There may be differences due to the definition of a gigabyte
(i.e. 134217728 bits vs. 12500 bits) where manufacturers
prefer to choose the smaller conversion to get a bigger GB.
Then there's the fact that a certain percentage of any media
will be reserved by the filesystem format. This is true with
hard drives, blank CD-Rs, blank CD-RWs, blank DVD-Rs, blank
DVD-RWs, flash drives, etc. These differences exist on all
platforms; it's not a Mac-only issue.

AFAIK, there is no cache card, though it does have an L2 cache.
You might try reseating the RAM modules and the CPU daughter card.

Two different issues.

For DVD playback, Lombard's 400 MHz G3 might be a bit slow for
a software DVD player. But I think the main culprit may be the
video card bus: there might not be enough headroom to push the
amount of decoded DVD data from the CPU to the video card.

For Flurry et.al., they all use OpenGL which can be very slow
unless your video card has hardware acceleration support for it.
Since hardware-accelerated OpenGL support was never included for
Lombard, anything OpenGL will run like a dog.

Re: Adding RAM to G3 (Lombard 333) --Go for broke, or more conservative?

GURU is wrong. 512 MB max, 256 MB upper and 256 MB lower. In fact,
I've not heard of *any* report of a Lombard with over 512 MB RAM. I
could be wrong. And in this case, I'd love to be proven wrong! :-)
But I strongly doubt it. :-/

: Also, the

GURU is wrong. Lombard/Wallstreet uses an older memory controller that
does not recognize stacked memory modules. So a RAM module that works
fine in Pismo and other Macs may not work correctly in Lombard (although
RAM that works fine in Lombard/Wallstreet will probably work fine in
Pismo et.al.). Whatever you buy, make sure the RAM is specifically made
for Lombard/Wallstreet.

: So my bottom-line question: Is it wise or risky replacing the bottom
: socket low profile 64 MB module in my Lombard with a 528 MB unit, or
: should I be more convervative and replace it with a 256 unit?

256 MB module.

There are two ways to look at this mess:

1) M$ is being sensitive to the needs of old Mac OS (8-9) users.
The problem is that the old Finder on old Mac OS only supports
filenames up to 31 characters. Because Office force limits
filename lengths to this old restriction, OS X users can still
transport their Office documents to old Mac OS users without
mangling the filenames.

2) M$ is too lazy to implemented 10-year-old API changes.
Apple introduced HFS+ that supported 255-character filenames a
while ago (like a decade ago), as well as new APIs to handle
these longer filenames. I don't know if the old APIs even got
Carbonized for OS X! Anyways, it's just another example of a
giant monopoly not caring about taking advantage of all the
features of OS X and making a better app.

Choose your adventure and pick a path.

That's the nature of notebook-sized tray units. They *are* flimsy.
If you are really concerned about them bending too much to the point of
no return, you can try to support the tray by putting something under
the tray door to prevent it from flexing as you insert a disc.

Yes, there should. Buying replacements isn't too expensive. Here's a

Most mailing lists have some kind of moderation. Some are more actively

(but not this one, IMHO). For those curious, I can think of two OS X
lists that are minimally moderated:

http://www.themacintoshguy.com/lists/X.html

http://www.tit-wank.com/mailman/listinfo/osx-nutters

The former is a more minimally moderated list that is still focused
on OS X trouble-shooting, while the latter is just talking and very
little trouble-shooting.

If people feel that they want less restrictive list moderation, I think
people should have the choice to either find a forum they are more happy
with or even start their own forum. Of course, if you start your own
little forum, you might find it tough to play the role of a moderator
without seeming heavy-handed to some list members.

When you pump a lot of electrons into an electrical system, one of the
by-products is heat. Too much heat causes irrepairable damage. The
real problem is adequate heat disappation to keep the electrical system
within its operating parameters so that stuff doesn't melt into a
useless goo. Most solutions have been with traditional heat sinks:
either blocks of metal to radiate heat away and increase surface area
with the air, or fans to circulate more air to remove more heat from
heat sinks. But heat sinks have their physical limits (a block of
metal only conducts so much heat) and physical constraints (how much
room do you have in a computer?). And fans must use electricity to pump
more air (and how loud do you like your fans?).

Now on top of these problems, add the constraints of a smaller form,
limited power supply, and an end-user desire for less noise. It's not
a trivial problem. Saying that it's just a matter of getting more air
demonstrates not only a lack of knowledge in the area, but moreso a lack
of respect for difficulty of the problem. Go figure.

In OS X, you cannot play DVD with Apple's DVD Player 2.x because it is a

It covers Lombard because OS X didn't fully support the hardware. So no

Class action lawsuits sometimes suck, but sometimes it's the only way to

You should be able to run Panther on both Macs. The supposed cutoff for

Running the shell script (tcsh? ick) like that executes everything in a

To make those changes stick in the current process, you need to source it:

% source setEnv.tcsh

Do you have anything other non-standard hardware? Maybe some strange
CPU upgrade card? Or other external things like USB or SCSI devices,
or PCMCIA cards? Also, try removing one or the other 256 MB modules, or
even returning to your original Apple-supplied RAM (if you still have it).

You *can* watch DVDs on Lombard using Apple's DVD Player in Mac OS 8-9.

You *cannot* watch DVDs on Lombard using Apple's DVD Player in OS X.
The OS X installer does not install DVD Player on Lombard machines. And
even if you manually extracted it from the OS X CD-ROM, it won't launch
on Lombard.

You *can* watch DVDs on Lombard using VLC in OS X. But VLC is a pure
software-only player, so the quality is pretty unbearable (maybe 2 fps).

Sounds like you bought stacked RAM, a kind of RAM design that does not
work on older machines. Return the RAM module you bought and have it
exchanged for one that is specifically rated for Wallstreet/Lombard, or
get your money back and buy the right RAM from another vendor.

When Apple can afford to lose over $300 million per year from their home
entertainment division, I'm sure Apple can then address your concerns.

No. I'm saying that Apple's resources are rather tight, and the company
needs to focus on more important problems than esoteric user preferences.

True. To the untrained ear, MP3s ripped at 128 kbps CBR with joint
stereo is good enough for many of the masses. More pickier people will
go with 192 kbps or even 256 kbps and switch to normal stereo.

The maximum RAM on Lombard is 512 MB: a full-height 256 MB module, and
a low-profile 256 MB module. Make sure all memory modules are rated by
the manufacturer to be Lombard-compatible, not Pismo-compatible.
