Having used both OS's on a WS I and a WS II, I have to agree.
Panther corrected a number of issues both Wallstreets I used had with

Yes to all.

I used a 15-inch Al PB as a desktop machine and was happy with the
result. I put the book on the far side of the desk on a stand higher

connecting at an iCafe

2006-02-21 Thread Peter Saint James

Some recent experience with internet cafes leaves me with a question
that perhaps some of you who manage networks can answer.

Usually I can simply plug the network cable in my powerbook and it
connects without a problem.

Sometimes I need to prompt the powerbook to connect to the network.
It usually figures out the setting and I'm good to go.

On occasion, however, my computer can't figure out the settings and
needs to be configured manually. It asks for four numbers: IP
address, Subnet mask, Router, and DSN server. If the chief geek is
around, he has all of these in his head and just types them in.
Usually, however, the apprentice geek or a clerk is the only one
available and has a problem coming up with the right information.
Usually phone calls are made to get the info.

What I would think would be the thing to do in such a situation, I
have never seen anyone do, and I wonder why. Can't they just look up
these setting on one of their machines in the Windows equivalent of
System Preferences?

If it's possible, where is the information? I assume it's in the
Control Panel somewhere. Probably under network, right?

TIA

I ordered my Pismo G4/550 upgrade from them and waited for five days
for an email notification of shipment. The only other communication
I recieved was an emailed receipt of sale a couple of days after the
purchase. I suppose you could say that they are minimalist in
communication. They are very much unlike Daystar in this respect.
However, the upgrade is working fine. I will know more about how
well they take care of their customers as I wait for the 'core' cost

Not to present. You can export the Keynote presentation to PPT. In

Re: WallStreet DVD-ROM issue, perchance?

2006-02-01 Thread James Sanderson
I was able to get a Pismo on eBay for $200+s/h. I did spend money to
add memory and move to a 500 MHz processor. I think that I got
'lucky' because the comp's description included a pink-light-on-start-
up-but -goes-away-after-a-seconds issue. The latter hasn't bothered
me in the least. I've priced out the replacement. I think I'll be
with this one for a while.
I was happy with the WS for basic internet surfing and note-taking.
When I decided I wanted to use Keynote for several school
presentation, the WS became obsolete.

Another thing: I've read a couple of scare stories about how hard

It is not always the understanding of the goons that enforce the

them trying to justify their existence.

No OS 9 installed? It should boot into 9 if you want it too. I had
none of this with two WS's.

if I'm getting this correctly, I should
partition it to smithereens, install OSX into the first partition, the
Classic OS into the second, and use whatever remains for bulky file
storage; any caveats you feel worth mentioning?

Don't know about partitioning to smithereens--a bit of an hyperbole,
perhaps--but definitely in two sections with X on the first
partition and 9 on the second. Install 9 first and download
XPostFacto if you want to go to Panther, 10.3, which I would
recommend for the following reason:

4) The Curse of the Darkened Screen. During bootup (and after the
initial apple logo vanishes), you can only see what's going on if you
use a torch or some such. Upon bootup, this can be rectified with a
single touch of the brightess regulator, but that's the only option.
If I accidentally close the lid, it goes into sleep mode and then
doesn't make the screen bright enough when it awakens. The brightness
regulator does nothing in those cases. Is there a cure?

I believe your problem stems from running Jaguar. I've had two WS's
with similar issues in Jaguar. Among the video issues in 10.2 were
artifacts left on the screen that opening a window might eliminate,
not waking from sleep, washed out screen, melting screen effects and
so on. An upgrade to 10.3 solved the problem entirely. Both
machines have run flawlessly in Panther.

 5) Processor upgrade. Is the 250-dollar upgrade to G4 500 offered by
wegenermedia.com the best and cheapest option, or have I missed
something? Will I be better off with an equal G3? Are there any better
ways?

Some may disagree with me, but I feel that a G4 upgrade, while
attractive, doesn't make a lot of sense on this machine. It has a
slower bus speed than a Lombard (or Pismo), 66 MHz vs 100 MHz. A G3
upgrade, maybe. The machine is a trooper and can do all sorts of
things that surprises my Windows friends when we compare their
machines made at the same time as the WS. But the bus speed, I
think, hobbles its ability to work with such apps as Keynote and
Pages. There are others who can speak better to this issue.

I use 896x600 on a 15-inch powerbook fairly successfully.

The only problems I've had are that the menu bars or apps with
column format sometimes get crowded. Also if I have to paste text
from one app to another, sometimes I have to adjust the text size,
but I suppose that would happen no matter what.

When at home, I use a remote keyboard and have the powerbook about
three or four feet away from me. I find this set-up much better than

Most of the people I have run across who have wrist and arm problems

Your installing OS X on the second partition, could be the issue.
It wants to be on the first partition. Either install it there or

Tried this on a WS II, installing on the second partition. It would
not install until I repartitioned the drive to install X on the

Re: Lombard won't boot

2006-01-03 Thread James Sanderson
If this is so, and Clark says he could do this on a WS, I wonder what
I was doing wrong.
Still, the suggestion in the past has been to start with the memory.
If it's the L2 cache (which is a memory register--if that's the right
term), you'll have to swap with a compatible processor card.

Well, I'll just be quiet now and learn from you good folks!

According to Apple:
"Beginning with Power Macintosh computers with PCI slots, Power
Macintosh computers rely on a firmware operating system called
"Open Firmware" for controlling hardware. Open Firmware is a cross-
platform firmware standard for controlling hardware and is used by
all PCI-based Mac OS computers."

topic, but it's somewhat related, but I've been having troubles
with discs refusing to mount on my Lombard. Sometimes it works,
sometimes it doesn't. Today, it really annoyed me, because I had a
brand-new CD that I was trying to get to load on the ol' Lombard

on the labeling that it would work on OS 8 or 9 with QuickTime 4 or
above. The Lombard refuses to mount it in OS X, and I don't want to
go to OS 9, because I don't have any mp3 encoding software for 9.
In the end, I gave up and used iTunes on my Windoze machine, but
I'm really irritated at things for not working on the Lombard.

I would second this advice. Those old 233MHz processors don't cut
it. Get the second generation processors. I was informed by one on
this list that second generation processors would work on the first
generation machines, not vice versa. If you were to seek an upgrade

Thanks,

I thought of doing that so it reset it. That didn't solve the
problem. I was able to boot of a OX 9.2 disc and reselect the start
up volume. Oddly, that didn't work either. I went back to the
processor and rearranged the SODIMM's to the original placement, the
smaller (64 MB) in the lower slot. Voilà, the computer started up
without a hitch.

I wonder what that bodes for a memory upgrade for this processor.

Thanks again for your help,

I've had some minor issues with eBay, but nothing that would create any
big problems. I use Camino, and in the preferences (extra download) you
can use "agent spoofing" to fool sites into thinking you are using a
different browser. I rarely use it, but some sites will not work at all
without using say IE for Windoze.

Take care.

Interesting idea. Does a WS II CPU work on a WS I? I upgraded the

One person suggested now might be the time to take advantage of

Jim Sanderson

Daystar (or any other rework shop) has a harder time upgrading the
WS1 CPUs as the L2 cache parts are BGA, while the WS2 L2 cache
parts are quad flat (easier to rework). Find a cheap WS2 233/512K
l2 CPU card on ebay and send that in for upgrade.

Nope. Worked with a 14" WS II with the same issues with video.
Video problems went away with Panther installed. The memory issue
has to do with processor limitations. My old processor on the WSI

Re: what linux and what kernel for my wallstreet?

2005-11-19 Thread Rajah James
Tried posting this once, didn't see it in the online-archive ( http://

On Nov 15, 2005, at 11:00 PM, Mike Kauspedas wrote:

Yellow Dog? Ubuntu?

I don't know about straight linux on PPC, but I run fink and gentoo
(portage) as package managers in OS X, on my 12" pb.

I personally use Gentoo GNU/Linux for my various other non-mac boxen,
portage is very powerful.

I have heard of many people running Gentoo on macs though, as they
have a PPC branch of portage. A quick google brings:

http://www.desertsol.com/~kevin/ppc/

But if you you've never used GNU/Linux, I'd say start with Yellow
Dog. Having never used YDL, I base this opinion on my experience with
Red Hat, which was the distro I lost my GNUginty(c) to. YDL forked
(ported?) from Red Hat at some point. YDL's package manager (yum), is
available in Fedora, and I remember it being fairly easy to use

Which kernel version? I was thinking maybe an older version would
run better on the older hardware, if I can find one.

If your using it as a laptop on-the-go (as opposed to server), I
think that most of the stuff that you'd probably want (proper sleep,
etc.) will be in the 2.6 kernel, aka the newer one.

Security wise, both 2.4 and 2.6 are kept up-to-date, afaik.

But yeah, in general most of the distro's you've discussed have
fairly good docs. For example, Gentoo's is very good: http://
www.gentoo.org/doc/en/handbook/handbook-ppc.xml

So good luck, good googling, and always read the docs.

dimming screen

2005-10-31 Thread Peter Saint James

The display on my 15-inch, Al Powerbook running Tiger
sometimes dims when the computer is inactive for just a few minutes.
I can get it brighten again by moving the mouse or hitting a key, but
this is quite inconvenient and irritating.

This habit is not consistent. It does it some days and not
others. There does not seem to be a pattern to when, except--and I'm
not sure of this--it may be doing it when the computer has not been
booted for several days.

The box in system preferences that refers to automatically
reducing brightness is unchecked. Is there anything else that
controls this? Does it indicate something else wrong?

TIA.

Re: 12" Powerbook G4: an AppleCare and AppleStore assesment

from a BestBuy sales-idiot.

I wouldn't rate it "disaster," but improvements could be made.

The stores are made to sell things, which they do well.
Service is a sideline and not well done. Stores also feed the Apple
cult idea. It's the place to be, to hang around with the other
Appleheads, to feel special, etc. The one near me is always full of
teenagers. They are made to feel at home there more than in some of
the general retailers.

As to the service aspect, there is plenty of room for
improvement. And, yes, they are pissing people off. Computer users
get excited when computers can do something half a nanosecond faster,
but they have to wait at least two hours to get service at an Apple
store. That's stupid. Apple advertises that one can make an
appointment in advance; they neglect to mention that's an extra
hundred bucks.

It's insulting to deal with people whose job title is
"genius" but who give the word genius a bad name. Some don't have
common sense or service sense. Seems to me a better name would be
"Service Provider." That might give them a better orientation toward
customer service.

In my neighborhood an independent Apple retailer is about a
block away from an Apple store. The service manager at the
independent is a bit gruff, but at least he usually knows what he's
doing. The independent is a good shop, and the Apple store makes
them look even better.

Outgoing mail password

I'm having trouble getting Mail to send messages.

I believe (but don't know) that it's because my ISP

Evidently they made these changes a month ago, but I just started
having trouble in the past day. I changed the settings as
instructed, but still cannot get the server to accept more than one
message at a time.

Anyone on Earthlink know the secret to getting this to work,
or is there some other problem that I don't know about?

In several tries, it froze-up each time; the best was at 6 minutes

remain on OS-9.2, which has worked very well and never freezes-up.

Art Richard (St. Petersburg, FL)

I know this is probably not going to be helpful for getting X on the
WS; however, I had a similar problem installing X on a B/W. I tried
and tried and tried and tried. I swapped memory and tried a number
of things that didn't work. Then I gave up. One day a FEW months
later--about seven--I gave it a try. And lo! it installed without a
hitch. I have no clue why after so many months it allowed the
installation.
I guess the point is that you can try all the freakin' tech stuff
that should allow you to do what you know you should be able to do on
the machine, but the machine sometimes decides when it will do it. ;-)

Serious suggestion: try a different HD. I had a WS--a 4 GB
original--that would do the same thing when I was installing X.2. I
bought a new HD--a 20 GB--and partitioned it per the specs and--
voilá!--it installed without a hitch. Also, I have had terrible luck
installing and working with X.2 on a WS. X.3 has proven flawless.

Onyx is good! You can tell it to enable the debug menu for Safari.
After the restart you can import the bookmarks from the debug menu.
You also get a good maintenance utility for free.

Re: scanning software?

2005-08-24 Thread Peter Saint James

A few days ago I asked about scanning software that would make
one PDF file of multiple scans. Turns out there is a method to do
this built into Tiger, according to macosxhints. It adds an
additional step, but the price is right and it seems easy enough.

You must first scan all the pages, getting a separate PDF file
for each page. Then you can select the documents that you want to
combine in the Finder and then Control-click on them to bring up the
contextual menu.

Choose Automator -> Create Workflow.

Once Automator opens, add three steps to your Untitled workflow:

-Finder: Get Selected Finder Items. Actually, this one is
automatically added if you had the files selected in the Finder.

-PDF: Combine PDF Pages.

-Finder: Open Finder Items (Open with Default Application).

This will combine everything, then open up a Preview document with
all the PDF pages nicely laid out in one document. You can save the
workflow if you do this on a regular basis. Then Control-clicking on
a group of PDFs will give you a contextual menu with your workflow
ready to go.

For anyone with too much money, I also found several programs
that cost $49 to $499 that will do the same thing.

scanning software?

2005-08-19 Thread Peter Saint James

I bought a HP 2175 all-in-one machine with the intention of
scanning some multi-page documents to PDF, only to find out the
machine won't do this. This is a surprise since other HP machines
do. HP support [sic] claims that only machines with document feeders
will scan multiple pages to one PDF. This is not correct, but it is
a moot point since this machine refuses to.

I'm wondering if there is some economical third-party
scanning software anyone would recommend or some other work-around to
accomplish this task.

TIA

There's something about spamming that has me puzzled.

I'm at a loss to see how it pays. I can't imagine enough
people dim enough to buy something from a spammer. Who could
possibly believe they could get anything worth having from someone
who obviously is out to exploit and annoy them? I have been known to
underestimate human stupidity, but it seems that there can't be
enough people out there that dumb who still have any money left to
take away from them.

It would also seem that if spamming really does pay, this
undermines one of the foundations of classical economics, which is
supposed to be based on the idea that buyers are rational people
pursuing goals favorable to themselves.

Double clicking opens a separate window for that contact in Address

that way for any Mail field, I apparently misunderstood the question.

What I understood is that by clicking on the Address Book button
on the tool bar of a new message or reply gets you access to Address
Book listings and clicking on the listing gets that name and address
in the proper field. Address book application is not opened.

2. Why use the Address Book in the first place? If you know the
name of a person you want to send an email to, just start typing.
If that person has more than one email address, a list will pop
down; same thing for different recipients whose names begin with
the same characters.

I would find it more convenient to use the click method because
I wouldn't have to remember how the entry was make in address book, I
could chose which e-mail address, and other things. I might want to
choose several listings or see the list to jog my memory. It's just
a different way that minds work. For someone who used Bcc
frequently, I could see this would be a source of irritation and
inconvenience. I think this program behavior is a bug.

No. The computer should be able to boot from the CD as long as it

Maybe there is something wrong with the new drive.

This is what happens when I read posted too late at night. Your
issue isn't exactly as mine was. I had a WS II with a stock G3/282
in it. The TravelStar HD was an older model without the liquid
bearing. Something about the placement of the HD in the WS causes
the older drives to freeze up, something about magnetism... Anyway
the older drives need to have some kind of shielding placed on them
to keep them from locking up. The one I had was really bad; it would
lock up after going to sleep; at times it would lock up on start up;
at times is would lock up if it idled to long (after I disabled the
sleep mode). Since your machine seems to lock up regardless of the
OS, perhaps the HD is the problem. I don't believe there are any
settings on the HD itself to change.
I suggested this because you seem to steer away from the heat
issue. I don't recall if the fan on my WS runs full time, though I
imagine it must. If yours doesn't, perhaps the fan itself is
defective or the connector is not making full contact. You're right
it does seem to be a software issue with 9 since the machine performs
with the cache write-through on in X. Perhaps you should contact
Daystar about this; they were always quite helpful to me with the
upgrades I made on my older Power PC's, very responsive.

Re: Problem with Wallstreet HD install

2005-06-23 Thread James Sanderson

Decided today to try to get a little more life out of
the old Wallstreet by putting in a new hd. I had a 30g
Hitachi i bought six months ago and stuck it in.
Holding down the C key I tried to boot to the 10.2
disk, but only got the flashing question mark. This
made no sense so I tried resetting pram, power
manager, tried an external keyboard, used a zip with
9.1 on it, and diskwarrior but no luck.
Thinking I must have damaged something, I took the new
drive out and replaced the old. It started up and I
was able to boot the 10.2 disk. Put the new drive in
an enclosure, hooked it up to my G4 and formatted and
partioned it. Back into the Wallstreet and the same
problem.
I have installed a number of drives over the years,
but this has me stumped. Its got to be something
simple I'm overlooking - a real forehead smacker.
Could someone please tell me what I'm missing here?

Rereading this post led me to understand that you have a clean
HD without any OS on it. Boot from a OS 9 CD. Partition the HD in
two sections, the first partition must be less than 8 GB. Install OS
9 on the second partition. I don't know if you can do this from your
Zip drive, unless you have the disk utility on it. After installing
the OS, restart the machine using OS 9 then download XPF and install
OS X.3 using XPF on the first partition. I would not install X.2 on
the Wall Street as it causes all sorts of flaky monitor behaviours,
like a 'melting' effect from which you cannot recover without a
restart, no wake from sleep, desktop pictures that are partially
scrambled cured by moving an open window around (mine did this on the
lower portion of the monitor only). The first two are the real 'turn-
offs,' though.
I have a 12" WS I upgraded to a 300 MHz processor and 83 MHz bus
as a result of the upgrade and added a larger HD as you are doing. X.
3 has run with a hitch and smoothly even with only 160 MB of RAM. I
have also worked on a WS II with a 14.1" screen, doing much the
same. I had the same issues with X.2 on it as well, but no problems
with X.3. If you should go to X.3 do follow XPF's directions for
installation carefully as there is a video issue with a WS
installation of X.3.

surge suppressors revisited

2005-06-23 Thread Peter Saint James

Several months ago, we discussed using or not using surge
suppressors with Powerbooks, and I found out the hard way that we
came to an erroneous conclusion.

We concluded that the power adapter would protect the Powerbook
from a surge. Turns out this is not true.

I have to admit that the surge to my book was a big one. A bolt
of lightening hit near my house. It knocked out the surge suppressor
then continued on, zapping the printer, other items that were plugged
into it, and my powerbook.

The power adapter was indeed fried. Replacing it didn't solve
problems, however. Apple replaced the motherboard, and it now seems
to be working okay. Fortunately, AppleCare covered it.

It still bothers me that the manual is mute on this subject and
even includes an illustration showing the power adapter plugged
directly into the wall socket. It also seems odd to me that
computers don't come equipped with surge suppressors.

On a separate note, I am having some trouble with my new G4/466
upgrade from Daystar. I noticed after running a few minutes under
OS X 10.3.9, the unit would lock up the first time it went to
sleep. Under OS 9.2.2, the unit would lock up within 60 seconds of
booting. This did not appear to be a heat issue.

After installing the XLR8 software, and using the write through
cache setting, the lockups under OS X stopped and the unit runs
fine in X. I did the same for OS 9.2.2, and it didnt improve
anything. I tried an entirely different hard drive with 9.2.2 on
it, and the same lock up occurred. I made sure to enable power
conservation under both OS versions. it also doesnt seem to be RAM
related.

This appears to be some sort of software issue with OS 9 and a G4.
Has anyone run across this type of problem before ?

Only when I used an old TravelStar HD. It would do exactly as you
describe. Doubt this is a software issue.

Re: international travel-charging issues?

2005-06-05 Thread Peter Saint James

On 4 Jun2005, at 8:53 PM, Kathryn Odell wrote:

If so, would this hold true for iPod shuffles as well? (I have the
usb charger for the Shuffle.)

If you're plugging the iPod into a USB port on the computer to
charge it, you don't need to change anything on it. What comes out
of the USB port should be the same no matter what is charging the
computer's battery.

If the charger plugs into a wall socket, the charger should have
the relevant information on it. Law requires a label or embossing on
the charger (or anything else you plug in).

For example, a Powerbook charger says "Input: 100-240v 50-60
Hz." That tells you it can use both US's 120 voltage and most of
the rest of the world's 240 voltage. If an iPod wall-plug charger
says something similar, you don't need to transform the power, just
adapt the plug.

On the other hand, if the info says something more limited, like
"Input: 120v 60 Hz," that means US power only and that you have to
use a transformer with foreign electricity.

If you plan to use a phone cable for the computer, it must be
converted also. Additionally you would be wise to get a device to
tell you if the signal from the phone jack is safe. Some places have
a different type of signal, which will harm the computer. This may
not be relevant since your US ISP probably does not have a dial-up
number in London so you'll be using wireless anyway. But check this
out before plugging in a phone cable.

>One more thing--Apple sells a world adaptor pack; would there be
any reason I couldn't just use the plugs I already have?

Plugs and sockets are different in different parts of the
world. UK plugs have round prongs (I think) so you need something to
adapt the different shaped prongs to the sockets you'll encounter.
Besides Apple's adapters, there is a device sold in hardware stores
that combines a small surge protector with an adaptor for different
socket configurations.

Have a good trip.

My Fellow PowerBook-philes,

and with full RAM. I have Mac OS X.2.8 running on it.

But the screen does this funky thing where the backlight on the LCD
stops working when it boots up. To fix it, all you need to do is hit
the "brightness" button. When it goes to sleep, however, it seems to
not want to come back up.

I have read on Lowendmac.com (I'll find this link later) that if you
boot into OS 9, let it go to sleep, then bring it back up, boot back
into OS X then it should be fixed. (At least until you let your
batteries die while your Wallstreet is asleep again.)

I have a WS I that had the same issues only in in X.2.x. When I
upgraded to X.3.x, the backlighting and display sleep went away
problems and never came back. I will admit that I have never tried
putting the hard drive to sieep because I used to have an old
Travelstar 20 GB that would lock up if it did. I never changed the
setting after I changed the hard drive.

If you don't have Panther or you don't want to go through the trouble
of upgrading (the upgrade requires you to use Xpostfacto 3), let the
buyer put it on the machine. Take X off. The machine is upgradeable
and runs X.3 competently even with only 160 MB's, which is all I have
on mine. It's not blazing fast; it's useable if all the buyer wants
is to do word processing, reading mail, and surfing the internet. I
know that the more memory there is the better the machine operates; I
simply haven't put it on this one.

Forget all this other stuff. It doesn't sound like it's worth the
hassle, especially if you want to sell it.

Well sounds easy to fix, yes? No.

I have an OS 9.1 install disk. It is a backup copy of a broken
one, so

it is a CD-R.

I can't install OS 9 with it. (Won't boot into OS 9.)

I then tried to copy over an OS 9 folder which works booting another
Wallstreet which only runs OS 9 by copying it onto a Flash Card and
then

back into the OS 9 folder.

No dice. Won't boot.

What I do is go to System Preference-> Startup Disk and then choose
the

OS 9 partition with the OS 9 start folder.

I then reboot and it reboots into a gray screen. I then have to spend
the next half-hour to an hour trying to convince it to reboot into the
Mac OS X.2 install CD I have and then I have to reinstall OS X. (BTW,
the LCD Backlight will not work when doing this. Loads of fun.)

I'd really like to resell this computer at least at the same price I
bought it at, maybe more, and I think I would be able to do so if I
could 1) get the backlight working and/or 2) get OS 9 to dual boot
on it.

I could really use the money in order to look into upgrading my GF's
Pismo to use iSight (if possible) or just paying down some credit
cards

before I go to law school.

Does anyone have ANY ideas on what I can do???

Jaguar ran slowly on the WSI with a 233 processor as the WS I/233 has

Runs great on my WS I/292, with only 162MB. I think about how much
better it would be if it could support more memory, but I've had some
issues with larger memory. The sound of broken glass at startup with
two different sticks that work in other computers. It did this with
the original processor, too, a 233 like yours. I think that the
processor upgrade would be worthwhile if you really like Panther more
than Jaguar. This comp had issues with Jaguar; it ran more slowly,
wouldn't wake from sleep, and it had some serious video issues
(screen would turn blank, for example, or it would 'melt'). The
upgrade to Panther fixed all those issues, but ran slowly until I
upgraded the processor, not that it's blazing fast now, mind, but it

Re: Which Powerbook for school?

2005-05-10 Thread Peter Saint James
On 9 May2005, at 11:09 PM, MARIO RAMIREZ wrote:
I'm going off to college soon and want to get a
PowerBook G4 for school. I have about $1000 to spend
and would like the 15" screen. Since there are so many
models of PowerBook, I'm very confused. What's the
difference between TiBooks and AlBooks. What's the
best configuration I can do for $1000. Since it's
obviously going to be used, I was thinking eBay.

You would also be wise to check out Dealmac:
http://dealmac.com/?tmp=1
They have notices of refurbished Powerbooks.
From my experience, I would advise you to look for Aluminum over
Titanium. They seem to have fewer problems. They are a more robust
piece of machinery. Others may disagree. They are both very good.
Assess your needs carefully; you may find that an iBook meets your
needs for much less money. They were designed with students in
mind. Be sure to check out what you can get with your educational
discount.

Other important differences between Powerbooks are fairly
simple. They amount to speed of processor (not terribly significant
unless doing something that requires high speed), amount of RAM (the
more the better), and features such as Bluetooth, Airport, and the
type of optical drive.

Bluetooth allows you to run wireless devices such as keyboards
and mice and sync with phones. In my experience Bluetooth is handy
but not crucial.

Airport allows you to connect to the internet wirelessly; if you
don't get it, you'll probably wish you did. A g card (also called
Airport Extreme) is better than a b card.

A Superdrive allows you to burn DVDs and CDs; a Combo drive only
burns CDs. Usefulness of Superdrive depends on whether you will
want to put that much data on a disk. It's good to have if you don't
have another back-up device. Crucial if you're planning on doing
something like making movies. Otherwise not necessary.

One other feature that may be useful to you is a lighted
keyboard. It's easier to use in sometimes dimly lighted classrooms.
Not crucial, but handy.

You'd be wise to find a used book with AppleCare. Their
portable nature makes Powerbooks vulnerable.

The advantage of a used book is that it usually contains
software that you might otherwise not be able to afford. Take full
advantage of that.

You're looking at a good time. For the past couple of years
both hardware and software have been very good. You're likely to get
a good machine.

Your budget is limited, but not impossible. To get what I
wanted, I had to go over my budget. I have not regretted that. It
was money well spent. Do check out your educational discount. You
may be able to get a new machine with it cheaper than a used one.

Good luck.

Put the Cat in the Book

2005-05-10 Thread Peter Saint James

I finally got around to installing Tiger on Monday in my
Powerbook. I learned a few things that might benefit others:

--I used the "upgrade" method, figuring if it didn't work well I
could wipe it off and start over using a different method. It worked
flawlessly. I can't remember an easier major software install. All
except a few settings carried over perfectly. It took a little less
than an hour to install. I tried all the software I can think of and
found it all working without problem.

--When I clicked on Mail in the dock, it bounced once then
nothing happened. I had heard about several people who had problems
with Mail and was concerned. In a fit a genius, I opened a Finder
window to Applications and found two listings for Mail. I clicked on
the newer one and it opened, everything in tact.

--I was prepared not to like the new Mail layout, but putting
the mailbox list in a panel rather than a drawer works better because
it opens and closes easier.

--Spotlight indexed my system at about a gig a minute. I'm
impressed with this speed.

--One of the first things I did was close the security hole by
setting Safari to never open anything it downloads.

--As others have reported, system seems zippier. My monitor
display improved enormously. It's much sharper and brighter with
truer colors.

--Dashboard seems like a toy but an interesting toy, something I
could have fun with. It may even have potential to be useful.

Overall, I like the the improvements. I think I'll get my
hundred bucks worth.

Your supposition would seem correct. I can see why one think that.
It seems like one would not have need for such buttons. When one has
them, however, they prove to be handy.

They were not my usual way of going through a list, but if I was doing
something with the mouse anyway, I could easily get the next message
without having to move my hand to keyboard.

For example, I might open a mailbox of stored messages looking for a
certain one. That's a mouse gesture. Then to go down the messages in
that mail box, using a button is easier for me than clicking on each

Mail also does not do something related that I miss from Eudora and
that even Entourage does. I want to open a message in a separate
window, read it, then open the next message in the same window using a
keyboard command. Mail has no way to do this that I can find. I was
thinking of trying to find or write an AppleScript to do this. Perhaps
Automator will have a way to do it.

There is a program running. I encountered this when trying to install

If you double click on the listing in Activity Monitor a dialog box

That program will start again next time you boot.

Color Wierdness

2005-05-01 Thread Peter Saint James
I was running iTunes with the visualizer on. When I quit everything
on the screen had a grey tint to it. All the backgrounds that were
supposed to be white were then grey. The desktop pix had a grey cast
to it. Every app has grey menu bars. Etc.

When I restart the system, the grey goes away.
I'm running OS X 10.3.8 on an Aluminum Powerbook with a gig of ram.
Any ideas what's going on and how to keep it from happening?
TIA

If you do it right it'll look somehwat like this:
the-pismo:~ johnson$ cd /Users/johnson/Programs/tnef-1.3.2
Hit return.
Now close the finder window of the folder.
Now type cd .. and hit return. That moves you back up the directory

the-pismo:~ johnson$ cd /Users/johnson/Programs/tnef-1.3.2
the-pismo:~/Programs/tnef-1.3.2 johnson$ cd ..
the-pismo:~/Programs johnson$
now type:
sudo rm -rf
If the folder name has spaces, enclose the name in double quotes, like
this:

sudo rm -rf "Folder from Hell"
You will be asked for your admin password, and perhaps offered a bit
of advice about being polite with other people's files, if this is the
first tiome you've run sudo,

The folder should be deleted.
typing ls then hitting return should show that the folder doesn't
exist anymore (The finder may still show it, sometimes updates are a
bit slow)

the folder seems to be opened but when I drag to it I am told again

European Powerbooks

2005-04-14 Thread Peter Saint James
Here's a question for those folks that skip back and forth across the
pond.

What are the electrical supply differences for European Powerbooks?
With current being different there, is the whole machine different, or
it just the powersupply different? Can one plug a European powersupply
into a US Powerbook and get it to work properly without damage?

It would be nice to simply get a different powersupply rather than
have to carry around a heavy transformer.

Headset problems

2005-04-12 Thread Peter Saint James

I'm experiencing trouble using a headset for a language program. I'm
trying to determine whether the problem is with the program, with the
headset, or with the computer. I suspect the headset, but I'm not
sure.

The program is Rosetta Stone. I'm using an economical, no-name USB
headset. I have a Aluminum Powerbook running OS X 10.3.8 with a gig of
ram.

The problems:
--Sometimes the computer slows way down. The disk drive stalls,
stops and starts.

--It records my voice slow and plays it back at regular speed,
making me sound like Alvin the Chipmunk. This denies me benefit of the
program's analysis of my pronounciation.

I have tried a different headset which uses IMic. I still get the
voice distortion problem but not usually the other.

I have more than one of these programs. Some run in classic, one in
OS X. The ones in classic seem to exhibit the second symptom while the
one in OS X seems to show the first.

These things don't seem to happen when using the built-in mic, but
that's useless since all it picks up is the noise of the computer.

Any ideas? Anyone using Rosetta Stone or some other program and
having similar problems?

Phones, iSync and PowerBooks

2005-03-15 Thread James Calderbank
Hi All,
I have been using iSync to sync my AlBook to a Palm Tungsten T, a .Mac
account and a Nokia 6600 phone. All works fine (although sometimes a
little shaky). I now have a newer Nokia phone but it is still Symbian
based as is the 6600. Problem is that the Bluetooth setup on the
AlBook will only allow it to be set up for modem use, not for iSync or
address book integration.

Whilst I understand that the phones are diffferent, as iSync is based
on the SyncML standard, I would have thought there would be a way to
get this going.

Has anyone got "unsupported" phones working with iSync? Or has anyone
found an alternative to allow iCal and Address Book to sync to newer
phones from the Mac?

Any comments/ideas/etc would be gratefully received.
