have to use the most insecure system, and as well I have to use a

My bank, Regions (formerly Union Planters here in Florida) TOTALLY
supports Safari, Firefox and OmniWeb as well as Internet Explorer.
Personally, I'd find a new bank. My wife works for them too. She
says the IT department, with which she works closely and is able give
input (she's a Branch Manager), strives to be compatible with ALL
browsers and platforms. They want everybody's business! Banking via
website lowers operating costs and also saves the customer money. Of
course Regions is one of the most advanced Banks in the SouthEast as
far as software and hardware. Though their systems run on Windows
Servers. I'd certainly seek out another bank.
I look at it this way, if they don't want to accommodate you, I
certainly wouldn't give them my business...remember, they're making
money off of you.

I find that with USBank, even when I log off properly in Safari
(even the latest one), I often get stuck in a loop where I just get
the your session has timed out screen unless I manually search
for and delete all USBank cookies. (It sure would be nice to have a
search feature within the cookies list!).

Some other banks or credit card sites give me a window telling me
my browser is not compatible, but if I click Continue it works just
fine.

Regards,

Harry Corsover

Follow up on that: AmEx's site works fine with Safari and so does
Bank of America. For that matter the state of Florida's website
works fine too. We have a thing called SunPass that allows you to
pass through toll plazas without having to stop and it debits via a
little box. Go to the website to put more money on it and I usually
use Safarinot one problem. As a matter of fact I do EVERY form
of financial transaction exclusively using the web. I haven't
written a check in years (about 5). Guess I've just been lucky
enough to do my transactions with progressive companies...oh, my
insurance company, Progressive, is totally Mac compatible.

Re: Website Compatibility (Stonyfield)

2006-02-19 Thread Tim Collier
If you can enable the debug option in Safari, you could select the
Windows

Microsoft Explorer user agent, which basically tells the website which
browser you use. I just tried it and had no problem getting in.
Initially,
before I changed the user agent, I got the same message but now it
appears

to be fine.

It's really a pity that developers are so lazy that they code for
only a
specific platform. The Internet was supposed to be platform and OS
agnostic
but the dominance of Windows and the constant push from Microsoft
with their
specific extensions to the HTML language has skewed the direction
of the
Internet and many websites only assume that you're running Windows
and using

Internet Exploiter...

You could email or contact them to let them know

Well put, but somehow, I don't think it's going to happen.

You've got it backwards.

I thought I would :)

MPEG4 and H.264 play in standard QT 7, but
MPEG 1 and 2 are part of a $20 MPEG playback upgrade, that isn't even
part of Pro, AFAIK.

Ah, ok. So Amber should be able to export to MPEG-4, and get his files
into QT?

MPEG-4 has been part of QT since QT6, which is on the ever-faithful
Lombard running OS 9.2.2.. Remember, iTunes requires the QT libraries
for playback and Apple's AAC codec is based on MPEG-4. If you don't
believe me, go into OS 9, find a .m4a iTunes file and change the
extension to .mp4, then open it. It'll work.

Thanks for the clarification!

it. Fine, I give in! I'll 'attempt' to bottom post out of courtesy
to the rest of you. I don't like it, but I like this list. I do not
plan to unsubscribe. Having my iBook and keeping it running in tip
top shape is important to me. This list has helped in that endeavor
as well as in with my Desktop computer (which I'm using now). And
you all of you who like 'sniping' at me...please stop! As Amber
said, there is a REAL PERSON at the other end of this email address.
Sorry if I express an unpopular opinion from time to time. I'm not
one to keep quiet when something bothers me. I don't plan to change

regarding top vs. bottom posting. I will conform.

Re: open source software and Macs

2006-02-02 Thread Tim Collier
Especially when you consider that Office by Microsoft was out for the
Mac before it was available for the PC. Microsoft has done some
great stuff in putting together the Mac version. I saw a site
promoting the new version that's coming out for Windows. Strangely
enough it has a lot of the features that the Mac version has had for
years. You know how when you open Word, you get that little Window
over on the right for formatting? Windows version never had that,
you always had to search and eventually find the formatting that you
wanted. With the Mac versionit's always been all right there in
the formatting window. Now, as I said, the next version for the PC
is coming out with something like the Mac version has had since OS
9. Office on the Mac is WAY better than Office on a PC. I've used
both. I'll take the mac version any day.

Re: open source software and Macs--Mac Word Processors

2006-02-02 Thread Tim Collier
Stupid question here: What would make you want to 'gift' a 1000 G3's
with Office? Gift them without and let the user decide what he wants
to use. And then there's always Appleworks. I've used it and like
it except there are some parts of it that I don't care for--like the
'database'. Also the word processor is strange looking (guess from
all my years of using Office), but it'll do the job quite nicely.
Also don't discount iWork 06. I purchased it and it's quite
impressive. They added a lot of features that should have been in
the original and the Templates are WONDERFUL! Another Word Processor
that I use a lot is Mellel...it doesn't get a lot of praisebut
it's the only Word Processor that I've come across that can write
Hebrew AND put in the vowels. It has the ability to switch from
writing from left to right to right to left (essential for writing
Hebrew). Mellel also has it's PC version by the same company called
Davka Writer.
Whatever happened to WordPerfect? I don't see much about that
anymore. Mind you, I only use OS X appsso, if there's an OS 9
version out there, I'm not aware of it. Keep in mind that if you're
just looking for a Word Processor and don't need Excel, PowerPoint
and Entourage (I don't use it--prefer Apple Mail app, iCal and
Address Book--as they all work together better than Entourage does
(my opinion))don't discount iWork. It's sleek and will
definitely get the job done all for only $79 and you get a PowerPoint-
type app with it called Keynote. Sorry for the length of this I
feel strongly and have experience with a lot of the retail Word
Processors for the Mac.

Re: open source software site

2006-02-02 Thread Tim Collier
I just posted a long response regarding Word Processors. But, as
soon as iWork 06 came out, I bought it. Pages is dramatically
improved over the 05 version. It definitely gets my vote as #2.
And, I do use it. If you're going to do an article with pictures,
etc, it's a LOT easier to use than Word. Apple did a really great
job and adding the little Excel-like additions was quite nice.
Keynote gets my vote over PowerPoint any day--I think it's wonderful.

Comparing MS Word to AbiWord is like comparing a BMW 750i to a Toyota

never use,

while the other is much more straight-forward in its approach.

Everyone compares open source word processors with Microsloth
Word. But there are cheaper alternatives too. I have glanced at
Pages, and it doesn't look too bad. What do folks think about
Pages? Does it have any serious gaps, compared to Word? One thing
I don't think it has are macros but perhaps i could live without them.

Re: open source software site

2006-02-01 Thread Tim Collier
Clarification here: you really replaced a program suite that you
paid $400 for with open source NeoOffice? Pardon my doubt here, but
Microsoft Office is the 'gold standard'. I can't imagine that any
open source would run as fast or offer as many features. Now I do
have to qualify this statement (critique) by saying that I've never
tried any of the open source software available and I would need some
pretty convincing evidence to get me to chuck out Office 2004 in
favor of something written in java and needing to have X11 added to
my computer. How about some real world examples. When I click on
Word, it opens in seconds.maybe 1 second (I just tried it)...does
the open source version do that? Bruce, you know I totally respect
your opinion, but this one has me a bit doubtful.

Re: security re: file sharing/networks

I totally agree on this one. I don't think the laws have caught up with the
technology yet. It's a matter of the (restating the obvious) the technology
having advanced so fast that legislation has not been able to act on the
legality of intrusion into somebody else's home network. Yes, a lot of people
have no clue about how to secure their networks. Right now, as I sit here
typing this, if I click on the Airport icon, I can see 3 other networks in my
area. 2 are secured as is mine. The other, it just calls itself 'linksys' is
totally open. I have been able to connect to the net with it and get my mail.
I wish I knew who this network belonged to, I'd certainly offer to help him/her
secure it.

Re: Internet on Virtual PC

2005-12-29 Thread Tim Collier
Actually if you read the documentation, it recommends that you run
VPC with 256 allocated. They say it runs best that way. Forget

I suspect something inaccurate.. especially since this happened to
both of us.

Thanks for your insights!

patches. I find it the slowest computing experience I have ever
had. Things take incredibly long, and sometimes so long that I'm
not even sure the mouse click registered.

I tried the site you mentioned (using their Dallas TX location)
and got 5772/973. I find this quite hard to believe, since it is
almost twice the rated speed I get from my Earthlink DSL service.
I then tried www.dslreports.com/stest and got 1579/315 from
LinkLine in L.A., and 1796/333 from Speakeasy in Seattle. The
latter two are believable.

Switching back to Safari (which takes several minutes, since VPC
seems to take forever to let go) I ran tests at the same sites:

Speakeasy Dallas: 2122/307; Speakeasy Seattle: 2122/308; via
DSLReports.com: Speakeasy Seattle 2062/312; LinkLine, L.A.: 2191/272.

My take on this is that the Speakeasy test in Windows must be
inaccurate, since even if Windows/IE has an advantage, I don't see
how it's possible to get almost twice the nominal speed my DSL
service offers.

Re: Airport Question

2005-12-25 Thread Tim Collier
The truly amazing thing is the actual stupidity you come across in
this PC dominated world when it comes to Mac Networking. Back when I
used PC's I used a wired network and I was really new to networking
back then. I even took a course on it at a local community college.
With that under my belt and a couple of texts to refer to, I went at
it. I bought my routers and all of my cat 5 cables and then the PC's
still wouldn't cooperate. One would see some but others wouldn't
see others. It took me weeks to finally get it to where I finally
have everybody able to share files and printers. When I was able to
afford a Windows NT server, that helped quite a bit.
Then I made the switch in 2001 and started going over to wireless,
obvious choice was wireless and networking has never been so easy.
Using only Apple hardware probably has made it a lot easier on me
than using 2nd and 3rd party equipment. Everything works right out
of the box and works with little to no configuration. As far as
wireless networking, Apple the top of the line. I would not consider
using anything else.

Re: Airport Question

2005-12-23 Thread Tim Collier
Plain simple truth of the matter is that Apple designed their Airport
base stations and the Airport Express to work with your Mac. The
Airport Setup software is designed to set it up in just a few simple
steps that rarely even require referring to the enclosed
documentation. Whether you use an original Airport Card or an
Airport Extreme or for that matter a third party card, setup is a
truly simple thing to do. I do not have any experience with Linksys
or D-Link but I did make the mistake of buying a Netgear as my first
attempt at wireless networking.
I had all of my Macs equipped with Airport Extreme cards and one with
an original card. I took the Netgear wireless router out of the box
and read through the manual and everything seemed straight forward.
I got the first Mac connected but that's as far as I got. None of
the others would connect. Of course the Netgear instructions assumed
that I had PC's but it should still work the same as for the first
Macbut no.
I called customer support and got a very unhelpful person at the
other end who told me that you shouldn't be using this with a Mac in
the first place. After several attempts and failures, I said thank
you and hung up. I packed everything up and returned the router to
CompUSA where I bought it. I went over and got the Airport base
station that I should have gotten, brought it home and set it up
myself. All done in about 15 minutes without having to call anybody.
I've extended the reach of my signal (didn't really have to, but it
made me feel better) by buying 2 Airport Express and distributing
them around the other end of the house. Adding them to the network
was also simple and I didn't need to call any tech support line.
And, my network isn't a straight-forward Mac setup either, I'll
describe below (sorry for the length of this post, but I want to make
my point):
Cable modem to Airport Basestation Konica-Minolta Laser Network
Printer connected to base station
Mac #1	G5 Dual 2 gig with Airport Extreme Card--Location Office with
the basestation
Mac #2	G4 Dual 1 gig with Sonnet Aria Extreme PCI card (shows up as
an Airport card)--Location Office with the basestation
Mac #3	G3 Blue White 450 mhz with Sonnet Aria Extreme PCI card--
Location Office with the basestation
Mac #4	G3 Blue White 400 mhz connected to Airport Express via
ethernet--Location Kitchen, Airport Express also shares printer and
set of speakers
Mac #5	G4 iBook 1.3 gig 14 inch mostly used in Family room served by
another Airport Express which shares a printer and speakers--it can
roam anywhere in the house without losing it's connection
Computer # 6 Dell Insiron 9300 17 inch with Centrino processor
mostly used in Family room but can also roam anywhere in the house
without losing a connection
So, on my simple Wireless network, I have access to 1 laser printer
and 2 inkjet printers and 2 sets of speakers (1 is my home stereo
system, the other just a simple setup with a sub-woofer). All of the
Macs can share files, nobody ever drops off, unless they're asleep.
The PC plays nicely although we had to play around and tweak Norton a
bit. Plus the whole network is protected with WEP 128 encryption.

Re: Airport Question

2005-12-23 Thread Tim Collier
Oh, I've been told that before. Like with BellSouth DSL, after one
of their outages and my modem appeared fully connected yet wouldn't
allow mail or safari to connect, they blamed the Mac and said it
wasn't compatible with their system and it was my fault. If I would
only use Internet Explorer I'd have no problems. Of course a few
short hours later, all was working fineseems like one of their
servers got ALL of it's services up and functioning or something like
that, at least that was their explanation for the problem. After
that, I cancelled service with them and started using my cable
company. What a difference! And there have been similar incidents.

As for Microsoft's Anti Spyware messing up your home

it's been the only thing that has been able to restore
full interent connectivity on some of our workstations
here dependent on an ASP connection. (Spybot and
Adaware wouldn't touch it.) Of course, it's a Beta

as a good and useful product.

Comparing the big three (Adaware, Spybot and MS),
Adaware is going to have to hit the bottom of my

run Spybot and MS and forego Adaware. It used to be
my favorite long ago... but now it seems that it finds

thats just my opinion.

I could go on getting into the whole Symantec

Living with Nature (was Reminder about Static Electricity)

2005-11-28 Thread Tim Collier
Ah, but there's no place like home. What did she do, leave it
outside? Or live in a house without AC? I can see that happening in
a case like that. Mold is a MAJOR problem down here. It does seem
to love to live inside electronics that 'live' outside. I saw a TV
that a neighbor 'used' to use out on her patio die after about a
year. We opened it up and it was full of all these pretty colors of
mold. Sort of changed her mind about bringing it back for warrantee
coverage.
But most electronics down here, if kept in an air conditioned house
(AC also de-humidifies) can live long happy lives. I keep my house
at about 74 degrees. Now lightening: yes, we are known as the
lightening capital of the US. A wise user NEVER plugs anthing!
directly into the wall.well nothing sensitive. TV's, sound
equipment, computers, monitors, routers, printers etc are all on back-
up power supplies or at a minimum a power strip with a surge
protector. Even still, a lightening storm fried 2 dsl modems within
a span of 6 months. Anyway, hopefully all of this goes to illustrate
to some new user on the list that you have to take care no matter
where you live. Weather conditions can render your precious,
expensive electronic toys useless. Take all precautions when it
comes to protecting them. Find out what others in your area do to
extend the life of their computers. Most of all, live defensively.

Best wishes for the holiday season,

Re: Apple Printer drivers

2005-11-14 Thread Tim Collier
You'd have a lot better luck if you installed the CUPS printing
system, lots of drivers available. And if it's not there, you can
get it from one of the linux sites. Practically every printer ever
made is listed. To check to see if it's already installed, open your
web browser and type localhost:631 and you should get a locally
served website devoted to your printers. If it's not, you can add it
from your OS X install disk.

If you have a second machine with firewire boot the PowerBook in
Firewire mode (hold T key). This will allow you to connect to
another machine via firewire cable. The powerbook will show up on
the other machine as a firewire hard drive. Hopefully you will be
able to transfer your important files.

You could also try fixing the drive using TechTool Pro, DiskWarrior

Surely, for about the same price, you could get a brand new CDRW
 module?

 Where would you recommend looking?

I shall now eat humble pie :) DVDROM/CDRW drives like the Sony CRX820E
do seem to be nearer the $100 mark, which I suppose makes $70 look
rather better if you want something that preserves the look of your Pismo.

Given the track record of those pismo drives, I'd think twice about
paying even $70 for a refurbished one.

I've had mine for 5 years now and it is still going strong.

Well, I think you've been quite lucky.

(btw sorry if my original response was rather abrupt; reading it back
now it comes across as somewhat tetchy!)

I'd say using a snow ABS is a *very* good reason to turn on the

Powerbook G4 diassembly

2005-07-12 Thread Tim Hodgson
 Hi all,

I'm trying to get to the HD in a PB G4 (15 Firewire 800 model), and I'm
stuck trying to remove the top case. I know there's a latch just behind
the DVD drive slot, but can I find it?! I've tried a variety of
dentist's pick-shaped devices (not having an actual dentist's pick) with
no success. If I had a better idea of what the latch is like it would
probably help!

Has anyone been here?

thanks,

Re: real estate situation

2005-07-06 Thread Tim Collier
Here's my 2 cents. Virtual PC runs very well but slowly on every Mac
I've ever put it on including my G5 iMac. At least on the G5, it
runs half way fast but on this 1.2 gig iBook, it's tedious at best.
When VPC (I have the latest version--7) is running, for all intents
and purposes you are using a PCbut I really think that you're
going to be sort of crippled trying to use it. As much as I am a
total MacAddict and even hate to say the following, I think it must
be said for you to be competitive. Get a cheap PC laptop for use at
work (there, I typed it and didn't explode). You can still exchange
information with it and your Mac. Good Luck in your new career.

Tim
On Jul 5, 2005, at 6:00 PM, Claire Hart wrote:

Possibly three weeks ago, I posted to this list that I would
probably be headed into real estate soon. I have since taken the
required courses and am waiting to take the state certification
test in a few weeks.

The company I will work with uses several pieces of software that
is Windows-based. No one has Macs. The real estate school I
attended confirmed that NO ONE in the business uses Macs. Much of
the computer use is for accessing things online, but some of it is
actually running Windows-based real estate applications which is
installed on each agent's computer. (Realtors are independent, and
therefore buy their own software, etc.) When I posted a few weeks
ago, everyone recommended that Virtual PC is the way to go.

Today I talked to the person that handles computer support for the
company I will be working for. (He is not in-house, but works
independently.) He says he has worked on Macs, but he doesn't
know what Virtual PC is, and he can't believe that I don't have
antivirus software running. I can tell that he has not WORKED on
Macs. He says that if he has to support my computer to keep it
current and to keep it virus-free, I will have to pay additionally
for his tech support. I told him that I've never in 13 years ever
paid for technical support. The last time I bought antivirus
software was for my 1993 Centris (no, that is not a car). In other
words, he doesn't understand my questions at all. I just want to
know if the software I will be required to use can run through
Virtual PC. He did tell me that the whole office runs on a
server. The word server is not exactly good news. I think that
the office has a staff person that installs everyone's software for
them.

After that phone call, I figured that the only thing I have to lose
is the price of Virtual PC. If it doesn't work, I'll have to go
buy a PC laptop. Either way, I'll be loading the same software
onto either my PowerBook with Virtual PC, or onto a PC laptop.

So, here is my request one more time: Is anyone out there selling
real estate, using current software that is written for real estate
agents, and accomplishing it with a Mac? Or do you know of someone
who is? Please, please, please respond if it is working for you.

Desperately,
Claire

Color StyleWriter 1500. The StyleWriter was never supported by OSX even though
I have it hooked to my ethernet network with another Apple product (Apple
StyleWriter Ethernet Adapter) which works great in OS9.x and earlier. Is there
any way to keep this as a viable printer on my network?

The LaserWriter has just recently become a problem and only because Tiger dose
not support AppleTalk. Dose anyone make third party software to support this
printer over an ethernet network? Or can I hook this computer into a print
server and go around the Appletalk issue?

Lastly I have several Macs that do not support Appletalk IP. One the Quadra
630(ATA), I have been using as a file server (small Mac that uses little power
when left on 24/7.) I would really like to see these in Tiger. Is there
software that will help: Timbuktu, VNC or another that will allow me to see
the hard drive and transfer files? Any suggestions may be helpful?

Opinion and gripe coming.

Ok, why did Apple decide to leave AppleTalk out of Tiger? I know it is an old
and wordy protocol but it has been the networking standard on Macs for 20
years. This legacy solves many a problem for small business and home owners. I
can understand that Apple wouldn't want to support third party legacy products
but these are all Apple brand and Apple created equipment and protocols.
Leaving Appletalk out is a slap in the face to long time Apple users who have
supported them with purchases over the years.

Personally, I think Apple should keep straight AppleTalk as an option as a
show of support for their long time supporters and businesses.

At the very least Apple should release Appletalk into the public domain so
someone can write an open source implementation for those who need it.

Re: DSL and storms

2005-06-14 Thread Tim Collier
The area I live in is currently being served by Adelphia Cable. But,
we got a notice in the mail a few weeks back saying that they are
being bought out by Comcast. There is supposed to be about a year
for the transition to take place but I 'think' I'll be happy with
Comcast.

MediaOne has the dubioius distinction of having the poorest
customer service rating of any cable company ever. Ever. It was
fantastic. Man I still shudder about MediaOne.

Regardless, I will be moving to Birmingham, AL which only has
Charter I understand. I had to deal with them in Athens, GA. They
are not as technically savvy as Comcast, nor do they know how to
run networks in general, plus they do not have as many nifty
features, but goodness ... it's like the difference between Sun and
Microsoft in cultures. Sure, I'd prefer a Linux or Apple kind of
culture, but at least it isn't an uncaring empire.

On an aside: Apparently Paul Allen does have a stake in Charter. Eh.

Still, business lines are expensive so I won't be able to run any
nifty home-made servers from leftover computers running everything
from NetBSD, OS 8.5 to RedHat 9. I plan on getting the DreamCast
an Ethernet adapter and turning it into something That oughta
be funny. If my Mac SE had a larger hard drive I might even
network it (G)

Good luck with y'alls DSL and/or Cable Modems and watch out

Re: Is Apple really moving to x86 architechture?!

2005-06-11 Thread Tim Collier
I've wondered if any of the people who are chiming on on this topic
watched the keynote address?
Though Apple is switching to Intel, is it going to be the 586 or
Pentium family of processors? Steve Jobs never said anything about
that.for all we know it could be a whole different processor.
These new Intel based Macs are still going to be running OS X. Do
you think Apple would use Windows?
To my experience, Apple products have always been TOP QUALITY. I
doubt that anything with their brand name on it will be anything less
that what they previously made.
Being an eternal optimist, I'm certain Apple will continue to make
quality computers that 'just work' as they always have. I will
continue to be an Apple customer for ALL of my future computer
needs. I do not see that changing.

My only gripe: the cord from the adaptor to the computer is barely long
enough to reach to the floor, so I have to put it on the desk. No big
deal, but the kind of thing Apple probably wouldn't overlook. (Then
again, if Apple had designed the yo-yo better I wouldn't need this

My wife and I each have an iBook, both purchased last November and
now both running 10.4.1. We have no issues with heat. Do you hold
the computer on your lap or on an unventilated surface?
In the past, when I first got this iBook, I used to hold it on a
pillow on my lap and yes, it got HOT. I looked into this and saw an
article about how most laptop computers need to be on a firm (so air
can circulate around it) surface. I bought a little tray at
CompUSA. Now, I use it on the pillow on my lap and the iBook stays
cool.
My wife has no issues with heat either, of course she leaves hers
sitting on a table and hunches over it (how she does it is beyond me
(looks really uncomfortable--but that's what she's always done)).

Re: iBook fixed + iBook Battery Exchange

2005-05-27 Thread Tim Collier
I already received my replacement battery. Still have to send the
original back but the enclosed literature says that I have until 2007
to do this. Of course I'm going to send it back next week.

Anyway, now my iBook won't spontaneously combust.

Hi all,

Again, I just have to thank so much for the information about the

been for this list.

Finally got my iBook back today, after being without it for 2
months! I
asked the shop if they could replace the battery while they had it,
but

they said I had to use the website. I thought I might as well get it
ordered, so it would be here when I got the computer back, but since I
needed the battery serial number, I couldn't do it. I wasn't very
surprised when I saw that my battery was indeed one of the affected
ones. I have reacted to how hot it becomes since I got the
computer. It

has become so hot, I could barely touch it. So I often used it on the
armrest of the chair instead of on my lap, so it wouldn't overheat
that

way. So it will be real nice getting that problem solved. I will
probably have a new one within a week or so... :)

They ended out doing a lot with my iBook; The repair report says:
Changed Logic Board, LCD, Inverter and LCD Cable. Tested 1 day, OK

I really hope they got it right now. While on the phone with them
earlier this week, I got the impression that they finally had got the
idea that the cable was a problem. I can't believe they didn't get it
earlier. I told them this 2 months ago, that I had a feeling that the
cable could be involved, because of me straightening the screen
when it
went black. Then I told them this over the phone plus by e-mail 4
weeks

ago, when they got it back for a re-call after they sent it back to me
with the same problem still there. This time they at least tested
it one

day, had it on and moving the screen multiple times to be sure that
there weren't any connection problem anymore. He said though, that
there
is a possibility that there could be a problem where it connects to
the

motherboard. I really hope that is not the case...

Now I can't wait to finally start fiddling with all the pics I
downloaded the day the screen went black! I only got to doing a bit
with
one, and entered it into a contest that afternoon, figured it was
worth

a try, even if it could be worked on more. Got a letter the other day
that the pic is in the semi-finals... The iBook seems really great,
much
better for playing with photos than the old Pismo. I can't wait to
learn

about using Photoshop, just tried it for the first time. Got myself a
book, that should get me started... :) Have to look online too, to see
if there are any how-to websites for Photoshop newbies...

Have a nice weekend!

Aase :)

So far, this has been the winning feature for me.

Safari is way faster--I mean that thing rocks. Although I am still

I've always used Safari. I've personally had no issues with it.
Although I'm still irritated that there is no per domain allow/
deny popups feature. That's the one feature that I miss from using
 Firefox

Mail is fine--I just wished there was next and previous
buttons AND some sort of an indication when it is checking the
mail (I know I can get the Activity Viewer but then I wished the
window would appear and then would disappear when finished).

I'm getting used to the new mail. I don't like how it looks
compared to the old one (looks too much like an add on
application). I would prefer to have my choice of where the folder
list appears like I did with Mail 1.0. There were times I wanted
the folder bar to disappear. I can't do that now.

Dashboard IS a toy. I have nixed it and went back to Konfabulator.
Why should I use two hands and press two buttons in order to get
the information that can easily be ready for viewing on the
 desktop using Konfabulator?

I use the F12 key to activate my Dashboard. I'm not sure that I
like the implementation yet. I would like the desktop apps to pop
up, but not gray out everything else that I have going on. It's
almost TOO separate from my workspace, instead of being an addition.

I did an archive and install on my machine, after making a bootable
backup to an external drive with CCC. However, if I get some time,
I'll probably clear everything out backup my home directory, and
format my drive and do a clean install. I know there are some
things on here that I'm not using any more and that should be
 cleaned out.

But Safari is great! Even better under 10.4. It's really nice to
use whatever browser you wantI've tried a few since switching
back in 2001 *from* the PC. First thing I did was trash Internet
Explorer.
Tried Netscape.slow and just too much there: mail and composer
and the kitchen sink.no thanks.
I even tried Firefoxit didn't give me the ease of use of Safari.
So, it boils down to thisuse whatever browser 'flips your skirt'
but MY preference is Safari. I also use Apple's mail app (also
better in 10.4), I suppose you recommend Eudora or some such?
So, calm down and find out what's making your beloved Firefox slow.
And, please ignore my suggestion.after all, that's all it was.

Installation of 10.4

2005-04-29 Thread Tim Collier
Sorry for this cross posting, but I have all of these: G4 Tower,
iMac and iBook.
I Installed 10.4 on the G5 iMac first, it went flawlessly and not one
problem. The G4 Tower is a dual 1 gig Quicksilver and it took a
total of 3 attempts at installation before it finally worked. The
iBook installed just like the iMac. The iBook is a G4 1.2 gig 12
incher.
Thought I would let everybody know my experience.

blue pismo screen

2005-04-28 Thread Tim Hodgson
Hi all,

My pismo has lately developed a worrying habit of waking up with a
blueish tinted screen. It's not an all-over cast, it's more that it seems
to be picking up the subtle horizontal grey stripes in the menu bar and
title bars, and colouring them blue, in a streaky kind of way! (I would
post a screengrab, but of course the effect isn't actually preserved in a
grab.)

After a few minutes the cast disappears quite suddenly.

Is this screen on the way out? I fear I already know the answer...

Interesting answer. I was thinking as I read it.hmmm, no music
industry, then nobody to pay artists, no artists being paid, no music!
What a sad, sad world that would be.

Just my thoughts,

Today, no. In the future, who knows. I know the EU countries have been
persuaded by the film and music companies to more or less ban p2p
sharing
technologies. IMHO this is a violation against the EU regulations for
trade barriers. My friends are marketing their music trough these
channels and so will I if I ever release anything. I don't need record
companies.

The music industry as of now will wither and it's only time before the
film industry goes the same way. In the latter case that's probably
both
good and bad. I won't miss the music industry of today, however.

But this issue is very offtopic, so let's drop it now (soon anyway) or
take it offlist.

Apple
delivers fax functionality in the system, but it is quite bare bone -
you

to a
printer automatically or send to e-mail address. That is about it -
check
the System Preferences -- Print Fax for details of what can be
set. You
will find the number of rings in there. One warning though - when you
send
the fax make sure to save a copy as their fax does not do it for you.
Also
there is no confirmation that the fax was sent correctly - I guess the
implied confirmation is that the fax goes away from the fax queue -
which
means that it was sent correctly.

Re: is my iBook screwed

Goodness, it's quite clear. I saw the earlier post and checked my Serial
Number by clicking on the Aqua Apple Menu/About This Mac. When the little
box opens right under the Apple Logo and where it says Mac OS X beneath
that it says 'Version 10.3.8' click on THAT then it will say build number,
click again and it will give you your serial number. Mine is UV4466X (I
didn't give the entire serial number), so obviously it is not in the range
and the problem does not apply to mine. If you in the range below, then you
are covered.what could be simpler?

Re: sync

2005-04-05 Thread Tim Collier
I use sort of a round-about way of doing this.and all it syncs is
Entourage calendars and contacts as well as various documents, but
Missing Sync (www.markspace.com) works really well with most PDA's.
Sync to the PDA from the laptop then sync it with the G5 iMac and
everything is the same on both. Also using iSync with a .Mac account
will 'sort of' do the same. I know this is not really the answer you
are looking for but it's a beginning. Hopefully Tiger will help us

As for the Airport Base Station: I love mine. Works great and is nice to
look at plus I get a good signal throughout the house (2500 square feet),
though I did purchase an Airport Express to boost the signal to the back of
the house.

Re: Mac OS X utility question

2005-03-15 Thread Tim Collier
Click the Apple Menu and then About this Mac then click on More Info and ASP
will launch. You can also find it in /Applications/Utilities/System
Profiler.

Re: New Member- iBook clamshell graphite

2005-03-15 Thread Tim Collier
I have a G4 iBook with the Airport Extreme card installed, I can access
wireless networks anywhere provided there is no password set on it. Can't
imagine that the original Airport card would work any differently.

My question for now: will I have the ability to get wireless at say the
coffee shop with the old airport card? Are there suggestions for a
wireless booster that would work to make the iBook useful in any room
 in my house?

I'm sure there will be more questions as I get the airport card and get
it installed, which I don't think will be a problem.

Re: New laptop possibility

2005-03-14 Thread Tim Collier
I've never really used OS 9 since I switched in 2001 back when 10.1 was just
released. My first Mac was a G4 867 tower and it booted into OS 9 but I
wanted to see what OS X was all about to I restarted it and never went back.
All of the software that I've purchased has been for OS X. My desktop is a
20 inch G5 iMacI think I told you and I only use OS X on itnever run
classic and don't have classic installed on either.
When I bought the iBook, I knew that 256 wasn't enough, so I bought an
additional 512it was a bit of a challenge installing it as you need a
'tiny' screwdriver to do ithad to go out and buy one. But once I got
it, it was easy.
Yes, I knew that there was an OS 9 (classic) install on the other disk. My
other OS 9 installation disks are for G4's and say so on the disk. So, I
don't think you could use them to install on anything else.
Since switching from PC, I have become a true Mac Addict!

Take care,

Tim

Hi Tim! The scary thing is that I was using a borrowed XP laptop on
the couch, and more than the G4 MDD. It's too easy to sit there and
 surf, isn't it. ;)

Hopefully with the ibook I can get rid of the two machines I use for
my home business as well, providing I can get my cutter to work off
it. Worst case I keep the 6500 which isn't worth much on the open
 market anyway!

Right now the book is a bit slower at only 256mb. When will Apple put
real ram in their machines? sigh I upgraded the desktop to 1gb
 right off the bat.

I have 2 iPods compliments of my SO. The 5gb 1G when it first came
out, and then xmas 03 for some reason he decided I needed a bigger
one so he got me the 40gb 3G. I hadn't even filled the 5gb yet.
Anyway, I do take them out blading, biking, running etc and even in
the car, depending on where I go, I'm a nervous wreck with them. I
think the Shuffle will put my mind at ease some. If he had bought it
for me without the 'book, I know I'd have the bigger one but honestly
neither of us will use it for more than 8 hours at a stretch!

I did find the 9.2 install on the cd's with the iBook. It's on the
repair cd, under install additional software. How odd is that, you'd
never find it unless you looked. Are your cd's like that or are they
complete 9.2 cd's? You may be able to twist my arm if that's the
case, esp if I need to keep the 6500.

Thanks for the offer and glad to know I'm not the only crazy one
sitting on the couch with a laptop. Not too good for the posture
 though LOL

Won't work. iBooks don't have pc card slots. Airport Extreme is the

Looking at prices for a 512MB SODIMM, I'd call $150 (Apple) versus $76
(OWC) more than a bit ;-)

Yes, I know you can get RAM for much less and in the past, I have purchased
it from other sources but rarely had a good experience. I can afford
it.so I buy it. Fact of life.

Upon reveiwing my email at 3/14/05 11:19 AM, I found the following message
from Jan Musil, whose email address is: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Tim, do you realize how much is a bit more? Apple is known for overcharging
customers for memory. You can get the same memory from other dealers for 2/3
to 1/2 of the price Apple charges you. And they are as quick to replace bad
 chip as Apple is.

Well, what do I care it is your money...
