Problem with Wallstreet HD install
Thanks for all the comments, but I don't think We have hit the solution yet. I did format the hd on my G4 and partioned with the 8gb. I then put the drive back in the WS and it did the same thing. I haven't tried the metal strip because I thought this was related only to sleep issues and newer drives did not have the problem. Could be wrong. I tried to boot with a os 9 disk, my diskwarrior disk and even os 8 to no avail. It seems to be a problem with booting from the cd. I can do it with the old drive, but not the new. Should it be possible to boot without a hd in the computer - with just a start up disk? Or does the computer have to see a hd even if there is no OS on it? Maybe there is something wrong with the new drive. __ Yahoo! Mail Mobile Take Yahoo! Mail with you! Problem with Wallstreet HD install
Decided today to try to get a little more life out of the old Wallstreet by putting in a new hd. I had a 30g Hitachi i bought six months ago and stuck it in. Holding down the C key I tried to boot to the 10.2 disk, but only got the flashing question mark. This made no sense so I tried resetting pram, power manager, tried an external keyboard, used a zip with 9.1 on it, and diskwarrior but no luck. Thinking I must have damaged something, I took the new drive out and replaced the old. It started up and I was able to boot the 10.2 disk. Put the new drive in an enclosure, hooked it up to my G4 and formatted and partioned it. Back into the Wallstreet and the same problem. I have installed a number of drives over the years, but this has me stumped. Its got to be something simple I'm overlooking - a real forehead smacker. Re: Is Apple really moving to x86 architechture?!
If you look at the Apple developer documentation for the switch, you'll see that they will in fact be using standard x86 chips in future Macs. Given the timeframe of the switch, and Intel's processor roadmaps, I'm betting on them replacing G4s with the Yonah Pentium M (32-bit 2.13GHz+, dual core, 667MHz FSB, 2MB L2 cache), and G5s with the Merom (64-bit, probably starting 2.5-3GHz, dual core). The new Macs also won't have Open Firmware -- reportedly, they'll use Intel's new EFI (http://www.intel.com/technology/efi/). The jury's still out on exactly what they'll do with the chipset, whether it'll be a standard Intel type or custom-made for Apple, but either way, it won't be too far removed (technologically) from ordinary PC hardware. Personally, I'm looking forward to replacing my 1.67GHz PowerBook with something roughly 3 times as fast (if what I've been hearing about OS X performance on the developer boxes is correct) in about a year's time. The transition will be a headache for a lot of developers, but it's definitely the right move to make. Re: How do current iBooks fare in multimedia apps like iMovie or Garageband?
If you get a G4 powerbook, iMovie and Garageband will fly. Upgrading the HD to a 5400 is fairly simple, but what is even easier is to get an external Firewire drive and use that. This easier, and makes taking data elseware a breeze. Just make sure you have AT LEAST 768 Megs of memory when trying to run iMovie, with a G4 600, increasing the ram from 512 to 768 cut down rendering time by about 1/3rd, because it did not need to use the HD for virtual memory. Re: Back up when traveling
Hard drives have metal cases, which will prevent a magnet from doing any real damage (unless you're taking it through an MRI machine, or something similar). Personally, I'd go for both: keep regular backups on the hard drive, and duplicate backups of the most important stuff on CD or DVD. Also, try to separate the backups as much as possible; you could consider mailing CDs containing vital data to your home address at regular intervals, or keeping a set in every part of your luggage, etc. Cheers, Ben On 26 Feb 2005, at 22:41, Peter Saint James wrote: I'm assessing back-up strategies to use while doing some extended traveling. In the laptop market with Linux and Windoze running PC laptops below $500 there's no point in spending over $1000 for a laptop. The PowerBook's market is thusly limited to a small but loyal cadre of Apole devotees and the iBook will need further price drops to be competitive.. flame away... Dyna Really, your statement is about as accurate as saying In the auto market, with Korean and Malaysian cars selling for less than A$15,000, there's no point in paying more than A$30,000 for a car -- if there wasn't, Lexus, BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Audi, Porsche, Ferrari, and Lamborghini would be in severe trouble. So, instead of getting distracted by the ultra low-end, why don't we compare the price points Apple actually competes in? For example, for A$2999 (same price as the entry-level 15 PB) would get me an Inspiron 6000, with a 2GHz Pentium M (similar to the 1.5GHz G4 -- a 1.25GHz G4 is much faster, in my experience, than a 1.5GHz Pentium M), same RAM as the PB, a smaller, slower hard drive, a significantly worse GPU (X300 versus 9700), and a similar optical drive. In terms of software bundles, you'd have to spend a few hundred on the Dell to get it comparable to the PowerBook. And then you'd have to pay A$99 for delivery on the Dell, compared with free shipping on the PowerBook. If that's not enough, the Dell is also incredibly ugly, and over half an inch thicker (and doesn't have Bluetooth, doesn't have FireWire 800, probably doesn't have DVI out, is unlikely to have gigabit Ethernet, etc.). Low-end PC laptops (the ones below US$500) are invariably based on the Pentium 4 processor, which generally means no integrated wireless, and always means appalling battery life, chunky appearance, and hefty weight. Let's see what the Dell catalogue offers -- A$1699 (plus $99 shipping, so really A$1800) gets the Inspiron 1150 (Awesome Value). Pentium 4, 2.8GHz XP Home Edition 256MB DDR RAM (shared with the graphics card) 30GB hard disk Integrated Graphics (the desktop version is laughable enough, imagine it on a laptop!) DVD burner 15 1024x768 display and a free leather carry case... For A$200 less, you could get the 12 iBook: 1.2GHz G4 (admittedly somewhat slower than the Pentium 4) OS X (equivalent to XP Professional -- that's a $100 upgrade for the Dell) 256MB RAM (NOT shared with graphics) 30GB hard disk Radeon 9200 32MB (slow, but vastly, vastly better than integrated graphics) Combo drive and a 12 1024x768 display The iBook also comes with wireless, a much better battery life, and much, much smaller dimensions (the Dell is more than half an inch thicker). Re: battery life for current ALBook 15 inchers..
The quoted battery life is pretty optimistic. If you dim your screen, set processor speed to reduced, turn AirPort and Bluetooth off, don't use any USB or FireWire devices, don't use an external monitor, and set the hard drive to spin down when possible, you might be able to make the supposed maximum of 4.5 hours. (note this doesn't mean running many programs at once, but having them do things all at once.) 512 and up is really only noticeable if you're cranking through large RAM hungry ops, like Photoshop, 3D rendering/modelling, audio, video (though, surprisingly, video is less RAM limited than CPU limited. A single frame of video is actually rather small, compared to say a rendering tree for a 1024x768 image or a 5 MP RAW camera image) or some more exotic stuff like bioinformatics or really really REALLY big spreadsheets. I suspect you will be hard pressed to notice the difference between 768 MB and 1G in most daily stuff. I just upgraded my 933MHz iBook G4 from 640MB to 1152MB, and noticed a pretty significant difference. With nothing else running, OS X and the Finder will often use up to 500MB, and iPhoto will happily use 250MB during prolonged scrolling. Currently, with Finder, Mail, Adium X, Installer, Terminal, Address Book, iCal, TextEdit, Preview, Taco HTML Edit and Safari open, 1.11GB of my RAM is in use. Re: Safari/Camino/non-IE browser problems?
Do you have similar problems connecting with other protocols (e.g. FTP, POP3, SMTP)? To me, the issues you describe seem similar to those caused by high rates of packet loss over your connection; however, the fact that IE works doesn't fit in with that hypothesis. Just a check: try opening Terminal, and typing telnet www.apple.com 80, hitting return, waiting a couple of seconds, typing GET /, and hitting return again. What happens? If everything is working correctly, you should see a large amount of text outputted within a few seconds of you typing the commands. Re: another iBook problem
I've had a problem with my iBook that causes the display to go blank as it comes back from display sleep or the screensaver (sometimes with games as well). It appears to be shut down, but it still responds to keyboard commands, etc. So, while you were waiting for it to shut down, the display could have gone to sleep, causing you to think that it had in fact shut down. As it wasn't really shut down, just in the buggy display-sleep mode, closing the lid would put it into system sleep, which causes the light to pulsate. The fact that it didn't wake up again could mean that it was close enough to shutting down that the GUI was missing, or any number of other things. At any rate, bizarre sleep behaviour is something I've just learned to put up with -- during normal system operation, if the screen blanks, you can just close the lid, wait for system sleep, and wake it up again. The issue seems to be fairly common, I'm not sure if there's a solution to it yet. Cheers, Ben On 15 Feb 2005, at 08:31, Jeff Wiseman wrote: The other day I had some interesting things happen. Closed the lid, and set it aside for the night, but after the lights were out I noticed a fading and brightening effect. Thinking this couldn't possibly be the iBook, since I shut it down, not put it to sleep, I took a closer look, opened the lid, and nothing, although the sleep light had been on for some reason. After closing the lid again the fading light didn't come back. The next morning I woke up, tried to turn on the iBook, and it did not respond. More curious, the bottom of the book was very warm, warmer that it usually gets when even sitting on my lap. I removed the battery and the power chord, plugged the battery battery back in again, and it powered back on with no problems. I have had no other problems since then. Is this indicative of a greater problem? Possibly a well known problem? Am I going to have to send my iBook in to be repaired AGAIN? Re: Wall Street Refurb
I'd recommend the following order, but others are equally good: 1. Install additional RAM 2. Boot machine and verify that everything works, and the RAM is detected 3. Install new hard drive 4. Reformat, then install OS and needed applications 5. Test wireless card 6. Verify that everything is working as expected 7. Begin processor card installation (you may need to run a program to save your machine's ROM before you install; refer to the instructions that came with the card) 8. Remove old processor card, and remove its RAM 9. Install all RAM on the new processor card 10. Install new processor card 11. Boot machine and verify that everything works It's important to only do a step or two at a time, and to test constantly -- that way, if something fails, you know roughly what it is. Re: A question regarding OpenGL. . .
OpenGL generally isn't user-configurable, except via the preferences or options dialogs of programs that use it. You could try messing around with it via the OpenGL Driver Monitor or OpenGL Profiler (in Developer/Applications/Graphics), but there's not much point in doing that for most people. Under OS X, OpenGL hardware acceleration is fully supported on any machine with a Rage 128 or better (that's Pismo or later for laptops, and BlueWhite G3 or later for desktops). If you have an AGP card with 16MB or more VRAM, parts of the GUI will be drawn using OpenGL. All the iTunes Use OpenGL button does is use OpenGL to speed up some of the 2D drawing operations. If you've got 16MB or more VRAM, the difference should be noticeable. Cheers, Ben On 29 Jan 2005, at 20:29, Zoltan Batiz wrote: Is OpenGL user configurable? Or is this one of those background things? Re: what is wrong with this PB ????
Before you go any further, back up. If your DVD burner isn't working, try a FireWire hard drive or another Mac (connected via FireWire or Ethernet). If the problem has survived two archive and installs, either it's fairly serious, or it's a consequence of something that isn't affected by an archive and install -- so prepare for the worst. It may help the troubleshooting process if you open /Applications/Utilities/Console, and post the logs you get when applications crash, or Safari hangs. If there's something consistent in all applications, the crash logs can point to where the root cause is. The main system log will be displayed when you open Console; to access each application's crash log, click the Logs button in the toolbar, then the disclosure arrow next to ~/Library/Logs, then the arrow next to CrashReporter -- it'll be clear which logs are for which applications. Re: Wallstreet Hard Drive Recommendations
From what I've heard, ATA-6 (aka ATA/100) or later drives are not compatible with the Wallstreet. You'll need an ATA-5 drive, which limits things a bit -- I'd go for a relatively low-capacity drive (say 40GB) at 5400rpm, preferably with an 8MB buffer. A large buffer is good, because it reduces the amount of mechanical work a drive has to do, so you'll get higher access speeds and a longer battery life, and a 5400rpm drive is good (even though it reduces battery life) because it is noticeably faster than the 4200rpm drives that come standard with most laptops. Due to the age of the machine, you probably won't be using it for video editing, gaming, or anything else that's too space-hungry (unless you have a large music collection), so the 40GB should be ample. Re: Playing DVDs on a Wallstreet running OSX
Wallstreet- and Lombard-series machines aren't powerful enough to decode DVDs in software -- that's why DVD-capable models were fitted with the hardware decoders. OS X does not support hardware DVD decoding on these models, so it's just not possible to play DVDs under OS X. All my accounts are checked at 5 minute intervals, because in this day and age, checking for new mail slightly more often than strictly necessary doesn't affect internet performance in the slightest. We're talking about a total of a couple of hundred bytes each way to establish the connection, realise that there's nothing new, and close the connection. It's also possible disable automatic checking on a per-account basis, should the need arise. AFAIK, Mail cannot do that, nor can Thunderbird. Eudora is the only mail app that has that kind of flexibility. And as to it not being an OS X application, it is a Carbon application, like Photoshop or Word or GraphicConverter. Not Cocoa, but still very useful. I will be happy to be proved wrong and show other mail programs that can handle multiple accounts as well as Eudora does. Luis Sequeira At this stage, the only feature you've mentioned that Mail doesn't have (set automatic check intervals on a per-account basis) is entirely unnecessary for anyone with an internet connection faster than a 14.4k modem. Good point -- I don't think there's any way of getting Mail to do that other than manually taking accounts offline, then bringing them back online when you want to check them. Cheers, Ben On 19 Jan 2005, at 03:36, Luis Sequeira wrote: I (almost) stand corrected. You're right that having different intervals on a per-account basis is not terribly important. It does not import my accounts (personalities in Eudora parlance), but I can remake them. Not a big deal, I have currently 10. I can select, on a per-account basis, whether to check mail automatically. What I can't seem to do is to check mail for a specific account, or set of accounts, individually. Let be more specific: I have a few accounts for specific purposes that are not used daily. In Eudora, I can have these set up so that Check mail does not check these accounts. One, for example, is an backup account with a free ISP that only allows POP when using one of their modem connections. I want to be able to keep this account accessible but disabled, in the sense that manually selecting the Check mail command does not try to check mail from this account. I don't find any way to achieve this. Now in Eudora I can leave the check box check mail on manual checks unchecked and, when needed, bring up the personalities pane, select this (and possibly others) personality and hit the check mail button, thus checking mail for this personality, while the regular check mail does not affect it. Can I have this sort of functionality in Mail? I would love to. Luis Sequeira -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Re: Questions: OS Upgrades, browser/Mail/News choice
The Password field in the accounts preferences pane *always* displays the same number of dots, regardless of password length or whether there's one there or not. It's an added security measure. You can't really change the account to your name, at least not fully -- short user names cannot be changed once set. Language changes don't take full effect until you log out and back in again (or until you quit all open applications, including the Finder and some system services). If you've done that, and some applications still use the wrong language, they may not have Norwegian localisations. Since you speak English, you should drag English into second place in the Languages preference pane. This will force every app that doesn't support Norwegian to use English instead. I am wondering if I, instead of having to load iTunes (which I want to keep) onto another disk and re-install the system, just could have changed his account to my name. There's something else that is odd too though. I changed the language from french which he used, to Norwegian. But when I am trying to quit, I get a window with french language. I have no idea what it means, and since I am not familiar with OS X to begin with, it really doesn't make any sense. Do any of you know how I could get it to change the language all the way through? I have no idea how I can do that, not being used to OS X (or different accounts in general), but I am sure it can't be all that difficult. Can you change the settings for iTunes, so that it becomes available from all accounts? There are a couple of things you can do. Firstly, you can copy his iTunes music (normally in Users/[username]/Music/iTunes) out of his user folder (for instance, you could drag it to the root level of the hard drive). This means that even if you delete his user account, the music will stay. Then, for each account you want to use that music library in, go to iTunesPreferencesAdvanced, and click Change Navigate to wherever you put the music folder, and click Choose. Alternatively, if you only want the music in one account, you can simply move the Users/[username]/Music/iTunes folder to the Music folder of a different user account. No -- the presence of the defaultuser account, while annoying, will not cause any problems. All you need to do to get rid of a user is to open System PreferencesAccounts, select the user, and press the - button at the bottom of the dialog. Re: To iBook or AlBook, that is the question
I'd recommend the PB 12 -- the screens are generally better, the GPU is better, and they're more expandable. The GPU may not seem like it's too important, but under Tiger, none of the iBooks (nor the Mac mini, for that matter) will support CoreImage. This means you can't use Motion, and you won't be able to use the efficiency improvements that Tiger implements. The DVI out is another big thing -- if you want to upgrade the LCD (or if the current one has a DVI connecter), it's much better to go DVI-DVI (or even DVI-VGA) than VGA-DVI. Also, PowerBooks can (officially) take more RAM (up to 1.25GB, I believe, compared with 640MB for the iBooks). Newer, high-capacity SODIMMs make this less of an issue, but it's still good to have over 1GB of RAM wherever possible. An extra 10GB hard drive space is not huge either way, but you'll probably hit the limits of the 30GB drive reasonably soon, so at least the 40GB gives you more time to upgrade. Finally, the PB is just a much more attractive computer. The iBooks scratch and stain quite easily, whereas the PB maintains its pretty aluminium sheen through almost any punishment. Any damage to the LCD unit won't show up in Grab, because Grab takes the picture data directly from the framebuffer (an area in memory that contains the image being written to the screen). Re: Wallstreet
My understanding is that the problem is in the PMU settings, not the PRAM. Steps 2 and 3 may well be unnecessary on some models, but are required on mine. As for pressing the brightness button, I find that it will only fix the problem if the backlight is off after startup; when the backlight fails to turn on after waking from sleep, the brightness controls do nothing. During the first boot, when you do this, the machine may (or may not) freeze. On the second boot, this will not happen. Something to do with garbled NVRAM or PRAM Settings I have speculated. I never investigated, but if anyone want to check this, they could run the command: sudo nvram -p password in the terminal and compare the individual settings when the machine doesn't have this display problem, with when the machine do have the problem. In order to do the latter one could direct a strong light source to the display in order to see. This worked for me., for doing restarts into OS 9. I do think if possible it's ok to press the backlight buttons a few times to kick in the backlights if this is possible, as, for me at least, the problem came back at next restart, indicating the settings were the same even if you pressed those buttons. Most often for me, I couldn't get back the backlight, if I didn't press those buttons somewhere around midway thru the boot process, before Aqua. After that did not work. There may be other variations of course. Interesting. I think your interpretation is probably right; my PRAM battery was *completely* dead. Power failure during sleep does put more strain on the PRAM battery, as the Wallstreet uses the battery to back up the contents of main memory for 15-30 seconds (to enable battery changeover during sleep). Every time the power is interrupted (i.e. you take the power cord out, while no working battery is present), you will have to repeat the procedure--even if the Wallstreet was turned off at the time you removed the power cord. For me this problem *only* appeared if the wallstreet was in sleep or running when the power was cutoff. It's possible the difference is because my backup battery had a small load and yours didn't have one at all, but I'm not sure. My experience is somewhat different, however, and I thought it worth mentioning. Cheers, Ben -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Re: OS X on Lombard
Ensure your RAM is working correctly -- try removing each of the DIMMs in turn, and installing. OS X is much more picky about its RAM than OS 9. Apart from that, try resetting PRAM (Cmd-Opt-P-R at startup, hold until you hear 3 startup chimes), resetting the PMU (instructions will be in the manual, not familiar with the Lombard procedure), or doing a low-level format on the hard drive and testing it for bad sectors. The first try, installing it over OS 9.2.2, didn't get me anywhere so I wiped the hard drive clean, partitioned it into a 5 G part for OS X and a 1 G for OS 9, installed the latter without any problem, tried several other OS X installs but never got any further than about 2 min before the predicted end ( generally, however, it crashed long before that) after which, invariable, I found myself with a crashed powerbook. In those cases, a check with Disk First Aid revealed that the OS X partition had been corrupted but after a repair, the same seems to happen again albeit that the hard disk seems to be corrupted in different places. You should be able to read DVDs, but you won't be able to play them. A 300MHz G3 is simply not fast enough to decode the DVD video. Re: MP3 editor required - any suggestions?
You can do it in iTunes, just use the start/end points in the track info to select the bit you want, and choose Convert to MP3 (or something to that effect). It'll create a new MP3 file with the same ID3 tags, and only the data between the start and end points. Alternatively, convert the file to AIFF, and use virtually any sound utility out there--in fact, you could do it in QuickTime Player, if you have QT Pro. Re: Lombard reformat
Kristina, I'd recommend reformatting the drive, and installing again from scratch. OS X installations are fairly tricky to remove properly. If the machine has been running mainly in OS X, there's not much you can keep that will be any good to you in OS 9 -- most of the nice OS X fonts aren't compatible with older versions of the OS. The best way to reset it? Zap the PRAM (hold down Cmd-Opt-P-R right after you press the power button, and keep them down until you've heard 3 startup chimes), boot off the CD (hold down the C key after you press the power button), reformat the drive using Disk Utility (in the Utilities folder on the system CD) -- you could even do a low-level format, but that's probably unnecessary -- and then install the system and applications you want. Make sure you format the drive as Mac OS Extended (HFS+), otherwise you'll waste lots of space. When I hit the brightness button above the keyboard, everything is fine. Odd, but it's not like I can't work around it. However, if I try to boot from the CD, the screen is also black, (I can almost make everything out, but not quite), but the brightness button doesn't help. in other words, I can't repair disks etc. reset logins, etc. from my boot CD. Strange, yes? Anybody encounter this before? This is a known issue with the Wallstreet under Jaguar. To fix this problem: * Restart into MacOS 9 * Put the Wallstreet to sleep * Wake it up again * Restart into Jaguar Every time the power is interrupted (i.e. you take the power cord out, while no working battery is present), you will have to repeat the procedure--even if the Wallstreet was turned off at the time you removed the power cord. Another quirk is that when I try to verify or repair permissions, it makes it only about halfway through and then bogs down. Lastly, I bought a cable at Microcenter this weekend out of the bargain bin. It is for Powerbooks and has a HDI 30 fitting on one end and a SCSI DB M25 fitting on the other end. My intent was to be able to hook my Wallstreet up to a external CDRW or HD. Unfortunately this cable has the wrong end on it. It has the end that plugs into the back of my Umax J-700, S-900, G3 MT, or PowerTower Pro. Is there a gender/bender fitting to convert this so I can plug my SCSI CDRW into this cable? Thanks, as always, in advance. You may have purchased a SCSI disk mode cable, which will cause the PowerBook to start up emulating a SCSI device. If you have, there's not really anything you can do to get it to work other than buying a new cable. They sell for about $5 on eBay. Look for an HDI-30 to Centronics cable--most SCSI peripherals have a Centronics port on them, rather than the DB25. Cheers, Ben -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Re: Speedbumping a Lombard 400MHz bus to 100MHz ???
Yes, it's possible, but you may not actually want to do it. The thing with bus speeds on the Lombard is, both the processor and the Grackle PCI bridge/memory controller have their own PLLs to generate the 66MHz clock from the 33MHz PCI clock. So, there are 2 sets of multipliers to adjust. I don't know of any Lombard overclocking guides, so you may have to work out which resistor pads control the PLLs, which could be tricky. That said, normally the 66MHz variant of the Grackle (XPC106ARX66) is capable of 83MHz operation, and the processor supports it too, so you could almost certainly bump the speed to 83MHz. The other issue is that the processor generates its internal clock (in your case, 400MHz) by multiplying the frequency of the bus clock. That means that if you bump up the bus to 83MHz, the processor will run at 500MHz -- which, given the difficulty of effectively cooling laptops, it may not be stable enough operate correctly. You'd probably have to drop the multiplier to 5.5x, which would give 460MHz operation (or even 5x, for 415MHz). This, of course, requires messing around with yet another set of multipliers. If you have a steady hand, and the equipment to solder 0603-scale surface-mount components, and the time to either find a guide, or work it out for yourself, *and* the desire to maximize every performance-related number you can, no matter the cost, go ahead. If not, don't worry, because the bus clock rate increase from 66 to 83MHz makes virtually no difference to system speed anyway. Re: Speedbumping a Lombard 400MHz bus to 100MHz ???
The 250 and 292MHz Wallstreet Is had 83MHz buses; the later PDQ (Wallstreet II) models didn't. Thing is, the 300MHz/66 bus PDQ is generally faster than the 292MHz/83 bus Wallstreet, despite being based on almost identical hardware, and others have found that changing the bus speed of G3 systems between 66 and 83MHz makes little difference to overall performance. Re: X on Wallstreet
On 8 Nov 2004, at 14:32, Laurent Daudelin wrote: If you could upgrade the processor for the 300MHz for cheap, then I think it would be worth it, but I'm not sure buying a brand new G4 upgrades is. You are still left with a sub-par video system that can't be upgraded and a relatively slow system bus. For a few hundred dollars than what you would pay for a G4 upgrade, you could probably find a faster iBook that will more easily support OS X. Unless there's any sentimental attachment to the machine, Laurent's advice is very sound. A 500MHz G4 upgrade, the fastest available for the Wallstreet, will cost you upwards of $300 -- and it still won't enable you to run OS X particularly well. Add to that the cost of upgrading the RAM (256MB is about the minimum), and you're already more than a third of the way towards getting a brand-new iBook, with wireless networking, a processor more than twice as fast, probably 5-8 times the hard disk space, a vastly better video card, and full support for current and future versions of OS X. Even an older iBook, say 500-700MHz, would be much faster in OS X than an upgraded Wallstreet -- and probably wouldn't cost much more than $350, either. That said, a Wallstreet can be a worthwhile OS X machine for some purposes (mainly office applications like e-mail, web browsing, word processing, and so forth). The 266MHz processor is fine, and as long as you've got at least 256MB RAM (and a hard drive large enough to store OS X -- about 1GB plus 1GB or so for swapfiles and temporary usage -- and your applications and documents), you should be set. A 300MHz processor card goes for twice as much as a 266MHz on eBay, so it's probably not really worth it for the hypothetical 10% speed boost. Note also that most 266MHz cards can be overclocked to at least 300MHz without much effort, although there is some soldering required.
