Re: iLife and G3 upgrade for WS
I've installed Panther on my WS II 233 via XPF and it's working fine; currently running Sonnet's G3/500 upgrade with plans to go G4. All of Wegener's Wallstreet upgrades support OS X, and the G3/400 is hard to resist at a cost of $99 + shipping. I'm a firm believer in using a G4 for OS X whenever possible, so I'm holding out until I can scrape together the funds for the Presto! G4/500 -- hoping to bust a move within two weeks. Dont forget Daystar also does the CPU upgrades for Wallstreets. Its not on thier webpages, but they will do it if you ask. The prices were competitive with Wegener (not that I have anything against Wegener). Mad Dog -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... WallStreet G3 233 PowerBook
I have found a; 14 Powerbook - G3 233 Wallstreet I suspect the model is the CHEAP-O Cacheless model The person selling it wants $100 USD which appears in line with E-Bay prices. The nice thing is I don't have to pay shipping. The battery is messed up and I have to test the CD-ROM drive. It has a powersupply, clear display and is in good overall condition. Anything I should watch out for? Re: ?: iBook G3 500 has10.3.9: Is HD wipeout needed to install OS 9.2.2 / 10.3.9?
Hi, Malcolm! I just attempted to install (add) OS 9.2.1, starting up from the 9.2.1 disk which comes as part of the install set of OS X 10.2. When I get to the screen which asks to choose a disk to install the OS on, the iBook's HD is not selectable. The message is: This version of Mac OS 9.2.1 may not be installed over the system software on the currently selected volume. Press the Options. . . button to perform a clean installation. When I press the Options. . . button, I'm told: Perform Clean Installation. Installs a completely new System Jolder that does not include your third-party extensions, control panels, or fornts. System software and application preferences are reset to their original settings. Malcolm, this message gives me NO indication of whether this installation will wipe out the installed version of OS X 10.3.8. What do you recommend I do here? Not sure how to test this, though, but I thought that, in any case, you can install 9 after installing X. Full screen movie in QuickTime (was Re: AVI files)
And if you want to play the avi files full screen in QuickTime (not the pro= version), you can do it with an AppleScript. Here's the code to run it on= your PowerBook display (1) or a second non-mirrored display (2). Open the= movie before you run the script from the Scripts menu. display dialog Which display do you want to show the QuickTime movie on?= buttons {1, 2} default button 1 set dispNo to ((button returned of result) as number) tell application QuickTime Player activate --rewind movie 1 -- uncomment if you want to rewind before starting =ABevent MVWRenfs=BB =ABclass devi=BB dispNo play movie 1 repeat while (the playing of movie 1 is true) delay 5 end repeat =ABevent MVWRexfs=BB =ABclass devi=BB 1 rewind movie 1 end tell A much simpler script does the trick (at least if you don't have more than one screen): tell application QuickTime Player present movie 1 end tell This is what I have in my Scripts menu. To install, do the following (in Tiger): go to Applications-AppleScript and: 1) open the AppleScript Utility Make sure the checkbox Show script menu in menu bar is selected. 2) Open Script Editor and paste or write the code for the script. Save as compiled script with a descriptive name (e.g. Full Screen) in ~/Library/Scripts (create the folder it does not already exist). Re: art teacher mac tools
The TV output on a Mac PowerBook is a round multi-pin connector for S-video. If your TV has an S-video input, you can get an S-video to S-video cable and you are in business. If your TV only has separate video and sound input connectors, you need a cable with a converter. Twice this week my WS (upgraded to G4/500, running OS 9.1) has refused to wake up from Sleep. Of course you'll want a bigger HD also but ince the transfer rate is slow I wouldn't recommend paying extra for a 7200, the 4200/5400 would be fine. Also be careful of ATA6 HD's as they appear to not work in these old PB models. Another consideration would be the video memory. Since it is a 14'' it mot likely has 4MB's but there is the possibility it is only 2. The tell-tale sign is if it has S-Video or not. If it has S-Video it is 4MB if not it is only 2. If you are interested I have some WSII mobo's but no CPU's if you would like to find or buy that upgrade and go that route. I got mine extremely cheap and I fairly impressed with the little guy but it is very slow and old. It's worth it to m e to upgrade it since my initial cost was so low, but if I were buying one off eBay I'd save my money and go for an iBook snow or a faster PB, say a G3 400 or better. OS X will run a lot better and the upgrade path seems to be longer. -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... I wish it did have a System Folder. A search of the drive found zero items with or containing that name. This message gives me NO indication of whether this installation will wipe out the installed version of OS X 10.3.8. What do you recommend I do here? Just a shot in the dark but maybe the OS 9 driver wasn't installed when the disk was originally erased. Not sure how to test this, though, but I thought that, in any case, you can install 9 after installing X. If the driver is really missing, that would mean starting over, erasing, installing 9, then 10. It may take a while but this WILL search the entire hard drive. Actually it'll search all mounted volumes, so kick out your OS 9 CD first. No. OS 9 and OS X are independent and different things. Do NOT screw around with the various oddly named files and folders you see in OS 9, or you WILL mess up OS X, but the installers don't even notice the other system. Very likely it will set the startup system folder to the OS 9 one, but you can change that with the startup disk control panel. The issue is, the only way you get that error message is if there IS a newer version of OS 9 on the system somewhere. I'd just go for a clean install and go from there. These drives will not auto negotiate, but the WSs don't care in this case. It is the Lombard and Pismo which cannot use ATA-6 HDs which will not auto negotiate. For Lombards and Pismos, I use Hitachi/IBM 5K80 60 GB drives, which are ATA-6 but which will also properly auto negotiate. All Samsungs and most newer Hitachi/IBM and Toshiba drives will not auto negotiate. Hitachi/IBM 5K80 drives are getting hard to come by. In the 60 GB capacity, which is right at the sweet spot price/GB-wise, Newegg.com is selling these for about $90 while BestBargainPC.com is selling these for about $83, but BestBargainPC.com may substitute a later Hitachi/IBM model if the 5K80s are temporarily out of stock. OWC's 2.5 disk drive catalog lists the specific drives which it sells which will and will not work with particular PowerBooks. As OWC doesn't sell Samsung (Newegg.com does) OWC doesn't state the fact that Samsung WILL work with WS I and II, but WILL NOT work with Lombard and Pismo. -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... USB 2.0 on an iBook G3 600?
Hello all, My roommate and I are going to be getting 4 Gig iPod Nano's soon. I have a Pismo, so I'll be getting a PC card adapter that will give my Pismo USB 2.0. As the new Nano doesn't have Firewire, using 1.1 with the 4 gig model would be so slow it might be unpractical. But that's a simple solution for the Pismo. What can my roommate do with his iBook? Problem with G3 Starting from DW CD
Have downloaded the latest update to DW and a created a new CD with that version: 3.0.3. It will start my G5 iMac running 10.4.2 and repair it just fine. However, when I try to start my G3 Dual-USB iBook with this same CD, it will not work. I can hear the CD drive grinding away, but no luck. After restarting the G3, I went to System Preferences Startup Disk, with the DW 3.0.3 CD in the drive and waited and waited while the gearwheel in the Startup Disk window spun and spun then stopped without identifying the DW CD as an option. The G3 CD drive _does_ work because when I insert the DW CD, it appears on the desktop...so that's not the problem. So, I connected the G3 to the G5 with a FireWire cable, started the G3 in Target Disk Mode, launched DW 3.0.3, which I had installed on the G5, choose the G3 and successfully ran DW. Any idea why I cannot start the G3 from the DW 3.0.3 CD? How does one check to be sure one's CD drive isn't going flaky??? Many thanks, bob -- -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Hi There Mike, I have a 12 233 PDQ Wallstreet. It runs OSX Ok for me. At the moment it is 10.2.8 as to use 10.3 or higher needs xpostfacto. Before I installed 10 I fitted a 5400 rpm seagate 40 Gb HD and ram up 512 Mb. I at first installed 10.1 then upgraded it to 10.1.5 I then found a good price for a Wallstreet 300 Mhz CPU and installed this with out any problems. I then installed 10.2 and its upgrades to 10.2.8 As I mentioned at first its OK for me but I do not use speed eating programmes. Re: WallStreet G3 233 PowerBook
I have found a; 14 Powerbook - G3 233 Wallstreet I suspect the model is the CHEAP-O Cacheless model Anything I should watch out for? I am typing this on a 233MHz/512KB cache model with a 14'' screen. I am pretty sure that the 14'' models did not come on the 233MHz cacheless. Actually the first Wallstreets had three different display size choices - 12.1, 13.3 and 14.1; IIRC the 12.1 was stock on the 233 MHz Mainstreet model but the other screen sizes were BTO options. The Series II PDQ models had 14.1 displays standard, with 12.1 available as a cost-saver. So the display size isn't a reliable indicator of which Series WS you have. I'd check the info plate on the bottom of the 'Book. My Series II reads: 14.1TFT/233MHz-512K/32MB/2GB HD/4MB video/CD/Modem; I've heard the Mainstreets don't have this info on the bottom. Although it seems nothing in Apple i cheap I found this upgrade reasonable. http://www.wegenermedia.com/wllst400.htm Its a G3 400MHz/1MB cache CPU. Supports 512MB of RAM also. Should be nice for running OS X. I had a Lombard before and I can tell you OS 10.2 ran dog low on that, with 382MB RAM. So I will not even attempt OSX on this little 233 right now. If you have a cacheless Mainstreet, forget OS X. 10.2 Jaguar is almost tolerable on the 266 PDQ. If you do have a Series I mobo you might try OS X with the 292 MHz CPU; could serve you well enough, at least for now. Another consideration would be the video memory. Since it is a 14'' it most likely has 4MB's but there is the possibility it is only 2. The tell-tale sign is if it has S-Video or not. If it has S-Video it is 4MB if not it is only 2. Right. IIRC only the cacheless Mainstreet lacked S-Video output. Gene Osburn Friends don't let friends do Windows ebay ID: mac4gman Zip 99204 -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and...
