[LegacyUG] RTF reports

2008-06-18 Thread Jan Roberts
I have just noticed a few additional things with the Descendant Narrative
Report when I create it as an rtf file. Although I have selected to have
page number and compiler information etc. printed as a footer these do NOT
appear in the rtf version. They appear in the screen / printer option, and
also in the pdf option. However, I need to edit just about every report I
create, so those options are not viable for me. Has anyone else noticed the
same behaviour?

Cheers,

Jan

Re: [LegacyUG] Source Citation Original Marriage Cert

2008-06-18 Thread Penny

Denise, I think I'm going to have to disagree on this question with others
who have replied thus far.

Birth and death certificates, at least in Texas, are now and have always
been handled a little differently than marriage certificates. I don't know
if this holds true for other states - probably not in all of them.

I have three original "marriage certificates" from the State of Texas: my
own, my parents, and my paternal grandparents.I also have a certified
copy of my own marriage cert. and am, therefore, able to compare to see the
differences.

In Texas, these are what are issued as "marriage licenses". Couple goes to
the County Clerk to get one; once the prerequisites are met, it's signed &
issued by said County Clerk, and the couple takes it with them to whomever
is going to perform the wedding ceremony. The person who performs the rites
(whether minister or other) then signs and fills in the date and location of
the ceremony and he/she sends it back to the issuing County Clerk for
recording. The Co. Clerk then records it - (by making an exact transcript
that looks very much like the original except that the signatures (of the
minister/JP and the County Clerk) are typed in instead of actually signed.
The Clerk then mails the original back to the couple. When a certified copy
is later issued, it's not a photocopy of the original, it's a copy of the
transcribed record held in the Clerk's office (duly signed & stamped by the
current County Clerk or authorized personnel as being authentic).

On the back of the **originals** is where you find where exactly this
marriage is recorded in Texas. It will say something like:
Filed the 9th day of April 1935
W.A. Tittle (actual signature)
Clerk County Court of Terry County
Recorded in Book 3, Page 208 of Marriage Records

This is a long way around to say: You bet I would put the citation in
stating who holds the original. I record the provenance of an original
marriage record just as I would the provenance of a family Bible. I
certainly will find a way (when I re-enter these via Source Writer) to
include where the certificate was recorded. Others will be able to find it
from that; but it needs to be noted that the original still exists and who
has it.

I haven't looked at this in Legacy 7, but I would think it would be
government records because it's issued under the authority of a state;
however, unless I can find a way to note both where the certificate is
recorded (e.g. County name, Marriage Book #, and page) plus who holds the
original, then I'll have to re-think it.

Just my long-winded thoughts on the subject,
Penny

- Original Message -

I am stuck on this question. I have in my possession three original
marriage
certificates which appear to be issued by individual states. They give the
name of the couple, date, and signature of a public official. I have never
requested "official" documentation from the government offices.

When I try to enter this as a Master Source, I am given options of Church
Records or Government Records. I was using Gov Records. However, in
reviewing EE, I wonder if they qualify as "Privately Held Materials" and
should be cited as Artifacts.

any thoughts on this?

Jim,
Simple enough and it does seem to work. Too bad they just couldn't
make them a bit smaller. I often run 3-4 programs at the same time -
each taking about 1/4 of the screen so I can see all at once.

Agreed, and if I could click a button and change it I would. Even more
so now that Zotero has hit the airways and only works with Mozilla. I'm
sure there's a use for integrating that with Legacy although I'm just

RE: [LegacyUG] V7: More events

Hi,

Just a thought about this. Why not simply re-word the
statement?

Instead of saying "You haven't looked at all of the
events yet. Would you still like to merge the people
anyway?",

you could day something like this

"You haven't looked at all of the events yet. Please
scroll down to view the rest of the events. Or, would
you prefer to merge the people anyway?"

Personally I prefer the Artifact format in _EE_ because I know the
provenance for my items but really don't know exactly where someone else
would get the government records. I could certainly search it out, but why
go to that trouble to leave a trail for *possibly* another researcher who
*might* want to get their own copy? I'd rather record what I have and move
on. If I describe the item thoroughly and accurately, that other someone
can either take my word for it or figure out where to order a copy. After
all, what I'm recording is what's on my original certificate. I don't know
what might be on file with the state or county unless I order a copy,
although it should theoretically be the same.

I agree with Steve. I have so many documents I would end up putting
"Privately Held" on everything if I looked at it that way. I think the
only thing I would consider to be "Privately Held" are things that I
have the original, and possibly only copy of. Movie stubs, napkins from
notable meals, that sort of thing.

after that they issue a certified "True Copy" or in Australia you can get an
"Extract of Entry" which is an abbreviated version of the "Original" record
held by the Government Office.

Again I think it comes down to how the individual likes to record the
Certificate in Legacy, a friend said as he has the "Original" death
certificate of his parents so he records it as "Privately Held Materials".
Myself I am recording the Certificate & it's details as "Gov Records" and
the state in which it is held so that down the track if my "original"
certificate is lost then who ever is looking at my Records will know which
State & Govt Office to apply for another copy if they want it.

Late in my use of Legacy 6 - I noticed the icons for pictures, notes,
etc were not showing up on the Individual's Information screen but I
just let it go. Installed Legacy 7 and the icons were back (and very
welcome). They were there last night. Today - GONE! The only icon
(after the surname box) is the temple and it is grayed out.

Ideas on getting my icons back - and why would they disappear??

The free solutions are often the best for home users. I strongly recommend
both of them... and I don't use Internet Exploder for anything... IE is
notorious for weaknesses and viruses with their Active-X scripting. Firefox

adaware that strips out all the annoying advertisements that pop up that IE
can't.

Yep, I had to do a complete reformat hard drive and
reinstall Windows and everything else after Norton 360

Have not had a bit of problem since doing that and

Darlene,

One last thought- what version of Norton are you using?
Norton is known to have caused some problems, it tended to
clog up both my computers which then ran slow- I have heard
that it has caused some other problems as well. I had to go
to the Norton's web site and get a "removal"
tool to actual remove all of Norton from the computers.
Its funny, why would they have to proved a removal tool if
it wasn't causing any problems. even if you turn it
off it may have embedded itself into your system causing
problems. I'm not a geek just know a lot of them, and
this was their suggestion for you- actually use the removal
tool to get rid of Norton's from your computer. See if
that allows the images to be viewed. If it does than
Norton was embedded in your system, then you will have to
purchase a different anti virus program. Some computers
are not experiencing any problems with Norton- some are,
like both of mine.

I don't know about your first query, but on the second: If you put
Legacy 6 at C:\Program Files\Legacy that's not the default location so

have a look where v6 actually is.

I am considering biting the bullet and just re-installing version 7

FWIW I thought to mention that my installation of Legacy 7 Deluxe
converted my previous Legacy 6 Deluxe data file with no apparent
problem. Because it warned me that the converted file would no
longer be readable by version 6 I took the precaution of first
copying all my Legacy data files to another folder labeled "Legacy 6
data files". (I had also made a full backup of my data partition to
a external drive before installing version 7 just in case of
problems )

One early thing I noticed on opening Version 7 was that even though
it converted my fdb file, it did not incorporate the options I had
modified in Legacy 6. Not a major problem and I just went through
them all to change them the way I liked them in version 6 including
the file locations, but it would have been nice if it had done that
as part of the "update". I did install version 7 in its own separate
folder (my careful nature) - in case that was the reason why version
7 did not find and adopt the previous options of version 6.
Installing version 7 in the same folder as the old version 6 might
have avoided this but then I would have had no way to go back and
compare.

As for addressing an envelope I do use the Mr. Miss and etc... however if I
don't know the name of a person in my research for instance John Smith had a

do I put Mr. Mrs in the pre-titles... there's no need for them and they can
complicate the search engines. We can see that there is a marriage fact and
put 2 and 2 together to come out with 4.

As we know, the Source Conversion tool is not yet done. I don't know when
it
will be. And I've learned that I'm not going to make any statements with
the

word "soon" in it. :) I just simply don't know. So...if we do have sources
that we want to convert to the SourceWriter format, we have to manually do
this for now. I'll present the "flow" of how I've been doing mine, which
is
not to say that it is the correct method for everyone. Keep in mind that
I,

too, am new to this and am open to others' ideas/feedback.

First of all, I personally am NOT going back through ALL of my sources to
convert them to the SourceWriter format. With tens of thousands of
citations, I would never get back to research if I solely concentrated on
this. Rather, when I'm adding new sources, I always use the SourceWriter.
And when I'm currently researching a family that has Basic Style
citations,

I work to convert those citations. A citation consists of both the master
source and the source detail. Here is my process for now

1) Open the Assigned Sources list for an individual by clicking on the
Sources icon. Here I can see which existing citations are Basic Style and
which are SourceWriter style. The SourceWriter style citations have a
small

black bullet at the beginning in the Source List Name column.

2) When I locate a Basic Style source in this list, I click on it so it is
highlighted. Then I copy/paste the entire Footnote/Endnote Citation from
the

Output tab into a Word Processor. I do the same for all of the text on the
Text/Comments tab. I also make note of the Repository and any Pictures.
With
this text pasted into my Word Processor, I have everything I need to
create

the new SourceWriter source.

3) Using the Source Clipboard, I create the SourceWriter version of this
source, entering all of the pieces into the correct fields, and pasting
the

text/comments/etc. from my word processor. If you're not comfortable with
the Source Clipboard, I strongly suggest that you become comfortable with
it. It will change your lifeThe Preview video of the Sources training
CD

at
http://www.legacyfamilytree.net/videos/previews/sources/sources_preview.html
teaches how to use the Source Clipboard.

4) Once the Source Clipboard is set up, using the clipboard's single blue
bar button, I locate and click on each Basic Style source in the Assigned
Sources list, and paste the source from the clipboard into the appropriate
event.

5) Each event will now have both the Basic Style source and the
SourceWriter

style source. Simply click on the Basic Style source, and click on the
Remove button. Do this until each Basic Style source is gone, and is
replaced with the SourceWriter version.

Repeat steps 4 and 5 for each person who shares the IDENTICAL Basic Style
source (master source and citation).

Maybe there's a better way? I haven't yet experimented with the Combine
button in the Master Source List, but from what a couple of you have
reported, this method doesn't yet do the job.

Thanks,

Geoff Rasmussen

"Extract of Entry" which is an abbreviated version of the "Original" record
held by the Government Office.

Again I think it comes down to how the individual likes to record the
Certificate in Legacy, a friend said as he has the "Original" death
certificate of his parents so he records it as "Privately Held Materials".
Myself I am recording the Certificate & it's details as "Gov Records" and
the state in which it is held so that down the track if my "original"
certificate is lost then who ever is looking at my Records will know which
State & Govt Office to apply for another copy if they want it.

Re: [LegacyUG] Source conversion

2008-06-18 Thread John Gregson

George.

O.K.; guess I understand that; but I did a lot of editing on this one
source, and also saved the results.
It would seem to me that if you use an original source, and in this
case all of my data was imported using GEDCOM, followed by two days of
'playing around' and saving the result, then I am using Source Writer.

I am a new user of Legacy and just starting to figure things out.
Is this what the Source Conversion tool is supposed to do?

SourceWriter.
And when I'm currently researching a family that has Basic Style
citations,
I work to convert those citations. A citation consists of both the
master
source and the source detail. Here is my process for now

1) Open the Assigned Sources list for an individual by clicking on
the
Sources icon. Here I can see which existing citations are Basic
Style and
which are SourceWriter style. The SourceWriter style citations have
a small
black bullet at the beginning in the Source List Name column.

Received the number via email late last night. I entered it using
the Unlock Deluxe feature...but receive no notifiacation that the
deluxe features have been unlocked. When I check it using the About
legacy menu item, it still shows that I am using the standard
version...and even has "Standard" entered in the customer id number
field. I have tried uninstalling, rebooting, and reinstalling and
even re downloading and installing from the fresh download to no avail. Help!

Re: [LegacyUG] Install does not use previous Options from 6?

2008-06-18 Thread Robert57P via Gmail
If you want to keep version 6 active, you can probably catch 80% of your
customization. Just have both version 6 and version 7 running at the same
time. In each, go to the OPTIONS, CUSTOMIZATION tab and just compare them
side by side. Then to go each screen in each program and compare them
side-by-side (for example, add missing columns to the INDEX and such).

Sounds like a hassle, but I did it without much problem and was pleased.
Plus it made me really look at the options and I found a few I had NOT
selected that I played with and adjusted.

I am considering biting the bullet and just re-installing version 7 over

behavior. The default installation procedure took me to a default

Installing version 7 in the same folder as the old version 6 might
have avoided this but then I would have had no way to go back and
compare.

[LegacyUG] run-time error '6': overflow

2008-06-18 Thread Gene Young

Has anyone else had this error message?

It occurred when I went to edit a source detail that had been entered in V.6. The Source text is
680 lines of text and I had about 2 lines of text in comments. When selecting edit detail a pop up
box appears with the above error message and upon closing the pop up the edit detail form opens with
the top half distorted and, upon closing that, the program shuts down.Deleting either the source
text OR the comments text eliminated the problem.

It behaves as if it has exceeded a maximum value, such as an object having an interger designation
rather than a long, causing an overflow access. I have deleted the comments and all is functioning,
however there appears to be an underlying problem which needs attention.

I think that this is a great idea.

  Jim Fitch
  [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Your experience below has given me what I think could be a good idea. You,
and others have not noticed that there were more fields to be filled in. In
our Merging feature, when comparing two individuals, if there are more
events than will fit on the screen, you can scroll to view them. If you
attempt to merge the two people without scrolling to see all of the events,
Legacy pops up a statement saying "You haven't looked at all of the events
yet. Would you still like to merge the people anyway?"

What do you think about this idea - if you click on the Save button in the
SourceWriter, but there are more fields that you haven't scrolled down to
see, Legacy could pop up a statement/question about the additional fields.
This may prevent us from not noticing the additional fields.

Thanks Dave! Man, I know it's getting pretty late bacause I just
totally missed the scroll bar on my detail screen! Now it works
perfectly!! It's really too bad the fields can't all fit on one page
because I'll bet you that more people than just me are going to
overlook this too. It might be worth it to try to reformat this a
  little in a future update.

Geoff, I apologize for taking up so much of your time on this because
I know you are very busy with other stuff right now. I think we will
all really appreciate the hard work you have put into this source
writer once we get used to using the input fields.

I still would love it if you could share with us some of the practices
you have used in converting your sources over. Do you update a single
census master source for a single county and then convert all the
detail associated with that new source, or do you work through all the
master sources first and then work through the myriad details attached
to them? This is just something that I'm sure would benefit many of
us. You could sort of bring us along on your learning curve.

Anyway, I can now go to sleep and dream about tomorrow's task ahead of
me in converting at least some of my census sources. The output looks
  good to me now!

And when I'm currently researching a family that has Basic Style
citations,
I work to convert those citations. A citation consists of both the
master

source and the source detail. Here is my process for now

1) Open the Assigned Sources list for an individual by clicking on
the
Sources icon. Here I can see which existing citations are Basic
Style and
which are SourceWriter style. The SourceWriter style citations have
a small

black bullet at the beginning in the Source List Name column.

Re: [LegacyUG] Mr & Mrs (was Standardization)

2008-06-18 Thread Tracy Skegg
hmmm, I use plain text, can't see why there would be gunk happening on
my emails, curiouser and curiouser.

Early Australian newspapers use text like "announcing the birth of a
new child to Mr and Mrs John Smith", this is why I've added an AKA for
Mrs John Smith for most of my pre-1960 married females. For my
convenience in cross checking my file.

One of the reasons I asked about deed poll information and the birth
certificate is also the sourcing issue - using the new source writer
format, my birth certificate is going to show two names. I'll now
have Mills pdf version of Evidence Explained, mayhap it'll give some
example I could follow, other wise, I'll have to improvise with things
that don't fit the norm. I remember someone awhile ago saying that
they listed all their events sentencing and sourcing information that
was different. I've been trying to follow that to help me keep track
of what I've done.

Just a quick note to Ron - when I finished the deed poll and it got
formalised. I had to surrender my birth certificate and apply for the
new one, looking back it seems funny. Pity I never thought back then
of my later love for genealogy, I never kept copies of the old birth
certificate. But my new one has the same registration, just a note at
the side stating the deed poll name change. I guess I'll add notes in
my family file to explain the differences.

Profuse apologies if I caused confusion. I confess I haven't actually
looked at the manual (which I have not got!) concerning the Source
Template Conversion Tool and was just assuming that it converted
old-style Sources to new. To me, any sort of "tool" would not involve
simply copying stuff from one field to another, therefore I used the
word "automatically."

Perhaps I have got hold of the wrong end of the stick and this much
talked of Tool does something entirely different.

Fwd: [LegacyUG] V7: Accessed date for lumped US Census Entries - for Geoff

2008-06-18 Thread BonnieAndJim69

It should be noted that a certain school of thought considers the GEDCOM to be
the worst thing ever to befall computerizsed genealogy!
In concept it was great but in implementation by the various companies

Gail and Janis,

I have done the same thing. I took a source that had lots of
different source details for several generations. I created a new
Master Source using the Source Writer. I combined the two. My
details stayed exactly where they were supposed to! I did not have to
re-enter any of the details. I was thrilled. Of course, I did a
backup before trying this, just in case I lost all those source
details that I spent DAYS entering.

As soon as they tweak the subsequent citation problem, this is going

Jeff,

Your conclusion at the end of your email is correct, had you installed in the
Legacy 6 folder all your settings would have been retained. The other option is
to copy all the .usr files from the Legacy 6 folder to the Legacy 7.

Geoff,

When you follow this procedure, do your reports generate the results
you want? Here is the problem I have had with the new Source Writer.
The Master Source Text prints on every citation, not just the first
time the source is cited. I have chosen the correct option in all the
appropriate places, but to no avail. The Source Detail does not print
at all in subsequent citations. I have submitted this as a bug
report. I thought the problem was related to the fact that I used the
Combine button, but I get the same problem with a brand new source
entered using the Source Writer. I also tried a new source going back
to the Basic Source screen and the results in the report were exactly
what I wanted, so I decided the problem must be in the new Source
Writer.

I do love the new templates. I'm waiting patiently for the kinks to
be ironed out.

[LegacyUG] Install does not use previous Options from 6?

2008-06-18 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
FWIW I thought to mention that my installation of Legacy 7 Deluxe converted
my previous Legacy 6 Deluxe data file with no apparent problem. Because it
warned me that the converted file would no longer be readable by version 6 I
took the precaution of first copying all my Legacy data files to another
folder labeled "Legacy 6 data files". (I had also made a full backup of my
data partition to a external drive before installing version 7 just in case
of problems )

One early thing I noticed on opening Version 7 was that even though it
converted my fdb file, it did not incorporate the options I had modified in
Legacy 6. Not a major problem and I just went through them all to change
them the way I liked them in version 6 including the file locations, but it
would have been nice if it had done that as part of the "update". I did
install version 7 in its own separate folder (my careful nature) - in case
that was the reason why version 7 did not find and adopt the previous
options of version 6. Installing version 7 in the same folder as the old
version 6 might have avoided this but then I would have had no way to go
back and compare.

[LegacyUG] Strange happenings on Individual Information Screen

2008-06-18 Thread GeoSci
Late in my use of Legacy 6 - I noticed the icons for pictures, notes,
etc were not showing up on the Individual's Information screen but I
just let it go. Installed Legacy 7 and the icons were back (and very
welcome). They were there last night. Today - GONE! The only icon
(after the surname box) is the temple and it is grayed out.

Ideas on getting my icons back - and why would they disappear??

Thanks
Keith

Subject: [LegacyUG] Source conversion

Thanks,

Just trying to anticipate problems in converting from version 6 to version

I agree. I just bought version 7 Deluxe. Hope the data moves into
it with no "problems".

Might be good to have a list of things to watch out for. Noticed
from the list that it might for instance be better to wait on
transferring the old sources to the new SourceWriter style because
the automatic conversion feature is not yet available. Knowing
potential problems ahead of time might save a lot of unnecessary
effort. :-) Jeff

[LegacyUG] V 7 Possible buglet - adding sources to Name Field

2008-06-18 Thread Judy
Has anyone else noticed that when adding a source to the "Name" field, the
actual name of the individual is missing in the bar at the top of the screen
and replaced only with the word "Name". This is not the case when adding a
source to an AKA Name field. I do like to refer up to the top of the screen
to note the person I am sourcing.

I also miss having the ability to add more than one source at a time!! I
batch source from census files frequently.

RE: [LegacyUG] Old Source Detail associated with newly Merged Master Sources

Gail,

I asked Dave about this last night and this was his response:

"Well, it makes a body think... I don't think we have even looked at the
combine master sources code on the master source list. If someone chooses
an old master source (with various detail citations using it) and then
combines it with a new SourceWriter master source, the citations would point
to the new master source but the old detail fields wouldn't be moved to the
new detail fields. I don't even know how we would do that. We wouldn't
know where to put the info. Looks like we need a conversion tool... So,
yes, right now the new detail fields would be blank... with no way to show
the old detail info."

I'll respond in my next email on how I'm converting my sources

Sources

I decided to start a new topic here for this question. I created a
new master source for a census. Then I merged an existing master
source used by 5 individuals into the new master source. The master
source looked good and the source detail does seem to have stayed
attached to the new master.

The problem is that, while I can see the beginning of the "old" detail
on the assigned sources screen, I cannot access it to update it. When
I click "Edit Detail," the new Source Detail template pops up with
empty fields. I need a way to get to my old data to show up somewhere
so that I can use it to update the new fields.

Am I missing something else obvious? Geoff, is this how you are
merging sources or are you creating all the new masters with out
merging the old ones in and then re-creating and attaching all the
detail separately?

Dave B. has confirmed that this is something he needs to take a look at.
Currently, what happens is that the first time the master source is used, it
will use the Footnote/Endnote variation. The second time the master source
is used, even if the detail is different this time, it will only use the
subsequent citation format. So, you're not missing something. Rather, Dave
is working on tweaking this so it works as would be expected.

Might be good to have a list of things to watch out for. Noticed from the

Some sites use computer generated places from close relatives when they are
left blank by the submitter, and the carats < > are put around by the computer.
As no reasoning is attached to such places, they are often very wrong. When I
see such places I try to delete them, as I recognize that a blank is probably

Re: [LegacyUG] Estimated Locations

2008-06-18 Thread MJMethod
I am a big proponent of such "estimates", for dates and locations.
The examples you give are good and I or others could provide innumerable
other examples.

I find them to be a HUGE value when looking at the screens or reports, when
sending or discussing families with people I may be interviewing, and
especially when doing searches. With the new mapping in V.7, it adds another
dimension.

They won't suit everyone, perhaps especially those who do a lot of website
work or publishing trees to online repositories.

For dates, using "abt", "circa", "est", "bef", "aft" or other qualifiers is
easily understood by the reader. Many sources, even well documented, can
frequently only get you close, e.g., from a census you may [probably] know
that
someone was born in a specific year but even that may be a calculation.

For Locaions: I am a big user of carats < > around anything I have
estimated. Legacy handles them well, although I understand that they may have
an
impact on some Gedcom usage and online repositories.

Especially when considering someone who lived in Massachusetts, but born before

I decided to start a new topic here for this question. I created a
new master source for a census. Then I merged an existing master
source used by 5 individuals into the new master source. The master
source looked good and the source detail does seem to have stayed
attached to the new master.

RE: [LegacyUG] Missing Multimedia Files

2008-06-18 Thread GIDavidson
Ron,

Thanks for the time and reply.

I used the same report, customize/options/locations/test multimedia paths.

The missing photos for people did give a RIN #, the missing photos for
source detail citation just reads: Source Detail Citation (5).jpg.
I was able to find and correct the missing people photos, however, can't
figure out and find the source photos.

No problem, there weren't that many and I just used the option to delete the
paths for the missing source photos to clean up the problem.

Event Picture: R.A.O.B.: William Arthur Ferguson [19] where the 19 refers to
the RIN. Your (63) looks more like a file name?

Tracy,

My daughter changed her maiden name by deed poll when she had her first child
so that all the family would have the same surname. I have entered this change
as an AKA.

There is no chance in England of the name being changed on the birth
certificate, as except under very, very special circumstances (not even
adoption) this is not allowed.

RE: [LegacyUG] Mr & Mrs (was Standardization)

2008-06-18 Thread music-line
Hi Tracy/ Jan, Jenny etc.

Thank you all for your brilliant responses.

It seems to me that everyone uses a slightly different system, each of which
is valid, non of which are perfect. I've no idea how to respond to some of
the scenarios, and because every case is different, it could be that your
exact scenario may not be duplicated elsewhere. I continue to read all the
posts with interest. It does seem to me that, for the occasional exception
it would be worth sticking to an overall plan and just customizing the
specific report.

By the way, I can't think how the gunk got attached to the bottom of Tracy's
response (I do always use plain text), please delete it from all other
responses - it was a completely different email in my inbox. Not only with
Plaxo will I never miss a birthday again, but it seems that half of the
L.U.G. might be sending Hilary Brewster a birthday card - apart from me, who
will probably be late as usual! To add fuel on the fire, I got Tracy's
email twice.

Best wishes

I have AKAs for my birth name, married name and I use my deed poll

Re: [LegacyUG] Mr & Mrs (was Standardization)

2008-06-18 Thread Tracy Skegg
Some of the emails here have discussed change of names. I've changed
my name through deed poll and now I use my husband's surname. I've
seen other family files where the surname is listed as "Jones Now
Smith" or "Jones/Smith". Others have used birth names and add AKAs
for all the names, as well as a note.

I have AKAs for my birth name, married name and I use my deed poll
name as my maiden name, and I have a deed poll event. Some of my
school records show my stepfather's surname, so I've also got an AKA
for that surname too. My little girl will know all my name variations
- but it could cause some confusion for others looking at my names and
trying to verify all the different names as attached to me. In my home
state my birth certificate has been amended to show both birth and
deed poll names. How do others show these changes?

Cheers
Tracy

I don't understand this as Legacy's website makes no mention of an A/NZ

options, which include Australian English.

See

I have a vague idea that somewhere along the installation process I had

wrong about that.

You are not correct in your last sentence!

If you wish to show your husband and children all with the surname
Brown, that's fine, and you'd do just as you have done. However, if you
wished to show your husband as Smith, because that was the name he was
born with, and use Brown as an AKA, yet still show your children as
Browns, you would simply change the "suggested" surname of Smith to
Brown when you entered your children's names.

For various reasons I have instances in my Family File where the
legitimate children of a married couple do not have exactly the same
surname as the main one for their father.

Re: [LegacyUG] Old Source Detail associated with newly Merged Master Sources

2008-06-18 Thread Jenny M Benson

Gail Nestor wrote
I decided to start a new topic here for this question. I created a new
master source for a census. Then I merged an existing master source
used by 5 individuals into the new master source. The master source
looked good and the source detail does seem to have stayed attached to
the new master.

This is how I do it. Let's say you have an old style Master Source
named Old Master and you create a new one with SourceWriter and call it
New Master. You merge Old Master into New Master.

You go to Joe Bloggs's Assigned Sources screen and select the line which
shows New Master. If necessary, resize the columns so you can see all
of the text in the Detail column. In the lower half of the screen,
select the Output tab and the radio button for Show Entire Source. You
can now see the old Source Detail and, in the lower section, any Source
Text and Source Detail you had with Old Source.

Now click on Cite a Master Source and select New Master again. Keep the
new Add the Source Detail window about 1/2 full screen size and by
moving it around as necessary you can see all the old text behind it
which you want to copy. You can't actually copy and paste, you will
have to read and re-type. When you are finished you will have two rows
showing New Master - the top one is the old version, which you now
delete, and the bottom one is the new, SourceWriter version.

That sounds a bit long-winded, but it isn't hard to do and doesn't take
long.

... And now that I've typed all that, Geoff will be along saying the
Source Conversion tool is ready!!

Colin, read further on the Gould website and you will find the following:

HOW DOES THIS DIFFER FROM LEGACY FAMILY TREE 7.0 DELUXE?
In short ... it doesn't ... this one just comes with extras. The program is
the same in both packages, and this comes with the manual in PDF form, as
opposed to a printed one available with Legacy Family Tree 7.0 Deluxe. The
Australia/New Zealand edition will come as a boxed product, and will include
the following as extras available in this version of Legacy only:

Australian Shipping 1788-1968 (CD) - A collection of over 240,000 arrivals
and departures of ships at Australian ports between 1788 and 1968
Australian Handbook 1904 (CD) - 1008 pages packed with all kinds of useful
and interesting information relating to Australia in 1904
New Zealand Post Office Directory 1900 (Wise) (CD) - A valuable resource of
names, addresses and occupations of those in New Zealand in 1900
Online Resources (CD) - A directory of some of the best genealogy sites in
Australia, New Zealand and around the world
WorldVitalRecords.com.au - 3 months access to the Australian, New Zealand,
and a selection of the UK collections included on this website
Online Learning Centre - Useful tips and resources to help you with all your
genealogy needs

I wouldn't have much use for those added products.

There is not yet available the provision for *automatically* converting
your old Sources to the new SourceWriter style, but I gather it is
referred to in the Manual and will be coming in due course.

You may, if you wish, manually convert your old Sources by creating a
new Master Source with SourceWriter and copying in the information you
had in your old Source.

I think there are still one or two bugs in SourceWriter being ironed out
so you might wish to leave your old Sources unconverted for the moment
and wait for the Source Conversion tool.

RE: [LegacyUG] Mr & Mrs (was Standardization)

2008-06-18 Thread Jan Roberts
Yes David, Legacy does allow you to record a different surname for anyone -
regardless of the father's surname. i.e If you have Legacy options set to
automatically fill in the surname based on the father's surname you can
always override that on an individual basis. And yes, I am always referred
to as Jan MAIDENNAME in reports. However, I structure my narrative reports
so that the sentences only use first or "quoted" names (for instance I am
really Janet, but always known as Jan - so Jan is the "quoted name),
interspersed with He/She so the reports read more naturally. If I want to I
can also use field names in my sentence structures specify the name /
combinations of names to be used. However, if I retained his birth name as
the primary name in Legacy I would get sentences that said things like John
George SMITH married Janet Kay MAIDENNAME / John and Jan had one daughter
etc. etc. - because the reports will only use the primary name (in a variety
of ways as specified by the field names) - and clearly Janet Kay MAIDENNAME
did not marry a John George SMITH. And if I recorded my daughter's surname
as BROWN it would muddy the report even further.

Cheers,
Jan

Hi Jan,

Thank you so much for that. That's another interesting one. I think I am
write in saying that John George SMITH can have a daughter named Mary BROWN
(i.e. Legacy will allow a change of Surname). Am I correct in saying that
in Legacy reports etc you will always be know and referred to as Jan
(..maiden name) in spite of being married to a SMITH /BROWN? Do let me know
if I am wrong here - I don't actually generate reports that often!
Therefore, personally, one could have your first husband as John George
SMITH and use Fred James BROWN as an A.K.A/alternate name. This is
personally what I would go for, just to keep my rule of 'standardization at
birth', but it is certainly another option.

Thank you for pointing that out.

I agree completely with your line of reasoning. With one exception - my
late first husband was born (say) John George SMITH, but by the time I met

BROWN when we married. Our daughter is Mary BROWN. So, although his

Hi Everyone,

All this talk about whether we put full stops or not after Mr, Mrs, Miss,
etc. had got me thinking about my own practice. When I came to think, I
realized that I do not actually record Mr, Mrs etc. at all in the
Individual's Information' view! Unless anyone can convince me otherwise, I
can't see the reason. In Legacy, we can see clearly the males & females and
if they are married or not.

All males are initially 'Master's' and at some point become Mister's'. If I
distinguish between the two, for living persons at some time I would need to
change all my 'Master's to Mister's'. That seems unnecessary work. If you
use the abbreviation 'Mr', am I right in thinking this stands for 'Master'
or 'Mister'? As all males (in anglicized speak) are 'Mr', why do we need to
specify for each record?

All females are Miss, until they are married at which point they 'usually'
become Mrs. In the Legacy family view. My wife and I happily sit on
opposite sides of the page, me with my surname, and Carol with her 'maiden'
surname. If I then insert Mrs, as her title, surely her name will read Mrs
Carol Southall, but when married her name changed to Mrs Carol Brookes.

[LegacyUG] Newby to Legacy

2008-06-18 Thread Pat and Rita Molloy
Thanks to all of you who replied to my query about folder structures.

You are a friendly lot.

You have given me something to think about particularly with regard to linking
computer records to paper records.

Just to comment on a couple of points that were made.

My principal reason for having all my genealogical information in one folder
was that I felt it would make backing up to a CD etc that much simpler.

With regard to re-entering all my information - I'm afraid that's me taking
stock. It's rather a case of "If only knew then, what I know now". I realise
now, that especially in the early years of my research, some of my record
keeping was a bit sloppy and it all needs tiding up.

RE: [LegacyUG] Standardization

2008-06-18 Thread ronald ferguson

Allen,

WRT Mr, Mrs, Miss we disagree and I have given some reasons elsewhere.
Regarding the use of "Master" I still use it on the envelope when writing to my
grandkids.

Probably a cultural difference. It just goes to show that one rule does not fit
all.

Re: [LegacyUG] Estimated Locations

2008-06-18 Thread JLB
I got alot of 'probablies' from some-one without any explanation, so it
just gets on my nerves. I figure if I'm going to use them I should also
leave myself some notes about why I'm saying what I'm saying. I don't
use them myself, although I s'pose I could. It would help to know where
to start looking when I want to get past 'probably'. But then if I was
at that point, and I knew that some-one born before 1620 and living in
Massachusetts was almost for sure (probably) born in England just
because I happened to be carrying around that kind of information in my
head, in between the grocery list and my sisters' birthdays, why would I
need to write it down? Except as notes to my inheritors, but geez, do I
have to do everything for them?

Re: [LegacyUG] Off topic, but need help, off of this list, concerning Ancestry.com!

2008-06-18 Thread Darlene & Don Hicks
Yes, that is what I had, on my Dell, also! If your computer is 8 yrs. old
and still running good, you are a very lucky person. My Dell is less then two
years old, and I just got through buying their protective package for a wopping
$270. Nothing they did helped me with ancestry.com. Oh well, now I have three
more call times, I can use before my year is up! They worked for over 10
hours, with me, but nothing solved the problem. Norton 360 is the problem, as
I already stated in another e-mail!
Thanks for your suggestions and willingness to help me solve the problem.
There are some mighty wonderful people on this list! :-D

Kind Regards,

Darlene

[LegacyUG] Estimated Locations

Hi Art,
I am going to keep the names of AVG free anti virus and Sunbelt Firewall for
next year! I will be very hesitant to renew my Norton 360. It has cost me a
month in research time, already. Thank you so much for setting me on the
correct path for next year! I appreciate it so very much! :-D

Re: [LegacyUG] Off topic, but need help, off of this list, concerning Ancestry.com!

2008-06-18 Thread Darlene & Don Hicks
Hi Chick & others,
My problem ended up being isssues with my Norton 360 2.0 2008. I have
already stated, to the list, what happened, and so you may read it on Legacy!
Thank you so much for responding to my cry out for help. I went through yours
and everyone else's suggestions and nothing worked until we dealt with Norton
360 2.0 2008. I am writing to the list, as I know others with Norton might be
experienceing the same problem I had! I am so sorry to the Legacy list, about
taking up so much reading time, but it should end, now, that the problem has
been resolved. I thank everyone for their patience! The pouring out of help
and support was amazing! What wonderful people are on this list! I usually
just post when I have a problem, as I am not a young woman, and need to do as
much research as possible, in the years I have left! :-D Thanks everyone!

Best Regards,

Darlene
