Re: Lombard won't boot.

2006-01-30 Thread Francesco sciacca
Hi Caleb,

my experience with Jaguar on my Lombard 333 were not that good. Lenghty
spinning ball and so on all over the place. Mail in particular was close to
being unusable. Even so with a 5400 rpm 40 GB HD and 384MB of RAM. Panther,
however, was a whole different world and I still run 10.3.9 on it and been
very happy with it generally.

Roxio advertise the latest Toast 7 as being able to 'copy and compress'
DVDs. I'm not sure to what extent that works, but it'd be great to hear from
some actual user (if anyone out there). True that Dual-Layer DVDs would ease
the process, but when I bought a new Dual-Layer superdrive to beef up my
powerbook, little I knew that blancs went for £30 (well over $50) per
5-pack! And they still do now, 6 months later...

thanks for the suggestion, Laurent. In the post-install, I've used the
migration tool to migrate my home directory and the Network settings from
the main partition, which I've done several time in the past on many
drives). Yet, something must have gone wrong, no idea where to start
looking, though!

On a side note, running the book from the iPod is painfully slow, which
somehow surprises me.

Tiger on iPod: network problems

2006-01-21 Thread Francesco sciacca
hello listers,

I've just installed Tiger on my iPod with the intention of keeping a
rescue portable disk. I've then booted my powerbook from it and tried the
software updates. Unfortunately, although the PB shows as being connected
via Aiport, I get network connection failures.

Digging in the logs I've found this in /var/log/system.log:
executing /System/Library/ .../enable-network
posting notification com.apple.system.config.network.change
no server suitable for configuration found
target=enable-network: disabled
Repeated trnsactions for interface en1 (ip address); delaying packets by 5
seconds

Network diagnostics shows everything in green, except for ISP=failed
(red). Also, the file com.apple.system.config.network.change does not
exist neither on the iPod nor on my main Tiger partition.

Has anyone any experience of booting and running a PB from an iPod?? Maybe
there's something obvious I am missing...??

thanks for any help and cheers,
gianfranco

just tried this today to no avail. Also the connector for the video cable
(on the motherboard) seems fine. The cables are attached to the display
assembly and the inverter, so they can't be the culprit, as both the
display assembly and the inverter work fine on another lombard.

well spotted, thanks Vicky! Unfortunately, Its' long since I've lost my OS
9 discs, so I always use a bootable copy of a clean install to an ibook
that had not a DVD player.

more Lombard display and DVD issues

2006-01-19 Thread Francesco sciacca
Hi Listers,

I'm trying to salvage a Lombard for a friend and these are the two open
issues that I'm looking advice for:

1) Display is dark (image is there, but no back illumination; also S-video
out works fine to TV). I have ruled out the backlight (replaced a know-good
display assemblywith good backlight) and the inverter. This leaves a
possible fault on the motherboard, as the cables are part of the display
assembly. Does anyone know whereabouts on the motherboard to look for
possible damage (hoping to find visible damage, such a blown capacitor or
so). Or what other bits could be responsible for such behaviour?

2) This is a 400 MHz with DVD drive. Booting in OS9, system profiler informs
me that DVD decoder is present. However, when I try to play a DVD, I get the
message saying that this computer can't play DVDs. As anyone seen and/or
solved this?

thanks and cheers,
gianfranco

not sure about the 190, but the Lombard display replacement is a breeze. The
most difficult bit is removing the plastic top cover sitting between the
speakers to unveil the inverter, without breaking the little plastic tabs
that hold it into place, so pay extra care at that step. Run a google search
for to dig an easy to follow tutorial (Pismo == Lombard
as far as display replacement is concerned).

cheers and good luck,

In my case, CCC gave several errors claiming not to be able to copy certain
files (all belonging to the System folder, if I remember correctly). I tried
several times and errors seem to affects random files. I eventually I gave
up and created a Disk Image of the boot partition instead, burned it to DVD
and I am able to restore at will on any partition using Disk Utility.

Hi Zoltan,

this is an interesting bit of information, thanks for sharing it. I have one
observation and one additional question:

I have my SCSI peripherals hooked up to a Lombard on its SCSI port, yet
System Profiler (Tiger) doesn't show anything under SCSI. Everything works
perfectly, though.

Does the XpressSCSI adapter from Microtech you use break the requirement of
avoiding hot-plug/unplug of SCSI devices? Now, that would be something!

ok, tried that: exhausted the battery until the PB shut itself off.
Recharged to full. Taken out for about a minute, back in, same 99% level of
charge. Left the battery out overnight, then back in, still 99%.

thanks for the tip, I was not aware that resuming the charging process at
intervals could do the trick. I will give it a go soon and will report,
although, in my experience, discharging the battery until the PB shuts
itself off (not just goes to sleep) is a lengthy process and I can't afford
downtime on that machine unfortunately. In my case, it didn't work
overnight.

Last time I tried, I lauched all (nearly) the applications I have and let it
sit that way. Not sure if it was a thoughtful way to act, though... It did
shut down if left overnight.

ok, I'd be interested in that.

Any remedy to the common problem to have the pb going to sleep without
warning while advertising the battery with some 40% (or even more) charge?
I was advised by Apple personnel to try and run the battery completely down
in order to recalibrate, down to the point it shuts the computer down. I did
that once, but it didn't solve the problem.

I think it's something "introduced" by Panther? I have this also with Tiger.
Another advise I followed was that of replacing the Apple Battery monitor
from the menu bar and replacing it with Slim Battery, which I've done,
without improving the situation.

I've run into the same problem, but only with e-mail accounts from a
specific provider. It must have something to do with timeouts during
authentication on that specific server, as other accounts on different
server do not show this problem. I'm not sure if it's possible to tweak the
timeout limit in Mail.app. It is highly irritating indeed.

I second that. I actually use the first 2 measures only at the moment. The
reason being that not broadcasting SSID prevents my powerbooks from
connecting automatically to the given network as soon as Airport is turned
on.

Is there a known way around this, like setting somewhre the name of the

CCC & Tiger

2005-08-16 Thread Francesco sciacca
I just tried to clone a fresh Tiger install upgraded tp 10.4.2 to make
myself a ready-to-go disk to use in emergency and I didn't succed. I then
used Disk Utility to create a disk image of the freshly installed Tiger
partition, then I burned it to DVD, all well. When it came to restore,
though, it appears to do the restore procedure, but eventually the target
partition is empty or does not appear in the startup disk preference pane.

Is CCC working properly with Tiger? If yes, is it necessary to clone a "just
installed" partition or should it be able to clone any partition as it was
the case with Tiger?

Same story for the disc image: anything I should take care of to suceed in
creating an emergency disc? It looks as I'm doing something wrong, but I
can't think of what.

cheers,
gianfranco

Re: Pismo PowerBook display failing

2005-07-26 Thread Francesco sciacca
Andrew,

I've found the information you have provided (quoted below) invaluable. My
problem is the light bulb replacement for a Lombard and I take it the
disassembling guides you point to will still be valid (with minor
differences). I wonder though about the specific bulb. I know the Lombard
and Pismo displays are not interchangable, but I well suppose the bulb at
least should be the same part. But I'd like to get a definitive word on that
from some knowledge source.

Re: New PB G4: questions

2005-07-21 Thread Francesco sciacca
thanks all for the suggestions and help, I'll pass them on to ensure she
gets on the right tracks from the outset.

My question about the registration was more not related to warranty, but
more to making a link from serial number to the actual owner of the machine.
I was warned in the past that it's useful in case the PB is lost or stolen.
I don't know it that link is autoamtically in place when you buy it (I doubt
it) or if it becomes affective with the registration or if else is needed.

Good to know that 3 months apple care are included after the online
registration. That might be a good place to ask.

thanks again and cheers,
gianfranco

New PB G4: questions

2005-07-21 Thread Francesco sciacca
hi folks,
a friend just bought a new shiny 15" G4 and we have a couple of questions to
get started:
- filling in the registration at startup and sending to Apple is enough to
have the PB registred (with serial Nr., etc) to her name for all purposes?
Or is something else needed?

- I think I vaguely remember somebody mentioning additional services for
registering the Serial Nr. There's such a thing? If yes, does it make sense?
(we are in the UK)

- Battery: there was some advice for getting started on the right foot with
the battery. Was it charging up for some time, or discharging it to the
bone, baking, freezing, I can't recall. I remember the practice of
discharging it totally about once a month and the discharge to 40% + cool it
to maintain whwn not used for long times.

Thanks for any help to get her going with that jewel!

cheers,
gianfranco

The first time I opened my PB G4 it took me quite some time to get the
bottom cover off. There are 4 latches, you see 2 of them through the battery
compartment. Go on and unlatch them. This will allow you to lift the bottom
cover slightly frm the left side. The other two are located on the other
side of the front edge (simmetrically to the first two), one around the
middle of the optical drive, the other one at the edge of the HD. You have
to play quite a bit to get those unlatched, pushing the back cover away from
you and slightly to the right and trying to lift it from the edge close to
you (back edge). No lifting, no joy, it's crucial. Try as well to fiddle at
the front edge, pushing as much as you can -but don't break it!- At some
point it will just snap and it's off.

cheers,
gianfranco

Re: General Lombard Questions.

2005-07-12 Thread Francesco sciacca
I can only comment on a couple of points, having no experience with the
remaining issues:

> There are times when the Lombard seems to get very warm and I have
> not noticed the fan kick in. I am going to look for a temperature
> gauge for the system, but do not know what normal operating
> temperatures are for the Lombard.

In over 6 years of heavy daily lombard use, I've never heard the fan coming
in, even when the computer got quite hot. Three possibilities there: 1) fan
very quiet 2) fan not working 3) didn't need fan yet. I suspected there was
a procedure to force the fan spin at startup to check its funcionality, but
nobody has confirmed that yet.

> I have a used battery in the Lomard that lasts for about two hours of
> steady use with a wireless card in the PCMCIA slot. This is adequate
> for my uses, but again I have no idea what the working life of a new
> battery is in the Lombard.

you are a very lucky man, and this is probably a relatively new battery. I
don't remember ever getting 2 full hours of battery running word and nothing
else, maybe at the very beginning...

One thing you might want to do if you have the time and inclination is bump
up the RAM and replace the HD with a 5400 rpm one. When I did this back some
years ago, it gave new life to an othervise struggling machine. Now it runs
OX 9.2.2 quite zippy and is usable overall with OS 10.3.9. (it is a 333 MHz)

Re: 12" Powerbook as external DVD player for Television

>

I guess the best way to find out is giving it a try (it can't hurt). Connect
the video cable and hit "detect displays" in the display control panel. If
the PB desktop (or part of it) appears on the TV screen then you are all set
(you might still need to adjust the resolution - in my case it comes up 90%
of the times at the right resolution, but in NTSC mode so that it displays
in b&w, so I adjust it to PAL).

Don't forget at this stage to turn video-mirroring on. If it doesn't work
and you are sure that the TV (or VCR) is set to the right channel, then the
adapter is probably the wrong one.

Didn't your PB come with it's own video adapter?

gianfranco

I own and use a Lombard since 6 years and in my experience, in the pre-OS X
days, random freezes and/or crashes were predominantly due to conflicting
extensions (third party stuff) and lousy freeware randomly installed.

Temporary instabilities also in the sleep/non-slpeep/wake-from-sleep
department were also in my case due to the same reason.

If you want to tackle your case, you should firstly make sure to the best
extent that the basics of the hardware seems ok. That is, as previously
suggested, make sure that RAM cards (both), processor daughtercard, hard
drive cable, are all properly seated. After that, you have to go through the
painstaking process of sorting out extensions and control panels:

1) Boot the Lombard with all extension off (pressing the space-bar? I can't
remember...). Run like that, chek for freezes. If not:

2) Use the "Extension Manager" control panel and select "OS 9 only", or
something along these lines. Run like that, chek for freezes. If not:

3) Add, one by one (or a few at the time, again from the "Extension Manager"
control panel) additional extensions, taking care of not selecting anything
you do not strictly need for your work. Run like that, etc

Since this this process will take you some time, I would suggest (if you
pass step 1) and possibly 2)), you just back up your data and re-install the
OS afresh, after which, make sure you install only the stuff you strictly
need for your work. Of course there's also the chance of some hardware
fault, but it's advisable you get your software sorted first, unless you
have the bits and pieces to check the hardware (like spare RAM, etc...)

Lombard with OS 9.2 is a great machine, Finder is way more responsive than
my 1 GHz Titanium running Panther and graphics apps work a charm (at least
on mine, 333 MHz, 384 MB RAM)

cheers,
gianfranco

Optical drive compatibility

2005-06-09 Thread Francesco sciacca
Thanks to Malcolm and Laurent for the replies to my previous G3 processor
query. I have another one concerning optical drives. I remember a lister
had an excellent page on the subject of optical drives for powerbooks, but
I've lost the link.

I have upgraded my Titanium to a SD and I'd like to adapt the original
Combo drive to the Lombard. Before I go and dismantle it, I thought I'd
ask (as the Lombard drive is no longer in its best shape and I'd hate to
taked it apart for nothing).

I remember reading somewhere that that Combo drive would fit anything from
the mac mini to any powerbook capable of having an optical drive. Anybody
with first hand experience?

Lombard 333/400 processor cards

it has a 4-way hub (2 at the back, 2 at the side). This link could be of
interest to those on the market for a WS 20" flat panel for their "PB at the
desk setup":

I was considering the 20" cinema display, but the Dell is a cheapo, here in
the UK at 399 GBP shipped vs 472 (with edu discount) for the cinema display.
Also with the Dell I could hook both the PB G4 and G3... and the VCR. Tough
choice...

MOTU FW interface and PB [was: Need tips for using...]

2005-05-24 Thread Francesco sciacca
> MOTU Fastlane USB MIDI interface connected to the second USB port.
> MOTU 896 Firewire interface connected to the Ti and a 120GB OWC Firewire
> drive connected to the 896.

Nick,

thanks for sharing that. I have a setup with some similarities running on a
TiBook 1 GHz and wasn't sure whether the FW drive would work properly if
connected to the 896, I had conflicting info on this (I actually have a 828
MK2 but I assume it will be the same).

You say the 896 is upset if hot-unplugged. I haven't noticed problems with
the 828. What does happen exactly?

Apart from that, is the system stable? Or do you experience occasional
problems?

My desktop setup is: FW to the MOTU 828 MK2 audio interface, USB to
unpowered cheap hub to which I connect the Apple Pro Mouse, Logic Pro 7
dongle, Emagic EMT8 USB MIDI interface, Beringher BC2000 Control Faders.
Planning to add a 20" Cinema display soon and the FW drive. Stable as a
rock, until I upgraded RAM, that is. Had to go back to the original stick...
But will need to upgrade nevertheless from 512 Mb.

I print via airport to a USB printer hooked to the Lombard (hard-Ethernet to
WL router -> cable modem) and I also run mini-jack audio out to the mixing
desk for casual listening without having to fire up the 828. So only 4
cables to the 'book, not too bad!

cheers, gianfranco

the 1 GHz actually is the last 15" using such RAM (PC133 SD_RAM SO-DIMMS).
I have also found only 512Mb so far (both in the US and EU). But I'd love to
hear we haven't looked hard enough!

Re: Wireless USB Adapter (802.11b/802.11g) recommendation?

that's supposedly the DWL-122 USB adapter. I have tried this one out last
summer and it was causing random and frequent kernel panics on a Lombard
running Panther. I can't recall what version of panther it was. DWL-122
firmware was the latest at that point in time (can't recall the version
either), so were the OS X drivers.

I just reckon they have since replaced it with the DWL-G122, ditching Mac
support altogether.

Re: Apple Security Update (2005-003): PB crash!

2005-04-15 Thread Francesco sciacca
well, that's exactly my point: the RAM is from the same manufacturer, has
exactly the same electrical characteristics than the 256 modules that came
with my PB G4, therefore if it works on one machine (as it does) and not on
the other there's something wrong with the machine and/or OS design.

Making machine-upgrades more user friendly could gain apple quite a few
extra clients (and avoid loosing a few along the way).

Re: Ti 1ghz

You can install OS 9 only if you wish. In my current setup I have an OS 9
partition that has the regular OS 9 install on it.

When booting in OS X, I have classic pref set to run classic from the Syetem
folder of the OS 9 partition. The OS 9 partitition is effectively
independent of OS X.

Re: Apple Security Update (2005-003): PB crash!

2005-04-12 Thread Francesco sciacca
thanks for all the suggestions. After way too long down time, it turns out
that the 512 RAM module I has added appears to be the culprit. Disk turned
out to be fine, checked with SMARTD. Replacing the original 256 MB module
restored stability.

I'm puzzled as the 512 module is a 512mb PC133 SO-DIMM CAS3 pulled from a
iBook G3 (in which it works very well) and this is exactly the kind of RAM
used by the PB G4 1GHz. It has also exactly the same labels on it as the
original 256 sticks, it looks the same, same brand, except for being
sligthly shorter in height. I'm not sure if this is to be considered 3rd
party RAM? It has also worked with no problems since I installed it, just
until all hell broke loose with the latest software updates.

So the message here is for those attempting to up their RAM without being
robbed by Apple: be very careful. I'm not sure whether it's the OS or the
machine hardware responsible for this pickyness about RAM, either way it's
highly irritanting (to me at least).

cheers and thanks again for the help,
gianfranco

Re: Apple Security Update (2005-003): PB crash!

2005-04-08 Thread Francesco sciacca
> Well, for one thing, disk problems are never good. So, you are saying that
> while copying the installers to another machine, it crashed? What crashed
> exactly? The Finder? When talking about installers, I'm assuming you mean
> "packages" (.pkg)?

yes, there was a kernel panic while copying the .pkg files to another
machine. Three-finger reboot. This was the very first symptom. Later on,
after a forced re-boot following a freeze during repair permission I had:
"Disk Utility has lost connection with the disk management tool and cannot
continue. Please quit and relaunch disk utility"
If trying to quit it would say: "disk utility has still some operation in
course. Quitting in the middle of some operation can leave a disk non
operational". Catch 22. I had to quit it in order to continue.
Disk utility log: Filesystem object has an invalid type, cannot dearchive.

What I did/attempted next on the OS X partition:
- archive and install of OS 10.3.5 from DVD: failed
- clear and install of OS 10.3.5 from DVD: ok
- software update to 10.3.8 from Apple server: ok
- iLife 05 from DVD: installer quits after few steps (tried a few times)
- iPhoto from iLife 05 DVD: same as above
- GarageBand from iLife 05 DVD: goes through install. At the end this
message: There were errors installing the software"
- repair disk permissions: 2 instances repaired
- install iLife 05 from DVD. No errors (but iTunes, etc NOT updated to
latest versions!)
- install iTunes only: success, updates iTunes to latest version
- install iMovie only: installer quits
- run repair permissions: same error as above: "Disk utility has lost
connection..."

so success/failures occur almost randomly. I start from scratch again:

- Boot from OS 10.3.5 DVD, wipe the OS X partition with disk utility
- Install OS: stalls during writing files base system 2. Force restart from
OS9 partition
- Boot from OS 10.3 CD, install OS succesfull from CD1+2.
- It reports correctly 768 MB of RAM

Given the symptoms reported above, what could be my next best bet move
before I head directionless at guessing fixes, maybe creating more damage? I
thought first that the file system was corrupted, but in that case a clean
install should have cured it?
And I suppose my next dumb question is: this is a Titanium G4. Is installing
OS 10.3.5 from the DVD that came with my collegue Aluminum G4 a bad thing
(as opposed to installing from the original CD)?

cheers and thanks for any help,
gianfranco

didn't have yet time to check the iLife & Garageband install logs on the
clean system, will do that next thing (don't have the PB with me now). But
the Security Update Install log simply mentioned it had failed (no other
clues). Didn't check permissions after the clean OS install. Do I have to???

First thing I did after the the first batch of installs was copying the
installers over to another machine over airport. While copying is where it
crashed the first time. By the time I managed to launch disk utility, the
other partitions had gone and repair disk permissions was hanging at about
10% progress, machine froze. By the way, disk utility reported the other
partitions as OK, even if they were grayed out. Its log, showed "mount OK"
when i tried to mount them.

System logs seemed to show only a problem related to the Modem at boot time
(?? I do not use it in any internet config), and something very cryptic
probably related to the missing Volumes. Nothing I understood, but these
partitions are clearly not the problem, rather victims. I gave up
scrutinising the logs and went for the OS install instead, hoping to wipe
the problem, which apparently I didn't.

cheers, gianfranco

ok, I see no other way than just trying. Well the display has costed me
over 500 EUR, which I know is crazy but is the best (actually the *only*)
deal I could get in Germany. Unfortunately i'm in the meantime relocating,
so I will have to wait a few more days before giving it a try, I will then
certainly report (possibly with a smile!)

Laurent:
> Unless you have a spare ribbon cable, I'm afraid you'll need to pretty

I'm confused on this one. What cable you refer to? The display assembly
has all the cables it needs, so I should just be able to plug the so-
called "data" cable to the logic board (left side, is this the ribbon
cable you refer to?) and the backlight cable to the inverter on the right
side. What I'm afraid of is that for some obscure effect, a bad inverter
could blow the CCFL lamp and I'm back at the beginning, only with 500 EUR
less in the pocket!!

cheers for the advice, gianfranco
