That would be me. To do this:
• When you open the Mail app, you should be in the Messages table.
• Interact with that table. You should then be on a message in that table
• Now, interact with that message. If you aren’t on one, Voiceover + Right 
arrow until you are.
• Now, you should hear “unread” or from whom the message is sent. Right arrow 
until you hear the subject spoken; it is passed the time it was sent.
• Now, you can just use Down Arrow to navigate between messages, Delete to 
delete them, (delete is where backspace is on other computers,) or Return to 
open it.
• Note also that you can navigate by sender, or even receive time if you want. 
I navigate by sender in the “Junk” folder, for example.

  You heard from John already. I recommend you visit his web site at 
macfortheblind.com and look at his audio tutorials. Many are cost-based, but 
there are about a half dozen basic tutorials that are free, and are very well 
done. I learned a lot from John’s tutorials, and also from those done by David 
Woodbridge on appleviz.com (did I spell that one right?).

  I did a lot of listening and struggling in my first 3 or 4 months using 
the Mac, but am becoming more comfortable with the Sox approach.

  I made it a point to become familiar first with the Mail and Textedit 
apps, and then spent a whole lot of time learning how to get around in Finder. 
Calendar and Contacts were a bit more difficult to use, and I’m still not 
comfortable with Contacts.

  Other places you should spend time poking around would be in the 
Voiceover Utility and System Preferences.

  And of course post your questions to this list. There are some real 
experts on board.

Marie, don’t forget to plow through the getting started guide. You can find it 
by pressing the help menu keys VO plus h. The getting started guide is down at 
the bottom of the list. You might find some trouble in browsing at first, but 
try to bring up the table of contents and you’ll find a wealth of information 
about using voiceover on the Mac. Also check out the other items in the 
voiceover help menu while you’re at it. I think you’ll find all you need there 
along with questions on list you should learn quite quickly.

No, I have not forgotten and it would be hard since most podcasts for 
beginners, encourages new user to go through it at least once. I started it 
this afternoon and had to interrupt it for now but will probably continue 
tomorrow. So far, some of the tutorials and podcasts actually do a better job 
of explaining some things than the quick start. But I definitely will finish it.

I am another new member, but I am a little more experienced than Marie. I 
joined this group because I have a job with my church editing documents. We are 
using Pages and I don’t know a whole lot about pages. We are not using the 
templates, thank heaven. We are just using it the way one would use text edit

looks like a very good group and I know a few of you from other lists 
I already know that the Mac is a much better computer than PCs  using windows.

Yes, Pages, for the most part should work fine.  Sometimes, with more 
complicated formatting, things may not look exactly the same after conversion,

It is important for me to collaborate with fellow acaddemics. So accessing

Can you use Safari browser on your new mac?  If you can, there are lots of good 
web pages and websites that will help you learn.  There's Apple's own 
accessibility section.  I'm pasting below a link to VoiceOver on the mac 
section of Apple's website.  If you click on it by first interacting with the

on the link, safari will open and you will find yourself on the relevant page.

Hello there welcome to the world of the mac. First you probably would want to 
go through the voiceover  quick start to do that press control option command 
function f 8 to open it then use you're left and right arrows to move forward 
and back through the quick start guide. The quick start will get you started 
with how to use voiceover such as using it to interact with tables and other 
basic voiceover commands you will need to use the mac.

Hello Zoe,

To get rid of the conflict between new keyboard layout and Spotlight search, 
open System Preferences and go to the Keyboard pane. Select Shortcuts tab, 3 of 
4, then navigate right to the Shortcuts categories table and interact with it. 
Navigate down to Spotlight. Stop interacting with that table and navigate right 
to the next one which will say Spotlight shortcuts table. Interact and uncheck 
the check box for Show Spotlight search field ⌘Space.

Be aware that VO F8 twice will bring you to the list of VoiceOver keyboard
commands. The commands are grouped in such a way that you can easily locate
what you need when you need it. There are a potentially overwhelming number
of VO commands to learn if you try to memorize them all at once, so you're
better off learning the ones you need as you complete your daily tasks on
the Mac.

Dear Zoe,

Welcome to the group. I, too, am a Greek speaker and I, too, chose to switch to 
Mac because of the many language Apple offers. I've learnt Greek, and in fact, 
I'm still continuing my classes with a tutor in Cyprus.

Now to your questions. Isaac has already told you how to switch languages on 
the fly. I hope that this is working well for you now.

The second point is more complex, and I will try to explain. My knowledge of 
this comes from the very many exchanges I've had over the years with the 
members of the group, so I owe it all to them.

The reason why you call up spotlight search is that the shortcut key 
combination command+spacebar is assigned to spotlight. You need to disassociate 
this combination with spotlight and than assign it or activate it for the input 
source. It's a while since I have done it, so forgive me if I make an error. 
Someone else on the list may correct me on this.

1. Open system preferences by going to the dock with control+f3. You should 
here voiceover say dock. Once in the dock, you can type three first letters 
sys to land immediately on system preferences. Press enter. System 
preferences will open. You will be probably in the toolbar of system 
preferences where you have back forward buttons and search field. Stop 
interacting with the toolbar by pressing vo+shift+uparrow and vo + right arrow 
when you will here preferences pane. 

2. Interact with preference pain and vo+right arrow to find the button 
keyboard or else start typing the word keyboard and you should land on this 
button. Press vo+spacebar on this button to open keyboard preferences.

3. In keyboard preferences you will have several tabs. As you vo+right arrow 
through the window, you will hear the word tab and highlighted. The highlighted 
tab is th the one which is currently active. 

4. Find the tab which says shortcuts. Press vo+spacebar on it to highlighted. 
It will now read highlighted. Continue vo+right arrow to find two tables 
where you will need to make choices and perform actions. Remember to interact 
with a table you need to press vo+shift+down arrow and to stop interacting you 
press vo+shift+uparrow. Once you interact with the table you can vo+down or up 
arrow through the rows and vo+left or right arrow to examine each row.

5. Interact with the first table and find the category spotlight. Once you 
land on it, stop interacting with the table. The item spotlight will now be 
highlighted. Move vo+right to the next table of shortcuts. 

6. Interact with the second table and uncheck the boxes next to the spotlight 
actions. 

7. Stop interacting with the table and move back to the previous table of 
shortcut categories. Interact with it and find the category input source'. 
Stop interacting and move to the shortcuts table

8. Interact with shortcuts table and vo+down arrow until you find previous and 
next input source items. To the left of each item there's a checkbox. Check 
them and to the right of each item there should be a description of the 
shortcut key. 

This is the point where my memory fails me. I can't now remember whether I had 
assigned command+spacebar to the next input source myself or whether it was 
already assigned and I just needed to check the box next to the action item. I 
hope the latter is the case. Try this, and if it doesn't work, you will need to 
assign the shortcut combination. I hope it won't be necessary. 

I did however have to assign a new shortcut to Spotlight. This is maybe for 
later.

1.  VO should turn on when you first turn on your Mac.  IF, by some strange 
chance it does not, press Cmd+F5.  Know where your command key is?  It’s the 
one directly next to the space bar at either side.  Your Option key is the one 
directly next to the command key.  How to ensure Voice Over stays on?  Just 
don’t turn it off.

How to get help?

IF you press VO+k, this turns on Keyboard help.  Press escape to turn it off.  
What I mean by VO is the key combination of control+Option together.  So, if 
for example, I tell you to press VO+up arrow, I mean for you to press 
control+Option+up arrow all together.

Here’s another tip.  You will be offered the option of starting an interactive 
tutorial when Voice OVer starts up for the first time.  go ahead and let this 
happen.  In this mode, you will be activly guided through the basics.

With respect to the broadcast program, I’d get the basics down first.  Give 
yourself a good two or three weeks for this.

To add what Ray has said. Once you’ve setup your Mac the way you like it. It 
maybe a good idea to check the checkbox found in system preferences, Users and 
Groups, now your in a table. Arrow down to Login options group and here is 
where you’ll find the check box which is called, “use Voiceover in the login 
window.” Note: if Voiceover says dimd afterwards then in this case you will 
need to keep arrowing right with the VO keys until you here “Click the lock to 
make changes.” Either a button or a check box choose which ever you want a 
screen will then pop up asking you to aufenticate in other words type in your 
password if you do decide to create one once you have setup your Mac.
After you’ve done this, that previous Voiceover check box should then be 
un-dimd so that you can now go ahead and check it.
If you forget all this, then no problem just email us again and I’m sure 
someone here will tell you how to do this again.

The reason why you would want to check this box is for example software 
updates. Say you was installing a software update for your Mac and it required 
you to re-start then by having this check box checked it will automatically 
turn on Voiceover if it re-starts and is installing the new files and the like 
for the new software update in progress. Of course, you could use the Command 
F5 command to turn on Voiceover but having this check box checked should 
hopefully make your life a lot easier.

Command-f5 will turn Voiceover on and off, and once it is on it will remain on 
until you turn it off, even after a restart. On a standard Apple keyboard, the 
command key is immediately to the left or right of the spacebar. You may need 
to press function with that keystroke, which is the bottom left key.

If you are interested in programming, Macs come with Python pre-installed, so 
you can use that language, or you can look into using Xcode to write 
Objective-c or C++ applications. The mv...@googlegroups.com email list is a 
good place to ask Xcode questions.

Keystrokes are all over the internet, but Apple has a couple lists on their 
website, as does www.applevis.com. The latter site also has many tutorials and 
pocasts for those new to the Mac you may find useful.

First, the mac is completely different from windows; some things work better, 
some things do not. You cannot come to the mac expecting it to be just like 
windows, or you will be disappointed and frustrated.

That said, you do not need to press the vo keys as often as certain podcasts 
lead you to believe. For instance, to activate a button, checkbox, or similar 
control in a dialog, you can press space, not vo-space. Pressing enter in a 
dialog will activate the default button (vo will tell you if a button is 
default when you move over it). Tab will work similar to windows, moving you 
around from control to control. If it does not, open system preferences, go to 
keyboard, and make sure tab navigation is turned on and set how you want it. In 
menus, you can simply arrow, no need to hold the vo keys down, much like in 
windows. Speaking of menus, you should go into the vo utility (vo-f8), select 
navigation in the table, and enable cursor wrapping so that vo will not stop at 
the end of a menu or dialog but instead loop around to the beginning. Finally, 
some vo commands have mac equivalents: ctrl-f3 goes to the doc, ctrl-f2 goes to 
the menu bar, and so on. Note that you may need to press function with any 
command that uses an f key, if you have a keyboard that has a function key and 
your mac is set up to require it (again, system preferences  keyboard is where 
you can change that).

True, if you have a Macbook with the right trackpad (anything made within the 
last three or four years will). If you have a desktop, you will need the Magic 
Trackpad ($70 from Apple). Some gestures are not the same, however, and the Mac 
includes many gestures that the iPhone does not. Have a look at the vo utility, 
commanders, trackpad, assign commands. In there you can see what all the 
default gestures do, and assign your own to be executed when you perform a 
gesture while holding down a modifier key like control or command.

I've not had much luck selecting text in Safari, but try using shift with up 
and down arrows. To select text in a document, just add shift to any navigation 
command. For instance, to select the next word, use shift-option-right; to 
select to the end of the document, use cmd-shift-down.

Hi Katie,

To select text in Text Edit, make sure quick Nav is off. Then interact with the 
text, and press vo+enter to start your selection. Use normal nnavigation 
commands to get the text you wish. Wehn finished with the selection, press 
vo+enter to end.
In Safari, try shift+down arrow to select lines, at least.

It can be done by hand but it is unnecessary.  According to this Apple article, 
the maintenance operations are done when the computer wakes from sleep or is 
turned back on.

I refresh Safari. I've run first aid under disk utility to see if there are 
errors. I've also gone to the processes to see if something is stuck running, 
like a print job. I've only been a Mac user for 18 months,so maybe I'm just not 
understanding her question?

Dear Karen,

I have not done this myself in all the years I have had a Mac except back in 
the 90's with Disk First Aid.  I did open disk Utility and  went to Disk 
Utility Help.  Under Disk Repair it tells  how to repair the disk.  If it is 
the  disk that is also being used as  the start up disk, the disk utility is a 
little limited.  Apparently , it is better to run Disk Utility  from the 
original Installation disks if they are available.

Hi,

There is no need to defrag a Mac.  The Mac does its own optimizing in the 
middle of the night, on the weekend and another one once a moth.  Just don't 
turn off the computer and it will do everything by itself.  It doesn't hurt to 
go into Disk Utility and do a Repair Disk Permissions once in a while.  It can 
improve performance if things have got out of whack, once a month is more then 
frequent enough.

With respect to Word Processors, Pages does work fine although there are some 
things that can be frustrating, but then again, one can get frustrated with 
Word on the PC as well.

To configure the function keys, open system preferences, and choose keyboard. 
Check the option to use the function keys for normal software functions, then 
they will work as expected.

Hi. I don't know about the DS50, but I have a DM520 and it works beautifully, 
at least using it as a standard drive. I don't know about the software that 
comes with it, I just use Finder, the program for navigating files, the Mac 
version of Windows Explorer.

Forget Omnipage on the Mac.  Nuence tells me it isn't accessible.  Iris is 
better, but, has a fifty page per session limit.  Abby Fine reader is by far 
better and has no page limit.

Hi Celena,

If you want to place things in higher priority in Utorrent, select the ones you 
want.
Press control option shift M to bring up the context  menu.
Arrow down to high priority and press enter.
You can use the same procedure to choose files not to download.
Utorrent doesn't put any value on the order of the files in the list the way 
other applications do, because of the nature of bit torrent.

Selecting items in order is really easy.  Just use shift down arrow starting at 
the top of the selection until you have everything you want selected.
selecting items that are non contiguous is a bit more of a process.  It would 
be interesting to see what result you get, because when interacting with the 
files table in UTorrent, I've noticed that VO doesn't track properly 

If you want the step by step for selecting noncontiguous files, let me know and 
I'll dig it out for you.

In order to save files press control option shift M to get a context menu.  The 
menu lets you save the linked files to your computer.
I am not sure about your question about radio stations.

Chad,

You can use iTunes to listen to internet radio. This is an option in the 
sources list of iTunes and once you are in the Songs table, you can use VO-\ 
to expand or collapse the list of offerings.

Chad,

Cannot help with the XM stuff, I don't know anything about that plugin. You 
should just be able to press enter on it and if there is something you need to 
click on, perhaps you can find out what that is and route the mouse pointer to 
it or use vo-shift-spacebar. As far as saving the mp3 files from Blind Cool 
Tech, you should be able to locate a download or Download as button, which 
should present a dialog in the case of download as. Finally, I have not used 
Logic Express and from what I have read here, is not accessible.

Would you be able to outline  exactly where this issue occurs? If I  
remember correctly, the default behavior of Voiceover is to speak  
every character that you type.

I used VO-V to set the verbosity preferences to what I believe is the  
default, and tried it out. Hitting command-N allows you to create a  
new card for a contact. You get feedback on entering names, however  
when it comes to entering information such as phone numbers, e-mail  
addresses you do not get any feedback, and I am not able to read what  
I have written without reentering the field. That only applies to some  
fields, though, oddly enough.

Another point, now that you mention audible feedback. Creating  
separate groups does not appear to work properly, either, for those  
using it. Audible or otherwise, according to the sighted people I have  
around.
