Consider trying Evernote for notetaking.  I use it on laptop, Android phone,
Samsung Galaxy tablet desk computer--syncs on all of them.  Also includes
option to take photos--great with phones--and clip web images.  Works really
well.

I use Families on both an Android phone and an iPad 2. Both devices have their
benefits - as others have said, I always have my phone with me, and find the
display very readable. I would not attempt entering data with the phone's
keyboard, though!

I have used the iPad at the courthouse, archives, etc., but have not entered
data, as I would rather make photographs and enter information later.

Also, images that are attached to your Legacy file (birth/death certificates,
census images, etc.) will transfer to Families, and can be enlarged using the
pinch method. This is a great benefit to me, both while researching on site
and when sharing information with family members, at reunions, etc.

Great webinar yesterday. Even though I've been using Families for a while, I
learned some things that I didn't know.

I am sorry I cannot answer your original question. My son has a
IPhone and it does look to hard to do research on it. It looked like
a display only for Families.

I also have a Kindle Touch that stays beside me which works just
fine for viewing. I just like my netbook.

Maybe we need some more details on what is an add-on for Legacy?

This is from Legacy News (Apr 11th 2012):

Genealogy on the Go: the Families App for Legacy - free webinar now online

If you are considering going mobile with your genealogy, Legacy Family Tree
has the perfect solution. The Families App lets you take your Legacy data,
pictures, sources, To Do List and more with you on your iPhone, iPod Touch,
iPad, or Android phone or tablet (which also includes the Kindle Fire, Nook,
etc.). In today's webinar, presented by the Families developer, Malcolm Green
gave a demonstration of using the app and provided step-by-step instructions
for getting it all set up. He also showed how to synchronize your Legacy family
file with your mobile device.

Thanks for saying that, Ron.  This Asa Brown thread actually got started
because I noticed that Legacy is still using USA in its Asa Brown sample file,
that is shipped with Legacy, and not the new standard United States.  I should
have created a different thread when I mentioned the ALL CAPS, a different
issue.

I use ALL CAPS for the country only, such as CANADA, because it looks really
good that way and makes the country easy to spot.  I don't use ALL CAPS for
surnames because Legacy already allows me to display surnames in ALL CAPS.  I
am not suggesting Legacy make the countries an ALL CAPS display option because
not everyone uses the standard location for country.  However, if they could
make it an option only for those who wanted it, it would be excellent.  I hope
this explains it a bit better.  Thanks,  Jerry

More importantly, the all caps refers to shouting in communication(s) only.
It is utterly absurd to classify using capital letters in a genealogy program
as shouting.

Can you give me the RIN's or names that you are seeing in all caps.  I just
looked and my sample (the one I install) doesn't have all caps.   For any of
the names or any of the locations.  Anyway, let me know what you are seeing.

If you want the newest sample just delete your sample file and re-install from

In my opinion there should be NOTHING in all caps. Some surnames have embedded
caps and some do not, but they are spelt the same way, except for the caps.
As for states and countries, no way either. We do not need to be shouting in
our data.

Paul, don’t know where you’re located. I paid $600 for about 6 of the large

I talked to Flip-Pal yesterday to see if I could use an Ultra SDHC 8GB card
that was on sale.  The answer was yes.  She said I probably wouldn't notice any
difference.  Off. Depot said the computer limits the speed, and maybe speed is
not an issue with a scanner, but having 8 instead of 2GB sounds good, and just
maybe I can use it in a camera too.

We have great news-international shipping of the Flip-Pal mobile scanner is
now available to our customers who live in Australia, New Zealand and
European Union countries!
You can now go to the flip-pal.com website, order the Flip-Pal mobile
scanner and accessories, receive real time price quotes in your local
currency and have the option to include duties and taxes at a guaranteed
rate. This is the best way to get a Flip-Pal mobile scanner until a proper
reseller is found and contracted.

[LegacyUG] Help files

2012-01-07 Thread BF
Why is Help so unhelpful!  I'm always frustrated by trying to find  a n y t h i

I just spent 15 mins looking for 'no children.'  A report said 'one daughter,
no given name' because I had entered 'none' in red - the couple had no
children. I searched for 'no children' needlessly.   (And another 15-30 mins to
try to find how to show 'unknown gender.')

To illustrate my point, here's what I got when I searched - For ‘gender unknown’

occurrences of the two words 'gender' and 'unknown'.

Are you looking in the Index or Search tab?  Single words are best.

I'm not sure why you were looking for no children - what
specifically were you hoping to find out?

Using the Index tab for Gender, I was taken to the topic on the
Information Screen and it says

Gender
Select the appropriate radio button.  If you don't know the gender of
the individual, select ? for unknown.  (When you are editing an
existing individual, these buttons may be grayed out if the person is
already part of a marriage.)

So yes, this topic *does* have something to do with your search
because that's where you enter the gender of the individual. Don't
discount a topic title because what you're looking for *is* discussed
in those topics that come up

Also - the Index shows   Unknown Gender - which again takes you to the
Information Screen topic

Gender in the Search tab listed a lot more topics because it's an
everyword search and may or may not apply as well as the topics in the
Index tab.

I also looked up  gender unknown in the search tab and the same
topic was in the list of suggestions.

When you're in a window in Legacy and aren't sure what to do, just
click on the Help button in that window and you'll be taken to the
appropriate topic.

Sherry

You are being too specific in your search.  I just tried to search for
no children by searching just children.  In the list that was presented
I scanned down to where I saw Marriage Information.  I thought that it
would be logical to find children information in a section on Marriage
Information so I clicked on that.  Right in the middle of the page,
clear as day was;

Had No Children

If you have confirmed that this couple had no children, you can check
the This Couple Had No Children box to indicate this.  When this box is
checked, the Child List on the Family View will show Had No Children.

Start with a less specific search and refine it as you go.  This applies
to all search engines.

Re: [LegacyUG] Help files

2012-01-07 Thread BF
Jennie, I've been doing genealogy for 20+ yrs and basically
only used FTM; don't like their association with ancestry.com.  Legacy
sounded good, and the good things I like, but as someone said 'I would rather
be doing genealogy than learning how to program Legacy.'  I will be bored silly
going through 'just the 6th' video most of which I know or
I'm not interested in and won't rem anyway; I would need to go through them
again NEXT TIME I have a question. Don't suppose those videos have an index of
their content?  Will they tell me the purpose of RINs and MRINs and if I
must use them. I think I saw somewhere that the answer is yes.  Why reports
print with 'born on Jan 3,
1873' died on Sep 8, 1828...? When you're reading a long report the ONs
really pop. Doubt if there is a way to delete them unless it’s done
manually, if that’s possible.

I would like to find what I want to know when I want to
know about it - like an online index - one might expect to find in Help.
It seems that there are 'correct words' when you're searching for something, and
I think it was you who told me - about another problem that may have been
'married someone Jane Doe' thing in a report -  that things had to be
entered in a certain order! That was a shocker, is it in videos?

Too bad there isn't a standard Legacy edition that's
complete and ready to use for those of us who just want to enter our family
files with the good features, and then leave the in-the-works edition that can
be tweaked to suit your multitude of interests for the
nitty-gritty-look-under-every-leaf folks who are into that.

This UG seems to be the only place to get answers, but
frequently they come with the ‘you should have known that’ attitude.  When I
google, I only get Legacy sites.  When I search the archives I get a collection
of unrelated to the subject entries.  They
seem to be sorted by subject not by content, so what I’m looking for may be in
some unrelated subject that doesn't pull up.

Seems there just isn’t a good place to find a quick
answer?  We need a Legacy for Dummies
book – online.  Those books don’t usually
assume you already know answers to everything leading up to your question, AND
they have an index.

I'm thinking when I finish this, nearly done 2,000 people
project, I will need to copy the report into Word and edit it.  If that's
possible.  I have to print a report for the man who doesn't use a computer,
otherwise some of these 'problems' I have might not exist.

Frustrated?  Yes.

As some of the things you are looking for are really rather basic you
might find it helpful to take a step back and do some general learning
to broaden your knowledge of the program.

This may seem time-consuming when you are wanting to get on with
entering your family members and sharing Reports, but it really will
save you time - and frustration! - in the long run.

For example, if you worked through the Tutorials (see the Content menu
under Help) you would have learned all about the Marriage Information
screen, including indicating that a couple had no children, in just the
6th exercise.

There are also a good selection of tutorial Videos available.  You have
to purchase these to get the full benefit, but even just the previews
can teach you a lot.

Gene,

I think that you are, perhaps, being a little
unfair, surely a pen rather than a pencil !

Seriously though, I think that we should realise
that for a newcomer to the program, Legacy does have a pretty steep learning
curve – and with all the new stuff it’s getting steeper. Even 10 years or so
ago, when I first used the program, I did, like Jenny, spend quite some time
messing around, and right and left clicking just about everything I thought
clickable. When I had some idea as to how it worked then I stopped using the
Sample files, and started to put my own stuff in.

It is not unreasonable to expect someone to have
looked at the Help Files before asking a question on the List, but like for the
OP of this thread, sometimes the required answer does not pop up, or if it does
it is not clear. Or it may be that what one wishes to do cannot be done, but
without asking the question one will never know.

I admit to being one of those who is more likely
than not to give a brief answer, maybe just showing the path to finding a
facility that is needed, in the belief that a person best learns by following
the process through rather than being spoon fed and remembering nothing. It
certainly is not because I wish to give the impression “that you should have
known this”. It is always open to the poster to come back for details, and,
indeed, I deal with many follow-ups off-list.

answers to that! One is that Legacy *does* offer a Standardedition and
a DeLuxe edition with lots more "bells whistles" for thosethat want

isprecisely what attracts so many people to it. Those that want a

‘you should have known that’ attitude.I'm sorry you feel that
because I'm sure it is not what any of useintend to put across. Those
of us who spend a lot of time here offeringhelp and advise to other users
wouldn't be doing it we thought that! However, I do think that people should
"help themselves" to a certainextent, if only because someone nearly always
learns more that way. Itcan also be a bit annoying when a request for
help comes across as "Ican't be bothered to work out how to do this, so will
someone who hasmade the effort tell me what to do" - although I expect that

[LegacyUG] How to search middle name in index?

2012-01-02 Thread BF
Is there a way to search for a middle name in the index?  Some folks go by
their middle name and when I don't rem their 'unused' first name I have to
search through the surname.  Just a nuisance with the relatively small tree I'm
working on now, but will be a bigger problem when I start working on my

Thanks Jenny, but in your example I can't search Mary in the index and get Jane
Mary...  I tried a * wildcard, which did nothing.  Just got an idea and
searched      then   '   and got only the first instance,   , and it won't go
to the next,  so that didn't work either.

Ex: (Same as your Jane Mary) - Henry Roy was known only as Roy; Dora Oral was

the index so I can see their family.

If a person is known by any name which is not the first given name, you
should enter their full Forename as follows:

Jane Mary Mary or Henry Hal.

In Reports you can choose to Use Quoted Name for Narratives and Remove
Quoted Given Names so you report might read Jane Mary Doe was born
Mary married ...

You can search for these people by using the Detailed Search and
selecting Given Names / Contains / Mary or Given Names / Contains / Hal.

If you search in the way I detailed you will get a list in the Name List

[LegacyUG] Way to print the entire file?

2011-12-02 Thread BF
For the family of the man who doesn’t use a computer, I
would like to print an index that would include every individual in the tree
(about 1600). Is there a report that would include all with their info?

For desc. of John Sylvia to ‘Leland,’ (about 100 pgs in
Narrative, the main and largest section) I see the index, but desc of children
of John not in Leland’s direct line would not be included.

If I print Leland’s ancestors in Narrative, then break the
rest up into narratives of John’s ‘descendants  of child 1, child 2, etc, will
that catch
everyone? (John had 14 chldn but for some there is little info.)  Then they
would all be indexed but –
separately, within their group.

Else, is there a way to print the entire index (not the best
- that would just be alphabetized names with no reference to pages where they
might be found); maybe include dates, spouses.

Any ideas for the best way to get a hard copy for him to see the
scope?  Thanks.

Best way I can thinks of is to use the Descendant Tab
First go to the oldest ancestor
select Descendant Tab
Click on tab header - say birth date , then add, if missing, columns for
christening and death date
Choose print then preview to see what it looks like before printing.
Note: Adding too much detail causes this to wrap test to the next line making
it less readable.
You may want to think about Landscape printing to get more information per line.

Yes, they're in the list.  Spelling it is!  Even here... correct spelling is
Schoeck.  Thanks for pointing out the obvious, Jenny.

If I go to Index and type Shoeck, there is nothing.  I have to remember
a wife then after I can see the name in a family file, THEN go to Index,
 they're there.

If you click in the Surname box to sort the list by surname, then scan
down the list do you see the Shoecks?

The only reason I can think of for them not showing up when you type the
name to search for is if you are accidentally typing it with a different
spelling to what you have used in your family file.

Cheryl,
Open the Tag Records screen Ctrl-t and you can file in the Description boxes
with whatever you are using each tag for. That way when you mouse over the
tag number on any screen that has the little tag boxes, the description will
show as a reminder to you.

Wendy and Ron - I have no idea what tags are for which is why I was

of spending more time on the software than genealogy so I haven't done
that. I'm spending my time working on the actual data. That would be

Re: [LegacyUG] Not Responding and Backups DNLD

2011-10-26 Thread BF
I think I do need to dnld Legacy again and lose whatever I've done recently.
I've been getting people who I know are linked showing w/o the link.  And
having to back into a family from a name I remember if they don't show a link -
Ex: yesterday Margaret Workman was shown w/o parents.  I remembered that she
was a sister to Calvin W. so I opened him from the index, made his parents the
current family and there she was.  So when I clicked on her name the parents
were there.  She is only in the index once.  That has happened a few times with
different people.

Someone mentioned not entering people in the correct order can cause a problem
- I think they said entering a child before a husb was a problem?? I just enter
people as I find them.  But as for Margaret above, she is from, I believe, a
third generation so she has been in the file quite a while, not recently
entered.

How do I dnld Legacy again? I looked a while back and it told me I had the
latest version.

Betty,

Sorry I've not been around today, really busy. Mike, it is thought that this
happened due a power failure, and all the evidence points to a corrupt
database.

Betty, I would now follow the path which Dennis suggested, if that doesn't
work then uninstall/reinstall Legacy and use FileRestore Family File to
open your backup (the last before the power failure) but please do remember
to give it an unused file name when asked.

If that doesn't work I think that we will have run out of options for you to
try, and I would ask Legacy support to see if they can sort it out for you.

Fw: [LegacyUG] Not Responding and Backups DNLD

2011-10-26 Thread BF
Well, Ron, I got 'this program uninstalled correctly' then clicking that I got
'this program might not have uninstalled correctly.'  The Help said to click
uninstalled correctly, which I did, again.  The icon is still in the tray - I
opened it  There is my file, checked the ver - same one, so I would say it DID
NOT uninstall.  I tried again and got 'could not open install log file.'

When the time comes - I was wondering if to locate recent changes lost I could
go to the View Tree thing on a recent save to check used RIN #s, compared with
the old file that would not have those numbers.  Of course that would only be
new people, not changes made.

Hi Betty,

All my not be lost with your latest work. I have not mentioned it before
because the priority must be to get your database in order first, but
Dropbox retains a history of your changes. The latest before the power
failure may be the corrupted version, or may not, but once your DB is sorted
it is something which can be considered.

Firstly, uninstall Legacy, then go to the Legacy Website and download from
there, it is not the Update which you need but the full version. I would
advise making a note of the Delux number (you will find it in the General
Information Icon - customer number) before you uninstall.

Hi Ron,

Thanks for reposting in plain text.

Speaking to Betty's very last problem...

AFAIK, tblXI (deleted individuals) and tblXM (deleted marriages) get
populated when the user chooses to Reuse abandoned RINs on the Options
Customize Data Defaults screen (in V6). If either of these tables
gets corrupted, you can try unchecking the Reuse abandoned RINs (close
and restart Legacy for good measure). Then go back and check Reuse
abandoned RINs. This should cause Legacy to rebuild those tables.

If that doesn't work, then I would contact support and get one-on-one
help.

Betty,

Sounds like you have them in the Locations, as Mike suggested, you will find
the Master List at ViewMaster ListsLocations. Find the one which contains
“Topeka”and highlight it, click the ‘Combine With’ button, then find the record
with “Toldeo” in it, again highlight the record and click ‘Combine With’. All
changed Job done'. However if you have Topeka correctly in some locations, you
will have to change each record individually. Using Search SearchReplace and
opting to confirm each one is probably the best way of doing this.

Thanks Ron Mike.  Master Loc List is probably something I don't know about.
I just have them listed on the individual page - 'died 3 Mar 1872, then under
buried - Hillside Cemetery, Toldeo, Chase, KS'.

[LegacyUG] Not Responding and Backups

2011-10-24 Thread BF
1. The electricity went off yesterday while I was working.  I opened Legacy
again and didn't notice any oddities. Most of today I’ve been comparing 20 pgs
of names submitted to me.  At one point it hung on marriages – after clicking
on the marriage icon I got a blank marriage screen and couldn’t get out a
conventional way, so I used task manager to stop the program, which it said was
Not Responding.   When I opened it again I had the same man and woman listed as
second marriages for each – just same names listed twice, and another person as
wife of my ‘main’ subject; I was able to unlink him.  The 2 marriages weren’t
in the index as 2 people.  Deleted and reentered.

2. I’ve had ‘Legacy Not Responding’ – just a couple of times since I’ve had
it. Do I do something to cause that? Like start typing or enter before it has
digested the last move??

3. With all of that as a preface, I just found 2nd marriage info in my
comparison that I thought I had entered months ago and the ‘wife’ is only
connected to her parents now and they have no ancestors, I would not
have entered them 'loose' – is it possible to ‘look at’ or ‘Compare’ a backup,
or open it under another name?  I suppose if I Restore it will overwrite my
current files and delete anything I did the past 2-3 days, which may not have
been a lot I spent a lot of time on findagrave and ancestry; but I don't know
what would be lost.  I wasn’t sure I should backup after the electricity
stopped in case entries were damaged.  If I could just look at an older one
maybe there were children, siblings, and more links connected with that
marriage??  (If so, where do I even find physical backups {not under File}? I
use the default with current date.)

Betty,

There is no harm in asking it to try and correct again, I usually repeat
until there are no error messages.

However, I have never had this message and it seems likely that the power
failure has damaged your database, in which case you may have to send it to
Legacy. Have you tried running your backup?

You may notice that I have changed you post to plain text because I would
like a second opinion from Dennis Kowallek, who will not have seen your post
because he does not accept posts in HTML (and rightly in my opinion!). He
may also be able to come up with an alternative scenario. So please adjust
your email client settings so that any reply is in plain text.

Hope you see this, Dennis, what do you think?

If that doesn't work, then I would contact support and get one-on-one
help.

A problem like this cropped up a few years ago and may be the same as what
you’re seeing.  My recollection is that it was caused by entering data in a
certain sequence.  In my case I believe I had entered a wife’s details and a
marriage date before entering the husband’s name.  Legacy automatically adds
“someone” (which is invisible) and when the second spouse’s name is entered it
doesn’t overwrite that but just adds it as “Mary married someone John Smith” or
the reverse.  I had to delete the couple and then re-enter both husband and
wife before adding the marriage date in order to clear the “someone.”

It’s been quite a while since this happened so my memory is fuzzy, but there
was a long thread about it before the cause was discovered.

That's the feeling that I'm getting - that there flaws that go unresolved.  The
new book sounds good but I expect a lot of things that I'm not interested in

[LegacyUG] Wording in reports

2011-10-18 Thread BF
I had a strange thing happen a couple times.  One example is in a descendant's
report, farther down than the beginning, I read
'William M Workman married someone Margaret Gargus.'  Say what?  Where did
'someone' come from, especially with a name there!

7.5.0.112    I'll check tomorrow.  Thanks.

Betty,

Check your marriage wording settings at OptionsCustomiseViewEdit Default
Marriage Wording (button top right). Also Check the Individual Marriage
Screen for the couple you will find the settings under the Wording Options
Tab.

BTW What Legacy version are you using, as I thought this problem had been
eradicated – certainly not seen it crop up for ages?

Re: [LegacyUG] How to Clear the Clipboard

2011-10-15 Thread BF
Thanks Leo, I don't put the Word files in Pics but in that same group is File -
(Pic, Sound, Video, File).  In Legacy Pics - the only files there are samples.
I have added nearly a dz pics - wonder where they are?? Unless there's another
sub heading under one of the other titles.

Do any of you use 'Files' to link documents?  That's fairly new, isn't it?
Maybe there's a quirk.  Maybe I should try tech support?

Tried to install the docx again this a.m. - same result.  The old file was
Workman, Fred Margaret hdstn - the only place I see that (now deleted) is in
Wordpad under recently used files.  The new one is Fred Margaret Workman
hdstn and also a copy same name with a '2' appended.  I renamed a copy Sam
Jones - got the same unedited file.  That file is 'stuck' somewhere in Legacy!

I will be gone most of the day. Later I will try downloading that file again
from the source.

Hi Betty,

When you click on the picture icon and it opens up select edit, at the bottom
of the next screen under the buttons Crop and Trim it will display where
this file is located. Example: C:\Legacy\Pictures\hdstn folder\Fred and Margret
Workman hdstn.docx

If this is where the corrected file is this is fine, if not than you may have
to redirect Legacy to the correct file. But before you attempt this make sure
that there is only one file in this folder with the same file name.

Close your Legacy program.

Go to your Start Button on your computerclick My Computer click your C:
(drive) click Legacy click Pictures click hdstn folder (or follow the path
that appeared for the file). Now scroll through your documents to find the file
Fred and Margret Workman hdstn.docx. If there is only one by this name double
click on it to check the wording, if it does not contain the newly edited
version than the changes that you thought you had made did not take effect and
may have to be edited again.

If there are two files with the same file name than check the second file to
see if it contains the newly edited information. In this case just delete the
incorrect file and keep the correct file.

If the above does not work than you can try and locate the original file before
you changed the file name, open it up to see if it contains the the newly
edited version.

Assuming that you still have the original file with the newly edited
information and the file with the correct name but the incorrect information
than you will have to alter both. Provided that you do not have the orginal
file attached to other events.

If this is the case than make the following changes:
1) in your Fred and Margret Workman hdstn.docx rename it Frederick and Margret
Workman hdstn.docx
2) go to the original file with the correctly edited information and rename
it Fred and Margret Workman hdstn.docx

Now open your Legacy program and check to see if the correctly edited file
opens up.

If this works than you can go back in and delete the file renamed Frederick and
Margret Workman hdstn.docx,

I hope this is not too confusing and it helps.

Leo

Re Tools, Customize Launch – not there in Legacy or Admin Tools for Windows.
Is there another step between the two?

I’ve use this same procedure to link a census page and a typed obit, no problem
– difference is that I didn’t make any changes to them.  Also closed Legacy and
reopened to see if that made a diff.

Procedure to link ‘File’:

Click Pictures icon
Click File (hdstn folder opens in Word, the last place I used)
Click ‘Fred and Margret Workman hdstn.docx’
Click ‘Open’ in Word (to attach)
Legacy Description pg opens
Type ‘Headstone’ caption
Hit OK – icon labeled Headstone is in the Pic Gallery
Dbl click - didn’t close the .docx file, get ‘the hdstn file is in use, etc…’
uses the new and correct file name.  Closed it
Dbl click again – got the old, unedited file that has been deleted.

Legacy has the facility to override the Windows defaults so the OP

Re: [LegacyUG] How to Clear the Clipboard THE END temporarily

2011-10-15 Thread BF
Ladies and Gentlemen, I appreciate your help, but I need to do some genealogy
instead of playing with Legacy.  I started using Legacy for a man who is 87 in
KS and said his family was all on notes and pcs of paper and that he is running
out of time.  So I agreed to type it for him... thinking that I would learn
Legacy on his family then bring over my 10K plus files...I thought I was just
doing his family, but we now have more than 1,000 and I want to wrap it up so I
can work on my families.  I see that Files can't be printed in reports and he
doesn't use a computer so this 'project' would not help him.

Thanks again, I'll keep watching your helpful hints and  'I'll be back...'

[LegacyUG] How to Clear the Clipboard

2011-10-14 Thread BF
I'm a relatively new Legacy user: I entered a Word 'file' of a headstone.  It
was too big and needed cropping, which I did.  Also changed the name. But every
time I attempt to add the new file it loads the old file, even tho I'm clicking
on the new file name! I deleted the old file.  I tried adding a wrong file to
see if that changed the clipboard - nope. How to clear the clipboard? I want to
add several hdstns from Word as 'files' so would like to find the answer before
the problem arises again.  Also it opens in Wordpad, can I change it open in
Word?

At one point it asked me something like 'insert from Windows clipboard?'  I
said yes - after I copied it, got the same old file result. Could not get that
option to try again, and again...  Just spend a lot of time in Archives, but
with a lot of the info being from 07, wonder if a lot of those QAs might have
been addressed in the software by now.  (Didn't find this particular question.)

Re: [LegacyUG] How to Clear the Clipboard

Thanks Bob, under Pictures, I'm trying to link a Word file in 'Files.'  I save
a lot of things in Word because it's faster/easier/some editing, than finding a
place to save jpg.  Yes, I use Win7/Office 2010, haven't had a problem with
other software; would Legacy change the file extension?  Guess I have to go
back through the Word hdstns and change them all to jpg!

It's the Legacy clipboard that I believe is the problem.  I can copy the 'new'
hdstn in Word and save it to another location.  Legacy is keeping the unedited
file and uses it every time I try to link the new one.

Not quite sure what you are doing! Why would you try to save a Word doc? Why
wouldn't you keep it a JPG and link the JPG?

I am assuming you actually have Word on your computer. If not, the file will
open in the next-best thing, Wordpad. If you do have Word, then your file
associations got a little mixed up and you would have to change that in Windows.

Some versions of Windows Clipboard will allow you to save up to 24 [I think]
different things in the clipboard, but when you paste it will ask you which of
the 24 you want to paste?

Re: [LegacyUG] How to Clear the Clipboard

Ron, I just assume that it's a clipboard that is saving that old file that has
been deleted.  I don't know where to find a Note Field.  Saving in Legacy Pic
Gallery, Field (in the Pic, Sound, Video, Field area).

Betty,

Like Bob, I was unsure of what you are doing, and to be honest, I am still
puzzled. I cannot for the life of me see how the Legacy Clipboard gets into
the act. I don't use WORD, but do put many files of different formats in the
file section of the gallery - actually only for Sources.

To do this all I do is click the File Icon, browse to the file, select it
and click open. To satisfy myself I just put an OpenOffice .odt file in
(their equivalent to .doc) and had no problem.

It has just occurred to me that with your mention of clipboards, you are
trying to put it in a Note Field. You cannot do this, it must be a text file
for this.

Re: [LegacyUG] How to Clear the Clipboard

2011-10-14 Thread BF
Options Customize Launch says - default for Word Processor and is blank.
Sounds correct.
No, I select the correct file in Word and the wrong one appears in legacy -
doesn't it sound like that old first file is in a clipboard?  It says when I
del it in Legacy that it will still be available for other programs.  THAT is
what I want to get rid of.  But I don't know why it isn't replaced with the new
file?? Bedtime here too, Ron - for me.  More tomorrow.
Betty,

It is OptionsCustomiseLaunch, make sure that it has the path and file for
your WORD exe program.

Your procedure is absolutely correct, but I would correct one thing. You say
that the ‘old unedited file’ is being shown – do mean it is opening in WORD?
You previously said that you had deleted this file, which I took to mean that
you had deleted it from your PC. If it is still coming up you clearly haven’t,
and it is still in the same location on your PC. So did you mean that you had
just removed it from Legacy?

I am going to suggest that you run FileFile MaintenanceCheck/Repair. I am not
too optimistic about this, but it is worth trying. If it doesn’t work please
come back to us, as in the meantime I will have a look to see if there is a usr
file which you can delete!

Thanks Jenny and Bob,
 They’re .docx

Legacy wouldn't change the extension. Are they .doc or .docx? I don't
even know if Wordpad will open a docx. If it is a .doc and you double
click the file and it opens in Wordpad, then your file associations
need fixing so that a .doc opens up in Word instead.

Legacy has the facility to override the Windows defaults so the OP
should go to ToolsCustomiseLaunch and see if Wordpad is selected as
the default wordprocessor for Legacy and if so, change it to Word.
