[LegacyUG] To-Do Problem

2008-07-03 Thread cabyers
Hi,

Have uncovered a problem that locks-up Legacy which was caused when I made
a error entering a To-Do item for an Individual's information screen.
Here's what I did:
1. Entered a To-Do item from the Individual's Information screen
2. Forgot to enter a anything in the Task Needing to be Done section, and
attempted to save the To-Do.
3. The program warned me of the error, and I then added Text to the Task
Needing to be Done Section, and saved it.
4. Then I noticed that the To-Do icon was colored, and indicated 0
items.
5. When I clicked on the icon, then Upper menus and Icons at the top of the
Legacy window when blank, and the program stopped functioning. The only way
I could shut in down was to reboot the computer.
6. I ran the Check/Repair but it didn't help.

[LegacyUG] Master Source Type

2008-07-03 Thread Chick Lewis
I am a recent convert from FTM to Legacy and trying to clean-up my sources.
I don't understand how or why to use the Source Type. If I have a
master source of Census 1900 New York and cite the county, page number
etc for details, they why do I need to enter census as the type? It
seems redundant. There are no entries for type in the Legacy sample
file, so apparently Legacy is not using it either.

What is the purpose of the Master Source Type List?

Elizabeth,

Over the years I have never managed to get the bold to stick or even work to my
satisfaction. However I seem to recollect a discussion from some years ago on a
very similar topic when it was found that either setting or unsetting 'stretch
fonts when resizing' can affect the boldness of the fonts.

Hope that this helps.

[LegacyUG] Source Filtering Question

2008-07-03 Thread Mike Fry
First of all, to Support, thanks for updating the web site and allowing
me to get a first look at the English and Welsh Source templates.

Secondly. How is the Filtering of the Source Template Index supposed to
work in conjunction with the search capabilities. I can readily see that
if the Filter checkbox is not selected, then F3 and and Shift-F3 can be
used to move down and back up the list of templates, matching the
entered search terms.

But, when from Step 1, I enter more than 1 keyword to search on (for
example England Birth) and then select the Filter checkbox, the list of
templates shown begins with Census records, which is *not* what I was
originally after. Indeed, your examples in the Help don't work quite as
indicated either.

Also, when the Filter checkbox is selected, the F3 and Shift-F3
navigation keys don't work at all.

Re: [LegacyUG] Mapping - helper application

2008-07-03 Thread Gene Young

David Baker wrote:

For anyone that is interested in getting their mapping side done as best as
possible, I wrote a small application have put it on my website at:

http://www.jodael.com/gedtokml.exe

To use it, all you need to do is Export a gedcom file in Legacy 7 format to
your computer, run my application pointed to the .GED file it will create
a .KML file. This kml file can be opened in Google Earth (just double-click
on the kml if you have Google Earth installed) and creates a red cross for
all the mapped locations in your gedcom. This makes it easy to spot places
where the geocoding has gone crazy - I've found places that should be in
Scotland ending up in the Sinai and places that should be in South
Australia ending up in Africa.

The app is free only tested on my own gedcom so far so may very well have
bugs. Also, first time I am using Visual Studio 2008 to compile an
application - it seems to run ok on the 4 computers I have here without
requiring an installation package but this may be because all the computers
I have here already have the correct .Net framework installed. Others may
not so let me know if it doesn't work you want to help me find out why.

I have downloaded and used this app on my Win XP laptop and it functions as stated. I might add
that once you open the file in Google Earth and save it there you can delete the original gedcom as
it is no longer needed. A consideration if HD space is tight. A nice App.

Sorry if some say that it is not on topic for the forum, but I think it is -
it's a helper app using the Legacy output to allow easier viewing of the
data. There is currently no way to get the data back from Google Earth to
Legacy if an error is found - that still needs to be done manually. I am
hoping that a future version of Legacy will have a feature like this built
in.

To get the correction into Legacy just cut and paste the correct co-ordinates.

Well worth the try and it does fit well with the Legacy locations functions.

Jane,

This may not be what you are looking for, but did you know that you
can create your own timelines? I don't have Legacy open at the moment
(not at my usual computer), so I can't remember the details, but it's
a fairly simple text file, with pipes (straight lines) between the
items, such as dates, Etc. Save it in C:\Legacy\Timelines\English,
and then you can use this timeline for chronology reports, Etc.

You can even submit you own timeline to Support who may include it in
a later build (as I did with the one for Ireland - Taoisigh and
Political Events - 1919 to Present).[Reminder to self, update
timeline with new details for 2007/08, and forward to support]

Look up creating timelines (or something similar) in help.

Of course, if you don't know the details of the state history for
those particular states, this doesn't help you at all ;)

I also have a set of encyclopedias, which I used the

Jane and Dermot,

A timeline can be created in the Timeline Screen (ViewTimelines) by clicking
New and adding the details. No need to worry about using the pipes or
anything else as it's automatic.

 Regards,

 Dermot.

The short answer is no.

What we actually need (and I think someone else mentioned it a long time
ago) is a Timeline Exchange that people can submit their self-crafted
timelines to for use by other people. The Legacy web site would be an
obvious place to store the timelines, but it would need someone to
categorise them and put together a webpage interface from which
timelines can be selected and downloaded.

RE: [LegacyUG] The new Invisible in Legacy 7

2008-07-03 Thread John B. Lisle

Martin,

This situation is where you use private marriage and private
child-parent relationship.

The relationship between your male family member (father) and the
mother should be marked as private. Mark his relationship with child
as private.

As the mother is visible to the family, she should not be marked as
invisible or private. How to set her relationship with the child is
based on the visibility of the child.

If the child is living with the mother and visible to the family,
then let the child's relation to mother not be private and child not
be invisible or private.

If the child is not visible - eg, was adopted out of the family, then
it is appropriate to make the child invisible and make the
relationship between the child and the mother private.

Does this make sense?

john.

[LegacyUG] Source Citation Report - Problem

2008-07-03 Thread Thomas Herson
This time I'm supplying specific information with regard to a problem I'm
having the the Source Citation Report. I have yet to have a response or an
acknowledgement from Support.

When citing Applications for Social Security Account Numbers (SS-5) I add a new
source and source detail as follows:

Selected for Master Source Template - Social Security Records Original

Entries in Master Source Template:

Master Source List Name - Social Security-Application for Account Number

Agency/Creator - Social Security Administration

Series - Applications for Account Numbers, Form SS-5

Source Detail Entries:

ID of Person: William Harold Peters

SSN: 061-20-0936

Date: January 4, 1931

Item: Application for Account Number (Form SS-5)

The resulting Footnote, Subseuent Citation and Bibliography output is just
fine. However, when running a Source Citation Report, NONE of the items in the
Source Detail Entries are displayed even though I have selected that option on
the include tab for the report/

Source Detail information IS displayed on all other sources that I have dealtt.
Is there something wrong with the Social Security RecordsOriginal Template?

Can anyone else duplicate my problem? Geoff Rasmussen said he couldn't, but I'm
not sure he understood the problem as I stated it to him

The reason I am interested in having the source detail show is that when I am
citing an SS-5 as a source for someone's name, such as the father or the mother
of the applicant. I like to be able to see on the Source Citation Report whose
SS-%I was citing. Without the Source Detail showing on the Source Citation
Report for this template, it's impossible to tell whose SS-5 is being cited.

Can anyone help?

Thanks,

I just tried to duplicate your problem. Did you not
put the parent's names in the text section? What field

the SS), I see a screen showing four places for text,

for it, I got all four text entries printing on the
report. What are we doing differently?

2008-07-03 Thread Don Cook
Tom,

I have duplicated your problem with an SS-5 from my own files. I have used the
citation, thru the clipboard on the individual and his mother.

As Richard points out, the details appear as they should on Family and
Individual reports (and I presume others).

However, as you have pointed out, they do not appear on the Source Citations
report generated from the Books/Other report tab.

Re: [LegacyUG] Source Citation Report - Problem

2008-07-03 Thread Marie Connelly
Tom,

I had a similar problem when I first downloaded Legacy 7 with details not
printing on reports. It resolved itself when I bought the deluxe version and
updated to 7.0.0.53.

Just tried to replicate your problem but couldn't. Did it with a little source
that's attached to only two people. Then I went to the Master List and tagged
the source. Then went to Source Citation Listing and with everything checked
both in the source citation report options and when I originally wrote the
source and source details I did a printout (only print tagged sources was
checked).

It printed the title Source Citation Report. Then underneath it printed the
source citation, then under that it says Used By: then the first name with
his details, then the next name and her details.

I had to talk to support about another matter and called their 800 number and
the customer service was excellent. If you still have the problem, maybe you
could try calling directly.

Why would it pring death when it was an application? Think you should maybe

[LegacyUG] Events without Sources

Thanks to those who replied.
I have followed the suggestion using a small focus group but I am getting
runtime error 9 whenever I try to preview the list I create. I have followed
the suggestions on the legacy website to no avail. Any other ideas welcome.

I haven't paid too much attention to the timelines in the past but with this
discussion I thought I'd take a look at the ones provided with Legacy 7. I
have lots of connections in Quebec and see that there is a timeline for
Quebec history but it's in French! Is anyone out there able to translate
all of the entries into English and send it to Millennia for inclusion in a
future release?

Jane and Dermot,

A timeline can be created in the Timeline Screen (ViewTimelines) by
clicking New and adding the details. No need to worry about using the
pipes or anything else as it's automatic.

Regards,

Dermot.

2008/7/3 Jane Sarles :

Are there timelines available other than the ones listed under Timelines
in the View menu? I am particularly interested in state history timelines
for Virginia, Kentucky, North Carolina, Tennessee.

I have duplicated your problem with an SS-5 from my own files. I have used

As Richard points out, the details appear as they should on Family and

However, as you have pointed out, they do not appear on the Source Citations

Tom,

I had a similar problem when I first downloaded Legacy 7 with details not
printing on reports. It resolved itself when I bought the deluxe version
and updated to 7.0.0.53.

Just tried to replicate your problem but couldn't. Did it with a little
source that's attached to only two people. Then I went to the Master List
and tagged the source. Then went to Source Citation Listing and with
everything checked both in the source citation report options and when I
originally wrote the source and source details I did a printout (only
print tagged sources was checked).

It printed the title Source Citation Report. Then underneath it printed
the source citation, then under that it says Used By: then the first
name with his details, then the next name and her details.

I had to talk to support about another matter and called their 800 number
and the customer service was excellent. If you still have the problem,
maybe you could try calling directly.

under the name it was used by was the word death.

Why would it pring death when it was an application? Think you should
maybe call support and find out if it's a bug.

RE: [LegacyUG] Timelines

2008-07-03 Thread M. Brenzel
I don't believe so. The description found at the bottom of the timeline
says Nouvelle-France (régime français 1608-1760)-Source:
http://pages.infinit.net/histoire/quebec-h.html;. It is one of five
timelines under Timelines for Language: Francais.

Interesting. I have Legacy 7 and can find no Quebec timeline! Even if I
switch from English to French.

Could it be a Timeline someone else created for you?

I haven't paid too much attention to the timelines in the past but
with this discussion I thought I'd take a look at the ones provided
with Legacy 7. I have lots of connections in Quebec and see that
there is a timeline for Quebec history but it's in French! Is anyone
out there able to translate all of the entries into English and send
it to Millennia for inclusion in a future release?

 Jane and Dermot,

A timeline can be created in the Timeline Screen (ViewTimelines) by
clicking New and adding the details. No need to worry about using
the pipes or anything else as it's automatic.
