[mythtv-users] Standalone VFD/LCD recommendations?

2005-12-28 Thread Yeechang Lee
I'm looking for recommendations on an add-on VFD or LCD display for my
MythTV box. Most of the relevant threads I've looked at deal with
cases with built-in displays, unfortunately. My criteria:

* Fits into a 5.25" drive bay.
* Readable 8' away in the dark.
* As many lines and columns as is practical while complying with the
  previous two criteria.
* Prebuilt; I don't want to have to solder.
* Cheap as possible.
* Usable hard buttons and status lights (a red light to indicate that
a recording is occurring, for example) would be nice, but not
  essential.

Suggestions? I've seen the Crystalfontz and Matrix Orbital displays,
but it's hard to tell online how readable they are.

Thanks for the additional explanation; I'll see if there is a lineup

Erm, software RAID 5 isn't *that* bad. I've got a sw RAID 5 array that only
consists of four ATA drives, and can write at a sustained rate of 30MB/s
without a problem. I've got a 5-drive U320 software RAID 5 array in another
machine that does ~80MB/s without a problem.

[mythtv-users] hd-3000 and pvr-500 together

2005-12-28 Thread Mike

Is it possible to run this together on 0.18.1
-pvr-500 basic NTSC analog cable
-hd-3000 OTA HDTV

I've gone through and compiled up a new kernel, can cat
/dev/dvb/adapter0/dvr0 and get HDTV from an antenna. But I can't get my
already working NTSC setup running with the HD channels. I already
rebuilt mythtv with DVB support, I'm fairly sure that the card is
working otherwise I don't think I would have gotten files that I could
play via mplayer out of cat off the hd-3000 card. Although 2.6.14.4 with
ivytv-0.4.1 and bttv wasn't a fun endevor to figure out why they didn't
work together. I can't compile half of the guys tools for the HD-3000
card because hes got a bunch of errors in his code for later versions of
make. However, I can use build and use azap and those tools which is how
I tuned it to test it in the first place. So I'm pretty sure the linux
side of it is done. All I need to do is figure out how to make myth do
what I want it to do with both of these cards together.

PVR-500 tuners selected to my analog cable profile from zap2it
HD-3000 tuner selected to OTA HDTV channels from zap2it

Can't select 'Scan for channels' or 'advanced'.

Can somebody help me or give me advice?

TIA

To make a long story short, my 2.8TB JFS-on-LVM2-on-software RAID 5
array has certain mysterious performance bottlenecks that result in
7.5-10MB/s local write speeds, despite eight spindles and two 3Ware
7506 controller cards in JBOD mode and on separate buses and with
iowait never going above a few percentage points at the very
most. Over the network that's even slower, of course.

I've going to be rebuilding the array after backing it up to an
Infrant 600 (the clear winner, in my mind, among the recent spate of
"NAS in a shoebox" offerings popping up all over the place) with four
500GB drives I'll be temporarily using in RAID 0 for the time being,
and am looking forward to finding out whether the bottleneck is in
mdadm, lvm2 (the likeliest suspect in my mind; none of the several
academic self-assembled terabyte-RAID 5 array setups I've read
benchmarks for online seems to use it, although otherwise essentially
identical), JFS, or elsewhere. I would be surprised if, once I reach
write performance on the array closer to theoretical potential, I can
use NFS to stream recordings to it without any trouble. But in the
meanwhile I'm glad Samba lets me stream a HDTV recording while also
playing back a HDTV stream with no IOBOUND error messages (except the
very occasional one or two if I'm doing something disk- but non-MythTV
related on the frontend/backend MythTV box); after a month of butting
my head against seemingly-endless IOBOUND messages with NFS v3 that's
a good thing, believe me.

I can get the TV to recognize that it's getting 1080i input from the
computer. (The info on the screen says so.) I can't get it to deal
with 720p for some reason. I can get the TV to handle lower resolution
SVGA and XGA modes up to 1024x768 fine.

With 1080i I get what is close to the twm screen, but there are two
problems:
1. The screen is greatly overscanned. Perhaps 20% is not displayed.
2. The interlacing is off, or at least that's my guess. Everything is
displayed twice, with one flickering image directly below another. They
are close: the bar at the top of an xterm has its two images overlapping.

I've tried every modeline I can find, and have tried two different
modeline calculators, but I can't get the two images to converge. The
TV seems to be reporting things correctly to X (59-61 Vsync, reasonable
Hsync, etc.) Telling X to ignore the TV's info doesn't help in any case.

It seems like it should be easy enough to play with the vertical
blanking interval to fix this, and that I'm close. But I'm guessing,
and I'm not making progress. Is there a reasonble way to tweak the
modeline to iterate toward a solution here?

newer nvidia drivers don't support interlace modes over DVI.

Seriously?? I sure didn't see that in their README. After my original
posting, I bought (from somewhere that I can return it) a 6600 card that
has component video out and it works fine. (It exhibited exactly the
same problem with DVI, though.) The card with HDTV encoding is a
satisfactory solution if not an ideal one (both technically and in
cost.) It sure seems stupid to have the card encode HDTV to have the TV
turn it back into digital for the DLP display when I should be able to
do it over DVI. Certainly the cable box's 1080i DVI is a bit clearer
than its component video. Is there any way that the open source (dv)
driver will work at 1920x1080i to DVI or is a waste of more time to even
try?

Overscan won't change what you see for TV (ie. the overscan is the same
whether from your computer or your cablebox), so change the gui overscan
settings for your TV to fix the gui. if you want to fix tv video, SVN lets
you adjust overscan, or find the service menu info for your tv to lessen its
overscan.

OK, I haven't laid mythtv into this mix yet, so I'll worry about it
then. The component video from the new card at 720p and 1080i exhibits
only small overscan, about what I'd want.

While you're listening, Steve, you were complaining about the VIA
IEEE1394 chipset. I can't find anything but VIA. Fry's had a dozen
cards, all VIA. Did you have to mail order to get something with the TI
chip? Do you have a recommendation?

Thanks again for the help.

Since you brought it up...

Is gigabit necessary? I have 2 Myth systems connected via 100mbit
using CIFS/samba with relatively default settings - I searched google
I really couldn't find any options that would help aside from the
default socket options. One machine is the BE/FE with PVR350+Air2PC
and the other a database/FE/RAID5 file server. I don't have any major
problems with the SD recordings, although I have seen skips maybe once
per 3-4 hours of recorded content. HD recordings regularly have tons
of IOBOUND that make shows unwatchable. It seems like the 1080i
channels do this more than 720, although I thought 720p and 1080i were
effectively the same bandwidth.
I tried NFS, but I could never get it to work right and had VERY
bad lag problems that would cause the kernel to become more or less
unresponsive until I would force an unmount of the share.
I didn't think that recording only 1HD/1SD stream could have
problems with 100mbit full duplex, but I'm at a loss as to what other
settings I should be looking at. I'm hoping there are some buffer
settings with the new HD recorder code in SVN [that patch made some
shows watchable] but I'm not sure where to look for that, or if that
would even help me.

I've been using the nfsvers=3, tcp, and 32K read/write buffers options
someone else mentioned in my home network NFS setup since long before
taking up MythTV. Believe me, I'd still much rather use NFS--I'm a
*lot* more comfortable with fiddling with NFS export and mount options
than with smb.conf--but Samba works and works well.

> SMB versus nfs and smb being faster is impossible IMO.

Again, speaking as someone who's had a lot more hands-on experience
with NFS than Samba, I know very well that modern Samba is as fast as,
if not faster than (and certainly a lot more interoperable across
platforms) than NFS. Many found NFS pre-v3 to be noticeably slower
than Samba, for example, and although as I've mentioned I've always
used NFS v3 the notion that today's Samba is faster--or at least more
efficient in some way I haven't figured out yet on my particular
setup--than NFS is hardly a strange one.

N.B. - To be completely accurate, I'm actually using cifs, as smbfs has
a 2GB file limit which I only discovered after mythbackend kept
crashing with no error messages whatsoever after a certain point in my
HDTV recordings.

isn't two different line-ups for the two tuners. My local cable provider apparently remaps the channels inside theirset-top box. Yeah, cable into a set-top box decrypts the digital cable so your TV can view it.  If you don't use the set-top box, then only analog channels are available.  Every major cable company has different channel layouts for digital than analog.  The problem IS that you have the wrong channel lineup setup for your setup.  If you are not using digital, then change your zap2it settings to your cable company's analog lineup.  Chris' answer is correct.

The sytem logs have no entries that coincide with this

Anyone have any idea what's causing this? Any

later version)? Should I upgrade the kernel? Could
this still be ivtv-related?

Hmm, I wonder if this may be related to why nfs apparently locks my

If you want to use the keyboard instead of a mouse then Ratpoison may
be the window manager for you. It has no mouse and everything is done
by keys. It's also very lightweight and ideal for something like a
Myth box. Lots of MythTV'ers use it, including myself and I think it's
the cat's whiskers :)

Chris> The solution is to download the correct channel lineup.

Like I said, if I feed the input from the cable into the card *before*
the set-top box, the channels are different. And I don't seem to have
any option from datadirect to map them any other way, which I why I
don't think I'm downloading the "wrong" channel lineup.

On the other hand, I am poking at the channel editor in mythtv...maybe
this does what I want.

Re: [mythtv-users] "This is close to an existing cut point" -> missing option

2005-12-28 Thread Wendy Seltzer
Try this patch (against svn 8386).  The OSD popup seems only to
allow four items (at least without digging deeper into the theme
files), but since you can use ESC to cancel, it doesn't seem much of a
loss to do away with the "Cancel" button from the "close to an existing
cutpoint" popup.

(Since mpeg4-mpeg4 transcoding is still broken for me, I can't tell how
it handles the cutpoints, but at least it lets you place them...)

Agreed.

At least the following NFS mount options should be used if not already:

mount -o rsize=32768,wsize=32768,nfsvers=3,tcp server:/nfs/export /
local/mountpoint

The "tcp" option may not be necessary but I haven't taken the time to

Something odd going on there, I have an almost identical setup for my master
backend, and NFS works great at handling multiple HDTV streams (both my HD
capture devices are in slave backends that write to the master via NFS),
along with the occasional SD stream thrown in as well.

[mythtv-users] Important information concerning DataDirect's outage

2005-12-28 Thread Bruce Markey

Zap2It appears to be suffering some system problems today. This
may cause unfortunate problems when running "mythfilldatabase"
for DataDirect video sources. The grab may appear to succeed and
mythfilldatabase may clear data for the target date, however, the
new data file may be empty. Mfdb normally updates the following
day (tomorrow) and the last day two weeks from now. Therefore, if
you ran mfdb today while Zap2It has this problem, it may delete
all your listing for tomorrow.

I would recommend the following:

1) Go to Setup->General and find the page for "Mythfilldatabase"
and uncheck "Automatically run mythfilldatabase". The options
will disappear from the screen but the values are stored and will
return when you check this box again. If you run mfdb from cron,
disable the cron job temporarily. In either case, don't run mfdb
automatically overnight until there is some verification that the
problem has been fixed.

2) Make a backup of your current "program" table that can be
restored in case data is lost in the next few days.

$ mysqldump -tc -u mythtv -pmythtv mythconverg program > program.sql

If needed, this can be restored with:

$ mysql -u mythtv -pmythtv mythconverg -e "delete from program;"
$ mysql -u mythtv -pmythtv mythconverg < program.sql

$ mythbackend --resched

3) If you've already lost program data and have a mysql backup from
within the past week or so:

$ grep "INSERT INTO \`program\` " mythtv_backup.sql > tmp_program.sql

This "tmp_program.sql" file can be restored as above. Older versions
of mysqlbackup may not use the backquotes so the grep string would
be "INSERT INTO program ".

Re: [mythtv-users] Cannot Change to Some Channels

2005-12-28 Thread Tyler Bartel
I did some further searching and found that everything in the channels
table seems alright but I am still unable to select any channel higher
than 123, if I select one from the program grid (they do all show up in
the grid) the the channel reverts to the one it was on previously or if
I channel up/down in live tv it simply wraps from 123 to channel 2. If
anyone has any ideas I'd really appreciate it, I'm stuck without a way
to switch to some channels.

It seems that recently something has caused my mythbox to be unable to
change to some channels both through the program grid or through the
channel up/down functions. My channel lineup goes from channel 2 to
channel 175 yet if I try to change to a channel which is beyond
channel 123 it wraps past th rest of the 100's to change to channel 2.

Anyone have any ideas?

[mythtv-users] KnoppMyth R5A26 Backend problems

2005-12-28 Thread Kichigai Mentat

-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-
Hash: SHA1

Hello. I'm running a KnoppMyth back-end that's got version R5A26.
However, I've discovered that it's got more than a couple unfortunate
flaws that hinder (IE completely prevent) working with a front-end.

I've been searching the internets and scouring the forums, so far,
none of the solutions have worked for me. So, I've decided that
drastic solutions are needed. I'm looking for some opinions.

1.) Delete, Rebuild the Database.
I've heard this solution does the trick, but I'm worrying about
the feasibility and how much time I'm going to be wasting with it.

2.) Build from scratch
Well, I'm thinking I would be better off just making a whole
new configuration. I don't think I'm going to compile from scratch.
Been there, tried that, didn't go so well. I've heard good things
about working with Gentoo, but I've never used it. I've also heard
Ubuntu has MythTV packages, and since it's Debian based, I feel kind
of comfortable with it.

Just wondering what people's experiences with these solutions/
configurations were like. If it's something to worry about, I'm using
a PVR-150 capture card.

I'm going to blatantly hijack this thread to record for posterity
that, at least with my setup (streaming HDTV recordings to a software
RAID 5+LVM2 array over Gigabit Ethernet with Fedora Core and the
ATrpms version of MythTV 18.1), Samba 3 is rock solid while NFS 3 is
pretty guaranteed to generate near-endless IOBOUND error messages in
mythbackend.log. More detail when I have the time and inclination to
write up my experiences, but I hope this helps others in my situation
in the meanwhile; a month of IOBOUND error messages despite endless
tuning attempts.

If you do this, make sure that you use the analog cable lineup from
zap2it, not the digital cable lineup.

If it's still wrong then you should send e-mail to zap2it so they can
fix the lineup.

I was thinking that you would use your cable box for one of the inputs and feed the cable directly into the other.

Anyhow, you seem to be downloading the wrong channel lineup.  The
solution is to download the correct channel lineup.  On 12/28/05, Roland Roberts <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote:

Uhm, no. I don't think so. The two tuners are onboard the PVR-500,
internally, no digital vs analog, this is all analog. And the issue
isn't two different line-ups for the two tuners.

My local cable provider apparently remaps the channels inside their
set-top box. Since I split the signal *before* the set-top box, I only
see the unencrypted channels. That's fine for my use (at present
anyway), but it means the program guide shows channel 13, but the mythtv
channel is 23. And elsewhere the guide shows channel 21, but the mythtv
channel is 69. And the guide shows channel 1, but the mythtv sees this
as channel 3. So I want a map that does "program guide says X, use Y".

hence ratpoison )

Here is a repost of a message I sent some time ago.

Hi all,

I had been meaning to try this for ages, but was bored today so I
thought I would risk WAF & FAF

I have a master backend/frontend running on FC3, I use my FC4
workstation as a frontend when the family insist on watching soap.

ratpoison makes alot of sense as kde is such a beast.
I also took the opportunity to change the way the frontend is spawned so
that on the odd occasion it crashes, you don't need to get up off the
lounge to "control-alt-backspace" the X

I have gdm set to autologon after 5 seconds.

The newest prebuilt rpm I could find was here:
ftp://sunsite.auc.dk/projects/newrpms/www/htdocs/apt/redhat/en/i386/fc2/RPMS.newrpms/ratpoison-1.3.0-1.rhfc2.nr.i386.rpm

this is a FC2 version that loaded on my FC3 without issue, and on my FC4
after installing "compat-readline"

It is a super lean window manager that spawns in an insant.
To get full screen xterm is as easy at typing "Control-c Control-t c"
(that's three keystrokes)
I would recommend it as it saves mucking around with disabling the kde
sound server, modifying mouse focus etc..

Why waste memory on a window manager when it is not required

On RedHat the "switchdesk" command creates .Xclients and
.Xclients-default in your home directory to set for kde
I created a .Xclients-ratpoison and called it from .Xclients , that will
keep it safe from being overwritten with "switchdesk"

Instead of having my startup commands in .kde/Autostart/myth-load.sh I
have put them into the .Xclients script
I also changed things around so that the window manager is spawned to
the background and it is the presence of mythfrontend process that
keeps the X session from dying. If the frontend exits, so does the X
session

My one line .Xclients file looks like this

exec ./.Xclients-ratpoison

My .Xclients-ratpoison looks like this

#!/bin/bash

/usr/bin/ratpoison &

# To get an xterm with Ratpoison, "Control-c Control-t c"

# Load nVidia driver custom settings
#nvidia-settings --load-config-only &
# Stop the Nvidia blue line problem

/usr/bin/aplay /usr/share/system-config-soundcard/sound-sample.wav &

# We are here because mythfrontend crashed or was exited

Re: [mythtv-users] Remapping channels

2005-12-28 Thread Chris Ribe
When you set up you Zap2It lineup, there is a screen that gives you the
option to select/deselect individual channels in your lineup.

It sounds like you need 2 separate lineups defined, one for digital
cable and one for analog cable.  Define the two lineups at Zap2It,
then run mythtvsetup and assign the appropriate lineup to each tuner.

If you have changed your lineup to correctly reflect the channels you
get, you will need to delete the program data from your database using
the mysql command line.  Unfortunately, I can't recall
exactly how to do it.   I had a similar problem recently, and
someone on the list was able to give me a solution, so searching the
archives for my name, mysql, and delete might yield some useful
results.

Hope this helps.

There just aren't any commercially available.

 You
could then go from the cable box via component to the encoder in the

Use LIRC and a IR-blaster to control your cable box. I, personally am sticking to OTA HDTV and not paying for trash. On 12/27/05,

[mythtv-users] Serious concerns about LiveTV Ringbuffer changes - a Q for develo pers

2005-12-28 Thread Buechler, Mark R

I have a question concerning the recent changes in LiveTV
around the Ringbuffer. I'm very concerned that without significant hardware
changes on my part I'll not be able to ever upgrade to the newer MythTV
versions. This is based on what I've seen of the changes so far. Let me
explain.

My recordings directory is a raid5 set which isn't the
fastest in the world but can handle two SD recordings just fine - unless it's
syncing. My live tv buffer is a raid0 of a couple disks - VERY fast. Now,
after a power outage my raid5 array takes hours to sync again. That means if
LiveTV is using that raid5 set I'm not watching TV for hours until the
resync is finished. The raid5 set is almost 700gig - not something
cheaply replaced (at least for me).

Another thing I'm considering is HD. If I attempt to
vew HD content from my DVB card while streaming it to the raid5 array it can't
really handle it too well - whereas with a separate live tv buffer it wasn't
a problem.

Is there any plan to have support for a live tv buffer SEPARATE
from recordings? I know the reason behind putting in this change and I agree
with it, however, I don't see how I can ever upgrade with this in place
as it is.

- Mark.

[mythtv-users] Remapping channels

2005-12-28 Thread Roland Roberts
First of all, I'm a newbie with mythtv. I've got it running for the
purposes of watching TV, but I haven't tried to record anything yet.

I'm using mythfilldatabase to populate the database from datadirect.
But right now, I've got my PVR-500 plugged directly into the cable
*without* the set-top box. This means I only get the non-encrypted
channels but it also means both tuners can operate simultaneously.
Unfortunately, it also means that all the channels are not where
datadirect says they are

Is there a way to change the channel mappings so the program guide
matches what I'm seeing?

regards,

roland

This will work fine. You will need to make two copies of your Channel change script.
I have changechannel and changechannel2 and in the script specify which
port they control eg. /dev/ttyS0 or /dev/ttyS1. The myth tv setup

channel changing per each tuner.On 12/28/05, Michael T. Dean <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote:

Re: [mythtv-users] Re: Xbox Remote Replacement with JP1 Remote: really a lircd.conf or irrecord question

2005-12-28 Thread R. Geoffrey Newbury
The documentation on the lirc site is not as crystal clear as it could be
or should be.

1) Your module has to match the IR receiving hardware. In my case I
use the lirc_imon module. The remote is handled later on. The module name
is not the remote name.
2) You need to compile using the correct module. Look at the
configure file in the top of the imon source tree.
3) You need to load the lirc_dev and your particular module (in my
case, lirc_imon.)
You can use rmmod and modprobe while testing, then put them into
modprobe.conf.
4) Lircd needs an lirc.conf file which matches the remote (NOT the
ir receiver).
Mode2 does not need an lircd.conf file: it just pulls the IR data
and pushes it to the screen. If you want extra functionality from a remote
which is masquerading as a different remote, then the output of mode2
should show you the key code outputs for the extra keys.
5) An lircd.conf file is a matchup listing of the key codes and key
names.
6) Lircd only works with a corresponding lircd.conf file...the key
codes have to match. Unmatched key codes get ignored.
7) irw allows you to test the lircd daemon without having an
lircd.conf (Next step up from mode2).
8) irrecord is a program to create an lircd.conf. You push a key
and name it, and it lines up key codes with that name.
9) lircd must be running for both irw and irrecord to work.
Finally, if you are passing commands to other programs, then you require a
lircrc file (or .lircrc file). This file must have key names which exactly
match the key names used in the lircd.conf file. The lircrc file lists the
program, and action to be taken for that named key.

Problem areas are:
Your hardware talks to /dev/lirc/0 instead to /dev/lirc. Make a symlink.
Permissions are messed up. Add "GROUP=MYTHTV" "MODE=666" to the correct
line in /etc/udev/rules.d or write a "10-lirc.rules" file.
Your lircd.conf file is not the correct file for your remote. Use mode2 to
look at the actual output of the remote. Browse the remote files to find
the correct one, or use irrecord to write your own.
lircd.conf and lircrc do not match up. Rewrite lircrc

Re: [mythtv-users] Pvr-500 or Plextor ConvertX, reliability.

2005-12-28 Thread Abre Chase
I can't speak for the PVR-500. But, I just traded out my Plextor for
a PVR-150. The MPEG4 format was more trouble than it was worth for
me. I could not get it to play on the xbmcmythtv front end - even
with the patched mplayer. I also had some performance problems on my
machine because its fairly low end - just didn't have the horses to do
MPEG4 very well.

The Plextor had good driver support from the chipmaker (WIS) through
the DIVX device forums, but all the devices features aren't available
in MythTV. You're must use MPEG4 although the device can also do
MPEG2. The Plextor/MythTV integration also did not support changing
the audio/video bitrates very well.

It seems like there are a lot more people using the PVR150/250/500.
Because of the popularity, you get more of the card's features built
in MythTV and better support from the community.

That was my experience in a nutshell.

God man, your running SVN, if your running SVN you should be reading the dev
list and you should be reading the back log of the dev list.

There are some huge, major changes going on with LiveTV in SVN. Isaac and
company are reworking how live tv works, adding new features, abilities, etc.
One of these is the ability to easily watch live tv, record from live tv,
etc.

Try this link out, you'll learn a lot about myth!

[mythtv-users] Xbox Remote Replacement with JP1 Remote: really a lircd.conf or irrecord question

2005-12-28 Thread CTD

Hello there,

Curious if anyone had reprogrammed a JP1 capable remote, such as the One
For All URC-6131n, to provide for more keys than is on the original
Microsoft Remote. Using remote code 0522, I can easily get all the
original xbox buttons duplicated, but I hoped for more functionality.

I think I can figure out to program the remote, but my main question is
how to configure lircd by updating the lircd.conf file. Specifically,
how does one determine the hexadecimal data value for a new button
that was not originally on the Microsoft remote? For instance when I
run irw and press normal xbox remote keys programmed into the universal
remote, I can see that lirc sees all the keys which were mapped in the
lircd.conf file. But for enhanced keys that I want to use, irw does not
output anything as I expected since there are no key-values pairs in the
lircd.conf file.

I started down the path of attempting to run irrecord, but I get the
following error:

#xbox:~# irrecord test
#irrecord - application for recording IR-codes for usage with lirc
#Copyright (C) 1998,1999 Christoph Bartelmus([EMAIL PROTECTED])
#irrecord: could not init hardware (lircd running ? --> close it, check
permissions)

I verified that lircd is running. I figured I would ask for some help

Any help would be appreciated.

Or separate "channels" for your two cable boxes. I have two DISH
receivers and changed one to use channel 9, so I use channel 1 and
channel 9 and a single IR blaster.

I'm not sure I follow ... do you mean what channel the cable box is
transmitting on?

No. I mean what channel the IR remote is transmitting on.

[mythtv-users] need help generating/finding lircd.conf for motorola dsr205/315

2005-12-28 Thread Kevin Venkiteswaran
I need help generating (or finding an existing) lircd.conf for a
Motorola DSR205 or DSR315 with a codeset other than 000.

Now for some background:
I have multiple Motorola satellite receivers (provided by Starchoice in
Ontario, Canada) that are hooked up to multiple Hauppauge PVR-150's. I'm
using a single IR-blaster from www.irblaster.info to control one of the
satellite receiver (programmed with codeset 000). I'm using the
lircd.conf from http://lirc.sourceforge.net/remotes/motorola/IRC442.

I've been advised to program the second satellite receiver to an
alternate codeset so I can control both with the same ir blaster.

I've tried to create my own lircd.conf using irrecord. I have an Ira-3
IR receiver (uses the irman protocol, purchased from
www.home-electro.com). The generated lircd.conf's have the one and zero
directives set as "0 0" which results in no data being transmitted. The
size of each message (bits directive) differs widely from my generated
lircd.conf (64bits) to the one I use above (12 bits).

I've juggled many numbers and have hit a dead-end. Any help is greatly
appreciated.

FWIW If the console is currently in text mode then it's just Alt-F7
(Ctrl is only needed in graphics mode).

In answer to the original question about moving the mouse cursor with
the numeric keypad -- you toggle this mode with Shift-NumLock.

[mythtv-users] (please respond) How do you use the keyboard instead of mouse in X?

2005-12-28 Thread Richard Bronosky
I'm shocked that I have not heard any answers to this this question. So
I'm warming the thread.

I'm also going to ask what I believe is a simpler question. I did
verify that my keyboard is not broken by doing Ctrl+Alt+F1 to get to a
terminal screen (with a cool looking KnoppMyth "LCD TV" border images)
I can log in and navigate around, but I cannot figure out how to return
to the x-windows desktop. All I can do to get back there is to call
"reboot now".

How do I return to the x-windows desktop after using Ctrl+Alt+F1 to jump
to a terminal?

Does anybody in the list is using mythTV in a latinamerican country,
or knows somebody who does?
If so, which source of TV listings are you/they using?
I'd appreciate any information.

Excellent news, I guess I'll continue working with my onboard audio to
see what I can get, sounds promising :)

As for my video, I broke down last night and bought an FX5200,
supposedly this is a great card for doing HDTV decoding through XvMC.
I found a matrix that isn't completely accurate comparing the
different cards, but it seemed accurate enough for me to pick a decent
card.

Thanks for the reply!

[mythtv-users] "This is close to an existing cut point" -> missing option

2005-12-28 Thread Jeff Simpson
I was recording a news broadcast for a friend and needed to crop out just the article she was looking for. I figured I should be able to use the cutpoint editing to do that without any problems. However - The myth editing program has an intelligent feature where it determines if the point you selected is close to another point, and if it is, it will give you these options:
Move the cutpoint to this locationdelete the cutpointswitch directionscancelWhat I wanted to do was "place a cutpoint here anyway" since the video I was cropping to was only 5-10 seconds long for parts. Does that option make sense to add? It would have also been helpful if maybe the cutpoints were numbered, so it could tell me which cutpoint it thought it was close to - the time-bar across the bottom wasn't very helpful for that, since cutting 5 seconds out of a 30 minute program makes it show up as a very small sliver. Thanks

Because of all the people who requested the recording of LiveTV (i.e. "I
was watching LiveTV for 45 minutes and decided the show was worth
keeping, so I hit 'r', but it didn't save the first 45 minutes of the

Search the lists for this issue being discussed ad nauseum--and it won't
change (and you can't stop it, short of re-writing a significant portion
of Myth in your own personal repository). You probably want to set Myth
so that the LiveTV recording group is not shown in Watch Recordings
(should be set by default). On MythWeb--at least for now--you'll see
them. Chris is busy working through a major rewrite of MythWeb, so when
he finishes, he may add support for hiding the LiveTV group (this is not
a promise, only a guess of when it may happen if it happens).

Also, note that from the frontend, you can create a playlist that
contains all your LiveTV recordings and delete them all at once. Or, if
you're patient, they will autoexpire.

Of course. Each recording schedule has an autoexpire/don't autoexpire
setting that is set at record time and can be changed post-recording as
needed.

. Plus if at anytime more space is required for a regular recording
myth will expire livetv recordings first.

Yes. As long as your auto-expire check frequency is high enough. I
have mine set to a few minutes so that it will catch when I do things

I see the following.

If you're looking for anonymous subversion

svn co http://svn.mythtv.org/svn/trunk/mythtvsvn co http://svn.mythtv.org/svn/trunk/mythpluginssvn co http://svn.mythtv.org/svn/trunk/myththemes

Where can I find a guide what to do afterwards. Or is this

You don't have to. Myth will auto expire them after I think a configurable
period of time( a day? ). Plus if at anytime more space is required for a
regular recording myth will expire livetv recordings first. You can also
configure mythfrontend to not show the livetv recordings in the

This is in my mind a major step backwards in terms of usability. I

How about an option to say 'Automatically delete live recording buffers

[mythtv-users] lighttpd and mythweb?

2005-12-28 Thread Sasha Z
I'm trying to get into rails programming, so I wanted to switch my web
server over to lighttpd. I've got rails running, and php seems to work
(phpmyadmin functions properly).

In order to get htaccess files read, I installed htscanner. I don't
know if it's working properly or not... but I don't get the db env
variable error anymore. In fact, I don't get anything but a white
screen when the page has loaded.

Any thoughts? Anybody used lighttpd before?

Re: [mythtv-users] Eh - unrequested recording of live TV?!

2005-12-28 Thread Michael T. Dean

Piers Kittel wrote:

Just did a bit of channel hopping last night and just now checked out
"Recorded Programs" on MythWeb and found that the backend recorded
every channel hop I made, something like 30 enteries in the "Recorded
programs" about 1 or 2 minutes each - depends on how long I watched
the channel hop - took me a while to delete them all. Why would the
backend record all this and how do I stop this?

Because of all the people who requested the recording of LiveTV (i.e. "I
was watching LiveTV for 45 minutes and decided the show was worth
keeping, so I hit 'r', but it didn't save the first 45 minutes of the
show. This sucks!!!").

At http://svn.mythtv.org/trac/wiki I see the following.

If you're looking for anonymous subversion access, use the following
commands to grab the latest code:

svn co http://svn.mythtv.org/svn/trunk/mythtv

svn co http://svn.mythtv.org/svn/trunk/mythplugins

svn co http://svn.mythtv.org/svn/trunk/myththemes

Where can I find a guide what to do afterwards. Or is this all you
have to do.

Re: [mythtv-users] Myth frontend forces disk spin-up

I've got a frontend-only box which spins down its disk once it has
booted. I've done all the things necessary to make this work, e.g.
disabling swap and syslogd, putting ntpd's drift file on a tmpfs
partition, etc.

This works fine -- there are never any spontaneous disk wakeups.

HOWEVER, some menu operations within mythfrontend cause the disk to
spin up -- an example is accessing the 'Watch Videos' menu item.

Has anyone else encountered this, and fixed it? If so, how?

Sounds like Myth is accessing the XML theme info/images (which it seems
to do to allow changing the theme without restarting Myth). Have you
tried putting these on a tmpfs? ( probably all of
/usr/local/share/mythtv/ but you can "trim" out themes you're not using)

Re: [mythtv-users] Problems running Myth - segfault starting liveTV

2005-12-28 Thread Blastzone
I ended up blowing away that system and switching to the FC4 build, as FC4 just came out as I was having that problem).I did not have any issues with FC4, AND there were options that were not available to me when I used Gentoo.
I would assume that the build of MythTV installed by gentoo is not the same as the one installed by apt / yum via Jerod's guide.  At least, it was not as of Aug 05.  On 12/28/05,

(go into the /usr/X11R6/bin/startx script and pull the --nolisten tcp flag)and get some GDB output.  What I got was all the same log messages(see above) but also this line after the segfault:#0 0xb65b6dbc in nanosleep  () from /lib/libc.so.6
I hope that helps - it's frustrating being so close, and so far.Is there at least a hack that I can use in the interim to point "watchrecordings" to mplayer instead of the internal player?  trying to find
shows by 1066_MMDDhhmm_etc.  is not easy.If it helps any, I am having the EXACT same problem with my setup (gentoo, brand new install, Radeon Mobility 7500. myth worked fine with the normal ati drivers, crashes with a segfault with the radeon DRI OpenGL drivers. I have the nvidia use flag turned off. is myth hardcoded to use nvidia for some reason? Logically, it should not be trying to open /dev/nvidia0 at ALL if I have nvidia turned off.

You should be fine but you will need two SEPARATE instances of
lircd running. Also, my experience has shown that you do not want both
instances of lircd changing channels at the same time.

Or separate "channels" for your two cable boxes. I have two DISH
receivers and changed one to use channel 9, so I use channel 1 and
channel 9 and a single IR blaster.
