I need some help with a problem I have.

Contact me off line at treclimber1...@gmail.com with the* subject* "*ACCESS*

Re: [LegacyUG] Limit individuals being included

2021-05-05 Thread Gary Crull
Finally got around to trying these suggestions submitted. Thanks to those
who replied.

What I want is to preclude, for privacy concerns, *ANY* reference to
people, especially my grandchildren, great grandchildren in my immediate
family born after 1970. In general these suggestions take care of my
concerns. On the Family and Descendant reports the individuals don't show.
As is on the FAMILY report, they all show.

Anyone born *after 1970 *would state the SEX and "living". Any born *before
1970* would have regular information of dates, spouses, etc.

HOWEVER, I've found the individuals mentioned in some of the lesser used
reports., i.e. Descendants, Descendants Narrative.

Is there a way to address this situation where they are shown as "living"
on ANY report?

I hope this more accurately reflects my goal.

Gary

[LegacyUG] Limit individuals being included

2021-04-15 Thread Gary Crull
I know there's a way to do it, just can't find out how!

I don't want to have any information included on individual(s) born after a
given date. I did a search and found the number that fit that category.

How do I indicate the individual exists but preclude personal information
(i.e. descendants etc) being shown on any reports and in a GEDCOM file?

Thanks

[LegacyUG] Donating Legacy research to library

2021-03-19 Thread Gary Crull
Hello all!

I'm in the process of making a donation of my 40+ year research to a major
regional library. I've already rounded up the supporting folders/files
collected over the years. I have Legacy research on my own line; maternal
and paternal lines, inlaws, etc. These are all separate databases. I need
to know how to prepare the actual Legacy database. I know making a GEDCOM
is necessary. What else needs to be included?

LEGACY is contained in a folder named GENEALOGY - Legacy Families. within
that folder are sub-folders *1*) DATA; *2)* iDrive;* 3)* Intel; *4) *Legacy
FS *; 5)* LegacyCharting; *6)* Media. By including the entire folder and
sub-folders and the GEDCOMs for each database would the receiving
institution be able to run Legacy and have all the comments, attachments,
etc available for their access and review.

Re: [LegacyUG] Legacy Cloud

2020-12-28 Thread Gary 'n Mic McFall
Hi, Jane. Barry Huntsinger requested information, too, so I thought I'd
respond to the group in case others were interested.

I had been using Picasa for years, tagging faces in ~90,000 pictures - a
job that's never done. Anyway, I've been looking for a replacement ever
since google pulled support (a nasty, anti-customer service decision),
hopefully with similar functionality & an import function for face tags
from Picasa. I couldn't find anything that met my needs. I was starting
to panic, wondering if/when Microsoft would update Windows & break the now
unsupported Picasa software.

Then, I came upon ACDSee. It had the functionality I wanted plus more, but
did not have import capability from Picasa. My concern was great, so I
decided to make the plunge, converting manually. It's been a long process,
made possible by my being retired & being home bound thanks to covid.
Their 2021 versions brought a great surprise, the ability to import name
tags from Picasa. I'm working w/ their support, requesting that a future
enhancement include the option to import key words & captions. I'm sure
that at some point, that will be a feature.

I started out w/ their Photo Studio Home software. It met most of my
needs, but after attending a few of their seminars & seeing other available
functionality, I updated to their Photo Studio Ultimate.

https://www.acdsee.com/en/store

I love the software & am very happy that I finally got the courage to jump
the Picasa ship!

[LegacyUG] LEGACY and GOOGLE DRIVE

2020-12-20 Thread Gary Crull
Question.

I have my genealogy supporting folders on GOOGLE DRIVE for remote family
members to be able to refer to.

Just got to wondering if LEGACY and it's supporting folders/files could be
part of G-Drive as well?

I must be missing something. Can you be more specific as to how to find

Re: [LegacyUG] Legacy Cloud

I have no reason to doubt what they're saying; however, I've been
anti-google ever since they dropped support for Picasa w/o a way to export
data, software in which I had added faces to ~80K pictures, a process that
took countless hours over many, many years. Fortunately, I found a new
picture management software that has an import function from Picasa.
Carbonite has worked fine for me, and like the old saying goes, if it ain't
broke, don't fix it. As google, trust is gone; screw me once and there's
no second chance. :)

I use basic Carbonite. A couple of clarifications:

   1. Unless I pause Carbonite, my files are continuously backed up through
the day, not once per day.
   2. Video files are backed up automatically per instructions on this
   page, "

https://support.carbonite.com/articles/Personal-Mac-Windows-Adding-Excluded-Files-to-Your-Backup;.
It's a one-time manual process per video file type (avi, mov, etc.), but it
   works flawlessly.

Hi, Gloria. Sorry, I don't use dropbox, so I don't have an answer to your
question. I've been working with family history (with Legacy software) and
family pictures (now with ACDSee) for almost 20 years. It gives me a lot
of comfort knowing that Carbonite updates files as I work through the day.

Now I seldom get any. What happened? I'd think with Covid-19 on the loose,

[LegacyUG] Reports

2020-06-02 Thread Gary 'n Mic McFall
Good morning. My wife's father was one of 21 children from the same
parents. One of the family has asked how many grandchildren, etc., that
union has. I looked, but can't find, a report option that will provide the
number of descendants by relationship (child, grandchild, etc.) for a
husband/wife. Is there such a thing available?

Thanks in advance . . .

2020-04-27 Thread Gary Crull
I use several of the 9 TAGs available (I have the deluxe registered
version of Legacy 9) for various purposes.

But, poking around in settings I see no way as to how to change the COLOR
on an *individual tag*. Am I missing something? It appears it's an all or
none choice of color!

What app do you use to 'sync' Legacy between your MAIN computer and a

What do you feel is the advantage of your choice vs another app?

[LegacyUG] Reports question

2019-02-18 Thread Gary Crull
I have a question concerning FGS and descendants reports.

I have a situation (A) where the father had a child from a previous
marriage. Another situation (B) where the father married a widow who had a
child from a previous marriage.

In neither situation, basing these reports on the FATHER, does the child
from the previous marriage show on the reports. The previous spouse is
noted, but not the children.

How, or can, step-children be shown on these reports based on the FATHER.
It looks like the only way is to base the reports on the MOTHER. Seems
there ought to be a way of showing step-children on based on either the
father or mother! Am I missing, or overlooking, a setting for these report
formats?

For examples illustrating my point please contact me at
treeclimber1...@gmail.com

Thanks for any help.

[LegacyUG] Legacy - Web Pages

2018-12-21 Thread Gary Crull
I'm thinking of putting my research on to a web site. As I understand it,
this can be done in LEGACY.

I have some questions though...
1) is just the basic information for individuals put on the site
2) are any notes for individuals put on the site
3) is anything in the media gallery (photos, documents etc) for individuals
attached put on the site
4) how 'hard' is it to create a site
5) how does the 'world' know you have a site
6) can the site be controlled as to who can view it

Does anyone have a site they've created with LEGACY that I could look at to
see what one looks like?

[LegacyUG] Legacy - syncing with multiple computers -

2018-08-07 Thread Gary Crull
I use Legacy primarily on my desktop computer. Legacy information (folders,
files) are on a physical internal secondary (D) hard drive. I want to use
my laptop to access my Legacy information when on field trips using
SugarSync to synchronize between the two. But I'm having a problem with the
sync'ing to the laptop.

The structure of the information on the desktop is as follows:
   D:\Genealogy - Legacy Genealogy Families
   AppData
   Data
   Intel
   Legacy FS
   LegacyCharting
   Media

LOCATIONS tab 6.1 is
D:\Genealogy - Legacy Genealogy Families\Data
LOCATIONS tab 6.2 is
 D:\Genealogy - Legacy Genealogy Families\Media

Everything is correct while working on the desktop. FAMILY file(s) are in
the DATA folder, MEDIA information (documents, photos, etc) files are in
the MEDIA folder.

After SugarSync does it's thing and I log off the desktop and log onto the
laptop (after SugarSync does it's thing) and I open the Legacy app

LOCATIONS tab 6.1 is
D:\Genealogy - Legacy Genealogy Families\Data
LOCATIONS tab 6.2 is
 C:\Users\Gary\Documents\Legacy Family Tree\Media

Several items are missing in the MEDIA folder even though they were/are
correct when the app was closed on the desktop.

I've repeatedly attempted to redirect tab 6.2 to the correct path only to
have it revert back! Everything else Legacy related seems to be correct.
And, other information sync'd between machines is correct...just this one
folder and its files aren't!

I'm pretty certain my problem is related to LEGACY not SugarSync but fail
to see what is wrong!

[LegacyUG] Location of Legacy files

2018-07-30 Thread Gary Crull
I have two physical HD's on my computer. I try to keep my "C" drive for the
operation system and use the 2nd physical HD for all other working files,
photos, documents etc etc.

I notice in the LOCATIONS tab in customizing the default path(s) for Legacy
are as follows:
C:\Legacy Genealogy Families\Data
C:\Legacy Genealogy Families\Media

Can these locations be changed to a similar path on my "D" drive and Legacy
still function properly with regards to backups, synchronizing with another
computer using DROPBOX, SUGARSYNC or other syncing programs?

Re: [LegacyUG] Documents

2018-02-22 Thread Gary Crull
To all who've replied

The documents I refer to consist of any format you can think of: WORD, JPG,
PDF, TIF.

I store all my documents in the format -mm-dd (if known)
Surname,Given,ID#, type document. So for this exercise for Henry say I have
a birth record, marriage record, death notice, and a will. These would look
like this:
1910-01-28 Brown,Henry (990) - birth cert
1932-07-13 Brown,Henry (990) - marriage cert
1950-03-25 Brown,Henry (990) - death cert
1950-03-02 Brown,Henry (990) - obit
1949-02-02 Brown,Henry (990) - will

What I've been mulling around is something for Henry Brown (Legacy ID 990)
that would include his INDIVIDUAL sheet, or FGS, with any documents
associated with his ID #.

Thus, what I'd like is a 'container/report' for Henry Brown (990) his
INDIVIDUAL SHEET, (or FGS) with all 5 of these documents in it.

The only solution I've come up so far would be to manually create a
separate 'portfolio' for each individual in my database that would contain
this information.

I did take a look at CLOOZ and it looks like it might might have some
promise. AND, the scrapbook option needs to be checked out further.

Then again perhaps, my idea is a pie in the sky and fool hardy and
unattainable one.

[LegacyUG] Documents

2018-02-22 Thread Gary Crull
I've been doing genealogy for over 35 years, having gathered a vast number
of documents - birth/death/marriage certificates and licenses, obituaries,
wills, probate info, newspaper articles etc - some original, other's
secondary.

I computerized back in the dark ages of personal computer technology (early
70's) with an IBM PC Jr and a floppy disk, two if you could afford it!
Thus, NO availability of storing anything on the computer. As technology
advanced and scanners became available I scanned everything I had collected
to new computers with ample HD's as well as adding new scanned information.

I was a late comer to LEGACY having used 3-4 other software products that
went out of business over the years forcing me to upgrade to newer
products. My last upgrade a few years back was to Legacy (v7.0) and I love
it having kept updates to the present V9.0.

My problem, question??

I have several thousand scanned documents stored on my HD that I have
linked to individuals in my Legacy database. Is there any way of preparing
an output document that would show the individual AND any/all supporting
documents gathered over decades of collecting? I'm not inclined at this
stage of life to even attempt transcribing this supporting information in
to any templates available in Legacy!

Suggestions are welcome.

[LegacyUG] Error message 200002

2017-10-16 Thread Gary Crull
I get this message when trying to print a descendant report.*Error
22 LEAD error invalid bitmap handle.*

Checking for a remedy for this error I find
"*• *Various LEAD Errors are reported from time to time. For example: LEAD
Errors 20001, 20002, 20009, etc. or "Not enough memory available", or
"Invalid height/width", or "Invalid bitmap handle", etc. They are easy to
fix once you identify the picture or pictures that cause the problem.

1. With Legacy closed, find the photo(s) that trigger the LEAD Error."

They may be easy to fix, but my question is - how do I find the offending
culprit(s) in the first place? There's no indication as to which one, or
ones, are causing the problem!

[LegacyUG] Legacy9 & SugarSync

2017-06-27 Thread Gary Crull
I've been using Legacy9 for several weeks now on my main (desktop)
computer. I've set up a color scheme that I like.

I installed Legacy9 on my laptop computer as well. I use SugarSync to sync
information between the two. I recall while working on the desktop version
that SugarSync had an upgrade.

While information seems to be exchanged (sync'd) between the computers the
color scheme isn't the same on the laptop version as is on the desktop.
WHERE is the file(s) that contain the color schemes? WHY aren't they
getting sync'd along with the changes to *data *made on the respective
computers?

I know I'm doing something wrong but don't know if the problem is with
Legacy9 or SugarSync. I must not have the file(s) noted for syncing.

If this is not an appropriate subject for the User's Group please contact
me off list.

Thanks

[LegacyUG] Import Gedcom from Family Tree Maker

2014-08-29 Thread Gary Davis
I created a tree in FTM from a Gedcom out of Legacy. It was a very large
file - about 18,800 individuals. Over several months, some updates were done
to both files, independently of the other. In order to sync my files again,
I created a Gedcom from the modified Family Tree Maker and imported it to
Legacy. Only about 3,000 individuals would automerge, leaving way too many
to check individually. The only option for an export is Gedcom 5.5. Any
suggestions?
Thanks

resulted in 42 separate sheets. I want to end up with everything on one

[LegacyUG] Settings don't stay set - a pet peeve

2010-09-01 Thread Gary A Crull
I have 2 pet peeves that bug me no end. Hopefully someone will be able to
explain why I have this aggravation.

The first is when I set the column width on the columns displayed on the
INDEX tab they don't remain at the width I set them. The next session I
open may or may not see them remain the same. This is especially true
when I've shut down Windows 7 and restart the next day. The width will
revert to a default width - meaning plenty of white space in the columns
with fewer showing than when I narrow the width. (I have 9 columns
defined for display. By manually defining the width by grasping the
column marker and making the columns more narrow I can see in total all
but the 9th one. Only a part of it displays - which is OK.

The 2nd pet peeve is when adding a picture to an individual. I always
have to redefine the path for Legacy to find where my photos are located
(I keep them in a folder within DropBox app). Once it's redefined there's
no problem UNTIL I shut down Windows 7. Then I have to go back and
redefine the path again. Photos that have been attached show up on the
individuals show up normally, it's just when I get ready to add something
new.

I don't understand why these situations occur. Anybody got any ideas or
need more (better) explanation of the situation?

Thanks

Re: [LegacyUG] Keeping track of attached documents

2010-05-13 Thread Gary A Crull
Right now, I don't know if/why I might want to generate a report. But, as
a retired IT Sr Systems Analyst it never hurts to plan ahead and be
prepared! With several hundred documents already scanned and stored I'm
not much inclined to TYPE a transcript version into Legacy!

Further, I don't see a way of including attached documents in any
reports...photos (and anything in the NOTES section) are the only thing
that shows (in the Family Group Report and Individual Report). Appears
that the only way attached documents are visible is when viewed/opened on
screen. Maybe I shouldn't even start attaching them to the Legacy
database, rather leaving them where they are and print if/when/as
needed!?

licenses, etc. In the case of a marriage license, I would quote the

Master Source, then attach the image to the Source Detail. In the case
of an obit, I type out the contents using Transcript, enter it in
Death Notes for the individual, cite the Master Source (the newspaper

Why would you want to create a report of everyone you've attached a

Re: [LegacyUG] Sorting of the combination of children and step children, by birth date

2010-05-09 Thread Gary Elder
Ron, thanks for your reply. I did see the earlier post about linking
children to both sets of parents.

I'm sure there is some underlying reason why linking to both sets of
parents is necessary, but it seems to me Legacy be able to list all
children in the appropriate birth order without having to manually
link them to their step parent. As they say, it is what it is.

Thanks again for your help.

Currently, Legacy shows step-children at the bottom of the children
listings, even though their birth date precedes those of the other
children of the current spouse. Doing a Sort in the Children's
Settings doesn't appear to do the job. Perhaps there is a preference
 setting that I'm missing?

 Gary,

Provided that the Step children are linked to both sets of parents then all
children will sort in date of birth order. If they are only linked to their
natural parents then top children will be those of the parents in the main
 panel of Family View.

How to link to more than one set of parents was described in 3 posts earlier
 today.

Re: [LegacyUG] Microsoft Jet Database Engine stopped

2010-02-19 Thread Gary A Crull
Thanks for all the suggestions from those who responded. Not that I guess
it matters, but I neglected to mention I'm using Legacy 7.4 on Windows 7
Home Premium desktop and Vista Home Premium on the laptop.

DROPBOX says all files up-to-date.

I've done both a RESTART as well as a SHUT DOWN to no avail.

I've not found any .ldb files anywhere.

I don't have the opportunity to close/exit Legacy as the message comes up
immediately and I only have the options of TRY AGAIN, NO or QUIT. NO or
QUIT exits Legacy immediately.

I tried copying the Legacy files from the laptop to a thumbdrive and
attempted to open the file from the thumbdrive by clicking the main
Legacy icon and the file opens! So, obviously Legacy itself is working
correctly. It seems that the file(s) stored in DROPBOX got corrupted in
some manner. Since I've not made any changes to my database I have
redundant backups on the laptop, an external HD and not in any particular
panic about loosing my file altogether. Just want to be able to get a
GOOD version safely back into DROPBOX.

Before doing it, and making a bad situation worse, what's the consensus
of opinion on this plan? Deleting all the Legacy files in the DROPBOX
area; then opening the file from the thumbdrive. From there do a SAVE
FAMILY FILE AS the name I'd been using in DROPBOX. This, hopefully, would
restore a 'good' copy to DROPBOX.

Re: [LegacyUG] subscribing

2010-02-19 Thread Gary Templeman
Yes, you are were doing something wrong. Your error is that due to the link
wrapping, it got broken. You need to manually paste in the part that reads
80c8aml=3domain=LegacyUsers.com (without the parenthisis). When you just
click on the link you are getting only the first part of the URL (that ends
in e02fcd).

On the other hand, since this message got posted, your subscription appears
to be active so something must have gone through OK.

[LegacyUG] Free version vs Deluxe

2010-01-24 Thread Gary McClelland
I am trying out Legacy Standard(free) version and I am a little confused on
report outputs. When I first installed the program, I was prompted to
continue with the standard version or purchase the deluxe version. I chose
the free version and I was able to create and save a descendant report in
.rtf format. However, when I went into the program today and tried to
output a report in .rtf, the option to create the report in .rtf was not
listed in the program.

Is the ability to create .rtf documents only available in the Deluxe
version?

RE: [LegacyUG] Free version vs Deluxe

2010-01-24 Thread Gary McClelland
I had accessed the Descendant reports through the icon Reports. Once I went
to ReportsBooks and Others, I could save in .rtf format. Thanks everyone.

Gary,

No, it is available in both. You will find it on the opening screen in the
panel on the right hand side. You are not, by any chance, looking at the
Descendant Chart Report are you, that is not available in rtf.

Re: [LegacyUG] Legacy with a Netbook

2010-01-01 Thread Gary Elder
I tried Dropbox and found it be OK, but the free version (2 gb limit)
wasn't enough to hold my family files and media files. If you want to
pay for added capacity it is a great offsite option.

I'm currently using Windows Live Sync, which automatically syncs my
netbook to my desktop, with no file size limitations, all for free. I
put my media in the Legacy data folder, then set Live Sync to sync it
with the data folder on my desktop.

Has anyone on this list used this program ?  If so, how did it work for your
 Legacy database?

 Happy New Year To All

I agree Ginny, but I was told by LegacySupport that you can update your
desktop from the latest research done on your laptop, by backing up to your
flash drive and then downloading to your desktop. It works for me but I am
nervous about overwriting all the time. Any other suggestions other than
updating both copies of Legacy on each machine?
 Thanks,
 Geri

I have been running legcy program on my acer net book for a year without
problems.  It is much easier to take to the library to do research.  I also
have the legacy program on my othercomputer so you need to update both
 systems accordingly.

I was wondering if any one has tried to run legacy on a net book? I did not
 see anything in the faqs?
