Re: What's next for Telux?

2006-12-03 Thread Ori Idan

I can prepare a new presentation about a project I am currently working on.
Running Linux on an ARM 7 board.
This is a presentation similar to the one I gave on running Linux on a PPC
board.
This one might be even more interesting since ARM7 processors does not have
MMU.

The presentation can be ready in about 3 weeks.

I can also give a rerun of one of my other presentations

Well, today Telux is going to have the last presentation in the "Welcome

The
problem is that no one commmitted to give any presentations. So here are
some
ideas on what we can do:

1. Re-runs. Can any of the previous presenters give a re-run of their
previously given presentations?

2. Interactive hacking. Gabor gave a very nice Test::Live session for the
Israeli Perl Mongers. We can do something similar: take a project, and add
tests, fix bugs together etc.

3. Distribution Comparison Session - this idea came up on the Haifux
mailing
list once:

http://www.mail-archive.com/lin-club%40stud.vipe.technion.ac.il/msg00272.html

I liked it back then and I still do. Would anybody be interested in such a
thing?

4. A Lightning Talks session.

5. New Presentations - yes I know it's an unorthodox idea, but maybe
someone
can prepare some in time.

I have gdm running on the remote machine.
I tried logging in to a different user, not the current loged in user.
I also tried simple ssh -X and tried to start a simple program like gedit.
I got a "cannot open display" error (I made sure the DISPLAY variable is

I think you've got some things confused - in order to remote login to a
computer using gdm, you need to log in using XDMCP - you start an XDMCP
connection from your local X server to your remote login manager (gdm on
the remote computer) and ask it to run your session. xhost is used only
to control how remote X clients access your current local session, which
you only have after you login locally.

However I still can not start gdm or any other X program from the remote

>From your description above, I assume you have a local X login, and use
SSH from a local X terminal to connect to your remote computer and try
to run gdm there ? As I said - this is not how you do remote login.

What you need to do, is to login directly to the remote computer, with
out logging in locally first. You local DM should have an option for
"remote login" - possibly under an "actions" menu. try that.

Otherwise, run X -help and look for the -query, -broadcast and -indirect
options.

Re: FW: primary address of devices

2006-12-23 Thread Ori Idan

1. When issuing an ibfind (or ibdev) command, no hardware access is done so
no error will be returned. however if you write or read to/from the device,
the results are unpredictable.
2. IEEE4888.2 provides a way to enumerate the devices, I do not recall how
it is done. However not all devices support it.
3. The name is not related to the device itself so you can call it any name
you want.
4. Your other mail contained a question about select and gpib library, I
think you can use select like you use on any other file or socket, however I
have never tried it myself.
In GPIB usually you do not need asynchronous transfer since devices never
talk on their own will but allways as a result of the master issuing a query
command.

Disclaimer: All the above is written from my knowledge of GPIB (I have used
GPIB for more then 10 years) not with knowledge about this specific library.

*Subject:* primary address of devices

Hi, sorry in advance if some of my questions are too basic and even not
logic.
My application needs to support connecting up to 30 devices (actually gsm
simulators) to the gpib board in the computer.
All those devices have the same primary address (pad) of 14 and no
secondary addrss.
They have a way to modify in advance their pad. However:
1. If I did not modify the pad of those devices and left all of them with
14, what would happen if I issue an ibdev() in my application?
will it return an error or there will be an attempt to open one of the
devices?
The second option would be excelent as immediately after openning any
device with this pad, I could issue an ibpad() to change it's pad to any
other address except 14, but logically I believe the first option will
happen.
2. Is there a way for the application to obtain the pad of any device
connected to the gpib board _before_ openning this device thru ibdev() or
ibfind()?
Is there any function that does this or should I manually input this pad
either to the application or to the gpib.conf file?
3. If I want to open a device using ibfind() thru it's name as entered in
the gpib.conf file,
am I free to give whatever name to each device or is there a limitation
for this name to match something related to the device?
I hope my questions are clear, thanks, Rafi.

I have good experience with IBM and DELL.
I have had success connecting both of them with Wifi.
Most of them come with Intel WP2100 or WP2200 which have a free driver but
non-free firmware.
You compile the driver, download the firmware (free as in free beer) to
/usr/lib/firmware/hotplug
then when you modprobe the driver it will automaticly loads the firmware.

How about this (never tried it myself):
Make sure /dev/cmos exists, and that the relevant kernel module is
available.
Set your bios to boot from CD
copy /dev/cmos to a file
Set your bios to not boot from CS
copy /dev/cmos to another file

Copy the relevant file to /dev/cmos.

Isn't this only relevant for those ancient "winmodem" which were
software-only built-in modems in laptops?
(and even then, many of them worked with Linux thanks to sites like the
one above).
If he buys a desktop then he can get a simple AT-compliant PCI modem,

Re: MySQL License

2007-02-25 Thread Ori Idan

One thing we need to remember GPL CAN BE COMMERCIAL!
People are confusing between commercial and propriatry.

In MySQL if your software is GPL you do not need to pay. (remember you may
sell GPL so GPL is also commercial).
If your software is under another FLOSS license you can still use MySQL
without paying.

If your software is PROPRIATRY (I repeat, it has nothing to do with
commercial or not) you should pay to MySQL.

The MySQL license look to me pretty simple, although I am not a lawyer.

Disclaimer: Do not use this as a legal advise...

If you read the MySQL licensing carefully, you'll see that the dual
licensing of MySQL is not valid if you distribute it with commercial
applications, even if you don't touch the original code.Look at this page:

http://www.mysql.com/company/legal/licensing/index.html
Commercial distributions are not allowed to use the GPL licensing for
MySQL as far as I can tell.

No, this is a reason to write Free Software :-)

You should use the product which is best for your application.
Since I am not an expert in Databases, I prefer not to comment about using
either of these products.

I do think that using open source is better for both the customer and the
vendor, but this is a whole different issue, that I would not like to enter
now. (I have work to do, Writing commercial free software of course...)

Why don't you read the *whole* sentence you pointed to:
"For OEMs, ISVs, and VARs who distribute MySQL with their products, and
do not license and distribute their source code under the GPL, MySQL
provides a flexible OEM Commercial License."

OK, I'll put it in bold so you can see it:
"...AND DO NOT LICENSE AND DISTRIBUTE THEIR SOURCE CODE UNDER THE
GPL..."

So this applies only to those who *do not* distribute according to GPL.

GPL and any free software and open source license *allows* for any
use (including commercial use). If in doubt read the free software
definition and the open source definition respectively.

Now for the 1000'th time: proprietary != commercial.

Not exactly,  I think proprietary == commercial;
and GPL != !commercial.

proprietary software is commercial and GPL can be also commercial.

I'm not arguing about use of GPL or any other FOSS license. All I said was
- MySQL restricts who can use their product under GPL license (unlike most
other GPL software).

No, they do not restrict anything if your license is GPL (or even other
FLOSS license) they do restrict, if your license is Non free!

This law isn't stopping anyone who already legally has the right to look
at porn from looking at porn. It just requires them to prove that they have
the right. I don't see requiring to identify yourself before watching porn
as any different from requiring a license for driving.
This isn't about censoring the internet. This is about censoring the
internet from children. I don't know any child that can't live without a

As I've said in other parts of this thread I think this law has a major
advantage in that it will block access from anywhere- People can attempt to
protect their home networks only to fail at the local internet cafe or
though the neightbor's wireless connection, or on a cellphone. This law
ensures (hopefully) that every access to adult content will be made by
adults. If a parent really want's they're kids looking at porn sites,
they'll give them their password.

No, and IMHO there never will be. The cost of certification is too high
for a FOSS project. You might be able to get the Chief Scientist's
Office to fund it, but no company or private group will do it.

Who said a FOSS project should be free of charge?

It's an ongoing process. Tax laws change often and the program needs

to be changed and re-certified.

No tax laws do change but the basic accounting rules are valid from about
200 years ago.

On the other hand, there is a misunderstanding about accounting software.

You can run your business without a certified bookkeeper or a certified
accounting software, you can even do it yourself on file cards.

No, You can't, you have to do final report each years to the tax authorities
and that must either be done by a certified accountant or by a certified
software.

A free accounting software already exists: http://drorit.sf.net.
However it is not free as in free beer, there are costs...

I am currently working on getting tax authorities certification.

However the information you collect can not be used for filing tax returns.

It must be entered into a certified program by a certified bookkeeper or
accountant. Small businesses can provide the data to their accountant and
they will enter the data into a program and produce the reports you need.

The disadvantage is cost. If you can buy a computer and an approved
program,
and hire a certified bookkeeper for X NIS, then your accountant will
charge you
two to three times X for the same function. If you only need a person for
1/2 or 1/4 time or less, then it's cheaper to pay your accountant.

It also provides an extra layer of accountability, so companies that want
to do "creative accounting" avoid having an outside accountant look
at their books.

Discuss it with your accountant. They probably use Excel, so any FOSS
program
that can output in CSV (comma separated variable) files would do.

Geoff.

I am not making sure the copies are unmodified, otherwise it is not free
software.
I will give warranty only for an original copy.

If you compile your own copy of the program, which is the usual way

of preventing such "hacks", it would not be the program that
was tested and IMHO there would be no way to prove it without testing
it again.

You are right, that is why I will give warranty only for an unmodified copy.

How would the tax agency ascertain that the program that produced a

report was in fact the certified version of the program and not a
version modified in any way?

They actually don't care, when they see the report is according to the laws
they do not check the software you used.
If there is any reason to check they will start asking questions also about
the software.

Using computer programs to steal money or hide income from the tax

authorities is not a new or uniquely Israeli concept.

AFAIK there have only been three programs approved.

Approved for what?
If you are talking about accounting software in Israel, there are more then
10 I know of that where approved.
However those are for DOS or Windows only.

libipq.

The options we are thinking about:

1. Clean-room implementation - one programmer reads the code and describes
it in a document which is then passed to another programmer to implement.
Possibly the best solution but we suspect it'll take most effort too.

2. Wrap the libipq calls with a separate GPL program which will talk to
the proprietary code over pipes. It will slow things down and seems to take
the least effort, but most importantly we are not sure whether this is
allowed by the GPL.

3. Try to understand the netfilter kernel interface that libipq talks to
and write our own cut-down interface functions which do just what we need
and nothing more. For this I wonder whether it would be OK to learn the
interface by looking at the libipq code (I suspect not). It looks like
reading the kernel side of the API IS allowed under the Linux license (and
besides, our code doesn't "link" with the kernel).

Releasing the program which links with libipq will be cost us a major
market advantage, so it's a very unattractive option.

So what would you do in our place?

Thanks,

The solution should have been to release the software under GPL, that is the
whole purpose of the GPL.
I hate those who try finding solutions to keep software not free.

I completely understand your opinion and felt very uncomfortable having to
ask such a question. But alas - it was thrust on me as "something we just
discovered and you have to re-implement a replacement for this GPL code
which taints the software we sold to our first customer".

See - the company discovered long time ago that the programmer who wrote
this used code which turned out to be GPL. (libraries are usually under LGPL
so that programmer fell into this trap). They asked the programmer to find a
workaround before his contract ends but he never bothered to do so and now
they found that this library still taints their code.

Ori,

This is your prerogative. I would like to point out that Amos is
clearly not trying to bypass GPL and is in fact acting responsibly
trying to resolve the issue as soon as it was discovered. They are
trying to maintain what they perceive as commercial advantage by
perfectly legal means, as far as I can judge.

If you are a current client of his company, and if you got their
proprietary software that links to libipq, I suppose you can demand
that they release their code to you under a GPL-compatible license
(Shlomi is right), sue for it, etc. If you are a shareholder, then you
may have an issue with the company not exercising due diligence and
catching the problem earlier.

Amos,

I personally appreciate that you (and I hope the decision-makers in
your company) are feeling uncomfortable. I don't think you should feel
like criminals because you want to keep your code legally
proprietary. I think you have asked the right question and that should
not make you feel uncomfortable. You real problem is lack of due
diligence in the past. (Well, if a customer sues you to release the
code then it will be a real problem, too.)

I think you need to a) fix the problem as quickly as possible, and b)
apply due diligence in the future.

This reason or another, I'm just saying that it doesn't work *here* as a

An Israeli example for a GPL-related-software-company that I know is Zend

Zend produces proprietary software such as various PHP-helper-tools - as

Does BEZEQ (the phone company, not the ISP) still have their 10 NIS a

such as a Linksys WRTG54-L and Tomato.

Re: [SUMMARY] Current status of Israeli ISPs

I guess that what bothers is the Linux support from the ISP.
It would be easier to take the guides we have today, update them and
redistribute it.
Or a better way, to establish a group of people that will get paid for

If by "ISP" you mean something like the big ISPs in Israel (Netvision,
012,
etc.), with hundreds of thousands of clients and hundreds of employees,
then
you'll need major investments and a lot management overhead, so this will
be
very hard (but not impossible) to pull off.

Instead of thinking big, why not think small?

If what bothers you is the home connection side of the ISP business, then
how about getting a few neighbors together, buying one connection, and
splitting it together (doing the technical work yourself, without favors
from the ISP)?

If what bothers you is the hosting side of the ISP business, why don't you
get together with several other people, buy one machine (or several
machines)
and host it in an existing ISP, and manage the machine together (again,
without needing help from the ISP)?

Do not fear, although we are going to sell it, it is GPL and will stay GPL,
which means most of the money will be made from supporting and customizing

Re: GNU license question (was: Application L10n)

I am not sure but I think the gettext library is LGPL, only the tools are
GPL.

If it is GPL, I am happy, this shows the greatness of GPL, it forces free
software.

Keep in mind that GPL application does not mean free (as in free beer)
application. GPL application can be commercial.

Re: FLOSS Services Directory

Most of us have sites and systems on shared hosting even without shell
access so I assume you can manage without root.
I support that you will have root privileges but we have been in this
discussion in the past, unfortunately the current admin will not give root
to anyone.
I don't think we need many domains, we can put all services under
hamakor.org.il There is no need I think for many domains.
Let's ask all the list here what do you think. Do we still need iglu domain?

Re: gcc thoughts

2008-01-15 Thread Ori Idan
gcc as a compiler always work on a single file.

For a cross reference, you need something that knows all the files, this
is done by ld and it does create a cross reference, this is the map file.

However, during development, I still can not link (some files and
functions are broken) therefore I need different tool for the cross
reference.

Map file is not created by gcc, it is created by ld that is called by
gcc after all files are compiled to object files.
So it has nothing to do with the assembler.

Re: Checking from a kernel module the existence of a device file - is it possible ?

2008-02-19 Thread Ori Idan
It is impossible.
When the kernel loads it first loads built in modules, then mounts file
system later on init insert other modules.
What you want is a module that can only be inserted by init or manually by
modprob or insmod.
In modern systems however, the device files are generated using udevd so you
don't need to check for device file.

Re: "all-in-one" ink printer : looking for recommendations

2008-03-12 Thread Ori Idan
I am working with HP psc2210 I am not sure if they manufacture it now but I
am sure there are other models in the psc series.
As much as I know all these models are supported under Linux.
It has a fax/scanner The scanner works great using SANE.
There should be a way to send a fax directly but I did not find it.
The printer also contains card reader that works great under Linux.

Re: Gnucash annual reports for Israel

2008-04-06 Thread Ori Idan
In order to submit reports you must use a software authorized by the Israeli
Tax authorities.
GNUCash is not authorized as much as I know therefore no CPA will get
reports from it.

Sorry for the self advertising, however the only open source software I know
that has Tax authorities is drorit (http://drorit.helicontech.co.il)

You do not need a certified level 3 bookkeeper. I have done it myself for
years, two years ago I handed it to my CPA since I did not have a software
to do it.
Since December 2007, Drorit is certified and thus I can use it.
You can use a piece of paper but also on pieces of paper there are some laws
you need to obey.
You can submit reports either on paper or from a ceritified software.
Today, a certified software must be able to output files in a predefined
format (open format, defined by tax authorities).
Therefore GNUCash will not be accepted as it can not output these files.

Is open source more secure? [was Re: Moving to Linux]

2005-05-13 Thread Ori Idan
I think this is an academic debate if GNU/Linux is more secured or not.

For the simple people, let us look at the facts:

1. When was the last time any of this list members has seen a virus in
his GNU/Linux desktop? (I guess the answer is never)

2. When was the last time you had a spyware in your desktop? (again the
answer is never)

So the end result is: GNU/LINUX IS MORE SECURED.

There is a question wether in the future there will be viruses or
spywares, this is a real question (my opinion is no, there won't be). We
don't know the future of Micro$oft OS either, will Longhorn be more secured?

So for the time being Open source desktop is far more secured then XP
desktop.

Lilo boots slow...

I installed debian on an IBM thinkpad with LILO as it's boot loader,

Is there a way to shorten the time it draws these dots?

I have just installed this router few days ago, it worked good with most
applications I tried GAIM and it would not connect, I googled about it
and found about the ipv6.

When disabled it in my /etc/modules.conf (debian unstable) everything
worked fine.

This router now works for me for 3 days without any interruptions,
connection is good, serving 3 computers with DHCP and NAT, I had one
power failure and everything got back to normal without any intervention.

It still does not mean this is a good router, however it seems to work fine.

Well, it is a nice little linux box...

Seemed that I solved the problem.
The problem was that /dev/null and /dev/urandom did not have premissions
for read from other users.
Now another small problem, when GNOME starts it says: No volume control
elements and/ori devices found.

Most problems solved, the only problem remaining is that when I login to
gnome I get error:
No volume control elements and/or devices found.

I checked that my user is also in audio group and it does.
I checked premissions on /dev/dsp and still the problem remains

No, it is not approved yet.
Which means you can not send a report generated by this software to the
IRS, however if you use this software only for invoices and internal
accounting and the yearly report is done by a CPA than it is Ok.
I am using this software for my invoices.

Problems while logging in to Debian unstable

2006-02-03 Thread Ori Idan
I have tried to logged in to my Debian unstable machine using regular
user from gdm and got

a message "System bootup in progress" after clicking Ok I returned to
the login screen.

I tried logging in without X (Ctrl-Alt-F1) when logging in as root, got
the same message and password prompt and logged in Ok.

Trying to log in using regular user I got the same error and then
returned to the login: prompt.

Does anyone have any idea what may cause this probelm?

Thank you, this has solved the problem.

I wonder how the file /etc/nologin was created as I dont remember
creating it myself.

Maybe it was a script activated while upgrading the system.

Symbolic links at tar file

2006-02-18 Thread Ori Idan
I have a source tree which some of the files are actually symbolic links
to other files in the same tree.

I compress the tree using tar cjf file.tar.bz2 dir

When I extract the files to the same machine everything works fine.

When I extract the files to another machine with same directory
strucuture (the directories before the source tree) everything works
fine but extracting it on another machine with different path it seems
the symbolic links are not created.

For example:

On my machine the source tree is at: /home/ori/stree

On the other machine the source tree is at /home/user1/stree

If on the other machine I would extract it to /home/ori, everything
works fine.

It seems as if tar works with absolute path names for the symbolic links.

Anyone knows how to tell it to work with relational names?
