So I'm pretty sure the reason lies elsewhere. I think I may have some
kind of hardware problem, so I'm looking into that.
Suggestions on how to diagnose the OS 9 boot process are welcome.
Mikael, I'll suggest some obvious ones, even though I'm sure you've
tried 'em.

1) Maybe the drive is about to go bad (if it's an LG) and it just is
coincidence that the CDs won't boot.

2) Are Mac OS 9 drivers installed on your hard drive? I know that's
almost automatic for most people, but I do recall that that was a
choice when I put Jaguar on my hard drive.

3) Maybe the CDs all have very slight (marginal) flaws on them, and the
one Pismo's drive is pickier than the others?

I do not always have IC up and running (don't need it to connect), but

(like with in OS 9's control panel... OT?/PPP?) can show me if there is

anything out to the mail server (yes), and 2) if the mail server has
responded (no, or ve sllloooww in getting back to my computer).

Glad you haven't had to use SBC/Yahoo's tech support yet. First, you will
have to wait a while just to get through (am growing to hate automated

60something KBps. When I was working for an ISP company earlier, we
learnt the lesson very quickly and ALWAYS informed customers about the
realistic speeds they would get from a given connection... otherwise
things got rather nasty rather quick.

Maybe in your country, but it appears companies in the U.S. love to put
some 'weasel words' (like 'up to...') in their descriptions, and figure
that's enough to ward off any lawsuits (maybe their legal depts. told
them?).

I've had troubles with SBC/Yahoo, especially over the past several months
(have been with them since Oct. 2003) where the connection is flaky. For
example, Internet Connect will say the connection was terminated for lack
of activity, when I'm not actively browsing or sending email or
downloading. Or, I'll try to send an email out (with Internet Connect's
window open to watch the activity) and I see the initial (contact/request
to the ISP's mail server?) sent out and apparently acknowledged, and then
the connection just sits... until it times out. And on downloads I have
seen the rate fluctuate - a lot! (even down to single digit Meg. rates)

So your experience may be satisfactory, but not everyone else's has been.
Part of the reason I am NOT guaranteeing that I will stay with SBC/Yahoo
when my initial agreement runs out in Oct. 2004.

YMMV.

Recent problems with Help Viewer (10.2.8)

2004-07-10 Thread James Rohde
I had been using Help Viewer fine until about a week or so ago, when I
found that when I tried to start Help Viewer (at first, from within an
app to see its docs), Help Viewer would appear to start up but then
'unexpectedly quit'... The window for Help Viewer would get about where
the barber shop pole (striped progress bar) was going, and
'Retrieving...' would appear, but then it just quits.

I've tried searching Apple's Knowledge Base, but no luck there. I've
found apparently 1 or 2 others in the Discussion forums had the same
trouble under Jaguar, but their suggestions didn't help (trash the
Preference file - com.apple.helpviewer.plist). With some further testing,
BTW, I found that Help Viewer won't start up under *anything* - under
Finder, under other apps, nada(!).

Has anyone else run across this problem, and if so, how'd you solve it?

TIA,

Jim Rohde

Another possible reason is, have you saved any files on the desktop which
were close to the original location of the hard drive icon? If so, I've
found that the Finder (in various incarnations of the Mac OS (8/9/X) will
move the drive icon if there is a file too close to where the icon might
go.

If that's what happened, move your files away from the corner (or

Well, hopefully you'll get a 12Gb disk instead of a 12Mb disk :)

Yes, the first partition will have to be 8Gb or less. It makes the
most sense to be 8Gb. 12Gb will work for OS X and 9 but you might
want to consider getting something larger so you have plenty of room
to grow in.

As was pointed out by Bob, you actually want to set the first partition
slightly smaller than 8 GB (like 7.83GB or something a bit smaller than
an actual 8GB). But I'm with Clark that if you can afford a bigger drive,
go for it!

On 5/24/04, Bob wrote:

I don't how other list members will feel about it. But I would
suggest installing OS 9.2.2 on the second partition (see below
regarding the first partition). That way you will be able to boot you
PB from different partitions, which can be handy in a number of
situations (i.e. you can't repair a boot partition).

If you do decide to install OS 9 on the second partition, **be sure**
to tell Disk Utility to install OS 9 drivers when you format and
partition your drive.

And I'd second Bob's suggestion - I have my second partition set for OS 9
(with OS 9 drivers on it), for the reasons he gave. Amazing how quickly
these drives start filling up...

gamepads. But it just might work with a keypad as well, It ought to
worth a look-see.

Good Luck.

Good suggestion, Bob, but I've already tried installing it. I'd used the
MacOS 9 version of USB Overdrive (works great there or even under
Classi), and downloaded the OS X version of USB-O, but it doesn't help
with the keypad under Jaguar and the Apple Calculator. My (IBM)
2-button-and-scrollwheel compact optical travel mouse (under $30 on
clearance at my local BestBuy) works fine without any drivers, and the
keypad will work in other apps (like TextEdit, AppleWorks, etc.).
However, it won't work in the Calculator that Apple makes.

Maybe I'm just hoping for too much. But then again, this wouldn't be the
first time Apple didn't follow their own guidelines for software. ;-)

But thanks for the suggestion. Maybe someone else will come up with
something that will make Apple's gizmo work.

Numeric keypad drivers for my Pismo's Calculator (Mac OS X)?

2004-05-14 Thread James Rohde
I have a Targus 'portable' USB numeric keypad (Model No.: PAUK001 VER
2.0) which I bought through a local office supply store. It has worked
great under MacOS 9.0 up through 9.2.2, but now that I'm running Jaguar
(10.2.8) I've noticed that Calculator doesn't recognize input from it.
The light above the Num Lock key does light up, so I know it's getting
power fine, and AddressBook/TextEdit/other programs recognize the input,
but nothing I type on the keypad shows up in the Calendar program. Is
there a workaround or driver for the keypad (or for Calculator? I used to
like using the OS9 Calculator to figure a total and then paste it into
another program, but it looks like the new Calculator is finicky with
this keypad.

I have searched Targus' site (no luck, and they haven't responded yet to
my email) and a couple of Mac OS X apps sites (I'd have to check my
browser history, but I think SourceForge was one of them), but nobody
seems to have USB drivers for numeric keypads.

I think I recall that Apple (finally) re-wrote Calculator almost from the
bottom up in X, but I'd think they would realize that some of us would
want to use a keypad with it.

Any and all suggestions/help appreciated,

Jim Rohde

But some sites have sprung up where people have taken their own photos,

Panther some room to breathe. I also only have 192 megs of RAM in
the Pismo. AS soon as I have the $$$ I am going to add more RAM and
get a bigger internal hard drive. If I can get my OS X setup off my
iMac and onto the FW drive (easily doable according to answers here),
I can then sell the iMac to generate some money towards the Pismo
improvements.

Or - if you're somewhat technically inclined - you can swap the bigger
drive into your Pismo after you have installed Panther onto it. Then (if
it's easy to pull the bigger drive from the case) move the 10 GB into
either your external case or another (if you have to trash the case from
the bigger drive to get it out.

Even if you stay with the external drive in the case as is, there are
some nice cases out there which are easy to put your 10 GB drive into
(OWC, MacResQ and others).

Yes, under Jaguar also. Due to a problem with some of the internals on my
Pismo, I had to install Jag onto my new drive (after I partitioned it),
and it will boot Jag or MacOS 9 off the external FireWire (by picking the
partition - can hold down Option key and select which partition, or use
Startup Disk to choose). And, you can boot Classic apps running MacOS 9
off a different partition from your MacOS X one (or I know you can under
Jaguar).

If yes, a follow up question is if I can use Carbon Copy Cloner to
simply move my present OS X to the Firewire drive and then boot from
 there.

Yes.
Glad Edward answered that one for you (I would have suspected the same).
Putting my .02 in for those who might be wondering about Jaguar (which is
currently cheaper to buy than Panther - or will be until Tiger comes out
for sale).

Need assistance getting new HD recognized on my Pismo

2004-04-09 Thread James Rohde
I recently got a Toshiba 60GB and installed it in my Pismo (which has
been out of action for a while - another story...). I was going to
install MacOS X.2.3 Jaguar onto it (DVD in the Pismo's DVD/CDROM drive),
and it started up okay. But, it doesn't recognize any other drive besides
the install disc.

So I figured I needed to start up with my original Pismo (9.0.4) install
or restore CDROM(s). However, when I try to boot up with either of those,
I get as far as the startup screen and it freezes about there (at least,
the drive stops spinning, the pointer isn't visible and I get no response
from moving the trackpad, clicking the mousepad button, etc.).
Occasionally, I get a bus error message and a choice to Restart (but
clicking on that button doesn't do anything, and I have to do the
three-finger salute to restart.

I have an external FireWire/USB case with my Pismo's old 10GB drive (and
9.0.4 instaled on it), but I get no further than the startup screen with
that - not sure if it's completely recognizing/loading the system files
from that. Is there a keyboard command to force the Pismo to start with
the OS on the Firewire drive (or would I be better off trying to use the
USB cable instead?)?

Getting frustrated and hoping there's a way to figure how to get things
resolved (short of a big expensive bill for sending it off).

TIA,

Jim Rohde

MacOS X.2.3 install from DVD on Pismo?

2004-04-04 Thread James Rohde
I recently heard that some of the newer 'Books use a DVD install disc
rather than the CDROM of the full retail box (I'm talking about Jaguar
here - just running a little behind). I've seen one of the DVD(ROM?)s
offered at a good price, but am wondering if it should work on my Pismo.
Has anyone attempted/installed from these (all-on-one) DVDs?

The disc appears to be the grey color (OEM?) like the eMac CDROM sets
that OWC has been selling for a while, and I think it's originally from a
PBG4-14 inch. Can the DVD be used in my Pismo's DVDROM drive, or does
anyone know *for sure* (actually tried it yourself, successfully or not)?
Not 'a friend of a friend' anecdotal, but actual, first-hand experience,
please.

Also, if it indeed can mount on the Pismo'a drive, can I backup the DVD's
contents to (a couple of) CDROMs on my burner (after making a disc image
from it, I'm sure)?

Any and all personal experiences you can share will be quite appreciated.

Thanks,

Jim Rohde

G5 PBooks revisited

2004-02-16 Thread James Rohde
Saw this in the OWC e-letter today and thought of our previous discussion
on G5 PowerBooks and how soon they might be abailable:

---
snipped here
Looks like faster G5s are soon to be rolling on out. And they'll
contribute
less for heating and reduce the need for A/C too! While the first IBM G5
processors Apple is now using in PowerMac G5s are based on
130NM(nanometer)
die technology, the next speedbump will come from 90NM technology
production. Already in use with the Xserve G5 2.0GHz machines, these 90NM
based processors use less power and generate less heat too, which is how
they can now use them in the Xserve chassis and likely will later bring
about G5 PowerBooks too! IBM is getting full production online and that
certainly should bring us the next G5 speedbumb very soon.
One good article on the 90NM Technology links to several more at The
Register http://eshop.macsales.com/link.cfm?id=8802-5431 .

Along the lines of firewire enclosures, anyone have a recommendation

looked recently. I'm aware of the usual suspects (newegg, owc, etc.)
but if someone has a recommendation for a great drive at a great price
I'd love to hear about it!

I bought OWC's FireWire USB version of this (FireWire only) Mercury To
Go enclosure:

http://eshop.macsales.com/Catalog_Item.cfm?ID=3420Item=OWCMOTGFW

(I think mine is called the FireWire To Go Pro model). I was going to buy
the above one, but had my Pismo die, had to use my (Rev. A) iMac, which
has only USB (and, I needed some files that only were on the Pismo's HD).
Installing the drive is pretty simple, but I'm not sure it's reversible,
if that makes a difference for you. It's a clear enclosure with a blue
grain-of-wheat size 'power-on' bulb in the front (if you've ever worked
with lighting on model railroads, the size of light is really familiar).
Neat thing about the blue bulb is that when the drive is being accessed,
the light flickers, so you have a bonus mini-strobe if you like disco...
;-) (just kidding there).

Anyway, back to the enclosure - it comes with cable (or both cables, for
my FW/USB one), a leatherette/vinyl case, and the AC adapter (which may
be optional depending on how many other devices you have on the chain).
All of it fits in the vinyl case and is pretty easy to carry with your
laptop.

I think OWC's FireWire (911 Oxford chipset) enclosure is currently around
$80, but I like the looks better than a lot of the other enclosures out
there. Check it out and see what you think.

Not sure if this works on the Wallstreet, but I know on later model like
the Pismo, if the CPU daughtercard (does WS have one of those?), if the
card is not fully seated, the CPU connector pins don't make good contact
and you get problems with booting.

If the Wallstreet has a daughtercard for the CPU, make sure it is fully

I have used regularly the antivirus and defrag on my powerbook for over a
year now and occasionally the doctor and this is really the first time it
messes up (it was Utilities 6.0.3 for OS 9) and it messed up a freshely
set-up partition with no fancy installs on it (FileSaver started already
to report problems even before I could switch it off as I do usually right
after a fresh install). I'd like to hear some opinions and what are the
possible alternative for disc maintenance and repair?
Part of the difference is that DiskWarrior repairs the directory entries
and creates a new directory in a new location. Norton works (IIRC)
directly on the directory (so if it crashes in mid-corrections, you're
out of luck, for example).

My problem with Norton was it would repeatedly find problems, and also
Filesaver kept giving me conflicts with other extensions under MacOS 9.x.
I believe others have reported on this list problems with having
'repaired' a drive, but DiskWarrior still finds problems.

Others can chime in who have direct experience (rather than my
secondhand) with Disk Doctor and other Norton Utilities programs.

There are also guides on Other World Computing's site to find which

Look on Apple's site for CIP - Customer Installable Parts and PowerBook

Yes, they would definitely work. Maybe the reason there is no bid is that,
at almost $70, they may be a bit on the expensive side, or not a real great
deal.

I did a few searches on eBay and found a 30GB currently at $62, a few 40GB
around $75, etc. Might be the reason why nobody bid so far...

That, and that - especially if 1) you're ripping your CDs with iTunes, 2)
you are running MacOS X, and/or 3) you want plenty of storage and a quick
drive - this drive is no faster than the drive that came with your G3
(Pismo and maybe even earlier) and only twice the size, so it's not that
great of a deal.

I have found that each time I get a larger drive, I think it's big enough
for my needs and yet (year or two later) I soon find the drive getting
filled up. So from my 10GB (which actually is about 9.6-9.8GB usable) I
expect that my next drive will need to be 60GB. And from posts on this
list, there is a big difference between the 4200rpm drives (which tend to
have only a 2MB buffer) and the newer 5400 or 7200rpm drives (and the
better ones of these have an 8 or 16MB buffer, which makes them much
quicker - less going back to the drive). YMMV, of course.

I am considering buying the following drive from Googlegear.com

making sure this is close to the one reported, if not the same. It is
a bare drive. How problematic is that? This is the first laptop drive
I have purchased so my knowledge is clearly limited:

IBM Hitachi Travelstar 40GNX 20GB ATA-5 2.5in 5400 rpm mobile drive

Thanks a lot.

FWIW, that site is now:

http://www.ZipZoomFly.com/

While the Travelstar is a great drive (they show it out of stock tonight
on that site), is the size large enough for your needs? If you will be
ripping/downloading MP3s in iTunes, you may find the drive filling up
rather quickly. My original 10GB on my Pismo did, and I am now looking at
a 60GB Toshiba (16MB buffer, as opposed to the smaller buffer - 2MB? - on
the comparable Hitachi/IBM one).

Consider your space reqeuirements for now and a little into the future. I
find that in the past I have underestimated how much drive space I
needed, and in MacOS 9.x, I turned off virtual memory. When I go to MacOS
X, I will need extra space for VM, since X doesn't allow you to turn
Virtual Memory off and uses it continually (I understand).

YMMV, HTH,

Unless Clyde meant you use the glue gun to put a big round glob in place

Re: Virtual PC Update

2003-11-14 Thread James Rohde
On 11/13/03 6:59 AM, Kelly Johnson enlightened us by writing:

I think you guys are missing the boat on MS's intentions. I think it
is a simple matter of them knowing that a significant number of mac
users, given sufficient experience with windows, will become
comfortable enough with it to ditch apple. They've lowered the price
already, which to me shows they want to lure more mac people into using
windows. That's all there is to it, I think.
But again, that's one person's thoughts on what Microsoft might/might not
be intending... Unless anyone here wants to claim to be a corporate
mind-reader, we don't really know.
To paraphrase a very old radio show's phrase:
Who knows what evil lurks in the hearts of Microsoft?
;-)

The reason I say this is that I am a fairly typical user, and this is
what happened to me. I used windows in VPC, got comfortable with it,
became irritated with apple for a few reasons, sold my mac, bought a
pc, bought another pc. For the difference in money, I can live with a
pc now. I bought a pb12 because there truly was nothing else pc or
otherwise that could compete (sony vaio probably the closest), but I
wouldn't buy anything apple again, if it doesn't provide comparable
value in its hardware (osX isn't enough nicer than XP to warrant the
price differences for me). All because of VPC. kj.

But again, this is one person's conjecture as to how many other users
are/aren't likely to feel/think/act as you do. Back to guesses, which is
all any of us can do on the topic of motivations for buying/not buying
Apple or other companies' products.

But thanks for your thoughts. As for me, I do get frustrated with Apple
at times, but don't see any significant draws to switch to Windows of any
kind (and I've used most versions since Win95).

 Any info would be appreciated.

Gordon, I wouldn't feel you have to backtrack if the Lombard under X
works and does what you need with your usual programs. I plan on
upgrading my Pismo (which came with 9.0.4 and now has 9.2.2 on it) to
Jaguar (or maybe Panther) as soon as I can. Often, Apple comes up with
improvements in later OS versions which run fine on older systems.
Another example - I also have the iMac (Rev. A), which came with 8.1, and
which now I have running 9.2.2. Now if I got the Harmoni upgrade with
faster processor and FireWire (plus a larger hard drive), I'd be looking
to put Jaguar on it, too.

So don't hold back from using newer OS versions on your Lombard. If it
works and runs quickly enough for your programs and needs, that's the
final test, right? :-)

The last time I checked on Powerlogix site, the G4 upgrade was no longer
available, as, according to Powerlogix, the 900MHz G3 was way too popular to
continue offering the G4 upgrade. Unless you have another place that still
has them in stock, of course.

I wonder (anyone out there know?) if the upgrade would help as much with
Jaguar/Panther, since aren't the graphics chips on another board than the
'daughterboard' which has the CPU? If the graphics chipset is not
upgraded, I expect that will be some kind of slowdown factor (since the
graphics chipset affects the Quartz rendering (or lack of).

If anyone has done a G4 upgrade (or talked with a manufacturer of same),
you might speak about if it does/doesn't improve Quartz rendering under
Jaguar/Panther. Anyone know for sure?

First, I think most lawsuits (including probably the current Apple one)

the claimants.

But after that, I find it a tad two-faced of Apple that they will support
Windows 2000 for iTunes and the Music Store (an OS which is much older
than MacOS 9.x), but not Mac users running MacOS 9.x. As I wrote in
feedback to Apple, it's like telling those who haven't been able to
afford the hardware and software upgrades You'd be better off buying a
Wintel box so far as being able to access the Music Store. And yes,
there's some inaccuracy in that analogy, but it is arrogant of Apple to
provide support for an older Windoze OS when they choose not to support
MacOS 9.x users. It's like a slap in the face, IMHO. And I suspect the
main reason is that Emporer Steve wants to force more MacOS 9.x users to
upgrade and line Apple's pockets. As I said in my feedback, I may just go
find a used copy of Jaguar and NOT line Apple's pockets out of mine.

Making the switch to OS X (yeah, I know...)

2003-09-19 Thread James Rohde
I've been dragging my feet on jumping from 9.2.2 to Jaguar and will
likely make the switch this month or next. However, a question or two:

1) Where can I find a compatability list of minimum versions of
(commercial) software programs that will run under Jaguar? I have some
considerably older versions and want to figure into my budget how much
I'll need for software upgrades (in addition to a larger hard drive for
my Pismo).

Some of the programs I have include these -
Adobe Illustrator (7.x)
Adobe Photoshop Elements (1.0)
Adobe Photo Deluxe (2.0)
Accordance (3.0)
Fontographer (4.1.4)
MOTU Freestyle (2.31)
Alsoft DiskWarrior (2.1.1)
(also have Plus Optimizer, but I know it's not yet ready for X)
Iconographer (2.0.1)
Interarchy (trying out 6.2)
Mozilla (1.2.1)
Netscape (7.0.2)
Palm Desktop (2.6.3)
PGP (7.0)
Quicken 2000 Deluxe
SwapTop (1.7)
Webshots Desktop Lite (1.0.2)
URL Manager Pro (2.8)

plus I'll be getting either BBEdit Pro and/or Tex-Edit Plus,
Konfabulator, Candy Bar, Fruit Menu, Drop Drawers, GraphicConverter,
Safari, and maybe some others.

I have the combined AppleWorks (6.2.5/6.2.7) version and will be using it
and Claris Emailer (2.0v3), along with possibly iCab (2.9.5).

Is there a place I can find which are the minimum versions of these that
run under Jaguar? I seem to recall that either MacWorld or the Macintosh
Bible used to have a list like that, but I'm just not finding such a list
in my Googles.

2) Has anyone used Discribe for making DVDs on a Pismo (successfully)?
I've seen some external CD/DVD burners and wondered if I could make DVDs
using my Pismo. I think I had read that iDVD had speed requirements, but
didn't know if Discribe could work on systems slower than the iDVD needed.

Any and all help appreciated,

Jim Rohde

the back of the door (that little 1 to 1.25 long one), but I cannot

long as I have either the CDROM/DVD drive or my VST Zip 250 drive in the
bay, but if I want to use the weight-saver module (or when I get a second
battery), there'll be this gap in the rest of the bay opening.

Can anyone help me get it back on (short of an expensive trip to the shop

Battery problems

2003-07-31 Thread James Rohde
Well, my problem is slightly different from the post by Emma - my
PowerBook (Pismo/2000/FireWire) battery suddenly will not hold any
charge. It started when the power went off here few days ago during a
storm. Forgetful/foolish me, I kept going instead of immediately
unplugging the AC adapter/charger. Well, a little later I get the
shutting down message and it _immediately_ goes down (split second)! I
unplugged the adapter and the plug to the PB, and went to a local
bookstore for a bit, to await power coming back on.

After the power got back on and I had plugged things in and started the
system back up, there was no red in the battery indicator on the menu bar
(OS 9.2.2), none of the bars in the Battery Control Strip (for showing
the battery charge) were filled, but it did show the unit plugged in. Had
to use the Date/Time CP to call up Apple's clock server and reset the
time.

I'm still trying to piece together exactly what happened and why. Given
that the date went screwy after the power was shut off to the unit, I'd
say the PRAM battery has no charge (maybe even is toast). But I'm not
certain - was that why the exp. bay batter went down, or did the exp. bay
battery cause the PRAM battery to fail? I did the PMU reset (shut down,
press the reset button on the back, wait 5 seconds, start back up), but
no change. The rechargeable battery in left exp. bay is a BTI I got just
over a year ago (July 1, 2002), but pressing its button doesn't even give
me one lit LED on it. Right after the power went out, I tried and only
the first LED flashed, briefly.

So short of having another PRAM battery to swap in and check (meaning
I'll have to buy one for - it looks like - $50/60), should I expect that
I will have to shell out another $150 (give or take, depending on the
make) for another battery, possibly *plus* get another PRAM battery? I'm
going to send a copy of this to BTI and MacConnection (where I bought the
battery) and see what they suggest, too. I'd hoped for about two years
life out of the battery, since my original Apple battery lasted about
that long. But if I have to buy another battery *every* year, that's
gonna get really old...

Or are there other things I need to try first (I'm not counting the
apocryphal bang the battery on the side of the dumpster routine I
recall helped one person a while back on this list)?

Seeking Help,

Jim Rohde

Hi,
Our iBook 700 running 9.2.2 has developed the strangest error. On
restart/boot, it gives a date time error message at finder launch that
says the time zone is invalid. It also turns off Appletalk.

Anyone heard of this before or know of a fix? I've searched but not found
anything.
Thanks!
Michael
However, I have had that problem without the PRAM battery needing
replacement. In my case, I had St. Louis listed as a city in my time
zone, which was one of the choices given in the Date and Time control
panel. This after a while, led to the Time zone is invalid message
(possibly connected to the Location Manager, since the error messages
began after I added some locations in it). After I changed the city in
Date Time to Chicago, it went away. I think after I had (for other
reasons) to re-install my system, I was able to select the St. Louis in
DTime again without getting the error message.

I found it puzzling that one selection from Apple's choices in Date
Time gave me the error messages (for any period of time), but another
selection in that same list would not.

Bummer, Dude, You're getting a Dell!

2003-07-19 Thread James Rohde
Got this in SmallDog's Kibbles and Bytes e-letter. I think it pretty much

Jim

Homeland Security Awards $90 Million Contract to Microsoft; Microsoft
admits critical flaw in nearly all Windows software.

or

What is Wrong with This Picture?

The Department of Homeland Security has awarded a five-year, $90
million contract to Microsoft to become the department's primary
technology provider. Under the contract, Microsoft will supply desktop
and server software to the newly created department, which has merged
parts of 22 different agencies into one entity.

The agreement delivers licensing coverage for about 140,000 desktops
and will help the department to establish a common computing
environment, Homeland Security said in a statement. Dell was selected
as the reseller, to provide the day-to-day management of the enterprise
agreement, it said.

And in a Related Story

Microsoft acknowledged a critical vulnerability Wednesday in nearly
all versions of its flagship Windows operating system software, the
first such design flaw to affect its latest Windows Server 2003
software, Associated Press reports.

AP reported, Microsoft said the vulnerability could allow hackers to
seize control of a victim's Windows computer over the Internet,
stealing data, deleting files or eavesdropping on e-mails.

ìThe disclosure was unusually embarrassing for Microsoft because it
demonstrated the first such serious flaw in the company's powerful new
computer server software, billed as its safest ever, reports AP. The
software is aimed at large corporate customers and was the first
product sold under a high-profile 'Trustworthy Computing' initiative
organized last year by Microsoft founder Bill Gates.

At the product's launch in late April, Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer
declared the new version of Windows to be a 'breakthrough in terms of
what it means, in terms of its built-in security and reliability,'
reports AP. The flaw, discovered by researchers in western Poland,
also affected Windows versions popular among home users.

Any bright ideas as what the problem is and how to fix it?

My 3 year old pismo (OS 9.22, 382 Mb Ram, stock 20Mb HD) has stopped

drive spins up, spins down about a second later and that's it. Checking
in sys profiler shows 'no media' and the eject button on the unit still
works. I've tried with a few CD's, pulled the drive out and reseated it
but no joy. However, it happily reads DVDs with no problems.

Model is LG (DVD-ROM DRN8080B rev LAB8) with driver version 1.4.7.

I have not loaded any new software or tweaked the hardware for a long time.

My workaround of using fetch to copy from a linux box over the network
is rather painful and only works with mac disks.

Suggestions gratefully appreciated.
Pete.
Pete, you possibly have the dreaded 'LG dying' problem (which I had
shortly before my original warranty ran out). The LG model of drive has
documented problems with failing way too soon (the Matsushita drive
doesn't appear to have the problem). I had similar symptoms when my drive
started going south.

Since I'd guess you're not even covered by AppleCare, you may be out of
luck (if you are still - even barely - within your AppleCare warranty,
RUN your Pismo to the closest Apple service provider for an exchange of
the drive. Heck, call Apple first to ensure that they know of the problem
occurring within your warranty!).

From my own and others reports of how Apple handles the replacement, you
may get another (possibly refurbished?) LG drive, or if you get really
lucky, you may get the Matsushita drive. My replacement LG drive has been
working fine so far (Thank Heaven for that!).

1) Which model of PowerBook (Wallstreet, Lombard, Pismo, etc.) do you

2) How much RAM in it?
3) MacOS you're running (9.2.2, X.2.6, etc.)?
4) Any new software installed since last time you successfully used the

Any word on these two drives?

2003-07-07 Thread James Rohde
Hi all,

I've noted some comparisons in this list previously about hard drives in
the 40 GB size range (and how performance compares, depending on the
drive cache, etc.). Recently I found these two drives which seem almost
like they might be very similar. Anyone had experience with (or closely
looked at the specs somewhere on) either or both of these?:

Toshiba MK6021GAS 2.5 60GB 9.5mm FDB Notebook HDD

Toshiba 2.5 60GB Fluid Bearing 5400rpm HD 6/06/03

I'm hoping to find the best deal I can for a 60 GB size drive to go in my
PowerBook 2000 (Pismo), and leave myself enough room for growth (and
virtual memory) when I switch to MacOS X (yeah, yeah, I'm not a bleeding
edge, early adopter ;-)

TIA for any info you can pass along,

Simpler way to get the Torx 8 (which is the size you'll need on a Pismo)
- go to your local Sears store, and get just the Torx-8 screwdriver
there. Their Craftsman one has the lifetime warranty on it (unless you
try to lift the Hulk with it and bend it through misuse... ;-)

That T-8 screwdriver, a small Phillips screwdriver, and (suggested, but
optional) a plastic or nylon flat-bladed gizmo (need it in only a couple
of spots in the disassembly, and not often even then) will take care of
most all your repairs, upgrades, etc.

News for those who *have* to use the Dark Side at work...

2003-06-26 Thread James Rohde
Hi all,

Saw this on the NewtonTalk list, and thought it would be useful info for
any G-Books listers who have to use Wintel machines and software at work,
but have Macs at home.

Subject: [NTLK] [OT] iChat integration with Outlook
...snip...

Discovered a feature in Outlook XP today that prevented me from having
to write my own AppleScript. My issue was that I wanted to have my
Outlook (work) calendar synched up with iCal, which has multiple
calendars, Work being one of them.

Turns out you can pick a calendar event in Outlook XP and select as an
action Forward as iCalendar. I chose that and used my personal e-mail
address, which my PowerBook checks/manages. When the e-mail arrived I
clicked on the attachment, and it comes up and asks which calendar in
iCal to add it to. I chose my Work calendar, and voila! There it is in
iCal, with all the info and such intact.

Thought some of you synchers would want to know, especially those who
like me are Windows by day, Mac for life.

Re: MAC BATT Re: Pismo Battery dead

They're part of a national chain, but I doubt it extends outside of
Canada. But I'll bet any battery specialty store would be a good place

So what's the rate of exchange currently, Steve? Just checking and
wondering about my original Apple battery which is sitting in the box my

and handling, plus possibly import fees, customs, etc)

Hey, it might be more affordable, if we can find someone (in the States
or in our northern neighbor)!

I'd be interested in hearing (off-list) from anyone who finds a place in
the U.S. (Midwest, if possible) who does this kind of repair/replacment
work. Thanks for mentioning it, Steve!

Software Airport Base Station Range

2003-06-12 Thread James Rohde
Hi all,

I have noted the thread on setting up a WiFi network without using a
hardware Airport Base Station. My question is: how does the range with
that kind of setup compare to with a hardware ABS - how far away can you
be and get good connections, etc.? Anyone who has had the ABS/hardware
setup for a little while, knows how far they could go, and then switched
to software only (and how far could it reach with software only)??

Thanks in advance for the info,

Pismo logout stopped working

2003-05-30 Thread James Rohde
I have a somewhat similar problem to Jeff Hubatka's - my Pismo (384MB,
9.2.2, 10GB) has stopped being able to logout from the Finder. It will
give me the dialog that tells me that if I don't do something, it will
auto-logout in 90 seconds, but regardless of if I wait for it to log me
out, or just click on the button to log out immediately, the Pismo won't
logout. If I shut down, I do have to login through the Login screen like
usual, but the only way I appear to be able to log out is to shut the
Pismo down.

I think it used to work to logout a while back (still under 9.2.2) - 3
months or more, and since then I've had to reboot from CD in order to
remove/de-activate Multiple Users CP (due to a keyboard problem at the
time which prevented me from typing certain characters in my password),
but I then went back and re-installed it.

Any clues why I can logout only by shutting down now?

TIA,

Jim Rohde

G3 unit?

Or does anyone have the correct one (I don't know a model # off hand) cheap?
Thanks in advance.

If that's the same one as the Pismo (PB FireWire), they are hard to find
right now. I needed one because my (2nd) power supply had died recently
(the one I got after the original Yo-Yo adapter died). Both (IIRC) lasted
about a year and a half (actually, I think the first one may have gone
just within my original warranty). This time, I ended up paying more for
the adapter, about $80 (plus 2nd day shipping), because the places which
showed lower prices were out of stock.

Please post if you find a supply that has them in stock and at a better
price.

Thanks,

So tell me about your lab. I used several and had B+ results overall

very few covered all the usual bases I needed (weddings/candids,
