Re: [MBZ] Ethelred is now Ready
That is a great price - compared to what I got Frosch for. Perfect starter SL, given that you have poured so much quality work into having it fully functional. It needs stuff, especially the #7 problem. Hence the price. The paint is a nothing, I know this guy... I'm ready for something zippy. With a clean #7 I was quite surprised at how strong it feels. It's no 560, but it ain't bad! Much better than our 450 was. I think it's also turned in some 21MPG highway runs, but with #7 in its bad state it's more like 11 around town. I am however disappointed to not find out the answer to the #7 mystery... You think _you_ are disappointed! But I just don't have time, so it's priced so that the next guy who wants a shot at it won't feel too bad about what he's getting. Car's got a few leaks to deal with too. I'd have taken care of them, but #7 was the gating item in my mind. OTOH, I've been driving it for years this way, and enjoying the ride. The money I'm losing on it is _way_ less expensive than a divorce... If anybody here should want it, well OK then. But make sure you read all the details to see if it's something you want to tackle. Action and audio. Not just how the key press feels, but how it controls the sound. Better keyboards have better action that better mimic a mechanical piano. Keep in mind, though, that even mechanical pianos have a _lot_ of variation in action. The better keyboards are "sampled" rather than generated. That means a recording was made and this recording is tweaked to get each pitch on the piano. The result is an "envelope" that sounds much more like a mechanical piano. The better keyboards use more samples - both to decrease the number of pitches that have to be created from each sample and to have different samples for the various intensities of key presses. > Anyone on the list a keyboard player who might want to weigh > in on this? A piano teacher I know choose a Casio PX-330 as one of the very best of the lower-priced keyboards - as of a couple years ago. It is not as good as an acoustic, but it's good enough it was used as the second piano for a duet recital. I have not played it - but I have heard it. [MBZ] Stripped bolt bugs spacewalkers
If you messed up a do-it-yourself job around your home over the weekend, you're in good company: a new power switching unit at the International Space Station has had to be tethered and left partly-fitted, after a jammed bolt led to the spacewalking electricians abandoning their installation attempt. The spacewalk was scheduled to attach a new unit that helps route power generated by the ISS's solar panels to the space station's internal systems. Since it's one of four units the ISS uses, there's no danger of blackouts, so NASA decided that the recalcitrant bolt needed a re-think. "Even with three such channels unavailable, flight controllers have been able to reroute power to critical station systems and payloads with only a minimal impact on operations," NASA says. The space agency added that "The most probable cause is likely a combination of a slight misalignment in the positioning of the spare unit for its installation prior to bolting and possible damage to the threads of the receptacle posts on the S-zero truss to which the MBSU must be bolted in place." Astronauts Akihiko Hoshide of Japan and American Sunita Williams were installing the new suitcase-sized main-bush switching unit to replace a faulty switch. One of the two unit's bolts, which NASA says needed 15 turns to be considered secure, kept sticking at the ninth turn. An attempt to clean the housing with nitrogen gas were unsuccessful, as were attempts to remove the bolt. NASA has announced that the astronauts will take another shot at installing the unit this Wednesday (September 5). NASA will broadcast the spacewalk on NASA TV. http://www.theregister.co.uk/2012/09/03/stuck_bolt_bugs_spacewalkers/ The bolt stuck at the ninth turn and it needed a total of fifteen turns to tighten. [MBZ] OT: Firefox, Opera allow crooks to hide an entire phish site in a link
Watch out for the tinyurl that isn't Posted in Malware, 3rd September 2012 15:52 GMT A shortcoming in browsers including Firefox and Opera allows crooks to easily hide an entire malicious web page in a clickable link - ideal for fooling victims into handing over passwords and other sensitive info. Usually, so-called "phishing attacks" rely on tricking marks into visiting websites designed by criminals to masquerade as banks and online stores, thus snaffling punters' credentials and bank account details when they try to use the bogus pages. However this requires finding somewhere to host the counterfeit sites, which are often quickly taken down by hosting companies and the authorities or blocked by filters. Instead, the malicious web pages can be stored in data URIs - uniform resource identifiers, not to be confused with URLs - which stuff the web code into a handy string that when clicked on, instructs the browser to unpack the payload and present it as a page.snip http://firefox.tweetmeme.com/story/11909847532/firefox-opera-allow-crooks-to-hide-an-entire-phish-site-in-a-link-o-the-register ___ http://www.okiebenz.com For new and used parts go to www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com

[MBZ] Like Buttah
I have been away for a few weeks helping my sister deal with being left by the father of her children. Las time I drove Frosch was the Seattle Show and shine, then under the car cover she went. Pulled the car out from her cocoon and went to the Caffeine and Gasoline Griots host each first Saturday of the month. Early morning gathering of roughly like minded folks with cars in various conditions of spiffiness. Some are rare and pretty cool, others are rat rods or garage queens and some are just a varied iteration of the same model. Either way, it is a nice start to the weekend to get some java and a sweet treat then wander the parking area admiring cars. September was going to host Italian iron later in the morning, so a few red cars were there. Rolls Royce had new models from their stable on show. Ugly cars now. I enjoyed chatting with a few folks and seeing the cars while sipping italian coffee. Not the usual service of java, but the donuts were the same. Really like the Fiat Topolino much more than the red go fast cars. Drive down was uneventful. About 30 miles from my house to the headquarters. By 10am it had warmed up, but not enough to go top down. Time to leave the spaces for the incoming stallions, and such. Driving back home I was just amazed at how smooth and dreamy this car was on the highway at speed. I really like her. Not all rough and stumbly the way Gump was. I loved Gump, she was simple and practical, but not smooth. Frosch is like silk. Smooth heavy whipping cream drizzled on peaches freshly picked and cut in a bowl. Warm and soft as a baby's tummy waiting for a raspberry by grandpa. So, I skipped going right home and went to a Home Despot for garden supplies a few miles north so I could extend my peaceful wheel time. Yesterday I used the ROB and the new to me Griots carnuba wax on Frosch. I had done a good enough job with the FLAPS stuff earlier in August, but want to get her ready for winter storage with a stout coat of protection. I used the stick wax. Sort of like the rub on deoderant stick that you wipe onto the buffer pad in sparing amounts. It went on easily and buffed out to a great shine. Re: [MBZ] clues - tach & AC stop addendum
I have an intermittent tach in my '83 300D. I've noticed that changing buttons on the ACC controller usually brings it back to life. My AC doesn't work so I don't know if the AC cuts out with the tach, but there does seem to be something going on. Different fuses, as you note, but perhaps a common ground somewhere? Allan "G. M. [MBZ] any clues - tach & AC shut off
Prior to my '85 300TD engine going south, I noticed that my tachometer (goes to 0 rpm) and AC compressor would shut off after some random period of time. When starting the car from cold, both the tach and AC work OK. I recently had a rebuilt motor installed and this tach & AC problem hasn't changed. The Freon Pressure Switch by the receiver/dryer is new and all the local connections there have been cleaned and lubricated with conductive grease, and the AC Overload Relay, located up under the dash on the far right side), has been taken apart, the PC board resoldered and connections cleaned and lubed and I still have the problem of the tach & AC shutting off. Since the tach and AC compressor are on different fuses, I don't think the problem rests there. I'm wondering if the problem may be heat related, as the tach & AC tend to shut off 5-15 min. after starting/running the car. Any clues? TIA. G. M. Re: [MBZ] Oil
The newest diesel ratings are definitely for the latest "low emission" engines, for your 20 or 30 year old diesels you are better off with the traditional oils (which are getting harder to find, as most stores only stock oil for cars made within the last 10 years or so since few people keep a car longer than that).
