[MBZ] Oil pressure drop

2017-03-28 Thread clay via Mercedes
Since Allen is going to be my DD for the future, I am taking many hours to get
her a little more reliable. The W220 is going to be coming back, but I do not
trust it.

I got the SD with what I am sure was long delayed fluid care. I have not done
PS or brake fluid, but the oils got swapped for fresh along with fluids. The
Diff goo was just nasty. Stank and black as tar. It was removed and I ran
some fresh until it no longer had black crud.

Engine oil was pretty thick and black as well. I could not feel much in the
way of granularity in the old fluid, and poured a fresh quart through to help
flush the old. Before the change, the oil pressure was pegged at speed, and
around 2 bar at idle. After the change I still peg under usage, but now idle
pressure is between 1.5 to 1.0 bar when hot.

I have about 200 miles on the new oil. I wonder if I should run it the full 3k
miles, or do a change a bit sooner. Maybe use Marvel Mystery oil or SeaFoam to
give it a good scrubbing for a few minutes before the next change over.

You would probably like playing with a Deutz air cooled engine.
Neighbor bought a semi-truck that had a Deutz air cooled V-8 intended
for farm equipment. It did well on flat ground but wouldn't hold up in
the mountains. One interesting feature was a "grass catcher" that
chopped up any vegetation before it got to the fins of the cylinders.
Big warning sign in German: "Don't stick fingers here." or something
like that because doing so would chop them up as well.

You could probably slip one of these smaller Deutz aircooled diesels

Which of the butchered wires in the dash are the wires I need.

Background Brown/black (constant 12v)

I figured out the antenna wire

Nothing left to be the lighted wire

Since the discussion of the pressure relief valve on the IP, I figured I

Stretched it to 27mm (1 1/8") and put it back. Idle is better. It
seems like acceleration may be better too. I didn't take it out and
drive it. It seemed to rev faster.

Got the electrical problem figgered out. If Manfred didn't already have
a keg of bier, (good, German) i'd buy him a bottle. Manfred suggested
fuse 12. Sure enough, when I took fuse 12 out, the bottom stayed stuck
to the fuse holder. It looked fine, but was broken at the clamp of the
holder. I am out of red fuses here, so I robbed one form the sunroof,
and all is now well again.

Many fuses are downstream of switches and get power only when certain
switch configurations are set. F1, for example should only get power when
the light switch in park or headlight OR with the light switch in left or
right standing AND the ignition switch in off or acc.

You really need to look at pp 104-105 (power distribution) of the ETM and
identify specific circuits that fail to get power even with the switches set
right. Power or no-power at any fuse doesn't indicate anything unless you
know the switch settings.

Basically, ALL of the power (except starter) comes into the light switch
first and most of it is fed from there to the ignition switch via two wires.
But there is also one wire from the light switch hot feed to the fuse box
fuses 2 and (I think) 6 that should be powered at all times; this wire it
also powers the windows through a relay. Fuse 2 is supposed to power turn
signals (among many other things). The two (a and b) window fuses should
only be powered if the window relay is powered through fuse 12 (ignition
switch in run or start).

Hope this helps.

Yes. I am glad it is a 123. The weirdness continues anyhow. The top
row of fuses: 1,3,5,7,... and window fuses a and b on the left side, all

have no

juice, switch on, according to the meter. Some of them are for headlights

and

tail lights, but weirdly, the headlights and taillights
work, but the turn signals don't. I checked this with a good digital
meter, black on engine, red probing fuse contacts. Bottom fuses (Even
numbers) and fses c, d, on the right, all showed 12.13V.

Switch? Wire from switch? Headlights are unswitched...but they work.

That was my first thought, but no amount of wiggling could create a closed
circuit, where generally with a bad switch, the contact can be made by

wiggling

the key, or switching on, off, or wiggling key counterclockwise.

The list being sure it was a ground, I tried there second.

lot worse on a newer vehicle.

Y'all may remember a couple weeks ago I posted about the electrical
gremlins in the 240D (81)

The thing acts like it is possessed by the prince of darkness (Lucas)
not designed by MB/Bosch

These circuits all went out at the same time:
Gas gauge
temp gauge
turn signals (4 ways work)
both window circuits
heater blower

Today I dug into the cluster and loosened and tightened the chassis
grounds behind the cluster.

It resulted in no change.

I left the switch on in the process so if bad contact was made good, I
would hear the blower or other circuits working. There was nothing.

Where to look next? Either there is a bad feed to multiple circuits
in the fusebox or bad ground that affects all these circuits.

I'll head out with a meter to be sure all are getting juice, but my
thinking is still that I am chasing a bad ground somewhere. It does
not appear to be the grounds behind the cluster.

Plus one! Sehr GUT!

Last fall I got a new Bosal exhaust system for the 240D as it was only
patches holding the patches together. Monday the exhust got loud. I
looked under and didn't see anything wrong. today I looked more
thouroughly with old clothes, and with the car running I could see a
leak in front of the resonator. The new pipe has cracked completely
around about 5" in front of the resonator where a triangular
reinforcement was welded on. I tried to put a bandaid on it, but it
can't be patched easily because of the reinforcement. Crockauto said it
was under warranty. It is going to cost me about $20 freight to get a
new one and send back the cracked new one. I don't think it has gone

Re: [MBZ] This is Strangely Cool

2017-03-28 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
Its too bad that Jay Leno got the "Jay Leno's Garage" show on TV. He used to
have episodes about his car on TV. I thought the Tatra was Yugoslavian but it
might have be Czech. He told a story about it being a Nazi killer. The Nazi
officers would acquire the cars and take them fast through turns, the swing
axle suspension would jack up, poor drivers would lift off the throttle and
spin out of control to their death.

Yeah that sounds like the same stuff, I don't recall Meguiars The googs

spendy.

The antenna/accessory wire is blue on both ends. The red wire is not in

Re: [MBZ] Dumb stereo wire question

2017-03-28 Thread Jaime Kopchinski via Mercedes
You only need to hook up the 4 pin connector to make the radio work: 12v
constant, 12v switched, lights, ground. Start there and make sure it turns
on.

Antenna trigger is the single wire.

Any car with the electronic radio 81-93 will have the same harness for power

If there is an additional connector for anti theft, leave it disconnected.

Where did you get this radio? Does it have the anti thieft disabled?

I rebuilt mine. Kinda tricky, and getting the arm back on the
shaft in exactly the same position can be hard. The valve body is
aluminum and so it scratches easily when trying to get the shaft
seals out. But if yours just leaks down, you may not have to
replace those.

I have given up the fight on trying to get the regulator out of the

Coupla things -- stripped gears, you will see. Those little plastic
sliders have broken, they are "riveted" in. The driven gear arm has
popped a rivet (I had this on the TD at one time and repaired with like
a 5mm nut/bolt ground down a bit to fit in the area where the rivet was,
to get clearance). I'm guessing #2 or #3.

the way up and firmly in position, so I’m not sure if someone jammed something
in there to hold it or if the teeth might be chewed off at the end of the

I would want to drive it all the time.

Looks almost like it has an oil bath air cleaner.

2017-03-28 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
No, I just meant they were physically different. I don’t think I ever had to
change a rear regulator, which is why I remarked about it. I figured they were
more or less the same front and back. I’ve done the later ones with the cable.
 Those are weird.

I’m working from home today, so I’ll probably take a stab at pulling the door
panel off during lunch to see what’s up.

I’ve got a buyer for the 300SEL who wants to pay me to address some of the
little stuff before they take delivery. The window is one of the issues as is
the fuel door vacuum actuator. They also asked if I would put a new set of
injectors in it, too.

Re: [MBZ] Anybody rebuild the sls pump?

2017-03-28 Thread MG via Mercedes
That is the valve in the back. I have rebuilt the one in my TD
and it has been working fine for over 5 years now. The big thing
to remember, if you can find a kit, is you need to indelibly mark
the position of the arm that connects to the link from the sway
bar on the shaft going into the pump. You can figure out where it
should be positioned from the manual diagrams but it's a royal
pain and if you are in any way mechanically/ spatially challenged
in the slightest then you may never get it where it should be.
The factory almost certainly had jigs to set this. Don't ask.

The kit from Mercedes is 000-586-00-32 and shows as available for
$40-$50 depending on how good a relationship you have with your
parts man.

Manfred
Not mechanically or spatially challenged, just lazy and I'll deny
I ever reveled this.

Karl Wittnebel via Mercedes wrote:

Oh, sorry! I thought you meant the operation was different. Yes, front
and rear are always different, at least since the 60s. The 124 and
newer with the cable rear are way different.

On the 123, 126 and earlier, the MBs have curved rack and pinion front
and rear, and the removal/problems are similar. It sounds like Clay has
a dead motor. It seems you have a good motor and a regulator some way
disconnected from the regulator or regulator disconnected from the
glass. Usually you can hear the regulator going up and down if the
slide ifs broken or disconnected.

The easiest rear fix I had was on the rusty SDL. The rivet that holds
the slide had popped out. The air hammer and a bfh solved that pretty
quick.

I meant they were different in the way they were constructed. I
understand the stripped rack teeth thing. Not so much like the
“scissor” arrangement like the ones used on the fronts.

I’m going to tear into the door today and see what I find. The window
is all the way up and firmly in position, so I’m not sure if someone
jammed something in there to hold it or if the teeth might be chewed
off at the end of the travel. I’ll try moving the window by hand, as
that will probably be the giveaway.

Late front ones are stamped steel, and the teeth wear/break off.
Car-part.com for a good used regulator and motor.

I put cast gear regulator in the driver door of one SDL. It was from
a gen I 126. You have to swap the motor and regulator together.
different sprockets on the motor.

My guess is you have a stamped one, and it has the teeth gone.

I've only had slide/rivet problems on the rear.

with the door open, try pushing down the glass while your assistant
switches the window down (or up, in case some monkey reversed the
wires.) If the window works except clear up, then it is the gear rack.

Dan Penoff via Mercedes

Looking into the last of the issues on the 300SEL, I knew the PO said
one of the back windows didn’t work, but that was a minor thing I
haven’t paid any attention to.

I checked it out tonight and found the left rear window doesn’t work.
I can hear the motor in both directions, but no movement of the glass.
I looked a the regulators on some of the parts sites and the rear
window regulators look very different than the ones I’ve been used to
seeing. Is there something about these that is prone to failure, or
that I should expect to find when I crack open the door panel? Sliding
jaw issues? Mechanical problems?

They look a lot simpler than the regulators on the front doors.

in that case, you have to unbolt the motor from the regulator. (mostly
blind, by feel) a light and mirror can help you visualize what you are
up against, but are not much good for the actual bolt removal.

I have given up the fight on trying to get the regulator out of the
passenger side of Allen. The motor does not spin up, so the window is
not lowering, which would make it all simple to remove. I think the
motor froze, as when power is applied, there is a click or grunt but
no motion.

Have you lubricated all moving parts as well as the motor bearings if
accessible? Have you tried Deoxit and WD40 and Rusteater (from Autozone) and
all the lesser known lubricants that work for other DIYers?
Have you wiggled and pushed on all the mechanical stuff after each lubricant?
Have you lubricated the the tracks with silicone grease very, very, lightly?
