Re: [Mac-access]: Pages and table of contents
Hello Sarah, MoveMouse works just fine in Yosemite. You have to copy the MoveMouse Unix Executable File to the clipboard and then press Cmd-Shift-a and paste it there. You then have to go to Library and open Services. That’s where you paste the four work flows. You then open System Preferences and go to the Keyboard tab. You’ll find the four MoveMouse functions under Services. Give each one a shortcut and you’re good to go. Cheers, Anne On 30 Nov 2014, at 01:17, Sarah k Alawami marri...@gmail.com wrote: I think we've got an issue. [Mac-access]: Pages and table of contents
Hello all, Another retrograde step in the new Pages. Under Mavericks, the table of contents formatter allowed a VoiceOver user to check or uncheck any elements in the table of contents. Since Yosemite and the latest Pages, those checkboxes are inaccessible with VO. However, there is a workaround. That handy little utility MoveMouse allows you to find these checkboxes so that they can be checked or unchecked using the mouse or trackpad. The one to the left of the element name is quite close, so only a couple of moves left are necessary. The one to the right requires around ten moves right. Hello Phil, Here’s the link to get MoveMouse: http://www.podfeet.com/blog/2014/10/movemouse/ http://www.podfeet.com/blog/2014/10/movemouse/ Read the installation notes carefully and it should all work fine. I set the shortcuts Cmd-Ctrl-Shift-Arrow key according to the direction of movement. MoveMouse doesn’t work in popovers unfortunately. You still need to use Mousekeys there, or the trackpad if you have a steady hand. I prefer to use the trackpad as it avoids having to remember to turn Mousekeys off again. Re: [Mac-access]: Creating a rsume in pages?
Hello Matthew, The text that is not in English is placeholder text in a form of Latin. Never navigate using Quick Nav in Pages as things will not behave correctly. You should interact with the document and navigate using the arrow keys. You should then find that the placeholder text is highlighted and will disappear as soon as you start typing. The placeholder text provides the correct text attributes for that section of your document and these will be retained when you replace it. If you read the text carefully, you should be able to determine what kind of text should replace it. So, you should recognise where your name should go, where your address should go, and so on. Re: [Mac-access]: Creating a rsume in pages?
Hello Matthew, In Pages, always make sure that Quick Nav is off. Interact with the various text areas and navigate just with the arrow keys. The placeholder text should be automatically highlighted as you navigate to it and will disappear as soon as you start typing. If ever you hear a wooshing sound and VoiceOver announces that you’ve moved something, do the opposite of what you did, move left if you move right, etc. Then, press Return followed by Cmd-z. This isn’t a VoiceOver bug, it’s a general one, but a nuisance nonetheless. Cheers, Anne On 28 Nov 2014, at 17:01, matthew dyer ilovecountrymusic...@outlook.com wrote: Hi, Are you saying I should interact with it and use down arrow or should I just turn off quick nav and naviggate that way? [Mac-access]: Insertion point problem revisited
Hello all, I’ve had a look at the insertion point problem again and have discovered that what is being reported when pressing VO-F4-F4 is the actual position of the insertion point on the computer screen, not the position of the insertion point as it would appear on the printed page. As far as I can see, this is useless to us, but by adjusting the zoom, I’ve been able to get it closer to what we need. To calibrate the insertion point, find out the position of the first tab stop on a line, then use Cmd- or Cmd- until VO-F4-F4 gives approximately the correct distance from the left-hand margin. It isn’t perfect, but it’s better than what we have by default. Here’s the link to it: http://www.podfeet.com/blog/2014/10/movemouse/ http://www.podfeet.com/blog/2014/10/movemouse/ This avoids the need to turn on Mouse keys. It doesn’t work in pop overs but it does work for renaming tables. I set the short cuts Cmd-Ctrl-Shift-arrow key which I think is what the developer recommends. Anyway, to rename a table, you still have to bring the mouse to cell A1, but then you just press the up arrow short cut once and you’re in the right place. You then have to triple click with the trackpad or mouse, VO-Shift-Space 3 times didn’t work for me. Anyway, Move Mouse is free and I’ve been finding it quite handy. Hello Andy, Option-e gives an accute accent as a dead key, so you can type any appropriate lettre afterwards and the accute accent will be applied to it. This is true of all the other accents I gave you. This is what I do for French, but sometimes, I just can’t be bothered to switch my brain over to thinking in the azerty layout which is why I’m so familiar with all those accents on a British keyboard. On a Mac, it is a bad idea to put lots of icons on the desktop as they all get loaded into memory when the computer is booted and can therefore slow down the machine. The Dock contains aliases to applications which are in fact in the Applications folder. It can also contain pointers to folders stored anywhere on the Mac. Re: [Mac-access]: Sorting finder with folders on top on mac?
It’s best to use the Dock for aliases. Personally, I don’t bother with them as it’s so easy to locate any files or folders I want by using the first letter or two of the name. I’m really pretty organised when it comes to storing files. Also, don’t forget that it’s easy to reorganise the Dock so that your items are in alphabetical order. Just use Cmd-Option-Right or Left Arrow and you’ll hear where you’re putting the item you’re moving. Cheers, Anne On 4 Nov 2014, at 11:35, Eleanor Martha Burke eleanormarthabu...@gmail.com wrote: Final question here then, would I be wrong to make Aliases on the desktop? is it best to put them on the dock or just leave in the documents folder? --- Mac Access At Mac Access Dot Net --- To reply to this post, please address your message to mac-access@mac-access.net You can find an archive of all messages postedto the Mac-Access forum at the list's public Mail Archive: http://www.mail-archive.com/mac-access@mac-access.net/. Re: [Mac-access]: a quick pages question
If you’re using Yosemite and the latest Pages, VO misreports a section break as a page break. There is no short cut for section break so you have to do it from the Insert menu. Also, Enter is not Return. The short cut for page break is Cmd-Enter which is Cmd-FN-Return on a laptop keyboard. When I tested this problem I was able to insert a section break at the desired location, so I don’t know what’s happening for you. Re: [Mac-access]: a quick pages question
OK, you’re inserting a section and not a section break. By default, that means adding a section at the end of the document. If you insert a section break instead, you can then redefine the part of the document that comes after the section break. I think you must have created that short cut yourself at some time, as it isn’t in my version of Pages. Also, when creating a template, I always save it first to a folder in my Documents folder so that I can put it on another computer or share it with someone else. Of course, I have to add it to my templates before I can use it, but at least that way it isn’t hidden from me. Pages 5.5: access to paragraph styles menus lost again
Hello everyone, I’ve installed Yosemite as I heard good things about it, and I got the iWork updates. Unfortunately, in Pages, the menu buttons to the right of the Paragraph styles is no longer accessible using VoiceOver. We now have to use the mouse or Mouse keys to get to it and click it. Fortunately, no counting is required as the word “Menu” is spoken if you have “Speak item under mouse” set with a delay of zero. I’ve reported this regression to Apple. I’ve also reported the fact that the VO-F4-F4 problem hasn’t been fixed yet. What’s more, they’ve taken the command out of the commands menus, but VO-k still recognises it and it still reports its fictitious coordinates. Re: Another question about pages
Hello Marcos, To adjust line spacing, go to the Formatter and select Style. You’ll find what you need in the scroll area. As for adding a page number, decide where you want your page number to be then interact with that area. I tried with the right-hand side of the header. Once in the right place, go to the Insert menu and choose Page number. After this, the page numbers will be inserted automatically in the same place. Hello Andy, You should repair permissions after installing new software and after updates. People who only use their Macs for simple tasks can get away with not repairing permissions, but as soon as you start using more complex programs such as Numbers, you’re going to encounter anomalous behaviour just as you have already done. Re: How can I stop streadsheets opening in Numbers at the top cell all the time?
Hello Eleanor, To repair permissions: • Open your Utilities folder (Cmd-Shift-u); • Type dis to get quickly to Disk Utility and open it (Cmd-o); • Interact with the table and navigate down to your hard drive (probably the second item in the list); • Stop interacting and navigate twice to the right to make sure that First Aid is selected; • Navigate straight down as far as Repair disk permissions and press VO-Space: • You can follow progress by navigating up to the Results table and interacting with it; • When the repair is complete, it will say “Permissions repair complete” at the bottom of the Results table; • Quit Disk utility. There will always be a few things to repair. I usually find about 7 lines in the table, but I’ve seen computers with thousands of lines of repairs! Re: how do i go about removing mail preview pane using mavrics?
Hello Michael, Things have changed in Mavericks. You must turn Trackpad commander off. Navigate to the horizontal splitter with VO; Bring the mouse; Press down on the trackpad with one finger while stroking downwards with another finger. Sometimes, it takes several attempts to get this right and some people find it impossible to do. You used to be able to double-click with the trackpad or mouse, but since Mavericks, this no longer works. Neither does interacting with the horizontal splitter and dragging it down that way. VO just goes busy and you can’t complete the operation. Re: How do I type letters with accents over them?
Hello Andy, Your keyboard is already British English. The Mac keyboard is different from a PC keyboard so the @ sign is where it should be, over the 2. Just use VO-k to find where all the keys are. If you’re typing in another language, you can add the keyboard layout for that language in System preferences and switch to it when you need it. I have both British English and French configured on my MacBook Air and use Cmd-Space to toggle between the two. However, if you’re typing Spanish, the tilde dead key is Option-n so for ñ you do Option-n followed by n. The acute dead key is Option-e. ¡ is Option-1. ¿ is Option-Shift-Slash. Hello Eleanor, In VoiceOver Utility, go down to the second from last category which is Braille. Select Layout. You’ll find several check boxes such as Use 8-dot Braille, and others. Re: Focus Blu now Connecting Via Bluetooth
Hello Eleanor, All the commands that are programmed into your Braille display show up in a table when you click the Assign Commands… button in the VoiceOver Utility, category Braille, Displays tab. You can add VoiceOver commands if you find that you need to. To find the table, just press VO-Down Arrow after clicking the Add button. The Status cells give all kinds of information. Each dot has a function, and if you enable the Status cells, you can read about them when you press the router button above the cell. Dots 7 and 8 in the first cell show the direction in which panning can go on the current line. So, if both 7 and 8 are shown, you are somewhere in the middle of a line. If only dot 8 is shown, you’re at the beginning of the line so you can only move right. Status cell 2 shows such things as bold, italic, underscore, etc. I can’t remember what cell 3 does, but if you enable it, you can press the router button above it and read what it says. I have a Focus 14 Blue, so I’m disinclined to use up 3 cells. I don’t normally use my Focus 14 with my Mac, I got it for my iPhone, mostly for reading books. I use a Braillino with my Mac. Pasting signature into letter in Pages
Hello everyone, I think we’ve finally cracked this problem. You can’t find out exactly where your signature is on the page, but you can know where it is relative to the body of the letter and your name. To insert a scanned signature file, copy the appropriate image file to the clipboard and paste it in a couple of lines above your name. Press VO-j to jump to the Formatter. Click on Arrange. Interact with the Arrange formatter scroll area and navigate to Text wrap which should be set to “Inline with text”. Then go down to Size and set the Width field to 4 cm, unless you have a very large signature! You can check that it is in the right place by using the arrow keys. There should be the same number of blank lines before and after the signature. If you use inches, set the width to 1.5. Re: Tesco on the Mac - Verified by Visa
Hello David, Although Tesco isn’t of interest to me as I live in France, I know of other sites where the contents of the page change without me hearing the page loaded sound. What I usually do on pages that puzzle me is use the Web Rotor to investigate the form controls. I find the Web Rotor to be extremely useful for many things. I’ve never used Windows so can’t make comparisons. Cheers, Anne On 26 May 2014, at 19:29, David Griffith d.griff...@btinternet.com wrote: A few weeks ago on this list I reported a problem with using Verified by Visa. This problem was also shared by other members of this list. I then reported to Apple Accessibility a specific problem with Verified by Visa on the Tesco Grocery Shopping site. This problem stopped the completion of a Checkout. Yesterday on another list Chris Hallsworth suggested to me that I might try disabling JavaScript in Safari , advice which I followed. I am not sure which, if either, of these steps , contacting apple Accessibility or disabling Javascript, have provoked the necessary change but I was able to complete a checkout on the Tesco site with the Mac today. The behaviour and interaction is very different to what the experience is on Windows. Clearly this is a Mac list but as many, like me, would have been forced to switch to Windows to complete a checkout under the old setup I thought it would be helpful to set out the difference in the Mac Experience from Windows. so I thought I would outline what I had to do. 1. Having completed the Tesco part of the checkout you will be taken to a page where there is a verified by Visa Frame. 2. The contents of this frame will not be visible unless you interact with it. 3. Having interacted with it however the crucial part is that now Voiceover does , without any problem, now read the password request, saying something like enter the 1st 6th and 7th characters of your password. Although I could find no way of navigating to the required edit boxes using normal Voiceover navigation I did get there by pressing the tab key. However, Unlike on Windows browsers, you will not jump to the next edit box after entering the character of the password. You will have to press the tab key every time you want to enter the next character. I have my tab key on the Mac set up to automatically interact so that may have assisted me. 4. Then,, after entering the last character of the password, I pressed enter. This proved to be a mistake. Basically after getting a bit lost I went back to the top of the web page and investigated down again. When I re-interacted with the Verified by Visa Frame I found this time a send data button which I hit. So presumably you do not press enter after entering the last character of the password but continue tabbing to the send data button. 5. I was again misled by my Windows Experience by expecting then to be taken straight back to a Tesco Confirmation page. Again I investigated the page and nothing appeared to have happened. However I found the Verified by Visa Frame yet one more time and this time I found a payment authorised message with a Continue to Confirmation button . I press this button and it return me to the Tesco Checkout confirmation page. Steps 4 and 5 are automated using IE and Firefox on Windows so it is slightly confusing unless you know that these extra steps are necessary in Safari on the Mac. So the good news is that it is now definitely accessible though I am slightly confused as to why the process is more convoluted than with Window Browsers. Ironically it may well be the fact that I have disabled JavaScript which is requiring me to take these extra steps. Re: Not able to disable the preview pane on a new iMac
Hello Frank, In Mavericks, double-clicking on the splitter no longer works. You have to hold down the physical mouse and drag the splitter to the bottom if it’s a horizontal splitter, or to the far right if it’s a vertical splitter. If you’re in Classic view, it will be the horizontal splitter which has to be dragged to the bottom. I tried interacting with the splitter to move it to the bottom, but it would get stuck part way down and Mail would become busy and no longer respond, so the only solution seems to be to drag it with the mouse or trackpad. Hello Henry, I’m not sure what you mean by the keystrokes for System Preferences. You get to System Preferences by going to the Apple menu (VO-m) then going down to System Preferences and pressing Return. Once in System Preferences, interact with the scroll area and you’ll find lots of buttons. When you press VO-Space on a button, it opens a pane where you can make adjustments. Diabetes UK says the rise is largely fuelled by type 2 diabetes, linked to obesity and unhealthy lifestyles. The survey combined GP data from England^Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales to calculate the overall figure of how many people in the UK are diagnosed with diabetes. Type 1 diabetes accounts for about a tenth of cases and occurs when the insulin-producing cells in the body have been destroyed. Type 2 diabetes develops when the insutin-producing cells in the body are unable to produce enough insulin, or when the insulin that is produced does not work properly. Insulin enables the body to use sugar as energy and store any excess in the liver and muscle. If this fails, blood sugar rises and this can cause long-term complications, such as kidney damage. The NHS spends 10% of its budget on diabetes and 80% of this goes on treating consequences such as amputation, kidney failure, heart disease and stroke. Re: Giraffe Reader
Hello Sarah, Esther has described the Giraffe Reader very well. It is extremely light and measures 26 cm by 21 cm or about 10.5 in by 8.5 in. It isn’t as stable as the StandScan Pro but is even more portable. I can see myself using it in restaurants to read the menu, which would be rather difficult with the StandScan Pro. I now have both products and can see uses for both of them. One thing about the Giraffe Reader is that it was designed for blind users and therefore qualifies for free shipping. It takes longer to arrive (mine took 6 days from across the channel) but it means that you don’t have to add anything to the basic price. I’d recommend using the Giraffe Reader with Prizmo as you can take your hands away before the picture is taken, thereby avoiding the risk of shaking the iPhone. However, it works for me whether I use Prizmo or TextGrabber. Cheers, Anne On 13 Mar 2014, at 19:25, Sarah k Alawami marri...@gmail.com wrote: I'm a bit behind the times here. Re: foot notes and the pages app
Hello Sarah, You can’t have both footnotes and endnotes in the same document. However, you can convert footnotes to endnotes. To do this, you need to create a footnote, interact with it, then jump to the Formatter and select the Footnotes radio button. You can have endnotes for each section or for the whole document. Footnotes show up on the page containing the link to them, whereas endnotes are either at the end of the section or at the end of the document. If he wants both then I'll do both. lol! or if I need both I'll do both. depending if I need to insert a long note about what ever in to the paper.. Take care and thanks again. Re: Shortcut key for page up
Hello Margaret, The VO command for Page up or Page down is VO-FN-Up arrow or down arrow. You must be interacting with the text for this to work and you need to have TextEdit set to Wrap to page. Unfortunately, with Wrap to page set, the normal arrow keys without the VO keys no longer work after the first page of a document. You can still navigate using the VO keys and all the VO navigation commands which you can find by pressing VO-h-h and looking in the Navigation and Text menus. Re: Shortcut key for page up
Hello Chris, You can set TextEdit to Wrap to window and all the normal arrow keys work, or you can use the VO keys, so VO-Down Arrow will read the next line, or you can use Quick Nav and set it to Line. With Wrap to page set, the VO commands for next sentence, next Paragraph, and so on work just fine. Selecting text requires you to use the VO command VO-Return at the beginning of the selection and the same command at the end. Changing between Wrap to page and Wrap to window is quick anyway, it’s just Cmd-Shift-w. Re: Shortcut key for page up
Hello Chris, With Wrap to Page set, the text is displayed one page at a time with a fixed width and height. You can look in TextEdit preferences to see how many characters wide a page is, and how many lines long. If you press Cmd-Shift-p, you can see which paper size is being used. Wrap to window allows the displayed text to be as wide as the window and the text scrolls down as you go through it. This is probably why Page down and page up don’t work when wrap to window is set. Cheers, Anne On 15 Feb 2014, at 21:16, Christopher gilland ch...@clgproductions.com wrote: OK, I thought wrap to window was basically the same as saying wrap to page. Re: language roter on the mac
Hello Laurel, The VO-Cmd-Arrow keys commands stay on the attribute last used. So for me, changing languages is just as quick as on the iPhone since I just have to do VO-Cmd-Down Arrow to change the language. Out of curiosity, I tried creating a track pad gesture to Decrease speech attribute value, but this only works to toggle between two voices so wouldn’t be of use to you. However, if you like to change other attributes at the same time, you could create an activity for each language you use.
