Re: [LegacyUG] Media - Picture File Extension

2022-10-16 Thread Ian Thomas
The Apple format may be the same as many websites now use, invented by Google
(WEBP)

Possibly of use to some, is a free program for Windows that will convert from
many image file formats to others (eg, to JPG) - it is Xnconvert.

XnConvert Version 1.83 - windows (Jan 16 2020) - Libformat version 7.37

Email: cont...@xnview.com
URL: http://www.xnconvert.com

I use it mainly for .webp to .jpg or .png

It can convert one or many image files from one or numerous folders, and put
the converted file into the original folder or into a common folder.
This is because it uses "drag and drop" - very easy to use, but does require a
little work to select the formats and folder.

The simplest way from pictures on iPhone would be to copy all required from the
iPhone, to a folder on Windows or to a USB that can be attached to your Windows
machine - Legacy Family tree is on Windows.

Then use XnConvert

Change your settings in iPhone to JPG. Makes life a lot simpler. Storage on
iPhone is cheap - $1/mo fo 50 GB storage in iCloud.

If you don’t want to do that, then get a photo program that converts Apple
format to Jpg and do that for every photo you take and want to use in Legacy.
That’s a pain and requires lots of time and fiddling with file formats, saving
files, creating folders, etc.

Good luck!

June,

It is always necessary to back up all your data including pictures off your

If you are asking whether you need to copy into the default Legacy Media folder

Customise 6.2 to your own default folder for media. When you have, you won't be
asked to copy when you link from ...\Pictures\Legacy\ or a sub-folder of it.

Re: [LegacyUG] Media ( Pictures ) ?

2019-10-11 Thread Brian Kelly
The broken media links indicate that a file which is currently linked to
something in your data (person, event, source etc. See Chris Hill's
reply) has been moved or the file name has changed.

Legacy 9 includes a tool to help you find these missing files. It will
search your hard drive(s) looking for all the files with the filenames
currently used. I suggest you use that tool first to fix as many links
as possible.

Go to Tools > Media Relinker
You can use that tool to show a list of all the missing files and where
they are used.

Click on "Relink my media" to have Legacy search for the missing files.
If it finds only one copy of a file it will amend the internal links in
Legacy to point to that file. If it finds multiple copies with the same
name it will present you with a list of the files it found to let you
choose which copy should be used.

Re: [LegacyUG] Media ( Pictures ) ?

2019-10-11 Thread Chris Hill

Hi

There are several places within Legacy where you can attach media,
usually photo, files. This could be to an individual, a marriage, to a
virtual items such as a baptism using the + button to the right, to an
event on the individual or marriage, or possibly to a source. Usually,
you can set them by clicking on the icon of a 'TV with two people in it'
and then follow the dialog to select the type of media and the location
that it is in.

In every case Legacy will store the name of the file and the folder
in which it is located. The 'broken media links' indicates that when
following the saved file name and location Legacy could not actually
find the file, ie it is not in the correct folder or it has a different
file name. First rule - NEVER change or move media files.

By default, Legacy would expect you to use the default media folder,
which you can override by modifying the setting in Options / 6.2. If the
file is within that folder, or a folder beneath it, Legacy will actually
put a short cut to it, rather than a direct link to the physical
location. Just below 6.2 there is a button to show the media location.

From my database, this is the list of media locations:

1 [Family File Folder]\Media\BMD\Canada\Marriage\
2 [Family File Folder]\Media\BMD\UK\Birth\
3 [Family File Folder]\Media\BMD\UK\Death\
4 [Family File Folder]\Media\BMD\UK\Marriage\
5 [Family File Folder]\Media\Buildings\
6 [Family File Folder]\Media\Census\Canada 1911\
7 [Family File Folder]\Media\Census\Canada 1921\
8 [Family File Folder]\Media\Census\England 1841\
9 [Family File Folder]\Media\Census\England 1851\
10 [Family File Folder]\Media\Census\England 1861\
11 [Family File Folder]\Media\Census\England 1871\
12 [Family File Folder]\Media\Census\England 1881\
13 [Family File Folder]\Media\Census\England 1891\
14 [Family File Folder]\Media\Census\England 1901\
15 [Family File Folder]\Media\Census\England 1911\
16 [Family File Folder]\Media\Census\England 1939\
17 [Family File Folder]\Media\Census\USA 1910\
18 [Family File Folder]\Media\Census\USA 1930\
19 [Family File Folder]\Media\Census\USA 1940\
20 [Family File Folder]\Media\Census\Wales 1901\
21 [Family File Folder]\Media\Census\Wales 1939\
22 [Family File Folder]\Media\Immigration\
23 [Family File Folder]\Media\Maps\
24 [Family File Folder]\Media\Person\
25 [Family File Folder]\Media\Probate\

So I put them all within the default media folder, set within
Options / 6.2, and I use multiple folders below that to structure them.

If I had included files outside of the Media folder, then Legacy
would be holding the file drive/folder structure.

From 6.2 you can also get Legacy to scan for missing media. If it
finds issues you will have a choice.

1. You can ask Legacy to try and locate the missing files, generally
by scanning through you PC looking for them. Can be VERY long, my PC has
about 2 to 3 media files on it. Of course, it will only find
files with the right file name.

2. You can decide to look for the file directly, on the basis that
you either know its new file name or the location that you moved it to.

Hope this helps.

Regards

Chris

media files.

I did find this link:

Re: [LegacyUG] Media Files - unlinked, but where do I find the item ?

2019-01-20 Thread Dave Naylor

Hello Chris,

If all else fails... one trick I've used for a few things like this is
to generate a gedcom of your database. Obviously for this time you need
to include graphic links. Then open the gedcom with a text editor and
do a Search for part of the filename. The line with that filename will
begin with a number, and the lines immediately above it with a lower
number will indicate the item that's linked to the filename.

This trick also comes in handy when searching for specific text that you
know exists somewhere in a Legacy file.

Hope this helps.

Cheers! -- Dave N.

The file is linked to one of the sources you have for Joseph Edgar
Swann, it is not linked directly to him so you will not find it in his
media Gallery. Open his attached sources and you will find the missing
media linked to one of those. Hopefully the source names will give you
the clue as to which one has the missing media.

Re: [LegacyUG] Media Files - unlinked, but where do I find the item ?

2019-01-20 Thread Chris Hill

Hi Chris

Given that you know the file name that Legacy thinks it - London
England Electoral Registers 18471965(50).jpg - you now need to find out
where it is.

Normally with those it is because I have renamed the file but left
it the the same folder. That gives we a couple of options. From the
Media error dialog, you can just do a manual search, starting in the
same folder, but obviously you wander around until you find it.

Not easy, so it would be better to go outside of Legacy and let
Windows look for it. Start searching anywhere in the SWANN Media folder
and downwards, and try to use a match key for part of it. You could also
put a date range on the search to limit when it was last modified.

Hopefully, you have slightly changed it or just moved it elsewhere.
Also, have a look in the Recycle Bin in case you deleted it.

Regards

Chris

Re: [LegacyUG] Media File separation

2018-08-17 Thread Cathy Pinner

Jerry,
I guess you mean Washington State and not Western Australia as you're
not part of my Legacy Group here :-D

Yes you can keep your media in sub-folders of the one Media folder.
You tell Legacy at Options - Customise 6.2 where that parent Media
folder is.
What sub-folders you use is up to you. Whatever organisation system that
makes sense to you. The key is that they are all sub-folders of the one
folder rather than folders scattered around your computer.

You can move attached media around into different sub-folders and then
use the Legacy Tool, the Media Relinker, to fix the links in Legacy.
It's a good idea to make sure you don't have broken media links before
you start re-arranging.
Provided a) you don't have too many levels of sub-folders and b) you
haven't changed the actual filenames, then all will be relinked. In the
Relinker you MUST make sure you choose the copy of the media that is not
only the right file but the right file in the right folder if it finds
more than one copy.

I hope the "muddle" does not metastasize for either of us.

I never found a real fix. My work-around was to attach the image in the picture gallery.

The Picture Gallery and Media Gallery really seem quite muddled at times.

I am experiencing EXACTLY the same problem.

My symptoms:

(1)  preferred picture showing in family view

(2) no pictures showing in media gallery

(3) no pictures attached to this person according to picture gallery tool

(4) in media gallery, no events have an * in the drop down indicating no pictures attached for this individual

(5) In settings == Options > customize > 8.9

-checked box for Show the picture

-radio button set All Preferred

-check box set "If there is no picture at all, display a place holder silhouette"

I only seem to have this problem with one individual.  I submitted a support request to look at this.

Hi Teresa,

The setting I was particularly referring to at Options - Customise 8.9 was
If there is no Individual picture show any other picture associated ...

Does this person have Events shared from someone else?
I think you'll find it's a picture attached to that shared event.
I just tested this but the Event is there in the drop down list with
asterisk so I'm not positive. * Census (Shared)

Have you done File - File Maintenance - Check/Repair? It may be sorted
by that re-indexing of the database.

Check the Media Gallery for the person rather than the Picture Centre

move up to "all" or look down the list for items with asterisks.

Are you sure that there isn't a window open in Legacy that is simply not
visible to you at that moment? That is often the cause of what appears
to be a freeze.

Try using Alt-Tab to cycle through your open windows - hold your left
thumb on the Alt key, and tap the Tab key as many times as you need to
cycle through the open windows until you get to the one you're looking
for (or get back to where you started). When you're where you want to
be, let go of the Alt key. To cycle "backwards", hold down the Shift
key as well.

Alternatively, take your cursor to the taskbar (usually at the bottom of
the screen, though it can be set elsewhere), and hover over the Legacy
icon. Exactly what you see depends on the version of Windows you're
using, but they're mostly similar. Do you see the window you're
currently using, or a different one? Click on it to go to that window.

If this doesn't solve your problem, would you tell us *exactly* what
you're doing when you encounter this behaviour, please? It may help us
pinpoint what is going on.

Re: [LegacyUG] Media Relink

2017-04-29 Thread Cathy Pinner

Madeleine,
It seems in this case it would be quicker to relink them yourself by
going to the gallery where they are linked. This information is on the
missing media list.
When you click on the icons for the missing media, you get the choice to
use the Media Relinker or to find them yourself.
You may want to copy them out of your Family Tree Maker Media folder and
link to them in a sub-folder of your Legacy Media.

The Relinker will search the entire drive to find your picture files.
When complete, you can choose to have them copied into the Legacy
default Media file location. You cannot specify a folder to search in
the Relinker, just a Drive.

The Family Tree Maker file could be an issue — that sounds like a
database and not a picture file. Legacy will only link picture files
with an extension of JPEG, PNG & document files like PDF, Word.
Normally, you would only link picture files. So, I am not sure what
you mean by FTM file??

Leon, thanks for your reply.
I have specified the C: drive but the .tmp file or .docx file is in a Family
Tree Maker Media folder on the C:drive. It takes about 20 mins for the for
the relinker to search my C:drive. I have many media files, not Legacy ones.
I did an add media to the persons event or source detail and managed to reduce
the number of missing media from 18 to 14, but I thought maybe there was some
quicker way to tell the re-linker where to look. Apparently not.

[LegacyUG] Media and document files

2017-04-29 Thread Ian Thomas
I have a general question about linked media files and other linked documents,
which partly arises from Alan Thompson's recent post about the lf.jpg file or
multiple files (news to me). I certainly don't want them (lf.jpg) attached to
Legacy-generated outputs.

Usually, I have scanned my documents to PDF and my photographs to JPG or PNG
file formats (sometimes, as groups of small photos, to PDF). At this point I
haven't wanted to have Legacy FT create "albums" or "books" or its other
document or web outputs that might include my images or relevant documents, but
may soon want to have (A4-sized) PDF documents, some of them multi-page, within
some Legacy-generated document output.
What are the options for doing that?
My practice is to save PDF outputs from the Trove newspaper scans (Australia),
rather than JPG images, and also separately to have for each its NLA scan URL
and its text content (my accurate transcription) in a plain text file. This
generates a lot of files. I'm not sure yet what I will do to incorporate them
into the overall Legacy data collection.

Missing (Legacy 9)

When I run the Check All Media Locations routine to make a list of all missing
medial files, the resulting report always includes the default lf.jpg file
which Legacy automatically associates with any non-picture document (eg pdfs
etc) linked to one's tree

Does anyone know if there is any way to exclude this file from the report? The
reason I ask is because, of the approximately 10,000 files that are listed when
I run the report for my legacy family tree, some 9,800 are for this one file -
and it is annoying to have to manually remove them from the report before I
investigate the files that are genuinely missing.

Re: [LegacyUG] Media V 9

2017-04-25 Thread Chris Hill
That was changed when they decided to install Legacy into the Program Files
folder, which is where it should have been in any case. Access to that
folder in controlled and they cannot just dump personal data files into it,
so they had to find a different location for them.

By default they decided to use My Documents\Legacy Family Tree\ for its
folders, but you can change that from the Options > Customise > 6 Locations
to set them where you want them. At least it does keep a different set of
settings across multiple different Legacy files if you have multiple
families.

If you have 'lost' media you can run the Tools > Media Relinker to see if
any are missing and find them. Alternatively, let it generate a list of
missing media and then locate them yourself, and move them if needed and
then reset the media link in the item.

One issue that I have with Legacy and media files is that it wants to put
them all into a single folder while I want them structured, so that I get
\Media\Census\England 1851, \Media\BMD\Marriage etc. Whenever I attach a new
media item to an entry I get asked if I want to move it or leave it where it
is, with the option to stop asking for that session. What I really want is
to force the default to assume that I have already moved the media to the
correct location and stop trying to move it.

Regards

Chris

The new updates to Legacy 8 (8.0.0.601) and 9 (9.0.0.165) have added a
routine to Check/Repair to check for these too long filenames and the
log file should tell you what they are.

I have yet to test it. First I have to add some files that have paths or
names that are too long.

I didn't know about the "path too long" problem, but I'm guessing I
haven't run into it because, with a few exceptions, I use a numerical
system for files. Early on, too many sources pertained to too many
surnames and I found myself getting stuck as to how to name them with
surnames. Once I did pick one, turned out I couldn't find what I was
looking for because I couldn't remember which name I picked.

Does anyone not use Legacy Family Tree for media? The media backup
and Media Relinker are unreliable and I’m considering not using the
software for recording media any more. Yesterday I found out that the
backups that I religiously did were not including masses of documents
and media. In the mail archives I found a comment by Richard
Wasshnova that Legacy adds a considerable number of characters to the
path of a given medium. Although I have used a little utility called
TLPD to search out any paths that are too long, it seems my effort has
been for naught.

In addition to asking whether anyone uses Legacy Family Tree only for
data and not media, I’m very curious now to learn how other people are
naming their documents to avoid the path too long problem.

Re: [LegacyUG] Media Relinking

2017-04-22 Thread Richard Van Wasshnova
Priscilla,

I assume your files are in multi-branching directories like mine are.
My default location of media files:
C:\Users\Richard\Documents\Legacy Family Tree\Media\V\

>From there a typical path to a file is:
Docs\Civil_Records\France\Dept_Meuse\Marriage_Villers_&_Gratriiau.jpg

The combined default and specific file path is easily under windows max
however the backup media zip file inserts this ahead of that path:
C:\Users\Richard\Documents\Legacy Family Tree\Data\vanwasshnova-media
2017-04-19 9.41.09 PM.zip\

This total path gets to be near window max:
C:\Users\Richard\Documents\Legacy Family Tree\Data\vanwasshnova-media
2017-04-19 9.41.09 PM.zip\Users\Richard\Documents\Legacy Family
Tree\Media\V\Docs\Civil_Records\France\Dept_Meuse\Marriage_Villers_&_Gratriiau.jpg

If the filename were 20 characters longer it would simply not be added to
the zip backup with no warning. Only when I restore media to my laptop
would I realize the oversize file is missing.

To shorten the backup you could delete the time of day 9.41.09 PM from the
dafault (11 characters) or change Legacy Family Tree directory to LFT8 (28
character savings since it appears twice in the path).

Good luck,
Richard Van Wasshnova

Access database? Legacy is still using that, yes? LTools will run raw
SQL, but I want to see what's happening first and SELECT is not allowed.

(3) I'm guessing I could export to GEDCOM, change the paths with search
and replace and re-import the GEDCOM, but THAT I'm afraid will cause
more problems that I don't want to deal with -- like messing up or
losing events or sources.

Any thoughts? Like everyone else, I have thousands of links to media

Open Office is a free suite that includes a MS Access compatible data

Re: [LegacyUG] Media file locations

2017-02-03 Thread Cathy Pinner
The path to the top media folder on Google Drive should be set at
Options - Customise 6.2.

Google Drive has a folder on your computer that syncs to the cloud.
If you click the Google Drive icon in your System Tray there's an option
to open that folder and then you can see the path.

This will need to be done on each computer - and because 6.2 is a family
file specific setting, you'll probably need to do it again each time you
change computer with your Legacy file. It really depends where the
Google Drive folder is. I control this when I set up a new computer.

Check out Tools - Gather my Media if you discover some are not in your

copies media linked to Legacy from one place to another and fixes the

What you can get is a list of attached media and who it is attached to.
If you save that as a PDF it is searchable.

Re: [LegacyUG] Media File Transfer

2016-12-20 Thread Cathy Pinner

Richard,

The Media Relinker is NOT a recipe for disaster.

It does not AUTO LINK files.

When it finds files of the same name as the one that is missing it
PRESENTS them for you to make a choice whether it is the right file in
the right folder or the right file in a different folder or the wrong
file altogether.

Re the media zip problem with path length.
I don't zip my Legacy Media so I haven't encountered the problem. I
backup to an external drive and than copy from the external drive to a
new computer and then re-establish the Dropbox link as the media is in
Dropbox and it's quicker to copy the files than download them all again
from Dropbox.

The only time I use the Legacy Media backup option is if I'm sending
part of my file to a cousin and want to send the related media as well.
This isn't something I do very often.

Folks:

Voila!!

I am not certain exactly why it worked this time but I did the following:

When I backed up my database on my desktop, I had been saving with time and
date. I changed this.

I then deleted legacy completely on my laptop. I also went into documents and
deleted Legacy Family Tree.

I then ran a program called Ccleaner on my registry to remove all remnants of
Legacy.

I re-installed Legacy.

When I extracted the media file, this is where I find 1,462 images This PC
Documents Legacy Family Tree Media Users georg Documents Legacy Family
Tree Media.

In addition to the images I also have a users folder. So in addition to the
above string it continues as Users George Documents Legacy Family Tree Media
and I find an additional 6,943 images.

I don’t understand why I get the two locations for the images.

I am still nervous to add additional images on my laptop when I am away this
winter and then trying to re-install on my desktop when I return.

I really appreciate all the help that has been offered.

items on my desktop but only about 8,000 on the laptop.

Further when I transfer my data file it asks if I want to overwrite the

However it does not ask me to overwrite the media files. Would this

Oh, I forgot to mention. Not all users of Win10 are running the "Anniversary
Edition, version 1607". This is the only version in which the max_path can
be enabled. (To check your version, SETTINGS. SYSTEM, ABOUT.)

Cathy,

The media relinker seems like a recipe for disaster. If it should find a
file with the right name in some off the wall folder it probably is not the
sane file and I wouldn't want my laptop Legacy to mismatch the desktop

If anyone is creating incomplete media backups due to exceeding the 260

Legacy on one computer I don't know they could check for the problem but
they should. Since George does have a 2nd computer with Legacy it is

What if you create a media backup with shorter filename. My default is:

Don't jump for joy just yet. Not all programs support this feature yet. Most
of the most popular program already do. But the big question is if the
32-bit legacy program ironically named Legacy has properly manifested
itself to allow the longer file names. Only the programmers at Legacy can
answer this question.

So..how about it Legacy? Do you support the new longer names in Win10 or
not?

(of course we could all tell by attempting to enable the longer file names
by using the Group Policy Editor and then test it out in Legacy.)

Re: [LegacyUG] Media File Transfer

2016-12-20 Thread Cathy Pinner

Richard,

To solve the path issue, DO NOT change the name of the Legacy Family
Tree folder.

NOTE: The folder for your Legacy settings is hardwired to
...\Documents\Legacy Family Tree\_AppData\
Change any of that and it will simply be recreated with Legacy Defaults
the next time you open Legacy - and if you have the Deluxe version,
you'll be opening the Standard version as your Licence file is kept in
that folder as well.

What you can do is move your media elsewhere so that it doesn't have
that long initial path.

Mine is long enough: D:\Cloud\Dropbox\Legacy Media\

Cathy

Richard Van Wasshnova wrote:

George,

Are your media files in one to 3 big folders or do you have multi
branching trees with sub>sub> sub folders?
I do and the file path and names are quite long. When Legacy Backup
creates a zip file it greatly extends the path and sometimes it can
exceed the Windows max. file path of 260 characters.

Here is a path to some of my media:
C:\Users\Richard\Documents\Legacy Family Tree\Media\V\Docs\church
documents\

When Legacy creates a media backup zip file it adds roughly 100
characters to the file path:
C:\Users\Richard\Documents\Legacy Family Tree\Data\vanwasshnova-media
2016-12-06 9.28.37 AM.zip\Users\Richard\Documents\Legacy Family
Tree\Media\V\Docs\church documents\

Depending on the subfolders and filename lengths you can easily exceed
260 char max and your backup media zip files will not contain all of
your media and are then worth less (not totally worthless). You will
not see any errors reported. The longer file path plus name media will
simply not show up in the media backup. I considered changing the
Legacy Family Tree folder name to LFT8 as it appears doubled in the
zip file.

Could that be your problem?

Re: [LegacyUG] Media File Transfer

2016-12-19 Thread Cathy Pinner

George,

First find out where you unzipped your media backup or copied your media
folders to.
Then at Options - Customise 6.2 enter your top media folder (assuming
you have media in a number of sub-folders under one folder)

That may be enough to find all your media re-linked

If not, go to Tools - Media Relinker. It will search your computer for
all media files and then present the ones it finds with the same names
as ones linked to Legacy so that you can confirm whether or not it has
found the right file. If you use the button that says something like
also relink others in this folder, the task is quicker.

Re: [LegacyUG] Media File Transfer

2016-12-14 Thread George
Dear Brian:

Thank you very much for your reply.

I had a closer look at my media file on my desktop and I have duplicate
files for some of the items, the only difference being a (0) at the end of
the file number. That is probably what is accounting for the difference
between the desktop and the laptop. Is there some way I would know which one
to delete? Or should I just leave them there as it does not seem to be
creating a problem. I have lots of space on my hard drive.

Thanks again.

George

Since you cannot restore your media files from within Legacy you cannot be
overwriting media. That is why you are not seeing the warning about
overwriting media. The difference in files on the desktop and the laptop
probably means you have media files on the desktop which are not linked to
anything in your file so they are not included in the backup of your Legacy
media and were not restored to the laptop when you extracted the media from
your media backup file.

To restore from your media backup you need to use Windows compressed file
tools or another program which can extract files from a .zip compressed
file.

[LegacyUG] Media File Transfer

2016-12-14 Thread George
I purchased a new laptop to take south with me this year. I have been able
to transfer my data to it with no problem. The first time I transferred my
media I followed the instructions available on Legacy's site. Everything
seemed to go well. I decided to check the number of items in the media
folder on the laptop compared to those on my desktop. I have about 11,000
items on my desktop but only about 8,000 on the laptop.

Further when I transfer my data file it asks if I want to overwrite the
existing file, and I say yes and everything seems to be OK with that part.

Re: [LegacyUG] Media file names

2016-08-04 Thread Evelyn ..
I have 18,000+ individuals. There are way too many source files (almost
9,500) to keep straight especially when I may not know the full name at the
time I find the file (some have initials, nickname, or partial name in the
file). I use a combination of the old paper style & new digital files.

Folder examples:

MRIN His Name - Her name(the MRIN number is unique, the names are for
me to read)

1541 George Rix - Anna Gooch

Files inside folder

-MM-DD file name

1940-06-01 census-WA King Seattle-Rix George
1886-06-01 Rix George-birth cert

I can use Legacy to find the MRIN. Or I can use Windows File Explorer to
search for a name. I like the 60 second rule... find the info I want in 60
seconds or less.

When I have children who get married, and therefore get their own MRIN, I
copy all the pre-marriage files (like birth & census records) that refer to
the individual into their own MRIN folder. This creates several copies of
some of the files, but all of 1 persons records are all together when I
need them.

Re: [LegacyUG] Media storage

2016-03-05 Thread Cathy Pinner

Carol,

Take a look at your Media Paths list.
Either at options - customise 6.2 or View - Master Lists - Media Folder
List.
There is a Legacy shortcut code available for the folder designated at
6.2 [Default Media Folder]\
If it is being used for all folder paths then all you have to do on
another computer is set Option 6.2 to the new path to the top media folder.
If it isn't being used you can use Search and Replace on Lists -Media
Folders to replace the appropriate bit of the path with this.
This is new in Legacy 8 so isn't automatically updated if you've come
from earlier versions of Legacy. Whether it is used automatically also
depends on how you've set up your media and option 6.2.
It's worth doing the search and replace. It makes changing computers
with media a breeze.
If you are changing Option 6.2 on a library computer, no doubt you need
to change it back before you leave.

However, if you're getting duplicate images at the library when you try
to reconnect, that means you are taking duplicate images on your usb drive.

Now when I go through the media connect process, it brings up
duplicate images asking if this is the correct image. That works well
for awhile, then I get an error message and the whole program crashes,
making me begin again (with the same result) or forego having
my images connected. This is extremely frustrating.

Any solution?

Good Afternoon,
If internet service is not available. Put all of the media files on a
flash drive.

Take it with you to use as reference, accessing the files by name.

Legacy is not necessary to have with you when doing research. A simple
pdf or rtf chart will work for quick lookups.
Also using a gedcom viewer or android app will work to take a quick look
at files.

Re: [LegacyUG] Media storage

2016-03-05 Thread Paul Gray
Actually, Dropbox does not require constant internet access. The design of
Dropbox (and other similar services) is that there is a Dropbox folder on
your local computer(s) and an extra copy in the cloud. Legacy (and other
programs as well) always use the local copy of your file. When file updates
are done, those updates are copied up into the cloud either immediately if
you are currently connected to the internet or if not, the next time you
connect. It also copies the updates down to the "other computer", again
either immediately of later, depending upon that computer's connection
status.
