Re: Wi-fi card

2006-02-03 Thread Kenneth Vann
I just tried it in a PB 3500 Kanga (OS9.1) and
I've got lights there so I guess it does work. I just can't figure out how
to get it to show up on the 2400 in OS 9.

Hello All.

I have been following this thread for a couple of days, and I am of the
opinion that you have not installed all of the Airport software, or some
thing that your installed is bad.

First off, go to this great site and read how to do a manual install of
Airport v1.3.1. Only v1.3.1 will work on the 2400.

http://www.alksoft.com/projects/unsupported_airport.html

Second, with the software installed, you should have an AirPort selection
in both the AppleTalk control panel, and the TCP/IP control panel. If you
don't, then something is wrong. Even if you have AppleTalk turned off, set
the control panel to the AirPort Card.

If your install is successful, then when the card is in, it should pop up
on desktop as AirPort PC Card.

Make sure that any network you are trying to connect to has encryption
turned off. Only use the encryption once you have the hardware working.

If at all possible, install a new OS on the laptop with the clean install
option. I have seen many problems solved by starting over with a clean
install.

One other item, I have had some PowerBooks just refuse to work with
wireless. The solution for them is the Farallon or Proxim version of the
Skyline card for Macintosh. I have never had a PowerBook that this software
would not work with. The only down side is that the card only supports
64bit WEP.

If you do get it working, please let me know what the final solution is.

I hope this info helps.

Hi all;

I have a 1.08hr mp3 file that I'd like to split into tracks. It's a
live recording I made locally.

So, the thing about multimedia is- anything you do with it takes
time :) and I'm short on that!

I have Audacity, and I can extract pieces to individual mp3 files,
but that will take a while. Is there a better way?

I have Toast 5.2.3, nothing newer, would a newer Toast or Soundjam
let me take the whole hour-long track, and insert breaks at certain
timepoints?

Thanks for thoughts.

iTunes Wallstreet with OS 9.1

2005-07-31 Thread Kenneth Vann
Hello all.

I have a problem and would like your help.

I am trying to fix up a Wallstreet II, (OS 9.1, 64mb ram, 8gb hard disk)
and use I tunes v2.0.4 on it.

When I installed it I got an error message that says my hard disk and built
in cd ROM drive does not support digital data extraction from internal
audio cd's.

When I manually import music into my I tunes Library, I get the following
message: Your computer does not support digital data extracted from
internal audio cd's. Digital data extraction has been disabled. The import
button is grayed out.

I can add music to my I tunes library if I hook up a portable FireWire
cd/r. I assume I should be able to do same, if I hook up a portable SCSI
cd/r or cd.

Has any one run into to this problem? Is their a way to use the cd module
for the Wallstreet with I tunes?

I am not looking for the ability to hook up to a iPod, just rip and listen
to some music on my laptop while I work.

Thanks All

Upgrade Orinoco OEM card, Was Re: Pismo wireless questions

2005-07-26 Thread Kenneth Vann
Would it be possible to use the Airport Base Station to up upgrade a OEM
version (Dell, Sony, IBM, ect) of the Orinoco Silver Card?

I am assuming that one would need a Snow Base Station. Perhaps using a
Graphite would upgrade an OEM card to one that is listed as a Silver card.

The Orinoco software will list the card as a Gold/Silver or third party.

Any info or links would be helpful. I have both a Graphite and Snow I can use.

Thanks

Yes. You can upgrade it to 'Gold status that way, although getting it

I'm pretty sure the modem port on my Ti 400 is going. Anyone have a good

enough, it might just force me to get a new 'book!

Don

Can you try a PCMCIA modem? I picked up a Zoom PCMCIA v90 modem new in box
off ebay for $10. Downloaded the mac firmwae update software and its off an
running.

I use it in a Wallstreet where my internal modem wont work. FYI, I did
replace the internal modem in my Wallstreet, and tested the origional and
replacement modem in a different Wallstreet. Both internal modems worked
fine, but not in my Powerbook. I went to a PC Card modem instead of
replacing the logic board. Works great for me.

Found a old Supra 56k Flex some time back, found the firmware updater and
flashed that one to V90 for a friend to use. He still uses it.

Not all PC Card modems are Mac compatable.

Zoom still makes new PC Card modems with CCL files for Mac in v90 and v92.

Earthlink has just upgraded their dial up in my area to support v92. One of
these days, I am going to try that.

I guess the responses to my post sum up the the core question.

Which card brands will work BOTH under OS9 and OSX?

Also, I don't have Tiger installed yet either, so wondering if there is
an app out there (like the Tiger Widget) that gives you signal
strengths under Panther?

Thanks for the ideas. Dave

Hi Dave.

The Cisco 340 and 350 series of cards work under OS-X and OS-9 with the
Cisco software. Also the Dell TrueMobile 1100 Series is an OEM of the Cisco
340. I have flashed a Dell card with the Cisco Firmware.

The Cisco software has a feature like the Classic Stumbler, which lets you
see all available wireless networks.

All of these cards support 802.11b only. I don't know of any card that will
work native with AirPort software in both OS-9 OS-X.

Follow the links on my Wireless FAQ to the Cisco pages with software and
ROM information for using these cards on a Mac.

Wallstreet wont charge

2005-06-12 Thread Kenneth Vann
Hello All.

I thought I would pass a long my solution for my Wallstreet II (PDQ) that
was not charging the battery.

After replacing the charge card, power card and other parts, I found that
the RF shield on the right side hinge of the PowerBook was just touching
the outer shield of the power plug, when the AC power supply was pluged in.

When I removed the AC power supply, the withdraw of the plug would pull the
shield back into proper position. The shield is a small piece of copper
tape with a glue backing. With age, this glue dried out.

Sealing the shield to its support with some contact glue solved the
problem, and the PowerBook now charges fine.

The moral to this story: Read the repair manual before taking it apart.
This symptom and the repair was in the manual. I just did not catch the
problem because every time I had the book apart, the shields seemed to be
in place.

I hope someone can learn from my mistake.

From: Pacer

Fellow PowerBook-philes,

I am attempting to get an Orinoco wireless card working on one of my

The problem so far: It will not detect my Linksys access point using WPA
encryption.

I am wondering is this is because I am using WPA instead of WEP
encryption. I can not figure out if there are WPA setting options on the
card's software.

Has anyone else run across this problem?

Sincerely, Pacer the Loon Here we go 'round the wirless net, the wireless

Hello.

The Orinoco cards do not support WPA.

You will need to use WEP. Then set your router to do MAC addressing, that
will keep the freeloaders off.

Re: Wallstreet charge problems

2005-04-27 Thread Kenneth Vann

I'm reasonably sure that a *brand new* battery should charge in its
intended PowerBook without any major glitches in the process.

Your new batteries could be bad. Mine were.

I went through two brand new batteries that would not charge. From two
different vendors.

On my Wallstreet, I have had 3 APC batteries, and 2 from PowerGears.com.
All since January of this year.

I am now waiting for a RMA from PowerGears to replace it with a third.

I have not found any supplier with a battery the same quality as the ones
Apple made. And as far as I can tell, Apple does not sell batteries for
this computer, unless you are in California. Then they have to sell you one
per state law. I am hoping that the batteries from APC are better quality
than most replacements. So far, this third one is working great.

I have been told, (but not tried one), that the Newer Tech line of
batteries are of good quality.

The best way I have found to test the battery is to use a second
Wallstreet, and if one is not available, to use a VST battery charger. The
charger does a self test on the battery, and if their is a problem it
flashes its red light.

I wish VST had released information on what and how it test, but they have
not, so all you can go by is the flashing red light. My expierence is that
this charger has been a good way to tell if batteries were good or bad.

Apple had a utility called battery reset, which you could use under OS8.6 -
9.x, but it has been my expierence that this utility may not work on all
third party batteries.

The advice others have given about trying the battery before replacing
parts in your Wallstreet is correct. If all else fails, purchase a Apple
brand battery used off ebay to compare all other to.

Wallstreet Modem Not Recognized

2005-04-27 Thread Kenneth Vann
Hello G Books Members. I have some questions.

Last week my Wallstreet II would no longer see the internal modem.
Cannot select the internal modem with the Modem Control Panel. The Apple
System Profile, says no modem installed.

I purchased a replacement modem, and installed it. It still wont work.
I borrowed a Wallstreet II from a friend, and tested both modems in his
laptop. Both work.

Well, now I think the problem is in the Logic Board, or what ever part the
modem plugs into.

Anyone experience this type of problem? If so, how did you fix it?

If it is the Logic Board, is it worth replacing, or should I use a PC Card
modem?

By the way, I am running OS 9.1. The PRAM Battery is dead, so I have to
replace that. But I don't think that would cause the problem, would it?

All info, appreciated.

Re: Looking for an Airport Card

2005-04-13 Thread Kenneth Vann

Great. Tks. I want to experiment. I have a Wallstreet running 10.2.8.
I have a hunch that the Belkin card which works in your Aunt's Lombard
might work in a Wallstreet. Also I would appreciate what card version
(located on the bottom of the card e.g. VER.1101) and driver were used
 (Airport vX.XX or other).
 dklj

Belkin has changed the chip set in the wireless 802.11g card. The newer
card (released about a year ago) does not work with the Airport Software.
You need software from Ralink Technology Inc.

Ralink Technology has drivers for the PC/PCI/USB wireless adaptors that use
their RT2500 Chip Set. Supports OS X.

Some PCI/PCMCIA cards that use Ralink Chipset RT2500 are:

* Asus WL-107g [RAlink Chipset] Cardbus Card
* MSI WIFI 802.11g PCI Ralink chipset MSI [PC54G2]
* MSI WIFI 802.11g PCMCIA Ralink chipset MSI [CB54G2]
* E-Tech Wireless 54Mbps PCI card Model: WGPI02 RT2500 Chipset
* E-Tech Wireless 54 Mbps PCMCIA adapter Model: WGPC02 RT2500 Chipset
* ALFA AWPC036 802.11g PC Card Ralink chipsets
* A-Link WL54H Chipset: RaLink RT2500 (rev 01)

Link to the drivers download page on my Wireless FAQ site.

Also at bottom of page, link to vendors whos 802.11g card works with
Airport Software under OSX.

Re: Source for Wallstreet battery?

2005-04-06 Thread Kenneth Vann
I had problems getting a battery that worked well, but that problem has
been solved.

I have gotten good bateries from APC (it took three times) and from
http://www.eagleimports.com (it took two times, but the problem was
compunded by problems with there phone, and internet provider (Quest
Telephone)).

Eagle imports is on ebay with better prices than from there web site.

I will buy from both again.

I am satified with both batteries.

Do you need a PRAM battery?

Re: Wallstreet Orinoco Card wireless

2005-03-20 Thread Kenneth Vann
From: Debra Platt [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Subject: Wallstreet Orinoco Card wireless
Date: Thu, 17 Mar 2005 13:33:46 -0500

I have a Wallstreet running 9.2.2 with an Orinoco Silver card that I am
trying to get on a wireless network. I got a Pismo running Panther to
work, but I am having no luck trying to figure out the problem.

I have a Belkin wireless router with 128 bit encryption selected. It
works without any security enabled, but when I enable the 128 and
entered the hex keys, it recognizes the network and I get a signal, but
I can't connect to the internet.

Any ideas?

The Orinoco Silver only supports 64 bit WEP. You will have to set your
router to 64 bit WEP or upgrade the card.

You may also have to put a 0x (that is zero x) in front of the WEP key in
the Orinoco Software.

Re: Pismo wireless

2005-03-10 Thread Kenneth Vann
Date: Tue, 8 Mar 2005 23:22:48 +
From: Bruce Ryan [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Subject: Pismo wireless

Dear Listers

Can I tell you a shaggy dog story and then ask for some advice,
please? (If not, please just delete this mail!)

Got myself a 400MHz Pismo recently. Love it to bits for the look
alone but I want to go wireless with it. (I have a wireless router
that's accessed by my flatmate's PC and - via ethernet - my G4/400)

Fell for an eBay advert for an 802.11g cardbus card that apparently
would work with a mac - and won the auction. Here's the rub. The
manufacturers say it will work with a mac but only under OSX. OSX is
slow enough on a G4/400MHz with 384MB RAM. I hate to think how slow
it'll be on a G3/400 with 128MB. (I do have an extra 512MB and a 30GB
hard disk arriving soon.)

So, do any of the assembled multitude have a clue if the card
(Buffalo technology WLI-CB-G54A-3) can be jinxed into working under
OS9?

Will OSX be as slow as I fear, even with the bigger hard disk and more RAM?

Is the delay in going wireless my karma for wanting to go faster than 802.11b?

Many thanks

Bruce

Hi Bruce.

As far as I know, the card wont work native with Airport Software under the
Classic OS. However it may work with third party software from IOXperts.com
or Macsense.com. I am not sure as to weather these third party software
vendors support the 802.11g standard with their software for Classic OS.
You will have to ask them.

You can always get Lucent, Agere, or YDI wireless card and have native
Airport Support on the Classic OS. Minimum OS would be 8.6. These cards do
not have native support under OSX.

See my FAQ page for more info on wireless in the Classic OS.

Re: Wallstreet Battery

2005-02-20 Thread Kenneth Vann
A final update regarding my quest for a working battery:

APC Returned my phone call, and is sending out a replacement battery.
They are paying the shipping cost both ways.

APC provided replacement battery 3 days after that phone call. It Charged
up the first time I tried it. I am now going to do a calibration and see
how much time it will last.

Eagle Imports agreed to send replacement battery. Will pick up the
original battery that tested dead. Will pay for shipping cost for both
batteries. I am waiting on replacement to test. If replacement battery
does not work, they have agreed to take it back, pay the freight cost,
and not charge a restocking fee. Eagle Imports believes that one or more
cells in battery is dead.

I Received a pre paid mailer to send defective battery back to Eagle
Imports. Replacement battery arrived 4 days after I mailed first one back.
After charging and calibration it last about 2 1/2 hours with all energy
savings turned off, and playing a QuickTime movie looping continuously.
Quite acceptable. I want to note that Eagle Imports honored their terms of
sale after I was able to establish communication with them. The
communication problems stem from Quest Telephone Co, and a move of their
business at the same time I placed the order on their web site.

In earlier conversion with Other World Computing about their brand of
batteries, they advised me that the charge card in the Wallstreet could be
week, ie: not strong enough, to handle the larger capacity batteries.
As both batteries have charged up ok, this does not seem to be a problem.

Also both batteries test good in the VST external charger. Both batteries
are a larger capacity than the Apple origional battery, it seems the VST
charger is not calibrated for that, and charges them up to when three of
the lights on the fuel gauge are lit. At that point, the VST Charger
indicates a full charge by giving a Green Light. Perhaps If I left them in
the charger overnight, they will go to full charge. I have not tried that
yet.

Both charge up fully in the Wallstreet without problem.

In the end, it appears I have received 2 bad batteries in my quest for
replacements. I now have two good batteries.

Thanks for all the suggestions I have received from you.

Re: Wallstreet Battery

2005-02-09 Thread Kenneth Vann
Just an Update regarding my quest for a working battery:

It would be helpful to others if those being difficult
or providing substandard service or materials are
clearly identified. What dealers did you deal with?

APC was direct from them. I am waiting for return phone call.

APC Returned my phone call, and is sending out a replacement battery. They
are paying the shipping cost both ways.

The other was from Eagle Imports Intl, 2757 So 300 West Suite # D
Salt Lake City, UT 84115. This is the company that has not responded to
my repeat phone calls for a RMA. Will let you know how it goes with the
charge card company refunding the charge.

Eagle Imports returned phone calls after 7 days. Says problems caused by
move from Salt Lake City to Logan UT. Says Quest telephone company has
messed up their local POTS and 800 service and their voice mail service.
Also Quest provides DSL to company and that has been messed up. I was given
a direct phone number to the rep I talked to, so to bypass voice mail.

Eagle Imports agreed to send replacement battery. Will pick up the original
battery that tested dead. Will pay for shipping cost for both batteries. I
am waiting on replacement to test. If replacement battery does not work,
they have agreed to take it back, pay the freight cost, and not charge a
restocking fee. Eagle Imports believes that one or more cells in battery is
dead.

Contacted Other World Computing about their brand of batteries. They advise
the following: The NewerTech batteries are not compatible with VST external
charger. The VST charger's overcharge batteries. While my Wallstreet
charges the Apple Brand of battery, the charge card could be weak and not
work with a battery of larger capacity. Other World says the NewerTech line
of battery has a low rate of return, most all problems being with a
defective charger in the PowerBook or the use of an external charger. Other
World answered emails promptly.

Testing to be done: Will take the two problem batteries to user group
meeting this thursday. One other member has Wallstreet and I will test
batteries in his PowerBook. Will advise what happens.

I want to get my Wallstreet working reliably. I will use it in a dirty work
enviroment, and don't want to use a new PowerBook in such enviroment. I
currently use a PB1400 daily at work, (it has no problems) but I would like
to go to a larger screen.

Is their any way to test the charge card in the Wallstreet other than
replacing it with a new one?

By the way. The AC power supply for the Wallstreet is a new one of the YoYo
style. No problems with that.

Thanks for all the suggestions I have received from you.

Wallstreet Battery.

2005-02-05 Thread Kenneth Vann
Can anyone tell me if new batteries are available from Apple for the
Wallstreet PowerBook? Can anyone recomend a Apple service dealer in
Virginia?

I have had bad luck with third party batteries. The one I go in new this
week does not charge. Does not charge in a VST charger or the PowerBook.
Vendor does not answer phone calls, so I have contacted my Charge Card
company.

The APC one I got 6 months ago, does not charge in VST Charger or
PowerBook. APC does not want to replace it under their one year warranty,
as this would be the third one from them.

The Apple brand I have does charge in both the VST Charger and PowerBook,
but because of age, it only last about 50 minutes.

So, that means that the great deal I just got on E-bay for a new
Belkin PCICMA card and
router that is listed at the Belkin site as working with OS 10.2.6 and
airport 3.0.4, will just be going back on E-bay?

Dean

Belkin changed the chip set and did not tell anyone.I have seen some
reports of this. Its a cost thing. They can save pennies per unit by
changing chip sets. You may have gotten one that uses the Ralink chip set.
if so drivers are here.

http://www.ralinktech.com/supp-1.htm

Of cource that's not what you wanted.

As far as I know the Buffalo 802.11g card will work with OSX and AirPort
Software. Get the right one, a Buffalo has three different ones for
different price points.

There is a link to this card on my FAQ site.

Re: OT-trouble with webpages loading

2005-01-06 Thread Kenneth Vann
Snip

I can't even get the contact us page to load to ask PayPal whatssup!

If need be can anyone contact me offlist to help me fix this, its probably
something wrong with my settings...other websites load just fine.

Kristina

Hi Kristina, here is some info on why you are having problems. I originally
posted this to a yahoo group I belong to.

Paypal and its parent eBay upgrade their software (the new eBay 2.0) on or
about June 5, 2004. They no longer fully support Mac OS 9 browsers. Their
software is designed to work with Windows computers only. They wont admit
this, but that is what has happened.

Here is what I have found out that does not work with Paypal.

iCab, cannot change funding source, it gives you a new page asking to add a
new bank account. Unable to complete payments. Cannot send a trouble report
by their web based system, buttons dont work when you try to send the
report. Prior to this upgrade, iCab worked in all functions. iCab version
2.9.7 2.9.8

IE, pages dont load, buttons dont work, this varies from day to day as
Paypal changes the coding on each page. Unable to complete payments. Prior
to this upgrade, IE works in all functions. IE version 5.1.7

Opera, will work but I dont like it. Opera v6.0.3

Netscape, have have tried it, seems to work ok, but was advised by Paypal
support that it has problems also. Netscape v7.02

In eBay, iCab will lock up computer with large amounts of disk acitivity
(memory usage increases about 36mb per each open window or tab) when you
have more that 3 tabs open. This expierence was with a PB1400/G3/466
upgrade and OS 8.6 9.1 and a iMac/rev a, with OS8.6 and 256mb ram (with
iMac its about 5 tabs open before I get problems). With more than three
tabs open, it can take up to 5 minutes of disk acativity to open or close a
tab, as the computer starts uning VM.

The new Ebay 2.0 also included new and increased advertising for users.
When I created filters to cut down on some of the advertisments, ebay
started downloading 5k and 10k PDF files which were ads. I deleated the
filters and removed the PDF viewer in iCab to stop this.No other web site I
have been to has ever done this. Prior to eBay v2.0 upgrade this was not a
problem.

Its important to note that of all the browsers for the Mac and OS9 or
below, only iCab is still being upgraded. A good reason to suport shareware.

There are thousands if not millions of Mac users with G3 and G4 machines
runing various flavors of OS 9 or below. These users do not want to upgrad
to OSX, some cannot upgrade, but their Mac's are fully capable of surfing
the web. There is no reason not to suport these users.

This is not a problem where your machine is underpowered, this is a coding
problem. Please call Paypal customer service line and let them know you
want them to suport Mac's

PayPal US toll-free at: 1-888-221-1161 or please call 1-402-935-2107.

Avrage hold time 30 minutes.

If you are going to set up a ebay store, I would talk the some merchants
that use PayPal. Here is a link to a PayPal developer fourm. Discussion
about the changes in PayPal service that makes browsers unusable.

http://www.paypaldev.org/forum.asp?FORUM_ID=29

I would try to use Netscape v7 for your computer and see if it is any
better. I use it under OS 8.6.

Re: G3 AC adapter replacements

2004-12-31 Thread Kenneth Vann

Anyone who still has the small black rectangular power adapter that came with
the Wall Street and early Pizmo PowerBooks should go to this web site and get
a new one. They may discontinue the program any time now that they are
technically not supporting the Wall St.

http://depot.info.apple.com/

Victor

Hello all. I just returned two of them under this recall. It took about 10
days to receive them. As it was in conjunction with a CPSC agreement, I
don't think their will be any problem getting a new adaptor any time soon.

The recall covered the Model Number: M4402 adaptor, made by two different
vendors.

According to this page http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=16168

The adaptor was also sold as a compatable replacement for the PowerBook
1400, 3200 and G3. It is also used by the VST Chargers for these models of
computers.

I don't remember the service part number, but it comes in a padded mail
envelope with a new power cord. The adaptor does say Model Number M7332, on
it.

(If any one can find a article that crossreferences the M7332 with the
service number , I would appreciate it.)

The only problem I see is if you have more than two adaptors. The site says
they will replace any extra that you have purchased, and any that came with
a VST charger. But the site only lets you key in two serial numbers and
requires a serial number off a G3 Powerbook.

If you have the M4402 adaptor, by all means replace it under this recall.
While the replacement is not as small as the origional, its much safer.

Re: Orinoco Gold and TiBook G4

2004-12-18 Thread Kenneth Vann

From: Andrew F. [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Who is the vendor of the card? If its the Proxim card (or a number of other
brands) it may be of a newer type that neither the SourceForge nor the
IOExperts drivers support.

I bought a Proxim Orinoco Gold and had no luck with either, the card is not
built on the older chipset, and is sadly PC-only at present.

Andrew

Hello everyone. Before you purchase any Orinoco card to use on the Mac,
download the Orinoco Selection Guide.

Only the 8410-wd and 8410-jp (Orinoco Classic Gold Cards) support the Mac
under the Classic OS, and the Sourgeforce driver supports this card under
OS X.

PC Cards are price sensative and vendors do change chip sets in order to
shave pennies from the cost of manfacturing. A good example is Belkin
taking the 802.11g card which used the Broadcom Chip set and replacing it
with a Ralink Technologh Inc chip set. While there web site still list it a
Mac compatabe (using Airport Software under OS X) the new ones comming off
the assembly line are not and need aditional software.

I will see that this link is put on my Wireless FAQ site.

These all allow serial devices to be connected to USB

to be connected to legacy serial ports.

Ken

Would PowerPrint for Serial Ports help? Supports only the Classic OS.

Serial to Parallel printer adaptor.

Or you could combine a CardBuss USB card with PowerPrint USB and have
printer drivers for most any printer. Still, only works with the Classic OS.

Re: Lombard Recommendations

2004-12-10 Thread Kenneth Vann

On: Wed, 8 Dec 2004 Andrew inquired:

I just bought a used 333MHz Lombard for my daughter to
use, mostly at home, along with a new Orinoco Gold
card to access the Airport network.

First off, will the Orinoco card (Proxim - brand new)
work as an actual airport card, or should I start
hunting for drivers?

Snip

Andrew

If you have the new Proxim Classic Gold Card, Model 8410WD then under OS
8.6 to OS 9.2.2 it will work with Airport software. Other Proxim cards that
are new production wont work with Airport Software, but may work with some
commercial software.

Only 802.11b cards will work under the Clasic OS.

Older Lucent WaveLan, Lucent Orinoco, Agree Orinoco, and YDL Wireless cards
will work with the built in Airport Software under OS 8.6 to 9.2.2.

For use on OS X you will need third party software for the Proxim Clasic
Gold Card. Commercial or Freeware.

Or you can use a 802.11g Apple compatible PC Card from many sources, if you
put your PowerBook on OS X.

My personal opinion would be to use OS 9.x for a PowerBook for a young
child. Less tech support problems for Dad.

See my Wireless FAQ for more information. Links for all the wireless
software you will need.

Orinoco a/b combo cards wont work on a Mac.

Orinoco Clasic Gold, and others listed in section 3.1 will work on a mac

My second question is of less critical importance, but still related to
my Wallstreet: I asked G-Listers for a suggestion for a wireless PCMCIA
card for this and someone suggested an ORiNOCO would work great with
Airport Drivers. I bought a new one off eBay for less than $20 (!),
downloaded Airport 2.0.4 and installed it. When I plug the PC card in,
I get an icon on the desktop, but Airport doesn't recognize the card
and won't connect. Any ideas? I am thanking you in advance.

Re Wireless Driver

For all you wireless driver needs go to my FAQ page at

http://home.earthlink.net/~kjvann/

Your cards work with the Orinoco 7.2 driver under OS 8.6 to 9.2.2 and the
SourgeForce driver under OS X.

Earler drivers are available if needed.

Both drivers are free.

Ken Vann

Hi All -

We ordered two of the Roamabout Wireless cards from Wegener Media and now my
wife can't locate the install CD that we used to install the drivers on her
PISMO and I'm trying to put a card into a Wallstreet here in my classroom.
Of course her Pismo is running OS X and the Wallstreet OS 9 so she can't
just copy the driver from her HD and e-mail it to me and they don't seem to
be downloadable from Wegener's site. So does anyone have a copy of the OS 9
drivers for this card that they would be willing to e-mail to me sometime
very soon? I assure everyone that we have bought and paid for the cards in
a legitimate and upfront manner. No doubt she will find the CD as soon as I
get the drivers anyway! Thanks in advance for your help.

Wireless FAQ Now A Web Page

2004-09-16 Thread Kenneth Vann
Hello all. My wireless FAQ is now a web page. If you need to know how to
install wireless on a older PowerBook, check it out.

http://www.home.earthlink.net/~kjvann/

If you need to find drivers, technical docs, or have questions as to what
software you need, then you will find most of those answer here.

As always, comments and suggestions are welcome.

And a special thanks to all who helped with the links.

Explain the 802.11b Card Description

2004-09-08 Thread Kenneth Vann
Hello all. I would like to clarify what I said. When I said Marketing
fluff, I am referring to the fact that the RoamAbout card was still using a
term on the label that they had been using from the beginning of them
selling the card.

It has been many years since I did any serious work in the electronics
field, and things tend to fog up with age. The information that is
available on the web about how each OEM implements the features in a
wireless pc card is not complete.

I do know from Lucent documents that with v6 of the software for Macintosh,
the cards with the correct Firmware are WiFi Certified 802.11b.

The tech document is dated March 2000. So there is good posibility that the
cards offered for sale now, are of the WiFi Certified type.

Quoting from the Lucent Document

Added WiFi (Wireless Fidelity) functionality. This requires a firmware
level 6.04 in the PC cards. WiFi functionality ensures interoperability
with other 802.11B high rate products.

The key word is interoperability. I take this to mean backwards compatable.
My RoamAbout card has the WiFi certification logo on the front of the card
along with the notation of DS High Rate.

Every card I have except the Dell TrueMobile 1150 and the YDI Wireless has
the WiFi Certification logo. They all work with the Orinoco drivers under
OS 9.x.x. and all connect to the Base Station I have.

I think that if you buy the card from the vendor of you choice and it does
not work as advertised, they have an obligation to make it good.

My RoamAbout works fine at home with my Base Station, but just to make
sure, I will take it to the local restruant that offers free WiFi and see.

Just as a thought, prehaps I will take apart my Base Station and check the
Firmware in the card that is in it. Wonder what I will find?? I have a
Graphite BS and I know it has the Lucent Orinoco Silver card in it. I might
even put in a third party Silver card and see if the Airport software will
upgrad the Firmware or toast the Base Station.

Re: Wireless Drivers For OS 9 OS X

2004-09-07 Thread Kenneth Vann
Hi John. I beleave that is a Dell 1100 series card. I have one comming off
ebay and will be testing it with the Cisco drivers. I wonder if I can
update the Firmware to the latest version?

Did not see any firmware updates on the Dell site.

The best way to tell if its is a rebranded card is to check the FCC ID
Number. Of course, if it says Air-PCM-xxx on the back label it is a Cisco.
Both of the 340 series and 350 series were made without and with WEP.

I got a 340 new in box last week,(Air-PCM-341 with 64WEP) Firmware way out
of date. But all updates were on the Cisco web site. There software is not
as user frendly as, say the Skyline, but it sure works. Great tools for
testing the card too.

Will let you know if it works, if you want.

If you get a Cisco card or rebranded version, try to get the 350 series
(Air-PCM-352) That will have the higher output (20dBm) and WEP 128.

Best Regards

Ken Vann

Ken:

You might take a look at the Dell Truemobile cards. There is a
particular one, I forget which, that is a rebadge cisco card. I've
been tempted to get one and try it in my Powerbook.

Explain the 802.11b Card Description

2004-09-07 Thread Kenneth Vann
Hi Bob.
I beleave the DS in the card discription is marketing fluff.

If you look back at the Lucent advertising they were using all sorts of
words like Turbo, High Rate, ect.

The card is a OEM Version of the Lucent WaveLan. It is available with 64WEP
and 128WEP

The one you want will say the following part number on back. CSICD-AA-128.
That has the FCC channels in it with 128 WEP. Others are available for
Europe, Japan, ect.

Here are some links about the card.

While my keyboard is already heated up replying to other messages,
let me re-ask a question that I asked a week or so ago, but didn't
receive any replies to.

A couple of people have recently mentioned the Lucent/Orinoco WiFi
card available from http://www.wagenermedia.com. The card is
described on their web-site as a 802.11DS RoamAbout card.

What's a 802.11DS card? I know it's a wireless PCMCIA card. But
what's the DS stand for? And I've seen the RoamAbout description
before, but I'm not sure what exactly it refers to.

Thanx,

I think the terms DS and High Rate, are marketing fluff. Maybe back in 1997
it was the older standard, but now its is WiFi Certified as a 802.11b.

Check out this specification of the RoamAbout Card

http://www.enterasys.com/support/manuals/hardware/4062_03.pdf
Or the full product catalogue at
http://www.enterasys.com/products/product-catalog.pdf

The sample I have has the following Firmware:
Hardware: v4.0
Primary Firmware: v4.4
Station Firmware: v8.35

Every card I have tested so far had a Primary Firmware and Station Firmware
as listed above. The only one I have not tested is a Proxim Orinoco Clasic
Gold Card. I will borrow one next week and add that to my list. The
Firmware information should end up in my FAQ that I am working on.

Here is a snip from the last Firmware Update listed on the Proxim Wireless
site for the Proxim Orinoco Clasic Gold Card.

As you can see the Primary Frimware is almost the same. The difference
could be explained by the data in the flash rom which identifies the card
as a Enterasys RoamAbout. Or it could be somthing to do with the products
they build that the card goes into.

It should work in a 802.11b environment with out problem. It works for me
in my network.

Re: Wireless Drivers For OS 9 OS X

2004-09-07 Thread Kenneth Vann
Hi John.

Well I got the Dell TruMobile 1100 Series in tonight.

The back of the card was marked Cisco Systems, AIR-PCM340, then in small
print AIR-PCM342. This one supports WEP 64/128. Was New In Box.

It is a direct copy of the Cisco 340 I got last week.

Came with firmware v3.93. I upgraded it to v5.30.17 and it took off like a
champ. Good contact with the Airport Base Station I have.

In the Cisco Control Panel, the only difference I could see is the product
name listed in the Advanced Configurations selection,in the Status pannel.

The Cisco AIR-PCM341 list its Product Name as 340 series
The Dell 1100, AIR-PCM342 list its Product Name as PC4800B

Other than that, the cards work identical. Test with OS 9.2.1 on a
Wallstreet II (PDQ).

If you want to get one, check with the seller for the small print on the
back of the card. Make sure your get the 342 or 352 version.

The last digit on the number indicates WEP, with a
0 being No WEP
1 being 64 WEP
2 being 128 WEP

The 340 Series is rated at the same transmit power level as the Orinoco
cards (15dBm), while the 350 Series has a more powerful transmiter (20dBm).

By the way, the FCC ID # on both cards is LDK102038, so if you find another
card with this ID #, then it's a OEM of the Cisco card and should work on a
Macintosh.

Well, I guess I will go to the local user group Thrusday and show them a
Dell Wireless card in a Apple PowerBook.

Hope this information helps.

Wireless PC Card Compatability List

2004-06-27 Thread Kenneth Vann
Hello All, I have a request.

Listers who have Powerbook's which were not made for Apple's built in
Airport card, how about sending me information on the wireless PC card you
use.

I want to build a list of cards that are copies or clones of the
Lucent/Agree/Orinoco/Proxim cards that will work in older Mac's. I want to
be able to identify compatability by FCC ID number, and eliminate guesswork
when trying to purchase a new or used card.

If someone knows of such a list, or already has one, please point me to it.

Please follow the format of the Diamond card I listed below. Be sure to
include the FCC ID # off the card and what software you use (OS and
software to control the card). With the FCC ID #, I can look up the card
manufacturer and fill in missing information.

FCC id look up page: http://www.fcc.gov/oet/fccid/

It's possible that cards with different names, sold in different markets,
or private branded cards, will have the same FCC ID # and thus be supported
by the Airport or Orinoco software.

Please send all PC card information to me direct. In about 30-60 days I
hope to have a list of compatible cards for use on older Macs.

PC Card Information Example:

Card Name: Diamond Card
Web site: www.ydi.com
Vendor: YDI Wireless
Vendor Address: 8000 Lee Highway, Falls Church VA 22024
Vendor Phone: 703-205-0600
Vendor Part #: 012606/B
FCC ID #NM5-A2400S
Description: 16-Bit (PCMCIA), 128 Encryption, Rom#8.52
Compatible Drivers Under OS 8.x - 9.x: Yes, Orinoco
Compatible With Airport Drivers under OS 9.x: Yes, (Tested 2.0.2 2.0.4)
Compatible Drivers under OSX: Not Known
Compatible With Airport Drivers Under OSX: Not Known

Thanks to all.

Re: Wall Street, wi-fi, and OS 9.1

2004-06-15 Thread Kenneth Vann
Hello All. I have some questions too.

What is the last version of Airport Software that works under OS 9.1-9.2.2?

Can the Wallstreet support more that one type of wireless software at the
same time? I am referring to perhaps the Skyline and a Airport software, or
Airport and Orinoco software. Do you just change the stetting in the
AppleTalk Control Panel and change cards?

Are current production Airport Base Stations suitable for use on a network
that only has Macs running OS 9.1 or earlier?

Are their third party routers that have both ethernet connection, modem and
which will pass AppleTalk packets?

I have a friend who was advised to purchase a Orinoco Gold card (by CDW)
for her Wallstreet. I have been able to get it working but the software is
confusing for her. I advised her to try one of the Skyline cards, but she
has already spent $100 on this card. I would like to install the Airport
software and let her try it with out removing the Ornioco software. She has
tried the Skyline software on my PB, and likes it's simple interface, but
we are back to the money she has already spent.

She has cable, uses a Belkin router, and can connect to the other computers
on the wired ethernet side of router by just going to the
Chooser/AppleShare and pick the name of the other machine. With her
Wallstreet, she does the same thing, but has to put in the IP address of
the computers on the wired side of the router to connect. No problem
connecting to internet from any of her 4 computers. I have put a alias on
the Wallstreet of each hard disk she wants to connect to, and this seems to
solve the problem, but I was wondering if I configured the Belkin router
wrong? This was the first time I ever configured one.

My previous experience is putting wireless on old PowerBook computers for
use at a Mac User Group hot spot. ( I helped a retired gentlemen set up a
PB1400/117 OS 7.6 to surf on my Skyline card I loaned him).

Thank you.

Wallstreet Questions

2004-06-11 Thread Kenneth Vann
Hello all. I am working to get my new used Wallstreet II into shape. I
would like to thank all that answered my other questions.

Got a new one for you.

Can you recommend any brand (or company) for main battery? I tried some
from EBC Battery company in FL for a PB 1400 and they did not last a year.

The most I common have found seems to be from two mfg, BTI and something
called Hi Power. Doing a Google search shows that the same part numbers
sell for any where between $82.00 and $189.00. Both appeare to be made in
China.

I would be intrested in comments as to should I try to purachase a new
Apple brand battery, if its still available as a service part. I dont need
the 4 lights on the side, do I??

The other battery I have found is from OtherWorld computing. They have a
high power battery at 4500wh for $140. Comments??

Would it be posable to rebuild the existing battery? I have seen your
comments about doing a reset in open firmware, but how would you do this
under OS9?

Thanks for all your help.

Ken Vann

Wallstreet Questions -Firewire

2004-06-11 Thread Kenneth Vann
Recommendations for a Cardbus PC card that will let me use FireWire under
OS9. It does not have to be a speed demon, just reliable so I can connect
to a drive or other computer if needed.

What brand of card?
I would prefer with dongle as to clear a wireless card I all ready have,
but I am open to suggestions.

What software is needed?

Thanks for all your help.

Wallstreet EBM CD Rom Repair

2004-06-11 Thread Kenneth Vann
Hi Dan K.

Love your web page on EBM upgrades.

Got a question.

Is there any company that does repairs to the cd rom EBM for the Wallstreet?

I know you discribed the problems with upgrading this module, but I would
like to have a source for repair or be able to replace the drive should it
fail.

Thanks

Ken Vann

Questions about Wallstreet II

2004-06-08 Thread Kenneth Vann
Hello all. I have just obtained a used Wallstreet II (PDQ). I am using OS
9.1. Dont want to go to OSX yet.

Are their any alternet ccl files for the internal modem? I travel to a
place that has bad phone lines, and I need to force the modem to connect at
33.6.

I have a ccl for the iMac, and for a older supra v90 PCMCIA card that will
force the respective modems to 33.6

Any suggestions?

Ken Vann
