Take the cd-rw back to the deck and record again. I keep about ten cd-rw's
revolving this way. I do have some music cd-r's, but I don't use them. I
nearly always want to edit anything I record on the cd-rw deck. And I use my pc

Yes ... or simply not use the remote when the Airhead is in use. I carry my R50

So, as I see it the practial solutions are ...

1. don't use the remote when the Airhead is in use or

However if this were the case then the volume adjustment circuit, well ... I

So the signal has a more direct path to the jack and therefore less chance of

LP4 recording made in the 940 to two discs in SP mono. Yes, it takes four

I do this two times a week, it's not a one-time issue. That's why re-recording

You should download version 5.7 from my web pages:

Here is published unregistered version and when you copy your

Thanks for your reply. I'm glad to see you're still in business Martin! Your
program sure save me a lot of button pushing the first time round. BTW,
what do folks tell you about your program vs a PS/2 keyboard on those
MD decks so equipped (like the 940)?

People usually prefer WinRemote because they can download titles from
internet CDDB database and then transfer them to the MD,
which is more comfortable then typing on keyboart.
But PC keyboart is much much better than sony remote controller.

I think that best solution will be some software like WinRemote
which will be able to communicate with MD deck directly via
RS232 and not by IR transmitter.

That's correct. Specifically two 2-hour programs (Diane Ream) on successive
days ... otherwise when I'm at home between programs I can just record in mono
mode as you suggested (and I do).

set the timer for
the 940 to take over (also in SP mono) when the R50's disc is about to fill,
and get the recording in SP mono across two discs, which the R50 or the E40
could play with no problem.

Yes, that's an interesting suggestion. I could purchase another Radio Shack

recording for the R50. Rats, if only the 510 sitting on my self was working
(but if it was I would not have the 940!). Otherwise I cannot split this way as
the show comes on about 2 hours after I would turn the R50 on ... I would get 40
minutes of it only.

Still, an interesting suggestion.

More to the point, would I pay over $200 for a portable MD recorder? The
answer to that for me is four times yes: Sony MZ-R30, Sharp MS-702, Sony
MZ-R90, Sharp MS-722. The R30 was the most expensive unit when purchased,
at $350.

To be clear, I'm asking about a player only, not recorder. I have an MZ-R50
that I paid $465 for when it first hit the market three years ago. It has been
wonderful. Now that I have a 940 deck with LP4 I want to use that for time
shifting radio. So I need a player. Otherwise I'm taking 2-4 hours to copy the
LP4 over to mono on the R50. That will work but it's is time consuming making
the transfer.

So I'm looking for a portable player. I have an E40 and most of the time a
player is just fine and if I need portable recording I do have the R50.

I would spend $200 for a player, reluctantly. I would be very happy at $100.
It needs to have LP4 capability.

I noted on a link to ZDNet that the products will not be shipping to the US
until Oct and that it is read-only, not rw. And they mention mp3. Toshiba and
Samsung are mentioned also. So far nothing particularly exciting from my
viewpoint.

But it makes me wonder why Sony did not tap this market with the MD format.

Video Direct. I had considered the 440 but since the 510 was a low end unit I
figured I might be a similar risk with the 440. Anyway, the 940 as optical and
coax digital in and out. In fact two optical ins. I also wanted this
flexibility. The 940 has the control A1 II interface, ps/2 keyboard interface
and time record switch. I am very pleased with it, heavy solid feel (hopefully
more than a lead chassis) and the preformance of LP4 mode for time shifting
radio. It is type R and comparing rock cd's I can tell no difference in the
copy compared to the original (of course I could not tell much if any difference
with the 510 and ATRAC 4.0).

Hope this helps.

the writeable media it's excellent. Sure CD-R's are less but one cannot erase
and re-record. Now consder cd-rw's. They are $3 each the least expensive I've
seen at retail (Memerex 3pk at BB) but you can only erase from the last track
back and cannot do the masterful editing work that MD's seem to handle with
aplumb. So are MD's worth $2 ea (5 or 10 pk Memorex at BB)?

I don't see how they can be consider other than a bargain by comparison. To
compare an MD with a cd-r, like some have done, is not comparing apples to

Yes ... I take the line out from an MZ-R50 (MD recorded on an MDS-JB940) to a

The Sharp MS-722 DAC ... you find it very good? At home I take the optical out

outboard DACs.

Yes, that's what I do at home ... I'm looking for a way to get better
performance from the portable equipment. I first hit on this need when I
compared a metal cassette tape I made on a two head Sony Pro Cassette Walkman
(WMA-D6) and compared it to an MD made on the Sony MZ-R50. Source was cd with
analog feed to the cassette deck and optical to the R50. Guess which sounded
dramatically better?

The metal cassette. I reasoned it is likely the DAC stage in the R50. When I
played the same MD on the 940 feeding an external DAC the differences
dissappeared ... in fact the MD sounded more true to the CD than the cassette
(as an aside a metal cassette made on a home 3 head deck sounded identical to
the source cd, as did an MD made on the 940).

These findings with the home units are as I expected but not the portable. I
expected the MD to sound better ... it did not. I'm looking to correct that if
I can. Regardless I still prefer MD for many reasons (not the least of which is
that both tape transports failed during this test)!

Thanks.

The claim has been made that you can record a CD to MD, then re-record MD to MD
via analog inputs about 8-9x before noticeable degredation becomes apparent. I
have not verified this but I've seen it claimed on several occasions by those
who have tested it.

By analogy we should be ok going from mp3 to MD. I do this and the sound is
just fine. I convert using MusicMatch, then burn a cd-r (to keep in my
collection) on the computer then copy the cd-r to MD in the hi fi system using a
cd and MD deck via optical inputs.

I first used 128 kbps mp3's, but quickly went to 160 kbps for increased
fidelity. I now try to keep the floor at 192 kbps mp3 files and they seem just
fine via critical ear phone listening (Sennheisen 580's via a Total AirHead
amp), source usually an R50 portable recorder/player. I'm using an ISDN line
but if I had cable or DSN I'd probably go to the highest mp3 encoding available.

Re: MD: Difference

2001-02-05 Thread John Small

From Audio Hi-Fi Equipment,
http://www.geocities.com/SunsetStrip/Club/1484/audio.htm

Mini Discs are junk and total waste of time and money. They have "lossy compression"
which ruins the stereoscopic imaging, ruins the dynamics, and sound too "harsh."

This technology was obsolete before it reached the USA because now CR-R, CD-RW, and
the upcomming DVD-R and DVD-RW are becomming the new standards. Unfortunately, some
European and Asian countries have adopted this mediocre, soon to be obsolete format.

You can get better results recording on a hi-grade cassette deck and using metal
cassette tapes.
Stereo Review article: Recording Rivalry MiniDisc vs Dolby S

On Mon, 5 Feb 2001 13:58:58 -0500, "Donald Person" [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:

But even so -- I find that the conveniences of MD far outweigh its'

I think Don covers the ground adequately. MD may not be 'perfect music forever'
but in my hands it is at least as good, yes even better than my Nakamachi
cassette deck (Dolby B, C ... not HX or S) and so much easier to use that it's
absolutely no contest. Basically I could not tell any difference with either
the Nak (3 discreet heads) or MD (JE510 or ATRAC 4), excepting the Nak added
some hiss and occasionally I'd hear wow and flutter ... esp sustained piano
notes. Mostly I record rock and jazz. Not classical (I listen to the records
or CD's for this when I am resting comfortably at home).

The article cited above was by Ken Pohlman using a JE500 (ATRAC 4) vs a Teac
Dolby HX/S deck. He found the highs cut and somewhat strident compared to the
cassette. Well, I'm not using my cassette and I am using the MD equipment.

There was, oddly, a comment about MD's limited to 74 minutes while cassettes are
90 minutes. Given that 45 minutes per side = one album and may not equal one CD
I don't really see the point. Anyway everyone knows what a PITA it is rewind to
other side if that's the music you want to listen to.

From this 1997 review the Hi-Fi site above boasts, 'MD's are junk and a total
waste of time and money'. Now I have not read this site before but it makes me
wonder about the remaining advice.

So, as Don says, others can debate but the convenience of MD coupled with more
than adequate sound makes the choice for MD a slam dunk. Much better than
carrying CD's and a large portable player (which cannot record) by MD standards.

If some prefer cassette I may have a BX3 for sale!
