My system usually runs with about 70MB when I have browser, terminals etc. (normal operation for me) but when updatedb runs it basically launches my RAM usage up well over 300MB and doesn't release when 'updatedb' finishes. I do understand how Linux memory works so this shouldn't be a concern but it is irritating because when I run a Fortran 90 or R job I need quite a bit of RAM and the system freezes up starts to go to swap before releasing the cached memory.. giving a very choppy feel.. and actually it effects the run time of my code.. it's driving me crazy! Anyways I'm not sure anyone can help out on this one but I was wondering if anyone else has noticed this behavior or if it is something specific to my setup. Hi, just to answer your question you are not totaly alone. For some reason, one of my computers (the laptop) reacts the same way whenever I am doing an updatedb or copying a large file from one disk to another. I am then left with 4M of ram out of 512M. I do not understand why, and have been looking for solutions in the kernel (the newer kernels have a memory limit option (it's in the GRsecurity patch), but have not been successful). What strikes me is that only the laptop behaves this way although it has about the same specs as my desktop (Laptop : P4B 1.7, 512 M Ram, Desktop : P4B2.4, 1G Ram). If anyone knows why... The configure part of the emerge refers exclusively to i686... Well, I've looked everywhere I can think of, nothing seems to be the problem, hoping someone here can help. Thanks in advance, Paul. I'va had the exact same problem. OK, you must wonder where it comes from : simply enough, from the stage3 installs which uses a i586 optimized bootstrap for compatibility issues. You can see that in your /usr directory, you should see a directory named : i586-pc-linux-gnu. You need to bootstrap again (I did, worked like a charm, ALTHOUGH you should be warned that this will overwrite /etc/group, /etc/passwd, /etc/rc.conf and /etc/make.conf if you do not set the CONFIG_PROTECT variable properly). Re: [gentoo-user] Can Linux web browsing be a complete experience?
Alan wrote: Why isn't there an out-of-the-box Linux solution that's as good as Windows? Actually, if you really think about it, it neither is in Windows. Last time I installed one, I had to go to Macromedia (Flash), Adobe (Acrobat-Reader), Apple (Quicktime), RealNetworks (Realplayer), Sun (Java) to get the needed plugins. Oh, yeah, and to Microsoft (Mediaplayer). Yes, and no. In windows it seems a little nicer because it's a lot better (IMHO) about installing the plugins... you get a prompt saying hey, install xyz, you click ok, it grinds for a few minutes, goes through an install wizard, and then you go back to the original window and voila! it's there and working. Some would consider this a security problem. I admit that mozilla/mozillafirebird is a lot better in this respect now though. You no longer have to restart moz to get plugins recognized, simply copy the files into your plugins dir and reload and they work. You can also have them installed for all users, as root. As to answer the original question, no, I don't think that the browsing experience is quite as good in linux (yet), and while there are solutions (ximian desktop 2 is a very nice out of the box experience, and redhat 8/9 weren't all that bad) it's not everywhere. When Internet Explorer first came out, they had a lot of web pages and plug-ins that didn't work for them. Today, it's not Linux that has difficulties with web browsing. It's everyone who is not running IE4.x or higher on a Windows 98 or higher machine. All Macintosh users have similar sob stories. A couple of other things that are against linux in the whole out of the box experience in general. First of all while macromedia has indeed sold their soul to the devil, so have most of the other companies, but the important ones (flash, pdfs, java, etc) do work. Another thing is because linux is a multi-user system as compared to XP (much as they'd like to show different), you can't just install the acrobat reader plugin as a user, you still have to SU to root, emerge the plugin or run the file, wait for it to finish, and then go back to your user. Mac OS/X seems to have it right with running as a user with SU privileges all the time and then popping up a please enter your user password whenever a program needs to be installed. Not running as root, but running close enough to it that you can tasks like installing software much easier. I wish linux was a bit more like this. I am very used to popping up a root shell when I need to do things, but I don't think I should *have* to do this. First, this is a security item in Linux that you will not easily get around, nor should you. Second, what you are referring to smells a lot like SUDO only wrapped up in something cute. I do not want any idiot on my machines able to install anything that they want to. I have inexperienced and gullible users on my network and I know full well that they would be too quick to install every kind of spyware and other crap if they were only given the chance. And then they would come bitching to me about how their system is totally unusable because they have 100 spams a day and everything keeps crashing. No, Linux is usable as a browsing platform. It works fine on so many sites that it's really a minority. Java applications puke. That's not the fault of Java, that is the fault of a shitty programmer who is still in chapter 8 of Jave for Dummies. Java is a very nice, but dangerous, plug-in. As for plugins, even better: Why not make a mozilla admin user? You don't have to. The ebuild will include whatever is needs no matter what your USE flag is. The Use flag is for adding optional build features. For example, if a app can be built with gnome but doesn't have to and you have -gnome the gnome features are not included in the build. If you put gnome then the gnome features will be built in. After I hit OK, gdm restarts an re-presents me the login screen. Login via gdm using root works fine, gnome starts up normally. Starting X as jh via startx /usr/bin/gnome-session works equally fine. RE: [gentoo-user] Can Linux web browsing be a complete experience?
Hi, Thanks for all the great answers everyone. As is generally true for a lot of these threads, I wish I would have used slightly different wording in my original email, but that's OK as I think we got at least part way to the answers I was looking for. The 'Out of the Box' comment comes more from my marketing side than my technical side. I have no problem getting a little bit dirty and being hands on to make it work. I'm just looking for the Gentoo page that explains what to do! To summarize what I think I heard: (Please correct me if I'm wrong) 1) There are a number of additional packages that a user can install under Gentoo to make Mozilla more capable of handling the data type I run into. Jason gave a starter list as: emerge netscape-plugger emerge netscape-flash emerge mplayerplug-in While (for me) this didn't work for even mp3 files (Mozilla just hung saying something about loading a movie player or something like that) the response gets right to the sort of answer I wanted, which was: emerge these packages, change these settings here and there, and enjoy! 2) We need a better list somewhere on what should be emerged to operate more at the Windows level when browsing. It may not be perfect, but we should be able to say something like Audio links - emerge XXX edit these preferences (mp3, ogg, etc.) Video links - emerge YYY edit these preferences (avi, mpeg, etc.) File links - emerge ZZZ edit these preferences (pdf, txt, etc.) 3) The comments on security and about why it cannot work automatically today are really great, and I hadn't even considered that part. Linux does provide extra security. Sometimes it gets a bit in the way of the simple user types like me, but that's OK with a good list like in #2 above. 4) I'll add that after reading here, I do get that comparing Mozilla to IE6 isn't a fair comparison. I understand that IE has billions of dollars behind it. A more fair comparison would be Mozilla on a Windows box, or Netscape on a Windows box, with Mozilla on a Linux box. Can these two be brought into parity? Again, I wasn't looking to find out anything other than does web browsing really 'work' for others in the Linux world. It doesn't work that well for me, but more because multimedia support in Linux just isn't as advanced as other platforms and it's hard to know, not being a developer, what to load and how to get it all tied together. I do think this would be a useful HOWTO for a Gentoo page some day. Bugger! :) I think an extra /tmp partition is extremely useful, because I don't want THAT much writing-activity on my / partition. Writing is always error prone, especially in a case of spontaneous shutdown (which can happen at a laptop quite easy - working without AC-adaptor) and a process currently writing to a file in the /tmp breaks my complete / filesystem. So I can simply reformat my tmp-partition and go on like nothing has happend ;) I think it would be great to fix it in the baselayout / baseinstall or even mention it in the install documentation (I hope I have not overread it ;)) ). I know a couple of people who use this partition layout. Then I added +ssl +nls +mozilla -ldap -doc +spell -pda -ipv6 - kerberos +kde to my USE in /etc/make.conf Why did you do this??? I was under the impression that I'd have to. Well, apparently I was wrong. How do I figure out which USE variables are required for any given program to emerge? Brett touched on this a bit, but I thought I would try to make this a little more clear. Absolutely no USE flags are _required_, they are all optional. Some are turned on by default, and others are off by default. You can find out what use flags you are using by running this command: emerge info | grep USE setting your USE flags in make.conf adds onto the default useflags. for example, arts is enabled by default, but I do not wish to have support for it, so I've put -arts into USE in /etc/make.conf. Basically, putting XYZ will enable support for XYZ if the program you are emerging has support for it. As for the line you did, the -v tag is verbose. After each ebuild listing, it tells you what USE flags will affect the program. +ssl +nls +mozilla -ldap -doc +spell -pda -ipv6 -kerberos +kde That means that evolution will be compiled with support for ssl, nls, mozilla, spell, and kde, but it will not have any features for ldap, doc, pda, ipv6, or kerberos. You really would never need to change your use flags, but it is often a good idea, say, if you buy a palm pilot, you can put pda in your USE flag so some programs will have support for it. then I emerged evolution with: ACCEPT_KEYWORDS=~x86 emerge evolution It installed fine but when I try to run it, it just shows the splash screen, nothing else. What did I do wrong? Did you have a previous version of evolution set up for your user? No. I nerver succeeded installing a functioning version. Some people have trouble getting it to work, and others have none. Unfortunately I'm not using evolution, so I can't really comment too much on it. it might be some conflicting setting in your ~/evolution directory. try moving it to evolution.backup and seeing if evo runs then. You'll need to start a sound server. When using KDE arts (which is a sound server) is started. arts puts all thos programs that want to use sound together. Mozilla offers to save the file. 3) At this point, if there was a link to some web page that has known associations and what needs to be downloaded/emerged to use the data type, then I could open a xterm and as root go make it happen. i can see your point, but i would think that your solution would require a considerable amount of work on mozilla's end rather than gentoo's. so while i might agree that your solution is a good one, methinks that this list is not your intended forum. initially though i was trying to touch on the idea of an out of the box setup for a web browser. something that would setup/install all the required stuff you'd want for your browsing without overcomplicating the USE system and this IS something gentoo could impliment (how easily i suppose would be something the developers would have to talk about) -- i don't know exactly what democracy is. but we need more of it. - anonymous chinese student, during protests in tianamen square, beijing, 1989 -- [EMAIL PROTECTED] mailing list

No, I understand that. And there's nothing wrong at all with doing it at the emerge level. If we had another setup page in the Use Docs area about setting up your browser, than that page could have all the know associations, which would grow over time. When I hit something my browser doesn't know about, I would just go look there first instead of asking this like 'What do I emerge to all Mozilla to look at this file type.' initially though i was trying to touch on the idea of an out of the box setup for a web browser. something that would setup/install all the required stuff you'd want for your browsing without overcomplicating the USE system and this IS something gentoo could impliment (how easily i suppose would be something the developers would have to talk about) Yes, I support your idea. [gentoo-user] Re: updatedb
Jonathan H.. very interesting, the system in question is also a laptop. I basically moved slocate to cron.weekly, but this isn't much of a fix to the problem. If I ever figure it out I will post a message to the list. I don't think it is kernel related however as I am using the same kernel as I was previous to my update and I don't recall this behavior.. and I would definitely have noticed! The service works, but if you start an ssh session say with: # ssh hex /usr/local/mozilla/mozilla The app opens fine, but ocassionally (and annoyingly!) the job becomes stopped and the app will hang. [gentoo-user] Very odd problem
I have a Gentoo box, (1.4rc3), where, for the last week, various random programs have been disappearing. I don't mean whole packages, if that were the case I could narrow it down to a problem in portage, but is it various random executables. Examples: /usr/bin/emerge /usr/bin/xargs /usr/bin/perl emerge is a symlink, and perl and xargs are actual binaries. I simply had to re-emerge the package they were in to restore them, but I could find _no_ reason why they are disappearing. I've run chkrootkit on this box.. nada, but again I can't really see how (more why), it would have been rooted... there's a pretty strong firewall in place, and there are other boxes that are easier to aquire, within the DMZ. Finally, it's not a lack of hard disk space. I run about 10 gentoo boxes, each running a different 'version' (read: age) of gentoo, and this one is one of the most solid so far, (with regards to how little help portage has required to keep the system up to date). The only oddity I have seen was just now as I downgraded gawk, portage finished the emerge, then stated this: (from memory:) --- Cleaning package x11-base/xfree-3.4k-r2 ... (unmerges xpm-3.4k-r2) ... done. --- That's not a typo, it really said xfree-3.4k-r2 I'll post a bug, but I just wanted to mention that here. Does anyone have any pointers? Well, apparently I was wrong. How do I figure out which USE variables are required for any given program to emerge? Thanks, Brett! Thank you, Chris! Now I understand. Took quite a while ... I'm getting old ... ;-) then I emerged evolution with: ACCEPT_KEYWORDS=~x86 emerge evolution It installed fine but when I try to run it, it just shows the splash screen, nothing else. Same thing. Just the splash appears, and it has to be killed to remove it. Closing doesn't work either. BTW, galeon doesn't start either. Is there a connection? The [2]+ Stopped occurs as a side effect of issuing ls - no kb interrupts sent. No! the first ls has completed, thus the job has finished, thus it has stopped. It hadn't completed, I was just pointing out that (completed|finished)!=stopped. I never disputed that it was stopping as opposed to completing, I was merely mentioning explaining how the shell printed it's stopped response, and that you could run it _not_ in the background to possibly find out the reason why it was stopping.. does it only happen when run in the background? No, this is an issue which only affects background ssh processes. If I run the same app locally, or in the foreground, no problem. Thing is I often want to log into a machine, open a few X apps in the background and check things out, close them down and log out. I just noticed tho that this effects another machine here running redhat a different version of ssh so maybe this is a 'feature'. The -f switch redirects stdin from /dev/null, which is fine for the boxes here which don't need a password but less good for remote ones where I don't control the login method. I've not long had bandwidth here to make it worth running X apps remotely so this has only just become an issue so I guess I'll go check in the ssh archives see if it's been a problem for anyone else. It indicated the point in the process when it happened, I wasn't trying to say that that's the cause of the problem. I've also just checked and the problem is independent of the shell - csh shows the same behaviour. [gentoo-user] 2.5.71-mm loosing mouse on KVM switch
Hi there. Anyone got a 2.5.* system on a KVM with another box? I have a problem that when I switch between the other box and my linux box, the mouse pointer will sometimes become lost (won't move) when you switch to linux (or sometimes windows). In linux I used to be able to fix this by simple hitting ctrl-alt-f1 to go to the console and then alt-f7 to get back to X and the cursor would be back (windows required a standby-restart or a reboot). Since upgraded to the latest mm-sources (trying to get my nforce2 board to work nicely for me) when I go from one box to the other via the KVM the mouse cursor is lost and won't come back, even with a full restart of X. Only a reboot will fix it. I'm assuming it's something to do with the new kbd/mouse subsystems that are in 2.5.*. Anyone else have this problem or know of how to fix it? The KVM is a two port Hawking if that means anything. Regards, alan -- Alan [EMAIL PROTECTED] - http://arcterex.net There are only 3 real sports: bull-fighting, car racing and mountain climbing.
