!

Larry Schultz took some photos of the "couple" with Thor (Heike's stallion)
and I cannot wait to see them. Thor was a real ham:)

One of the greastest memories I will have of the Winona show - is this:
Nathan, Pat Wolfe's nephew was sitting on Prydarson and I was right next to
him - sitting on Hostar waiting to go into the English Pleasure class - side
by side we were - and a lady pushing a baby carriage came right between and
thru us...with baby..both horses just sorta looked and
sighed..what great horses.

Pat Holland

I am not a crazy mom! (hahaha) I really wasn't paying attention and
all of a sudden someone says, "Do you know what you just did?"

Do we really expect anything less from these awsome animals? I think a
lot goes out to thier trainers and owners for the marvelous job of working
with thier animals so they are this safe to be around!

I wrote a story a while back on how I would rest out in the pasture while
pregnant (with the above baby), with our fjords. As a breed I believe they
know when they can cut loose and play with you, but also when to be gentle
and careful.

And Mr. May As for the good looking couple in the Norwegian
Wedding...I will have to play the bride from now on next to my hubby!!
hahahahhaha

Thanks for the great time at Winona everyone, we learned so much and
loved being involved with the festivites! My husband Joe and I look forward
to our fjord events!

Winona - stallions and numbers per pictures and more

2006-10-27 Thread Pat Holland

This message is from: "Pat Holland" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>

Dear List,

I finally returned home from the Winona event - physically Sunday evening
the 22nd.

Mentally I really don't know where I am. Having left directly from Winona
to take Hostar to his home with Melinda Springs in Bellevue Idaho.

First and foremost I need to thank my committee of The Stallion Review -
Rich and Nancy Hotovy, Mike and Susie Sadlon, Tyler and Dawn Schlickman, Bob
Gudknecht and my husband Gary - for their unconditional support and
outstanding horsemanship. It's the work behind the scenes that seems to go
unnoticed, manly because it was so well organized, and the stallion parade
and review went on without a flaw.

The above mentioned people many times (through out the entire event - not
just the stallion review) flew into "save" mode without recognition and
utilized their innate horse sense to prevent mishaps. These are TRUE
horsepeople and thankfully my friends. This "group" are the Blue Earth
people - the people who are always ALWAYS there for you with heart and give
of their time without glory.

I also need to apologize to all of you whom trusted me with the stallion row
event, that your presentations were not fully felt due to the poor sound
system in place Thursday evening. You could only hear the music and scripts
if you were in the barns or the bathrooms. After working on this event for
14 months I know all the work and time and effort you all put into your
final presentations, and I was greatly disappointed that those watching
could not hear what each of you wanted to convey.

OK...on to the positives:

As far as numbers on the stallions to know whom is whom. #415 is Hostar.
He received his blue in conformation and he received a great deal of
recognition by the foreign dignitaries as they were greatly impressed by his
condition and health. It was a proud moment when the Norwegian Dignitary
deemed Hostar the best stallion amounts the stallions presented in the NFHR
Evaluation. Although not "official" - considering the Mother Country
considered a Dutch stallion standing in North America the best, added a very
interesting factor to the mix.

#449 is Wood's Sven. A five year old stallion my husband and I purchased
3 months before Winona. We utilized what the NFHR Evaluation was designed
for to tell us if this boy should stay intact and he did receive his Silver
Medallion of Quality - of which both my husband and myself were very happy
with.

The star however at the event, in my humble opinion was SF ARVE, owned by
and presented by Shiloh Simino and her husband Chris.
Arve is a son of Hostar and just go look at picture #13 in the Stallion #3
section of Laurie's pictures..Shiloh drove out from New Hampshire to
present with Hostar and he is absolutely one of the BEST Fjords, with the
best owners I've ever known. Arve ended up with the Driving Championship
and was high scored NFHR conformation gelding in the evaluation. Shiloh and
Chris stayed at my place before and after the event and simply put - great -
great people, what I feel make up the general membership of the NFHR.
Honest, sincere and with a great love of their horse.

I need to thank two other people as well -Nancy Barmore and Kathy
Monroe, who allowed me to house Hostar Sunday and Monday at their farm near
Winona. Due to the ventilation problem at the Winona facility, Hostar began
bleeding out the nose Saturday afternoon due to the ammonia in the barns.
The Veterinarian confirmed this and he needed to be in fresh air, plus meds.
I was greatly concerned because he them had to travel for 3 days - Hostar
did arrive in Idaho healthy, and I am very grateful to Kathy and Nancy for
their hospitality, care and concern - not only for Hostar but to myself as
well.

Lastly I have to thank Catherine Lassesen for her great skill in
transporting Hostar, Melinda and myself to Bellevue, Idaho. Catherine is
also a great horseperson with innate sense and care and concern for our
animals. It was a privilege to spend the time I did with her and thank
you - thank you Catherine, you know where my heart was left at and I
sincerely appreciate how much of yours you gave to me.

Hostar is home now.Melinda lives in one of the most beautiful
areas in the country, with some of the best horse facilities in her area
(Debbie McDonald trains near by). He will stand shipped cooled and frozen
and I highly suggest breeding

Virginia Fjord "Fjestival" Pictures and DVD

2006-09-07 Thread MABogie
This message is from: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Genie's request for pictures of sale horses came at a timely moment. The
Fjord "Fjestival" is really an exposure event. Horses do sell as result of
being
seen at the "Fjestival" but that occurs in the weeks and months that follow.
I suppose someone could come with their trailer, but I think that is unlikely
to occur.

That being said, my better half, Tom Snyder is a good amateur photographer.
Tom will take pictures of ALL the horses at the Fjestival and shoot video of
performances. That way we can create a DVD and send it to anyone who is
interested. Mind you, it's not going to be flashy, but it should be
serviceable.
Send me an e-mail if you want a DVD and I'll get one out to you next week.
Genie is already on my list!

Now I am off to the barn for cleaning. This event is like having company for
Thanksgiving. We had great coverage in the Fauquier Times Democrat, which is
the local paper with a strong horse orientation. So we are expecting plenty
of visitors on Sunday.

Well, Bjorken, now 18, still reminds me of a little boy. I have had him
all his life and even though he is the biggest fjord I have (15-2) he is
the low ranking member of my little herd. Old Bjarne, who HAS seen it all,
rules the roost, Stella, 28, is the "Grand dam" but Adel, now 11 I think,
is the newest member..she has a dominant personality, but Stella chases her
around. Adel buddied up with "The old man", Bjarne, and can chase my
"baby" Bjorken around..He is afraid to come over to the hay, or to me,
unless Mom is there to chase Adel . Soo funny!

Somehow I think of Frodo as "the old man" because he has this old, wise look in
his eye (he is in actuallity only 17). He has been through a lot in his
lifetime (he had four owners in the previous two years before I bought him for
instance) and he just seems to be the kind of horse that has seen it all. And
I do have a mare that is still a very spry thirty-five who I call the grand dam
(not a Fjord). Frodo's registered name is Julevan and while he is not in the
database I do have his papers. He was bred by Gene Bauer and is by Gjestarson
out of Severina. My new foal is out of a mare by Gjestarson out of a full
sister to Severina. So while not full siblings, they are closely related. I
still tell Frodo he's an uncle ;)

What are his bloodlines? I couldn't find Frodo listed in either the

found a mare that is related!

Hey, I think of my 18 year old gelding, Bjorken, as "My Baby" as I raised
him from birth..Have his mom, 28 and another gelding 30, so I sure don't
think of him as old!

Hi Listers
I have put some of the pics from Southern Pines on a homepage. If any
one is interested and can access the page and run the slide show please
let me know as the last time I tried this it didn't work. The address
is: http://homepage.mac.com/rainbowend/PhotoAlbum1.html. If you receive
an error and there is homepage on the upper bar click on that to see if
it works or cut and paste address to your browser.

The ponies are going great in dressage and cones but Nanja still needs
to be more forward and braver in the more testing hazards. She is great
in the more straight forward hazards and good ol' Nordy just gets the
job done although gets somewhat fed up with Nanja sucking back when she
needs her help the most. However as a pair they are so together in
dressage that I remain confident about my two year plan to get them
winning consistently at advanced.

Mira is enjoying some time off from serious competition and is
teaching Uma the ins and outs of pair driving.

Also a note to you mare owners Marnix who is a Model/Prestatie
stallion in the Dutch studbook and who had four very successful years
competing in Combined and Pleasure driving as well as ridden dressage
is waiting for some some nice mares to breed. He has a lovely demeanor
and is loved by all who know him.

Except for some low level local events I am taking a break from
serious competition to enjoy seeing my youngest graduate from high
school and then have my knees scoped and cleaned up so I'll be in good
shape for the fall season which begins with the Laurels first weekend
of Sept.

grows. Big Bjorken (Stella X Anvil's Rikolv)is 15-2hh, has flatter feet,
which would probably be even flatter if he was not shod. He tends to have a
flatter sole, was rather tender on grevel without shoes. His hind feet,
however have a concave sole. He is shod with lightweight titanium shoes in
the summer, borium and snow rim pads in the winter so I can ride.Old
Bjarne has a good shape to his foot with a concave sole. I will take
picture when it is warmer and the snow is out of their feet.

My farrier does NOT take out much if any sole, especially on the barefoot
fjords, just the dead sole that is shedding. So their hooves will have
little "cup" in the sole when freshly trimmed, but as they grow out will
develope more concavity.

I don't recall our Fjord being flat... well, not flat like all the other
draft horses I know. But I do know she was a little different from our Arab and
Paints. My husband does all our trimming but not shoes, I do remember both he
and the farrier commenting she was a little different and thinking the prior
owners didn't have a farrier doing her properly. Perhaps that is just the way
they all are? They took a little more sole off each time they trimmed her and
she didn't ever get sore or anything. So not sure if it matters one way or the
other. Don't have her anymore or I'd send pictures...

Oh yes.I totally agree. When I say slowly, We've had Lola for two
years, she is still always on the 'other' side of the fence from our dogs. I
would never think of letting the dogs in the pasture with her...She is
amazing, smart, social and willing to do fun and odd things, like following me

2004-06-16 Thread Karen McCarthy
This message is from: "Karen McCarthy" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>

Hi folks,

Here is a link for anyone who is interested in what the Hayfork, Ca. CDE
was like...Besides amazing scenery, there were some pretty cool horses
entered! Red mules, Canadiens, Friesans, Welsh & more Welsh, Haffies and
several warmblood breeds. There was even a BLM mustang, who looked like a
black Percheron who accidentally made it into the dryer & shrunk...very,
very cute and 'typey'. You can view our photos in the Training Pony Pair
section - also check out Pat & Dave Shumaker's Arnie pics in the Training
Sgl. Pony division. He looks awesome! Frannie did a heck of a job driving
him, really wowed a couple of the judges. Arnie is a Sven son out of a
Gromar daughter. Quite a solid mover. Pat & Dave own the Trinity Driving
Center where the event is held.

It was my first "real"  outing (ADS rec'g CDE) with my "girls", a  pair
of homebred mares, Sven daughters Idelle & Alycia. Relax Brian, we're no
threat yet in the Dressage Dept. yet, (57% 3 judge average) but we're are
solid everywhere else, and getting better, doing our homework while the
carriage is off for repairs, driving single & working under saddle. I
have my Riffel wagonette in at Kurt Barne's in nearby Fallon for repairs
before our next CDE in Aug.  Replacing some warped wood panels,
tightening the wheel bolts, a crab for the pole and BRAKES! New, flexible
line ones...like Jerry Friz (THank You!) and his friend Gary suggested I
install. No more konking out in the 1st part of a hilly marathon and
going brakeless for me! Also, I was kinda thinking of re-powder coating
the metal work black, but now I don't think so. In viewing the pics, that
funky plum maroon is growing on me! If there are any turnout fashionistas
out there who care to comment, what do ya'll think of a red jacket w/ the
maroon paint on the vehicle? I like it, but maybe I am getting slightly
odd as I creep onwards in age ;-|) Maybe the Red Hat Society is
next?! Anyone remember the Rajaneeshies?? That's what my sister said I
should explain to the next presentation judge...

Anyway, have fun looking - it's free, no video to buy :-))  I am going to
order a couple of pics from Christie as presents for my sis who was my
most excellent groom this time out. Poor Cinny, I need to make it up to
her, as when she tried talking to me as I drove the pair down the center
line at the start of our dressage test, (asking me if she should salute
the judge too)  I had to utter a panicked "shut-up" to her in my best
ventreroiquist (sp) voice. Oh my!

Hello

I read some of the article on foundered horses & treatment, the one on a site
that one of you recommended.

I am looking into Magnesium for Bonnie. I guess it will help with her cresty
neck AND encourage circulation in her feet? Is that right?

Also. I went out last nite and got pictures of her hooves. Close ups from 3
angles (should have gotten the heels, but didn't. If you want, I will get them
too)(thank goodness for digital cameras). Also, a close up of each front sole.

The soles look bad in my opinion. But I am very used to looking at a normal
unfoundered horse hoof. So maybe what I see is normal for founder? I'd like to
know what you all think.

I'd like to keep her barefoot. I don't like the tought of shoes. But I am
interested in a horse boot. Not anything real expensive tho. Just for riding
occasionally on the road, when Bonnie is sound. No telling how long that will
be.

Thanks,

don't think I was putting down retirees or 80 year olds.

I retired a year ago and this was my first one-month vacation ever. My
vision of my retirement planned adventure was to go...go...go!

At the Crazy Horse Resort this vision wasn't happening. Everyone just sat
in their fold-away chairs in front of the motor homes and just sat there for
weeks. Maybe that was their planned adventure. We had rented a site for a
month but left at the end of the second week. The web page on Lake Havasu
was very deceiving. Once we traveled to Quartzsite things were buzzing. I
guess what I am saying is, "Life is to short (to me) just to sit around".

I hope I did not offend anyone that was not my intent.

welcoming for year round Fjord ownership.

When I took Tank to the AZ CDE there a couple of years ago, a woman who used to
own Fjords told me she had to sell them because they just did not thrive.A
friend from here in Las Cruces who moved to Tucson with her two Fjords had one
die and gave the other to Sue in Albuquerque because she was concerned for he
mare.

OTH, here in New Mexico Fjords seem to do well. Not so hot.

We've been putting calendars together as special orders for a couple
years now, using our watercolors. I did a couple with all Fjord
pictures and others of just driving horses or just draft horses. They
are home-made, 8 1/2 X 11 but are on heavy paper with a nice spiral
binding and sold last year for $7 plus s&h. We decided against the
photo calendars because we were always unsure if the pictures sent to us
were copyrighted. If you do the calendar with photos, make sure you get
a release from the photographer.

I tried to put together a Fjord calendar last year and found out how many
ways you can be sued. So, be careful.

I truly think a Fjord horse calendar is defiantly in demand.

Good luck!

  Hello to All,

I just got home from a great vacation in Arizona...warm! Our trip started
out
at Lake Havasu. We walked across the "London Bridge", sat in the sun on
the
beach and after 3 weeks became extremely bored. We stayed at the Crazy
Horse
Campgrounds. There was Bingo on Tuesday and Thursday night, jam session on
Monday night, line dancing on Wednesday afternoon, hot tubs and heated
pools,
now come to think of it I wasn't bored just not excited. Oh ya, did I tell
you everyone there was retired and in there 80's.

Ok - what I am getting to is this..

We left Lake Havasu and zoomed over to Quartzsite, Arizona. The largest
outdoor sale in the US. Have you ever been there? HUGH! Horse stuff
unbelievable, old time horse buggies, some in need or repair and some in
beautiful condition, lots of wrought iron, but not one, NOT ONE Norwegian
Fjord horse anything. WHY? I searched to find a T-shirt or calendar with
the
Fjord horse on it. Horse calendars everywhere, no Fjords horses included,
now
that is not right. I wonder why the calendar creators and publishers pass
the
  Fjord horse by?

  Does this bother anyone else?

Maybe because Norwegian Fjords aren't in our historical tradition? But you
can find at least one picture with Fjords in the Mischka Farms Driving
Horse calendars every year! And sometimes I see them in the common "horse"
calendars!

Hey Sher,

Try "Norse" "clothing" and whatever century you're after (example: "10th
century") on someplace like ask Jeeves or Google. The only picutres I'm aware
of are in books, I can suggest a good title if you like, but I haven't gone

problem is, I don't know how to phrase it! :-)

Hi Peg,
I looked at your page: "Yenna, the sole yellow dun filly in the US". Hey,
maybe my Anvil's Adel isn't officially designated a yelow yet or registered
with the NFHR, but I bet that when I do register her, Mike may will call
her a "yellow" just as he did her full brother Anvil's Saloman. Just
thought I'd mention that..and that yes, Alaska IS in the US! LOL Here's
pictures of Adel on my Picturetrail album.

click on pictures of Adel. Adel is also in the picture in the NFHR Gallery,
"Fjords at play", "Smooching in the Alaskan snow."

I can't wait to see what Yenna looks like all shed out!

Hey y'all - we finally got out web site revised. New stuff on every page but
the "About Fjords" one. Of course the text is full of outrageous brags -
surprise, surprise - ya gotta love 'em. You can even see our "Babbling
Brook," with is more like a raging torrent right now.

Don't be startled by the skinny little picture of Yazhou, the Erlend colt
born in Australia, after all, he was just standing for the first time. I
await more pics from Heidi Murphy. There's only a head shot of Kari. She
refused to pose because she is too preggers.

Also only a head shot of Yenna, I'll just have to get after that Darryl!
Can't wait to see her when the Baileys deliver her in late Feb.

Hope you like the changes. And all you Easterners stay bundled up! Peg
