NewerTech pismo battery
Hi all, I posted recently asking opinions of replacement batteries, and had a couple of mails offlist asking me to report back on the outcome. I went for the NewerTech 7200mAh battery (about $160 from OWC). I gave it a (very unscientific) test yesterday; after calibrating as recommended, it lasted about 4 hours. This was with the screen at one notch under maximum brightness (it's over 4 years old now - needs all the help it can get :), and with AirPort running. Obviously if I was running on battery normally I'd be dimming the screen, which would make a big difference. I must admit it doesn't seem that different from the life of the original battery when new, but nostalgia could be getting the better of me. One nice surprise was the speed of delivery: ordered from the UK Friday lunchtime (local time), arrived Monday lunchtime :-) TimH -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Re: Applecare, how long should it take?
Hi all, CouId not agree more with the last poster... I feel like commenting on some things. I apologize for being long winded. I really can`t seem to be able to write short in English, I am trying though! :) Several has called sharing some negative experience with Apple, Bashing Apple. I myself wrote here a little while ago, about a bad experience with Apple (when I called them to buy a new keyboard). Right then and there I was real disappointed and frustrated with the lack of service as well as the downright incorrect information I was given by the Apple Rep. Before I said Good Bye to her, I also politely told her what I thought about the service she gave (didn`t give) me, because I really believe in giving appropriate feedback. I then did what I had to do, went to another company that were happy to sell me what I needed. When I get to it, I will also send Apple Norway a written feedback, as I really thought it was quite serious, this lady could have caused me a great financial loss, had I believed her. Even if I did post about a negative experience with Apple, I really do not think it has anything to do with bashing. What I experienced, was about one person, one Apple Rep. only, not about Apple as a whole. I just find it pretty natural to share any experience and frustration with people that most likely will understand and who can also offer insight on the subject. In the given situation, had I got the keyboard, and maybe even got a nice surprise with them pulling one from a dead iBook for me, I would for sure have posted about that too. And I really think the atmosphere on such a list should be wide enough, so that there is room for sharing joy, asking for help in solving a problem, sharing how you were able to fix something as well as venting frustration you are experiencing, even if that means that you are quite cross with Apple or the Apple Rep. you met at a store, repair facility or on the phone. We should be able to discuss all experiences, good or bad, in a nice way. And instead of assuming e.g. that the poster must have acted like a jerk, we could ask a few questions... What good customer service really means, is also something that there will probably be about as many views on, as there are people on this list (and then some). What is fair to expect, is probably not an issue it would be easy to get everybody to agree on. It really should not matter much though, we should be able to show each other respect anyway - sometimes the only possible answer is to agree to disagree... And to this specific discussion; I have no problems understanding the views of both sides here... But I must say, I think the discussion got ugly, there should really be no need to resort to things like name calling (or for that matter, anything close to it). Even if we disagree, we should be able to keep a polite tone and be respectful (just as we should when approaching AppleCare personnel or any other service we are in need of). I have loved every minute of being a Mac user (OK, _almost_ every minute), have done so since I got my PowerBook 170, around January 1992. One thing is for sure, Apple would have to treat me darn bad to get me to consider switching to a PC. To me PC`s (including my real neat, for a PC that is, Toshiba Portege), are a necessity, something I have to live with because of work. Macs aren`t an option there. I love using my Mac, it is FUN to use. No PC`s to this date has been FUN, I think, except for way back when, when I thought it was fun to poke around in DOS... Bottom line... I think we all have one thing in common. We love using Mac`s. That is why we are here in the first place, right? LOL... Some might be here because they are so desperate for help in dealing with their darn Mac ;), but I really think most of us are here to lurk, share, learn etc. - in good old Mac User Group Tradition with a friendly atmosphere. Am I right??? :) I have AppleCare for the iBook. I consider calling them real soon, to talk to them about my track pad problem. I have real difficulties believing that all iBooks are that bad, without Apple having to do something about it. I think people would have real problems using their iBook if that was the case with all of them... Aase :) Can we turn the page now? While not all my AppleCare experiences have been rosy, they are consistently ranked among the best personal computer companies in terms of both reliability and support. Individual experiences may vary, of course. Lately I have found their support much improved from 5 years ago. BTW, I much prefer system upgrade downloads, but then I have access to a T1 line -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Newbie OSX Volume Q
Hi all, I have noticed one thing while installing some trial versions of software etc. on my iBook with OS X. When I have installed, a Volume appears on the desktop. That is something I have never seen before, and I wonder what it is really about. I tried trashing one, and as far as I could see, it did not cause me any problems. As far as I understand, e.g. the HD is a volume. But what is the reason for software making volume icons appear on the desktop? What functions do these have, is there any reason to keep them etc. I did read a bit in Mac Help, but it didn`t really make me understand much more. So I am hoping for some input on the subject... Pismo display removal issue
Hi all: I need to replace the AC/power board on my Pismo, a very hairy operation in which one basically has to remove every single thing that can be removed from the computer in order to get at the old board and put in the new one. In the process of attempting this delicate operation, I discovered that my display is not easily removable. The display has two tabs that slide into a sort of bracket-hinge thingie (anyone who's performed a display removal operation knows what I'm talking about, I hope). While the tab on the right side slides in and out of the corresponding bracket-hinge quite easily, the one on the left side does not. It seems to catch on the lip of the bracket-hinge. I've tried sliding it back and forth, and pressing the tab to one or the other of the bracket when pulling up, but nothing works. Does anybody have any advice about how to get it out? Is there some sort of trick that's not in the Pismo Take-Apart Manual? (FYI: PowerBook Medic makes this manual, of which I have a copy.) Or am I stuck with trying to jam a screwdriver into the bracket with one hand and pulling up the display with the other? TIA. Re: Lombard 9.1 disaster
Hi Laurent, With your post, you reminded me of something I have been wondering about lately. Sometimes my Pismo suddenly starts making a lot of noise while it works (and I am not meaning the fan). Can a HDD start making odd noises if it is about to wear out? My boss just lend me a 250 GB external LaCie (porsche case) USB HDD, so I can back up what I want to keep on the iBook and re-install the rest. He offered me to buy it from him, but it is a bit embarrassing since I found out that I can get it new a bit cheaper than what he asks for the used one (he asks for $254), on eBay I can get it at $179 (BIN). Silly me said I was real interested before checking on the web... Oh well, I guess I learned a lesson... Anyway, back to the point... I know I should take a back-up of the Pismo anyway, but could the noises give me an indication that I better do it quick, or I could be in big trouble? I have a lot of important stuff on it... I am planning on taking it in for a check-up etc. when I am done setting up this one, and also have got to transferring data that I have to have available on this one too. If I should decide to back-up both computers on the external HDD, and also probably use it for stuff I don`t have enough space for on this one - do I then need to divide it into several partitions and such? For the Pismo, I was then thinking of copying the whole thing, system and everything. I never ever set up a HDD myself though, I always had my support person set it up before I got it - and for 13 years, I never had the need to re-install the system (knock on wood!). And if I had any kind of problem, I have always had a special support system for all the PB`s (nothing to do with Apple), still has it for the Pismo, even if it is not entirely the same anymore, since most people who use them, now have PC`s. I am one of a very few that still uses a Mac (how sad!). Anyway, the Pismo now needs to go in anyway, to get the clock battery and ordinary battery replaced. If I take it in for that, I could probably ask them to send it to the repair facility for a full check-up, including the HDD, and they could then decide what is best to do with it to make sure it is in good shape, as I will still use it some and if I get a problem with the other one, I need to know that I have another to turn to. I hope that you or others can give me some advice, so that I don`t end up with a crisis with it... Aase :) Laurent wrote: Well, if you were able to reformat the drive and it's working, try to keep it going for a little while and you'll see. I'm not the definitive expert on the question, but when you start hearing clicking noises from the hard drive, that usually means it is close to its useful life. Make sure you make daily backups of your important files. -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... I used to use Web Devil a lot back when I paid a lot to stay on line, and I really loved it. It is so easy to use and works real well. I accidently deleted it during a quick and rough tidy-up on my HDD a couple of years ago though, and never got to getting it again... If you like to keep listings of things you buy on eBay now and then, Web Devil is a super option for that... Too bad eBay can`t archive listings for longer... Maybe I should get Web Devil again too, because I would like to keep listings, in order to be able to go back, also after 3 months... These are disk images...not harmful at all. When you are done with it just eject it and it's gone! Also you can delete the original file that you downloaded, or you can keep it in storage somewhere in case you need to re-install some time later. Then just double click it and it'll make that same disk image again. So, no, there is no reason to keep them, they're just so you can install the software from a compressed file. Then just double click it and it'll make that same disk image again. So, no, there is no reason to keep them, they're just so you can install the software from a compressed file. Re: NewerTech pismo battery
I get around 3 hours out of mine. Maybe you didn't allow it to charge long enough, as the first charge needs at least 24 hours to get a full charge, at least that was my experience. On 1/27/05 5:01 AM, Tim Hodgson [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Hi all, I posted recently asking opinions of replacement batteries, and had a couple of mails offlist asking me to report back on the outcome. Re: Lombard 9.1 disaster
Hi Laurent, Thanks a lot! That is real useful advice!!! The external is a 250 GB USB drive. The Pismo still has the original 6 GB HDD. Since I never looked into it, I never even had an idea partitioning like that would make reformatting, erasing etc. on the rest of the HDD possible... That sounds perfect! I think I better do that, and then a complete back up of the Pismo, before even thinking of starting doing the iBook. Saving 13 years worth of files, is more important. Actually, I think I have even more on it, I even kept some files from the PC I had before my first Mac. It is so great to be able to go back and find files. It feels real odd that I am well on my way to filling up this new iBook already, with it`s 60 GB HDD. And I have never before had any HDD bigger than the 6 GB... Things sure change... I hope it won`t take ages doing back-up to the USB harddisk... I guess I will soon find out how long it takes. I have an ORB here too that I used earlier for back-up, but as it was real slow, I ended out only taking back-up of the most important things. So in order to really utilize back-ups properly, it has to be easy and not too time-consuming, I think... If you want to backup your Pismo internal drive, and if you have only one partition on that drive, then there is no need to partition the external drive. Or, if the external drive is much larger than the Pismo internal drive, you could always create a partition on the external one that would be slightly larger than the internal one and use it to backup up the internal. The remaining space could be used as another partition that you could reformat, erase, etc., without any impact on the first backup partition. -Laurent. -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Hi Laurent, I was talking about the harddisk-looking icon that pops up on the desktop after installing some software. When I hit Command+I on it, it says that it is a Volume. Hi Tom, I think you may have missed my para 2: it lasted about 4 hours ;-) I'm not at all unhappy with the performance; I suppose I just hoped that it'd be even better. I did only charge for around 12 hours, as recommended by Newer; maybe I'll try charging it longer next time I run it right down, just in case it improves things. Re: hard drive options
For what its worth, I have the 5400RPM 80GB TravelStar in my 12 G4, and the 5400RPM 80GB Samsung in my Pismo. Both drives are nearly silent (no advantage for either) and both seemed to give its respective home a similar speed boost over the 4200rpm drive it replaced. Samsung drives aren't so common in the US, but they are in pretty much every laptop sold in Korea, without any issues or complaints that I'm aware of (my family is in Korea). I wouldn't hesitate to buy anohter Samsung drive, though if the price difference is only $10 or $20, I'd still spring for the TravelStar, just because of past experience with them. Re: web page capture
That's easy? I guess in the world of MS (no offence, Stanton). That's why I like Safari. As per the first response: save as pdf Frank, it looked complicated in one paragraph. Here are Stanton's steps in his own words, broken down by me into a list: ... view... the web page (including links) you wish to archive, under the File menu, pull down to Save As. The resultant Save dialog box, has an option box near the bottom on the left side called Format. Select the first option, Web Archive, then click the Options button just to its right. A follow-on popup dialog called Site Download Options will appear. Select your options, including which links and images to archive, and how many layers deep, then click OK, which closes the popup, and then click Save in the main Save dialog box. Internet Explorer should do the rest. O.K., everybody - I have another question now. I did these steps. The result was what appeared to be Internet Explorer opening up the website, which was good. However, when I clicked the photo thumbnails, the resulting screen told me, Vehicle not found in database. My questions is, do you think that when I click the URL to this auction (which occurred three months ago), that I am bringing up something that is in my computer (cookies??) and not actually on ebay anymore? The auction was at http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll? ViewItemcategory=39409item=2493451104rd=1 Do you guys get an auction complete with all the vehicle info, a nice huge photo about a fourth of the way down with six thumbnails underneath it, then a square of 25 more thumbnails below that, followed by lots more vehicle info? iBook 700 MHz G3, Screen Spanning Dr. and PowerPoint 2004
I've spent a couple of days trying to get a dual screen presentation running using PowerPoint 2004 on an company owned iBook 700MHz G3 using the current version of Screen Spanning Dr. (0.32?) and an LCD projector. 99% of the time, the second screen works exactly as expected. So far, it is only when I set up the show for presentation on the second screen, and enter slide show mode, that I have any problem. Of course, this is about the only thing I need to do. It seems that the second screen is cut in half horizontally, and the bottom half is shown above the top half. I have tried many different combinations of screen resolutions and scan rates, as well as manually adjusting the projector. Thanks in advance for any suggestions. -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Re: hard drive options
FYI: zipzoomfly.com seems to have the least expensive hard drives anywhere. swapping the hd yourself is fairly straightforward as well. Depending on the speed you're looking for, you could go for well under 150. iBook - Live to tell the story...
I have just dismantled my new (to me) iBook 500MHz rev2 and put it all back together again... ...and not a single screw left over!!! HOWEVER, it still doesn't work. :o( I bought it knowing that it doesn't work of the mains, only off the battery. When I plug in the power adapter the iBook dies, and if I try to start up from the mains only (no battery fitted), it makes some faint noises, but nothing else... The LED on the adapter plug goes to green when plugged into the iBook. It was orange when I had it plugged in to the removed DC board. Any suggestions ? Apple 15 LCD display
I recently came into an Apple 15 Studio Display (the LCD model with DVI and two USB ports on the back) and it has an odd problem with one of the USB ports. When I first plugged it in, I got an error when my computer booted up A USB port is drawing too much current, it has been turned off. I was pissed, thinking something was wrong with the hub in the display, but it turns out only ONE of the two ports is bad. The monitor works just fine. Other than looking for the obvious (an obvious short somewhere in the system, bent wires, a munged connector, etc) anyone have more detailed knowledge of the USB circuitry in this beast? Anyone with some tips about opening it up to look? Fortunately the case is pretty translucent; having 'x-ray' vision is really useful for figuring out how to get into it. -- Bruce Johnson University of Arizona College of Pha macy Information Technology Group Institutions do not have opinions, merely customs -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Wallstreet start up
What would keep a WS from starting up with a fully charged battery? The battery indicates that it is fully charged. The computer starts up just fine with the adaptor connected. When the computer is on the indicator says that the battery is fully charged. I have started the computer with the battery only before. The PMU has been replaced; I know it works cause before I replaced it this battery that I have was discharged. The charging unit (or whatever it's called) is also new to the computer. How old is the battery? If you start the computer up, then pull the power cable out, does it stay on? Sometimes old batteries get confused about their charge status, and say they're full when they are in fact holding no charge at all. TIA. Carl -- Are you talking about the entire display/upper housing assembly? Meaning the tabs are the aluminum parts of the hinges. If so, it should just pull out. I would suspect a burr on the hole edge, and some working of it would set things free. There isn't a screw or anything that holds things together in that area. --- JSH TiBook Sports serve society by providing vivid examples of excellence. (George F. Finally got around to ordering my wife's birthday present tonight. A brand new 12 G4 ibook and an extra 512MB of RAM to take it to 768MB. This will be a replacement for the Pismo that she's had for the last two or so years. The Pismo still works well, but she wanted something smaller, as well as something that could play DVDs under OS X. Hoping that the iBook will be as good to her as my PowerBook has been to me so far. Re: Battery Solution
In my Lombard I found that restarting in 9.2.2 (instead of os x which I run) and running Apple's Battery Reset utility for system 9. It worked on a new battery that lasted several cycles and then read 0%. Back to 100%. Problem reoccurs occasionally, however. Irwin Jankovic -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Re: what is wrong with this PB ????
Hi David, Thanks for the info on the ipod. I was aware it had a hard drive but just didn't think of it when I was trying to back my stuff up. It still has about 16 gigs left on it so I'll give it a try tonight and see how it goes. Thanks !! Amber On 1/26/05 5:46 AM, [EMAIL PROTECTED] [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Amber - I saw a reply to your reply - but I didn't see your reply to meclear as mud right? Your iPod is really an external hard drive with software that lets it do a little extra. Plug it in and treat it like any other external. I have a 1st generation iPod that I use only for carrying important files - it beats carrying around 10 CDs or a big external drive and power supply. The important thing is to back up your data - since you are erasing the hard drive I don't recommend updating applications. The only exception would be applications for which you don't have disks - things you've downloaded. Even then, if you have access to broadband, it would be best to do a clean install of them too. Remember, applications that have an installer often have files put in places other than their own folder. Good luck david -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Umm, Pismo can play DVDs under OSX very well, even the slower 400MHz model does a terrific job, with no stutters or other usual DVD problems.
