I would sure appreciate any responses to the following questions regarding
student passwords when you get a chance

1. What is your procedure when a student forgets their logon password?
Who handles this request?

2. Do you maintain a list of student passwords, and if so, who do you
share that list with?

3. How often do you change student passwords?

I am just curious what other districts are doing regarding this problem. It's
not a big deal at this point in the game, but it seems to be an issue during
the first few weeks of school and of course that is when we are bombarded by a
million other things...

RE: [info-tech] Unreadable hard-drive

2010-10-01 Thread McKenney, Kurt
It's gonna kinda depend on how bad it is.

Sometimes chilling the drive can help.

Sometimes you can get away with taking the controller board off of an IDENTICAL
drive and you can get it working.

If it is critical enough, in other words worth the money, you can send it to a
drive recovery specialist. They have managed to get data off of hard drives
that have been through fires.

[info-tech] Blackberry Packet Sniffer

2010-09-30 Thread McKenney, Kurt
Ok, let's skip the android/iphone/blackberry debate...

Or not...

For business reasons I wound up getting a blackberry curve 8520, mainly so I
could use it to test and troubleshoot software and networking for the staff's
blackberries, I already have a windows phone I can use to test with.

However there are some things I need for me, and I was hoping to enlist y'alls
help in finding them.

First. I was troubleshooting a wireless connection issue and tried to use my
blackberry's wireless tools to give me info on the networks in the area. The
built in tools leave much to be desired. Does anyone know of a netstumbler or
inssider type program that will work on the blackberry?

Second, Wireshark is something I miss, a lot on this thing, a basic packet
sniffer would be nice. Any thoughts?

Memory error. I did get a copy of PrintShop 2.0, but it was not until I
tried to open the file did I find the small print Can not open previous
versions of PrintShop Files I am assuming it is an application issue as
the machine I have a clean install of PS21 has plenty of free HD and RAM
available even when the Out of Memory error is active.

If you have it installed on a machine I would like to see if the file can be
opened on your hardware. The file is 800Mb+ in size so it may be fastest to
bring the file to you.

BTW, the file is the 2010 Yearbook for one of our districts.

[info-tech] First 18 hours with an IPad...

2010-04-30 Thread McKenney, Kurt
Before we get into this, understand this is an honest no holds barred
review. I will use some rough and possibly insulting language, but if
you read it with an open mind, I think there is some valuable
information, even if it is presented rather vividly. I will likely be
submitting this same review word for word to Amazon and some other
sites.

A few years back, there was a kid who was about 14 who had an IQ of
about 40, but he could listen to a piece of music once and be able to
play it on a piano note for note. This ability really made him kind of
cool, but at the end of the day, you just can't escape that he's still
retarded.

That's the Ipad in a nutshell.

Despite that, I am giving this a solid buy recommendation for schools.
If that makes no sense, read on, and it will.

If I try to compare this to windows 7, and I will, it's kinda worthless.
The HP Slate is coming out in a couple months, and it will do everything
that an IPad does, and everything that a windows 7 laptop does, and
costs less, or about the same actually. If you are a computer geek, like
me, then the slate is a much better product.

But we use the Kindle here a lot. Mainly the kindle is used is remedial
reading and special-ed because the kindle will read aloud to a student,
showing them the word being pronounced. Like most programs of this
nature, it's got it's problems, most notably lousy inflection and
pacing. But it's no worse than anything out there, and allows virtually
any book to be used without additional processing.

The Ipad has a Kindle app, and though I haven't fully tested it, I have
no reason to think it functions any different.

Now don't get me wrong, I like the kindle, for me. But I'm not buying
for me. Sure, the battery life rocks. Two weeks of a single charge, that
is just awesome, the ability to buy through the cellular network without
buying another account? Priceless.

But the weak point on a kindle has always been it's administration.
Basically, if it's on there, the kid has access to it. That includes
google searches for porn.

On the Ipad, if I don't want a kid to surf the internet, they don't. If
I don't want them to load apps, they don't. You tube? Email? Whatever,
they don't, or should I say they can't. As you all know, keeping kids
out of where they do not belong is always a losing battle, special-ed is
even more of a challenge than the other students.

That's the cool part as far as actually useful stuff goes. Sure, there
are a lot of educational apps, great, great. The predictive text feature
is awful from what I've seen of it, I'm working on installing an app
that is supposed to be much better. But really, that's the business end
of the review.

Now there's the fun stuff, or thing I should say.

Google Maps is included with the Ipad, and for a damn good reason. It
takes total advantage of the multitouch interface. This is beyond
ubercool. This one goes straight to Geek Nirvana. I fell in lust with
Google Maps, and once I showed it to my girlfriend and her daughter,
they proceeded to fight over it for an hour. If you have not tried this,
there is just no explaining how awesome this feature is. If I could plug
in GPS, it would probably throw me into a transcendental state where I
spent he next 20 years in a darkened room playing with the user
interface and creating the Church of Jobs.

Or at least until the battery died.

Ok, so here's the summary.

This is a niche market thing. It's great for schools and especially
special-ed. But if you are looking for a productive device, wait for the
HP Slate.

Despite that, I am giving this a solid buy recommendation for schools.
If that makes no sense, read on, and it will.

If I try to compare this to windows 7, and I will, it's kinda
 worthless.
The HP Slate is coming out in a couple months, and it will do
 everything
that an IPad does, and everything that a windows 7 laptop does, and
costs less, or about the same actually. If you are a computer geek,
 like
me, then the slate is a much better product.

But we use the Kindle here a lot. Mainly the kindle is used is
 remedial
reading and special-ed because the kindle will read aloud to a
 student,
showing them the word being pronounced. Like most programs of this
nature, it's got it's problems, most notably lousy inflection and
pacing. But it's no worse than anything out there, and allows
 virtually
any book to be used without additional processing.

The Ipad has a Kindle app, and though I haven't fully tested it, I
 have
no reason to think it functions any different.

Now don't get me wrong, I like the kindle, for me. But I'm not buying
for me. Sure, the battery life rocks. Two weeks of a single charge,
 that
is just awesome, the ability to buy through the cellular network
 without
 buying another account?

As you all know, keeping kids
out of where they do not belong is always a losing battle, special-
 ed is
even more of a challenge than the other students.

That's the cool part as far as actually useful stuff goes. Sure, there
are a lot of educational apps, great, great. The predictive text
 feature
is awful from what I've seen of it, I'm working on installing an app
that is supposed to be much better. But really, that's the business
 end
 of the review.

If you have not tried
 this,
there is just no explaining how awesome this feature is. If I could
 plug
in GPS, it would probably throw me into a transcendental state where I
spent he next 20 years in a darkened room playing with the user
interface and creating the Church of Jobs.

Or at least until the battery died.

 Ok, so here's the summary.

This is a niche market thing. It's great for schools and especially
special-ed. But if you are looking for a productive device, wait for
 the
 HP Slate.

Would everyone have been happier if I directly called it the idiot-savant of
the computer world?

It is very good for some what I would consider limited tasks, but almost
torture for use in many common tasks. For example, I am using this ipad for
connecting to a terminal server, and running outlook 2010. However, even though
it will do it, it is taking at least three times longer to type than it would
on my cell phone.

Further tests on the ibook and kindle apps have also proven disappointing to
the teachers who have tried it and they are not used to or willing to
compromise.

But, I still insist that it is a very usable tool.

I agree about the language, not so much about the unsolicited opinions. If
Kurt had what he considered to be an educated opinion about a potential
educational device (and one that we've been discussing quite a bit), I don't
think it's unreasonable to review it. I disagree with some of his premises
and conclusions, but that's not a problem.

Am I off-base about that? I honestly ask, because if I had an iPad in my
possession, I probably would have posted my opinions about it here, too.

I concur with Karl on this one. As much as I dislike some of the items
that I have to support, if they are for the good of the students and
the betterment of education, then I support them.

Also agree with the reminder that this list is public and that
offensive and off color remarks have no place here. This list is
incredibly useful but is not the proper forum for venting and / or
placing unsolicited critiques of new technologies.

Your precious Slate might be DBA (Dead Before Arrival). In your
review of this product did you download and use the Pages, Keynote,
or Numbers, all productivity tools? Also, it is no big secret that
you are an unabashed Apple hater so how may I ask were you objective?
Is the iPad (or any other product) perfect, heck no. Comparing a
product IN YOUR HAND to a product THAT DOES NOT EXIST is a pointless
argument. Can you do that same things on an iPad you can do on a
laptop, no. The iPad is a MOBILE device and NOT a computer. Can your
Blackberry edit videos, upload to google docs, read books to you, edit
pictures in photshop, or run Windows 7 NO it is a freakin mobile device.

Next issue, did you even look at the tools available to deploy and
control the administrative side of an iPad? The Wifi iPad goes
through the same filters as all my computers when it is here on
campus. Why is it so bad that a kid might spend some time looking at
YouTube videos? (Different Diatribe for a different day)

Now on to the next issue. It is not our job to decide what should and
shouldn't be used in education, it is our job to listen to what is
needed and make it happen. Even if the request is technically
difficult or even requires a change in firewall policies. We are here

are not the gate keepers saying what can or will be done. I suggest,
discuss, and implore but ultimately it is not my say. I want to

RE: [info-tech] Mini Computer Lab

2010-04-27 Thread McKenney, Kurt
My experience with the mobile labs is that they are popular, and kids
especially love to destroy them.

All attempts at accountability tend to be lost causes, and because the
parts are harder to replace than on desktops, they wind up becoming just
so much ballast after time.

There is also the issue of laptops, in addition to costing more than
equivalent desktops, are generally good for less time. I believe that a
laptop is engineered for 3 years while a desktop is engineered for 5,
and by converting the desktop into a dumb terminal, it can be extended
out indefinitely.

On the plus side, the minis are good for the elementary, especially the
younger kids as it is less likely to cause carpal tunnel over time due
to the size appropriate scale.

Good Morning:

I am asking thoughts from our aea and aea8 tech groups.

Would like to know your feelings on switching from a computer lab to
mobile labs in a K-5 setting. I really have mixed feelings and wanted
to get more ideas from the group. We currently have a lab of 24
desktops, we would take and put 3 in each section 3-5 in their classroom
from the computer lab. Our lab would be a lab of 24 minis on a cart.
Thanks for the feedback. Have a great day.

Since God has a sense of humor, I am now responsible for an iPad (on

I have been asked to find apps for the elementary principal, and likely
the High School, and Middle School principals, and the Superintendent to
make these paperweights into productive devices.

Ok, let's be honest, we are not going to log into the domain. We are not
going to print no matter how much they demand the ability to do so. But
is anyone using the Ipad or Itouch, and if so what apps work for you?

Fast and Good would be installing a content filtering Firewall.

Anyone have any experience with Ruckus Wireless products? I am looking
for a district wireless solution that just works and does not require a
lot of administrative time to administer. Don't really want to attend

Have looked at Xirrus and Aruba and unless you have plenty of time on

but their prices indicate that they know that. Any other ideas?

[info-tech] Exchange and acronyms be here...

2010-02-24 Thread McKenney, Kurt
Ok, so I'm rebuilding my exchange 2003 server after a bit of a nightmare
scenario involving a bad RAID controller.

I've got pretty much everything up and going, and I figure as long as
I've got everyone good and PO'd already, I might as well take some time
to get OMA (Outlook Mobile Access) up and going.

Well, I've bone everything by the book, and when that didn't work I read
the footnotes, and installed the service packs, and so here I am all

What I've got is a 403.6 error on accessing the server through the OMA

Nevermind, that IS the error you are receiving.

Open IIS, right-click the web site, and select Properties

Under the Directory Security tab, select the second button from the
top (don't remember what it is called)

Select the Granted Access option, and remove any IP addresses listed
the box. Apply changes and do an IISRESET (I think stopping and
restarting the site in question is often enough).

What I would like to know is who would be willing to attend this Round

Either reply to the list or me directly if you will be attending.

RE: [info-tech] iPad pro/con

2010-01-29 Thread McKenney, Kurt
I've investigated the specs, and put some thought into this, and I've
come to certain conclusions.

How many of you remember when the original NES came out? It was designed
and intended to be the first practical home computer. Sure, looking at
it now you may be thinking, WTF? No networking, no keyboard (virtual or
otherwise), no printer, 8 bit graphics, no word-processing, basically
nothing for which we would use a computer for now. And yet strangely, in
1985, that was all ok. We wrote letters by hand. We did double entry
bookkeeping, and the internet was something the military and a few
computer nerds at colleges played with.

Now we can do all kinds of things with computers. We can control our
homes, we can remote control ROV's, we can design mega-scrapers, we can
produce blockbuster movies. But how many people actually do these
things?

This is the computer Grandma has been waiting for.

I don't want one. I really don't. But, I think Apple may have figured
something out about the way most people use computers. They are not
looking for multitasking, they don't want to figure out the pros and
cons between one office suite and another. They are not running endless
searches based on a batch file appending to a text output. They want to
do email, look at cute kittens, and check the weather. Maybe they want
to look at pictures of the kids and of their vacation, but maybe not.

I don't think this will make a good one to one system. We demand too
much of our computers, too many oddball programs that are not going to
make it through the various official apple approved outlets, and
carrying around a laptop and an Ipad, on a personal level is not worth
it to me. Carrying around a laptop is a major PITA, I mostly do not do
it.

But I do think the Ipad, assuming it survives the copyright wars, will
be a system to take note of. I will predict the next generation will be
a more full featured system though.

Ok Tim, I will agree that you ar not a mindless fanboi of Apple's.
Actually all of the techs in the AEA are top notch, we couldn't survive
under these conditions if we weren't.

But there is something about the mindless masses and their obsession
with Apple. It's disturbing.

Last april, I met a guy who had bought an Iphone because he wanted to
run an app that allowed him to zero in a sniper rifle more quickly.
Those of you that know me know that I consider this a useful app for a
portable computer. The problem was this guy did not own a gun, but he
went on and on about how great this phone was for snipers.

I know, you're thinking this was not a healthy person, and you are
right.

But you see a lot of this sort of thing (if you ride a bike you know
it's not limited to computers), and the hype turns me off.

Ok, I haven't done all that much research into the ipad, but here's
where I see the problems being for education and pretty much anyone
else.

As I understand it, there really isn't any practical way to place
content on the ipad except through Apple approved vendors. Let's leave
out what that means for porn consumption, and consider that you will
have be regimented into approved software, and possibly content. While
you may like the software, I like the choice, it's none of their damn
business how I use my computer.

Also, I understand this thing will not multi-task. What's up with that?
Does that mean I can't run my browser while doing a batch convert of
pics while watching a movie and monitoring my email? If so, did I just
step into a time warp to 1993?

What's the deal with no SD slot? SD is kinda the default medium of the
modern age. I have SD in my camera, my phone, my TV, and my next car
will probably have it. Apple is not looking all that cutting edge.

Honestly the new MSI tablet is looking way better, and that doesn't hold
a candle to the Levono offering.

Kurt,

Yeah, I'm totally with you that the iPad isn't right for many people or
applications. And I'm also with you about the fanboy effect. But
there are fanboys on all sides. I've been reading reviews of this thing
on respectable tech websites that are basically, It won't do blank,
so it's a complete POS. And they literally used the term POS.
Please. It's designed to do certain things well at the expense of other
things. If it doesn't do what you need, then by all means don't buy it.

The App Store and approved apps business is a double-edged sword. It is
limiting, but assures to some extent that things work seamlessly. I
have an iPod Touch and a BlackBerry Storm, both very similar in terms of
hardware (actually, I think the BB is better in terms of hardware, but
that's for another discussion). I download a LOT of apps on both of
them. The Touch always works totally flawlessly. Apps never crash,
things switch quickly and smoothly, videos and music play flawlessly,
etc. Not the case on the BB. Constantly finding apps that don't work
properly, it crashes frequently (requiring me to pull the battery out to
reset it), and when using it as an internet tether, it's constantly
disconnecting for no reason. Also, the user interface is clumsy, slow
and jerky compared to the Touch. Videos and music don't play as well.
Etc. HOWEVER, I don't have to go through the BB App World to install
stuff. So, it's a matter of what's important to you: freedom to put
whatever damn app you want on the thing, or the assurance that the ones
you do won't screw up (too badly). There are legitimate complaints
about the closed architecture of the Touch/iPhone, but there is a reason
for it, too. A smooth, seamless experience is something that Apple is
going for, and that Apple users appreciate. Your mileage may vary.

I don't give a crap what anybody chooses to buy and use. Getting into a
flame war over platforms is like watching teenagers going Ford RULEZ -
Chevy SUXXX!111one~!!. Waste of time. Believe me, I see a bit
of the fanboy thing when I go to an Apple seminar and open up my HP/Win7
laptop. Like I have to apologize for not needing more than what a $600
laptop can do for me. But I also resent it when people imply that Apple
users are so dumb they'll happily pay too much money for crap that
doesn't work. There are people like that in all camps.

Believe me, I would LOVE to be able to say, From now on, it's all
Linux, and screw the corporations altogether. :-D

run an app that allowed him to zero in a sniper rifle more quickly.

What's the deal

RE: [info-tech] iPAD and 1-to-1

2010-01-27 Thread McKenney, Kurt

All things considered, especially the Iphone, you know, the end all beat all of
all things everywhere and everywhen until people actually start using it and
find out it doesn't do half the stuff they want without continuing to pay for
more stuff that they shouldn't have to, and even then they have to tell
themselves they are paying for image and that it's worth it at twice the price
even if they can't make a phone call with a phone

I don't hold out a lot of hope for the new Icrap.

That's just my opinion.

We have used Skype with success from long term hospitals and other
continents.

I'm not all that familiar with Mac's but a headset would be a solid
investment for the student. A projector or a big screen monitor seems
appropriate for the classroom. The classroom should be able to get by
with a simple condenser microphone, and if there is a built in camera
you should be set.

RE: [info-tech] Personal Wireless Devices

2010-01-14 Thread McKenney, Kurt

Official school policy is that the network is a community resource. This means
that if a person beings in a laptop, they should be able to connect to the
internet though not any other network resources.

This is not as much of a PITA as you might think, it is however not something I

Okay everyone,

I knew the day was going to come, I just did not know when. It has
arrived. We are having a meeting to determine whether to allow
Personal Wireless Devices on our network or not.

I am asking for some assistance from anyone willing to share.

Here is what I am asking for

1. Do you allow outside wireless devices to access your network?

2. If so, why? If not, Why not?

I am on the fence here and want to present logical arguments for and
against both so that the Admin team can make an informed decision to
the board who can then make the policy.

Thanks all.

I guess my view of a committee is that it should NOT be a group of
people
all trying to come to a consensus on everything. It should be a group
of
people, each with the power to act independently, keeping each other
informed of what they're all doing and trying to stay on the same page,

moving in the same direction toward common goals.

While there may be some disagreement on the practicality and
usefulness of committees, they are required by the State in some areas
for the State visit. While not currently mandated, the technology
committee is very much recommended by the Site Visit Teams as per
instructions from the State DE. I would recommend setting up one that
has an Administrator, Board Member, Faculty Member, and a Community
Member.

I really like the way that Layne described the setup in Sioux City.
That seems like a very good way to go. My only fear is that the once a

Teachers (speaking as a teacher) non the less.

Just sayin...

RE: [info-tech] Computer repair..

2009-12-08 Thread McKenney, Kurt
Ok, after the hard drive disposal question from days of yore, I think
everyone knows I'm always up for a little creatively applied mayhem. But
this reminds me of the early Compaq days where their laptops would just
cease to work after the warranty, and you could pick them up for next to
nothing, open them up, reseat all the connectors, and resell them for
massive profit.

I so miss the 90's.

Anyway, at a guess, the video chipset is poorly soldiered onto the
board, and we all know they get hot, so over time they manage to work
their way loose. A little applied heat, and you have just temporarily
resoldiered the chips back in place.

In other words, expect to hear from them again.

Found this on a blog (Tom Hafemann) and had to re-post

Jim

Hey All,

I have fixed, repaired, and engineered many computer systems over the
past 17 years. I am often learning new things. It is a lot of fun and
quite entertaining, especially for someone who is OCD like me. :)

Recently, something new and strange came across my desk.

It started out like a normal project. A fairly new laptop computer that
had a bad video card. One long beep followed by two short beeps. As
most of you may know, laptop computers have most everything integrated
onto the motherboard. So, as I expected, I was looking at a motherboard
replacement.

This was an HP dv9825nr. As I started looking for a motherboard, I was
seeing $350ish dollars. I took this laptop apart. WHAT A MESS. I
stopped counting at 60 screws, and I still hadn't gotten the motherboard
out of the plastic yet. It took nearly 30 minutes just to get the
motherboard out of the plastic.

As I talked with the customer, spending that kind of money on a repair
was just not worth it. If you add the cost of the motherboard, labor,
and the fact that the computer is about 2 years old, it might be worth
investing in another laptop.

In my search I found some unusual repair methods, particularly geared to
motherboard repair for the nvidia video chipset and the Lenovo T41.
There is this process called reflow where you heat the motherboard
with a propane torch or heat gun to fix the video chipset problems. WTH
is up with that. Next they will be showing the process of using a
hammer to fix any keyboard.

However, I saw a bunch of these articles, and after consulting with the
customer, we decided to give it a try. After all, what was the worst
that could happen, bbq motherboard?

So, I went down to the local hardware store and rented a heat gun. I
protected all of the plastic components with aluminum foil so they
wouldn't melt and began to heat the motherboard. I did this for about
10 minutes. I let it sit overnight.

I then began the tedious process of putting this silly thing back
together. I had to undo it 4-5 times simply because I forgot to fish
some wire through or attach something. This is perhaps the worse laptop
I have ever taken apart.

Anyway, I got it all back together and wouldn't you know it, IT WORKED.
Well I'll be dog gone.

So now, I have a new tool to add to my computer repair kit. 1 heat gun.

Mitch,
It sounds like a possible driver issue. XP came out back in 2001, before
SATA and solid state drives. Maybe you just need mass storage drivers
for
your netbook and press F6 on boot from the CD. If the CD worked even a
little bit, it sounds like you have a work ext. CD-ROM that you can boot
from. If you get a screen where it finds no hard drive, it is a driver
issue.

Ok, from personal experience there is an unwritten policy that I help
the staff with anything that benefits the school.

For example. If a teacher is taking a class that will affect their
ability to interact with the kids, I help them deal with the various
technical aspects of that class assuming that I have time. If however I
do not have time, then they must wait until I do. If they refuse to wait
until I do have time.

There's an old saying.

Subject: [info-tech] Tech Support for Outside Endeavors

I have been asked by our superintedent to find out what other schools do
in the following hypothetical situations.

1. A teacher has been employed by the state outside of their regular
school contract to develop curriculum for the state. The teacher
encounters a software issue while developing said curriculum, and asks
for technical support from the school district's IT personel during the
regular school day.

2. A teacher is working on their administrative degree. They encounter
an issue accessing the university's library portal while at school
during the contract day. They seek assistance from the school district's
IT personel to fix said issue.

Things to remember:

I charge $60-$80 an hour for outside-my-contract technical support.

The distrcit does not allow me to work on my outside-contract-hours jobs
while here at work.

I do not use school-owned equipment to complete any of these
outside-contract-hours jobs.

The issues encountered were not 'quick fixes' or simple advice.

Some of our tech team thinks we should create some sort of policy to
regulate such situations, others do not. We would like to see what other
districts are doing in similar situations if anything.

[info-tech] Terminal Services Question 2

2009-09-24 Thread McKenney, Kurt
Ok, as long as the subject is terminal servers, I am having a nagging problem
with ours. We're running 2008 standard as a terminal server, and it fixed 99%
of the problems with 2003 tha we had. Flash, and darn near everything else
works.

However it did create one issue. We have about 50 computers logged on to a
single profile. Somewhere in that mess somehow the only available printer is
losing it's default status. This is a bigger problem than it sounds because
even though we are able to go right in from any of these machines and set it
back to default, this is happening sometimes a dozen times a day.

First, does anuyone have any idea how this is happening?

Second, and most important, any ideas on how to stop it?

only person in 20 miles that can actually comprehend all of those terms
simultaneously.) they're fast, stable, and have so much room I'm at a loss as
to what to do with all of it... Until the virtualization project starts.

But there is a problem.

We've been using the usertool provided by the AEA for years and we love it.
It's easy, it's fast, and as long as the relevant personnel remember to use it,
it makes life so much easier. Unfortunately the version we have is apparently
incompatible with a 64bit OS, and it is way too late to change back to 32bit.

Is anyone aware of a replacement utility? I'd love to say price is no object,
but I am willing to pay a reasonable amount for a user friendly tool.

I'm at home now, so I'm not sure of the specifics. Scott provided this tool for
me years ago when I converted us off of a Novell system. Basically it sets up
and maintains the users, profiles, basic permissions, and basic user group.

I'm not sure what tool you are talking about. Do you have additional
information about it?

It may be possible to port the tool to 64-bit land, or maybe I can
recommend a good replacement.

Students who are NIMAS eligible - meaning blind, visually impaired,
physically disabled or have an organic reading disability, qualify to
receive textbooks, core reading material in the format this is best for
them. It may be e-text, audio, Braille or large print. The Iowa Dept
of the Blind does the conversions free for you.

Other students who don't qualify under the Chaffee amendment or NIMAS,
still by law, are to have their textbooks the first day of school in the
format that is best for them, but the schools are responsible for
creating/supplying the materials. www.bookshare.org is a good starting
point. Or as Jackie said, contact the publishers. They are under a lot
of pressure to create digital/audio textbooks right now by everyone.

Ok, we have had the best luck with the Mimio http://www.mimio.com/ solid
technology, good price, and though it doesn't have the highest rated lpi
scan, you're not going to be doing detail work on the Sistine Chapel
with it.

For Document Cameras, the best bang for the buck we've found in the Elmo
TT-02s http://www.amazon.com/TT-02S-USB-2-0-SLOT-LIGHT/dp/B000VK5BMG
shop around, the price varies by vendor and it changes often. Our
teachers love them, and they are useful in ways that the old overhead
projectors are not. For example, putting a big picture book under one
and just being able to project it on the screen or whiteboard.

As for projectors, remember, none of these work without a projector.
We're pretty sold on Epson for general usage.

We are working towards ordering interactive whiteboards for our
elementary classrooms.

I have reread the emails from those that have or are planning to add
these to their schools.

If any of you could give an update on where you are with the interactive
whiteboards - which ones you are using, what you recommend, how they are
being used, and any warnings before ordering these.

I know a couple of teachers have mentioned the document camera to me but
I think it would be a modernized overhead projector.

Our superintendent attended a national conference, attended a
demonstration of an interactive whiteboard and returned saying he wants
them put in all of the elementary classrooms.

Appreciate any help, it does get confusing when researching the various
ones.

RE: [info-tech] Fw:

2009-04-06 Thread McKenney, Kurt
If I really want to wipe a drive, I take it down to the metal shop and
use a cutting torch to reduce it to slag. I've done this 3 times in 12
years. It has the downside of not being able to use it on anything else,
however I guarantee this technique will prevent any known data recovery
technique.

Ok, a Ouija board might help. But can you imagine doing all those 0's
and 1's?

It's been awhile since we had to wipe a drive. Our current device, Sonix
by Logicube, used for creating an imagine can also wipe it to DOD
standards. It runs for about $2,000 and cleans one machine at a time..

Have a good week to all,

Q. I am concerned with the information that may be left on the hard
drives even

though we did a complete wipe, what do you do to insure me that my
information

is safe?

A. We take this very seriously. We start by using our in house Veridan
Hard

drive de-gausser. This unit will 'fry' a hard drive in roughly 5
seconds, and

any drive up to 500mb.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but 500 Megabyte drives really aren't an issue
for any of us...

Once again this year during Earth Week, April 20th thru April 24th
Phoenix E-Waste Solutions LLC in Marshalltown Iowa will be holding an
E-Cycling Drive for Schools located throughout all of Iowa. This
E-Cycling drive is geared towards reducing and diverting toxic wastes
from area landfills.

Recycling Fee Schedule:

CRT Computer Monitors: $6.00 Each

Flat Pannel Computer Monitors: $5.00 each

Desktop Printers: $2.00 each

PC's, Miscellanious items such as: Keyboards, mice, speakers, cables,
overhead projectors are accepted at no charge.

Collection will take place during the week of April 20th. Items must be
palletized and wrapped for trucking. Please contact Brett or Mike with
Phoenix E-Waste at 1-641-753-7200 or e-mail us at
pesoluti...@iowatelecom.net to schedule a pickup or for further
questions.

I'm sure a few of you will have questions concerning e-waste recycled
through

us. Hopefully I can cover them all in this short E-Mail

Q. What happens to our 'stuff' once it has arrived at your facility?

A. We break everything down into roughly 8 categories-

Computers

Computer Monitors

TV's

Printers

Miscellaneous Items (VCR's, Radio's, Recording Device's, typewriters,
things

like this)

Keyboards

Mice

Flat Screen Monitors

From there, each category is once again broke down completely by

de-manufacturing everything in house. By the time we are done, we have

roughly 16 commodities ready for shredding/smelting or re-use.

This physically destroys the media disk located
inside

the drive. This deems the drive inoperable and unusable. From there,
we cage

drives up and transport to an undisclosed shredding facility right here
in

Iowa. We then recover the aluminum scrap for breakage.

Q. What happens to our CRT Glass? Do you recycle it on site, and are
you

permitted to recycle these items?

A. As I noted before, we de-manufacture everything in house. CRT Tubes
are

binned, weighed, and shipped to Doe Run, St Louis Mo for crushing and
lead

extraction. We call this Glass-to-Glass recycling.

This really sounded familiar to me.

Dakota tribal wisdom says that when you discover you are riding a dead horse,
the best strategy is to dismount. However, in IT discussions we often try other
strategies with dead horses, including the following:

1. Buying a stronger whip.
2. Changing riders.
3. Say things like, This is the way we have always ridden this horse.
4. Appointing a committee to study the horse.
5. Arranging to visit other sites to see how they ride dead horses.
6. Increasing the standards to ride dead horses.
7. Appointing a tiger team to revive the dead horse.
8. Creating a training session to increase our riding ability.
9. Comparing the state of dead horses in todays environment.
10. Change the requirements declaring that This horse is not dead.
11. Hire contractors to ride the dead horse.
12. Harnessing several dead horses together for increased speed.
13. Declaring that No horse is too dead to beat.
14. Providing additional funding to increase the horse's performance.
15. Do a Cost Analysis study to see if contractors can ride it cheaper.
16. Purchase a product to make dead horses run faster.
17. Declare the horse is better, faster and cheaper dead.
18. Form a quality circle to find uses for dead horses.
19. Revisit the performance requirements for horses.
20. Say this horse was procured with cost as an independent variable.
21. Promote the dead horse to a supervisory position.
