OK I ran MCEBuddy which did a good job with PBS recordings...but then 
I had no problem re-encoding them to mkz. But when it came to normal 
MC encrypted channel encoding MCEBuddy was not able to do anything 
with them. It can't be COX encrypting the recordings because I have 
no problem recording SD with my Laptop Hauppauge TV tuner recorder, 
and I can even record HD broadcasts right off the cable box using 
their HD PVR through a component connection at 1080i. But all of 
that, except PBS, is encrypted when I record with MC using my 
SiliconDust tuners. So it has to be MC doing the encryption.  So how 
come it works for you Chris.. or what am I doing wrong? Thanks m

Found it.  There is another key:
HKCU\Microsoft\Windows NT\Current Version\Winlogon

That had a string value shell set to cmd.exe.  Removed it and I'm back.

[H] Windows 7 recovering corrupted registry

In XP, I can boot to PE or recovery console and copy the registry 
files back from the System Volume Information folder to 
\windows\system32\config.  Is there a way to do this in Win7 from the 
recovery console?  I know I can access the shadow copy versions, but 
since I can't boot to Windows, I don't seem to be able to access these.

Has the username been changed?  Try creating a new user and testing 
that and changing the name of a user that is working properly.


The username hadn't been changed (it was the one from the Windows 
install) but when I created a new username, it worked fine.  I then 
deleted the first username and recreated it and it worked fine 
too.  Ahh, Microsoft - life would be so boring without your little tricks. :)

I haven't used anti-virus, anti-spyware, or third party firewalls for
a number of years now. I don't even patch unless I am effected
directly with the issue. I do my service packs though. Been fine for
years. What's my secret? I will not use Microsoft for email or web and
I am behind a router.

I know people say 'omg you don't do what you are supposed to - run this
security suite and patch everyday or you will get viruses'. Guess
what. I'm clean and doing fine. Can everyone run like this? Maybe not
but I am sure the more savvy users here can. Have to use your heads.

On the computer where my data is I do use AV, Spy and Mall ware and 
some sort of software firewall to warn me about out go. But on the 
rest of my PCs I run clean .. just what the OS has, because they have 
special purpose and I don't do anything dangerous with them, in fact 
I rarely use a web browser... if something does goes wrong I just 
restore the image file. On my laptop I run a lot of stuff from a VM 
through a VPN and start over every day.

The highest disk score for a magnetic drive I've seen is indeed 5.9...and
that's on 7.2k SATA, 10k SATA, or 15k SAS. My 2x Intel G2 SSD array gets a
7.9 (highest possible) though. A single Intel G2 seems to get around a 7.7,
and the OCZ Vertex gets around a 7.3.

you could connect using machine names without problems.

There is only the 'homegroup' on the Win7 box.  According to the help, 
which I haven't tried to dispute yetonly a Win7 machine can join the 
homegroup.  The WinXP machine shows up every once in a while, but I 
think the main idea is to use the IP address and that should do it.


I probably made a mistake on the install when I told it that I was in a 
home environment.  I probably would have gotten options for different 
workgroups if I had chosen 'business'.  Still might be able to change it...

I'm still running the Win7 RC build 1700, I think (it's on my home 
machine).  It seems that if I reboot I may or may not have internet 
connection.  Sometimes I'll have to reboot 3 times to get the internet 
connection to appear.  Once it does, I'm good to go...but...  And once I 
do have "network access" I can always see my laptop downstairs, which 
runs XP, but I can't see my other PC running XP which sits next to my 
Win7 PC. Argh!  I'm probably not doing sharing correctly somehow on the 
second PC.


Also, I still have problems using files on a portable HD between XP and 
Vista and Win7 computers.  The old "read only" BS.

By IP address, DNS, or WINS? If IP works then it's likely a master browser election 
issue like the old days. Disabling the master browser on the XP box would solve that, 
so would putting up a DNS server and not relying on WINS.

works if there is a DNS issue. Workgroup the same I assume?

Convert Win7 Ultimate to Pro or Home Premium

Here's the crux of the matter: If you put a DVD containing Win7 Ultimate 
in your PC and run the installer — either by booting from the disc or 
running the setup program from inside Windows — you end up with Win7 
Ultimate. No surprises there.


However, if you first delete a tiny file named ei.cfg before making the 
installation DVD, the Win7 installer will give you the choices shown in 
Figure 1.

install.


In fact, no matter which Win7 installation DVD you have — Ultimate, Pro, 
or Premium — if you delete the ei.cfg file from the disc, you'll be 
offered the same choices and can install any version of Windows 7.


At the moment, only a small number of people have received a physical 
DVD containing Windows 7 Ultimate. Instead, most current Win7 users 
downloaded an .iso file, which includes everything on the Windows 7 
Ultimate DVD: boot settings, file-structure details, etc. You burn the 
.iso file to a DVD. Then you either boot your PC from the DVD or run the 
setup program within an older version of Windows to kick the Win7 
installer into gear.


If you have a Windows 7 Ultimate .iso file, it's easy to delete ei.cfg. 
First, get a 30-day trial version of the gBurner utility, which is 
available from the program's download page at CNET's Download.com. Then 
install and run gBurner, open the Windows 7 .iso file, and delete (or 
rename) \sources\ei.cfg. Piece o' cake, although it can take 20 minutes 
to save the altered .iso file.


You can then use either gBurner or Alex Feinman's ISO Recorder program 
(available from Alex's site) to burn a version of the .iso file without 
ei.cfg to DVD.


What if you do have a physical Windows 7 installation DVD, but you don't 
have an .iso file? In that case, use either gBurner or ISO Recorder to 
rip the DVD into an .iso file. Then follow the instructions above to 
delete the ei.cfg file and burn a new DVD.


Get the right version of Windows 7 going now and you won't have to 
reinstall it — or pay an exorbitant price — later.

In terms of the interface itself, or that you have to install the RSAT
package to get the client? Interface wise, it doesn't bug me too
much...though it is light on many fronts. I do hate that it is tied to RSAT,
but at least it runs without having to drop in .NET DLLs and set environment
variables, etc. that is required to run the vSphere 4.0 client.

I do despise the WMI-only Hyper-V API though

correctly for mkv without registry help. Some new addons I haven't played with.

way, only the RC was available.

I'll download this sometime over the weekend. Although, I'm not ready to put

The problem is that it's home premium, which is probably OK for your 
wife or kids, but not for a HWG user. I bought a OEM version of Vista 
Home Premium for my new 64 bit build thinking there was little 
difference to warrant the additional 70 bucks that Ultimate asked 
for. I was wrong. Home premium doesn't have a User configuration in 
device manager. You have to fire up an administrator account through 
command line. Google apps won't install unless you are logged in as 
THE administrator.  Home premium won't remember network passwords. I 
have been running into lots of little zingers like this in the 8 
months I have been running Vista 64 Home Premium. But if you do 
install Home Premium I would make sure you immediately create an 
administrator account and log in as that. It is not enough to be a 
user with administrative privileges.


This time I bought two prepaid Windows 7 PRO and I didn't have to 
think about it.

there will be no mass giveaway of RTM copies to the testers.
We were also told there could be up to a 2-3 week delay before it's
available on MSDN and TechNet.

successfully been voted the RTM build just as of yesterday, and will be
available on Connect (and potentially MSDN and TechNet) on July 24. I'd be
wary of anything you might find available for download, since supposedly all
16385 ISO builds out there are 3rd party re-packs from the only leaked
copy--a VHD.

According to what I read yesterday MS decided to put ALL versions on 
one DVD this time so that an upgrade only requires a different key.

install a upgrade disk, just bugs me a little.
