Interchanging iBook G3 G4 keyboards
I'm afraid I've mostly lurked on this list for a while and I apologize if the subject has been covered before, but just in case it's helpful... I certainly didn't find anyone who seemed to have done the deed when I Googled this up a few times over the last year. Short answers: * You *cannot* use iBook G4 keyboards on iBook G3s without putting an extension on the ribbon, which, if you don't mind, we'll say is a nontrivial exercise, to put it mildly. * You *can* use G3 keyboards on G4 with a few caveats. One, you'll have to fold the ribbon like a Z over on itself, which is not the recommended way of using a ribbon cable. Two, you'll have a slight bow in the keyboard that'll make it poke up just enough you'll likely scrape the screen with your keyboard's keys. I had a G4 keyboard go flakey on me (never liked it as much as the iBook G3 keyboard, and it finally acted so wacky I either had to clean it #shudder!# or use it as an excuse for this experiment) and, after pulling another keyboard from a limping iBook G3, the things looked similar enough I thought it was worth a shot. So far, so good. The bent-over ribbon does concern me a bit, however. The iBook G4 keyboard doesn't have a particularly nice feel, imo, though the metal keyholders do seem a bit more robust. I've had issues on my G4 kybd with the space bar not being so responsive and with random keys repeating at the slightest pressure (particularly h, fwiw). Taking a little out of a G3 keyboard's ribbon would seem a nice way to get a good typing-feel into this very nice laptop. I'd considered downgrading to an iBook G3 900 to get as much perf as I could with the nicer keyboard, esp since Small Dog had told me that I couldn't swap in a G3 kybd for the G4. Glad I found out differently, so far. I'm not so sure they were wrong -- the keyboards *aren't* interchangeable. But, again, you can take the G3's to the G4. Anyhow, there you go. Hope that helps someone at some point. iBook G3 14 startup problems
We have an iBook G3 800mhz 14 that has developed startup problems. Last year it was through the Apple extended repair program for the video/logic board issue and has been working well since. This week, it has been locking up during use (OS 9.1), shut down and restarted using the keyboard commands. I was told that one time it started up and exhibited the same garbled lines on the screen as it had before it went to Apple for the logic board repair. I haven't been able to reproduce that since, however. I have attempted to reset PRAM (letting it chime 3-5 times), reset the power manager using the keyboard commands, removed all power from it, let it sit for a few hours, attempted to restart using the power on key. Sometimes, upon attempt to restart I hear one long (2-3 second) tone before the startup chime. Sometimes I just hear the startup chime. In either case, I don't hear the drive spinning up or anything beyond the chime, and see no sign of life on the screen - it stays dark. I tried reseating and removing the memory with no change in results. Have attempted startup from both the AC power and just the battery (which is fully charged). Attempts to startup from a boot CD result in a startup chime, the sound of the CD drive spinning for several seconds, and then more silence and darkness. iBook g3 screen replacement....
Greetings, I'm in midstream on replacing the display of my iBook (g3, 600 mhz) and wanted to check in quickly. I bought a replacement display assembly on eBay and installed it. The computer booted up, and the screen lit up. I poured myself a drink, celebrated, went to bed. This afternoon the screen started flickering almost as soon as I fired it up. Tonight I plan to go back in and do the installation again. I suspect I may have missed an element or two, or not affixed things as tight as tight can be. For example, after behaving properly for the first few hours (orange/green) the power plug went dark, suggesting other connectivity issues. Based on these two diagnostic points (flickering screen, dead power plug) does anybody have any other words of wisdom? Basic iBook g3 questions
Hi, I recently acquired my first ibook, a late 2001 600mhz G3 model. When I plug the laptop in, sometimes the lamp around the AC port is amber, and sometimes it is green. Also, when I jiggle the portion of the adapter where it plugs into the laptop, it goes from green to amber while still plugged in. What do the colors mean, and is it supposed to change color when jiggled while plugged in? Also, I am interested in (someday) replacing the dvd drive in it with a slot-loading cd-rw unit; can someone assist me with this offlist? Re: ?: iBook G3 500 has10.3.9: Is HD wipeout needed to install OS 9.2.2 / 10.3.9?
Sorry! I meant to modify my previous posting to include you all in my request for advice. I asked (now modified): I just attempted to install (add) OS 9.2.1 (to the OS X 10.3.8 on which the iBook is currently running, and is the only OS currently installed on it), starting up from the 9.2.1 disk which comes as part of the install set of OS X 10.2. When I get to the screen which asks to choose a disk to install the OS on, the iBook's HD is not selectable. The message is: This version of Mac OS 9.2.1 may not be installed over the system software on the currently selected volume. Press the Options. . . button to perform a clean installation. When I press the Options. . . button, I'm told: Perform Clean Installation. Installs a completely new System Jolder that does not include your third-party extensions, control panels, or fornts. System software and application preferences are reset to their original settings. This message gives me NO indication of whether this installation will wipe out the installed version of OS X 10.3.8. What do you recommend I do here? Many thanks, stanton -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Then you can drag over, from the Previous System Folder, stuff you do not wish to losem to the new System Folder. This should not affect your OSX system. You'll be asked for your password, and be shown a short warning about being nice if this is the first time you've used sudo, before the command will run. It may take a while but this WILL search the entire hard drive. Actually it'll search all mounted volumes, so kick out your OS 9 CD first. It will appear to do nothing, but if it comes back to the command prompt without having printed anything, there truly is no folder called System Folder on the disk. No. OS 9 and OS X are independent and different things. Do NOT screw around with the various oddly named files and folders you see in OS 9, or you WILL mess up OS X, but the installers don't even notice the other system. Very likely it will set the startup system folder to the OS 9 one, but you can change that with the startup disk control panel. The issue is, the only way you get that error message is if there IS a newer version of OS 9 on the system somewhere. I'd just go for a clean install and go from there. USB 2.0 on an iBook G3 600?
Hello all, My roommate and I are going to be getting 4 Gig iPod Nano's soon. I have a Pismo, so I'll be getting a PC card adapter that will give my Pismo USB 2.0. As the new Nano doesn't have Firewire, using 1.1 with the 4 gig model would be so slow it might be unpractical. But that's a simple solution for the Pismo. What can my roommate do with his iBook? It's got two USB 1.1 ports and one firewire port. There's no PC card slot as is the standard with iBooks. Is there an adapter that can give the iBook (son of Pismo) a USB 2.0 port? I've been looking, but have found nothing. Any ideas would be helpful. And for those in the know. . . just how slow would it be to transfer 4 gig worth of music using USB 1.1? A day? A week? However if you use it in true shuffle mode, iTunes creates the new 'mix', then only adds and removes songs that are different from what's on the shuffle. The nano will work in the same fashion. The Nano is usable via USB 1.1, just slow. I think it has to do with the difference in L2 cache size as much as anything. Just speculation though. I agree this is the reason as the g4 bluechips aren't faster than the 500Mhz+ PB G4s in tests I've seen. iBooks, except maybe for the latest, seem crippled. I actually thought that the then 2003-04 crop of iBook G4s, maybe they had 256MB, looked bad GUI-wise compared to my WS II 266 with 384 MB and 10.3. iBook G3 drive type
Does anyone know the combo drive type in the dual USB iBooks, more so, the iBook 800 (April 2003) ? Know of any drive that will fit the bezel without too much surgery? iBook G3 - G4
The Logic Boards in the whole white iBook line (G3, G4, 12 14) occupies only the left side and since the ports are located in the same position I was wondering if it is feasible to swap them; i.e. upgrade a G3 to a G4. video problem iBook G3
I just bought a G3/800 iBook with 32MB VRAM and have a weird problem. It had Panther installed (not in English) and I wiped the HD, made 2 partitions and installed 9.2.2 on one and Panther + 9.2.2 on the other. 9 installed fine in both cases and everything worked okay, but after I zapped the PRAM and rebuilt the deskop, the desktop on screen turned, and has remained, small, covering about 2/3 of the screen and sitting right in the middle. Checked the monitor control panel and it gave me 2 displays, including an external one: though none was attached. I attached an external display, which showed up mirrored, but the desktop on the iBook remained 2/3. I then installed Panther and the desktop was normal. Everything also worked fine with external monitor attached. I then booted back into 9, with the external monitor attached, and the iBook's desktop filled the whole iBook screen, plus the external one was okay. I then detached the external monitor and rebooted the iBook in 9, and the small desktop problem returned. Any suggestions? Thanks, Chris -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... There weren't many 12 G3 iBooks with DVD drive; mostly they were fitted with plain CDs. This was one of the enhancements that came in with the G4 range. DVDs were available on the 14 G3 iBooks. To be truthful, my feeling is that you'd be better off looking for a s/hand 12 G4 iBook; the 800 Mhz ones from the beginning of this year are beginning to show up s/hand now, and they are very, very good. Considerably better, IMHO, than the G3 iBooks: G4, of course; DVD; Airport Extreme; nicer keyboard; and it's believed they're free of the motherboard problems that have beset the G3 iBooks. They do cost a bit more, but one result of the reduction of new prices over the last couple of years is that second-hand prices have also been compressed; a 4 month-old 800Mhz G4 iBook won't cost that much more than a 12-month old G3 iBook. There weren't many 12 G3 iBooks with DVD drive; mostly they were fitted with plain CDs. This was one of the enhancements that came in with the G4 range. DVDs were available on the 14 G3 iBooks. Actually, that's not entirely true. While the low-end iBooks were offered with CD only drives, there were 12 models with DVD or Combo drives available at every revision as well. I currently have a 600mHz and a 900mHz G3 iBook with Combo drives. They're readily available on eBay and are pretty cheap. Most of the ones left at resellers will be the CD version as they were the cheapest and slowest selling models. Apple kept them around to have an entry level machine at a good price point. To be truthful, my feeling is that you'd be better off looking for a s/hand 12 G4 iBook; the 800 Mhz ones from the beginning of this year are beginning to show up s/hand now, and they are very, very good. I'd have to agree with you here. You can probably get an 800mHz G4 iBook for a few $$ more than an 800-900mHz G3 one. The benefits noted above are real as well. The only downside is that OS 9 is only available in Classic on the G4 models. Make sure you get a DVD version though. No Batteries Available - iBook G3/900
I just started having a similar problem in my 900mHz G3 iBook. It's only 8 months old and was working great until this morning. When I woke it up this morning (after being plugged in all night, as usual) it said there was no battery present. I tried resetting the nvram (from open firmware) after trying to reset the power manager, all to no avail. Just out of curiosity, I swapped in the battery from my wife's 600mHz iBook and it ran and charged it fine. My battery has just up and died, apparently. It shows up as dead in the 600mHz iBook as well. Any ideas? I hardly ever use it on battery power so I'm stunned that it would just die like this. Any info is appreciated. It can even run off the battery while claiming it has no battery!! (But it shuts down very ungracefully when - I presume - the battery runs down.) Does anyone know what can cause this in this model? The one way I've figured out to get it to see its battery is to pull it out and snap it back it - a pain since it's on the bottom, plus it doesn't work all the time any more (or for very long when it does work). I've tried restarting, resetting the PMU (using Apple's instructions for this powerbook), and using the battery update software from Apple's site (which isn't described as solving this problem - in fact, the I only remember seeing the x through the battery problem mentioned in conjunction with WallStreets, and couldn't find any mention of it happening to Aluminum G4s). None of these helped. It should be under warranty still, and definitely has a CompUSA extended warranty (I got the floor model from there), but CompUSA is inconvenient to me - over an hour - and I wanted to know if anyone here had an idea what the problem might be (battery? PMU? other?) before I check out the local Apple repair site or hit the road for CompUSA. How long did you have it? It could be the battery running out, but since it's a 17, I would think something else is at cause, like the PMU. -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Laurent asked how long I'd had mine - I didn't get back because after having the problem for a week or so, my computer behaved for the last 3 days. Then this morning, when I started it up after it sat plugged in charged shut down all night (not common, I'd shut it down because I had to log out back in anyway to activate some software), the X of doom is back! Well, I got it the day before Christmas, as we stopped in to get a present for my husband - he ended up buying a much better one for me :-) But it was the display model, so it had been on, plugged in, with this battery in it, for months - probably since the early days of this model (when did it first ship, last March?). I'll hope it's the battery because then I don't have to lose the computer for any time, just swing into CompUSA swap out the battery!
